This place gets two stars, but really, that's an average; we went twice (in the same week.) The first time, the service was fantastic and the food was great. The meatloaf was delicious, the empanada was excellent, and the lasagna was tasty. We appreciated the BYOB and the great interaction with the owner and server. It was so good, we went back with friends. The second time, we discovered the Carolyn's is inconsistent (which I subsequently heard from someone else.) The service was slow and inattentive; we had to ask for plates for bread, a water refill, a corkscrew (which was essentially dropped on the table), etc. The first time we went, our entrees came with salads. The second time, there was no mention. I don't really know whether salads are included or not. The food the second time was also, well, spotty. The empanada was excellent the first time. The second time, the centers were still frozen. The waitress essentially shrugged when we told her (and we were somewhat surprised that we were still charged). My friend and I ordered the pork tenderloin special, which was good, and which the waitress, owner, and chef all proudly told us was "made today." We were surprised this was a selling point, and it made us worry a bit about when our other dishes were made. My wife ordered the ahi, which was fairly overcooked. The owner said she could cook it more if we liked and seemed shocked when my wife said her (barely pink, mostly white) fish was really kinda already overcooked. The owner and chef asked how things were, but seemed to be fishing for compliments rather than asking opinions. Over all, we'd love to go back to the Carolyn's of our first visit, but the sheer threat of the Carolyn's of our second visit is sufficient to dissuade us, which is really too bad. I wish we could recommend this place, as we'd really like to see SOMEPLACE succeed in this location, but the empty parking lot indicates that we'll likely be playing "Another one bites the dust" sometime soon.

It looks like this place has changed to a catering and event service. It is no longer open for lunch or dinner for the public.

My family and I have been here about 5 times, once was for breakfast, and twice in a single week. We have always been very pleased with the food, service and pricing. The staff and owners have always been gracious. There are some Spanish (think Spain not Latin America) inspired menu items that are authentic and excellent as verified by my father who spent many years there on business. This is a nice cozy alternative to the crowds in Newark. I look forward to trying their take out items in the future as a step up from typical take out. This is a BYOB resteraunt which is just fine with me. Alcohol is where the profit is at most resteraunts so here you can drink what you like at the best price you can find!

Have had a take-out dinner that was OK - decided to stop for breakfast before errands after being housebound with all the snow storms. Chose the Spanish Omelet which is described as "Traditional Spanish omelet consisting of eggs with slices of chorizo, sautéed potatoes, onions, red and green peppers with salsa and sour cream on the side." It is a potato casserole, not an omelet. 90% potatoes, no chorizo, a few chopped peppers and onions and virtually no eggs. It was served with a huge helping of home fries which were OK - between the side of home fries and omelet - it was a breakfast of potatoes. Tried to pick through all the potatoes in the omelet to get to the other ingredients - there was nothing left. I had a few bites and just drank my coffee. Breakfast was $11.65 and I was still hungry. Other breakfast items might be OK - but stay away from the Spanish omelet.

Sorry to say, needs major improvement. The turkey sub (hoagie) was completely bland. Wait staff asked what we wanted on our sub, and then the sub had nothing we requested- left off some things and added others that were not requested. No spices at all (e.g. not even salt, pepper) were on the sub. Menu said hoagie comes with side salad and fries, but instead the meal came with just homemade chips, no salad. And some of the chips were soft inside. Ewww. Also, regarding the hoagies on the lunch menu, it says "choice of contentments". Whaaa? Do they mean condiments, complements, accompaniments?? Food took a l-o-n-g time to arrive. After about 1/2 hour the salads finally arrived. Restaurant has no shades/blinds on the ceiling-height windows, and the blinding late afternoon sun was streaming in, making half of the main room's seats intolerably glaring. Saw one patron sitting at a sun-drenched table with his large brimmed hat tilted down. The building itself has been nicely fixed up, but the attractive sign out front hardly makes up for the very limited menu. Large portions, but bland tasting. Everyone in our party agreed there was a serious lack of flavor in each of our meals. And I have a reputation in the family for liking rather bland food, but it was not at all flavorful. The menu says they have a "soup of the day", however, they don't actually have soup, according to the wait staff when asked. At least the wait staff was friendly. Restaurant had only been open a couple of weeks when we ate there, but would have expected it to be more together than this. It's now been 4 months since opening, but we still can't bring ourselves to try it again. The Landenberg area is so desperate for any restaurants that we really wanted to like this place, but unless we hear it's undergone a big transformation we can't recommend it. And our standards are not very high, for sure.

I've eaten at Carolyn's 6+ times and the food has always been delicious. All of it is freshly prepared there and the important distinction here is that it is not coming off of a SYSCO freezer truck and passed off as an "in house" creation. They take the time to use locally sourced meats, vegetables, etc. when available. The menu is a good combination of comfort food for the winter months with some lighter options too. According to the owner, they will be changing the menu seasonally. Sounds good to me. The mediterranean ahi tuna is wonderful, the potato soup creamy and flavorful with shredded cheese and crumbled bacon, the bread pudding drizzled with caramel and chocolate is to die for. It's BYOB and that's a plus as far as I'm concerned! It's nice to have another dining option in our fairly rural area, especially one that is so reasonably priced with generous portions!
