Being in the Bible belt is sort of ironic. Most of the towns are little towns that you expect to serve breakfast at 6AM everyday...however, it appears that since Sunday is the church day and nothing more, nothing is open. Luckily, I passed by West Family Restaurant and was surprised to see it pretty lively. This is your standard family diner, but the service is exceptional, and the food is affordable, generously portioned, and appetizing. The menu is fairly limited, but I had my best breakfast in South Carolina here, and I am not even a breakfast eater! I had myself quite the hefty breakfast: a biscuit, a large slice of country ham with red-eye gravy, homefries, 2 eggs--over easy, sausage gravy, and a hotcake. Working backwards: the hotcake was lighter and more airy than your average pancake. It had a nutty flavor. The biscuit was the ideal biscuit: tender, moist, flaky, buttery. The egg yolks were rich and runny. The huge piece of country ham was tough, but salty, as it should be. The red-eye gravy was hearty and manly-tasting. And the sausage gravy was milky, creamy, and thick. The homefries were somewhat soft, but I liked the slightly raw onions mixed in. If you find yourself in this crazy bible strip near Greenville (183/Farrs Bridge), this is a great pre- or post- church Sunday meal. I assume all of you in this area will probably be going for religious purposes! Have a great meal.

This is your basic family restaurant, open Monday through Friday for breakfast-lunch-dinner, Saturday breakfast, Sunday breakfast-lunch. Weekdays you can get a meat-and-three with tea for $5.35. The decor is nothing special, but the food is consistently good. The menu includes entrees such as fried chicken, turkey and dressing, chicken fried steak. Numerous veggie choices include the usual beans, broccoli, salad, potatoes. I generally go for the fried chicken, mac and cheese, vegetable soup and fried okra. You can count peach cobbler or banana pudding as a vegetable. Good food, good price.
