Jeff's is one of my favorite restaurants in Murfreesboro. The people are friendly and the food is perfect. I've never had a dish I didn't like and the desserts are not worth passing up. Go to Jeff's!! Eat their food!

The good kind of dive. Caffeteria style: pick a meat, pick 3 sides. It reminds me of going to grandma's! A perfect place to take out of town guests who want "southern cookin."

  • Joanna R.

Yay for our first meat and three! The rib plate was awesome, and I'd pick the flap jack corn bread over the hot water corn bread. We took home a slice of caramel cake and chocolate cake. Both were really good.

Looking for something to eat while working and always stay away from chains! This came up on yelp and was very happy it did. You would not find this driving around, off the beatin track. Great home cookin, large portions, priced right and were friendly. I will come back for the Catfish!!!!

This is straight up just a meat and some sides. Not great sides, but OK sides. Definitely not a five star place like all the reviews. The banana pudding was pretty good.

We went for dinner this evening based on wonderful yelp reviews. Jeff's is located in a residential neighborhood off of Mercury Blvd. Before we even had a chance to look at the menu, we were greeted and approached by the staff. A nice lady showed us the specials and a man showed us the sides. My husband and I both chose the Cajun catfish with two sides and a bread choice. I chose the okra, mac & cheese, and hot water cornbread. Hubs chose the mac & cheese, cream corn, and yeast roll. The fish is made to order but we didn't wait very long. It was almost an empty restaurant at 5pm on a Thursday. When our food came out, they had given me a piece of the flapjack cornbread as well. Literally everything was great. The catfish was hot and the breading was crispy and a little spicy. The sides were good and I can't wait to try different ones next time. All of the bread was great but the roll and the flapjack cornbread were excellent. It will be a tough choice between those two on our next visit! This was a huge plate of food (that we both magically cleared!) that only set us back $7.95 per plate. Sadly they were making banana pudding but I didn't get to try any. I promised them we would be back to try it and I will keep that promise! During our meal, we were checked on multiple times by multiple people. You can tell they really care about their customers and the delicious food they make. Great home cookin', friendly staff, and less than 2 miles from our house. We will for sure be back!

I now know why Jeff's has such great ratings. Talk about down home comfort food! I had a huge piece of chicken fried steak with gravy, deliciously seasoned cabbage, fried okra and flapjack cornbread, which was buttery, sweet, crispy on the outside and not too dense on the inside. My husband raved about his fried chicken, mac and cheese and mashed potatoes with gravy. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the okra was a bit chewy. Jeff's Mom came by to check on our table several times and was so sweet. Another bonus is you are served from a buffet line, so if you are absolutely starving as I was, you will get instant gratification. Will definitely be returning!

My boys and I recently had lunch at Jeff's. It was my first time there. It is a hole in the wall place with not much of an atmosphere, but they have very friendly service and decent food. This is definitely a "family" restaurant. A lot of the family works there. I have a cajon catfish sandwich and my boys had the fried chicken. It was all very tasty. They have excellent looking cakes and desserts. All homemade! If you like homemade cooking, this is the place for you.

Just got back from lunch at Jeff's,.... and WOW. a friend of mine kept telling me i had to try this place, and I'm so glad he did. I could literally eat here every single day. Great "Meat & 3" place tucked a little ways off the square on Hancock St. You walk in and get in line (and at lunchtime, there will be a line) You will place your order "cafeteria style" , pay, and find a table and when it is ready they will bring it out to you. Ordered the country fried steak w/ white gravy, green beans, and mac n cheese With flap jack cornbread. $12.75, And I have half of it left over for a second meal. If you're missing mama's cookin- This is your place.

As usual I go to Yelp in search of good eats on a Sunday, that me and my sister can go grub at. I came across Jeff's as the only restaurant left in the Boro with a 5 star avg rating. This surprised me, and of course curiosity kills me, so I had to check it out once the opportunity came.....and boy did the reputation that Yelp gave Jeff's stick with me. I came in and it certainly did look like a family owned restaurant, which I definitely took to heart and appreciated. I ordered a BBQ plate with pinto beans and a flapjack. First off, the Ribs were awesome, not as great as Kleer Vu's, but definitely way above average ribs. The beans were flavorful and warm, and the Flapjack was just sensational, so nice and fluffy it was :) I forgot to mention my sister's mash potatoes and chicken. Ok so they basically gave us an entire bird, and this bird was so nice and juicy, and the BBQ sauce in top was top notch. Her Mash Potatoes were like Kleer Vu's, freshly made and delicious. Lastly, the Banana pudding and chess pie. I've never tried chess pie before, but it was just a pie full of deliciousness! Now the Banana pudding.......My God, this pudding was just....I don't even know! There is not enough praising adjectives in the English vocabulary to describe this desert. This is one of, if not the BEST desert I have ever had at a restaurant! On a different subject, the Staff. The entire staff is one big happy Family. Our server was Mattie, who is the mother of Jeff and the others. And she is just the sweetest thing alive, she'll treat you as if you were her own children. Honestly this place is just fantastic. If you've never gone, and you have a chance to go.... THEN GO!!!

First time in. Greeted ever so politely. Was told of other delicious food that wasn't on menu. Everyone is so nice. My wife ordered the BBQ chicken plate and I ordered the rib plate. Let me tell you! The servings per plate was enough to feed 2. OMG! So freaking delicious! The BBQ chicken was so tender it could just fall off the bone. The rib was so tender it could just melt off the bone. No sauce needed because the was sauce was so good. I'm recommend this place to anyone and everyone. The building itself is nothing extraordinary but its a mom and pop place of yummy soul food. What do you expect?... I will be coming back. And last but not least.... NomNomNomNom!!!

I was very disappointed when I got here and sat down to eat my food. The presentation was very nice like a old-school kind of restaurant however, when it came time to eat the food was extremely bland. I had catfish Macand cheese and pinto beans and sweet tea.

We stopped in at Jeff's to grab some take out after a long day of hiking. Blown away by how good it was. We got the fried catfish, pork steak, fried chicken and pork shoulder plates. Everything was awesome. The sides are great. Really good collards, beans and slaw. Get the corn bread flapjacks too. A big slice of lemon cake that was enough for three! You can tell they put a lot of love into the food. They're working on a second location too.

If you want home cooking like Mama used to make, this is the place. It might make you forget your Mama's food. I love the fried chicken. I don't think they serve the meatloaf anymore, which is a shame. It was wonderful. After you finish, be prepared to take a long nap. And you might want to wear sweat pants or something with an elastic waistline, just to be on the safe side.

I really hate to give a bad review, but we were very disappointed. We were passing through Murfreesboro, and based on the reviews, we decided to go to Jeff's for our Mother's Day lunch. It was lunchtime on a Sunday. The dining area was about half full, and our wait in the cafeteria style line was very short. That's was the one positive thing. There were 5 of us in our party, and unfortunately we all felt the same way about our experience. All of our food was served from the line, and all of it was cold. The fried okra was not only cold but rubbery. The veggies in general were either too salty or too sweet based on what they were. The fried chicken was also cold. As for its flavor, I can only say that it was okay. We had to wait for clean silverware- and when it came out it still looked dirty to me. So much so that we rinsed them in a water cup and wiped them down. I know this review is contrary to the majority, so maybe we just happened to be there on a day when things were not going well in the kitchen.

I do love to eat. I also love local businesses as they are truly the heart of a community. Jeff's Family Friendly combines hometown atmosphere with delectable soul food--meat and three style--and does it the friendliest folks around. You know they love being there and love what they do. Jeff Sowell started this, his first restaurant, in 2006 but he is no stranger to food service. He had been in the food industry his entire life, starting in Junior High running a barbecue pit for a Holiday Inn. He has been cooking ever since, working his way up to the position of dietary services for the NHC facility that burned down in Nashville several years ago. After that happened, Jeff struck out on his own. He started catering from his home and then moved into the current location in 2006. Jeff says he has the "largest pit in Murfreesboro" and uses a combination of hickory and mesquite (sometimes pecan) wood to smoke some of the best barbecue, ribs and chicken around. They serve home grown seasonal vegetables when available and truly enjoy their restaurant because it is "something different every day." They make everything from scratch each day and as Jeff put it, we are better than our competitors because "they don't put the love in it." The public agrees that Jeff's is a valuable addition to the Murfreesboro dining scene. The little hole in the wall has been featured on Tennessee Crossroads in 2011 and won "Best Meat n Three in the Boro" two years in a row from an MTSU student organization. Even with this public recognition, Jeff says his biggest rewards are from individuals. When they say "great job" or "awesome food", Jeff knows he is doing what he is supposed to be doing. Go visit Jeff's on Hancock Street just minutes from MTSU. They are open 11-6 Monday-Saturday and 11-5 on Sunday. My favorite is the rib tips on Fridays and the country fried steak. I also cannot pass up the cooked cabbage or the chess pie. Jeff's favorite is the pulled pork barbecue and the four layer cakes (that's right, 4 layers). I haven't had anything there I didn't like though. Tell him I sent you. Enjoy!

Finding this place was a happy accident! Was looking for antique shops on yelp and somehow came across this place in my search results! Had we not put this in our gps, we probably would have passed it and not realized it was a restaurant. I had the blackened catfish and my husband had the ribs. Both were delicious! I got mine with turnip greens, fried okra, and sweet potatoes. There were a lot of choices for sides. Everything we had was delicious and served with care. The staff was very friendly and checked on us a few times. We were definitely not hungry when we left...though we did eat every bite! We would definitely return if we were back in the area.

Jeff's Family Restaurant is Awesome!!! I got the Country Fried Steak w/ Green Beans and Dressing...It was exactly what I was looking for...Going back again today...

Ok. I had the fried chicken, green beans, collard-greens, fried okra and fried corn bread. You could tell that the green beans and collard-greens came from a can and the fired okra was frozen. The fried chicken was not bad, but not worth bragging about either. I've had better fried chicken at KFC or Publix's. My husband got the fried fish, which he said was great.

We don't have many meat-and-three places in Chicago, and if this is at all typical that's a disaster. But I can hardly believe Jeff's is typical of anything. Spectacular pork shoulder. Tender, robust BBQ ribs. All sides as though you were at your Grandma's house. Chess pie a showstopper. What every Southern-style family diner should be but so few restaurants of any stripe can be - just extraordinary.

I ate hear the other day because I wanted some good southern fried food because I don't get fried food at home and the chicken was super. It was plenty of parking for lunch and the service was great. The cakes looked good but partake in any. They had other dishes beside fried food also. The vegetable was really good. A really good meat and three for the family.

Just ate here. As good and authentic home cooking as you can find anywhere. Everything from scratch and the people as good as the food. Absolutely worth the 2 mile venture from the highway.

Went here for lunch, the chicken was great. The cajun catfish special was great. The guys behind the counter were helpful with explaining the sides of the day. The deserts were very good. The choc walnut chess pie is very good. The store is located in a residential area, so it is not so easy to find the first time. Thanks guys for a great lunch. See you next time we are in town.

This joint is tucked away in a residential area, and is rather nondescript on the outside, so it might be easy to miss. But...it's worth seeking out. This is, by far and hands down the best meat & 3 in Murfreesboro, and in my opinion, best in Middle Tennessee. We were greeted at the door by Jeff Sowell's (owner) mother, who took us through the menu when we told her it was our first time. An enthusiastic older couple heard us, and assured me that we'd be back again. The menu was expansive, but I picked out some favorites (salmon croquette, sweet potatoes, green beans, and hot water cornbread) and my mom did the same (chicken & dressing, sweet potatoes, cabbage, and a yeast roll). Every. Single. Item. Was. Perfect. The salmon was flavorful and tender, not greasy. The vegetables tasted like my grandma's. Every bit of it was from scratch, homemade, and delicious. Those yeast rolls were so heavenly that I went and paid for one for myself after I finished lunch. My mom and I could not stop making happy noises with each bite. Even the sweet/unsweetened tea were perfect. The owner's mother stopped by our table a few times to chat, and we gushed about how good everything was. We weren't sure if we could handle dessert, as we were so full. But, we ordered one in hopes that we wouldn't explode. We ordered one banana pudding, but it took a while for it to come out. Mrs. Sowell came to our table and presented us with two perfect and dainty servings of banana pudding in antique glass dishes, all gussied up like some kind of magazine shoot and said "I'm sorry it took so long, but I had to make this "first-time-customer banana pudding!"" Not only was it beautiful...it was the best banana pudding I've had outside my mom's kitchen. We're talking real custard, no weird merengue, and fresh bananas...I don't even eat bananas, and I ate every bit of this. These folks do not cut corners, and it shows in the food. The proof is, quite literally, in the pudding. The service is second to none, and the environment is relaxed and just downright delightful. This place is far better than Kleer-Vu (I'm a Murfreesboro native and former Kleer-Vu apologist). I recommend it highly, and cannot wait to go back and try the fried chicken and peach cobbler.

Smothered pork steak and beef ribs were tender and tasty. Great flavors! Green beans and black-eyed peas also had lots of flavor. Hubby said Mac and cheese is bland. Chocolate cake is huge and tastes amazing! Friendly staff. Appears clean. Will be back!

Chose this restaurant by yelp reviews. Not what we expected when we found it. Actually is cafeteria style but it did not disappoint! Delicious ribs and the cake is to die for!!! Especially the lemon cake!

Fantastic! Good food; Good folks. Nice friendly down home feel. Stopped in on a business trip from Atlanta to Chicago. Found them on Yelp and was very glad we did. Jeff and Jimi's mom helps in the dining room and is as sweet as they come. Good Christian mom who made our lunch more enjoyable. Hope we get to come back again.

I live almost walking distance from this place and just found out about it!!! I had the fish and it was to die for. This is the food I grew up on! I almost thought my grandma was in the back cooking. The staff was very nice. The gentleman working was very friendly, talked to us about the pie and the story that is packaged with each of the pies. The banana pudding was homemade, not store bought pudding mix. I am ready to go back and try the fired chicken.

Best meat and 3 in town. Way better than Kleerview. After going to Jeffs my first time with a friend, I went back the next day for lunch again. Nothing will be left on your plates when done eating. Dont forget about the great desserts like red velvet cake. Everything, including the sides, are made from scratch daily and delicious.
