Let's open with a fact about myself: I've been coming to this place since I was about six. My older brother--then about twenty-five--was into this sort of place. That was back when the walls were yellow and the board games sat on a shelf in the corner. We used to come in in the evenings, a whole group of us, and have coffee and, for six-year-old me, bagels and ice water. Everyone talked until closing time--at that point about eleven--and I remember sitting at the table with them. I suppose I could classify as a sentimentalist. This place is my favorite. Since that time, we stopped coming a for a while after my brother got married and had children. And then, when I was about twelve or thirteen, I discovered coffee. Namely, the fact that it is nectar from heaven. It follows that we showed up here. Often. Then I broke my back, and my friends and I claimed the back room for close to six months. Every week, at the very least. Sometimes twice. New owners bought the place, they renovated, and for a while I was unsure. It should here be mentioned that anytime I'm unsure I'm usually just thinking. Now it's Wednesday nights, around six, and my friends an I claim a table in the back, drink coffee, exchange sarcastic thoughts. Really, this place is another home. It's changed a bit, but I hold that it's the best coffee shop Cookeville has to its name. The staff are friendly and get to know you after a few visits. The coffee is unmatched as far as flavor goes, at least in this city. Some Wednesdays it's packed, others it's perfectly quiet. It appears to be a haunt for college students and, as in my case, artist-types. So, if you're anything like myself, you'll find this place to be heaven. They've also diversified into food a little bit, and you can get a Magic Cheese bagel which--I'm told--is spectacular. Salads are usually kept on hand in the cooler. They also have some gluten-free baked-goods on the counter, for those of us intolerant of wheat. It should also be mentioned that, besides regular milk, they offer soy and almond milk. Again, for the allergic souls. Overall, this is the best coffee shop Cookeville has on hand. TL;DR, If you have a chance and a penchant for coffee, you should most definitely pay Poet's a visit. You won't be sorry.

Legit coffee and great ambiance. There's lots of room to sit: tables, couches & comfy chairs, window bar that looks out to the street, and a chill hidden back room that would be great for studying. We were on our way home on I-40 W, but this was well worth the 7-minute detour!

It's all about the atmosphere in this place. College students and art crowd, good coffee, but great deserts.

I first visited Poet's ten years ago when I was in high school, well before the days of iPhones and Yelp. I loved it then, and I was surprised to know Cookeville had such a tiny pocket of culture. We were back in town visiting family this weekend, and I was thrilled to see that Poet's is still thriving. In fact, much of historic downtown Cookeville is booming! Great to see. As for this indie Bohemian chic coffee shop, they offer yummy nosh, gourmet coffee/tea and an open mic night that attracted young, talented acts from the nearby university. Stop in and sip or get a cup to go; either way, you'll support small business that deserves to keep on hanging on!

BJRC beans. I like the wall covered in wood. Friendly people at the counter. Cookies are ok, not my fav.

They offer almond milk for your drink. I got a latte, which is fantastic. Why don't more places do this!?

I absolutely love this place. If I could own a cafe, this would be it! I love the back room! So relaxing and the built-ins are beautiful. The baristas were so nice and they give great suggestions. There's also a great selection of jewelry in the front which was unexpected. You should check it out for sure!

My go-to java shop in Cookeville. Comfortable, easy atmosphere, and decent selection of drinks and eats. I feel like I could stay there for an extended period and not feel pressured to make a purchase or leave.

This is one of the Hippest parts of this town. The coffee is really good and they hand make it. Slow though as others have mentioned. I think the crowd depends on when you get here. I was here wednesday @ 6 pm and this place was packed. There was a huge line. I just moved here to Cookeville, from Houston, TX and was expecting something very small. This one rivals the best coffee shops in Houston or even Dallas. Needless to say that I will be comming back here and often. As a date place....hmmm... in the history of dating, I dont think any one has ever gotten thier first kiss in a coffee shop and so I dont do coffee shops. But in a small town like Cookeville... I might have a change of heart. :)

Ohh~ Being a college student living in Cookeville who eventually gets tired of stopping by Starbucks, this was a breath of fresh air. For one, it's bigger inside than it looks from the outside. And you can buy some little unique jewelry. I look forward to buying a necklace-box-moose some day. I had some white chocolate cloud deliciousness and a really yummy quiche. A bit overpriced for the size. But the taste was worth it. :) Music playing, art on the walls that made me feel like a critic. I will go back.

After a great dinner with my parents at Crawdaddy's, we wanted to visit some more, so we went to Poets. Good coffee, a fresh baked chocolate chunk cappuccino muffin, and my 8 year old almost beat his Grandpoppy at chess (the chess board pulled from a shelf stocked with several games).

Hip. Great place to be seen in town. Located at the town square. Coffee very good. Drinks made to order, so it can be a bit slow. Desserts not the freshest looking.

Poets on the square... If your new in town or just passing through, stop by for a spell. Perfect in fall, winter nights with bouncing head lights, coffee in the air, spring or summer tea to beat the heat. You'll love it , if you don't you should.

I live in Nashville and I've never been to Cookeville. So first time at Poet's Coffee tonight obviously. I came for a show and when I heard it was at a coffee shop, I thought it would be a little weird. But I gotta support my friends so I didn't let that stop me from making the trip. To my surprise, it was actually a super cool little spot and ended up being great for a show. Great turn out. Cool people. While we were waiting for the show to start, I got a coffee and a chicken salad croissant. Both delicious! The staff was also super sweet. Bonus - they had some cute jewelry, prints, records, etc. for sale. I would definitely drive there for another show and croissant!

The coffee was good, but when I go to a coffee shop, I want a cozy atmosphere. Poet's looked like they tried to accomplish this, but stopped short.

You can count on a great cup of coffee at Poets. The environment is what you expect of a good coffee shop - knowledgable baristas, a bit dark/funky, wifi access, paintings by local artist, roomy, comfy furniture and a pleasant place to hang out. Very good location. It would be great if had more baked goods to offer.

You know, you got your coffees and lattes and alternative rock playing. You know, you got your basic art hanging on the walls, and college students reading their, you know, philosophy books and stuff... You got the non-chalant, punk rock barista... You know... the flyers for music events all over the wall... It's like... you know... your basic cafe. Seeing as how it's right next to the Cookeville Republican Center (with a mural of Ronald Reagan painted on the parking lot wall), it's a pretty good counterbalance to Cookeville.

I had a great first experience at Poet's on May 13, 2012. I was visiting Cookeville to treat my Mother to lunch and spend a day in Cookeville. I stumbled upon Poet's and really glad I did. I had the best Cappucino I have had in a long long time. The atmosphere was cozy and warm. It was an acutal coffee house experience. The guy working the counter was great and was very knowledable about coffee/brews. I live in Nashville and we have nothing like Poet's. Maybe in the future there will be a Poet's 2 in Nashville... I will definately make the drive just to hang out there one weekend. Thank you!

My parents live in Cookeville, and whenever I visit, I try to make it a point to go to Poet's. I've lived in or visited much bigger cities that don't know how to pull off ambience in an independent coffeeshop. I am not really rating the coffee (which is great) but more the relaxing, cozy atmosphere that is sorely lacking in many small businesses. I used to really love it when the bookstore was open next door, but the Market is really cute as well.

nice little in town coffee shop. seems to be used by the local students more than anything else. limited offering for a sandwich but chicken salad and tuna croissant were very tasty. coffee drinks comparable to a local coffeehouse. service limited but adequate for client flow.

I enjoyed the small town feel of Poets, but of course I was in a small town so that was kind of a given. It did however, seem that everyone else preferred the Starbucks as I was only about one of five patrons whereas the Starbucks across town was completely packed. So the plus: a nice change of pace compared to the restaurant row where Starbucks is located and a quite place for a meeting. The minus: a coffee house devoid of atmosphere.
