I like Zachels. Its a very cool "hole in the wall" type place. The fish sandwiches and onion sauce has to be top. This sandwich is huge and you can get the Fat Zachel which is enough to feed 2. The service can be bad at times though. However overall it's one of those places you have to go to if you're in the area.

We stopped in here for a late dinner on a Saturday night. We were with another family so it was a table of 9. I was with my wife and 3 daughters. Let me first say I go out of my way to eat the wings here. I seriously think they are Top 3 in Pittsburgh. My girls love the wings like I do so that was there pick. We got 2 dozen hot wings, the W and I shared a steak and cheese hoagie, and we got a fried zucchini appetizer. I did toss in some beers but considering the bill was less than $60 I think that is very affordable. The drawbacks are the place needs a serious updating or cleaning. The service last night was frustrating. I won't bash them but when a third of the dining room is full and my beer is empty and I'm eating hot wings? Come on!! The waitress was cool and I would never stiff anyone but pay attention. Plus the W waited for a water for 15 mins. As married men know...wives don't like to wait. Sorry about the pics. My kids were hungry and grabbing the food fast. Trust me these two plates were full!

I've been to Zackel's on a few occasions and it's always been pretty much the same. Went last weekend with another couple and sat in the bar area, which still permits smoking. Here are the pros: food is generally good and the portion sizes are excellent. My husband got a steak (think it was 14 or 15 oz.) for under $16. It came with a salad and two sides. I got wings and a side salad. Salad is iceburg lettuce, which I'm not a big fan of, but I expected it. My friends got seafood bisque and said it was great. Her husband was not a huge fan of his meal, but it was still a decent sized portion. The waitress was friendly and fairly attentive. For the cons: the place was under construction, the bar area in particular. There were wires hanging down from the ceiling and several tables had been removed. This is sort of a con...but, hopefully, the remodeling will improve the layout and decor. Other con, there is only a men's room in the bar area. Lady's and men's room in the restaurant. So, every time you need to use the bathroom you have to go through the bar, into the "foyer" (which was freezing!) and then through the dining area. Pain in the butt and sort of awkward. The reason I am giving this place four stars is because I have always enjoyed the food and don't mind a dive bar atmosphere in the least. Wait staff is always friendly, especially in the bar area. I've sat in the dining room, too, and that's always been fine as well. Looking forward to a remodel and I would definitely return. They are known for their fish and wings, both of which are delicious! Worth your time!

Wings, fries, and salad were really good. They only allow you to get one sauce at a time for your wigs sadly. We got 2 dozen and had to get the same flavor. They will bring more on the side but charge you for them. Shouldn't the customer be allowed to order what they want? Even if u charge the extra sauce price in fine with that. Just give me what I want to order.

This is a great place to go if you want really quality bar food. They specialize in fish and their fish sandwich is delicious. Not a whole lot of beers on draft and their dining area isn't that large. Parking is at a minimal in a gravel style lot. Overall though, we absolutely love this place and keep coming back.

Under construction. We met your our friends here on Friday night. Zackels is a little off the beaten path in a small town called Claridge, in between Jeanette and Penn Trafford. The place itself is definitely what I would call a dive for sure. That said I already pointed out that they are in the makings of a remodel. But the current state without the construction is total dive from there plastic upholstered chairs to the heavy green vinyl table cloth, and the paper placemats with the business advertisements. The restaurant is divided into two sections. There is the bar section that also has tables, then you can walk out into a hallway and through a door and go into the restaurant section. We didn't sit in the restaurant side but I still had to go there because the bar side only has a men's room, no ladies room... So every time I had to use the restroom I had to leave the bar and go to the other side of the place. This isn't a huge deal just awkward, especially when all the wait staff stares at you when you walk in think you are coming in to eat but nope just to take care of some business. Moving on, the service was pretty good. I was disappointed to find that they had such a limited amount of beers. No IPA's or any crafts. I guess the closest was the Sam Adams and that is what I got. Now to the food. They have a lot of choices from your typical bar food to some more comfort home style dinners, and some specials. The special that night was the Delmonico with a salad, and 2 sides. My friend's husband ordered that and it was an enormous portion and I think it was only like $16.00. Now I think he ordered it burnt, or the professional term of medium well. I asked if he liked it and he said it was really good. His sides were green beans and a bowl of mashed potatoes. Yea a whole entire bowl filled. It was a big portion. My friend had a salad and really liked the dressing (balsamic) along with a dozen wings that I sampled and they were tasty too, though I prefer to have sauce to dip wings in she likes them just seasoned... Now the H got the stuffed shells... He loves pasta, and I try to stay away from the carbs as much as possible. It was also a nice portion and came with a salad. He got Italian dressing and asked if I wanted to eat half. I really am not a fan of huge iceberg lettuce chunk in my salad, and that is exactly what this salad was. Boo! And the dressing was just awful. It was so watery. Not vinegary but watery. Not sure how they made it, (stated it was homemade) but it was just bad. Now I wanted so much to try the soup but was nervous I wouldn't like it. Boy I am glad I took the chance because the seafood bisque was delightful. Not fishy at all, but creamy. I wish I would have got a bowl. I also ordered the grill cod sandwich. The portion of fish looked big but it was a very thin cut so once you folded it over it really didn't look much different in size than a normal sized fish sandwich. It was good, just thought it was stupid if you want tarter or cocktail sauce you could only have one and pay additional for the other one. Not a fan of that. So I will be interested in going back in the future to see how the place looks after the overhaul and maybe to get more soup. My H wasn't a huge fan of his meal, he thought the sauce tasted like jarred sauce, so I am sure he would pick something else as I will next time minus the soup. Delicious! I am thinking chicken wings next visit??? Maybe...
