Walking into the original Coletta's Italian Restaurant on South Parkway is like walking back in time (or, onto the set of a mob movie). Coletta's interior is perfectly old school. The restaurant has been open in Memphis since 1923, and they claim to have made the original barbecue pizza. If you've never tried barbecue pizza, bring a friend and try it at Coletta's. Their barbecue pizza has a thick crust, barbecue sauce, and is piled high with pork and cheese. It's a lot of food, no matter what size pie you order. Coletta's also has one of the best lunch specials in town. For $6.50, you get a big salad and your choice of a 6 one-topping pizza, lasagna or spaghetti. I usually get mine with a glass filled with half sweet tea, half lemonade to drink. I had a ham pizza for lunch today, and I'm so full of delicious goodness that I could fall asleep at my desk.

Coletta's has been one of the two Memphis iconic spots for Italian food for decades now. I can't recall ever having eaten a bad meal there and particularly enjoy their lasagna and spaghetti offerings. Oddly, I don't think I ever had a pizza here but would bet they are good too,

I've yet to have the pleasure to dine inside the confines of Coletta's, but reading the reviews I am ever so excited to get my booty on in here asap! My husband brought home an ever so delicious veggie pizza from here last week after work. Coletta's offered me up one of the best veggie pizza's I've had the pleasure to get my mouth around. It came piled high with onions, bell peppers, olives, pepperoncini peppers, and mushrooms. They were fresh, crispy and full of flavor. The crust? Well it's amazing in and of itself. I would eat it by itself- seriously. It is crispy and borders between a thin and thick consistency. It isn't cracker crust, but it ain't deep dish either. Whatever they are doing, they are doing it right. After visiting their website I cannot wait to get inside the doors and order off the menu. Simply because a) the menu is quite extensive and offers up a ton of awesomeness and b) the website started singing Dean Martin "That's Amore" to me. I heart that song and it makes me want to dance whilst eating spaghetti and meatballs.

Hands down the best spot in Memphis TN for pizza. For dining inside of the restaurant I like the Bartlett/Cordova location better than the South Memphis location. However, no matter which Coletta's location you visit the pizza will not disappoint. Coletta's is simply the best and I would recommend it to anyone/

I was born and raised in memphis now live in California. Keeping in mind that nothing is as good as it used to be, for all you tourist types the best pizza in this place is the "around the world pizza" (with or without anchovies). Don't know about anything else on the menu but this is your best bet for pizza at this joint.

My family and I went here recently after having not gone before. The service was ok nothing outstanding,We ordered the BBq pizza and the shrimp diane dish and we were greatly disappointed in both. We didn't even bother getting a take home box for either and there was half of both orders left. The pizza was terrible in flavor and the shrimp dish was as bland as could be and the shrimp honestly looked like the little salad shrimp you buy in the frozen food area of the grocery store, about the 50-60 count size. Would not recommend and will surely not go back.

Good, old Italian restaurant. Was there for lunch for the first time today. The spaghetti and sausage was a great lunch choice while my cohort had what he said was fabulous lasagna. The atmosphere is great and the staff is incredibly nice and interactive with the diners. I will certainly come here again.

Where do I start? SERVICE: slow as slow cooked pork in a smoker. Multiple items we asked for were never brought even after asking many times. Waitress even sat down at a table behind us and took a break before bringing us our order. DECOR: outdated. A good spring cleaning is long overdue. FOOD: not one of our 4 meals had any redeeming qualities. Lasagna was bland, spaghetti sauce was a bit brown in color and the specialty BBQ pizza was WEIRD. Definitely a disappointment. Seriously I know they have been around since 1933, but you couldn't pay me to come back. Skip this place.

We were seated quickly and had plenty to drink. However, the orders were slow to arrive during lunch. The general opinion at the table was that the food wasn't that great and overpriced. I don't like doing a less than positive review, but I hope this helps someone else in their dining decisions.

The BBQ pizza is thick, it's saucy, it's got lots of pork --- it's a very different experience than a pete and sam's bbq pizza -- but enjoyable and authentic as well - The toasted ravioli is spectacular - better than pete and sam's - everything here is a culinary happy place. the elvis room is worth seeing... this is a trip that is off the beaten path, but well worth doing - especially during an elvis week. They have an elvis room. Coletta's is a long standing Memphis institution in an area oft overlooked...

Coletta's is an Italian tradition in Memphis. It has been around since 1923. The website says that they are Memphis's oldest restaurant. However, the Arcade claims to have been around longer. The restaurant also claims to have invented the barbecue pizza. There are two locations, each with a different menu. We decided to visit the original location on South Parkway. One room is the Elvis room with plenty of Elvis memorabilia. The clientele was pretty diverse. Our waitress was very friendly. I went with the appetizer of black and green olives and peppers. It was pretty much what one would expect. The olives were pitted and unstuffed. I would have preferred pimentos or something. They have a full bar, and I had a high ball of Jack and coke. It was tasty, and about $5.50, I think. G chose the lasagna for his entree. It was a huge portion. It was a tasty lasagna. The set up is not a traditional layered lasagna. It was more of a mixed pasta style. Rolls accompanied our meal. They were average. One friend ordered the spinach. The entire menu is really set up more family style. The spinach is an entree sized portion, but I doubt anyone would only want to eat spinach. It was $7.50. It was good. It had eggs and cheese mixed into it. I chose the small vegetarian pizza. It was topped with peppers and olives. There was also plenty of cheese. I fell in love with the crust. It was a thicker crust, which I loved! I would love to go to the other location and compare the differences.

Everyone loves the BBQ pizza but I didn't care for it! My advice would be to skip the BBQ pizza, order side salad with homemade thousand island dressing and the cannoli! Stuffed with meat, garlic, spinach and drowned in cheese deliciousness! Great environment and fun with friends!

  • David M.

The original location is where Elvis and the 'Memphis Mafia' used to hang-out. Now the neighborhood is a ittle 'sketchy', but the food is just like an Italian Grandmother's. The old -school bar/lounge area alone is worth a look, but ask to see the 'Elvis' table, it looks big enough for a last supper. Around Valentine's Day, they make heart shaped pizzas. The lasagna and pizza aren't to be missed!

    (5)
  • Jen T.

When we saw the "Italian in the hood" Yelp review, we were intrigued. Neighborhood is pretty rough, but the food and service were good. First, ask to sit in the Elvis room. Lots of photos and autographs for Coletta's owners. If you get the servers we had, they'll tell you not only where Elvis sat, but about Lisa Marie coming in recently. She sat in the Blue Room in the back, which seemed off limits to mere mortals. It's not far from Graceland, and the chef cooks for Lisa when she's i. Town. She's vegetarian and loves the Chef's catfish and hush puppies, which aren't on Coletta's menu. All salad dressings are made on site, as are the sauces. We recommend Italian dressing for your Italian salad and meat sauce for your pasta. Judging from the at stream of takeout orders, it appears the pizza's good too. The only negative is that the place could use some updating. The curtain hanging near our table was old and dirty, as was the stool in the women's restroom. If you can overlook those types of things, this place is a good stop. Oh, and the prices are cheap.

Food is mediocre but atmosphere is amazing! I had never been to the Coletta's in the hood until last night and the restaurant is a hidden gem in the city. Dine in the Elvis room for a true Memphis experience with the king! As for the food: cheese sticks and garlic bread were good, fried ravioli was sub-par and the BBQ chicken pizza is better at other Memphis restaurants. The Lambrusco wine is heavenly and they offer a glass, half carafe and full carafe options.

I recently "dined" here for a school group event. YUCK! This is some of the worst food I've ever eaten in my life. In fact, I couldn't finish it. Memphis does not have many quality Italian restaurants and Coletta's is HORRIBLE. It's Chef Boyardee bad. Their pizza sux too. There are much better choices in Memphis. Mellow Mushroom, Memphis Pizza Cafe, High Point Terrace Pizza, Carraba's all have better pizza. Anyone giving this place favorable ratings really needs to get out more!

Had Coletta's on a list of possible dinner spots on our first trip to Memphis this past week. Was a little hesitant to go in when we only saw a few cars and no windows on the place, but we decided to take a chance and head in. We were sure glad we did! The homemade pasta sauce was delicious as was the cheesy garlic bread. Our server told us the history of the restaurant while we were there and that made it even more fun. Truly a delight and so happy we gave it a shot. We'll definitely stop back on our next trip!

Made a quick stop for dinner at Coletta's while driving from Little Rock to Nashville. My Mom-in-Law was raving about their BBQ pizza, and for good reason. It is tasty! However, as I am not a huge fan of BBQ Pizza, or BBQ Spaghetti - I like my BBQ on a bun, personally - I wished I had ordered a standard pizza, as the crust was perfection. My main reason for the three stars is that the pasta we ordered was quite boring. Nothing special about the noodles or the sauce. It tasted like it came out of a can. No flavor whatsoever. And the pasta was overcooked. I want to point out that we did have good service. Our waitress was very efficient. And I'll definitely be back to try a "normal" pizza, as I think I would really enjoy it.

Visited the original location for lunch yesterday. The building has seen better days, but the staff was nice enough. The decor is definitely old school, but the Elvis room was a cool treat to see. We enjoyed the toasted ravioli and my husband liked his BBQ chicken pizza. I had the spaghetti with meatballs and I am not a fan. The flavor was smokey, almost as if it had cooked down too long. We have lived in Italy, and this tasted nothing like spaghetti I enjoyed in Napoli. I would go again, but I would stick with the pizza.

BBQ pizza, BBQ pizza, BBQ pizza and the elvis room. Really cool bar that you would never want to hang out in. Unless you want to go somewhere where you will never see anyone you know. Just get the BBQ pizza.

LMAO @ "hearty balls". Okay, I digress. Perhaps the aforementioned BBQ pizza is just a Memphis thing, but I for one love it. My most favorite dish here is the lasagna. It is the basis on which all other lasagnas (mine included) are judged. I think they use American cheese, which is unconventional, but does lend a great flavor. Colletta's used to package and sell their ravioli & lasagnas in Kroger's frozen food section, but I haven't seen them in a long time. The neighborhood is a little scary, but, hey - its Memphis. We're always one street over from "scary".

Had to try what I had heard was a very popular place in Memphis, once loved by Elvis and his "mafia". And especially something called the BBQ pizza. I just have one thing to say: this thing fails miserably. What possesses someone from loading something that's already heavy and salty on top of a pizza. Isn't pizza in and of itself just a bread that needs a light topping ---vegetable slices, some cheese, some meats? But not a vigorous pile of BBQ meats that ordinarily would be fine by themselves. That was the big letdown for me. I admit I was curious and had to try it. Somehow I felt it could work in some way but all I could put down were two bites; the rest was way too overpowering and even cloying. I suppose this thing will always have its supporters ---love it or leave it. I say leave it and try instead what should be the more traditional pizzas that a self-respecting Italian-American restaurant should prepare. On the very big plus side, the spaghetti and meatballs were outstanding. Wonderfully thick, tasty sauce and hearty balls ---something that took some time and effort to prepare. Great bread and chopped garden salad as well. Pleasant service all around, and even at 9 pm, the place was bustling, as it should have been.

Would not recommend and will surely not go back.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
