After living in midland for almost a year... It was my first time at KD's bbq... We had some visitors from Seattle and my fiancé wanted to take them here. The atmosphere was chilled and awesome. It was dark and the place was FILLED with the random-est things lol my favorite was the toilet-view poster in the girls restroom... As you enter.. (what looks like a trailer..) you walk pass this man that cuts up the meat and you pick whatever you want and however much you want. It's about 14.99lb? You get to choose brisket, hot links, cheddar links, ribs, bbq burnt tips, corn, etc. they also serve potato salad, chili, and cobblers. After passing the trailer section, you then enter a HUGE sitting area there's seats everywhere.. And it extends! I love the atmosphere it's chilled and everyone is sweet there! The food was pretty good. I wish there were more choices, but I enjoyed the experience.

Wonderful landmark of Midland! They have dine-in & carry-out options. It's out of the way & may be harder to find, but it's easy to see from a considerable distance down the road. My family has always enjoyed their barbecue meats, & they do offer some vegetarian-friendly side dishes that are pretty good.

Ordering your meat from the cook, right out of the tin plates, is just like a family reunion to me. Don't miss the grilled jalapenos too, perfect with your beans. I coming into town today with fellows from Chicago and Boston but they're closed on Mondays! Dang shame. Maybe I can get them in for lunch on Tuesday before they fly out. I like that the sides are fairly limited, stick to the BBQ and beans with a little cobbler to top off. This time of summer you will need a good shady spot for a nap afterwards.

Best authentic BBQ in Midland! Super tender, and the meat has that smokey taste. Great selection, and you get to pick which slice you want. Perfectly cooked, with the ring in the center. Call before going to confirm hours of operation!

First time here, driving from San Diego to Dallas! This place is so delicious!! Everyone was so nice and welcoming! The food was amazing! They have a variety of grilled meat! Definitely recommend this place for family and friends!

We stopped at KD's for a late lunch on our move from Dallas to Phoenix, 9-3-2015. We chose the chopped brisket, turkey, hot link, peach cobbler and the pinto beans. The brisket was quite good and the hot link was pretty good, not overly spicy but had some decent heat to it. The turkey breast turned out to be a processed loaf of pressed turkey. It had that taste of cheap lunch meat and was airy and spongy, not at all what we expected in west Texas. We took it back and they gave us the meat of our choice and we selected more of the brisket. The beans had no seasoning of any kind. They appeared to have just been straight from the can and were very bland. The cobbler was made from canned peaches and the crust tasted like under-cooked dough. Overall it has a rustic, west Texas decor which is pleasant. If you know what to get and not get it might be worth a second visit.

WOW!!!!!! I can't believe I've never been here!!! The minute I walked in the door I felt at home! The atmosphere alone makes you feel like you're walking into a place where everyone knows your name. When you order you grab a tray and paper and a cook will load you up on the meats of your choice(they charge by the pound), get a few sides, a desert, a drink and then check out. You can get plenty of beans, onions, bread and sauce at the condiment island. Now to the taste... The sliced beef was tender and almost fell apart as you cut into it. The flavor just had enough smokiness. It waaaaaas good! Ham, sides and peach cobbler were also top notch! I was also very impressed one of the family owners Dustin came by to check on my Dad and I and see how everything was. This is a must go to bbq restaurant!

This place used to be amazing, we extremely disappointed this visit. We understand the oil crash is affecting all of Midland/Odessa.. This place has went to cheap cuts of meat and still charging premium prices. The beef brisket was almost all fat, the chicken was processed chicken parts, the sausage was to disgusting to eat. $30 for a horrible meal.

  • Malcolm C.

This is Texas BBQ at its best. We had the chopped beef and the sausage. It is to die for. The sides are very good also. We had the peach cobbler for desert. The meat is served on paper. You order by weight of the meat. Be careful not to get too much as it can be pricy if you do.

  • Andy K.

Best BBQ in Midland, hands down. I always try to stop by at least once whenever I'm in town. The sweet ribs and brisket are usually what I get, along with a mix of their sweet and hot BBQ sauce. You can mix and match different meats, which are priced per pound.

Horrible customer service, bought more than $50 of products and was treated by the owner like I was a either a child and/ or his age. I'm a 37 year old attorney from Austin and this "owner " clearly was wearing his badge of courage which was surprising that there was room, since he was also consumed by the big heart on the sleeve. At least I was reminded "again" not to believe everything that is written, ha-ha! I will stick to the great city of Austin for all things barbecue. Big disappointment, made what otherwise would had been a pleasant trip, truly disconcerting. Hope that "owner" will remember his medication more often, oh and that what goes up, always comes down. And that's free advice.

This place is great for sure. The decor is of the dive variety but I say that as a compliment. You come in, grab the meat you want, weigh the meat, pay for the meat, and then grab the salad, beans, and dessert are all included all you can eat as part of the meal. The service was really friendly and relaxed. The place was really clean as well. I would recommend you try this place if you're in the area.

DELICIOUS is the word for KD'S barbeque. Everything is awesome here. I just wish the businesses around here would understand that they aren't doing anyone any good by charging outrageous prices...

    (5)
  • Bryan D.

Very few places I have been too that have "it" when it comes to BBQ. The brisket is tender, the ribs are perfect, and you must try the jalapeño sausage. The staff is friendly. Highly Highly recommend this BBQ to anyone in the Midland-Odessa area.

    (5)
  • Liz S.

We've been here a couple time. The service is okay besides everyone staring at us? I wouldn't go back, the price is outrageous for the quality, quantity, and actual setting... You get the same food at dickeys for half the price.

I was attempting a monster road trip of Atlanta to Santa Barbara ... over four days ... with no A/C (don't ask). I am driving through hot rural Texas and see a sign for KD's BBQ off the highway and I thought why not? I park my car at a building that looks like their old location and walk next door and there is a line at least 30 deep in the hot and blazing sun. I knew right away this place was legit. I waited 25 minutes before even getting my food, but it was totally worth it. This is the kind of experience and food that you may only find once in America and it is the kind of experience that a road trip provides. KD's is a cavernous structure filled with many bits of Americana and I can't even do it justice in print. The food is spectacular. Once you get up to the front of the line, you grab a tray and a sheet of wax paper - no plates - and there is a guy standing there in front of a huge, 20-feet smoker and you just tell him what you want - brisket, pork, sausages, corn, turkey, chicken, whatever - and he carves off a chunk and puts it on your tray. That's it. Then, you get in line for cobbler, cole slaw or potato salad and pay by weight. There is another table in the center of the room with many different sauces, pickles, and black beans. There is also a side table with water, and they have all drinks and beers. Then you just sit down at a table and wolf down. This is true Americana and I will take a journey here again. As much as our country constantly seems to be in turmoil, I feel like KD's will last forever.

Great BBQ! The brisket is AAA-mazing and so are the candy ribs. A little over priced, but I have never left hungry. All the meats are the same, set price per pound, so if you get a lb of sausage it's going to cost the same as an lb of ribs. This makes the long lines move pretty quick.

    (4)
  • Brent T.

I am not sure what alternate universe the people who rated this place anything under 4 stars live, but take it from a guy who has had some of the best BBQ this country has had to offer. The Slices Brisket rivals any, that's right ANYA brisket I have ever had. It literally melts in your mouth, pulls apart with your fingers, and has a perfect smoke from crust to center. The chopped brisket, the sausages, the beans! Do NOT miss this place. If you love BBQ and want to experience what Texas has to offer, this is the place, not a single doubt about it.

  • Sam L.

The first time was way better, today I had the sweet ribs, whole sausage, and 1 inch thick brisket that was 10 inch long...wanted moist brisket but got very dry instead, the sweet ribs were OK and also the sausage...make sure you watch how they cut the meat or you will be like me with $18.10 worth of meat before sides and drink!!! The guy cut the meat very thick bc they weigh the meat here, WATCH OUT for this

    (3)
  • LJ L.

Yum Yum Yum Okay it's a little awkward to walk right into where they are cutting meat, but hey why not put your best foot forward as they say. The BBQ is laid out for the picking and at the time we paid $16.75 per pound and it doesn't matter what meats you choose. Grab a tray - put meat on it :) My family and I stopped in on our way home to San Diego 4/2/15 and loved the pork ribs and brisket! We didn't mess with sides or cobbler - just the meat and some sauce, pickles and bread. Oh wait - we did order corn on the cob. It was neither hot nor delicious - it had been sitting I suspect on the heating table for 2-3 hours too many that day. My suggestion on the corn on the cob - ask how long it's been sitting on the warming tray. It's busy because it is GOOD! Very GOOD! Not a five star for me because of all the use of Styrofoam. I love the USA and this planet - styrofoam is horrible. I hope they will consider dishes for dine in to make a big difference and big impact.

This place is solid. Very unique and interesting. The meat here is great. I had the brisket and the jalapeño cheddar sausage. The sausage was the best in town. The beans were okay. Cobbler was good but not the best. Service was pretty good.

  • Stacy N.

This place is everything you want in Texas BBQ. The brisket melts in your mouth, has perfect char and is also available in sauce. Hot links have great flavor. Their "candy" ribs are huge and meaty. Delicious. My husband loved the jalapeño sausage. Potato salad is creamy instead of chunky and very good as is the coleslaw. The peach cobbler and sweet tea are excellent. Your meal comes with the bean bar where you get all the sauces, beans, bread, pickles and onions you can eat. Your meats are weighed by the pound and sides cost extra. It's not cheap. We spent about $50 for lunch but it was worth every penny and we had a whole box full of leftovers to take home. The inside of the place is super casual and fun. A true Texas experience.

This place has turned into a joke. They wanna pretend they are Coopers but they are far away from it. "Get your meat off the pit" hah it just a place to keep it warm & it drys it out. I went in & got my usual, brisket, pork chop & chicken. It was all dry not very flavourful & definitely not worth the high cost. One good thing is the sauce is still good. Poor quality product plus employees that act like they don't want to be there adds up to me not going anymore. I'll wait for my next trip to Luling for City Market or Juntion for Coopers. Sad that Midland has this as the door from the east.

When I think of Texas BBQ, this is what I imagine it to be. You walk into this place and are blown away by the decor. It appears as if the owner raided a bunch of yard sales at a trailer park. Then you navigate with your nose into this place, realizing that BBQ is a big deal here, ending in the back of the buidling where your the adventure begins. The back room reminds me more of a shed with a bar of all kinds of meat sold by the pound. The smell is so intoxicating that I have to fight the urge not to take too much but all the food looks so good that my eyes deceive me and override any signal my stomach is sending in regards to how hungry I really am. I grab a tray with lining of Butcher paper and the server starts piling on the meat. Everything looks and smells so good that you want to try everything so the pile gets bigger and bigger. I walk around the corner, struggling to bring my tray to the lady that is going to weigh my tray to find that there are all kinds of fixings on the way to the register. Good like getting past the cobblers that are lined up or the Texas Ice Cream that is screaming your name. After that you have to pass a bar full of BBQ sauce and more fixings. They have every sauce that you can think of; Hot, mild, sweet, vinegar, thick...what ever you want but believe me that the meat is so good that you may want to skip it this section. There is no doubt in my mind that if anyone is in the vicinity of this place, STOP!!

Best Bbq I've ever had. The candy ribs are to die for. And the brisket melts in your mouth so juicy and smokey. The brisket has a nice thick smoke ring from real wood you can taste it. Not that electric stuff. You got to try this place I wonder if this place has fame outside of Midland? I wouldn't doubt it. I honestly think it could be in the top 10 best Bbq joints in Texas.

I'm from North Carolina, and when I think BBQ, I think pulled pork. KDs BBQ was the first place I ever had Texas BBQ, and it made me change my whole way of thinking ! The sausages and the chicken I had were amazing. And not just that, I love the homey feeling of the place. You pour your own beans, take bread from the bag, and the atmosphere is awesome. Super country. But being from NC, I think they need to sweeten that tea a little more :)

    (4)
  • Daniel B.

I can't move! Just ate so much from KDs and I was supposed to save half of it. That was an utter failure. Ate chicken, jalapeno sausage, sliced beef, slaw, beans. Someone cart me out of here. Great food!

  • D.j. L.

Good barbecue... was not impressed with the turkey or chicken, do not have pulled pork. Brisket was above average and $30 for food.

  • Douglas W.

I've totally missed something I guess. I like the place, the menu, layout. It's cool. I didn't like the food very much. It's not cheap either. I had some pork ribs and sausage. The sausage was good but the ribs lacked for me. They were tender enough but the flavor was missing for me. I saw a smoke ring but didn't taste smoke. They give them a black pepper rub which didn't really marry well with pork. It probably works with the brisket which I didn't try. I hated the regular sauce as well as the vinegar sauce. I can't really describe them. I tried both repeatedly. The slaw was ok, average. The cowboy beans were the best thing I had. They charged me $1.50 extra for the slaw but the beans are free at the bean bar? It was a tiny cup of slaw. It was hard to figure what you were paying for. I didn't finish my dinner. I would give this place 2.5 stars if you could give half stars. There was a lot on the meat buffet I would definitely not order. The pork loin looked dusty dry as did the chicken. Too much just sitting around in pans. Maybe it's the brisket. If this place was in Ohio or something I could give it 3 stars but it's in Texas and I've had better barbecue in dozens and dozens of places. Maybe Midland is a food dessert.

I am told that KD's is the best BBQ in Midland, and I have to admit that they can have some great BBQ. My first visit for lunch was fantastic. The BBQ was moist, smoky, and among the top 10 BBQ I've ever had. Unfortunately, the next two visits were extremely unimpressive. Instead of getting a center cut of the brisket, I was given slices off the ends. They still had that smoky flavor, although a bit to strong, but they were dry and overcooked by far. I just finished my fourth visit and I finally had another center piece of brisket which I found to be almost as good as the first time. This time however, I notice how much fat there was. Thick layers of fat covered the outside of the brisket but the meat was solid through with virtually no marbling. I don't know too much about brisket or meat in general, but my friends who do tell me that it sounds like they do not trim the brisket properly before cooking it. Over all, I would give them a 4 at their best, however, begin able to deliver a consistent product is really important to me. I don't want to be playing Russian Roulette with my lunch. A little over-dramatic? Yes. But this is Texas, and we're talking about BBQ. Unfortunately, the final rating has to be a 2.5 for me. I the inconsistency of the brisket and the price of 13.99 a pound is enough to make me want to give below a 3, but I can't really give at 2.5 can I Yelp? So I am going to bump it up to a 3. Why? Primarily because they have fantastic service. Also partly because they have great Cole Slaw, which is offset by the insanely salty potato salad.

I had some brisket, turkey, chicken and sausage...yes alot dont judge me. My favorite was brisket and chicken, the hot bbq sauce was so GOOD. You go right in grab a tray and pick whatever you want.

  • Food L.

This is the best bbq you can get in Midland. This is as TX bbq as it gets folks, ordering meats by the pound. My only complaint is the portion size of the cobbler. It's like a sample.

    (4)
  • Cody R.

Probably the best BBQ in town. Atmosphere feels like a true Texas BBQ joint. Old, rustic and outdoorsy feeling, but clean and good. Seems a little pricey, but solid meat isn't cheap anywhere you go. Even Dickies BBQ chain is high priced. Stop in for some especially if you're not from Texas. You'll enjoy the BBQ and the experience!

    (4)
  • Darren R.

The barbecue was really good but I didn't expect to pay $30 for lunch it's a little pricey

  • Mark J.

Eyes bigger than stomache! GREAT Q in a fun beyond casual place. Not cheap when you buy by weight but the leanest meatiest biggest dry rub pork ribs I have ever found. Definitely a must go unless you have manners or cloth fetish.

KD's is the go to place for BBQ in Midland. If you see a line that is out the door of any restaurant you know that is a good sign and most days KD's line is out the door. The wait is worth it and the line goes quickly. You get up to the cooker and can pick any meat you want. I usually go with the brisket, turkey and Jalepeno sausage. They weigh your food and it can be pricey so if your wallet is tight get a pipe salesman to take out for a free meal! They have cobbler and cheese as your walking through the line to pay. Cheese and Brisket go together. Go to the sauce table and grab your bread and beans and then they have a lot of seating. You can have big parties at KD's and it is a great place to take friends who are looking for good BBQ! After KD's you will want to head back to the office and take 2:30 nap. Enjoy!

The food is flavorful. Servings are a bit small for the price. Service could be friendlier, maybe it was a bad day... Overall I'd go back but with lower expectations.

  • Xaben P.

The brisket was very good and tender Enjoyed seeing the meat all displayed on grill No such thing as good cheap BBQ, and you pay for what you get. The small bread bar is great would like to see more side items offered. Thank you we will be back

Overpriced Chicken and sausages were dry but ribs were pretty good. I am glad i gave this place a try but I'll eat somewhere else next time

Saw the reviews on Yelp and decided to check this place out. It is truly a smoke house BBQ restaurant. Walk in and you're walking into the pit area, heated with all sorts of meat laid out. I chose the brisket, ribs, sausage and peppers. All was absolutely fantastic, however, the brisket was a little to dry for me. I think they should wrap the brisket in foil to keep the moisture sealed in. If you enjoy smoke house bbq then this is the place to go. Wouldn't say its the best in Texas because I haven't been to all the smoke bbq houses here. So in my book they deserve a 4 star rating. Its definitely that good.

    (4)
  • Philip B.

I am learning that disappointment and west Texas BBQ go hand in hand. KD's is no exception. There is no smoke smell anywhere in or around the place leaving me to believe they use electricity (definitely not real BBQ). The staff is friendly and the decor is kinda neat but the food is below average and very over priced. I'll let the pic of the brisket (sold by weight no less) I got tell the rest of that story. KD's is the perfect place if you are into high priced, oven cooked fat.

Omg love there brisket amazingly moist and jalapeños sausage just the amout of heat tried all the bbq sauces favorite was hot one and sweet ...kids love the beans and potatoe salad....will definitely come back...

Returned last night and had finally was able to get my fingers on some of their ribs. Completely fall off the bone / melt in your mouth amazing. Going to change my rating up to a 5.

I'm not sure what's wrong with Midland folks that claim this is good BBQ...it is Midland though... Service is great and that's where the one star comes from. This place is way overpriced for what they serve. It's very poor quality food as well. Save your money and eat decent BBQ elsewhere.

We live in Odessa so a place has to be pretty good for us to make a trip of almost 30 mintues to eat there. We have been here about 4 times in the past two months, the first time it was amazing. The brisket was ok to me but I loved the pulled bbq pork and hot sausage. the next visit the food was the same, but the third trip we noticed the quality changed some. Sadly with our last trip on 11/1/14 it went down hill. I noticed the usual guy we met was no longer there. My husband got 3 slices of brisket at $13, i had pulled brisket, chicken and sausage( doing my usual small portions to ensure a low price) for about $9. My pulled brisket in bbq sauce was good, bit dry tasting. the chicken was dry, and the sausage was off for some reason. The potato salad tasted a little hotter than normal. the sweet tea tasted like it didnt have any sugar to it. My husband said the brisket he got was dry so i suggested adding bbq sauce to it. it didnt help one bit. He offered me a pieced and i spit it out immediately. it was so dry and tasted like fish, i noticed it was over cooked. He was wanting to leave but paying $13 for THAT i wasnt going to let it go. I wanted to talk to a manager but apparently the lady wanted to avoid that. She had the guy at the pit open the new brisket and allowed my husband to try it. the meat was juicy. She gave him 3 slices to go. I thought this was very generous( the guy who weighs the food was not pleased at all since it was free). When we got home later and i reheated the brisket we found out the bark on the outside of the brisket tasted like gas. We refuse to head back there again. It looks to be run by people who are not from this country. I have learned over time that when they take over a place the quality of food and service go down hill fast. We will miss this place, food WAS good until now. Bring back the old cook, stop using gas to start your fires.

  • Calvin M.

The brisket was extremely fatty and they were all out of side orders of corn and potatoes. The chopped brisket tasted old. The beer was very good and cold. The seating sucked because there was very little air conditioning and a lot of flies. It cost me $38 to eat here by myself I do not think I will be back for that price.

A bit hit and miss. We've been there several times and the kids love it. They love that it's in a barn and you get to pick your meat from the pit. The white bread in the bag at the bean bar makes them happy as well. They can also pick ice cream out of a cooler, which is always fun when you're a kid. As for the food...more miss than hit. I've found the brisket to be great one day, then dry and disappointing the next. I've seen a smoker on their property, but don't see it smoking. Nothing in the pit is actually cooking in the pit, just staying warm. Closed on Sundays & Mondays. Kind of inconvenient if you have out-of-town guests that want to try it out. Four people (2 adults 2 kids) still costs us about 50 bucks.

Out of tower looking for some W. Texas BBQ. Stopped in here, staff is friendly, bread on table was a little unsanitary and stale, BBQ sauce was flavorful. Brisket and mixed sausages were good could have been warmer. Rib was "meh". Brisket does not news sauce. Baked potato was over done. Glad I came in here. Will check other places out when I return to town, but would visit again.

Terrible, terrible customer service and policies. I've been here twice - once as a walk in and then again as a pre-paid pre set menu customer as part of a vendors appreciation lunch. You wouldn't believe the difference. First time round, they piled the tray up with way to much food - you pay by the pound you see, so they get all angry and annoyed when you start asking them to take back half the ribs etc because it is way too much. Enter the second option - pre set menu where you get two meats and a side. This time round, I got a single rib and two small slices of sausage totaling a pathetic amount of food ( this was apparently now two servings of meat). These policies are offensive and the attitude of the server is a disgrace. Avoid the pre-set option at all costs, at a minimum, because they do all they can to rip you off.

Great BBQ!!! I have lived in midland for 2 yrs now and this is by far my favorite place to eat. All the meat is presented on the a large grill when you walk in, you pick what you want and they cut you off a piece right there. It can be a little pricey because the meat is priced by how much it weighs. If it's you first time I would recommend the brisket and ribs.

From all the BBQ reviews I'd read for joints between Midland/Odessa, KD's had some decent comments. I had tried Sam's in Midland and was thoroughly disappointed (asking if the ribs were St. Louis style cut and being answered West Texas style ribs...um?) so I hoped KD's could be that silver lining behind the West TX dust storms. Located right off I-20 and pulling up to KD's...you will think you're about to enter a feed store. Due to the abscence of smoke outside and upon entering inside...it may just as well be a feed store. The inside is setup very cool and would be a great place to grab a couple beers and a couple ribs but nothing more than that. The meat is displayed on the pit for you to choose when you walk in. I asked the kid manning the pit what kind of smoker they used...he didn't know. Another employee mentioned a big rotisserie kind. Good to know. I then asked if the sausage is handmade and it's from Ben E. Keith. Oh boy. Insert first note...Dear Ben E. Keith...stick to making crappy beer and not crappy sausage. The pit employee cut off what looked like a promising 1/4 lb. of burnt end brisket. I also ordered two ribs and asked what they used for rub...again, he didn't know. Amazing someone who mans the pit has no knowledge of their product. A bit inexcusable if you ask me and I'm no novice. I bit into the jalapeno cheese sausage and (insert second note) Schoepf's BBQ (Belton, TX) I think Ben E. Keith stole your recipe...or rather I have a good idea who distributes your sausage too. Taste is too similar with the same overbearing amount of cheese oozing out. One bite and done on this. The brisket was next and it was great...if you prefer the crust to actually taste badly burned and hard. Also if you enjoy your meat being dry with no smoke. Overcooked with too much heat. The ribs were very good minus smoke. Rub was heavy on the pepper corn, salt and a sweet taste as well. I'm guessing maple and honey. There was actually pink in the rib meat, it was moist and did peel off the bone easily. The BBQ sauces, original and spicy delivered but not even these antidotes could make the meat easy to take down. Even their Ben E. Keith bread was dried out. I give up. I feel sorry from within my deep fried heart for all those Yelp reviews who think KD's is 3,4, and 5 star worthy. I can only imagine the pain of being stuck in West Texas, counting tumbleweeds as they roll by and being stuck with overpriced below mediocre Que. For a BBQ joint who states "Getcha' some of this"...no thanks, I'd rather not. There's plenty of authentic taquerias down the road. Getcha' some tacos instead.

Maybe I got a bad batch but non of the meat tasted THAT great. Everything was either mediocre or kinda stale. The brisket was good. But the ribs were bad. Dry and too peppery. The worse part for me was that the guy said it's everything for 13.95 so I started asking him to put on all the meats so I can try it. Then I go up to the register and it turns out to be 13.95 a pound, and I had like 2 pounds of food! At that point I felt bad and just paid for it.

Great barbecue in Texas! Your plate is a tray with wax paper on it! Eat all you want in this BBQ joint! Pretty cool atmosphere too!

With all respect to the previous reviewers but I have to ask WHY do you make a positive comment about sweet tea, peach cobbler and potato salad?Did you go to KD's just to review THAT? It's all about the BBQ! And that's what I am going to do. KD's is a poor excuse for a restaurant and a poorer excuse for BBQ? We are local residents and have eaten here many times over the years and we are finally calling "calf rope"! We have had enough. No Mas! I think the letters " KD" stands for the initials of the owners. "K" is for Kathy. Maybe "D" stands for Doug? Good help is hard to hire in Midland right now but KD suffers more from the owner's greed and neglect than from the staff's lack of knowledge. However, I do agreewith the other reviewer about the staff's lack of knowledge. You don't actually get to pick your meat from the pit. You get to pick it from a warming pit. I think the actual pit is in an adjacent building on the property. But I have never actually seen the pit. Most BBQ places have mountains of wood next to their pits. It's not readily viewable at KD's. Who knows where the pit is located? Only the "Shadow" knows for sure..... which is about all you will see of the owners on the premises, at least in the evenings. But let's get back to KD's BBQ. The meat is wrapped in foil and displayed on the warming pit. The brisket is stored, wrapped in foil and perhaps Saran Wrap, in ice chests stacked next to the warming pit. Only the attendant know how long it stays in storage and on the warming pit. My wife brought dinner home from KD's this week. The brisket was almost all fat and mushy from being wrapped too long in foil and left on the warming pit far too long! On the bright side....if I had no teeth the brisket could just as easily be "gummed" and then swallowed. Digestion though is another topic. The cost of this fatty barely edible take home dinner with a pint of beans and potato salad for 3 was an eye watering $70.00. Makes you go Hmmm doesn't it. KD's pretty little attendants will be glad to poor ice tea for you but that's the extent of their waitressing. BUT you have ample opportunity to tip because KD has tip jars EVERY WHERE! At the register and in the center of every table in the joint and by the oil field sized igloo coolers of ice tea. If you have the urge for BBQ while you are in Midland, I suggest buying a pit and doing it yourself. You won't be any worse than KD's and a $70 a pop you can pay for a pit pretty quickly. if you don't have time to do it yourself, then wait until you are going to Austin for the weekend or maybe Dallas. If you are driving through Midland on I-20, there is a Whataburger across the street. Any place is better than this place!

I had high hopes for this place after reading some of the reviews and was sorely disappointed. The exterior isn't much to look at, but it's been my experience those places turn out the best BBQ - oh how I was wrong. The first thing I noticed was the lack of the smell of smoke. I've been to plenty of good BBQ joints and each one smelled of smoke on the outside. When I walked inside I must have looked like a newbie because the waitress explained to me what I needed to do to get my food without me even asking. KD's claim to fame is picking your meat straight from the pit. When I think of a pit, I think of the pit's I've seen in Lockhart and Austin. They lifted the lid to the small pit and all the meats and sides were sitting in aluminum pans. Seriously?!?!?! Made me wonder when and where the meats were smoked. I chose my meats (brisket & sausage) and headed to the checkout where you can grab a side, a drink, or dessert. The interior is great. It's housed in an old garage with lots stuff on the walls. I grabbed some additional condiments (bread, pickles, jalapenos, onions & BBQ sauce) and sat at a table near one of the big screen TV's. The meat looked promising, but even though my cut of brisket had a fair amount of fat, it was rather dry and smoke taste was odd. I'm not sure what kind of wood they used, but it had a funny taste. The sausage wasn't all that good either. I like when the skin on the links pop when you bite into it and the skin definitely didn't pop, not to mention the sausage had no texture or flavor to it. Boring if you ask me. I tried their BBQ sauce as I like my brisket wet and it was a bit too sweet for my taste - too much honey. I hate to waste food, but I just wasn't into finishing my plate. I live in NJ and can't get good BBQ, but I'm not going to eat poor BBQ either. I'm sorry, I really wanted to like this place, but it's nowhere close to the BBQ joints in and around Austin.

I had just flown in from LAX early in the AM and told my parents to take me to to a BBQ joint. We found this place online and decided to give this place a try. We got here and waited for 20 minutes till it opened and I'm glad we waited! The place is so down to earth and the staff was friendly, but the variety and amount of choices available were kind of overwhelming I had no idea what to pick! We made our choices and by the way I loved the way the bbq is served on a tray. I've come to notice that's the way the best bbq is served, who needs plates for bbq? weird. This place was so refreshing and after my first bite I was like, "Yep, I'm definitely in Texas!" Needless to say, every time I fly into MAF from now on I will be heading directly to this spot! Can't wait! This kind of BBQ does not exist in my neighborhood in West Hollywood/Beverly Hills. It's unheard of!

This is by far the best BBQ in Texas. There was a place in Sundown TX that was a close runner up, but this is better. The ambiance is awesome. The owners are spot on nice with the most genuine hospitality around. When you walk in there, grab a tray, and somebody will open up the pit, and fill your tray up with savory tender meat. The workers are happy, and everybody cohesively gets along. They are the sweetest people in Texas too.

Update 2: Tried this place again. I went at noon thinking the meat would be fresh off the BBQ. However the brisket is still really dry, ribs where dry, the hot links were cold. I guess the tang in I tasted in the potato salad last time is supposed to be in it. The other guy I ate lunch with was not impressed either. He said the beans were plain. Fox News was still playing on all 3 TV's in the place. The place was packed for lunch, so most people must not feel the way I do. Update: A personal note from the owner made me up the stars on my review. Of all the reviews (good or bad) this is the first time the owner has sent me a message. I plan on giving them a second chance this week since I'm back in town. Going earlier in the day this time. All these other reviews must have had a completely different view of this place than I did. First issue was Fox News on the TV's. Notice to business owners, you will loose more customers than you gain by expressing your radical political views. Second issue was the cleanliness. You walk in the door and they hand you a tray and a piece of paper to put your food directly on. The whole place had a dusty, would never pass inspection, feeling. Third issue was the food. After getting your piece of paper they open the lid on the meat storage box. Lots of different meats in aluminum trays. They had been sitting there for how long? Who knows. All the meat was cold, or just slightly warm. Dried out from sitting over the heat for hours. Good flavor on the dried out brisket though. The ribs had a bad texture, again probably from being over the heat. You pay by the pound (about $12.00 per pound) so dont waste that on chicken or other cheap meats. After the meats you are greeted by the sides. $1.50 for each small side. A large tray of apple pie was there, it had been picked over. The potato salad had an off flavor, it may have turned bad. There are no servers here, This is not a sit down place. Its more cafeteria style, go through the line then go eat. Im sure if you get the food fresh off the grill it is very good, but going at 8:00 pm, it is old and dried out. Too many failures for a single restaurant.

Had my husbands 50th birthday party at this place. Decided to do it here because of the large Bar room you can rent, (reasonable price) and Ms K was very helpful and great with details. We were able to set up and decorate earlier and it was a Saturday the party turned out great and the crew stayed right there and Bar-tended as well as making sure my guest had everything they needed. They only charge for the food for the ones that actually eat there they keep track. Love this place for lunch or dinner and now for trowing parties..

I've always had good barbecue at KD's. Usually I get sliced sausages with sauce and sliced brisket but they have a good variety of barbecued meats. You select your meats as you go in and they put them on waxed paper and weigh them; the price is according to weight. The side dishes are fairly good including potato salad and cobbler. Another nice side dish is a thick slice of real cheddar cheese. The barbecue sauce is my favorite out of any of the places around here and there are several types available to serve yourself along with other condiments such as pickles, beans, onions, and bread. There is a bar-type area with a jukebox and I always liked to play it although I don't know that it was working right the last time I tried it. The atmosphere is like an old barn with lots of antiques around and there is also an outdoor dining area with picnic tables. In addition there is a separate building on the property in an old gas station which serves the same kind of food as the main building. The main building is only open certain hours, I think mainly at lunch time and weekends maybe later, but the auxiliary location in the converted gas station is open later. The lady who is the owner along with the rest of the staff is always very polite and they'll remember you if you come several times and be glad to see you when you come back. My only slightly negative comment is that it is somewhat expensive...a modest amount of barbecued meat is usually $10-13 per person for the meat alone.

This place was absolutely awesome. After getting past the fact that what appeared to be the enterance was in fact the exit, and the enterance was a door that appeared to be a side service enterance I was in BBQ heaven. Grab a tray and the chef piles your BBQ straight on the paper from the open pit. Delicious side items are selected from a buffet and pay at the end of the line just like at a caferteria... what isn't like a caferteria is the taste. some of the best home cooking I have ever had and the decor is very entertaining.

Walked in expecting to smell smoke...nada. Not truly pit bbq, didn't have pork loin, which I thought was odd...tasted ok but WOW so EXPENSIVE!!!!!! Way to expensive for the quality. Or lack of.

This place has some solid BBQ. You walk in, grab a tray with wax paper, and select all of the different meats that suit you. At the end, they simply weigh the meat and charge you a fixed price per lb (which is a little on the pricey side). Despite the price: -I think the BBQ was great. I had a selection of ribs, chopped beef, brisket, and sausage (way too much food). From best to worst: sausage, brisket, chopped beef, ribs -They have many (free) fixings to choose from (multiple types of BBQ sauce, pickles, onions, jalapeños, etc.) -Great atmosphere, friendly staff If you're keen to BBQ, I'd recommend giving this place a try. Either some of the other reviewers caught KD's on an "off day" or I don't have very good taste in BBQ!

Best Bar-B-Q I've ever had! The brisket was so tender and their sauce is mouthwatering. Very friendly service..helpful, attentive, etc. Be careful getting up the massive steps though...has anyone ever taken a dive off of them?

KD's the food is good, I would not call it great or outstanding. You pay by the pound so you can get as much or as little as you want. I do like there BBQ sauces, which they have several, from mild to hot enough for you. KD's has the usual assortment of sides all which are good. I usually go to KD's a couple of times a year, probably would go more if it was closer to down town. The wife is not much of a fan so it is way down her list of places to eat at.

This may have been the best BBQ I have ever had. My boyfriend and I ate there driving from Midland to Austin on a whim. We really had no idea what kind of place we were going to. You wait on a line before you even get inside to pick out your meat from the grill. We both had some brisket and ribs. You can get sides of beans and cole slaw. The meat was just incredible. The sauce was sweet and perfect. I looked up from eating and realized that I had gotten sauce all over my face, but honestly didn't care. The atmosphere is also great, very Texas-style. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves good BBQ. This is what Rudy's tried to imitate (and although they're good), they could never compare to K D's.

BEST BBQ I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!!! this is the real deal folks. slap your meat down on some wax paper. get yourself some baked beans. some potato salad too. and hell yeah- we're eatin' in an old tin garage! this is real bbq, big ol' TEXAS style. i came across this place while driving from austin back to california. i was touring with a band and all we wanted was some real deal texas bbq. we saw this place off the freeway and risked it. the interior was great. an old garage turned into a restaurant? rad! and when we ate, man, we thought we had died and went to bbq heaven! anyhow, i always tell people about this place, back here in california. we have nothing like it. only in texas, folks. one day hopefully i'll be back... and with a smile as big as texas on my face!

If you want good BBQ, this is the place. Our dealer took me there last time. I couldn't wait to go back and take my co-worker. Worked a12hr day and went straight to it. Walked in, you pick up a tray and they put the meat right on the tray. (only way to eat BBQ). Picked the brisket, hot links, potato salad, slaw, and of course, sweet tea. You pay by the pound. A little pricey, but worth it. Top it off with a bean, sauce, and condiment bar, and all I could say at the end was "oink!" My buddy kept trying to win the "eat till you die" contest, but didn't make it. He couldn't believe how good it was. I travel globally. This is one of the best! Friendly staff tops it all off.

Once again, THANK YOU FELLOW YELPERS. This place is AMAZING. The meat is so soft, tender, and juicy. The BBQ sauce is delicious. The price isn't bad at all. Limitless sweet tea. So so glad my friend decided to stop here for lunch today. Best BBQ I've had.

Now I am proud to say that I have had my share of BBQ in my day. I have had great BBQ and BBQ that made me want to give it up forever. I can say without doubt that K D's is one of the best BBQ joints I have ever eaten at. In good BBQ style, K D's is in a large tin building right off a main road. When you walk in, you grab a tray with a piece of wax paper on it and walk up to the large grill where a guy pulls your choice of meats off the grill and puts it on your tray. You walk to the next room where they put the wax paper wtih meat, no tray, onto a scale and weigh it. Moving along you get your sides - potato salad, coleslaw, peach or cherry cobbler, while a guy asks you what you want to drink. Sweet tea is highly recommended. After you pay the cashier, there isa Be. an Bar. I showed that I was a "Newbie" (thats what the owner caled me!) when I was wondering in circles around the bar. The bean bar is pretty amazing with slices of bread, beans, and of course plenty of sauces. The large dining room was packed full of locals who were friendly. While we sat there, a owner came up, called me a Newbie and chatted about stuff. I told her we were from L.A. and she was very excited. She was even more excited when I told her I found K D's on Yelp. She was so excited in fact that she sent her son over to ask more about it. Great people, great food.

The rule of relativity normally applies to Midland (and infrequently Odessa): 3-star dining anywhere else is 5-star dining here. Not the case for KD's BBQ. This place can hold its own against the best Texas BBQ has to offer. The jalapeno sausage and brisket combined with fair cobbler and a range of surprisingly good BBQ sauce (hot, normal, & sweet) make this a destination even if you have to drive into town for it. Also, a high-five for playing up the country ambiance with the decor. Truly this is the oasis in a desert that is West Texas.

What a great experience! Some friends and I were on military orders on our summer AT, and Kathy really took care of us. The service was great and the food was exceptional! The staff was some of the friendliest I have encountered in some time. The ribs were about the best I have had in Texas. The brisket was moist and tender, and was perfect with or without the fantastic sauces, of which there were at least four. I wish I had more opportunity to come to Midland, because I would definitely be a regular.

I tend to not like giving negative reviews, b/c who knows, it could be a bad day in the kitchen. But I was not impressed. The brisket was too dry. I 'll tell you the real problem, I think they try to do TOO much. They smoke chicken, turkey, ham, pork loin, pork ribs, brisket, and several different kinds of sausage. I just didn't think any of it was that great. I would like to go back and give them a second shot.

I was in Midland and was told to check this place out by some locals. I think it is an old gas station that is now a great BBQ location. The eating area inside is very unique and works perfectly for the location. The food was pretty good. You pay by the pound and can select the various meats you want. I had some pork ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork, and hot links. The beef brisket was the best of the meats. You can also get the basic "BBQ" sides. I had beans, which were not really that good and actually were cold. If you are going to take the food to go, make sure you get lots of bread and extra BBQ sauce. Check this place out if you want some Texas BBQ in Midland.

Wow, am I really the first to review? This is the best BBQ you will ever have in your life, and I don't mess around when it comes to BBQ. I recommend the chopped beef. You pick whatever meat you want, and then there are loaves of bread and BBQ sauce and everything you need to make a sandwich at the condiment bar in the middle of the tables. I think the building might be a converted barn. It's in the middle of nowhere, Texas, which automatically makes it legit. I stop here every time I drive between LA and Dallas. 'nuff said.

Don't go in the exit door. The line starts at the side door. The lunch was crowded, and the wait in line was about 8 mins. I went for brisket and a couple of ribs. smoked jalapeno as well. rib was good, sweet, regular, and vinegar bbq sauces available. I wish there had been a 'hot'. The brisket was so divine. Yelp pointed me right this time. Lots of authentic west Texas signage everywhere to look at inside. Brisket so good, I bought a large chunk, had it double wrapped up and put in a ziploc bag, got right on the plane and brought it home for dinner in Denver.

The finest BBQ you will find, a beacon in the otherwise horrible west Texas oil city of Midland.

First of all, I love KD's Bar-B-Q. With that being said, I've eaten some pretty good barbecue around Texas. Kreutz Barbecue in Lockhart, along with Black's, and Smitty's, or Cooper's in Llano, depending on the day and the time, and the mood of the staff, you will find the best brisket anywhere. KD's is up there with those guys. And, although ribs are hit or miss for any restaurant, or any home smoker, for that matter, KD's also acquits themselves well. Sausage? Sorry, but there is only one place on the planet to get sausage, and that's Southside Meat market in Elgin, Texas. No comparison anywhere. But, as I say, I really like KD's, and go there everytime I'm in Midland.

KD's was our 2nd experience eating BBQ in Texas on a recent trip back to Alabama. We had driven from El Paso and was going to spend the night in Big Spring. We stopped in Odessa to eat, however couldn't find anything decent. As we drove towards Big Spring, we saw a freeway sign for KD's and decided to see what it was like. When we drove up it looked like maybe it wasn't even open. We discovered where the entrance was and that indeed it was open. We walked up the ramp and went through a screen door. We were immediately greeted by a Hispanic woman who asked if we'd been there before. We said no, so she proceeded to explain to us how it all worked. Then a very nice young man came up and greeted us. It was an experience we will remember for a long time. Not only was the food fantastic, the ambiance of the whole place was fantastic. I asked if I could take pictures and I took a whole bunch. They are posted on my blog as I blogged that trip. Our final destination was Enterprise, AL. We returned west through the southern part of Texas otherwise we would have stopped at KD's again!!
