Seafood at a sports bar? No way! I have been visiting Champs over the past few months and passed on the idea of seafood at a sports bar. This week I decided to give it a try. Wow! First visit I had the Blackened Salmon Salad. Slow to the table but very tasty, with a good spice and not dry. Next visit I had the Gumbo and it was outstanding with shrimp, crab and oysters, I knew I was on to a good thing. Third visit I had the Bouillabaisse, included shrimp, crab legs, lobster and cod - Super! What was once a top notch sports bar with too many screens to count, and 30+ draft beers, just became the best restaurant in Altoona. Next time I am having the Cioppino, i bet it's fantastic. The bar is great too! Plenty of places to sit. Staff was really kind to us as I introduced my international guest to various American micro-brews on tap. I honestly believe Champs is the best food in Altoona.

Good food, and plenty of different adult beverages to choose from. Definitely one of the larger venues in the area, so that is a plus. Music was pretty good on the night I went in. The bartenders were very fast and attentive which is always a great quality to have. Would definitely go there again on a Friday night.

The food is always good. Ask for the Shrimp Creole, it's not on the menu anymore but it's a bowl of shrimp in a creole broth served with toasted ciabatta bread. Always delicious. The seafood bouillabaisse is equally as good. A little spicy but really good. The perogies with sautéed onions are exceptional.

Always come here when I'm traveling for work. Great beer selection and the food is good too! Sometimes the servers are not very attentive but the food and atmosphere makes up for it. Sport bar set up but not your typical sport bar food.

Great food, I've had salads, burgers, wings and some of the seafood dishes. They have a ton of TVs so if you want ot catch a game its great for that. The beer selection is pretty good and there are very inexpensive mixed drinks as well. This is now our go-to place when traveling through Altoona.

There used to be a Champs in my area quite a few years back. My friends and I would watch the games there every Sunday. The food was always really good. We were sad to see it close. This Champs had it all over the one I knew. It was huge inside! They have stadium like seating in the bar area, which faces about 20 TV's, so there is no way you can miss any of the games. We started with the nachos and they were huge! I also had the French dip. It was stuffed with meat. The Mac n cheese was excellent as well. My girlfriend had a burger and was very pleased. Great place to watch a game and eat a lot of carbs! I wish they would open one back in this area.

Sat at the bar, with a friend. Beer refills were offered with 1/3 left, but otherwise we were left alone, which was fine. Service is friendly and draft variety is pretty good. I like this location better than the State College one.

Simply some of the best food around. My fav when in Altoona. Never had a bad experience.

This place was terrible! Service was extremely slow, food was mediocre, and the environment was not the most welcoming. I would strongly recommend that you frequent another bar if you're looking for an enjoyable night with friends and family.

Staying at the Hampton Inn and didn't want to drive to dinner. Great choice! Two pages of draft beer choices. Huge menu. The Bookmaker sandwich is delicious and could feed two people. Hubby had the #21. It was great, too. Highly recommend the side Caesar salad. The dressing is very tasty. Clean and cute. Service was great even when we accidentally showed up in the middle of a Penn State football game.

This experience was pretty hit or miss all in one visit. We came here for a team meal after a hockey game with about a dozen kids and then their parents. Both the food and service was spotty. First off they had a pretty good beer selection. I got the Flying Monkey Smashbomb Atomic IPA. Now this was not brewed here but was a nice "almost" session style ipa. I say that only because it was eminently drinkable with a 6% abv which is lowish for an ipa. The food, the wings were ok. Nothing special but serviceable. I had the pulled pork which was actually pretty good. It had a sweet & vinegary Carolina style sauce with a nice creamy dill slaw. I got a side of the Mac & cheese. It came piping hot in a crock with a perfect crust on the top. The mufalata was good though a tad bland. The cheese sauce was a bit weak though. Id like a shaper flavor. I tried a few other dishes around me with varying results. The general thought on the steak and/or steak sandwiches was very poor. It was rubbery, cold and lacking in seasoning. The cheese fries were served cold. The French onion soup had no melted cheese. The service was also lacking. Several people did not get their meals served at all or very late (and cold). Obviously they were not missed when being made, just in delivery. Most people also went the entire meal without being asked for a drink refill. The restaurant itself is actually a really nice setup. Ample seating. Great bar. Plenty of tvs. I really think this place needs to fix some of the issues with the food and service and could really be top notch.

No! I've been here twice and either the service was terrible or the food was a problem. First time the server had no clue about the beer selection so she couldn't tell me what dark flights I should order. Food was okay. Second visit I ordered a salad with NO meat as I am a vegetarian. My salad arrived drenched in dressing. Not wanting to complain I ate 2 bites and found bacon. I asked for another salad without the meat as I first requested and dressing on the side. After a large amount of time my salad arrived and the server stated this was the 3rd try as they put the dressing on the salad. Do you think I was offered even a small discount, especially since I said no meat and had a problem with my food..,no! Clue to restaurants: if you charge extra for extra meat, deduct for no meat...especially if something as simple as a salad is sent back. If you want to drink and watch the game go to Champs but don't order the food.

Good experience. The Reuben sandwich was a great choice - a little messy and my server knew to bring extra napkins. But who cares ... it was delicious! Paired it with the Mac 'n Cheese and two different craft beers on their extensive list. Left Champs as a satisfied customer and will try it again. Especially since it is in the same parking lot as the hotel where I stayed. There are TV's everywhere so if that is a turn off for you, stay away. But it's what you'd expect when they advertise as a sports bar & grille.

Had a fantastic dinner pork chop with corn on the cob and mac and cheese. Staff was very friendly

One word, "Awesome!!!" Food was great!! Order the side mac and cheese, you WON'T be disappointed. Our server, Bill, was fantastic. One of the best! He recommend a few items and was spot on with all recommendations. Great prices, too. You will not be disappointed eating here... And if you need a place too stay, the Hampton Inn is right next door, hell, they share the same parking lot. Highly recommended!!!

Huge sandwich with 1/2 a pound of very good ham and I got the Mac and cheese instead of the fries. Service was good beer selection is huge and they had tvs for your sports watching pleasure. Will be back next time we are in Altoona

A champs in an old Don Pablo's building. The inside is a cool 2 story Mexican looking building. They have a lot of different beers on tap here. We had to pay a cover charge to get into here last Friday because there was a fight on TV that we did not even want to watch. I thought it was very very strange to have to pay a cover charge at a chain restaurant.

Service is a little light. Wings are good, beer selection is the best in Altoona, many TV screens = good sports bar?

    (4)
  • Nick W.

It's just your average sports bar. Some food, such as the mussels and meat ball sandwich are really good. But some such as the pasta with vodka sauce isn't, it tastes like it's just a creamy tomato sauce. There are a lot of huge TVs, and it's nice to sit upstairs.

Be very cautious at this establishment... my CC was over-charged by $26.00... check your receipts/hold on to your receipts to proof vs. your CC statement.

This is a true sports bar! So many televisions! Ian is a great bartender. Well drinks are slightly more expensive than they should be. Food was fine.

1/2 price drafts (selct from 68 on tap) 5-7 pm.............great pizza.......sometimes slow, but we are always there with friends! The steam bar is to die for - clams and shrimp have pleased our palate. No waiting there...

The menu has several amazing items including salads, sandwiches and burgers. Check out the 39 craft beers in draft and atmosphere that is unlike any other in Altoona.

Very good place to eat if your biz traveling. Although I didn't, stay at the Hampton Inn across the lot so you can imbibe in the large variety of brews.

After our first debacle, we decided to give Champs another shot. We had gone back 4 more times, which were actually decent, until we hit last Friday night's disaster. We were there to celebrate a friends birthday, so his family was with my wife and me. I ordered a 23oz draft which had a 3 inch head on it. When it finally cleared out my 23oz beer was more like a 19oz beer. I didn't say a word. Then my salad came, which I asked for with no cheese. It didn't have the cheese and it was also missing the pasta which normally comes on their side salads. Again, I said nothing. Also, while ordering fettuccine for her son, my friend's wife asked if her son could have something in place of a side salad. The response, "no." "Have it your way" is not on the menu. After our meal, I happened to look down and see a trail of sauce (or something) all over the floor coming from behind our table all the way to the stairs. Then I realized whatever it was was all over my shirt which I had over the back of my chair. As the girl is cleaning the floor, I am examining my shirt. All of the sudden a pile of napkins lands on the table and she says, "here you go." No apology. Disgusted, we decide to tell a manager. We see the shorter manager who had given us a hard time the first time we had a bad experience, but he was accompanied by another on duty manager. We explained the situation and his reply was...drum roll please..."please, accept my apology." That's it. No adjustment. No gift cert for a future visit. Nothing. I know several people who have had similar issues with Champs. I also know someone who does a lot of business with them and who actually knows the owner. I was told basically he is a tight ass who tries to rule with an iron fist. The employees are scared to lose their jobs constantly. Consequently if you have a bad meal, it's near impossible to get anything done about it. The lack of concern for clientele is evident at Champs. The only concern seems to be the almighty dollar at any cost. They do a great business, so what do they care if they lose a customer? I have shared my story with many friends and co-workers who have all been turned off by the thought of going there. That's where Champs loses out. Word spreads and you lose not just one person's business, you lose anyone they happen to tell. Food is usually good. Beer selection is awesome. The experience is hit or miss and not worth the hassle if it goes badly. Management does NOT care. Period. Avoid at all costs.

Worst experience EVER at a restaurant, and I work in the restaurant business. Got a greasy pizza and asked them to cook me a fresh pizza, they refused to cook a new pizza and told me they would NOT take the pizza off my bill. This manager is the worst excuse for a manager, she actually argued with me about the pizza and made me pay for it. I will never be back and will put the word out about my horrible experience!!!!!

Customer service is terrible here and I will never go back. Waitresses are rude and the prices are outraegous.

I don't know what some others are talking about...the service here is great. Katie never let my glass go empty, always smiled, and offered some great suggestions. I ended up selecting the Grilled Tommy, and this sandwich was fantastic. Gt a side of the Mac and cheese, and it was equally as good. I am not a regular, so there was no preferential treatment. Great food, great service, and great atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Very nice layout. Lots of tv's, great for sports. Great beer selection Food isn't bad but nothing great. Possibly the worst wings I have ever had! Very poor service!!!! The only place that has worse service is the Champs in State College!

Are you listening Champs?? Your service needs some serious help! I like going here for the broad selection of beers. Several of the food items are actually quite good, but I am SO TIRED of not being able to get my (or any) server's attention. They stand around talking to each other (especially at the bar) or walk right by without even looking my way. I have seen many other customers suffer the same fate. Management needs to train this staff how to PAY ATTENTION to the customers. My favorite is the middle-aged, pony tailed bartender who stands around watching the big screen TV's instead of paying attention to the customers. Wow.... Now the food CAN be good, but it is inconsistent at times. For example, I love the Kobe Sliders, but there have been a few times when they tasted lousy. Don't ask me why, but my girlfriend agrees. I also wish they would rotate the beer selection more often. They have a gazillion taps, but it's pretty much the same selection almost every time, which does get boring. This place could be so much better if the staff were better trained. The owner acts the same way, so what can you expect?

Awesome sports bar! Tons of good beer on tap. Good food, great waitresses, many TVs. Nothing better in this town!

I come to Altoona a few times a year to visit family. I have been to Champ's three times. First time it was slow, probably due to the fact that there taps weren't open because the specs for the tap room were off for inspections. The service was horrible, it seemed the waitstaff was more interested in talking to themselves then serving customers. Also if you have a nice selection of craft beers here's a hint, know what they are, because when I order one and the bartender looks for five minutes then comes back and asks me what it is, that's not good for business. The second time was much better and I gave them the benefit of the doubt that they just opened, so i decided to give them a third shot. Third times the charm...not a chance. There was five people in the bar and i asked 4 times to have the phillies put on one of the 15 tv's they have and they did after the 2nd time, but only 10 minutes. I am done with this place due to the HORRIBLE service. One the bright side they have an excellent beer selection, if you can get someone's attention to serve you.
