MacCool’s Public House Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

My wife and I decided to try something new, and found our way to MacCools around 8pm. The dining room seemed to be closing up for the night, but they sat is back near the bar, which was fine. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, and while I'd say the Irish pub theme wasn't over the top, it did have a homey atmosphere. My wife had fish and chips, while I tried the buffalo Shepard's pie. Both items seemed fresh made, hot, and tasted great. My only small complaint was that the price is a tad high. Otherwise, we had a lovely time.

We ate at MacCools for the first time on 1/31/13. I had the smoked salmon chowder, it was delicious. My wife had the maple blarney salad with chicken. She liked it very much. They had live entertainment that was decent. The server was very knowledgeable about the menu and was prompt and courteous. Prices were very reasonable.

I really like the lamb shank. Love the hunters boxty and salmon boxty. Service is always friendly. None of the appetizers have wow'd me.

Not great food for the money. Had the Irish Reuben which was decidedly average and a tad dry. I also ordered a bowl of the Potato Leak soup. The soup probably should have been called Cream of Grass Clippings...sour, bitter and utterly nasty. Service was good...very attentive wait staff which bumps the rating back to a three-star. Stay with the basics and away from the attempts at an artisan soup and things will be fine.

I've been to McCools three times. Each time the food was fine, but nothing special. If you get dessert, there was a mint ice cream cake that was great. There was also some kind of chocolate cake that was awful. Dry and tasteless.

You have to be in the mood to come here. The Lamb ribs are amazing. If I could just order one thing that would be it.

I like this Irish Pub/Restaurant. The food and the beer was excellent, as was the service. I could have lived without being interrupted from my conversation, or mid bite to be asked if I was still, "Okay." Oh well, they're damned if they do, and they're damned if they don't! Great Lamb Shank, and beer! Yum!

Holiday party disaster 12/30/08 Made reservations 30 days prior to a holiday party and was told tables would be set aside and arranged for a group of about 20 people. We arrived and they only had enough room for 12 people because other customers were using the nearby tables. What's the point of making a reservation if you don't set the tables aside and leave room for the group? The area around our group had 35+ people seated at tables. There were just 2 servers taking orders for all those people. They were very task saturated and could not meet the basic needs of the customers for things like taking orders, drink refills, etc. It took more than 45 minutes for 8 of us in the group to just get our order taken, and that's after many of the other people were already eating appetizers. This was the first and LAST time I ever ate there. Very, very poor and slow service. The food was average and not a value at all. $7 for a basic red wine glass and a bowl of salmon soup was around $12. Not worth what I was charged and once again, the service was awful.

Great beer, tasty food, a great place to get together. I'll go back.

Have to agree with the others, not an Irish pub! Food was mediocre, three small pieces of fish for $13? the shepherd pie was mostly spuds. Have been to many places around the US and Europe by far the worst I have been to, will not repeat

Great food. Great beer. Awesome atmosphere. Make sure you ask about beer specials. They have things that are not on the menu that are amazing like the cask conditioned Bobsled Ale from Wasatch Brewing Company.

  • Steve B.

Um, I was expecting more of a bar type atmosphere with typical bar food (burgers, pizza, wings, etc). This is NOT the case. If Irish food is what you're all about, you'll probably like it well enough. I won't be back.

the tables made of chunks of wood was about the most exciting thing about this joint. We tried to go all "MacAuthentic" and ordered some appetizers (not appetizing at all) and some stanky cabbage and boiled meats. 5 dudes who enjoy food and all of us found this place lacking. Going to the bathrooms you get back by the bar so there is a nice mix of urine and lager. That was actually the most authentic part of the experience. For the $/food quality/ambiance - there are many other locations I would prefer.

This is a perfect place for the area. Cozy right in with your friends for a pint of Guiness, and some extraordinary Irish-inspired food. Much like a true Irish pub, you're bound to make new friends among the warm, thematic rooms or over a game of shuffleboard in the back. It's a light, friendly atmosphere suitable for the whole family to attend. Don't worry if you're not a drinker. This isn't a bar-like atmosphere. The owner runs an attentive and cheery establishment. Service is generally prompt and friendly and most everything on the menu is great. Monday nights feature half-price appetizers, and they have several here worth making the trip for: the house-made cured salmon (gravlox), bangers (English bread crumb sausages) and perogies. The lamb ribs are exquisite, slathered with a tangy, slightly spicy House sauce contrasted against a touch of creamy blue cheese-style sauce. Many of the seasonal, light entree salads are wonderful, as is the homey buffalo shepherds pie: a blend of spicy game meat, sausage, malty beer, creamy mashers and Irish cheddar. The pot pie, topped with puff pastry is a showstopper, though the sauce is a little too mild for my taste. The lasagna is plan-ahead wonderful. I love the salmon the most, prepared absolutely terrific: grilled quickly and simply adorned with a touch of their tangy House "BBQ" sauce, and never cooked past the appropriate, tender translucency at the center. Come early to make sure you get some of the prime rib, if you're a hankerin'. A true gem among independently owned restaurants in the area, please visit the special eating area that Layton's Heritage Park Blvd. is becoming known for. (The Blvd. is right by the Davis Conference Center.) Visit when the weather is cool, the clouds loom low on the Rocky Mountains, and the Wednesday evening live celtic music is a goin'; You're guaranteed to forget your troubles and enjoy all that is wonderful about Irish Craic (hospitality)--but without any of the so-called legendary bland British Isles food. Not much in the way of competively priced kids menu here, and parking can be tight on the weekends. (There's live music on Sunday morning, too, so go and enjoy a memorable brunch.) Plan on $10-16 a person plus any drinks. In the Salt Lake area? Search out MacCool's sister pub at 1400 S. Foothill Drive.

cultural, and nicely decorated, farely small. the food was pretty good. i got the cornbeef and cabbage, my husband got the sheppard's pie with deer, beef, and buffalo. he said it was the best he ever had, and it's pretty hard to mess up cornbeef and cabbage my husband ordered a small glass of glennfiddich (SP?) irish wiskey and it was watered down tremendously. he wanted to say something (after we got our food that is) but he's not the one to speak up and complain at restaurants, having worked in them before. It was kind of expensive, and not a place to really brag about, but i honestly think it's worth a go at least once!! you don't find many authentic irish places around.

  • Jonathan V.

Excellent. If you like Irish food then this is your place. Good food. Good beer. A little pricey but really good stuff. I had a shepherd's pie with veal, sausage, and buffalo. If I am ever back in the Layton, UT area I will definitely go back to MacCool's for a bite to eat.

  • Jake G.

I haven't been to Ireland so I can't speak to the authenticity but I've had everything from the Ribs, to the Shepard's Pie, to the Salmon, to the Brie Sandwich and I must say I've never had a bad meal. This is a fantastic little addition to the Layton Dining scene and is well worth checking out.

    (5)
  • Mike G.

This place is a pub, not a bar. If you don't dig Irish fare, stay away. But if you want to hang out with friends, enjoy some Buffalo Shepherd's Pie, play a game of darts, and down a pint or two, you would do well to check it out.

  • Cheryl P.

My favorite thing here is the Corned Beef Casserole. It is purely comfort food. Their Guineas Stew is tasty, as well. They used that stew in the Beef Boxty that I tried today. My husband had the Pork Tenderloin. It was overcooked and dry. (Perhaps you should stick with Irish faire here.

We love this place and have been many times over the last few years. Tonight...St. Patrick's day, A patron in line with a young daughter, who needed to use the bathroom was rejected by the gal running the waiting list. She said that her manager was anal retentive and that they would not allow them to enter the restaurant until their name was officially called from the waiting list. Needless to say, she asked her to take her name off the list and left. Shortly after I recommended to my family that we also leave and we did out of disgust. Who doesn't let a young lady use the restroom? Signed.... Sad former patron.

If you want customer service, stay away from this place. Also the manager Michael, has the I don't care attitude.

  • Jessica G.

Great service, lackluster food. They seemed to pride themselves in their locally sourced meat, but included almost none in our Shepherds Pie. So we essentially ordered glorified mashed potatoes. Could be because we went 30 minutes before the kitchen closing, but it's not a good enough excuse for us.

    (2)
  • Chad F.

Don't order the shepard's pie, it was nothing more than mashed potatoes with little to no meat, carrots, or corn for the outrageous price of $12.86. Probably won't be back

  • Michael P.

One of my fav places to eat in Layton. I go for the friendly service, the incredible authentic food, and of course the 35 different beers (Guinness being the best of course). The owner stops to chat everyone we're there, which is awesome. The salmon and mash are to die for.

    (4)
  • Andrew G.

We walked in on a Friday night and saw small children at every table. I thought this was a "public house" aka pub. The place looks promising. Sorry, we're out.

    (2)
  • Sean W.

Ok I went with high hopes...but I was left waiting more. First the positives. Service was great. I love the wood chairs and the "feeling" of the place. The okay parts. The food was mediocre at best. The mash tastes like it came out of a box and not fresh. The shepherds pie had little meat...we are talking maybe 4 pieces...small pieces... with the same mash that tastes like it came out of a box. The meatloaf (which was suggested) tastes like it was precooked with they own now sauce added on it. Their soda machine was not working but I will not hold that against them. I would go back only if the person I am going with is paying.

So glad a co-worker recommended this place while I was visiting the area for business. I am a little surprised to see the negative comments about the service though. I have only been in 4 times over the past year, but had excellent service with each visit. We did sit in the bar on a couple of the visits and yes... the service was a little slower, but that is common with seating in the bar area for many establishments. The staff was still great. We have started each visit off with the Lamb Riblets. Those things are amazing. I keep saying that I'm just going to get them as my meal next time I go in, but it never happens. Maybe once I've tried everything I will limit myself to just the ribs one night. On my last visit I tried their sandwich called The Junction. The mild saltiness of the ham combined with that sweetness from the fig jam made it by far, the most awesome grilled cheese sandwich I have ever had. Added on a cup of their Split Pea Soup... OK, sure it repulses some people and makes them think of the Exorcist, but it tastes great! Riblets + Split Pea Soup + The Junction = My Happy Place I will definitely be coming back every time I visit the area.

First time here service was good, food somewhat. I ordered sweet potato fries which was very good. I ordered meat loaf which I found disappointing. No flavor to the meat. Sauce is what made the meat loaf good.

Nice, quiet pub. I had the pirogi and bangers & mash. Nicely done and great beer. This is a bit of an oasis among a bunch of really bad chain restaurants. I have had the pies here before and they are outstanding. the atmosphere is quiet and trendy with a great selection of beers on tap and in the bottle.

    (4)
  • James B.

Fish and chips is okay. Fish is tasty, chips aren't great though. Lamb sandwich is "meh". Chicken pot pie is good and the beer selection is great. Service is always good and the bar is the place to sit. I Love that they have a shuffleboard table. The wings have never let me down though.

I went in the early afternoon on a Saturday. They sat me in the bar area since I was alone. There was a very small crowd in the restaurant. It took them almost 15 minutes just to ask me what I wanted to drink and another 10 minutes to get me a beer even though I was seated right near the bar. Some drunk locals were in the bar complaing about the out of town traffic that comes here. It's right near an Air Force depot base, so I'm guessing a lot of their customers are from out of town. Definitely not kid friendly in the bar; maybe better in the restaurant seating. My server finally came to take my order. I ordered the fish and chips which everyone seems to recommend. The fish was good. The chips are thinly sliced potatoes which I'm o.k. with and it was a large serving of chips. They were slightly overcooked in my opinion, but I'm o.k. with a little crunch to the chips. The decent food was far outweighed by the really poor service. The bartender ended up waiting on me because my server was too busy chit chatting with the local drunks. I think he could tell I wasn't happy. Maybe 3.5 on the food, but 1.5 on the service. I won't be back.

I came here when it first opened. I loved it then and I love it still. Talk to the big Irish beard when you get there. He will treat you like family. I prefer the shepherds pie and the corned beef au gratin.

We went here on a Friday night and didn't have to wait for a table, which was nice. We started with the Calamari appetizer, which was really good. The breading was perfect and tasty and the sweet chili dipping sauce was a nice alternative to the standard cocktail sauce. I ordered the Corned Beef Au Gratin Pie. The menu says it has horseradish and sage in it, but I couldn't taste either. Overall the dish didn't have much flavor. My mom ordered the Seafood Cakes, which she enjoyed but said they were really spicy. The menu says they have a touch of spice, but believe me this woman can handle spicy foods so if she said they were really spicy, she means it. My husband ordered the fish and chips. He said the fish was good but the chips weren't very good. They were cold, limp potato slices that had been fried. So overall this place is just okay. The food is okay, the atmosphere is nice. I probably wouldn't go back.

Looking for some type of Irish-slanted fun on St. Paddy's day, my wife and I went to McCools to tip back a few drinks. Had to order an appetizer (thank you Utah laws), which was decent. We wanted a seat in the pub, which we found to have very little to no Irish atmosphere. The music just about put us into a coma, so we took off seeking something different after two drinks. The person who waited on us was great. She recommended a place that was more of a bar type place. But before we left, we watched a manager come up to a large party next to us who apparently had been there too long. He "didn't want to be pushy', but asked them to move on or buy more food so he could put paying customers at that table. Then proceeded to put two parties with children at that table. I don't like drinking around kids, so that was our signal to exit. Personally, I have NEVER seen such rude treatment of customers. Chances of going back are slim.

Maccool's has probably one of the best atmospheres of any place out there. When we arrived, we were promptly greeted by a nice gentleman. Not only nice, but hilariously funny. Nothing like getting a good dinner date with my little sister started like a good laugh. Just a great way to start off. I give four stars only because the service was more towards the slow side. I've had a lot of time to think about and write this review. To start off, an appetizer of lamb ribblets. How delicious!? The meat just fell of the bone and the the sauce was just the perfect sauce, can't even describe it. For the main course, salmon of knowledge for me. It's my favorite here. I love how you can choose how your salmon is cooked. No other place has that option that I'm aware of. And the sweet sauce on the salmon just told it off. The meal is just the right size to make you feel satisfied but not so full you fall into a coma upon finishing. In the summer, they have the most delicious herb lemonade that is mouthwatering and very addictive. I definitely recommend comin here when you want a fun, upbeat atmosphere for your lunch or dinner choice.

Came here while on business. Recommended by the hotel and.provided a coupon for a free appetizer. Best decision of my trip. Loved the lamb riblets and the buffalo shephards pie is killer too! Talked to "The Beard" (Michael) and learned tons about Irish food, beer, Vodka and their emerging markets in Utah. Definte do over! Heading back tonight for half price appetizers. Additional huge plus- they partner with the Air Force base here and support our troops! Whats not to love with a 5-stat rating!

  • Drew D.

Buffalo Shepard's pie, very good!! Neat atmosphere in the back, pretty good beer list. Service is average, I think our waiter we a little over worked but was very nice and knowledge about the beers that they had.

  • Rudy C.

Perfect beer temp and pour. I enjoyed the casual pub atmosphere...exactly furnished and offered menu the way an Irish pub should be. Service was spotty, but staff was nice. Good food, but a little pricy.

  • Vikkie N.

We really only come here for the lamb ribs and lamb & brie sandwiches. Never had a bad one yet! Have always had great service too. I love the fact that they'll also do half and half fries (regular & sweet potato). Irish bar... uh, no... Good lamb - oh yes!

    (4)
  • Nicole P.

Salmon chowder for the win! Delish! Chock full of delicious things and very filling. I've also tried some chicken dish that was good, just can't remember what it was called. Salads taste fresh and are good. I want to yet the curry salad someday. Potato skins are our favorite appetizer. They didn't have it last time we we went but the Irish Mud Pie ice cream cake is AMAZING!!!!! I dream about it. mmmmmmm. Husband likes the buffalo shepherds pie. It wasn't my taste though. All in all, I will definitely be going back. The owner is an awesome guy and really is.dedicated to his place. He is often in the kitchen making the meals himself. Great experiences here.

  • Lyoni P.

The appetizers were good we had something similar to a quesadilla with lamb. And it had a sauce that was creamie with it. So good. Corn beef and hash was good. Needs a bit more on plate cause the plate looked kinda empty when it arrived. A take back into Ireland this is the place you need to be. Ima fan for Irish food

This is one of my favorite places to visit. Why you ask?? One word......GUINNESS!!!!! OK, so I do eat here but really go for the ice cold Guinness. Friday and Saturday evenings can get quite busy. I always get the grilled chicken sammich!! The chicken is is seasoned and grilled perfect every time. Have this sammich with a side order of sweet potato fries and a cold Guinness to wash it down and you will be one happy and full customer. CHEERS~~~

  • Alison L.

This place is wonderful. The staff is great and always has a recommendation! I love the chicken potpie. As a warning, the puff pastry top is huge, flaky and perfect with the filling/stew. The Kobe dog is yummy and the "special only" Kobe burger is worth finding out what night it is being served. Tuesdays are half price appetizers. It is a great opportunity to try a bit of everything for not too much. In fact you save do much splurge on the lamb ribblets! The herbal lemonade is a must if they have it. It seems to go fast! They have many beers on tap if you want something more than lemonade. Just because it is a pub does not mean that you have to leave the kids at home. The kids menu has great fish, shepherds pie and smiley potatoes. The music is great and it is a fun place. Oh, and the weekend brunch served until 3. Trout and Eggs!!! They are divine.

This is solely a review of the host that greeted us this evening. A short, thin young guy with a shaved head. Not sure of his name. For some reason when we asked him to sit in back, he proceeded to "check" to see if there was room. He came back and stated that it was full and attempted to seat is up front. I smelled a rat and told him that it was fine and that we would wait to see if someone exited before our last guest arrived. Not 2 minutes later, without a patron exiting the building, we were approached by the thin-blond waitress, who has always been a great server, and escorted to the back. Low and behold, there were more empty tables than there were occupied seats. Dear sir, was it your discretion or company policy that prompted you to lie to me?

Super slow service on a near vacant night. I have experienced this at two locations. Food was ok.

    (1)
  • Christina A.

Great service, atmosphere is very relaxed and "Pubby". The staff knows a lot about their food and beer selections. You can get traditional grub or try something a bit different. Love this place!

    (5)
  • Tony T.

I am giving them two stars because the wait staff was good and the food had a visual appeal. The taste however was not good. I got the seafood cakes which should have been titled seafood meatloaf. It was not good. It tasted like a cheap combination of fish trying to be gourmet. My wife got the Augustine pie. Immediately when we say down I was embarrassed for the management. The menus that were handed to is were torn and stained and mine was not even legible so much of the menu was torn away and missing. I will avoid going back if I can.

This MacCool is slightly bigger than the one down in SLC, they have a room with bar for private party here. There is also a Shuttleboard here for bar game and pre-food-arrival entertainment. Service seems quite decent here too. I ordered Buffalo Shepherd's Pie and tried to have mushrooms removed, but was unable due to being a "pie", which confirms the pies were premade rather than freshly made when ordered. The pie tasted fine on the top with a correct balance between mash potato and cheese. The bottom however had a strange sour taste and was quite notable in the sausage, perhaps it was the mushroom. The food from this MacCool is about the same as the SLC one, but this location is definitely bigger. They also have Beermosa here :P

In town for work and my group decided to try this place out. Good environment, decent selection of beer and creepy crawlers in the food. Yep, you read that correctly! One of the guys at the table had a worm or some type of small critter weaving in and out of the air pockets in his ciabatta bread, absolutely disgusting. Owner/manager said it came from the lettuce that was on the turkey burger, inexcusable. Washing the lettuce appropriately would have stopped this. So where else are they lacking in their cleaning abilities. Worse off they agreed to get him something else to eat and still charged him for his meal. This is not a place that any of us will be returning to eat at. Sorry MacCool's we had high expectations and were let down.

I was surprised to enjoy the place as much as I did. That is to say, I'm not Irish pub obsessed, but the food was actually quite good. Salmon chowder, gravlox, shepherd's pie, all were excellent. It was enough to bring me back a second time on a short visit to Utah. Service was a little flaky, but the food was good enough for me to overlook it.

  • Jennifer K.

Not a bad place, but not incredible. The staff is polite and quick to refill drinks. The food can be a hit or miss, depending on what you order. The ambiance is nice with Irish-ish decor, I really enjoy the stone fixtures with traditional (authentic?) Irish sayings and quotes. Their restrooms are clean and decorated, stop in to wash up before leaving. Their prices are ok. 2 meals and 2 soft drinks run about $25. The most disappointing thing is their Irish Soda Bread. Its burnt, dry and crunchy. They charge $1.00 for a small slice of that crap. Don't waste your time or money on it. Sad, because I typically love soda bread! The food is alright. The Shepherd's Pie is a great choice! That's been our favorite dish so far. Didn't enjoy the club or ruben sandwiches. They have a kid's meal that is low-cost and has your typical kid's stuff like chicken nuggets, fries, Mac & Cheese, etc.

I've been here twice now. The back bar area is comfortable and has a shuffle table. Huge selection of beer with a knowledgeable staff. For both visits, there was a long wait to order food. Tuesday nights are half off appetizers......except for the lamb ribs (which we found out after the fact). Also, the lamb burgers were unavailable sadly......and the perogies were also unavailable after the fact. The lamb shank was very good as well as the calamari. The atmosphere was great and the staff was friendly. I think we just caught them on a bad night after a busy weekend. They were out of most things. I still recommend going.

Hands down the best food I've had in a while. I had bangers and mash and a buffalo burger. Both obviously fresh and both cooked perfectly.

MacCool's has a good atmosphere and is nice for a group in the back as Tony L. said. The staff was very polite and food arrived in a timely manner. I really liked how the area was off by its self. I ordered a Bison burger, which was smaller then I thought, with a sweat/normal potato fries. The burger was OK, but I wish it was a little less done then what I had. Fries were basic and not as crispy as I would of liked. I also tried some potato skins (Potato chips with cheese) and a naan type bread with hummus that was OK. The prices are a bit higher then I think the food is worth. A coupon usually comes once a month for this place in the Hometown Values magazine, so if you get one it is worth a visit. I will have to try a few other dishes but overall a three stars for good service and OK food. As others have said not really an Irish place, but more like a restaurant with a few unique menu items. Good for something different once in awhile.

We stopped by for a drink before meeting friends for dinner. We just ordered the hummus (laws require that you can't just drink!) The hummus was good and garlicky & came with some olive tapenade, which was also good. My husband thought it was super-strong, but I thought it added flavor when used sparingly. Also discovered that they do a weekly tasting menu with beer pairings for a reasonable price. We just might postpone our road trip back to Cali a few days to attend the next one featuring locally sourced Wagyu beef, Kurubota pork & Rogue beers. Yum!!!

This place is terrific. I have been going here for years now and I have yet to have a bad meal. The service in Layton is exceptional! The lamb ribs and split pea soup are an automatic order every time I walk in the door.

  • Neal M.

I've been coming to Layton/Ogden on business since early 2007 and always stop in at MacCools at least once each trip. And always have a good meal. The best is anything on the menu starring their salmon (wild caught, not frozen, from WA state, and they smoke their own gravlox) or lamb. Also, a great selection of salads, my favorite is the beet. And of course the best time to visit is Tuesdays for the half price appetizers (not alas including the lamb ribs). And I don't know why lasagna would be on an Irish pub menu, but it is and it is good! Hmm, 5+ years eating there and I've yet to try a hamburger...well why would I with all the more interesting choices?!! Some doofus called them a chain, I don't think 3 local locations qualifies them for that.

Average to below average food at a high price point. I have tried them a few times to make sure I did not get them on a bad day, I was not impressed during any of my visits.

  • Rob W.

MacCool's has all the charm of an Irish... strip mall. Don't let the name fool you, it's not an Irish pub; in fact MacCool's isn't even a pub. It's a mediocre American chain restaurant with a half-heartedly executed Irish theme. There's no bar, no music, and it has all the atmosphere of your average Wal-Mart. The menu largely consists of the typical chain restaurant fare given Irish names. Even their rather short beer list has only one Irish beer, the obvious one. MacCool's is easily the most pathetic attempt at creating an Irish pub that I have had the misfortune to witness. The floor staff we encountered were poorly trained and in one case, seemingly on the verge of erupting into an unprovoked fit of rage at any moment. It was like getting service from strung-out meth addicts. Not recommended. You're better off going to one of the numerous other casual dining options in the area.

I have been here twice now and I think it's a good place to have lunch. They have a nice section in the back for groups that has it's own bar and shuffleboard. Both times I've been there the service was great, even though we had a large group. I'm gonna start out by saying that I really like their fries. The sweet potato fries are pretty good. Don't let them freak you out; they may be orange in color and a little sweet to the taste, but they are delicious. The hamburgers, on the other hand, didn't leave as big of an impact on me as the fries. I mean, it was a good hamburger, but I thought it would be better because of the price. I hear their fish and chips are good, but I haven't tried them.

1st visit 4 weeks ago. The Caesar salads were good, and my lamb sandwich was very good. My wife was raised in New England and loved her stew, as it reminded her of tavern food she'd grown up with. The atmosphere was great and the prices were indeed reasonable. We were thrilled to find a new favorite place to eat, and less than 10 minutes from home. We began to tell friends and family about MacCool's, and I took my 17-year-old there a week later excited to try something else on the menu.We ordered some regular fries for an appetizer, waited 10-15 minutes, and then got sweet potato fries. So they had to go back and cook the fries again while we waited. The description of the bison burger looked interesting. The server said it is extremely popular, so I got it. Imagine my disappointment when, 30 minutes later, I finally got my $11 burger and the bun was not toasted, the patty was crispy instead of a little pink in the middle as I had requested, and the only other thing in the middle of the 'fresh out of the bag' bun was a very small spot of what was supposed to have been jalapeno cream cheese, but I can't say for sure because it was so small and soaked into the bun. There was literally just a pinch of pico de gallo to go with it. I would have still been disappointed even if it were half the price. I asked for some more pico de gallo, and that, along with some ketchup (not ideal with pico de gallo but oh well), made the burger palatable. It's no exaggeration to say that I can easily get a better burger at several drive-thru places within a mile of MacCool's, and pay half as much. I wish I could say the rest of the meal was better, but no. The Caesar salad was swimming in dressing and had a grand total of 4 small croutons. My son got the breakfast platter with some lamb, bacon, fried egg and toast. It wasn't bad, but at $13 it should have been better. Again, we could have driven half a mile to IHOP and gotten a better breakfast platter for much less. Finally we decided to have some dessert. I thought it would be harder to misfire with that. We asked for the mud pie, and then were told the place was out of that. So we ordered the apple crisp. That's a pretty standard dessert at most restaurants these days. We got a deep bowl mostly filled with ice cream. We dug through that to find a little bit of apple crisp underneath it. The description said it was supposed to be warm. I guess it was, if I compare it to the ice cream. It was basically room temperature and not crisp at all. The oatmeal was mostly uncooked. So after it was all over, I paid $48 for a meal for 2 that was really pretty blah. I have rarely written complaints to restaurants. But I had to ask, was our first experience at MacCool's just a lucky fluke? I wish I knew; then I might have an easier time deciding whether to try it again. And I feel compelled to hurry and tell everyone that my initial praise was premature and they might want to hold off on running into MacCool's. I might have raised my concerns with my server, or asked to talk to the manager on the spot. But that just makes me and my son and the server uncomfortable, and just makes a disappointing experience more stressful. So after I got home I emailed the management. 3 weeks later and still no answer. I imagine that at some point we might venture back to MacCool's, probably not as soon as we would have a few days ago. I think the place could be great, but the food quality and consistency have a long way to go. Atmosphere and unique menu offerings only go so far. So disappointing.

Drinking in Utah sucks at restaurants cause you always have to order food to get beer, but at least the food is good here. End of story.

I have been to Ireland and had Irish food made for me by Irish people. This is not Irish food, it is dog food at best.

Seriously disappointed! I went today on Saint Patrick's Day, knowing we would have to wait. The hostess was okay but definitely not willing to go above and beyond. I asked to use the restroom for my three year old while we waited and I was told no. The manager had given her strict Instructions not to let anyone inside who wasn't being seated, but I could go use the restroom at the BBQ place next door! We left, and I won't go back. The location in Salt Lake will be getting my business from now on.
