It's been 15 years since my last visit, and a dinner stop at Ernie's after a day at Ski Liberty was a no-brainer. 15 years, and Ernie's has lost nothing. It's been there since 1921- or so the pictures on the wall show- but the decor is more along the lines of 1950. My years at Gettysburg College taught me that there was no order better than "two with on one"- two chili dogs, smothered in mustard and onions- with a side of fries with gravy. No, I don't usually eat that way, but come on...this is permissible, at Ernie's. Food came out quickly, and service was great. Total bill for me and the boy was $15. Can't beat that with a stick! And yes, Ernie's now apparently takes credit cards. Or, at least, they took mine. It doesn't get any more real than Ernie's. These hot dogs will live on in my mind- and arteries- for some time!

Have been coming here for the past 10 years when we visit for the Holidays. They have the best French Fries around. Always perfect.

Stopped in here to get some lunch to go. I wasn't really interested in this place, but almost everything else around was closed. I had a chef salad and bean soup. The soup was just ok, a little flavorless. The salad was 50% meat/cheese with just a handful of lettuce and a couple tomato wedges. That might be a plus for some people, but not for me. My husband had some kind of burger with gravy, which he liked. The onion rings were also good. The place looked tiny, and it was pretty full at lunch time. The service was friendly and quick, which I appreciated since I didn't call my order in ahead and had to just stand and wait.

Chili dogs you dream about for years after. When my friends are back in town, they always brag about their requisite stop to ernie's with a mouth watering Facebook photo post.

Was recommended this place by a local and was disappointed by the unfriendly waitstaff and the unwillingness to make a simple accommodation/change to a menu item. Food was inexpensive which is a plus but there are better places in a close vicinity.

We love this place! Mostly a home to locals who are looking for a quick lunch, the wait staff is friendly, quick, and courteous. The food is very inexpensive and delicious. Rarely will you pay over $20 for two people. The hot dogs are classic, the burgers are mouthwatering, but for me, the best thing is the turkey club. Definitely off the beaten path in Gettysburg, but well worth the stop in.

The friends I was with went to Gettysburg College and recommended that i get a hot dog. I like hot dogs and I wasn't sure when I'd be eating dinner so I got the Two dogs and medium fry combo. It seemed like a good idea until I was asked if i wanted everything on it. I had assumed they would just come in a bun with nothing on it so I had to ask "what is everything?". "Mustard, chili, and onions", she replied. Mustard I'm fine with; I'll usually put honey mustard on my dogs. I don't really care for the other toppings that fell under the "everything" umbrella but I felt obliged to have the hot dogs with no special order to hold toppings. At this point I was wishing I had just got one hot dog. Once the food came and I brushed some of the onion mountain aside I realized why my friends wanted to eat here while they were back in their old college town. This was one of the tastiest hot dogs I've had in years and I had two of them and a pile of fries for only about $6. My only complaint is that Ernie's is cash only.

My grandparents grew up here in Gettysburg, and I spent time here growing up. For whatever reason, my grandfather, a rather conservative Lutheran Republican who attended St. James, would never come here. My mother and I thus always had to sneak in. The hot dogs are grilled and thick skinned with fresh chili and the most tempting onion topping. The service is hit or miss, but the hot dogs are always grilling in the front window and they are always fresh. Coupled with a Coke and a bag of Martin's potato chips, you have one high calorie cheap meal. This place takes me back to my youth and I can still see Ernie in the window making hot dogs. The conversations are always interesting and this is the place to hear that unique Pennsylvania accent. May Ernie's ring in another century in Adams County. Locals seem to love the fries with gravy. What's up with that?

Great breakfast, friendly service and very clean. I asked our hotel where to eat and this was one of two suggestions, described as a greasy spoon but it wasn't. It's just one block down from the traffic circle. I had eggs, bacon, small home fries and English muffin, not greasy at all. We will be eating here again tomorrow.

Talk about a "old school" diner-restaurant. We had the good fortune to stop at Ernie's Texas Lunch while visiting a friend's farm in Littlestown PA (a few miles from downtown Gettysburg). Stopping in for breakfast, there were five of us in the party. Unlike diners us "city slickers" are use to, it's very small and quaint in comparison. As we walked through the door, the counter was to the left, lined with stools. There were small tables lining the wall to the right, and a large table for 8 at the back of the restaurant. I ordered three scrambled eggs, toast with bacon. I shared Arlene's pancakes. Not only was I famished, but the breakfast, while considered standard by any means, was delicious. Our server delivered the food to our table quickly. Unfortunately, my wife and another in our party was served the wrong breakfast. They were told to keep it on the house while the cook prepared the correct dishes. Just because of sheer charm, and the delicious breakfast, I hope to return again in the future -- this time maybe for lunch. Thank you, Ernie's.

My daughter and I were in Gettysburg looking at the College and the Battlefield and we found Ernie's completely by surprise. The quality and flavor of the food, the history, the quick service, all of it made this restaurant one of the best we have been to in awhile. The chipped beef gravy is amazing, the home fries cooked just right, and the coffee is damn good to boot! Stop by and enjoy!

Sign on the door said open at 7, went in a little after 11am for an early lunch and not a soul in sight! Lights and everything were all turned off, but door was open and the sign said they were open. Bad business. Luckily it forced us to try the Blue Gray bar and grill and had an EXCELLENT meal! Oh, and PS, this was on Memorial Day and the streets were packed, I can only imagine the business they lost by being MIA during prime hours.

Ate here late one Monday afternoon with my wife and kids. Friendly service and very friendly prices. Place feels like you are stepping back in time -- to the 1930s diner that it once was. One kid had a hot dog (weiner), another had a chicken patty. They both liked them. Delicious fries as a side. I enjoyed a grilled cheese and wife had a turkey club. Service was prompt. Place was very clean, including bathrooms.

A OK. That's exactly right. You really can't go wrong here for lunch. I've been coming to Gettysburg for years and always passed this place by. One time we finally went in and now go back every time we visit. The only thing i do not like is that the hot dogs have a thick skin. It creeps me out a little. That being said i still eat 'em, and enjoy "em. The chii sauce with the onions is really good.

  • B. S.

This is a hot dog joint which is alright. Locals who really love the place like the fancy lingo of ordering the dog. Enjoyed the chili and the chance to order eggs for a kid who was too picky to like the hot dogs cut down the middle.

  • Jennifer R.

Cash only. I had to run to the ATM after I ordered. Oops. My kid loves this diner and likes sitting at the counter. Classic Retro stainless steel and formica. Super nice staff. Basic eats. Breakfast sandwiches are served all day. Good fries. Read it's 3rd generation of family. Original name was 'Ernie's Weenies'. Dunno, it might get a lot more attention if they had kept that name.

For anyone who truly enjoys food as well as a great diner experience, AVOID this place by all means possible! Worst lunch I've had for years with the exception of having had lunch at my daughter's elementary school and that is not meant as a joke. Ordered the hot roast beef sandwich with gravy and fries for $8.75... I don't think what was under the AWFUL tasting gravy was real roast beef, the texture of that mystery meat was way too weird. Fries were run of the mill freezer stuff and they were the "good" part of the lunch. Daughter had a little dry burger that made Burger King shine. Simply can't describe how bad this was, throw in an incredibly rude waitress (my daughter made a smiley face of ketchup for her fries, she showed the waitress and the nasty witch rolled her eyes back and walked away with a sigh... my girl thought she had done something wrong, I truly felt like smacking that woman and then she ignored my daughter when she tried to thank her for the sh*t lunch and then tried again by raising her voice and was ignored again) and $27 for 2 awful sandwiches and a kids meal means this place will never be recommended by me unfortunately. The bathrooms were just as weird and nasty as the food, just ask my kids... We went to AKA Friscos in Frederick MD the day before for lunch and had a beautiful freshly grilled flank steak salad which was HUGE, an amazing stuffed Italian sandwich on freshly baked bread and a freshly baked potato with for real FRESH oven roasted beef for LESS than we paid Ernie's for the nastiest lunch in our lives. The keyword is FRESH, and Ernie's is SO far from that I think even Ernie would turn over in his grave if he knew what was happening here. I don't care if you think that both my children and myself are arrogant, but if you give this dive 4 or 5 stars then you truly need to have your tastebuds adjusted... I've never written a review like this but I think I have found a place that really deserves it...

My family and I love this place. It's as simple as it can get, but a place well worth a visit. The service is always outstanding and the food just about always hits the spot. Ernie's gets that extra star for being open at 6 AM. Early battlefield stompers appreciate the effort!

If you like servers eating from your plate before you do then you will love Earnie's A friend and I entered Ernie's Texas Lunch with high hopes and expectations of a great breakfast. What came next horrified me and was appalling. There was only one server in the restaurant this morning and I believe her name is Karen. Our server brought out two plates of food that she brought to the booth behind us. An elderly woman was sitting in this booth with her husband who wore a bright red Phyllis hat. Our server seemed to be very friendly with the couple. As the server put the plates on the elderly woman's table she help herself to the bacon on the plate. She then went to the window to pick up one other plate and she began to come towards our table. As she passed the elderly woman's table she picked up the plate she had eaten off of and proceeded to bring it and the plate she had just retrieved from the window. She put both plates on our table. The person I was with received the plate our server was eating bacon from. Confronting our server, she at first denied she ate from the plate, then she fessed up and offered re-do our food. Disgusted and nauseated we stood up and left. If you go here be prepared to have your food eaten before you do. Happy Viruses!!!

So simple, yet so good. Walking into Ernie's is like putting an old sweatshirt. You feel comfortable and relaxed. The diner atmosphere is nothing fancy, but its clean and nostalgic. Seating at booths or at the counter. My 3 year old and I had lunch there last week. Is there anywhere else you can find a "Cut Up" on the menu? Those who are childless, won't appreciate the convenience of a hot dog being served already cut into pieces for you. No bun, cause she's not going to eat that anyway. And for only $1.70. I'd pay $4+ for her lunch anywhere else and she wouldn't enjoy it near as much without the stool to spin on. FYI...If you're a Coke lover, you won't find much in Gettysburg. Ernie's has always served coke products.

Great place! Stopped in for lunch - had "one with" - the original Ernie's dog with mustard, chili and a PILE of finely chopped onions. Delish! Cheap! Retro! Wished I had ordered the gravy with the fries but good fries. If you appreciate the old lunch counter you will love Ernie's.

I never really appreciated Ernie's while in college, but now whenever I am back Ernie's' is a must. Place is a step back to a good ole fashion lunch counter. Is small and can get busy as they only have a dozen booths, a counter with stools, plus take out coming and going. Hotdogs are as good as it gets!! They do have breakfast, sandwiches, and such, but I usually stick to the dog, fries and a coke. Price comes in under $5.00. Get the gravy for the fries, it is the thick dark brown variety that is perfect for dipping. Want a quick, delicious, and cheap lunch? STOP AT ERNIES!!

Ernie's does a great breakfast, too. I'm partial to the sausage/egg/cheese on an English muffin sandwich. Add to that some home fries with creamed chipped beef on top, and you've got comfort food at it's best.

hidden little restaurant worth the walk past the other fine eateries in town for a simple, quick lunch. it's little more than a 1950s sandwich counter, nothing gourmet but clean and tastefully appointed. I'd imagine it's great for families because it's cheap. Hours are limited and I think they're cash only. I highly recommend the hot dog.
