If you're looking for some of that new-fangled California cuisine, nouveau pan Asian, molecular gastronomy, city slicker food, this is not the place for you. When you go to Top of the 80's, you're going to a place a bit frozen in time. The menu features items that your parents or grandparents would appreciate in a nice dinner out: garden salad with thousand island dressing, prime rib, chicken diane and about a dozen starchy options for your side dish. Our small group tried the prime rib, the seafood combo, and the rib eye. All were fine, but anything is going to be fine when it's swimming in butter. There are a handful of wine options, which I found pretty shockingly overpriced given the quality of the choices. And desserts (selection made from a live tray of the options) were pretty good: the key lime pie was better than average, and I hear their chocolate oatmeal cake is a crowd favorite. The highlight of Top of the 80's is the view. Most of the dining room sits on massive windows overlooking the valley below, which makes for a pleasant feel to the whole restaurant. The price point here is quite high, so save your trip here for a special occasion with people who want safe food options and a nice, relaxed, fancy-ish dining vibe.

I am staying at the hotel next door and decided I'd catch a view and have a meal. I went over around 6 to catch the sunset. The view was nice (foggy) but I was terribly disappointed in the food. I wasn't expecting 5 star, but seriously the food was bland and under cooked and way over priced. There was some bread brought out with some olive oil. No spices. No Balsalmic, just a ramekin full of plain old olive oil and a paper doily topped with chibatta bread (I think). I had the special which was Tilapia and Crab served with a lemon butter sauce. The Tilapia was brown in the middle, it wasn't very flaky and tasted very fishy. It was also luke-warm. The Crab meat was alright, but it was mixed with crunchy veggies and I didn't like the contrasting textures. The Baked Potato must have been cooked WELL in advance and reheated. I was only lukewarm when It was served to me. Not piping hot like you would expect a fresh cooked potato to be. The skin was not crunchy, it peeled off in a soggy layer. When I think of a good baked potato I think of a crunchy skin and a fluffy inside. I was hoping for a pillowy and buttery goodness, but the butter wouldn't even soak in. It was hard, I had to dig to even get a bite. The presentation was nothing more than the fish concoction on the middle of the plate with a sprinkle of some green flakes of herb and an yellow colored sauce on top. The potato came separate. There was no salad or other sides (unless you wanted to pay extra). This and a soda cost me $30.48 plus tip. Even the food with the best view in the house isn't worth that price. The decor left something to be desired. It was as previously mentioned by others, very dated, Kelly green and Mauve. It could really use some help. Another couple was seated at the next table and he had to wipe crumbs off his chair before he could sit down. I wouldn't recommend the food or dining here, but maybe a drink on the patio or at the bar would be ok.

Outdated atmosphere, poor service, & really bad food!

Amazing views. Food and service was great. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.

The view was great! The service was poor (but we had a group of 14). However, they brought out a few sides that went with some meals but we didn't know which meals they went with. Apparently the servers didn't either and they just left them on the serving tray on the side! I guess they decided they couldn't figure out which meals had a side of vegetables... Really no excuse for that because they didn't try for more than 5 seconds. The vegetable sides ended up going to waste! Really unbelievable to me. Also, they brought our meals separately, by about 15 minutes apart.... The first ones were nearly finished by the time the last meals came out. It's also fairly expensive for what you get, and in a restaurant that's getting old, it should be less expensive. It's a place that was classy in the past, but is overdue for a renovation. The other side is that the food was great. Everybody enjoyed their food (except for one steak that was overcooked, medium well instead of medium rare). We hypothesized that this could also have been due to the lackluster service and the steak sitting under warming lights and continuing to cook since it came out near the end and other steaks came out sooner.

Needs a face lift BADLY! a bit overpriced and very inconsistent. The view is the best part of the visit!

Ok ok I hate to give a bad review so let me say this restaurant has a great view. In fact a terrific view. And that is all it has. This place is stuck back in time. Way back. To far back for me so I will let it go at that. As it is the only place to eat buyer be ware.

Surprisingly expensive, but the bread was warm and delicious, the Caesar salad was good with just the right amount of dressing, and our server was very friendly. The view of the valley was very pretty--visit early, or there's nothing to see. The decor reminds me of older men in polyester suits with visible nose hairs smoking cigars, so it's not a place to visit with a date you're trying to impress, but your grandparents will love it.

Don't go there late. All the bartender did was try and rush me out. Pouring me beers when I was half done. She poured me a Boddingtons that was 25% head. She told me it was open until 12 and left at 11:30 and told me some kid would take care of me. Zero personality from the staff The wings were crap too.

Musty smell when you walk in. . I tried to order prime Rib end cut medium rare and was lectured by the waitress that it doesn't exist, hmm I have never had that problem anywhere else. . As others have said it does have a great view. . I had the sea scallop appetizer. . 3 scallops, seared, on a peppered cranberry chutney, which really did not match well. . Microgreens were present, would have rather had a lemon beurre blanc sauce. Disappointed at a price of 15.00. I got a side salad with Balsamic dressing. . The lettuce was warm. . The waitress asked how I liked the Appetizer, I told her, her comment was she would pass my opinion along. . Main course NY strip and baked tater. . The tater was warm, could not even melt butter, the skin overly crisp. . The Steak was to be done au poivre and it was dry with the sauce on the side! Never had it not cooked gently in the sauce, and was not pepper crusted. The plate, square, had parsley sprinkled in the corners. . As Robert Irvine would say... How 70s. The Steak had burnt Onion crisps on top and certainly was not choice or prime. . Fine dining it ain't. . . The bill was 50.00 for me. . I would NOT recommend this gormet restrant. . Save your money.

Had dinner with friends at the top of the 80's last night. All of us had a different fish dish and they were all very good. Service was great also. Thanks Jackie

Great place that has been here for years. Incredible views of the Lehigh Valley from the floor to ceiling glass walls. Traditional fare with a few new things mixed in. The place is fairly classy for the area and looks to have a regular clientele, like Jack Palance when he was still around. Right next to the Hampton Inn off I -81 and I-80 (hence the name), its a rare find on the interstate corridor.

Very boring, overpriced menu. Food is prepared well but you can find equal quality for less elsewhere. Even Applebees' menu is more exciting. I found the portions to be inversely proportional to the value of the ingredients. "Run of the mill" is not what I expect when I'm paying a three-digit tab for a 2-person meal.

We went on 07/05/12. We got there at 7:30pm on a Thurs night. There were only a couple of other tables occupied. As mentioned, the view is spectacular. We watched the sun set. :-) They have a nice patio for outdoor seating. Even seating off the bar area offers the beautiful view. The decor IS very dated. Circa 1987. Mauve/pink everywhere. Even the mantel over the fireplace is mauve! The wallpaper border around the dining room is old. :-( The hostess that seated us was pleasant. The waitress was less communicative. No pleasantries exchanged. :-/ I'm pretty outgoing and I tried to engage her but it didn't work. At one point, she disappeared for a little while and my drink sat empty far too long. She wasn't that busy (we were her only table) so we assumed she was on a smoke break. While we both enjoyed our food, I found the entrees a little overpriced (my chicken francaise was $20..I'm used to $12-$15 chicken entrees). Based on the menu & prices, we determined this is more of a "special occasion" place. Once we realized we were the last diners, we got our check. We moved over to the bar to catch the Phillie's game. We were 2 of the 5 people at the bar. The bartender mixed a good drink but, again, it was like pulling teeth to get some chat from him. Even about the game. He carded us so he knew we were from out of state. No chat. We left before the end of the game because we were so bored (and the only people there at that point). We will go again but not without a discount certificate from Restarantdotcom.

I have to say I have had a wide range of experiences with this restaurant. We were recently revisiting this area of NEPA after moving away several years ago. The location and view is phenomenal, but the food was at best mediocre given the price points. The service was so far below mediocre that I am having a hard time not giving them one star on principle alone. I was the first to arrive waiting for my wife and several friends to arrive. The bartender was surly and uncommunicative. She seemed "put upon" that so many people "needed" things from her - like drinks.... When the others arrived we were seated at a great table in a room to the side. As I stated before, although a little dated inside there is not a better view in many restaurants I have been in around the country. A waitress appeared and took our drink order. Things seemed to be going well. It was a good twenty minutes or so until she returned with the drinks (two Manhattans and three glasses of wine). In her defense my hour at the bar observing the bartender's work patterns and multiple trips outside to smoke make me think this was not the waitresses fault. She then asked if we were ready to order. When one of the members of our party hesitated the waitress informed us that "You had better decide because we close at 9PM." Admittedly, we were dining late for this area (We sat down around 8:15 PM) but perhaps just small bit of decorum may have gone along way. I am not sure how many $200 tabs they had that night, but I was there from about 6:30 until close and I would categorize it as "lightly attended" at best. I would also add that these two employees were not bored college kids working for extra money, the staff here is almost exclusively middle aged women who have worked at this restaurant for along time. Our food arrived and I would say it was uninspired and overpriced. My dish (Chicken and Crabmeat Piccata) was definitely not worth the $25 price. The dish was definately assembled of premade ingredients and the sauce was far from what I remembered on past visits. When the waitress came back again it was only to inquire as to wheter or not we would like coffee. She did stop short of delivering this inquiry in the manner of - "You don't want coffee too do you?" but wewere certain that she was thinking it. No offer of dessert of after dinner drinks. we did order coffee although I am not sure it was not just for amusement at that point. While we drank our coffee she turned the lights up in the restaurant and put Pete the busboy through his paces by loudly ordering him around. As I have grown older I have noticed the fog of nostalgia has a way of obscuring negative experiences. I have had good meals at this restaurant and good service, but this last visit is the one I will commit to memory. It will certainly motivate me to consider some other options in the area the next time I visit. If you have taken the time to read this review I would offer two suggestions other than Top of the 80's - Both in Hazleton, which can be a little sketchy in a NEPA coal town kind of way, but still worth checking out. Angelo's Italian House and The Ovalon.

A group of six of us went there for a bday dinner. When our overpriced, tasteless, freezer burnt food came out, a mouse came running out into the dining room. Two bus boys preceded to chase it around for 30 minutes and couldn't catch it. Most of us couldn't even eat after this event. No one even apologized for this event and the most they did for us was give us a free drink. Horrible experience. Don't go here.
