This is an "old school" restaurant that has been a mainstay of Charleroi for many years. I haven't been there in the last decade or so therefore my expectations were "fresh" I had decided on my dinner selection before my dining companion had arrived. However I spied they had gnocci on the menu and I was told it was their homemade gnocci. I changed my dinner selection and never looked back. Their homemade gnocci was the most amazing I've ever had in my life. They were pillow soft and fluffy but substantive if that makes sense but I don't care if it does because that's how they were. They were served with their own tomato sauce and made for a delightful dinner. My companion had the spaghetti dressed simply with olive oil and garlic. I of course had a bite which proved to be delish!! It was a simple basic Italian dish that did exactly what simple peasant food should do and that is to shine by using great ingredients and let the food speak for itself. This was overall a great dining experience. Our server was very attentive and we were well taken care of. I'm not sure how she managed to do it but she talked me into trying a piece of their homemade blackberry pie for dessert and it was great. I will be back whenever I am home visiting family.

What happened here? I remember total deliciousness in 2003! 2015: Earlier this year, they had it on the menu that they only offer Alfredo sauce on Fridays, so I settled for something I didn't want. I saved my craving and eagerly went again on a Friday to be told that they don't serve Alfredo sauce anymore. I settled for something else...AGAIN. Present day...all of us debated on where to eat. I picked Rego's AGAIN, figuried...as long as I don't have my mouth watering for Alfredo, everything will be fine. The only other options in the surrounding area was same-old chains, bars, and greasy spoon, and I was not in the mood for any of those. Plus Rego's has a very good Marinara sauce, right? {{cough}} The plates arrived in much smaller portions. I imagined, being in Charleroi charging $14-$15 per selection. I expected a wee bit more. I tried this, my companions tried that, and the other. We all tried a part of each other's. And everything was okay... at best. My one friend was totally disappointed. I felt pretty stupid. Because I chose the dinner spot, and it was a flop, I insisted upon picking up the bill, and consider it as a life le$$on. A lesson I should have learned the first and second disappointments this year. : The first, and very generous star was for the fact I should not be so selective in this depressed area, the second, and very generous star goes out to the very nice waitress who provided good and friendly service, although I my generous gratuity should have sufficed. Okay, then the second star is for the environment. I love the old, charming, guilded-age building and interior that seems very nicely kept. ...and, the Marinara sauce is not so good...NOT anymore. Next time I choose between major-chain, bar, greasy spoon, far drive, pizza, or Rego's...We will drive far, or I will just cook.

Not the same as yester year.. Food ok still..especially the gnocchi, but service is very lacking since under new ownership. Bunya Cauda is a treat with the garlic toast.

A longtime Charleroi landmark for Italian dining in the Mon Valley. Has always been a favorite of my family: my wife and her mother grew up in Charleroi and Speers Hill and my son and have been coming back to Charleroi for the past forty two years and have always enjoyed our meals here. However, this was in the old days when Tito and Niño George owned it, Harry managed it and personally made his marvelous chocolate cakes that made you to want to discard your diet as you finished your Rego's dinner. My favorite dish has always been the homemade gnocci with meat sauce. Rego's always was the gold standard by which I judged homemade gnocci: they had a lighter version and another gnocci made by another local woman that was always slightly heavier. My favorite was the lighter version, but it was always nice to be surprised by which version you might receive on any given evening. The meat sauce with the gnocci of old was always excellent. The garlic bread and roasted red peppers were always favorite starter for my family while we enjoyed our cocktails from Rego's old fashioned bar. Everyone in our family always loved the Rego's house salad with the homemade house dressing...I especially liked my salad with two anchovies to kick it up to just the right notch. For the past 45 years, my wife has only ordered the spaghetti marinara, so it must be pretty good. Rego's also serves some of the Italian Spinoni ice cream you will find anywhere that is not home made. However, since Niño sold Rego's a couple of years ago, it's not just the same anymore. First, Harry and his delicious chocolat cakes have move on; secondly, my long loved Rego's gnocci have become permanently heavier and the sauce just too sweet for my taste; thirdly, while the garlic bread is still some of the best you will find anywhere (with just the right combination of butter/olive oil and garlic that is perfectly crispy on the outside and chewy tender on the inside), however, the roasted red peppers with garlic of old are history, the new Rego's serves up red pepper out of a jar that have never been near a roaster or flame.

Today I had a great Italian meal here for lunch. I had the gnocchi with meat sauce, salad, Italian bread & decaf coffee. I highly recommend the gnocchi, it was light & tender & meat sauce was very tasty. Service was very good & atmosphere was nice & quiet & very relaxing.

I've been going to Rego's for what seems like forever! Their salads with house dressing are fantastic, and their meat rav's are killer. Soups are good, pasta is too, all of your entree's come with freshly sliced italian bread basket. They haven't changed the decor in years, so it definitely looks outdated, but I'm a fan of outdated I guess. It's an old hotel that has become apartments I think upstairs, with a restaurant & a seperate bar on the first floor. Service is good, prices are basically what you would pay at any casual dining restaurant. I definitely recommend!

Used to be my favorite restaurant for the meat raviolis. I had them today and the sauce tasted like nothing; very watered down and disappointing. I'm hoping it's just an off day based upon past quality. Very cheap prices.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
