My family orders from this place a lot. I think it's safe to say I've tried just about everything on the menu. I've never had any complaints. We generally get delivery or pick up, pretty sure I've only actually eaten there once. I love all the pasta dishes---you can easily feed two adults and two children with one order---which is awesome if you are that person who forgets to pull supper out of the freezer. The salad is always fresh, and the BBQ chicken pizza is a favorite.

Best Pizza Place on the Island* (besides my own). The pizza is consistently good. It's always delivered piping hot and within the time frame quoted. The ingredients are fresh and a step above the other pizza places in town. The people answering the phone are nice and are super helpful if you have someone with a food allergy. Typically we order the pesto sweet sausage pizza and a house salad with Carmella's creamy balsamic dressing. The pizza is delicious. The salad comes with olives, carrots, cucumbers, banana peppers and is enough for at least three pizza-eaters to share. The dressing is fantastic. The consistency of the dressing is more similar to a vinaigrette than thicker dressings like ranch or blue cheese. It coats really well when you toss the salad. We often order an extra dressing. This way we have dressing to use on or vegetables or salad the following night. I recommend trying the bread strips with the marinara sauce. The seasoning is delicious. If you wanted to save some money, you can order garlic bread for a dollar. It is 8 or 12 inches of typical garlic bread, good but not anything special. Go for the bread strips. We have a wood-burning pizza oven in our backyard, but it takes between 2 to 4 hours to get hot so we usually use our oven when we have people over to eat. Sometimes we make our own dough, but we usually have a big crowd and cook up at least six pizzas so it is much easier just to buy dough. If we are going to buy dough for our pizza parties, we only use Carmella's. We learned that the hard way. We tried buying the dough from the pizza place on Aquidneck Ave near the Atlantic Beach Club, but Carmela's dough is superior and worth the longer drive. **My all-time favorite pizza places are Frank Pepe's (less than a mile away from my house when I lived in West Hartford) and Grimaldi's (near my parent's place in Texas).

Carmella's is a simple, no nonsense place for a nice dinner or pizza slice. The interior itself is not fancy, and the workers aren't the friendliest but the pizza sure is tasty. I recommend it if you are in the area. Good food at good prices.

It might be close to NY, but NO CIGAR! I got 2 slices of cheese pizza which was sub-par to say the least. It looked like it was a week old and to hide that fact, they sprinkled some mozzarella and marinara on top to hide the old cheese and evaporated and completely crust absorbed sauce. Have you ever cooked leftover cold pizza in the microwave? Well that was the consistency of the crust and cheese. No bueno.

I was very disappointed with the pizza .too wet, toppings constantly fall off crust. .

We ordered chicken Parmesan and pizza and both were very good. BYOB place which is always nice and they were very accommodating to our group with young kids. Recommend when you need some family Italian near Newport.

  • Michelle K.

I first noticed very little topping. My husband first noticed the layer of grease. I believe this is supposed to be New York style pizza with thin chewy crust (some would say cardboard like) and rubbery cheese. If that is your thing, then you will love this pizza. I on the other hand don't want to have to gnaw on my pizza.

We were staying at a nearby hotel, and this pizza place was nearby. We stopped to pick up some salad and pizza on our way to the Cliff Walk. Very pleased with both. Salad which included cucumber, carrots, peppers and olives was made of fresh ingredients. Pizza seemed made of equally fresh ingredients and was very tasty. A great find!

Ordered veggie pizza a couple of nights ago. There was no seasoning in the dough or sauce. The pizza arrived soggy and was flavorless and tasteless. We chose this establishment because it was rated high on YELP. Mistake; not everything is rated to reflect the quality and tastiness of an establishments products correctly on YELP. avoid this pizza place.

We are ordering pizza from Carmella's from here on out. We've ordered several times, all delivery. The pizza is soosoo good, BUT the calzones are to die for. If you're still ordering from chain stores you're crazy!

    (5)
  • Nancy C.

Oh heavenly goodness! It's the sauce! I had a slice for dinner two nights in a row. On my second night, I inquired about this sweet stuff. Plum tomatoes with nothing added. No oregano or parsley or sugar or salt. Ask for extra cheese. Extra cheese slice for less than 3 bucks! You guys rock!

  • Vegas K.

The pizza isn't bad, but it doesn't stand out either. Extremely average pizza place, which is not a knock on the joint. It'll do the trick if you are in a pizza mood, but it won't make a lasting memory, either.

Carmella's Middletown has my vote for the best pizza crust on Aquidneck Island! I frequently get take out and their quality has been consistently great over the last 7 years. Pizzas are made in their open kitchen right in front of you; the freshness of the ingredients is apparent and each dough is shaped by hand. The regular cheese pizza has the perfect sauce:cheese ratio with a crispy, chewy crust. They have a nice offering of special pies, along with pasta, sandwiches and salads. This place is family owned, and the love shows!

Best crust, BYOB, great value, nice staff, plenty of seating. Great local pizza joint.

I was looking for a pizza spot while in town and found this place. I called for pickup and was put on hold for 5 minutes then the call dropped. Called again and the girl on the other end had attitude. I figured they were busy since it was a weekday evening so I ordered anyhow. When I went to pick up the order the place was empty. Now for the food: I had the Prosciutto Popeye made as a calzone. WOW. It was amazing. Whole roasted garlic, broccoli and spinach with prosciotto. Damn. DAAYYUUMM! I know now why the locals love this place. I'll give blondie a pass for the phone BS. Maybe she was having an off day.

    (4)
  • Bobby M.

Contrary to a previous post of mine not at all close to their boasts of being as good as the real deal of NY! I ordered the "popeye watever"(yes it had real spinach), I told him extra crispy & wen I picked up a slice, well u no wat happens if it's soggy! Best part of it was the crunchy prosciutto topping! Maybe he thought I wanted the top extra crispy? Never again!

Carmella's is a little pricey but worth it. They have the best chicken caesar salad around and the portions are huge. It's more like two salads if you ask me, I can never finish it in one sitting. Their pizza is OK but their calzones are excellent. You can dine in, or take out and I believe they deliver although I've never called for delivery. Their house and chef salads are also ginormous and delish!

Amazing pizza!!! I was traveling to Newport for vacation, and stumbled upon this delight across from our hotel. The pizza was ready in 20 minutes, with thin crackly crust.. I had the pepperoni, and found this to be one of the best. (I'm from NYC, so I've tried a lot!) Enjoy and support this place. They will not let you down. (PS: order extra sauce; it's awesome.)

    (5)
  • Jon L.

House salad was ehh but the pizza wasn't good at all. The sauce tasted gross and the crust was soggy.

Doing a quick hop down to Newport for a early season tour of the mansions for Mother's Day and got into town around late dinner time. Kids wanted pizza, the adults wanted something hot. Did a quick Yelp search and Carmella's came up as a good find, so we gave it a try. Have to say not bad, got plain pizza (sorry, for you New Englanders out there, a "cheese" pizza - in Philly we just said plain, because were you really going to just have dough and sauce? Cheese is a given), which was good for breakfast too. Also tried the Steak and Cheese, which for someone used to Cheesesteaks (yes, the "cheese" is supposed to come first) were not bad at all - although if you do mushrooms, you really should use provolone cheese and not American. The girls got the mozzarella sticks and chicken tender that they liked. So, all in all, Carmella's is just right for when you are in the mood for a basic pizza place meal.

Some of the items on the menu are fantastic, but stay away from the buffalo chicken pizza! Also the customer service is as poor as the buffalo chicken pizza.

  • Bart D.

Great pizza! A little bit more expensive but not much and the taste is great. Stay away from chains and come here

    (4)
  • Kristy T.

Not impressed! Pizza was not cut properly, so toppings were all over the box. Pizza was thin, tasted ok, don't think I'll go back though.

Pretty neat little find for some tasty pizza! I love the location, pretty main street with good access to parking - which can be difficult in Newport different times of year. Good pizza at a pretty affordable price.

Ordered two slices of the meatball pizza. One of the best pizza slices I've ever had. Awesome crust and perfect sauce. Service was great too. Highly recommend.

  • Kelly F.

Always look forward to their pizza, no one else around Newport/Middletown has or can make anything that tastes this good! As good as their pizza is, the focaccia bread is even better, and for those with smaller appetites, its a meal in itself. You have to try this place, don't pass it by to go to one of those "famous" pizza chains that have sub-standard pizza that tastes exactly the same whether you buy it in New York or Salt Lake City. I remember one of the workers here from her days at Middletown House of Pizza on East Main Road (next to where Ocean State Job Lot is) and that place had good pizza, so she must have brought her recipes with her.

As a local, I'm bummed I didn't realize how great this spot really is. The grinders and wraps are all delicious. All ingredients are fresh and cooked just right. The cheese pizza (my favorite) is excellent. Everything is baked, so you're not getting greasy food. Highly recommended!!

Two hours away and this place reminded us of our Connecticut counterparts, but the service was friendlier and more personal. My girlfriend and I ordered the 'sweet sausage, goat cheese, caramelized onion & pesto pizza and an order of wings. Both were great. The owner and all of his staff were very friendly, attentive and eager to please! We will be coming back here the next time that we are in the area.

    (5)
  • Jeff G.

Heck yeah! Amazing ingredients and sauce. Gave me a free slice cuz the added topping spilled onto it. Will be back again and again!

  • Michael R.

Worst pizza I have ever had. Even when folding it, the pizza flops down. Tasted like dough with an odd sweet sauce. Couldn't taste the cheese or any of the toppings. I would recommend dominos before this place.

  • Jason B.

Yummy. Great thin crust cripsy pizza. Perfect amount of cheese and sauce.m Friendly people. Only wish they had Pepsi products instead of Coke. A little pricey, but not going to bleed you dry.

By the time my wife and I made it to this place, we were quite finished with greater Newport, but I really needed sone pizza after a poor experience at Bouchard. We ordered, they told us 30 minutes, we showed up in 28, then had to wait another 15. I don't recall an apology, just a "We got slammed." Whether fine dining or pizza, courtesy is tantamount. After that, the pizza was actually pretty good. We had meat lovers, and it was loaded. Though tasty, I don't feel that this pizza is as good as anything I have had in Connecticut. Recommended, but if you are a service junky, take their time estimates with a grain of salt to avoid disappointment.

Best pizza in RI. I've been a fan since 2005 and quality is consistent. My go-to is thin crust plain cheese pizza. LOVE! And get a side of their meatballs... Awesome.

  • Timothy M.

Pizza was excellent, a great variety of interesting pizzas. very good crust and a good amount of toppings. The salads are large and interesting as well. a little on the expensive side for pizza but not unreasonable based on the location I will be going back, in fact probably tonight. idk anything about delivery, i have only done pickup but my order last night was ready when i walked in

  • Maggie P.

Called in for a House specialty pizza & it was ready in 15 minutes. A 12 inch pizza loaded with veggies & tomato sauce wasn't too thick. Crispy & chewy crust. Yum. Go here.

    (4)
  • Bee E.

Only one worker and she was working at a leisurely space. They advertise you can get a slice of pizza but make sure you have time to wait. The pizza looked gross and tasted like that cheap frozen pizza.

    (2)
  • Charlie C.

Incredibly tasty pizza. Rivals anything on NY or Boston. Sauce has a nice kick and pizza cooked to perfection.

    (5)
  • Elizabeth S.

Best pizza around, hands down. New York style. Just wish they delivered to Jamestown!

    (5)
  • Terry P.

The pizza was just ok and they charged way too much for it. if it was cheap then i'd say it was good, or if the quality was amazing it would be worth worth the price. but as is, not so much.

A favorite from when I used to live in Newport -- they have some really interesting pizzas, sandwiches and salads to choose from, much more than your typical pizzeria. Sometimes I find myself spending a lot more money here than I intended for pizza and a sandwich, but it's pretty well worth it. My favorite pizza is the pesto sausage with caramelized onions...I could actually eat the entire thing in one sitting! For salad, go with the oven dried steak and gorgonzola -- it's HUGE and you'd think that everything in it doesn't go together, when it fact, it does beautifully. Salads normally don't fill me up, but this one keeps me full for days! If you want a sandwich/wrap, balsamic chicken is a solid winner -- they actually grill the wrap so it's super crispy!

Excellent pizza after visiting all the palaces!! Conveniently located in the heart of the town.

The pizza here is delicious and the 4 Cheese Garlic Bread is finger licking good. They would get 5 stars from me if the staff was friendlier and they were happy to see you there.

If you want pizza this is a very good place to go. The wraps are good as well. NOW!!, for 8$ i should atleast get a bag of chips with my wrap. The thought that they do not have a frier to cook fries, o-rings,mozz sticks, WINGS? Im not gonna sugar coat this reveiw, the price is high, The food is good, Get a Frier.

  • Mark D.

Hands down the best pizza and wraps around. Unique flavor combinations stuffed full of ingredients which are consistently delicious. Used to order pizza from other places but never again. Excellent service as well!

  • J.P. E.

This place has some pretty good sandwiches, wraps, and huge salads. They put their own twist on the wraps which I do enjoy. ANd the food is always steaming hot right out of the oven. The pizza is pretty good too and being from NY, thats a compliment - I'm pretty picky about pizza. If you go for lunch though I do recommend you call you order in ahead of time so its ready when you get there. Since everything is made fresh, it takes some time to get that sandwich you ordered just right...

Being the creature of habit I am, I've been settling for the mediocre pizza of a Papa Johns for much of the last year. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against the chain, but it just doesn't compare. I've lived in Middletown for less than two months and eaten pizza from Carmella's at least six times. I was hooked from the word go. It helps that it is practically across the street, but I would go there regardless. Now, remember, when reading any of my reviews, odds are I am eating the same thing - every...single....time. My Carmella's standard is a white pizza, brushed with garlic oil, with chicken and prosciutto. On average, I'm a two slice girl, and then I'm full, and no I do not usually eat the leftovers for breakfast. However, when it comes to Carmella's, I have been known to eat all but a slice. It's just that good. Some nights I drive home hoping my fiance isn't cooking dinner just so I can order from Carmella's.

Best NY style pizza on the island! Thin chewy crust, flavorful sauce, perfect amount of cheese. Additionally, I found their sub to be great. The turkey was not that gross slimy stuff that you often get at a pizza shop. Good meat to topping ratio. And definitely pay the $.99 to get a side of creamy balsamic dipping sauce. In fact, get two just in case your girlfriend eats it all before you get a chance to enjoy it too! Pleasant staff, reasonable prices. You get what you pay for! Will definitely be a repeat customer!

Ordered to go from the Middletown location. It was ready in 20 minutes, just as they had told me on the phone. I was going to order online and get delivered, but that estimated time was well over an hour. Good basic "new york style" pizza. Though I am not from New York as many other reviewers have noted they are. Ordered a plain cheese pizza. Thin crust, a little greasy, and I liked that I could order a medium. The guys behind the counter and at the oven were also really nice - no problems with service! Would definitely order again.

Nice friendly place, decent pizza but nothing like the "real thing". Thin crust more like a cracker, missing those bubbles and chewy texture...

I've microwaved ellios pizza slices that had more flavor than this dive. I now know what a pizza box with hot sauce and cold chicken taste like. Idk what was dryer, the body of Christ or the pizza crust here. I've had more satisfying meals on An 11am Sunday morning mass than here. I'm from NY and this is the furthest thing from it. The only Carmela worse for us in NY is Anthony in the playoffs

Good food, poor service. I went with my wife and one of her friends. I ordered the sausage pesto pizza which was great. HOWEVER, they told me it would take a half hour when I ordered but it was more like 45 minutes. My wife ordered some chicken pasta which she said was ok but overly salty. Her friend got a chicken parmagian sandwich and a spicy chicken salad. She said the food was good but she was not happy with how long the food took to come out. I mentioned the poor service earlier, which was not limited to the food taking a long time. The person taking our order was short, unfriendly, and gave off a vibe that we were wasting his time by ordering food at a restaurant that he gets PAID to work at. I recommend the pizza, although you should order it ahead of time.

  • missy l.

Didn't do it for me.. then again, i'm a hard ass to please new yorker, so perhaps i shouldn't dine at places that tout new york pizza. we also got the four cheese pasta which ended up being essentially all cheese. it was inedible and could easily have used a whole pound of pasta to balance out the cheese. i'm getting heartburn just thinking about it.

Great NY Style pizza. It was my turn for dinner at the family reunion and went with Carmella's. No regrets, everyone loved it. There is nothing worse than ordering pizza for 30 people only to find out you wasted your money. This pie was great and if we ever return to the Newport area, we'll order it again.

Best pizza in town hands down! Wraps and pizza are huge, buffalo chicken pizza is insanely good so is the wrap. Staff is more than friendly and the environment is great. You definitely get what you pay for and then some!

I hate it when you have to search for meat in a sandwich. I was very disappointed by the lack of presentation and just down right unhappy with this grinder. I got vegetables with just a hint of meat. I'll know better next time. You've failed me after someone talked you up. I showed them the sandwich without a bite missing, they were shocked.

YUM! Great pizza and super friendly. Plus, they deliver! We stopped in by chance before a movie down the street and I'm SO glad we picked this place. Best pizza I've had in a while and the breadstrips were delish too. They have a Portsmouth location too! Also (and yes I wrote this down for this very review), there was a family across from us while we were eating and before they left one of the little boys said "Mumma there's one thing I have to say - that was DEE-licious!". :) It's a bit pricey, but for a $12 small pizza, you get the same size as you would for a large elsewhere, so it's definitely comparable.

    (5)
  • Laura D.

5 stars for their plain cheese pizza. 3 stars for the house special pizza. That one was so overloaded with toppings that it was soggy. The plain cheese however was perfect!

DO NOT order Delivery. We ordered the CHICKEN Prosciutto (pasta tossed with prosciutto, CHICKEN, spinach, roasted garlic, diced tomatoes and BROCCOLI)...sounds great, right? Not the same with NO CHICKEN and NO BROCCOLI. Paid $17 for nothing!! They should be ashamed of themselves. Take the money and run. Hey, it's a delivery to a hotel, by the time they realize there is NO CHICKEN or BROCCOLI we'll have the money and who cares. How they got BEST rating is beyond us.....unless you stand over them in the kitchen to be sure you are getting what you paid for....maybe.....but probably NOT.

I have always been pleased with the quality of Carmella's pizza, and often order at least once a week. Last order they delivered the wrong pizza (I ordered onions, they delivered mushrooms). No biggie I figured, it was a busy night. I thought nothing of it and ate the pizza although I'm not a huge fan of mushrooms. Well, about 30 minutes later I recieved a call from Carmella's stating that they realized their mistake and were sending the correct pizza free of charge. That's what I'm talking about when it comes to customer service! I'm sure if I had called and complained, most establishments would correct the order, but to be proactive and actually call me, that's impressive. With great pizza and great customer service, I will be a long time customer of Carmella's.

This was the first time we had pizza at Carmella's and it will not be the last. The pizza (sausage and eggplant) was absolutely dee-lish and reminded me of my NY roots. The owner was so helpful when we were choosing the type of crust we wanted. We followed his suggestions and were delighted with the results. We ate in the restaurant.

Without peer, they make the best crust on Acquidneck Island. (But they are not even close to Aniello's in Corning, NY) The staff keeps the dough fresh and never misses a beat. I'm fond of the white pizza with sausage and garlic, but all their pies are made with first quality ingredients. Not the cheapest pies in town, but the tastiest in my opinion. We've always done take out, but you can eat in at their convenient location across from several hotels.

Best pizza in southern R.I. House Special has fresh, tasty toppings. Crust is tasty, perfectly baked. These guys are two for two. Brought our own bottle of wine, called in the order from Jamestown. Pie was coming out of the oven as we arrived. Perfect!

  • Sara B.

No bueno.

Pretty neat little find for some tasty pizza! I love the location, pretty main street with good access to parking - which can be difficult in Newport different times of year. Good pizza at a pretty affordable price.

Worst pizza I have ever had. Even when folding it, the pizza flops down. Tasted like dough with an odd sweet sauce. Couldn't taste the cheese or any of the toppings. I would recommend dominos before this place.

Awesome.

Called in for a House specialty pizza & it was ready in 15 minutes. A 12 inch pizza loaded with veggies & tomato sauce wasn't too thick. Crispy & chewy crust. Yum. Go here.

Only one worker and she was working at a leisurely space. They advertise you can get a slice of pizza but make sure you have time to wait. The pizza looked gross and tasted like that cheap frozen pizza.

Perfect!

Damn. DAAYYUUMM!

Great pizza! A little bit more expensive but not much and the taste is great. Stay away from chains and come here

Heck yeah! Amazing ingredients and sauce. Gave me a free slice cuz the added topping spilled onto it. Will be back again and again!

Worst pizza I have ever had. Even when folding it, the pizza flops down. Tasted like dough with an odd sweet sauce. Couldn't taste the cheese or any of the toppings. I would recommend dominos before this place.

Awesome.

Incredibly tasty pizza. Rivals anything on NY or Boston. Sauce has a nice kick and pizza cooked to perfection.

Best pizza around, hands down. New York style. Just wish they delivered to Jamestown!

Fantastic pizza. Perfect crust and the right amount of cheese and toppings. The service was fantastic. Low key and friendly atmosphere. Everyone there was warm and welcoming--both the owners/staff and the customers. Don't miss it of you are in the area!

Nice greasy pizza just how I like it. Defiantly newyork style! The crust was a little hard though "/

Everything is good but the salads will give you an upset stomach, as experienced multiple times by many of my coworkers. Great customer service, very prompt delivery service.

Perfect!
