Aite so after about 10 years and many visits, i'll review this establishment on yelp.... (i dont think yelp existed 6 years ago.... anyways) So i was a student at Drexel in 2005 and a few of my friends from highschool where im from in Maryland had been to philly a bunch of times for hockey matches and stuff. One day as we three were leaving from philly to drive back home, one of them says lets go to this place called Charlie's Cheeseburgers. We were like 'sure!'. Now of course every yelp review is honest right? so in full disclosure, when we took the exit '420' , i was like ... 'uhhhh where are we going' to the driver. You can imagine the confusion when we rolled up to the restaurant building. One thing is for sure, Charlies is not known for a royal facade.... But I had no idea what I was in store for. So the driver of our convoy had been to charlies and said burgers were good. Not knowing size or anything, i ordered two burgers. As i began to look around this place was the mere essentials of burger building. Small patties, buns, cheese, and condiments is all that goes into a burger, but the consummate product of those ingredients is literally mouth watering. I thought two burgers would suffice but i was wrong. I ended up buying 3 additional cheeseburgers to my first 2.... I make the analogy of sashimi (sushi). These burgers are tiny and so smooth. The patties, cheese, and soft buns are melt in your mouth. Combined with a shake, and you have a seriously tasty combination. This is one of the MUST-GOs that i tell all my friends about on the east coast....and frankly noone has heard about charlies (besides those who 'know'). You have to go outside the city for sure, but i make it a point that no matter the time or plans, a charlies cheeseburger needs to be on my itinerary when heading through that area. Hope this helps!

Awesomeness. The place is very retro. Good service and will be back for more burgers.

The definitive Delco cheese burger. I have been eating here since forever and my parents before me. It's killer but $5 for a double Bunny Special seems on the high side. 2 burgers (double bunny specials)chips and a shake will set you back close to 20 bucks. But that's life . Still a bargain !!

I live in Sweden and an old family friend took me here when I was visiting at the age of 13 and it was the best burger(s) I ever had even til this day. I think I had 6 or 7. And on top of that the milkshake was great. So this is one of my two "must go to" when I'm back in the states.

Great old school burger spot. The menu is very limited...just burgers, fries and milkshakes. Seating is also limited so if you come during prime lunch hour you may have to get your food to go.

Charlie's is a delco institution. Diminutive burgers, chock full of fatty beef flavor, well seasoned on a grilled bun. Methinks one of the secrets to the flavor is their super seasoned flattop grill. I always opt for a minimum of two cheeseburgers, crowned with a little pile of fried onions and a spoonful of ketchup. The shakes are top notch as well, made with bassets ice cream. The simple menu, executed superbly in a humble environ keeps me coming back.

I've known about Charlie's my entire life, but this weekend was the first time I finally decided to give them a try. As others have mentioned, the burgers are SMALL. Knowing that, I went with two double cheeseburgers and even they were still kinda small. I got one with bacon just to give it a whirl, but it was pretty thin and didn't add much to the burger. As for the taste of the burgers, they were good. I'd still prefer going a few hundred feet to Nifty Fifty's if I had to choose between them, but they were pretty tasty and juicy. I also tried a hot dog for the sake of variety. They serve it on a burger bun which is different, but probably not in a good way. The taste of the dog was still good though and I suppose that's what matters most. The staff was young, but friendly and the experience was a positive one overall. I wouldn't say they're the best burgers in the area, but you can't go wrong here either.

I used to go to Charlies a lot when I was a kid & I recently went again for the first time in ages. I'm happy to report that like, EVERYTHING is the same. Same decor, same menu, etc. The only change seems to be the addition of bacon to the menu. (Oh that & the fact that they seem to be open on Tuesdays now.) I am happy to report though that you don't need the bacon. I ordered a couple cheeseburgers-- one with bacon & one without-- and the bacon, dare I say, added nothing. The cheeseburgers are so prefect on their own. I love getting it with onions, pickles & ketchup. So skip the bacon. Do get a shake though. I don't know what the secret is but the black & white shakes are the best I've ever had. Don't ever change, Charlie's!!

Best burger around, my 3 year old daughter no longer ask for a cheese burger, she just asks for Charlie's!

We were really excited to try this place after all the great reviews....Meh. The staff was very friendly and I could tell there were a lot of regulars at the counter, but I was underwhelmed. The burgers are thin and small, the cheese seemed waxy and tasteless. The shake was good but it wasn't anything I couldn't get at another burger place.

The best classic cheeseburger you'll find in the Philadelphia area, in a very homey, friendly and nostalgic place. Highly recommend mike shakes as well

Best Burgers in town! These babies are delicious, You can either eat in or do take out, If you eating in just sit right down and someone will ask you what you want. I go for the double ham (Double Hamburger), The short order cook starts making your burgers. Another worker takes your drink order. The milkshakes are delicious. Then they ask you what condiments you will be having on your burger, ' The menu is on the wall make sure you look it over. The workers here can be short tempered but the burger is worth it. I have been coming here for years and I still believe its better then 5 guys and all other chains. Make sure you have cash as they do not accept plastic. My tip to you is do takeout and then go grab some fries up the street at Nifty Fifties and you have the perfect meal!

Best burgers by far. Greasy spoon with great shakes and minimalist menu. Bring cash, credit cards not accepted.

Wasn't quite what I expected. People raved and I thought the burgers must be made from the Zeus or something. Nope. Just regular ol White Castle ish burgers. Did they forge to add the special Zeus sauce or something? I wanted this to be amazing.

Great burgers. Definitely go with the double burgers. They do them well, but a larger menu would be nice.

Awesome family run burger shop 10 minutes from PHL. Simple menu. Burgers are great for being so minimalist. I got some kind of special with grilled onions & cheese. Dirt cheap too. What must be the families' kids are working the joint. Very courteous and hard working. You don't find places like this much anymore.

I've traveled to many parts of the country and the world; and still have yet to find another burger as good as Charlie's! The presentation is simple: a tasty burger with no gimmicks, that will blow your mind! The price also can't be beat. I brought my mom in there a couple weeks back. I was able to buy us both doubles and large milkshakes for under twenty bucks! I've been going there for 25 years, and will continue to do so forever!

This place is aight.. you get aight service and aight food. Nothing to brag about but I could see they have some loyal customers. I have to say though the atmosphere in the place was a little on the weird side. I thought I was walking into a dive bar in the beginning. I almost went back out to recheck the sign.. in case I went to the wrong place. Damn google map right.. it makes mistakes sometimes. So after I put my serious face on.. I had to quickly think about what I wanted cause I could tell they don't take sh!t in this place. To my surprise, they were friendly. Luckily for me there wasn't a line behind me so I wasn't too pressured. So I placed an order for two hamburgers, one grilled cheese, one hot dog and two shakes. I think the bill came out to be like close to $30 or mid $20 at least. I was a little surprised by the price cause I don't know if I felt like I was getting what I paid for kind of a feeling after I ate. For example, I ordered a hot dog for my daughter and they put the hot dog on some hamburger buns. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich for my other daughter and they made it on hamburger buns. I know this is a hamburger joint but really? It doesn't hurt to get some different types of bread. Maybe they don't EVER get those orders but if you have it on your menu, you should incorporate and apply the "correct" procedures.... no? Maybe they're being progressive and I'm just old fashioned? Who knows... I just want a simple hot dog and grilled cheese if you don't mind lol. I wouldn't be surprised if you ordered grilled cheese and you end up with a hamburger buns with wiz on it lol. So considering you get better than fast food chain burgers and shakes, I would say it's worth a try but the price factor alone would keep me from going back. I will update this if I go back but I'm not sure when that'll be since I don't live nearby.

This is what you have been waiting for! Charlie's has been around for decades! They are the original Charlies and have only one store. Charlie's has been a staple in my life for over 20 years...I have had hundreds of these burgers in my time and absolutely LOVE them. Small, greasy burgers with Velveeta cheese melting in the greasy goodness. Very simple recipe for success, they don't even have lettuce, much less french fries. I believe they grind the beef in the back and make their own patties, which again, are very small. But they are so delicious! I normally grab 3-5 with a chocolate shake...Then some to go(30 seconds in the microwave and they are like new again!) On a nice summer day the line can stretch out the door...there is seating inside for maybe 20 people, but its tight around the counter and you can often find people eating in their car in the parking lot. The menu is limited...Hot dogs, burgers, grilled cheese...Toppings include relish, onions(raw or fried), pickles, mustard and ketchup. Again, no lettuce...I didn't come here for a salad anyway! And again, no fries or onion rings...grab a bag of Herr's chips if you need something with it... Tips: CASH ONLY! NO CARDS! get in line and don't get out. If someone asks you what you want tell them what you want to drink and how many burgers you want. You can also mention cheese at this time, but wait to mention the other toppings. They will ask you what you want on them when they are done cooking. They are small! I've eaten 7 in my youth, but find 3-4 does the trick these days. If you are sitting at the counter order one...when you are finishing up, order another one...when you are finishing that get another one to go! Pros: hand scooped vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry Ice cream served in a BIG SILVER CUP when you dine in. Shakes to go don't get the silver cup, but you still get 20+ oz of shake. Buns: plain unassuming buns don't distract from the delicious burger. They also lightly toast them on the grille. freshly ground beef patties! Cons: On my most recent visit my chocolate shake had a bit too much milk in it...but it was still delicious! Normally I like to struggle to get it thru the straw... Never have I seen anyone wearing gloves...altho there is a big bottle of purel by the register...That doesn't keep me from going back! Or even detracing a star! The employees can get really slammed on a busy day...sometimes they act like they have been slammed, but be patient and they will take care of you! Now open 7 days a week! If you get there late be warned...some days they run out of beef or buns and close early...

Best cheeseburgers. I got the special and the regular cheeseburger. All fantastic. Of your going to eat in it's a little small but people are awesome and it's a great place. I don't think you can go wrong with anything you get.

Yum. Our family favorite and once a week treat. Our family has been going to Charlies since it was in Springfield. Always want another before you finish first. Great shakes. Not the cheapest around but always go back for more. They are not big, fancy burgers but they are very tasty. Best burgers around!

Cool small throw back place. I understand nostalgia, tradition and local pride...and that's the only way I can understand the rave reviews of this place. The burgers are nothing special, they really just taste like a basic fast food style burger. The burgers are very small and they don't have lettuce which is strange. Although the bathroom is very clean, the counter guy handles money and then dunks his bare hands into the pickles to add to the burgers without washing. Kinda gross.

Simple. Some of the most simple, tasty burgers I've ever eaten. I ordered two cheeseburgers and a strawberry milkshake and couldn't get everything in my mouth fast enough. While finishing the second burger I contemplated ordering a third. I made the trek from Jersey and it was definitely worth it.

Well look, I'm nothing if not fair. My first review of them a year and a half ago deducted a star because of the whole "Closed on Tuesday" thing. It was always a historical quirk about them that I never quite understood. Just one of those things that you just accepted about the place. So now, that they've removed that restriction, I need to be fair and give them their star back, don't I? Well, I'm not giving them the star back because of that. I'm giving them the star back because based on a recent visit here with my wife, I was reminded why Charlie's is so special. It was her first time here, and they converted her. The way these burgers taste, you really do forget that for what you get they're actually a little highly priced. Basically, I really don't mind giving Charlie's a few more shekels for, their burgers because they're just that damn good, especially if you get a double. Plus, it had been a long time since I had a black and white shake here. After grabbing one on my last visit, I gotta say that it is the most basic shake you can get, yet for some reason it really works well here with the burgers. I swear, even though you may feel guilty about indulging here for a while, something about the food here just does your soul well! At least it does for me. i can't eat here but once in a while, because if I ate here everyday I'd be in the hospital with clogged arteries. But that once in a while is so damn memorable!

This is the spot. No fries? Who cares? No healthy options? Who cares? No happy meals? Who cares? Burgers, baby! Little delicious, cheesy, hot burgers! Oh, and hot dogs, chips, sodas and milkshakes that you'll suck down regardless of how full you are and then sit there in a food coma for seven hours. This place has been in business for almost 90 years because they know what they do best and they stick to it. No gimmicks. No flair. You can't even get your burgers to go in a normal bag; they just throw them in a burger bun bag and you're good to go! I know some complain that the burgers are small, which they are, so make sure you order 2 or more along with a black & white shake. Even throw some bacon on them if you want to get wild! The staff is super friendly. The prices are pretty fair (more expensive than McDonald's or Wendy's, but far better). If you want no BS with your burger & shake, this is your spot.

  • Kevin R.

Don't share the shake...get your own. My wife and I decided to stop by Charlie's after hearing about this institution from many, many people. This area must be burger central because it seemed like you can find a burger place on every block. Ignore the rest and pull into Charlie's. Simple yet yummy burgers are offered up single or double, the burgers are kind of small so order a couple. I believe I perfected the topping choices by not having any... the plain double cheeseburger is simple perfection. We shared a black and white shake...as soon as the shake touched my lips I realized I made a horrible mistake....I should have got my own. Burgers, shakes, no fries, and cash only, Charlie's has got simplicity down to a science.

Perfect old school burgers. I just love the hole in the wall feel. Reminds me so much of how McDonalds use to be when I was a kid. A tastebud time machine that should not be missed.

There is a reason why they've been in business for 100+ years... It's because their food is that good. Service is okay when slow but when busy expect a Ginos or Pats kind of service. Those local will know what I'm talking about (wink wink). My only wish is that they bring back mini-golf! What fun we used to have as kids going there eating and playing around of mini-golf afterwards.

Consider this my 5-year-old daughter's first Yelp review: "That burger was so good it made my belly want another one even though my belly knew it shouldn't have another one."

I am a burger fanatic. I've had them at every hot spot. This is top 2 in the country. West coast east coast I've had them all. This place is no joke. Please do yourself a favor try it. P.S. It's cheap. $15 3burgers and a Pepsi.

Burgers. Yummy. Burgers... What else can I say...Been going there for over 20 years and they never disappoint...they have some of the best, simple, old school burgers I have had...grilled right, perfect crunch to the bun after grilling it too...go. Get a charlies... Shakes rock too.

  • Chris S.

I don't get it, must be a Delco thing. It wasn't good quality meat, very small and yellow cheese product. What's to love? I gave them an extra star because I like small businesses but I don't get this one at all....

A little overpriced for the value, but the hamburgers are the best of any fast food place in the area. The milkshakes are delicious.

Charlie's hamburgers is a traditional burger stand, the kind that used to dominate before fast food chains took over nearly every roadway in the US and the world. And for this simple nostalgic reason, I'd probably like Carlie's even if they served up mediocre food. But the burgers here are great. The grill man is a master. If you watch closely, you'll see him with a large slab of beef in one hand while picks off perfectly sized blobs and places them on the grill. The buns are also toasted on the griddle. I ordered the two special burgers, the bunny special (tomato, lettuce, raw onion, pickles and cheese, and the Charlie special (fried onions, pickles, and cheese). The patties are on the small side, so I recommend ordering a double if you like a heavy meat to bun ratio. The food isn't amazing, the beef is average, but the Charlie's serves up a gooey, messy burger that truly satisfies. The two burgers I ordered came out to just over $5. I've heard the milkshakes are good, but I can't bring myself to pay for them at $4.35. They don't have a deep fryer, so there aren't any fries. This place looks more like someone's living room with an indoor grill than a restaurant. It's small, there's lots of locals, but the staff will quickly take care of you and get you fed. If you get the burgers to go, they come in little wax paper sacks, which I found oddly charming. Bottom Line: It's a bit outside of the city, but if you're headed to/from the airport, it's not that far out of the way. It's a classic American burger stand, and I like it simply for that. But the burgers also hit the spot. Closed Tuesdays.

Hands down the BEST burger you will eat within a 50 mile radius! It's unfortunate that its such a far drive from where I live or I would most likely be eating these delicious burgers EVERY. DAMN. DAY. You don't even need to chew these burgers, they literally melt in your mouth. The beef is just indescribable. Don't even get me started about how their cheese complements the entire burger. I hope I'm not the only one who gets chills from food but if you know what I mean, this place delivers. The buns are lightly toasted and crunchy on the ends. I really couldn't understand why anyone who has never tried this place could even think TWICE about going. Greatest burger I ever had the pleasure of eating.

  • Jenna P.

This place is awesome I love that everything is made on hamburger buns. It's like backyard BBQ type food, who doesn't love that? It's nothing fancy and the menu is small but it's a great place to get a quick bite to eat.

Welp what can I say? Charlie's made me a fan! My father told me about this place last year & we kinda left it at that. Fast-forward to November or December, and here we (me & mister) are, at Charlie's , EXCITED as all hell. First off this is a gem!!! It's in the cut and if you don't pay attention, you might pass it. We ordered 4 total (2 with pickle, cheese, ketchup and 2 with mayo and cheese) He tossed our burgers in a hamburger bun bag and we were outta there! I love the whole vibe. The owner (guessing??) was so nice and friendly! But back to the matter at hand, these burgers must have crack in them because once you have one bite, you want to 5 more and you haven't finished what you ordered initially. You're hooked off the rip. They are soo good! Came back one night amd he was closed for the holidays :-( we ended up at Zac's. Another story for another time :-/

Small, greasy and no frills, but UNBELIEVABLE burgers. The only complaint is they are a bit small for the price, but I'll take that trade-off as Charlie's has the best burgers in the area, hands down (and that gives me an excuse to eat 2 - 3). Although there are some incredible places downtown for a burger (Village Whiskey, Rouge, etc), this Delco institution is second to none.

Yesterday we drove from home which is 34.7 miles 45-60 minutes drive for the best Burgers in the Philadelphia area. Always great tasting, friendly service. I always have two Cheeseburgers and wife has one, we both had small Pepsi's. $11.00 Quick service, $2.90 a burger may seem high for people brought up on McDonald's meatless burgers, but well worth it. I've been going here for at least 35 yrs and their original location before that. VERY TASTY, Can't wait for our next visit.

Place is great, wish they took credit, I would've bought more burgers! They toast the inside of the bun so it has some crunch, the cheese melts inside to the burger patty and the onions are chopped do thin, it all blends so well. The burgers are thin but pack a mighty punch! I also enjoy the nostalgia of their popeye's Wimpy slogan!

    (4)
  • Marie S.

My favorite burgers in PA. Small so 2 is the norm for a girl, 3-4 for a guy. Obviously 5 guys and wimpy's are awesome too, but this little place is unique. Super simple. Just plain yummy. They only have chips, no fries. And great milkshakes. This place looks like it never left the early 60's, time warp, and the burgs are old fashioned GOOOOD.

  • Arielle J.

Delicious burgers! I got two cheeseburgers and a B&W milkshake for myself, the bf got three burgers with bacon, onions and relish. The reviews gave me such high hopes and Charlies did not let me down. My cheeseburgers were just what I was hoping for...smaller in size but greasy, cheesy and hot. It reminded me of a cheeseburger you'd get at McDonalds, except way way way better in quality and taste. The milkshake was good, but I didn't think it was worth the price at $4.75. I'm more of a chocolate milkshake kinda gal so maybe I'll get that next time instead of B&W. Me and my bf will for sure be coming back for some cheap but heavenly little burgers asap.

This place has always been my favorite burger shop, as I have gone there for years. My visit today was a disappointment, and ill probably catch heat for this. For the first time for me, there were women behind the counter and they were a mess. The chick on the grill acted like everything was a pain in the ass and the other girls couldn't get the orders right. We had to repeat our order several times. And they forgot to place our order for more burgers. The burger patties were also about half the size they normally were. I feel that Charlie's is skimping on the meat. Up your game Charlie's!

Awesome burgers, small, so go with double cheeseburger. Shakes were good too. Wish they had fries, but easily a once a week burger place for me if I lived there. Great burgers!

Ok so I have been thinking about this and I know everyone has "their burger place" you know...the one where THE BEST BURGER lives...well 'lil ol charlies is mine and I realize not everyone is going to agree and I'm ok with that - just more Moooooo for me =) It literally is a lil wood building built on top of a trailer basically, it can't be more than 650 sq ft. -including the storage area. But, you have to know good food comes out of this place especially if it can still get a line out the door after being open for at least 25 years...maybe longer...i just can remember 25 =) Let me set your expectations first timers... Burgers = small and thin Buns = small, thin and grilled Burger + Bun = Seasoned amazing-ness with a melted cheese creamy heaven-ness flooding your taste buds. Maybe they don't wash the grill and it's years of phenomenal-ness soaked in? Shakes = Not enough room in my stomach to inhale how much my taste buds are feining. I inhaled 3 burgers for a snack today and it was just riveting. Everything about it was just so good. I have attached the photos of my experience. Everyone that used to work there when I was 10 is still there and in GREAT moods. They have to love their job because they are still cooin and serving with smiles. This place is so awesome that they don't even order bags for take out orders...they use the burger bun bags, awesome! I have a feeling no matter what burger crosses my path during the rest of my life...Charlie's will always be #1 =)

For a yucky looking run down, sort of creepy from the street looking place, Charlie's certainly has a lot of raving reviews. I had to find out why. Upon entering I sat down (counter type only) to find my waitress to be a tattooed over neck, sort of dead, sunken eyed, totally expressionless person, who to be frank about it, sort of gave me the creeps, as did a few of the over tattooed patrons; pretty much what you would expect in a rehab ward. When cheeseburger with everything arrived I was horribly disappointed. It was barely bigger or thicker than the McDonald's cheapest. I even thought about not eating, just paying and leaving, but I'm glad I didn't. To my delightful surprised that yucky little looking cheeseburger packed some of the best flavor I've ever had in a burger; hence I'd be happy to return for the food and to tell you truth I really didn't mind the dive-y atmosphere of the place.

If every dilapidated shack on the side of the road churned out food this good, the fast-food chains would go out of business. I don't even particularly like burgers, yet I'll go out of my way to grab 3 or 4 Charlie's Specials if I'm anywhere near this place. Charlie's has been around since before WWII, and the grille is now so well-seasoned I'd eat my shoe off that thing. They also still make milkshakes the old fashioned way so I always order a black and white.

Hamburger Chains. Burger Joints. A-OK. Yah, I'm A Fan. Woohoo! As good as it gets! Charlie's always been OK, for me for Years. In all the times at both locations: never seen or served by Tatoo'd women, thought flooring was tile? Another reason for me to go back! Charlie's Its a Joint! Nifty Fifty's is up the road if you want a chain Hamburger. somewhat of a Fan, never get another Charlie's, for another month or so? won't be the end of my (or The Solar Systems) World. Charlie's With Burgers as i remembered them, you can't eat just one, Right amount of grease, No Craftsmanship, as one Establishment brags. Pure Meat: Formed, Placed, sometimes thrown on the grill. Perfection. Charlie's Looking like the kind of place Lana Turner would have worked at. Gas Pumps, Cold Beer in Long Neck Bottles, NO! Sizzling Grills, YES! Your place, if other's don't get it...the more for you! Charlie's 'nuf said.

Great burgers and awesome shakes Reason for 3 stars price your paying $3 a burger for a burger that's smaller than a mickey D's or burger king dollar burger and no fryers in the place could use some frys or O rings to go wit my burger But great place a Delco land mark, and great burgers only drawback is you gotta order 3 or 4 of them

Read about this place in Philly mag for best burgers. It's a little off the beaten track for South Jersey but worth the venture. You pull up into their all asphalt parking lot shimmering from the heat and look at this teeny low-slung building and immediately you know this is either going to be awesome or awful. You go in and it's clearly favored by the locals. I think we were the youngest people there. The ordering process is a little confusing but the regulars were well versed. But it's like going back in time, and not in a Disney-esque Johnny Rockets or Nifty Fifties style, when there used to be burger joints all around. This is the real McCoy. If I had to guess, I would say it's the same place that'd been here since the 50s. Go, small business owners! Clearly a case of knowing what you do well and doing it. The menu is very limited. Don't bother coming here to eat healthy. But wow, the burgers are thin and tasty. The buns are thrown on the grill, which makes the sandwich warmer and adds texture. Pickles are old-school kosher dills. Honestly, you're not even gonna miss the fries. Shakes are served in the large metal cup from the shake machine with a thick ribbed plastic cup that reminded me of my childhood. Very smooth, no lumps, no icy bits. Will spread the gospel to others.

Maybe I just don't get what all of the hype is about here. I stopped in for a burger yesterday, and was nothing short of disappointed. When the slice of cheese is thicker than the burger itself, then something is seriously wrong. I have never had a burger like this before in my life. The only taste to this thing came from the lettuce, onions, and pickle... The staff in the other hand was great and friendly. Very nice people. Welcoming and helpful.

I don't think words can describe these super tasty burgers. I could have eaten a dozen of them, they are amazing!

This burger joint has been around forever. Last 2 times I have been there out-of-towners have driven from Chicago and Florida to get another taste of their food. Their special burger rocks: toasted bun, ketchup, onions, tomato and the most awesome cheese melted perfectly on a fresh burger( but you cant eat just one). Place looks like it hasn't changed much since it opened. Super nice staff. If you want fries, sorry. But who needs em with burgers as good as these?

Holy hell. I had been told about these burgers...and I just looked at the picture I uploaded of my Double Bacon Cheeseburger that I got last week, and I can't wait to get another one. I was told I was going to get my "delco passport revoked" since I had never been to Charlies...so my boyfriend took me there. I yelled at him after my first bite, "Why has it taken you two years to take me here?!" These burgers are fantastic, and the little bar to sit at is great. Their B&W milkshake was amazing. I actually have to end this review right now before I leave work and head to Charlies.....crap it's tuesday so they aren't open. I know what I'm getting for dinner tomorrow night, though. SO GOOD. You need to try it, it will blow you away. Absolutely freaking fantastic.

My absolute favorite burger place on Earth! The definition of a no frills, old school joint that . They don't even serve fries! I've been going here since I was about 3 yrs old, and I am completely in love. The burgers are small, more like sliders, so I usually get two doubles, or three to four Charlie's Specials (cheese, pickles, tomato and fried onion) or Bunny Specials (cheese, mustard, raw onions and tomato) and a black and white milkshake. The secret to the phenomenal burgers is clearly the griddle, which has been perfectly seasoned from decades of grilling beef and onions. I honestly can't believe they don't just double or triple the prices of everything on the menu because I'd gladly pay that, and judging from the crowds, so would everyone else.

Dad took me to Charlie's as a kid. Now I take my own kids. Hopefully they will take theirs. A Delaware county institution. The burgers melt in your mouth. The black and white shakes are to die for. No fries. Cash only. Cheap and great. Closed on Tuesdays.

Fred and Barney, Batman and Robin, Tango and Cash, Simon and Garfunkel , Burger and Fries. Some things just go together like Forrest and Jenny. I have made it 38 years, without seeing Burger without fries, but my trip to Charlies, ended that streak. I cant believe, no one brought it up, in any previous review. I am also a hypocritical ass, because one of my longstanding complaints about burger joints, is their lack of a choice other than fries. Yet somehow, actually entering a burger establishment , where fries arent an option , is jarring. Having just moved into the area, Im looking to try all the edible offerings, ridley has to offer. Id heard Charlies is a good burger joint, so I had to try it out. I pulled up to the small shack, ready to be wowed. Its not exactly an inviting facade, but this only told me that the burgers would be outstanding. Since it was early, there wasnt much of a crowd, so I was instantly on the spot. I guess their usual clientel knows exactly what they want, since i saw no form of menu in my line of sight. The woman at the counter was friendly, but I felt the pressure to order quickly. " Uh...ill have a burger?" - was i asking a question!!?? She only asked "cheese" or "plain" and when I said cheese, they went to work. Once I was more in tune with my surroundings, I noticed the menu board to my left. It was sparse, to say the least. Just burgers, an hot dog, grilled cheese and milkshakes. As stated, no fries. Im not even sure I wanted fries and i definitely dont need fries and in retrospect, I think its a bold move on Charlies part. This is obviously a place , that does what they want and doesnt kowtow to others expectations...and after being in business over 100 years, they dont need to. As i waited for my burger, i saw how they looked and wished i had got more or at least a double. I didnt want to change or add to my order, and risk looking foolish, so i played it cool, like " One burger Jim" meant to do that. I took my burger and split, and had it done before my cardoor shut. It was good, but not $2.50 good. There are too many good burger places out there now for Charlies burger to be special. Had I tried this a few years ago, I would have been in heaven. I would come again, if only to support this cool place. ill be better prepared next time and will order more burgers, to make up for no fries. We are, however, still a few negotiations away from being, Charlie and Jim.

The burger that defined my childhood. Okay, that might be a little extreme. But I love this place, and always will. Great burgers, good prices. The patties are small but incredibly flavorful. They keep it simple and I like it that way. The kind of place you wouldn't be surprised to see on a Food Network special about "famous" local food joints. There's nothing really exceptional that you can put your finger on that sets them apart... it's just a really freaking good burger. Get a milkshake while you're there too, they're awesome.

This little gem is an assembly line of awesomeness. But when it gets packed be prepared to sit a spell and enjoy the simple ambiance. Double cheese with everything is what to get backed with a black and white. Let the nay-sayers have their opinions it just means that there are more for the rest of us!

My son loves Charlie's but he's 14. I thought it was good but I can cook burgers like this at home so why go back? Grease does taste great! Black and white shake was excellent but won't bring me back unless my son really wants to.

Take the best burger you've ever had. Now throw that out the window because you're about to experience burger heaven. Charlie's is a burger joint. That's all they do. However, they do it well. The burgers are on the slim side, so make sure you order a double; they are super-addicting though. Like all classic Philly places, they have a process for ordering which must be followed. For first timers, a friend of mine offers these helpful rules for ordering, which I offer to you as a Public Service Announcement: 1. No one cares about your toppings. The initial order concerns how many burgers you want and whether or not you want cheese on them. Example: Charlies, "What would you like?" You, "Two cheese." (Step to the side) 2. In the event of a large group the spokesman will assess the total number of participants and then place one order for the group. 3. Select your beverage. Your choices are fountain sodas (why?), tap water (free), bottled water (charge), or a milkshake. Milkshakes options include: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, or the infamous Black and White. Shakes are delivered in their stainless steel mixing cup with a small frosted glass. 4. Toppings: Your choices include the following options: pickles, relish, onions, ketchup, bacon (extra charge), tomato (extra charge), or caramelized onions (extra charge). Shortcuts: Loaded: Pickles, relish, ketchup, and raw onions Bunny: Mustard, raw onion, and tomato Charlies Special: pickles, tomato, fried onions 5. They do not accept debit/credit...you must have cash, or they will refer you across the street to the local CVS. 6. To order the exact same thing once you have finished your meal, simply ask for a cheese or no cheese repeat. 7. EAT UNTIL YOU HAVE A CHEESEBURGER BABY GROWING INSIDE YOU. Charlies used to be closed on Tuesdays. (If you don't understand why, review this video: youtube.com/watch?v=NJ6x… ) This is no longer true, as Charlie's is open on Tuesdays. THAT IS ALL.

Referred by a friend...pulled up and wasn't too sure about the place. We each ordered a double cheeseburger with ketchup and pickles. The burgers were tiny but two patties made it a good size. The toasted bun and very melty cheese made for the perfect bite. We each ordered a second they were so good. Nothing fancy but if you just want good burgers this is your place! Oh and we topped our visit off with a black and white milkshake made with hard ice cream. Yum.

Really wanted to like this place, but can't give it more than three stars. The hamburgers are pretty good. The meat is fresh and so are the toppings, but when the food is handled by hands that touch money and cell phones right in from of you it just doesn't taste the same. In fact, it's pretty unsanitary and almost disgusting. In NYC this would close the place down. On the other hand, this milkshakes are great and i would go back there to have them. The service is also very courteous and prompt.

I'm embarrassed that I didn't make it to Charlie's up until a month ago, considering I've lived in Delaware County nearly my entire life. There's been a couple of places where I've thought I had the best burger ever. Charlie's now holds that title. The black and white milkshakes are amazing as well. Can't wait to go back.

If you go here it may ruin your life. You may crave these burgers all day every day. The intense cravings for these amazing burgers come randomly, unexpectedly and are unexplainable. I typically think about them around 9 am sometimes and when that happens my lunch is set in stone. I don't have the power to eat anywhere else. Charlie's takes over my life. I usually get 3 to 4 burgers with fried onions and ketchup and a black and white shake. They are both equally delicious. The menu is simple. Hamburger - around $2.50. not too sure why they exist....i understand lactose intolerant people Cheeseburger - around $2.75 a pop. Small but packed with flavor. Small, meaning the average guy will probably need 3-4 and average girl puts down 2-3. Amazing Velveeta-like cheese (trust me). Melts in your mouth. Favorite burger out there. They JUST got bacon in recently so get after it. Hot dog - $2.00 never had one because hot dogs don't thrill me. Im assuming naïve children are the only ones that eat these. Don't worry they will grow and learn that the burger is the way to go. Milkshakes - $4.50 good size. Probably 16 oz. Basic flavors. Black and white all day. Good consistency. Not too thick or too thin. Bring your own fries because they don't serve em. Disclaimer - Prices are guesses but I feel like they are pretty accurate.

So I don't write many reviews, but after eating at this place, I felt like I needed to. I was in town at a conference, and after dinner plans fell through, I figured I'd try something off yelp. Reviews clearly said the place was small, run down, but had great food. Since I'm always looking for a diamond in the rough, figure I'd give it a shot. Place is small, certainly run down, only has a dozen chairs, the menu only has basic burgers with basic toppings, and milkshakes, no fries...what you see is what you get. I ordered 2 burgers with cheese, fried onion, tomato, pickles and ketchup. The girl ringing up my food also puts the pickles on my burger...no gloves, just her bare fingers putting pickles on my burger. BUT, all that aside.....it was one of the BEST burgers I EVER had! I even considered ordering 2 more to bring back to my room. The staff was super friendly and fast, and althoughI question some of the health practices, I would go back there in a heart beat and I'm trying to figure out if I can get back there at some point before I leave town. If your in town and want some cheap great tasting burgers...you have to try Charlie's! P.S. Burgers are on the small side so you have to get 2 to make it a regular size burger, but after you finish the second, you"ll want a 3rd because they are so good.

"Much better than 5 Guys?" Absolutely. Have people that rant and rave about Five Guys really never have a burger beyond McDs or BK before? The Five Guys phenom is more about a very good marketing machine than a good burger. Ok, enough of that rant. Charlies is the perfect greasy, cheesy, onion-influenced soft bun burger out there. If you are a Philadelphian or one by proxy, Charlies is a "MUST GO". Mmm, sorta getting hungry now just thinking about it...

The burgers were super yummy and not super greasy. The staff was friendly and let you pay at the end which is nice. My only complaint is that it's pretty expensive for a burger/slider joint. This place has a reputation and is famous among anyone who's ever taken a bite of their burgers. It's certainly worth a visit at least once in your life.

There is a small, evil part of me who really wants to give Charlie's 1 star and a terrible review just so you won't go there and find out about it's goodness. It isn't really big enough to handle the over-capacity of being popular among more folks then the few who are "in the know". But then I realize that it's not fair, Charlie's is awesome and still kinda hard to find and if you make the effort to get yourself there then you deserve to experience the aforementioned goodness. Charlie's is king of the mini-burger (NOT the slider!) but the mini-burger. Think McDonald's-esque burger size, only this burger actually tastes good and someone paid more than about 7 cents wholesale for the raw ingredients. Also, since you've made all that effort to experience Charlie's you might as well also have a black & white while you're there. It's as good as the freakin' burger! Ok, now for the incidentals; -Charlie's is a tiny, blue collar hole in the wall (don't expect any frills or wait service cause it ain't happening). -no french fries! -you want a double cheeseburger loaded -when the beef runs out they call it a night. That said, if you happen to be sitting there around 9pm finishing your burger and the man points at you to indicate his interest in you ordering another and you in fact want another: this is your moment, don't let it pass you by because that could very well be the last burger of the night and you NEED to seize the opportunity and make it yours. -closed on Tuesdays

My dad grew up eating Charlie's, and so did I. He called them sliders long before Chili's was making shitty mini-burgers, but he called them sliders because of the way "they just slide out of your ass after you eat 'em." I know that sounds terrible, but push the image of the literal shitstorm out of your mind and listen to me: If God existed, and he was a cheeseburger, this would be it. THIS, right here. The Virgin Mary would be the black & white milkshake.

One of my favorite places in the world. Love the old school feel and the honor system when eating in. Don't bother asking for fries because they don't do fries or many other items for that matter, but they make outstanding burgers and the best milkshakes anywhere. The black and white is a must! It has a Seinfeld soup nazi kind of feel and you should avoid placing your drink order with the grill guy and your food order with the drink guy because it is frowned upon. The burgers are thin, so be prepared to eat a few, but they are so so good. As of this summer, they were open on Tuesdays for the first time ever, so now they're there 7 days a week except for when you pop in and find they went on vacation for a week :( In my opinion, best burgers around. Better than Zack's, Five Guys, and Wayback and a really cool feel to the place.

I heard about Charlies through a co-worker. I finally decided to check it out. The burgers melted in my mouth! Delicious! I ordered four of them. They are a little on the small side, and I was hungry, so there you go. I believe that tomatoes cost a little extra as a topping. The black and white milkshakes are thick & cold, served in a frosted silver mixer. The service was a little on the slow side, and the person who took my order forgot my milkshake, so I had to re-order it. Other than that, I loved it and will be back when I'm in the mood for a great burger. I would argue that this place has a much better burger than Five Guys. Oh, yeah, and they're open on Tuesdays now!

If not for the great reviews on Yelp, this is definitely not a restaurant I would have ever visited. The place is off the main road, tiny, and looks like a real dive. I'm glad we didn't let that scare us away because this place has real character and charm. There was a continuous flow of people in and out the entire time we were there. If you go, you'll have burgers or a grilled cheese because that's all they offer. The burgers are small so we each ordered two and that was good for me but I think hubby could have gone for another. It's a cheap, easy, casual meal that you must pay for with cash - no credit cards accepted!

I've been craving a burger for the last couple of days, and since I'm in am area where a few establishments claim to have the best burgers, i figured I'd try Charlie's first. I went on a Sunday, and they don't open until 1:00 in the afternoon. But still, I don't believe that prevents any of the regulars from stopping by to pick up lunch. There was a kid in front of me that looked like he just rolled out of bed. No, I'm quite sure he had just rolled out of bed. Burgers must be good then when you decide not to bother to brush your hair down. I was a mess too, sue me. I ordered a cheeseburger, which was served to me promptly. Now, I don't feel that this place is easy on the eyes inside. So, I'll probably take my burger with me, like I did today. It's a bit dated looking to me in the eating area. I got home and the burger was good. From the reviews, I thought that their burgers were very small, but in the end, I'm glad I only ordered one. The size was good enough for me. To sum up, I'll go back for my burger craving again. They only take cash, by the way

I'm a huge fan of the classic burger; the old-school burger from the days before trying to fit an entire ground cow between two loaves of bread became the rage. Get a small slab of ground beef, fry it hard so it gets a little crispy, and throw on the classic mustard, pickles, and raw onions. That's what these guys do, and they do it to perfection. Actually, they have a few more toppings, but they do it right. My burger was not swimming in toppings. They were a compliment to the burger, not the attraction. Definitely worth a detour on the way back to Cleveland and over-stuffing myself after just eating lunch. I think I could have ordered 5 had I known how could they would be. Sadly, the vanilla milkshake tasted remarkably similar to a McD's milkshake. But who cares, the burgers are awesome.

Visiting my uncle I wanted to find a place special to his side of town and boy oh boy did I find some place special! About a block down from this little joint is a place with a sign that says best burgers in town. After eating at Charlie's all I can do is laugh at that. Charlie's has to have one of the best hamburgers I have ever had. Top of the line and simply put, amazing! The place I guess has been around for 100 years. There is a picture with the words been around 100 years hanging in a corner. The grill must be super seasoned because I could not believe how good it was when I put it in my mouth! I ate a double cheeseburger and since it's kind of small, I ate another. I also had a chocolate shake with that and oh wow! It was a real shake with real ice cream and it was soooooooooo good!!! This place is worth going to, no matter where you live, down the street or in Texas like me. I'm still in disbelief at how amazing those burgers were...I want, no... I need to go back!

Best black and white milkshake ever! Their burgers are amazing as well and I love how they reuse the burger roll bags as their take out bags. Limited seating inside and closed on Tuesdays.

Best burgers ever. Waaaay better than 5 guys or zac's. The only downfall is that they don't have French fries. Tip for ordering: don't bother telling then what you want on your burgers, they will ask you when the burgers are ready to be served. If you are looking for a good cheeseburger or milk shake this is definitely the place.

So sad. Perhaps we have very different tastes in burgers - but this was NOT good eats for us. We were driving to the airport and made a special detour to try to find this place (and it was NOT easy - google maps parked us in a residential neighborhood). The hassle was not worth it. It was small and greasy and really quite tasteless. We were sorely disappointed. Even though we were still hungry, we were eager to get out of this little shack and search for food elsewhere.

I'm not really sure what to say here other than this was the smallest burger I've ever had. It was about the size of a slider from white castle for 2.50 so I was severely underwhelmed. It was literally like an 8th of an inch thick. From what I could tell, it tasted good but it was hard to tell since it was mostly bun. The staff was indifferent. All I had was two burgers so that's all I can judge this place on. I won't be back.

This place has a big following. Little white building with a counter and a few seats at the window facing out. Burgers, fries and shakes-no pizza, no hoagies. I 've also eaten hot dogs here. The burgers are small but very inexpensive-made right on a grill in front of you. If you take out they use the plastic roll bags to pack your order. This place was recycling before it became the hot thing. The burgers are the best I've ever eaten.

  • Samantha H.

Hands down best burger I've ever gotten. A tiny little eatery just off of the great Macdade with a huge sign that can't be missed. Step inside and while the menu is short and the place is spare, Charlie's is one of those gems that make finding local places worth it. Delicious and tiny burgers packed full of flavor. I like mine with the toppings piled high, but I'm sure a plain would be plenty tasty too. Of course, if you want to make it worth the time then a minimum of two is required. And a milkshake while you're at it, I recommend the black and white. It seems like the kind of place that could have some elitist way of ordering, but instead the service is fast and understanding. Definitely somewhere more people need to know about and appreciate, just don't go on a Tuesday.

I'm writing this review in retrospect, I don't eat meat now but, Charlie's was still a bangin' burger. They do make grilled cheese for your veggie friends who want to turn a blind eye to the fact that it's made on the same grill as the burgers. My Dad used to buy Charlie's all the time when I was growing up. It was the most honest burger around, seriously, no crap. They don't offer extras, it's more like meat, cheese, and bun. They put your take out order in the empty bun bags (reusing before it was hip). I don't remember having shakes from here but I'm assuming they would be pretty delicious, because it was simple. The atmosphere of Charlie's was simple, it wasn't ever a cluttered hang out. They used to close for a couple months out of the year, the owner would go to Florida, I'm not sure what months it was and even if they close anymore.

FAB greasy burgers and shakes. I still remember the first time I went here with my dad. What memories!! It's a little building off the road that looks like nothing special but oh so special it is. The burgers are slighly on the smaller side so order a few and don't forget a black and white milkshake.

So, I lived in Prospect Park for 18 years of my life. Charlies was always on the potential lunch/dinner menu. Small but delicious burgers, great shakes, and huge lines. It's been around for far longer than I've been alive. My dad and his brother used to go there as kids. It's a Delco institution. If you're in the area, head behind the Sovereign Bank and look for the little shack known as Charlies. It's great.

When you walk into Charlie's for the first time you're shocked by the austerity of the surroundings: grill (check), stools (check), register (check), seating counters (check). Yes, that's it. But who needs ambiance when Charlie's serves up the most amazing hamburgers in all of Delaware County? Look for the white shack tucked behind the garish Frontier Saloon on Kedron, down the block from Nifty Fifty's. There's nothing more to say but yum.

  • Carolyn M.

I'm not a burger person, but I will put down a burger (or two...or three....) from Charlie's no problem. And the milkshakes are spectacular. The place has been there for a million years so they must be doing something right! It's a tiny little trailer-esque joint, but you won't be disappointed. Check them out immediately.

Serving fatty awesome-ness, one burger at a time. The other day I was craving a burger for lunch so I stopped by Charlie's for a fix! Charlie's is a little place but this doesn't stop the masses from swinging by in droves for a little fatty bit of heaven. There is not much to say about ambience and decor in this place. There are a couple stools up at the counter around the kitchen area and then a few more by the windows. This isn't a place for large groups at all. There isn't music, but the sound of sizzling burgers on the grill and the occasional slurping of milkshakes, is quite entertaining. I had two hamburgers. Yeah I was sort of a pig that day. But hey, if I'm going to die of a fat attack, might as well go down with a full stomach. Anyway these burgers aren't massive, just the right size. So eating 2 or even 3 won't kill anybody. They aren't the best I have tasted, but I don't know, you just can't stop after one bite, and as soon as you know it, you are done. The shakes are awesome. The black and white is by far my fav. They make your shake right away when you order. So you might find yourself polishing off your shake before you even get your food. It's that good. So if you dont mind the blah-ness of this hole in the wall, I assure you the burgers will keep you coming back!

very nasty !! I have been going to Charlie's for 20 years and never seen such nasty habits going on !! The crew was having their dinner , (pizza) eating it in front of everyone in the resturant and talking away food flying out of their mouths!! The nasty part was no one washed their hands after they ate their food with their hands . They go on to touch the food and rolls they are cooking!! . I had to leave and won't be back . that was disgusting! I understand everyone has to eat but go in the back and WASH!!

If you're in the area this place is a must. I make it a habit of visitng everytime i go back home to PA. The burgers are thin but melt in your mouth. I love the cheese they use and the buns are always perfectly toasted. I fill up on a few burgers and a black and white milkshake, its amazing.

Wow, this place makes a truly amazing burger. The burgers aren't big but you can get 'em as doubles. I got them with everything on them too which I believe included relish.

Blue collar joint that just does burgers and shakes. Can't even get fries! Tasty for sure and the Charlie's special is pretty awesome. Make sure you get at least 2 burgers as they're thin. And don't bring a big group if you want to eat in.

I understand the nostalgia behind a place like this. Its not supposed to knock your socks off. Decent burger, and milkshake. However my only suggestion the pickles reminded me of sour McDonalds pickles. I havent eaten at a McDonalds in years but those friggin pickles. This place is worth a shot if your in the area!

Started coming here with the ol' grandma back when I was just a little fat kid, now that I'm a slightly trimmer adult I still love it. The burgers are greasy as all get-out and the buns are warmed on the grill. Condiments are applied by the spoonful. The burgers are a little small and compared to fast food places a little pricey but definitely worth it. Like the others have said you're going to want a shake to go with them. It's a small place so it's not where I'd take a bunch of friends but you can always do takeout. Overall I'd reckon the place comfortably fits 15-20 people. The most important thing to keep in mind is that Charlie's is closed on Tuesdays so plan accordingly otherwise you'll pull up to a dimmed building, an empty parking lot, and a heaping pile of disappointment.

I concur with Marcello D. Charlie's has the best fast-food style burgers you could ever hope to put in your mouth/belly. This is old-school burgery at its best. I'd honestly say it's worth a trip outside of the city just to grab some of this greasy goodness. Oh... make sure you get a milkshake too. Frikkin' amazing.

I love Charlie's. I have not had a burger that satisfies a grease and meat craving better. And who cares if the burgers are such small little cute affairs? Get 5 of them. Best $20 on burgers you could ever spend. I feel fortunate to have grown up so near to such an amazing eating establishment, and whenever I trek outside the city, even if it's to somewhere not even close to or in the same direction of Charlie's, I always want to make a detour to grab a couple burgers and a shake. And one day I will hit the MacDade Blvd home run and eat a Charlie's double burger, a Last Stand hot dog, an Anna's cheesesteak, and drink a Nifty Fifties milkshake all in one sitting. Then I will die.

One of my favorite burger joints. Burgers are small, so plan on ordering at least two.

Best burgers ever! I always go out of my way to hit up Charlie's on the way down to an Eagles/Phillies/Flyers game. Best black and white milkshake around as well. For all the Charlie's haters out there, get a grip. Go get yourself a gourmet burger at some chain. Charlie's is the real deal.

No frills burger guys that have been doing it forever and with any luck will keep going for as long as possible. Their milk shakes are classical and delicious. Worth the trip to the 'burbs.

Pretty stinkin tasty!! Went here tonite after a recommend from Marcello(thanks man!). I got the Charlie special, and a black and white. Only down side like fries, but the burgers are bangin, so who cares? These are so yummy! Get a couple, grab a BW, and get the fries somewhere else and go party in the park! Super quick and to the point! Love it and close to my place so thats a plus, when ya wanna get away from hoagies and pizza...;) Only stools to sit on but its all good. Decent prices and a great reward for after a good workout!!!

Charlies has always been an esstential to my fast food favorites. Getting two greasy burgers packed with delcious cheese and ketchup and a soda will always be a past time which I'll pass down to my kids, whenever I have kids. Don't get cravings on Tuesdays though, they're closed.

This was a blast from the past for me. I remember eating at Charlies in the 50s & 60s when it was at its original location in Springfield and my parents spoke fondly about Charlies having eaten there in the 40s. This location is very small, uncomfortably so. There are two counters. One faces the food preparation area and the other is a narrow counter along the front wall facing outside. Maybe, 20 people can sit on the stools provided at the counters. And, it is cramped as it is filled with people waiting to order or waiting for their order. Your choices of food are hamburgers single/double, cheeseburgers single/double or hot dog with ketchup, mustard, raw onions, grilled onions, pickles and relish. You have to ask for the condiments; because, they put them on for you. There are no french fries or onion rings. It's potato chips or nothing. Now to the food, the hamburgers and cheeseburgers are delicious, albeit very thin. Do yourself a favor, get the double. You won't be sorry. Of course, what makes the whole thing worthwhile is the black & white milkshake. They're made the old fashioned way with real ice cream and blended in the large stainless steel mixing cup. They give you the whole mixing cup filled with the best milkshake you can imagine. You have to try it at least once. It's quite an experience and the food is good.

After hearing/reading about all of the Charlie's hype, we decided to try it out for dinner tonight. First thought when I walked in was that I had entered some sort of county fair food stand, with the Styrofoam plates and lack of decor. We were greeted with true DelCo customer service, rude and unnecessarily cocky. We were unimpressed with the minimal menu and lack of french fries. I mean, how can you have a burger joint without fries?! As the cooks prepped the burgers, I was completely disgusted by the lack of glove use accompanied by the fake, acrylic nails. Food safety 101: Never touch food when wearing those germ vessels, especially when you're not wearing gloves. When it came to toppings, there was no lettuce... another burger staple. Left and immediately drove to Zac's, which is right down the street to order fries and a milkshake (and even considered getting another burger). When we finally got home to eat the burgers, we were thoroughly unimpressed with the thin, falling apart patties (just like McDonalds, but more expensive and the unexpected side order of rude customer service.) Take my advice: skip Charlie's and just head to Zac's. You'll be happier with the money you just spent.

The best burgers youll find anywhere. Ive been going here my whole life and never had one bad experience. .I also ate burgers at atleast 100 different places and not one has ever been close to or as good as charlies. They got a taste of their own. They should deff consider branching out. They would trample any fast food restaraunt or burger place and put them out of business. For the service. The same people been working there forever, and you can always expect good friendly service. Thanks for the great burgers. Keep up the great work.

A hometown favorite! The burgers are good, but the milkshakes are phenomenal. I don't know what they put in them, but the taste is like no other. I'm so glad this place is not a franchise or chain...having just a single location makes it all the better! There were rumors a few years ago that this place might close or move. I really hope that doesn't happen, at least not for a long long time. This place is a much better choice than Zak's or 5 Guys. About a block away, Nifty Fifty's milkshakes are good too, yet I'm surprised they don't deep-fry them, like they do everything else in that place. I swear those people would deep-fry the napkins if they could find someone hungry enough to sell em' too!

I live over an hour away and will drive there just for there Bruges and shakes . Why only burger and shakes because it also no stinking french fries :-) A must try place

Quaint little burger shack, with not much to offer inside. The menu is limited, which usually means they have the mentality of "why do a hundred things okay when you can do one thing great?" This being their philosophy or not, they certainly don't adhere to it. The burgers were downright awful, flat little patties wedged inside a limp, tiny bun. I asked for EVERYTHING on mine, what I got was a sandwich with pickles, relish, and ketchup. How that equates to all the the available toppings, I don't know (I saw other customers with lettuce and tomatoes, is that not included in EVERYTHING?). The store itself is old, it's no frills, very cute. The service was quick also. I also ordered a strawberry milkshake that tasted more like a vanilla milkshake with the slightest bit of strawberry flavor. NEVER go here if you are hungry, unless you plan to order 4 burgers. Believe it or not, I think their hamburgers are smaller than McDonald's, and taste about the same. Five Guys is so much better, and that's a shame considering they are a chain.

This place is seriously addicting. When my wife first told me about it, I was like "It can't be that good. It's a burger." When I first looked at the burger, I said "Umm, this is like a McDonalds burger", but then when I first bit into the burger I was "WHOA! that is amazing!" The bun is crispy yet soft and the meat is greasy but yet so moist. I haven't eaten inside yet and only have eaten it after it's been sitting in a bag for a little, but if it's that good sitting in a bag, I can't imagine how good it'll be eating right off the grill. Overall - Can't wait to try it while sitting there. I'll have to try and go on an off peak time though if I want to grab a spot to sit. This place gets packed

4.5 stars I've been in delco for over 15 years and heard about this place many times but never had the urge to try until my friends confirmed that the burgers were good. As a newbie, I didn't know the procedure, which ended up being, order at counter, find a seat, eat, pay, roll out. Felt very neighborhoody, like old school delco which is welcoming. I didn't have an idea about the meat ratio but read other reviews that you'd need more than one burger. So I got 2 cheese. The gripe I have, the meat is a bit thin... So I should've ordered a double. Those on a low carb diet should go for a double meat. Do they offer a triple?? I didn't get to try the black and white which I'm sure would taste great. The burgers with everything were good. Nice, hot, fresh off the griddle. I'd consider it a nice snack to hold you over if you're going out drinking or going out to dinner. If you wanna make it a dinner, you will probably have to order at least 3 and a shake...

This is where God gets his burgers. ...and his black & white milkshakes. Some people don't "get" this place. I feel so sorry for them. This is my shortest Yelp review ever, because there is nothing more to say. If you see God while you're there, tell him I said "Hi"...

So good! The bread, oh the bread, is quite moist but yet has a nice crisp to the edges from the grill. Mmmm, mouth is drooling thinking about it. The burgers are made fresh and right in front of your face. They are small, so make sure you order yourself a few. I get it loaded with all their fixings (ketchup, tomato, pickles, onions, cheese, etc etc). Oh, and if you order to go, they use their bread bags as a to go bag. How cool is that?!? Love that this place is environmentally friendly. Service is great. Very friendly and very fast. They know what they are doing here. They have to, or they would not be able to keep up with the crowds. I've only been here twice so far and each time, the lines were crazy. Can't wait to go back!

Just left this spot, 5 stars because they satisfied exactly what I was looking for, a decent Burger, the right bread, and not center city pricing........they are not huge, but very tasty making u have to Buy 2 or 3........We will back

I don't get it. Smashed buns, thin patties and overwhelming quantities of ketchup. That is the burger experience. You need three burgers to fill you up and the total comes to much more than you would pay for one decent burger + fries at other gourmet burger chains. (They don't sell fries here by the way.) Must be the whole nostalgia thing that keeps this place so highly rated, because everything else is severely lacking.

The burgers are wonderful and that's important because that's all the only food they have. There are a lot of options to adapt your burger. You can get a milkshake or sodas to drink, but no there are no sides. It's great if you want a top notch burger but sometimes the wait can be rough.

This place has basically one of the best burgers you'll ever have--it's a family recipe of perfection and the milk shakes are amazing as well. Definitely worth the trip.

This place is great! The only negative I can give is that their burgers are small and delicious! It's a negative because I eat way more than I should and spend my money like its going out of style lol.

We decided to stop here for lunch one Saturday. The reviews were excellent on Yelp so we gave it a try. Being new to this restaurant we didn't know if you sit first, order, then pay or the other way around. I still don't think we did it right. lol Its definitely awkward when you first walk in. The food was not great. I was expecting so much more based on the reviews. The patties/buns are so smashed and small that you wonder if you even ate when you are finished. Definitely won't be back.

Charlie's is a small shack, but don't let that be deceiving of their homemade hamburgers. Their prices are spectacular, and also compared to other burger spots like Elevation Burger compete. Charlie's Burger meat is very tender, and the thick cheddar perfectly fits right on it. I could probably eat at least 7-8 in one sitting and it would cost about 16$, love this place.
