I have to say this place is just fantastic to go to after a day at the beach and get some Clamcakes and Chowder! They have a back patio space that's full of tables so there's never a problem for seating. The wait time is only about 5 minutes for food which is very nice especially when you are starving and craving those delicious Clamcakes! My mouth is watering for some more at this very moment.

Delicious stop slightly away from the main public beach area. Parking, like in the whole area, is a nightmare. The restaurant has a few parking spaces out front, good luck. There is extensive outdoor and good indoor seating. One bathroom - not ideal. The window service is quick, as long as the people in front of you can narrow down the delicious choices. Whole belly clams and lobster roll were both really solid. Not the best I've sampled, and the overall atmosphere (next to the road, not QUITE on the water) were GOOD, not great. Overall, I definitely recommend Monahan's over any of the other choices in the immediate vicinity. We didn't try it, but they seem to have a good ice cream selection in the summer, too.

Nice little seafood shack on the main drag before the beach. The food is good not great but not average either. The clam cakes can be big sometimes to big I think at times. Making them to doughy at times but hey at least u get clams in them right Lol. Service is decent and moves right along. Parking can be tough and hard to find. Have a little side patio to take in the view.

Their scallop role was great!! Our friend got hot lobster roll which was amazing. Their clam strips and clam cakes are meh. However, couple of my buddies got Caribbean fish sandwich and they really liked it. I really like their almond and coconut ice cream. Great location!! Good Service!!

awesome lobster rolls, scallop rolls, whole belly clams awesome too.

I love that they serve fist size clam cakes that actually have clams in them! Sometimes in these parts, that is hard to find! Also, really great lobster bisque, great chowder, fried whole belly clams and raw bar! Right at the end of "the wall" in Narragansett, if you dont know what that means....well I will just keep the next bit to myself.... Check it out, run by a super cool family who have been in the biz forever, qick efficiant, friendly, and GOOD!

Listen, if you need a quick fresh seafood fix, then this place is okay, but it's by no means the best that RI has to offer. Lobster rolls will cost you either $14.99 or $15.99 (I can't seem to remember), and although they give you a good chunk of meat, it's sort of flavorless. It's fresh, but flavorless even with all the lemon juice I could squeeze out of the wedge from which they provided. Their clam cakes are pretty good, although pretty standard for any clam cake you'd find in the area - greasy, fried balls of carby deliciousness with the occasional clam bits. They sell fountain drinks, but they direct you to a vending machine next to the window for bottles of water. Ice cream can be found in the back of the store. There is a single unisex bathroom and the place has no air conditioning... not that you'd need it, but just fair warning for what to expect. It's right on the water with beautiful views so expect to sweat a bit if there's no breeze and the sun is shining.

We stopped for lunch on a nice April afternoon. The service was nice and friendly, offering samples of the fresh clam chowder and lobster bisque. We ordered our food and stepped outside grabbing a seat at the ocean's edge. Without further ado: clam chowder: great! clam cakes: very nice tuna tacos: awesome fish and chips: very good! Would definitely return!

What a nice place by the sea. The service was great and the setting even better. I had the ahi tuna tacos, which had a mango salsa and a light sauce. The fresh fish sandwich made with flounder had a light breading and was cooked perfectly. The burgers looked good...the kids said that they're the best burgers on the beach. We're definitely going back!

Stumbled on Monahan's while lost, tired and grumpy. This place turned my day around. Nothing like a basket of Whole Belly clams and an ice tea overlooking the ocean under the shade of an umbrella to make everything better. Service was efficient and got though the eager line of folks quickly.

My first clam cake experience - and it did not disappoint ! Great water front shack atmosphere. The service was quick and the people were friendly. Great start to a RI vacation !

We arrived at a busy dinner hour during the week. There were lines but it moved fairly quickly. I ordered New England style clam chowder which was excellent. I also ordered one of "Rhode Island's Best Lobster Rolls." Sorry to say, hugely disappointing because it was NOT fresh lobster meat. As a native New Englander, I say why bother. The waitress insisted that all their lobster meat was fresh. Fresh frozen maybe, but definitely not fresh. It came mixed with an unheard of dry herbal concoction doing its best to disguise what you were trying to eat. After a bit of a fuss, they returned my money. Sad I had to return to California without having the real deal. A few years ago I had a fish sandwich there which was great. The place was a tiny shack at that point. Maybe bigger is not better but they have a great location going for them, I'll say that much.

Good local Walk-up stand for all the fried Seafood staples. Food is good and reasonably priced, Gets crowded at dinnertime but you can call ahead, They've expanded their outdoor seating with a view of the ocean. A local institution!

Being from out of town, we expected the typical greasy crab shack. What a pleasant surprise. While not exactly cheap, they prepare both grilled and fried shellfish to be tasty and not greasy at all. It was undergoing renovations during our visit, and the proprietors were very concerned that we had a good experience, which we did. Great views as well. Any visit to this area should include one or more trips to Monahan's.

Love the new oyster/lobster bar in the back, so beautiful!! Best Lobster roll in RI - period!

As a native Rhode Islander, i may get in trouble for saying this. I've had Aunt Carries and I've had Iggy's and i can honestly say that Monahan's is just as good, if not better. I love getting clam cakes and chowder after a day at the beach and i feel like the location is perfect. There is usually a line if you are there on a weekend or holiday, but it moves fast and the wait for your food isn't too long. The white chowder is CREAMY (non of that "milk chowder" crap) and the clam cakes are HUGE! The prices are good, they take credit cards, and they have picnic tables next to the building. The only issue might be parking, but i always manage to find a spot.

Nice views and pretty good food. I had a cheeseburger and three clam cakes. The cheeseburger was cooked just right. The clam cakes had a nice even flavor. Not too salty not too dry. I would eat here again.

I have only eaten at Monahan's once and had the fish and chips which was pretty good, nothing spectacular, just good solid fair. Behind the restaurant is a small fishing pier with parking and it has a beautiful view of Narragansett Bay. I would recommend this place for fried food and a place to linger and catch the ocean view.

Clam cakes. Chowder. Fish & chips. Lobster rolls. All of it is so good. This is an awesome spot to get some great seafood after a day on the beach. Fair prices. Great ocean views. Quick service. Can't go wrong going here. Haven't tried the new oyster and lobster bar, which is behind the line and somewhat hidden but it's got a really cool vibe in there. Definitely checking it out this year!

Always Great! At the end of the wall, it's a must visit when in Narragansett. The ice cream is one of the best around.

Went to Monahan's for the first time today. I'm not sure how many years it's been Monahan's, but it seems like a while. I'm pretty sure it was an ice cream place when I was a kid. I had a bowl of Rhode Island (clear clam chowder to out of state folks) and a quarter dozen....that's 3 clam cakes to the same out of state crowd. The girl at the counter was very friendly, despite being in a hot box on another sauna-like day here in the biggest little state. The chowder was pretty good. The broth was tasty without being overly salty and it was packed to the top with potatoes and clams. There were probably too many potatoes for purists, but the fact that the clams were bountiful made that okay. It was nice to get a bowl that was actually packed with ingredients instead of 1/2 broth. The clamcakes were okay. They were cooked perfectly and had at least a few small clam bits in each. I did find then to be slightly under spiced, which was fine since I just added some pepper to each bite. They were also a little thick/heavy - which isn't out of the norm for a clamcake and is also a huge part of the reason why one shouldn't eat too many or have them very often. All in all my first experience at Monahan's was very nice. The tables outside, in the shade were perfect for the cuisine. Monahan's is a solid destination for the very traditional RI summer, clamcake and chowder meal. If I explore the menu any deeper in the future - I will be sure to update.

My boyfriend and I went to Monahan's for the first time last night. I will say that I am a Narragansett resident and die hard Iggy's fan, but the lobster roll was amazing!! For around $15 you can get a hot (with butter) or cold (with mayonnaise) lobster roll. We got one of each. They were both well seasoned with fresh herbs in the mix. The average lobster meat and mayo kind of roll does not really do it for me, but these lobster rolls were filled with fresh flavor. The clam cakes and chowder on the other hand were good but no Iggy's. We will be back for the lobster rolls!

Excellent place for a quick bite. The lobster roll and fried shrimp were delicious. Definitely going to come back!

Seriously delicious! Every summer we look forward to our once a week stop at Monahans. Lobster rolls were always my go to until I got a recommendation from the owner to try the fish tacos...sooo good! If you are in the area Monahans is a must!

  • Matt C.

The food here is quite good, however, the service is very disappointing. Three times in the last month I had called in orders consisting of a couple of bowls of chowder only. Each time I would wait 5-10 minutes before picking up my order and I would still end up waiting at least another 5+ mins before receiving my order. I'm no expert when it comes to chowder, but I know it doesn't take more than 30 seconds to pour chowder into a few containers. Step it up

Hot lobster roll: mostly meat, very little mayo; tuna taco: flavorful sauce, tuna fresh and scrumptious (not overcooked); crab cake: no filler, quite tasty; delicious, crispy fries; very yummy scallops. Fair prices, great service, incredible view. Far superior to typical New England clam shacks.

  • Nick H.

Clean, reasonably priced seafood shop with a great view of the bay. Excellent $15 lobster roll. Not choked with mayo. Lots of herbs & flavor folded into the dressing. The bun stood up to the heaping pile of lobster meat. Someone took the time to butter it and grill it properly. The french fries were super tasty. Oysters were fresh and shucked with care. $10 for a half doz oysters is slightly overpriced, but the quality was on point. Will return when in the area.

The location of this place was amazing. The view from the outside seating adds to the experience. The whole belly clams were wonderful. Very nice favors and not greasy at all. The white clam chowder is up there with some of the best I've had. Loaded with clams and the perfect mix of spices. The service was very quick and the wait to order was about 10:00 minutes. A few non seafood lovers had the chicken tenders and said they were delicious and extremely filling.

  • Meghan M.

One of the BEST lobster rolls around! If you're looking for chowder and clamcakes, this is the place to go. They do such a great job making a hearty chowder. It's not filled with just potatoes and broth, you can actually taste flavor as well as clams. Huge fan, and one of the best views on the East Coast!

Love Monahan's! Lobster rolls (hot and cold) are delicious and reasonably priced. Fried scallops are fresh and perfectly cooked. My favorite clam shack by far.

Well, we were told by a local that this was the place to go... So we trusted the stranger and ventured over. We were merely going for a snack, so we got 3 clam cakes and a bowl of red chowder. I guess I shouldn't say much since I had never even heard of a clam cake.... But it was literally a big ball of fried dough with barely a clam in sight. The red chowder was pretty good, very hot and too many potatoes. I suppose I can't give a fair judgement since I didn't try an entree or anything, but I wasn't pleased. Also, our total was $7.54. We gave the cashier $10.55 and she didn't know how much change to give us off the top of her head. Like come on

Good lobster roll. Fresh chunks of meat, a little butter, excellent. The new england clam chowder was good, creamy with large pieces of clam in it. They have a great eating area outside and even bring the food to your table. You can look at the beach/ocean while enjoying your lunch. Parking lot is a bit tight, but usually plenty available on the street.

    (4)
  • Jenn S.

White clam chowder was very good, nice and thick with chunks of potatoes and clams... The lobster roll here needs help though...lacked flavor and roll to lobster meat ratio was pathetic... Still service was very nice and fast.

  • George K.

The only reason I did not give Monahans five stars is the clam chowder lacked clams. Other than that one issue, the meal was perfect. The cold and hot lobster rolls were delicious, The cold lobster roll did seem to have bigger chunks of lobster. The fried fish was perfect. Lightly breaded and very crispy.

If you are looking for classic beach food with nice outdoor seating and an ocean view this place is perfect. I ordered the lobster roll as well as my wife, the kids ordered burgers and fries. Everything tasted fresh, will return when in the area. I also should add there is a restroom, it was nice and clean which I personally find to be a huge plus for any restaurant

Ive eaten a lot of seafood in Rhode island and Monahan's is by far the best. The lobster is delicious and the service is phenomenal. Plus, who could forget the ocean view!

Don't waste your time and money for foods from both pavilions in Narragansett Beach. They are overpriced and you'd have to put up with "emo infused" over dramatic verbal exchange by teenagers while you wait in the queue. Don't give up your parking spot. Just keep on walking to create more room in your stomach and to burn off the calories on the way back. Monahan's offers pretty solidly tasty seafood that made us go twice in one day. For lunch, we had lobster roll and fish 'n chips. Lobster roll was top notch and I really enjoyed battered "what may have been" flounder of fish 'n chips. Being under the sun and grappling 9ft wave all afternoon critically lowered my "tekken" like energy level. We were in desperate need of refuel. Hence we went back to Monahan's. We've got clam strips and clam bake. Often many places cheat clam trips with over-breading, but Monahan's didn't. They've got a lot of meat in it. For clam cake, I wasn't too impressed. But it was hard to say as I haven't really eaten clam cake, therefore my pallet isn't really good to judge it. Anyhow, this is now a "must stop by" spot in Narragansett.

A place to sea while you eat Monahan's is a little take out restaurant located right on Narragansett Bay. No place to sit inside but there are a few picnic tables outside where you can eat you food and enjoy beautiful views of the water. They have the usual fried seafood, chowda, calm cakes and burgers. Nothing gourmet here but still pretty good for take out. They also have a window for smoothies, sundaes and ice cream type things. Definitely not the best seafood restaurant around but a pleasant place to stop and have a snack while going through Narragansett. The food is pretty good and the views are fantastic.

During our stay in Rhode Island, my wife and I decided to try Monahan's based on all the good Yelp reviews. We weren't disappointed. Monahan's is a small seafood shack right on the shore. It's not meant to be a fancy sit down and have dinner type place. You order at the window, pay and they bring the food out to your table. Couldn't be more simple. Parking can be a challenge though as the lot is quite small. I ordered a hot buttered lobster roll and my wife had the cold mayo lobster roll. Both came out packed with lobster meat. Although the hot buttered lobster roll was good, there was way too much butter (yes, I did say that!) on it that made the bottom of the roll completely wet and soggy. Other than that it was a decent lobster roll. I tried my wife's cold lobster roll and I actually thought it tasted better than the hot one. There was more lobster flavor in it and very little mayonnaise to get in the way. We also tried the ahi tuna wraps, which were clean tasting and delicious! I'd definitely go back for those! All in all, Monahan's was pretty decent.

We had a good meal here on our last trip to the area. We came with a larger group that included children, so we came a bit early to get a table. It's easier to have some of the group grab a table, while the others visit the window to order. Once you order, a runner will bring your food out to the table. Service was fairly quick from order to delivery. We opted to BYOB. Many of he items are fried, so be mindful of that. But it's vacation, so why worry? We thought it was a bit pricy for what it was. The portions were good sized. But what you paid for ordering at a window seemed a little high. The food was good overall. Overall, a great place to visit. You'll get a good meal right by the water.

Dropped by for take out on a gorgeous summer evening. My plan to walk down to the ocean wall to sit & eat was genius if I may say so! The line to order, standing in the parking lot gave me ample time to decide what to eat. At the window a sign tells you the way your order should be placed to make it a smooth process. The wait for the food about 10 - 15 minutes. I was standing off to the side of the restaurant after walking down to the ocean when I heard my name being called by a quick moving young person carrying my order! Basically I was chasing down my food as this young person starts to loop around again calling my name, fun times. Situated on the ocean wall as I watched the waves, I opened my styrofoam box revealing a medium sized filled warm lobster roll - the restaurant claims to be the best lobster roll (doesn't all seafood restaurants in RI?) the lobster was room temp to warm mixed with a tad of butter & a green leaf of lettuce wilted underneath all nestled on a roll with a soggy bottom. I ate the yummy lobster mostly with my fork & the sides of the roll. I am sure it's not the best but it was decent & it was offered without mayo for once! I also snacked on a clam cake for comparison to others in the area, my take is too bready & not enough clams, size is right on & cooked perfectly. I will go again to try the chowder because I'm a chowda head at heart!

Now, I am a true Rhode Islander, born and bred.. and clam cakes and chowder.. are about as serious as it gets in this anchor brandishing, smallest state in the union. Now you'll hear people talk about Aunt Carries.. and thats all well and good if you want a bowl of milk that a clam once fell into by mistake (there poor excuse for white chowder) and tasteless batter balls. Then there is Iggy's which does a little better if you like a bowl of wall paper paste that a clam fell into once.. and batter balls that a clam got lost and fell into.. but I don't like either any of those things... that is why I got to Monahan's. The white chowder (the only chowder worth eating in my book) is perfect. Nice thickness, lots of clam and potato.. good seasoning and just enough pepper. Wicked f@#ing good man. And then there are the clam cakes.. light and not too greasy, with a good amount of clam and some seasoning... why is it so hard for people to understand.. season your damn food.. it doesn't matter if it came out of a fryer or not.. of if thats the way the batter mix came.. taste it and season it. Geez. Anyways.. these guys sure are doing it right and have been for years, and there is no better way to eat Monahan's tasty food than out on their patio overlooking beautiful Narragansett Bay, with the seawall and the Towers in the distance.. their food is literally that view.. simmered and seasoned for a while and served up in a tasty brown bag and styrofoam cup. Keep up the good work Matty and Co.

This is what Narragansett is about, excellent, fast, and extremely delicious food all while enjoying the view! The chowder is perfect the clam cakes are perfect, hell even the chicken fingers are perfect. You can't go wrong with this place, and the best part is that the line isn't as long as Aunt Carries or Iggys. Go here to enjoy the outside view and some great food, you'll thank me later.

5 stars for the hot buttered lobster roll! We went for the clam cakes and they were good but didn't seem to be any clams in them. Great place though. One of the best lobster rolls I've had. Will definitely go back. Perfect ocean setting while enjoy good seafood.

Hubby and two kids ate here prior to fishing off the nearby pier. Nice, creamy clam chowder and good fried fish. My son had a crab cake sandwich that was surprisingly good too. "Caribbean Fish Sandwich" special was fried fish on a bun with an odd salsa. We thought it might be grilled, but never assume here as fried is simply the only way to get seafood around here. We will be going back.

This place saved me a few days ago on a long, cold bike ride that I wasn't really dressed for. I got their clear broth chowda, and I must say that it was one of the best clear chowdas I've ever eaten. Lots of clams and potatoes and the broth had the right measure of clam flavoring. But what sets Monahan's clear chowda apart from others I've tried is the fact that whoever is making it, is not afraid to boost up the broth with copious amounts of Black Pepper, which any clear chowda aficionado will tell you, is the key to great clam broth. This is my first experience with this clam shack, and after visiting again, I will probably up my rating if that experience is as good as this one was.

Great food with a incredible view!! Everything is good in the menu! I've tried everything and I have 4 favs lol, the lobster roll (perfectly seasoned and not overly mayo-ed), whole clam roll, scallop roll and the clam cakes! Yummy!

  • Cynthia R.

Red chowder served so blazing hot - after 5 minutes of letting it sit and stirring it, I went to take a bite and had to spit it out as it burnt my entire mouth- to the point where I couldn't eat the rest of my meal. The top of my mouth was raw and my tongue literally singed. It took days for anything to taste right again. I know soup should be hot but I'm guessing I got the bottom-of-the-pan serving that was over-heated. Completely ruined my entire experience with Monahan's and resulted in a painful rest of the day at the beach. :(

This is a great spot right on the Narragansett pier. It's not my favorite shack in RI, but it's definitely good in a pinch. They offer all 3 clam chowder styles (white, clear and red) I, like any self respecting chowder eater, went with the white. It is a damn good chowder. I also had a clam roll which was little disappointing. It was supposed to be a whole belly roll but had far more strips in it than whole clams. But they were damn tasty clams. It should also be mentioned that the prices seemed to be a bit cheaper than what you would spend at some other shacks. The clam roll was $9 and I usually expect to pay closer to $15. I honestly would have preferred to spend the little extra and had more bellies in my roll, but thats just me.

This place has an excellent location and a view that cannot be replicated. You look out over the ocean and see tankers, sailboats and pleasure cruisers enter the Narragansett Bay. You can see The Wall, Ocean Road from South Pier Road all the way to The Tower and the Coast Guard House Restaurant. It's relaxing and gets a beautiful breeze. A wonderful place to unwind on a hot sunny day. I come here with friends when I can't stand to be inside and when it's not crowded. That's one of the greatest points about it. No inside dining so you can see who is there and how many people are there. Of course like all outside dining it's weather reliant. They do have a large awning to keep the drizzle off or the glaring sun. The tables have umbrellas and tablecloths. Condiments are on the tables with napkins. If you're wearing a bikini you can eat here. Have no shoes? No problem. Come as you are. This shack has always been a seafood shack and prone to owner and managerial changes. I've been here when it's been your basic grease hut but in 2010 it was very presentable and organized. The fish was breaded instead of batter fried and every time I had it in fish and chips the portions were good sized and the fish was not greasy. The burgers are also not too bad for a seafood takeout place. I like their clam cakes. They are also not greasy and large. Crispy outside and a lighter texture inside, a reasonable amount of clams make for a really decent cake. I typically like the sinkers though, when the texture is heavy in a clam cake but a cake that has a good amount of clams in it is the best. Paper bags blot extra oil. They have a separate window for ice cream and drinks which helps crowd control. Sometimes they had specials . They'd a sandwich board outside the store front. Walk off your meal afterwards along The Wall. You can park for free on The Wall but good luck during tourist season! Still sometimes you can find a parking place along Boon Street. I think they have bathrooms for customers but when I go to takeout places I usually assume there are none and prepare myself for that.

A cute little mom and pop spot- decent food-burgers, clam cakes, chowder and fish. Nothing fantastic but the water views were sensational. You can see Beavertail and Whale Rock.

Good food, good prices, GREAT view. You place your order and they bring it out to you. Parking was tough as the lot is TINY. We had the clam roll, (tender, not overbreaded, lobster roll...it was warm, which was a surprise..., shrimp and fish sandwich. Everyone was pleased with their food. You can walk down to the water from a little path. Seating area has umbrella shades.

We came here after a beach visit. Going to the beach tends to make me crave seafood. And it makes me hungry. I looked over at my fiancee and said "Let's be fat. Get everything we want." I got the clear broth chowder, clam cakes, lobster roll and clam strip platter. We split everything, and it was all completely delicious. Perfectly cooked and fresh. The clam cakes were the best I've ever had. The broth on the chowder was soooo delicious. We finished it all off with some ice cream, and then went back home and unbuttoned our pants like Al Bundy. This place is needs a repeat visit before the season is over...

Went here while taking a little vacation to Narragansett and didn't leave disappointed! Their clam cakes are great (a bit dense) but crispy and clammy! The tuna taco is wicked good but the tortilla for me was too much. The tuna is so good as is the slaw with it in the tort but maybe smaller sized tortillas, just a thought. So delicious and the price is right! Being in a tourist area it's sometimes hard to find places worth the money, but this place is a good after beach go to!

After a day at the beach I get a hankering for some fried seafood, but I'm not crazy about a lot of the other places in the area. This past week we decided to give Monahan's a try, there is always a line when I drive by so I figured it couldn't be bad. Depending on the time of day parking can be a little bit of a challenge, we ended up a little ways down the road but the weather was perfect for a short stroll. There was a line already when we arrived but it moved pretty quickly. I had the fish & chips which were a good size serving for the price, for about $11 I got 3 decent size fillets, fries, coleslaw, and plenty of tartar sauce (I always ask for extra to dip my fries in. . . don't judge). They use flounder which was good, but I prefer a thicker fish like cod or haddock. Also their batter is thinner then I personally like but it was very well seasoned. The hubster went with 3 clam cakes and a bowl of chowder, he was worried that 3 wouldn't be enough but later was happy because they were large clam cakes. He also commented on the large pieces of clam that were in his chowder, he seemed very happy with his meal. What also helped make this place great was the view, you can't beat eating seafood right on the water. It was very casual and it was so relaxing to eat watching over the bay and as the sun started to set the lights of Jamestown & Newport started to twinkle. Even though we were only an hour away from home for a few hours, I felt like I was on vacation. So while the food didn't blow be away, it was much better then the other 4 places in the area I've been to and was a much better value. Certainly will keep Monahan's in mind the next time I need a post-beach meal.

Out of all the places I've been to in Rhode Island, Monahan's has quickly become the icon of Rhode Island beach eats to me. It's a little clam shake by the side of the sea at the way far end of Narraganett town beach. You roll in, place your order at the window and seat yourself. They'll call your name and bring your order out when it's ready. This was the first place where I had a phenomenal lobster roll that I thought: "Yes. Yes! THIS is a lobster roll worth writing home about." Let me tell you about their lobster roll. It's a quarter pound of nothing but lobster on a hot-dog like bun that's been properly toasted. Whether you get their hot butter drawn roll or a cold mayo glazed roll, the quality is amazing. It doesn't just stop at lobster rolls though. Their whole belly clam roll and oyster po'boy is also quality. Well, one lobster roll isn't going to fill you up though (I think, either that or I'm a little on the gluttonous side, probably that). This is where their chowder and clam cakes come in. Hands down, the best chowder and clam cakes during my stay in Rhode Island this summer, and don't worry, I made sure to try both as often as possible. But yes, make your way to Narragansett beach and then come here for your meal afterwards! You won't regret it.

Monahan's was an awesome choice for gorging on RI-specific food. I loved it. We got a large to-go order, which meant I got to sample lots of choices. Everything was I was blown away by the fried clams w/bellies. So flavorful and cooked ideally. These tasted like the essence of the ocean. And also fried deliciousness. I'm not sure when I might have had better (maybe never), these were top notch. Clamcakes were great. These were light and fluffy, good chunks of clam. And very good flavor. Both the clear and white chowders were very, very good. Both had lots of chunks of potato (but fortunately many clams). The white chowder was extremely thick.

Also amazing lobster rolls served here. They give you a choice of hot or cold. Whereas the cold is usually defaulted on, the hot one did impress equally as well. Great outdoor seating next to the beach too. A must hit-up spot when in Rhode Island.

I love a classic New England "Clam Shack" and boy does Monahan's deliver! We liked it so much that we went two days in a row over the 4th of July weekend! Everything was delicious. In particular, the Lobster Roll (huge!) and Ahi Tuna Tacos (fresh mango!) were standouts. We also had the Fried Clam (with Bellies) Roll which was super fresh and really delivered that "ocean" flavor. The clam strips were ok, but we thought the weak flavor suggested that they were frozen (as opposed to the clams with bellies). "White" (New England Style) clam chowder, french fries, onion rings and cole slaw were also all great. We topped it all off with a small soft serve ice cream cone with Jimmies - and then headed to the beach for a nap!!

Love the clamcakes and chowder, definitely far better than other choices in south county. I dislike the parking but if you have soemone drop you off and drive around the block it isn't too bad. Also recommend going at off peak times and heating up the chowder if you have that option!

Perfect spot in Narragansett for a quick lunch. Right on the water, the food is very good. Ice cream bar in the back along with outdoor & indoor seating. Food is brought to the tables. Unlike many establishments in Narragansett, they accept visa/MasterCard. Would have been great if they had a bar but I don't want to be picky. The staff is nice and accommodating. Only one bathroom but it was very clean. Parking is limited. Take a walk on the dock after you eat. I recommend Monahan's for a perfect beach lunch or casual supper.

This placed has been transformed from a greasy-spoon to one of the hippest places to eat in the pier area. Their Tuna Tacos are amazing but if you're in the mood for something fried, their fried oysters are great. You can't go wrong with the food, the views and the quick service. It is a must if you are in the Gansett Pier.

A very good Narragansett casual mollusk place. It's known for its lobster rolls. I didn't get those, so I will leave that to others. Here is what I had: Chowder. I've had better. It is very thick and generous, but I don't like the skin on the potatoes. For some reason, a totally naked white potato goes better. Clam cakes. Very good. Tennis ball sized. Not over or under cooked. Generous clams. Spot on. Flash fried sea scallops. Got these on high recommendation. Was excellent. Huge scallops. Not a lot of breading at all. Perfect. Ice cream. They have a parlor next door. It was good. Like the chowder, it's very good but not unlike other good ice cream I've had in Newport. Parking is pretty slim on the property itself, but we found pretty close parking on Ocean Drive. Is this the inheritor to the much maligned "new generation" Aunt Carrie's? In some respects, yes. But I'm still looking.

Coconut Shrimp, Clam Strips, Clam Cakes, Fish Taco's, and Clam Chowder have never tasted so good from a small time summer-shack seaside place. Their prices may seam a little bit high, but Monahan's delivers. This restaurant is not fine dining, and you will not find any white linen table clothes out on their picnic benches, but this family friendly summertime destination does seafood right. If you are in the Narragansett area and looking for good seafood, Monahan's is a must.

Made a quick stop in here on a Saturday for some clam cakes and chowder. HOLY CLAMCAKES BATMAN! So big! Normally you get more batter than you do clams but this was the other way around. The way clam cakes should be! They are located right at the end of the wall in Narragansett, parking can be a little annoying. They have a small parking lot but I'm sure with a little searching you can find a spot along the wall. They have all your usual food items that you could get at a local seafood spot right on the water, including ice cream! If I'm in the area I'm definitely stopping again!

Classic clam shack. We had fish and chips, clam roll, clear chowder and clam cakes. The food was great. We tipped it off with very good ice cream. This our go to place on the RI shore. The lobster rolls were big and tasty.

I enjoyed my food and atmosphere while on Rhode Island. I had never had clam chowder before and it was delightful! I had white clam chowder which was creamy and full flavor! I also had the clam cakes which were also pillows of flavor! The line was crazy long because the food is worth it! They did a great job keeping the line moving and serving the food fast! They also gave samples of the ice cream! I had the raspberry chocolate chip frozen yogurt!! De-luscious! I didn't take a picture of it though because I was to engrossed with eating it!! It was a great seaside experience:)

I came here during the 4th of July weekend so I'm not too sure if that's the reason why the line was about a 45+ min. wait, but I assume the food was worth the wait since all the other restaurants & shacks along the beach boardwalk wasn't as pack as Monahan's. When it was finally our turn to ordered, we got the Maryland's crab cakes, cold lobster roll (there's two options to choose hot or cold lobster roll), the fried clam strips and our friends got the clam cakes and the clam chowder. I thought the food was "fair" for the price itself. The Maryland's crab cake could've used a little more taste to it because I thought it tasted a little too plain for my flavor. The cold lobster roll was actually really good with the butter roll. Normally I like to eat my lobster roll two ways. One is eating the lobster itself and of course the other is with the roll, but the lobster roll here didn't really taste good without the butter roll. The clam cakes were delicious though and so did the clam chowder. It was so rich and creamy and they were definitely not cheap on the clams! The employees were extremely friendly and generous! Monahan's also serve ice cream in the back of their shack. I must say though, their ice cream are phenomenal!

I had the fried calamari today & they drizzle garlic aioli on it as opposed to what I'm used to, which is straight-up fried. Because of the aioli they were soggy with no crunch whatsoever. They weren't bad per say but if you're looking for crunch you best order simply fried w/nothing added.

Our favorite roadside seafood restaurant in the area. You can't get much better for this type of restaurant. The hot lobster rolls were excellent - big fresh chunks of lobster with just the right amount of butter. The scallops were perfect, large, not buried in breading, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Tuna tacos were full of fresh ingredients. Clam cakes and white chowder were great, we actually went back and got seconds. Clam cakes were not too heavy or greasy and the chowder was just the right consistency and flavoring (though the Clam Shack in Charlestown was our trip's favorite).

Love the new oyster/lobster bar in the back, so beautiful!! Best Lobster roll in RI - period!

Seriously delicious! Every summer we look forward to our once a week stop at Monahans. Lobster rolls were always my go to until I got a recommendation from the owner to try the fish tacos...sooo good! If you are in the area Monahans is a must!

Yummy!

Also amazing lobster rolls served here. They give you a choice of hot or cold. Whereas the cold is usually defaulted on, the hot one did impress equally as well. Great outdoor seating next to the beach too. A must hit-up spot when in Rhode Island.

  • Steve W.
