If you are lucky enough to be able to get out for lunch--- and now breakfast! please check this place out. A historical site for cold and hot sandwiches alike and creative salads with toppings like pine nuts, feta cheese, Mandarin oranges, and broccoli. Love the staff and the experience. Usually so busy it feels like Manhattan--- but your food comes out pretty quick. Ask Jen about the history if she has time!

Always fabulous at lunch (ANY salad or burger or...... ANYTHING!). Now they do a breakfast that is fabulous and so fresh! Morning buns are unbelievable, and my favorite so far has been the Jennifer wrap. They added breakfast pizzas and they are great too. Hard to decide! Perfect to share if you are feeling friendly, or not. There is nothing like their breakfast in all of Toledo, downtown or anywhere. Ambiance is great. Good music. Wi fi. Good place for a breakfast meeting too. Saw several groups enjoying a break from the office.

I love GRUMPY'S. It is my absolute favorite place to go when I am in Toledo. Ooooooh the O-Ring sandwich and the desserts are phenomenal as well. Definitely get cookies to go.

Get the Garbage salad... it's disgusting... ly good.

Great spot for breakfast or lunch. Lunchtime is always bustling. Mornings are a little more low-key, and this is a great spot for morning meetings (free wi-fi). Staff is super friendly and the food is great. The cinnamon bun french toast is the best I've ever had (don't tell my grandma!). Terrific place to take out-of-towners. Sophisticated food, very tasty all around. Be sure to try the cookies, and take some back to your office!

This place looks great...The food was good the service was spot on. I had the garbage salad it was super good went to go to the farmers market afterward it is thur and i guess it was closed the space down there needs someone to promote and make it better it was pretty depressing the two restaurants inside the Market where pizza and sandwiches blah

Food is AMAZING!!! My only complaint is that they are only open from 11:00-2:00. I live right across the street and would eat dinner there regularly if possible. Also, as a result of their short hours, they are always extremely crowded.

Wow! So glad we left the highway to come here thanks to Yelp. Pulled pork sliders with vinegar based BBQ sauce were outstanding. Carrot cabbage slaw very crisp and fresh. Perfect fresh brewed iced tea. Husband had Italian seasoned beef sandwich. Like a burger with seasonings mixed into the meat. Delicious. Great atmosphere in restored National Historic Register building.

If you are eating downtown for lunch this is the spot. If you've never tried it you are way overdue. I don't eat here often. Really quite infrequently actually. But I have never had a bad experience. Its good everytime. Great salads and sandwiches. Good pie too!

The garbage salad is AMAZING. It's original, and sooooo delicious. It is a fast paced restaurant that gets you in and out which is great when you are on a limited lunch break.

O.K. - I thought this was going to be a Toledo food revelation, instead it just turned out to be a nice deli with tablecloths. I mean the food was alright but it wasn't jump out of your seat fantastic. I had one of the grilled sandwiches. It was still a little cold in the middle but it was tasty. My wife had the Rueben, which she enjoyed. I found that the prices, which seemed high were paying for the tablecloths and not the food. Our waitress appeared friendly but was also in a rush. She never came back after the order and someone else brought the bill. Lastly I see where the name Grumpy's came from, it is the guy running the place and the name says it all. All in all, an OK place to go if you have a couple extra bucks in you pocket but not a destination by any means.

Amazining food and great atmosphere. It's a hidden gem in Toledo, its a little pricey but well worth it. I love the tuna burger.

Possibly the best restaurant in Toledo. McPeek and I used to fight over who was going to order the smoked chicken tortellini. I much preferred dinner which was only Friday and Saturday to lunch. I believe it's a new location since they built the new ballpark downtown.

Love their Garbage Salad...I wish they were open on the weekends!!

Pros: Atmosphere, Service, and Food (Babalu - their version of the Cuban). Speedy and delicious! Boyfriend had the Monte Cristo which had the most delicious sauces that exist on this dirt ball. Cons: if you can call them cons...chips as a side were average, cookie was pricy for what it was and parking was a bit confusing until you could read the sign on the door. You can park in the lot as long as there isn't a mud hens game going on. But, I will be back over and over again. I can't wait to try their salads which were eye catching and huge.

  • Sean F.

Had the "Hot Secret" - I think the secret is the lack of flavor. The so-called BBQ beef has no discernable flavor except the BBQ sauce that's poured over it; otherwise it might as well be 3 oz. of SteakUm crap. By the way, the menu says "your choice of homemade BBQ sauce" which I was never given a choice! Opted to pay $2 extra for macaroni salad, which was not macaroni, but sea-shell pasta. Big difference! Also, flavorless yet had plenty of fresh veggies chopped into it... so weird. Won't be back. Good reviews must be from regulars or fast food addicts that appreciate a change, even if it's a mediocre.

Wow, Wow, Wow! I rarely go downtown for lunch places, so a shop that closes at 2 p.m. is not somewhere I would typically stop for lunch. I did however stop in there last week as a coworker and I had to be in the area in the morning. We both had sandwiches, chips and a pickle. The food was great, it came out quickly and we were treated amazingly by our waitress despite it being standing room only in the place. She still checked in on us several times. She suggested we try the jalapeno mayo instead of the traditional. It was a FANTASTIC addition to the flavors. My only complaint, we both had water, and it was a bit warm, despite being full of ice. I'm not sure what it is, other than it likely came from a tap and wasn't refrigerated or out of a chilled machine. Not a huge deal, but just enough to not call it a perfect 5 star spot. Not enough to stop me from ever coming back.

Grumpy's is ideally located for breakfast before an afternoon Mud Hens game. I was in town with a friend and we stopped here for breakfast. The menu has a few offbeat items as well as your standards. I went with the Shorty (breakfast sandwich) and my friend had the French Toast with ham. My sandwich was good but I was jealous of that French Toast. Service was friendly and prompt. I meant to go back for those awesome looking cookies but didn't make it after the game. I plan to eventually make it back to Toledo as well as Grumpy's. But next time for lunch.

Atmosphere is good. It's deli/cafeteria loud. That describes the food also. It lacks flavor and I've had better food at a potluck then here. I had the pinwheel with a supposed sauce but it was jelly. The wrap they used was dried out. The carrot salad was mostly red onion. I would not come back nor do I think it's worth it. I see good reviews so maybe it was what I ordered. My husband ordered the hot secret. The meat was so dry and bland. It really is comparable to a hospital cafeteria of bland and dry meats/good

  • Adam W.

Four is high for my experience but, the service, food and decor / arrangement are all very good. I had the salmon burger - the wheat bun and burger were dry. Cucumber was in large chunks underneath, kept falling out. 4 pieces of spinach (I counted) made up the greens. I also had the carrot cabbage slaw - very good thigh the raisins looked like they had been soaking in that poppyseed dressing for far too long. One compatriot had the pork belly BLT, added an avocado & fried egg - out of this world. Everyone else in our party was very happy. Had cookies to complete, they're kinda pricy at $1.50 but really, they're worth it.

  • Danny A.

I've heard the breakfast is amazing. I missed breakfast by 10 min. I ordered the taco salad and it was a whole lot of lettuce and not a lot of beef or veggies. Everyone else I was with enjoyed their meal but I did not.

  • Josh S.

Food: Wow - pleasant surprise! Unlike a lot of Toledo restaurants, Grumpy's does not try to masquerade as "Fine Diningâ„¢". I ordered the reuben, and it was simple, unpretentious, and delicious! We sampled the chocolate cheesecake as well. Not a single part of me regrets exceeding my diet calories after this meal. Atmosphere: Urban, exposed brick, close quartered seating. Like the food, honest, unpretentious. Service: The only reason I did not give 5 stars. Waitress was nice enough, but she was not very attentive. Coffee was only refilled once.

Ok, this review has been 3 years in the making. I've been coming to Grumpy's for a long time. I live very close, but even if I didn't....I'd drive 2 hours for this food. Grumpy's is the quintessential lunch spot in Toledo and has been for years. Only open Monday thru Friday, you've gotta come on your lunch break to get some. And it will still always, always be loaded. And youll soon find out why. When I say that I've had nearly everything on Grumpy's menu, I'm not kidding. You'll never eat a juicier burger...ever. The Hye Roller is another go-to, and the sauce they serve with it...crack. Another personal way I judge a restaurant's worth, is by their reuben sandwich. Grumpys....ladies and gents, does not disappoint. Now let me talk about the one thing that I have ordered EVERY SINGLE TIME (20+) I've gone there. The Toledo famous, garbage salad. Its absolutely incredible. A fantastic blend of greens, cheese, candied bacon, mushrooms, among other things. All tied together with the best salad dressing you'll ever have, their homemade poppy seed dressing. Let me be frank, I've dipped a sandwich into this stuff before, and I'd put it on cereal if I could. Last but not least, Grumpy's bakes an assortment of fresh cookies, pies, and cakes every day, surprise surprise, they're all amazing. Look, if you don't want to take my word for it, go there. Your life will be immeasurably better.

I've been to Grumpy's 3-4 times now for lunch and I've had satisfying experiences each time. The food is great, and service is prompt. The pork belly sandwich and garbage salad are the bomb! The staff are friendly and quick - exactly what you want for a lunchtime stop.

Be prepared to wait for a table, but the turnover is quick and well worth a wait. Hands down the best burger I have ever eaten in my entire life! The charbroiled taste was just amazing and of course the burger was juicy. It is small and crowded but the food delicious. The service is top notch. We will be going again and again.

  • Deb H.

Extremely disappointed. Expectations were high based on reviews. Ordered BBQ beef sandwich with potato salad. Beef was dry, chewy, and seemed like it was heated in a microwave. Potato salad had no flavor. Waitress never came back to ask how food was. Flagged down waitress to get bill and was told she likes the food there. Person at counter looked away and ignored us when we expressed our dissatisfaction.

Always wanted to try Grumpy's but never found a time to go until now. Tried the garbage salad, great food. Hours are a little inconvenient but it's worth finding a time to try it out. Friendly staff, quick lunch.

Nice locally owned. Personal service. Fresh food. Thumbs up. I was driving through Toledo and did not want to eat in the chain restaurant and took a chance on this place. I was not disappointed it was fun.

This place is awesome. Great atmosphere, service and food. The Garbage Salad is one of my favorite things to eat in Toledo an their Garbage cookies are to die for. I just wish they were open after work! I'd recommend checking it out to anyone in the area!

Fantastic sandwiches!! Best gluten free veggie sandwich I have ever had anywhere. They recommended the gf veggie bread and I was so happy I took their advice. My hubby had a meat eaters sandwich (started with a "d"). He was also super happy. We ordered to go and waited only about 10 - 15 minutes for the food. We sat outside with our golden retriever and then took her and our lunch to promenade park along the lake. It was a great view and a fun walk. We also both got the small size garbage salads. I saved mine for dinner that night and it was still delicious. We will definitely be back!

I have been to Grumpy's 5 or 6 times. It was Dustin Hostetler's post on Facebook that drew us in. Every meal there has been outstanding until my recent take-out order. I had a Jen sandwich and a cookie to go. Maybe it's just me but if your going to advertise Pastrami, it needs to taste like Pastrami. In checking the menu I see it was Turkey Pastrami. It had very little flavor. I think I need to go back and order a Pastrami sandwich before I complete this review. Still, I have had Turkey Pastrami that had good flavor. This was kind of like sanitized lunch meat and not a deli quality sandwich. My conclusion, get the garbage salad or something else. Keeping the 5 stars and heading back for more sandwiches soon. Oh yeah, the cookie is free when you check in at Yelp.

The Garbage Salad is sooooo good!!! Service is great! I wish this place was open on the weekends. Grumpy's is definitely one of my favorite downtown staples.

Ate here twice in 2 days while in Toledo on business. Had a wrap and salad which were both good. Home made dressings were great. Picked up some garbage cookies to go for my wife and son so the jury is still out on those. I would recommend this place for a quick and easy lunch.

I love going here for breakfast or lunch. I've tried several sandwiches and I'm always pleased with what I order. I've never heard anyone say they've had bad food here. The staff is always friendly and attentive and the service is quick. Everyone in Toledo should try it! My favorites are the garbage salad, their O-ring sandwich, and monte cristo. Their coffee is very tasty. Don't forget to grab a garbage cookie on your way out!

My favorite restaurant in town! Everything I have tried has been delicious! Homemade from scratch Of course everyone knows about the garbage salad. I also love the grilled veggie sandwich Or the Ruben is the best I've ever had. The chili bread bowl with sour cream on a cold day is a belly warmer . And of course her desserts! P.S. Also try their breakfast Yummy

I'm not a huge fan of breakfast because I'm sort of in the group that thinks "breakfast is breakfast" (plus it never seems to really fill me up), but Grumpy's really actually seriously honestly does have a very good breakfast... at least based on what I got. I walked in with a couple friends just after 8am on a Friday, which I figured out was just when they opened. I drove past the place once because I didn't even see it, and we wound up being first ones inside. All three of us ordered the corned beef hash. Almost half an hour later, the food finally came out. I was pretty peeved that it could take thirty minutes to receive breakfast in an empty restaurant, but it turned out two people had ordered take out ahead of us. Somehow. I figure they called to make an order before they opened. Anyway, the corned beef hash -- I haven't ever had it before (don't judge, jerk), but I was pretty impressed. A good (but not gut busting) portion of potatoes and corned beef with some onions and peppers peppered throughout, two eggs of your choice, and two slices of toast for $8. Not a bad deal at all considering the quality of the food. My friends weren't all that impressed, but they also admittedly don't care for breakfast food, and are cereal guys ... I'm more of the oh-so-healthy "I just don't really ever eat breakfast" type. I was thinking about giving Grumpy's a 3 and calling it a 3.5, but I've rounded up just because I like the aesthetic of the place, and the guy serving us was a really nice dude. Too bad I didn't catch his name. Overall, I'd revisit Grumpy's and love to try something else on their fairly extensive menu. I'm not as blown away as I was expecting to be given the high rating on this site, but it was still a very good meal.

I came here for a Friday lunch, and it was packed. It seemed like a lot of people came here to eat for a lunch break at work. Overall good sign for the health of the business, and gave me the impression that people were pleased with service and food here. I had the Pollo Pesto sandwich, which was good. It was served with thin slices of chicken, pesto sauce, and peppers. The side of chips was forgettable. All-in-all, the service was and food was four star worthy. I think next time I will order a salad which I have good things about here.

Great burgers! Just make sure that you can handle spices in the food you order. Ask your server :)

  • Joshua S.

Best salad, I've ever had. Walking in I felt like I was late arriving to an awesome party. Everyone was so happy! Then I took my first bite of their "Garbage Salad"...WOW! If a salad is this good I can't wait to try the rest of the menu. It was incredible...I'm heading back again today!

  • A S.

I used to love this place, sure it has always been a bit overpriced, but it made up for it in other ways. Since "Grumpy's" children have taken over, it had gone down hill. I ordered the famous Garbage salad, and I think it this description of it will sum up the changes. The lettuce was clearly the machine cut, bagged, food service variety. It was dry, wilted, with the start of the browning around the edges from the machine cut. Lettuce cut by hand and given a cold bath is clearly better. The other ingredients were not diced as before, and the dressing once house made, is clearly now manufactured for them and bottled (they sell it that way). The price was absurd, $10 for the salad. Not going back.

I've been to Grumpy's twice -- once to take away breakfast and once to eat-in lunch. Both times the food has been great. I'm a sucker for real corned beef hash, not the canned, dog-food-esque stuff, but real chucked corned beef and real potatoes. This place has it. And. It's. Awesome. It came with eggs and toast and the whole meal was so big I saved half to eat the next day. The restauarant was sparsely populated that morning. The food was out quickly and the service was great. My second trip was for lunch. It was a Thursday over the lunch hour and the place was packed. If you've been there, you know this place has a lot of seating. But that day it was filled and had a wait. I ordered a burger. It came out properly cooked and was just as amazing as my breakfast had been. My only complaint? I wish it was closer to my office!

It pains me to give Grumpy's only 2 stars, but based on a recent experience, 2 stars is a gift. This week we went to Grumpy's for lunch. One friend ordered a Garbage Salad and requested no onions, as she is allergic to onions. My other friend ordered a Garbage Salad without mushrooms. The server dutifully recorded our orders and turned them in ... service was prompt (our food came out quickly) ... only problem, my friend who requested no mushrooms got a salad with no mushrooms and no onions. My friend who requested no onions tucked into her salad, and was enjoying it ... until she got a bite of an onion (apparently they are in a middle or bottom layer). Her reaction was swift, and if we didn't have meds on us, it would have required a trip to the hospital. While mistakes do happen, the reaction from the staff was appalling. They just took her food away and questioned what indeed was ordered (when you are severely allergic to a food, you always remember to tell your server ... and besides, we know they heard the restriction, because my other friend's salad was sans onions). Reaction from management was non-existant. Will give them another chance, and hope to revise my review when we do.

Although I checked in, too, I not only didn't get a cookie, but I couldn't get waited on. Note to self: never sit next to an employee who brings their baby in during maternity leave!

  • Katie W.

I have no complaints about Grumpy's other than the hours. I love the garbage salad and that's the only thing I've ever gotten. I would probably go there more often and try other tasty items off the menu if they were open for longer hours, hence the 4 stars instead of 5.

  • Meg K.

Don't advertise that you're open until 2:00 then tape a sign to your door that the kitchen closes at 1:45. It sends the message that cleaning up the kitchen and getting out of work promptly is more important than serving "potential" customers.

Most of the bases on this happening Toledo breakfast, brunch, and lunch spot have already been covered, so I will be brief: it is far, far too easy to get attached to one sandwich or one salad at this place. They use quality ingredients and it's all so well-executed you may find yourself ordering the same sandwich every week. I had the great fortune of spraining my ankle last night and a friend decided to surprise me with lunch. She randomly picked the Hye Roller. How many times have I looked over that item, only to roll my eyes at the cranberry sauce on the side, and go to my standard order? Holy cow, this sandwich is delicious. My other favorite is the O-Ring. I think I'm just going to start ordering mystery sandwiches here until I eat my way through their menu.

    (5)
  • Winston C.

Grumpy's always brings in the crowd and I love the busy and loud atmosphere that occurs at lunch time! The food is always delicious and the service has been spot on every time I've stopped in. My favorites are: the club wrap, mickey's chicken deluxe, scott's italian burger sub, and, yes, THE garbage salad! I only wish I could get out here more often but I don't work downtown.

  • Bill L.

I would like to give Grumpy's a higher review. But I can't. Went there for breakfast on a cold morning while visiting from out of town. I see they have homemade corned beef hash. I'm all about good CB hash. Service was just so-so. I had an iced tea as I needed some caffeine but did not want to sip coffee. Can you say hangover? My iced tea glass was empty for awhile and I had to ask for a refill. Also, no lemon. Who serves iced tea without a lemon? -1 Corned beef hash was not really hash at all. It was just home fries with coarse chopped corned beef tossed on a griddle. What I was served was NOT corned beef hash. I realize there are many different interpretations on the dish. This was a poor interpretation. I prefer my hash with a couple poached eggs on the top. The server says, "how do you want your eggs, over easy?" Okay fine. I guess they can't do poached, which in my opinion is the traditional way of serving hash. -1 I took away another star as I was served my breakfast without having any silverware on the table. Had to ask for silverware and a napkin. -1 I see there are higher reviews here. If I were in the area again I would certainly give them another chance. The menu looked inspired and I like the setting.

  • Amanda G.

Love it here! I try to get something new each time I visit and I have yet to be anything less than thrilled. Must try: garbage salad, turkey burger, and grilled Ruben, and any kind of dessert you can - YUM. Drawbacks: parking is tight especially on game days, and add-ons are on the expensive side for the amount you get. Overall- definitely worth a visit!

  • Jordan K.

This place gets five stars because they keep things creative and have a no-nonsense approach to getting people in and out in the busy weekday lunch hour. I wish Grumpy's could be open for brunch well into the afternoon on Saturdays and of course on Sundays, but no one in Toledo is holding their breath waiting for THAT to happen! (Keep 'em wanting MORE!!!) Much appreciated are veggie friendly items like the sweet potato/avocado burger. It's super-filling and pretty good for you, too. And, I'm going to be the 8,000th person on Yelp to declare love for the garbage salad. I loooove it. Haven't had breakfast because I am just not ever up that early (my loss).

  • Leea R.

Decided to try this place based on reviews but after getting in and seated we quickly left. They only had 3 items on the childrens menu, even though they serve pizza they could not make one for a child. I also was not impressed with the cleanliness of the establishment.

To preface my review, I'm not a salad person. I like my meals to have a certain substance that most salads lack. The Garbage Salad is not most salads. It's delicious, filling, and even intoxicating. I absolutely love it. If my wallet would permit, I would have this salad every single day for the rest of my life.

This is the best lunch restaurant in Toledo. Just rented an office across the street; have been to Grumpy's on four occasions so far. Service is prompt and friendly, menu is very diverse, prices are reasonable. I felt compelled to review them today after having what was among the best sandwiches I have ever eaten, the tuna steak sandwich on a gluten-free bun. The tuna had a great grilled flavor to it and was perfectly seared, the sauce was perfect, and the bun was homemade, flaky, and biscuit-like. Every meal I've had there has been great. We've gotten in the habit of scheduling our meetings so that they end just in time for us to get to Grumpy's before a line forms.

The garbage salad is pretty good! I don't usually like raisins in my salad but they taste pretty good in the salad. They put a lot of dressing on it so next time I'll probably ask for the dressing on the side. But the dressing is delicious! The chili was pretty good but didn't taste very homemade to me. I'm not sure how to describe it but the tomato taste seemed very canned as opposed to homemade. It's not very kid friendly because they don't really have much on their kid menu- I think they only had 3 items on it. They do give free cookies to kids! The great thing is that they have a private parking lot. Seems like a great place to eat on a lunch break if you work downtown!

  • Jennifer S.

Sandwich, Salad, Wrap sort of place with fantastic reviews... My friend and I yelped this place and it was not bad. It definitely wasn't an ultimate favorite for me because I ordered the Hawaiian Wrap which is ham, cheddar cheese, and pineapples. Wasn't a fan of the wrap because the pineapples weren't grilled...and I heart grilled pineapples. My friend LOVED her "Garbage Salad" though. The Poppyseed Dressing is two thumbs up and a lesser known fact is that they SELL said dressing in small ($4), medium ($6), and large ($8) sizes. Yayyyy~ Loved the cookie from the check-in ...minus 1 star for not grilling the pineapple, but 4 stars for great service, selling dressing, yummy cookies, and the garbage salad. :)

Garbage Salad. TO-GO. A large was more than enough to fill me up for lunch that day, and the following day. Because it doesn't matter if your breath reeks of red onions afterwards. And no, chewing 3 pieces of your favorite gum doesn't really make it go away. So try to cover all your daily conversations in the morning before your lunch break. Ordered a couple of salads for pick-up on a weekday lunch rush for myself and the coworkers who absolutely adore this place. Experience was super smooth- guy who took my order was overwhelmingly friendly even in the middle of the rush- and was very patient with me when I kept calling to add-on orders. They have ample parking in the a lot and in the street which is a plus. You also get a free cookie if you check-in on Yelp or Foursquare! Place looked really lively and hospitable. I shall return...to try it all.

Go to try their grumpy salad- bit unique for some one eating salads from SF to NY to Chicago to Minnesota...u will remember it for a while and their turkey burger is another gem...this is one place I always go when in Toledo or going to BGSU for work.

Irony. IRONY, I say!! Grumpy's is chock full of irony! How so? Well... The restaurant's name itself is quite ironic, because nobody in the place seems to be the least bit petulant! Rather, the staff is friendly, cool, helpful and FAST! I get seated quickly, my order gets taken quickly, and the food comes quickly. Helpful? Yep. This most recent time in, one of the ladies in the front even noticed that I fed some quarters into the parking meter (like I always did!) On my way out, she was so kind as to tell me that during the week, I didn't need to pay. Nice. Want more irony? How about name of their best known item: "The Garbage Salad." Now, I've eaten garbage salads that actually do taste like refuse, but Grumpy's rendition certainly isn't one of them. It's awesome, in fact. Great combo of flavors and textures. And, it's filling enough that it certainly stands alone as a meal. Had enough irony yet? No? Well then here's some more. I lived in South Florida for years, YET, (possibly) THE best Cuban Sandwich variation that I've eaten is made right here in T-Town! Grumpy's "The Babalu" has become so ingrained in my consciousness that I can't drive down South Huron without thinking of either Desi Arnez or Renato Sobral. The bun, in my opinion is actually better than the Cuban bread used in the original version, and the addition of mayo really seems to help! Throw in super fast service, hip atmosphere and pretty good prices, and we've got a winner here! There are, however, two things that I'd like to see from Grumpy's: Weekend breakfast/brunch, and, a Glass City version of the muffaletta named, perhaps, "The Phoebus?"

I was in town for a conference and didn't have a car so I was limited as to where I could go, luckily this was within a walk. Plenty of items on the menu and I opted for the BLT, which was not a double decker and came with fries. Nothing too big so if you're looking for a big sandwich get a burger. The table next to me had them and they looked big and tasty! I was delighted to get a free cookie for checking in - it's the little things!

I was visiting Toledo as part of a company event, my very first time in the city, and I wanted to go somewhere good for lunch, and Grumpy's was recommended to me by the woman at the front desk, and it was extremely close by, so I decided to try it out Best. Decision. Ever. (Seriously) I've been a vegetarian for my entire life, almost 20 years now, and finding really, really good vegetarian food in the midwest has been a pain in my behind ever since I figured out how much I love food. I had their vegetarian burger with avocado, a side of coleslaw, with some pesto basil dressing on the side that I still have dreams about. The food was amazing. Honestly, one of the best veggie burgers I have ever had. It wasn't tough or crumbly or dry, it was perfectly seasoned and the flavors simply melted together on the inside, while the outside had a little crispy texture to it. The service was extremely fast. I was eating alone while reading a book, and I was in and out of there in 20 minutes flat during the most extreme lunch rush I have ever seen at a restaurant. The restaurant was packed, but the staff was extremely well equipped to handle everything that was thrown at them. There was never a moment when I couldn't find my waiter or I didn't have water and wanted some. Normally I dine alone with a book, and most restaurants ignore people like me, because we don't complain about much, and we also are very low maintenance and don't ask of much, Grumpy's blew me out of the water. They were always there, very friendly, and always with a smile, even if they were just refilling my glass of water. The thing that makes me remember Grumpy's more than any other restaurant that I have visited in the past is their ending moment, right as I was leaving. I had paid for my food, and was standing at the register, and the man behind the counter was simply talking to me. I told him that I had a wonderful experience at the restaurant, and he handed me my receipt and a very warm, very gooey cookie off the shelf behind him, and said it was on the house, fresh baked about 2 minutes ago. I walked out of there, went window shopping for a while, eating this warm homemade cookie that left behind a chocolate mess all over my fingers, but was hands down, one of the best restaurant experiences I have ever had. If I am ever back in Toledo, it will be the very first place I go to get something to eat.

I love Grumpy's. I have been here a few times and each time it has been wonderful. The ambiance is homey, but not too small and tight. There is plenty of seating...and they have wifi with outlets behind just about every table so that you can plug in devices, just in case. The service is top notch and I have never been disappointed. At the same time, though, there isn't someone at your table in your face constantly asking if you want something. The menu has tons of selections...anything you can have a taste for, they probably have it. Even when they have been busy, they have moved quite smoothly and I have never had to wait long, or at all. I finally tried a cheeseburger last week. It was OUTSTANDING! The way the meat was seasoned was delicious and the bun was just right, soft, buttery, and not soggy. I have had a few of their deli sandwiches and salads before and all tasted perfectly fresh and were stacked perfectly. Their potato salad is good...almost like eating it at home with the redskin potatoes. They have soooo much on the menu that I look forward to visiting to try more.

Currently my favorite lunch spot in downtown Toledo. I hate it when places supposedly have a famous dish but Grumpy's really does... the garbage salad is delicious and becoming a Toledo staple. They rock out burgers and sandwiches named after their roots of being a hardware store. Everything is from scratch. They also have awesome baked goods like pies and cookies. The building they are in provides a unique atmosphere unlike any one else. Lunches are very busy and they handle it well. So there is history, great food and a cool location. My favorite is the sweet potato burger with kale chips and a small garbage salad on the side. Its a lot of food but well worth it! Watch the Smash Toledo Video on Grumpy's: youtu.be/SeFxAZmiMR8

I'm a little bewildered by the success of Grumpy's. This has nothing to do with the wonderful food or great staff, but rather with menu selection. I consider Grumpy's to be the last stronghold of unique flavors in Toledo. Many newer restaurants pushing the taste envelop have gone the way of the Dodo in this city. On to the review. The ambiance is quite amazing. A converted loft-style, all wooden restaurant is always impressive. It is a bit strange having to stroll through the kitchen and pre-prepped food to get to the bathrooms at the back. BEWARE: the floor is exceptionally slick near the kitchen and I almost executed a perfect split that any Russian gymnast would have been jealous of. The food is very reasonably priced and the taste is outstanding. I frequent Grumpy's for brunch and I have yet to eat anything that didn't leave me satisfied. Combinations that I wouldn't expect to go together wage all-out flavor war on my tongue. It is a beautiful thing. The service is also very good. The waitstaff is extremely courteous. The cashier has always tried to have numerous conversations with customers about anything under the sun. I had about a 15 minute talk about art in Toledo and learned many new things about this city. Overall, Grumpy's THE place to go for brunch, not only for great food, but for a wonderful experience.

Great Place! Fantastic Garbage Salad! Great sandwhiches and good cookies! If you go on weekdays at lunch time, you may have to wait a few minutes but it is ALWAYS worth the wait! One of Toledo's best places!

this place is definitely a go-to lunch spot! Had take out here once but the food got cold before I had a chance to try it. Next time we ate in and the food was delicious. Service is also very good and the environment is fun and inviting. Make sure you let them know its your first time to get a free cookie!

Nicely done!!!! The word is obviously out because this place was packed an hour before closing but all previous reviews rang true for us: 1. Food was utterly fab!! Yes, go with the Garbage Salad, even if the description sounds uninspiring. They are known for this salad for good reason. People who don't like salad will like this one. And yes, the house made veggie burger could pass for a meatloaf sandwich for most of the crowd! Wonderful! That mile high coconut cream pie was out of this world and we got the last piece, thank you God. 2. They were totally rocking and the waitress retained a sense of humor and compassion for those waiting in lines. I give her a lot of credit running down those stairs. (and I gave her a lot of tip too) Next time, breakfast! (stops at 11:00).

Downtown Toledo doesn't have a lot to offer in fresh and fun meals. Luckily this place is good enough and the menu is expansive enough that if you ate there for a week, you'd still be impressed. Unfortunately for me, I get stuck on such good menu items that I barely manage to delve into other treats! Co...co...nut.... cream pie. I never had coconut cream pie until this place, and it put me on a sample quest at other restaurants, but this one is the best. Really nice chewy big chunks of coconut through out the cream center, a light crust that I've never experienced to be burnt or dry. Perfect amount of topping to center, big enough slice that sure you could share, but why bother. That moment when you take your fork and cut just the triangle tip off the end of the pie? Best. It can get loud inside, so if you have a mother with poor hearing, maybe treat her to the slightly quieter breakfast hour. And yes, as people say in other reviews, IT IS BUSY. Without a dinner hour and with business people downtown as weekly frequenters, it tends to give you a little standing time waiting for a seat. Grumpy's staff is very attentive at getting you seated as soon as possible, though. The Garbage Salad is pretty good and a nice sized portion. Jamaican Jerk Club is aweeeeeeesome. I also have to say I wish a lot of local restaurants would take a look at Grumpy's interior design and decor. It's modern enough without being too modern to feel cold, and it makes good use of it's space per the volume of customers. One last thing, I love their apple pie. They keep it just on the narrow path between being sweet and the slight crisp sour of an apple. I never like apple pie that is covered in sugar and frosting. This does it just right, and boy is it sky high in thickness.

Grumpy's First of all I like the name of the restaurant. I came up to see a friend of mine, was looking forward to eating at Tony Pacho's. my friend did not want to eat there. So he told me, that he heard great raves about Grumpy's. So we had lunch there. I asked them what's the most popular dish, the waitress said" garbage salad". I am not really a salad person, so I took her advise and ordered it. WOW!!! That's all I can say. The dressing was great. I love all the different stuff inside the salad. The portion of the salad was huge. Well we liked it so much. We ate there again the next day. I ordered the smaller garbage salad and chili. The chili tasted like real chili...hmmmm. When I come back to Downtown Toledo, I am going to come back here again.

A jewel of a local restaurant - authentic, hand crafted food catering to local clientele. Had a breakfast here with the fam and everyone loved it. Hubby gives thumbs up to the corned beef hash!

I don't remember Grumpy's being in existence from my old college days in Toledo, but I was recently in town conducting a training session for work, and needed a place to eat over lunch for myself and five other co-workers. After reading the other reviews, we decided Grumpy's was the place for us, and boy were we right! A few of my co-workers tried the Garbage Salad, per the recommendations of other Yelpers. All of them said it lived up to the vaunted reputation that it had been given. I on the other hand opted for the option to do the Build Your Own Sandwich option. I had turkey breast on an onion poppy seed bun with muenster cheese, and because it sounded exotic and unique; raspberry honey mustard. First of all, HUGE bonus points for Grumpy's having muenster cheese. I love this stuff, and could eat an entire cheese block of it like a candy bar. It's almost impossible to find restaurants that serve muenster, but Grumpy's pulled it off! The raspberry honey mustard had me curious as to how it would taste. I was glad to find out that the raspberry taste did not overpower the flavor of the turkey breast, muenster cheese, or the onion poppy seed bun. Instead, it just made all of those flavors pop even more! Definitely give the raspberry honey mustard a shot down the road. It's just that amazing! Also huge bonus points for getting my group and I out of there in under 35 minutes.

Woohoo! 5-star in Toledo! Went there for lunch. Had the warm cobb salad (noticed it on the grill) and the grilled tuna steak sandwich. The salad was excellent - presentation and taste. The sandwich was the best I'd ever had of that type (grilled tuna). Service was very good. The place was full at lunch - with a short waiting line. Nice looking place - wide open.. full of people enjoying lunch. I highly recommend. I will definitely return for many more lunches.

This is a sad rating and review for the only place to get breakfast in downtown Toledo. If I was only rating the quality and freshness of the food itself, I'd probably give more like 4 stars. I went two days in a row when in town, and the french toast and homemade corned beef hash were both really tasty. Unfortunately, the waiter (we had the same guy both days, and seems to be the only one with that responsibility) lives up to the name of the place. To boot, on top of being Grumpy, he was slow. And not just leisurely slow, but like absurdly slow. On the second day we went, recognizing the pace of the day before, I attempted to get ahead a little by suggesting that we were ready to order food when he took our coffee order (10 minutes after we sat down) but no, he wasn't ready for that. I got a mouthful about how busy he was--he acted like he was in the weeds when the place was barely 1/4 full. Ultimately, I was really just worried for the place since we were there for pre-conference activities, and a conference of 1200 people was about to descend upon them the following day. For most businesses this would be a good problem to have, but this place just didn't seem like it had what it takes to handle such demand--I hope I'm wrong. Finally, the coffee was pretty bad. But, since I was in Toledo for 3 days and didn't have a halfway decent cup of coffee anywhere, I can't really hold it against Grumpy's alone. Must be a regional thing. Bottom line, don't go here when it's legitimately busy, don't go here when you might need to be somewhere. If you like good food served up with a douche attitude and barely tolerable coffee, this is the place for you.

I was expecting so much out of this place, maybe too much in that I forgot that I was in Toledo and not San Francisco (my mistake). I had the garbage salad as it came highly recommended. And it was good, but it wasn't blow-your-mind good. It was pretty empty when I was there, only one or two other tables were occupied, but the service was friendly and attentive. Our meal ended with a freshly baked cranberry and chocolate chip cookie that was for sale behind the register. That was the highlight of the experience. I will go back there and try other menu items.

Grumpy's is my favorite lunch spot in Downtown Toledo! Whenever I get to choose a spot for a lunch meeting, I pick Grumpy's! It's always packed but service is usually fast. The Garbage Salad is as good as everyone says it is. The poppyseed dressing is addictive and all those cheeses work so well together. It's a huge salad, but you'd better believe I can eat every bite. It's hard for me to try other things on the menu because the Garbage Salad is so good! Once, I branched out and got the sweet potato "burger" (with a Garbage side salad) and it was good, but a bit hard to eat - the potato patty didn't keep it's shape. Points for creativity, though! The kale chips were tasty, too. I've only tried the Garbage Cookie for dessert but it was a great mix of flavored and textures. I hope to tackle the dessert case soon!

Grumpys is my fav spot in Toledo! Obviously the garbage salad is amazing but everything on the menu is delicious! You can make your own breakfast sandwich! I always get great service and the staff is friendly. Definitely 5 stars and not to be missed!

Grumpy's is so good that I've considered moving back to Toledo just so I can have their sandwhiches on a consistent basis. Oh, and the apple pie.... I have never had an apple pie that is anywhere as good as Grumpy's. I have a hard time eating dessert anywhere else because it doesn't even come close. I can't wait for my next trip to Toledo! Also, great ambiance and location.

My friends and I took a long roadtrip to Michigan from out east, and we'd been told by quite a few folks that we should try Grumpy's in Toledo. I am SO glad we listened. We dropped by for lunch and while it was extremely busy, it was well worth the wait. I ordered the Babalu and got to try some of my friend's dishes (specifically one of Grumpy's burgers and the garbage salad). My sandwich was on point, the burger was amazing and that salad blew my mind. I don't think I've had a tastier dressing in my life. I live in a city with quite a few renowned eateries and I am *still* thinking about the food I had at Grumpy's. It was that good.

Tasty little place, glad we stopped on our way through Toledo! Loved my grilled chicken sandwich. My mom loved her garbage salad (portion size was HUGE). And my husband enjoyed his pulled pork sliders (though the portion size on that meal was a little on the skimpy side.) Be sure to do a Yelp check-in for a free cookie, and check-in on Foursquare for a loyalty reward of some sort!

There was a lot of interesting stuff on the menu that I would have liked to try today, but didn't. I Split the garbage salad and the Scott's Italian Burger Sub. Both were meh. Serving sizes were great, but the overall taste was nothing special for me. The quality of the burger meat seemed good and fresh, but just lacked flavor. The bun was nice and toasty but again not too special; the cheese and marinara sauce also didn't do much to complement the burger. I wouldn't recommend this. The salad just kind of lacked the kick that makes you want to keep eating. Maybe that's just the nature of poppy seed dressing. The chicken and croutons on the salad tasted good though (not enough to carry the meal for me... unfortunately) The place did offer a great ambience, service and layout and would make a great place to hang out and talk after eating. If you check in with yelp, you get a free cookie, which was pretty good (soft and crispy).

  • Brent Z.

Went there for lunch and had the chicken sandwich. The piece of chicken was very thin and it was definitely too small of a meal for me. The food was excellent, but I definitely expected some more meat. The people working there were all very nice and the free cookie for checking in on yelp was a nice bonus. Next time, I'll try something different.

The Garbage Salad was delicious! My boyfriend likes their Seared Tuna Sandwich....but the cashier at the place told us they're removing it from their menu soon due to to the soaring price of tuna. Bummer.

Love this place. I've been here a few times for lunch and I like to choose something different each time (they have a ton of options). So far my favorite is the mazal tov . The staff have always been friendly and the service was quick too. I also like their garbage cookie which is a combo of all of their other cookies. I only wish they were open for dinner too so I could go more often.

Not cheap. Not kid-friendly. Nor do they put up with nonsense (put your cellphone away when paying your tab, etc). BUT... the food is AMAZING. The "garbage salad" is famous. Burgers are incredible. And the menu is full of deliciously creative sandwiches. My fave is the grilled veggie on veggie bread. The cookies (pick them up on your way out) are deeeeelish. The portions are LARGE, so be prepared to leave full. One last note: Are you living a GLUTEN-free life? They have gluten-free soups, breads, buns, granola bars... all yummy.

This place is for the hipster crowd of Toledo, and I love it. I went there and the ambience and decor is amazing, I really enjoyed the atmosphere. I heard so much about the Garbage Salad that they have, that I had to try it. The garbage salad was Super Good and is probably the best salad that I have ever had. A friend of mine got a buffalo chicken wrap (which was just okay), but she deserves it for not getting the salad. Would definitely love to go back once I get more free time during lunch.

Grumpy's makes my favorite kind of apple pie: apple stacked thick and high with none of that syrupy saucy crap...just lots of cinnamon and a soft delicious crust. The only thing that could make it better was if they peeled the apples first. I didn't try any of their other pies, but they all looked amazing. I also had the Bacon Cheeseburger, which was cooked to order perfectly. It's nice to find a place that will make you a medium-rare burger. Grilled onions were a great addition, but they are long string-cut, so it was a little hard to take bites of.

Working on their third generation of ownership. The start of the business is interesting; as a hardware store! Located in a nice building near the Mudhen's ball park. Food is ok, but really nothing special. BEWARE: they close at 2pm....and they do a good job of hustling you out at that time. For a decent deli sandwich in downtown Toledo, check it out. There aren't too many other choices.

Get a Garbage Salad - your tastebuds will thank you! I've used Grumpy's take out several times for business lunches because clients would specifically request it - always a good sign. I recently finally had the chance to eat in the restaurant and I was super impressed with the service. Immediately sat down, order was taken quickly and even though the restaurant was at capacity we still received our food in less than 5 minutes.

Grumpy's is a local treasure, hands down! Everything on the menu is delicious and more than satisfying. Though, it's a bit pricey. The Sawbuck (grilled corned beef and pastrami with swiss), The Tub (a stuffed sub with ham, turkey, etc), and the Reuben are easily some of the best sandwiches available in the city. The Hi-Roller is a sliced turkey-cranberry wrap served with jam, and it's fantastic. The chili is a must get, it's rich and tomatoey with a real jalopeno kick! The salmon sandwiches are also excellent (the Mazeltov, I think one is called), and of course, the legendary Garbage Salad hits the spot every time. Grumpy's also makes fantastic cookies, be sure to grab one on your way out. Best of all, the building is cool and cozy in it's own way, and the servers are friendly and efficient, despite the moniker. Everyone should lunch at Grumpy's when they can.

Unfortunately, I cannot say much about the great food that I've been hearing about from other reviewers because it was not a very good first impression. Me and my fiance were visiting her dad in Toledo and decided to check out this small lunch place after seeing the rave reviews on my Yelp app while at his apartment near the city. We were not starving so it wasn't a must if we could not get a table, per the warnings I read prior. We headed tio downtown Toledo in search of this local icon and found it very quickly. Great parking lot has plenty of room at any time. As warned, the place was packed like a madhouse nearing noon on the clock but we decided to head in anyway and see how long it would be to wait for a table. Walking in the second door we could not help notice how Grumpy's was very full and noisy. And I mean NOISY loud!! We were looked at we a very straight face by the welcome department was the hello was far from warm, which would explain why the place got it's name? We decided that the feel was not fit for the mood at that point and walked away before we could regret it. Unfortunately, I cannot ad any ravings to the fantastic food I heard about but I (and my guests) do not like feeling as if we're bothering the "grumpy" staff by asking for a favor of getting our name on the waiting list. We just walked across the street to Quimby's and had a much more quiet lunch instead.

With an expansive menu of traditional favorites and wonderful salads Grumpy's is easily the best place for lunch in Toledo. I've probably ordered the garbage salad 30 times in the last 6 months. Their babalu is amazing and be sure to order some extra garlic mayo on the side. Portabella mushroom sandwich is also one of my favorites. Everything is made with care and the dishes have a very home cooked feel to them. It gets pretty crowded during lunch but the wait is never longer than 5 minutes. If only they would serve bkfst later!

Thank you fellow Yelpers! My boyfriend and I were in Toledo for one night on our way to Chicago, and you lead me to this wonderful spot. The space is great, and the service was wonderful. I had the Mazel Tov, and as someone who eats bagels w/lox and cream cheese on a regular basis, I was quite impressed by the horseradish cream cheese - not too spicy, and a really great touch. When we didn't finish our coffee, our waiter asked if we wanted to-go cups. We said yes, and expected to pour our coffee into them. However, he gave us two full to-go cups of their delicious coffee. Mmmm...

I've been to Grumpy's plenty, and it's always been great, but today was better than ever. I had the grilled tuna steak sandwich and it was hands-down the best tuna steak I've ever had--cooked perfectly med rare just as advertised on the menu. The homemade Cajun mayo was amazing, and the sandwich was a good deal at 10 bucks. I also split the fruit tortellini salad with someone, and it was excellent. Cheese tortellini with fruit and poppyseed dressing sounded odd to me, but it was delicious and light, and was a perfect side for the tuna steak sandwich. Although we got carryout today, the service in the past has always been fantastic and we always love seeing Dustin behind the counter. I highly recommend a stop by Grumpy's. It's definitely the best lunch spot in Toledo.

My family loves Grumpy's, the kids especially. We mostly go for breakfast; Jen's special breakfast wrap (add some avocado) is an amazing breakfast choice. The kids find the french toast addictive and the morning bun is to die for. The staff is friendly and helpful, the morning server shows up with a hot cup of strong coffee without me having to order because he always remembers us. If you are ever in Toledo check this place out, you will leave satisfied!

I've been here twice but you have to really be there frequently to try out all their offerings in the menu. I've had Garbage Salad and the Hawaiian Wrap, it is beyond delicious! Food is pricey but well worth it.

This is a can't miss spot. Love this place. Try Ivan's homemade veggie burger... It is glorious. Had the morning bun as well, it is like half cinnamon muffin, half croissant... and apparently they are making them into french toast for breakfast. On my dessert tour, I also had the key lime pie... freshly made, perfect crust. I cannot say enough good things about the food, the atmosphere, and the staff.

I have been dying to try this place and made sure to come early to do so cause around 12 the place was PACKED! I had to try the garbage salad of course and it was soooo good. I usually am really picky about my salads, naturally wanting it to be low in cal but I made an exception for this. Surprisingly all the diff cheeses and especially the dressing made it phenomenal. I had a cookie also and it was great. I came back again for breakfast and did the build ur own and it was a ton of food(but I also picked all the toppings) and I'm a sucker for anything that contains avacado. I also ordered a morning bun with the spread which was delish! The morning bun had a little too much sugar for my taste but all in all everything was amazing!
