Don't be fooled by the unattractive exterior. The food is delicious and the service quick and friendly. Also, unlike every other restaurant we tried in this little town, the hours on yelp were correct.

The shake we had was good. The food we had was not. This place is cute and has a fun small town feeling but the food is nothing special. The fries especially were a let down. Based off all of the other reviews we were expecting a lot better quality.

In the past week, I stopped on the way home, I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, it was juicy and worth the short wait for order, just know that you can call head and they will have it ready when you drive up. The staff is friendly, which in this day and age is priceless. The menu has a varied selection of burgers, your odds of finding one for you is excellent! I recommend the tots and any flavor milk shake they are all great!

The staff at Hal's were friendly to us out of towners driving through. Worth pulling off the freeway to eat at a mom and pop place instead of a chain.

I must say that I was not happy at first, but told them what happened and they replaced the burger the next day free of charge. Thank you for your kindness and professionalism.

We ate here during Pendleton Week and, unlike many restaurants in the area, their menu and prices did not change. It was a fabulous place - reminded me of my former days as a grill cook. Nothing fancy - just a great little diner. There is something unforgettable about a grilled hamburger made from quality beef, which this one was. Just for fun, I had a cone and it was fabulous! The customer service was excellent; staff was friendly - felt at home.

I'd be curious to know what this place got on their health score. The kid cooking the food was also handling the money and never washed his hands once, the grill was disgusting and then there was the flies. I've never seen so many flies in such a tiny space. It's almost like they're trying to set a record. Buy some damn fly strips or something. Don't go here unless you're looking to get a good case of diarrhea.

Looking for gas and saw this cute little place. Filled up on burgers and fries and I loved my chocolate peanut butter milkshake!! A perfect stop for a quick bite if you're on the road.

Short & sweet ... not good & not worth the detour. Frozen hamburger patty cooked till dry, overripe tomato that I actually took off. Didn't finish burger. First hot dog was prepared wrong, redo was barely cooked. Fries were cold. Onion rings were just okay & fairly greasy. It's a definite pass on this place.

We used Yelp and it didn't disappoint! Easy on and off the freeway with two teenage daughters who just want to get home. Large portions and sweet and helpful staff made this a great stop.

"Serving You Since '52"... Hal's is THE BEST! Every time I pass through Oregon I make it a point to stop at Hal's. Even its hours away and I'm starving, I will wait to eat until I get to Hal's. Bacon cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate shake. This is not some yuppie, foo foo, politically correct status symbol. This is a real, 100% all American, best you can buy burger! If you don't stop at Hal's Hamburgers fine, MORE FOR ME!

Best damn shakes we gave ever had. EVER!!!!!!!!! The staff there was amazing. It was Sunday 8/23/2015. The guy and girl working their was so nice and we're working their ass off. I will make sure we stop here everytime we come this way. Thank you to the staff for caring about the food you serve and taking the time to ask us if we enjoyed everything. We most definetly did. This place does it right. Please give them your business for they will always have ours.

Yes! Eat here! Burgers, tots, onion rings and shakes. All good! Add on the fry sauce and order the a "small" shake. The largest is listed as quart sized! Friendly staff made this a favorite stop on our trip home to Portland!

Solid burgers, wonderfully old joint, it's just been too long since my travels for work have taken me to Pendleton, because I'd be all over Hal's. Sure there are better, high end type burgers, but this one just unapologetically kicks ass, all wrapped up in paper. It's what a burger needs to be. By comparison, Hal's is better than both In-N-Out and Five Guys, if you've had either of those chains. Good stuff, Maynard!

Worst customer service I have ever had, and they had no other customers. The girl running the register refused my diabetic client service because of his quote on quote drug problem while he was giving himself an insulin shot in the privacy of our car. this was by far the worst experience when it comes to public service I have ever had. I will never spend another dime in this establishment again

Good burgers - check! Good fries - check! Fair prices - check! Friendly wait staff - check! A belligerent cook who calls you a liar when they make a mistake on your order - check! Wait, what?! My wife and I have been stopping at Hal's on our drives between Portland and Milton-Freewater for years. The quality of their food, if you're looking for a classic burger joint, is pretty good. Their shakes are excellent. The wait staff have always been great to us. I have previously recommended the place to friends, but will not do so going forward, and will never spend a dime of my own money there again. On 5/24/14, we stopped by for lunch. I ordered an avocado and bacon burger, add the cheese for a little extra cost. My wife's cheeseburger was exactly as she ordered it. I opened mine to find only bacon. Not to worry, I thought! I'll just take it back and politely ask them to add the cheese and avocado since that's what we paid for. "Excuse me, ma'am?" "What's the problem?" "I ordered an avocado bacon burger, add cheese, and there's only bacon. I was wondering if I could get the cheese and avocado?" "I gave you avocado," the older lady standing over the grill says. She sounded so incredibly sure of herself that I inspected my burger again. "Well, no, I'm sorry, but there isn't any on my burger, and no cheese." "Then it must be on your wife's burger!" she snapped. Now, I've seen thirty-nine winters come and go without EVER returning anything to a restaurant kitchen until now. I'm not a picky guy. My order can be too cold, too hot, a bit under or over done, I'm just really not that particular. As such, you can be sure that I asked the wife to check her burger for the errant avocado before I even bothered to walk my burger back to the counter to explain that I would like the two items that I paid for but hadn't received. "No, we checked her burger, she got what she ordered. No avocado." "Well, one of you got it!" By this time, she had snatched up my burger, tossed the hamburger patty back onto the grill with a slice of cheese, and angrily fished around for a couple of slices of avocado to throw onto my bun. "I know you got it!" "Are you calling me a liar?" "Yes I am!" Well folks, there is no point in arguing with crazy, and there's no excuse for such poor customer service. We'll be looking for another burger place on our drives between Eastern and Western Oregon. Hold the surly!

I have came to Hal ' s twice in the last c I up Le of weeks on my lunch hour. The first time I had to leave without ordering after 25 minutes - 2 cars ahead of me. This time it took 35 minutes to get a BLT and tater tots. Sadly, until they get a better grip on it I won't be able to come back for lunches. Both dates different times of day.

Stopped here on a road trip. It was good - got a burger and fries. They have a HUGE selection of flavors for a shake and you can make your own combination... I just did peanut butter and chocolate. It satisfied my road trip hunger!

Great Burger, Fries, Salad and Milk shake! This is all you could hope for a small town greasy hamburger joint! There is even a cheap gas station next door if you need a pit stop! My husband had the bacon, cheese burger which was slathered with mayo (not my taste, but not my stomach) he loved it! The fries were exactly what I remembered from my childhood greasy spoon. The milkshake was good and thick, we went with another yelpers recommendation of the huckleberry white chocolate, I found it a bit sweet. My chicken salad was good with shredded lettuce, olives, tomatoes, and onions. The chicken was great! Don't expect a creative culinary masterpiece, but enjoy this good old American drive-in!

I ordered: Jumbo Bacom Cheeseburger $5.75 Onion Rings $3.40 Large Huckleberry/White Chocolate Milkshake $3.15 The pricing isn't to bad, its actually quite affordable for the large amount of food they serve. My onion rings were cooked just right, they were delicious especially with the fry sauce that was so good! My husband had ordered a hot dog with everything, he gave me half of that because he got full from his fries and Jumbo Bacon Cheeseburger. The hot dog was wonderful, with the sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles with cheese it was the best hot dog I had ever eaten, the bread they used was soft and flavorful it mingled well with everything else, it was positively delicious. My huckleberry/white chocolate milkshake was awesome just the right amount of flavors to not be over powering, I am glad I got a large and not the quart I don't think I could have finished that much :-) I ate only a small amount of my jumbo bacon cheeseburger because I had gotten so full from everything else, it was so good what I did eat. I give high recommendations to eating here the food and service were wonderful.

One week after my first visit I returned. This experience was better than the first for several reasons: I was asked whether I wanted "fry sauce" or not (many folks will really like this stuff), the onion rings are VERY good, and our stuff came on a tray with a bottle of ketchup (I had indicated I was a "here" order) instead of the bags, packets of ketchup, etc. that I received last time (when I indicated for "here"). The service was far better today (and it was really busy). I had a double bacon cheese burger this time, and it was pretty great. I would not do this very often, though (what a meal). Fries and one their shakes (chocolate, and yes, the shakes are really about the best ever) on top of the burger was a real risk, but given the circumstances it was a good call.

We loved our food at Hal's. Our waitperson came out before we got to the window so our order went in quicker. It was well worth the 1.5 mile diversion from our 2-day road trip to Colorado. We will stop again when in Pendleton. We had the cheese burger, bacon burger, and Hawaiian burger. Yummy!

The local burger shack. Pretty conveniently located off the interstate, which is why we swung in here on the way back to Salem from Baker City. The burgers and fries were pretty standard. My favorite part of the meal was the large chocolate milkshake my boyfriend and I split. Now that was tasty. One thing I noticed, I would not choose the drive through for pick up. Because the burgers are handmade to order, the wait is longer than you would expect from your average fast food joint. This makes the drive through a traffic jam. We parked, walked in, got our orders, and sat down on their outside seating. Where we fought with the wind to keep our napkins in check, but still, was a nice meal.

I'm from Santa Barbara... land of the tan, fit, healthy and enlightened! Ha! Having been a pure vegetarian for 20 years, I rarely eat meat. But when I do, it's In & Out or the Habit: both good burgers but the former are getting smaller and worse every year. My cattlemen burger (with added tomatos and onion)from Hals Was AMAZING! I've learned to always ask the locals what to get, so I did ask the girl taking my order, and this burger has truly spoiled me for any others. The banana shake with extra bananas (at my request) was chunky and soooooooo tasty. And the kids serving the food were so kind and personable. I felt like I was in their own kitchen. It was pouring rain, stong winds, and lightening, so the drive-in was a huge bonus. Love this place! I can't say I'll be back because I live so far away, but I really want to let people know how good this place is!

Stopped at Hal's to try their hamburgers. Have stooped before, but only had their milk shakes - maybe 3 stars, but nothing great. So this time we decided to order the burgers and then go to Wendy's for their shakes ( did this once before ). Hamburger was great! Probably the best I have had in either Pendleton or LaGrande. To me this is a five star burger. Downside of our visit, though really not that bad, was that the young man doing the cooking was all alone. He had to take orders from both the counter and the drive thru, cook all the orders, then collect for all of them. He was extremely rushed, but remained polite through the whole ordeal. For those of you who have followed our quest to find the best burger and chocolate shake, know that Pendleton has it share of problems. The first time we stopped for a quick meal at Burger King, their grill was broken, as was their shake machine. Another time we stopped at a diner downtown, I had to order a cheeseburger w/o the cheese in order to get a regular burger. Then another time we stopped at a char-burger spot and their shake machine was broken (this was the first we took our burgers to Wendy's for shakes). This time Wendy's ice cream machine was broken! What is with Pendleton?

For a drive-thru, classic 1950s burger joint, this is as good as it gets! Nothing fancy, just delicious burgers, onion rings, and amazing milkshakes. And really inexpensive. Fantastic.

Yessss good burgerssss good fries ok priceee radical place to eat. best burger in town yo

  • Eric E.

Great little burger joint that can be a little confusing because it's three little buildings. A small building in the parking lot where the Kitchen and order taking is. A building next to it for indoor dining with out door dining next to it and the bathrooms and an storage building next to that. However the burgers were very reasonably priced and pretty decent burgers. I got the BBQ burger, and my only complaint was it could use a tad more sauce. But we would gladly come back anytime.

We stopped by one evening while staying at a local hotel and had their chili cheese fries. I also ordered a bacon cheeseburger with everything on it. It was so good I showed up the next day for another round. The staff was great and exhibited all the small town friendliness you would never get west of the cascades. They are an excellent example of the classic drive in burger.

  • Gil G.

This is a very small drive-thru with a few outdoor picnic tables. The cheeseburger was excellent but the milkshake had a slight sour taste. Unfortunately we went inside to return a tray and discovered flies. Lots of them.....everywhere! Thus only two stars.

Yummy burgers, crisp hot onion rings with great flavor and a thick shake. To top it off this busy local hamburger stand has quick service and good prices.

Best Hamburgers. Juicy and packed with goodies and delicious sauce. Priced right. New favorite. We recommend driving here to eat burgers and see the Pendleton wool factory (store has very nice items). Thanks for reading. The Bike Chaplain

Super delicious! Guys behind the counter were friendly and funny. We got a hamburger, a bacon cheese burger, fries and onion rings. All were amazeballs. The onion rings were the best I've has in years. Worth the trek off the highway.

Hal's was just what needed, a classic drive in with quick service and and outdoor seating on a road trip. The staff was friendly, the burgers were wolfed down, and I know the ice cream snacks are what you can expect from a top notch drive in. Bring a four legged friend and they might get a nice treat as well.

Portions are massive. Great staff and customer service. Food was very good. Looks to be recently remodeled which looked very well done and created a great atmosphere.

The food here is alright. There service isn't great and the place isn't very clean. I'm not sure how this place has gotten any reviews higher than 3 stars. I've had food poisoning from here as well as most of my family and friends. If you're up for a good burger I'd suggest a McDonalds before this place.

Had an excellent Bacon cheeseburger. Friendly service as well. I stopped in Pendleton for gas and used my Yelp app to find a place where I could grab a quick burger. The food is reasonably priced, served with a smile, and had a great home-made feel to it. Definitely worth checking out.

What a cool little burger joint. Fast friendly service, great shake, perfect bacon cheeseburger, and good onion rings. Worth the trip off the interstate if you are driving through Pendleton.

Unique burger/shake shack worth visiting due to nostalgic building, decor, and the burgers. I always try to support local businesses while road tripping it (as long as the food is fresh, respectable and good). The beef burgers, breakfast sandwiches, shakes, and onion rings are their better items, everything else is nothing unique. Good outdoor and indoor eating areas as well.

It's hard to accurately rate a place that provided many fond memories from my childhood. We lived somewhat close by (by rural Pendleton standards) and would walk here after catching frogs from the pond under the nearby bridge to get flavored cokes: Vanilla, chocolate and cherry made with syrup instead of the new commercial products. A drive-thru with soda fountains, greasy burgers, shakes, soft server iceam: Americana still stands here. This place really is a local icon, so if you find yourself in town (Hell, I don't know why you'd end up here other than to visit family, the Round-Up or just passing through), be sure to stop by for the experience. Mmm, bacon burgers, fries and a cherry soda (with syrup, not the commercial mix) will be had while I'm here on this trip!

  • Tami P.

I have only eaten here a handful of times, mostly because they can get spendy if you've got a crowd, The burgers are yum, the "small" fry sauce is in fact ginormous, and it's an enjoyable meal.

Had the bacon cheeseburger with sauteed onions. Fabulous. Freshly cooked with just the right amount of everything. Fries were wonderful too. Highly recommend

Mmmm....Great Huckleberry milk shake. When I drive back from Boise, I take the first Pendleton exit, get gas at the gas station next to this place and get a Huckleberry milk shake and fries. So, so good!

Just ate a super-awesome bacon cheeseburger from there that I'll be thinking about for days. Plus the shake and fries were nothing to sneeze at. And fry-sauce!!!! Damn I love fry sauce. This place is awesome. I definitely hope to come back to Pendleton soon so I can stop in again.
