Harold’s New York Deli Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

I was in the Edison Hotel on business and ventured into Harold's at lunchtime, I was immediately seated. Harold's is very brightly lit and decorated with a combination of Jewish deli, 80s diner and grandma's basement. Yeah, it needs a facelift....BAD! I checked the menu and "WOWWWWW!!!" Prices are insane, the cheapest thing I found was a knish at $12, sandwiches as much as $50. The waiter came, I ordered a $25 pastrami lean (bad move) and he directed me to the pickle bar. The pickle bar is a nice touch w a few different types of whole and sliced pickles and a very nice vinegar slaw. Extra bread is also available at the pickle bar, a good touch considering the amount of meat on sandwiches. When the sandwich arrived it was gigantic, the slaw from the pick bar was awesome and the mayo slaw it came w was one of the best I've had. The sandwich was so big I didn't know where to start, I manipulated the sandwich so I could get a bite, the meat was very dry (this is clearly my fault), tasty but dry. All in all I enjoyed the sandwich, I wish I would've got regular pastrami and I took half of it home and split the remainder w my wife for that night'a dinner. The cakes too are gigantic, I didn't try any but they looked pretty damn good. I'm going to give them another try, u should too.

I went here whilw in Edison NJ for work. The seminar was in the hotel where the deli was located, and I couldn't resist another Man vs Food spot. I dropped in, and knowing their portions got a large pastrami sandwich to go. It came with half a loaf of rye bread, 4 pickles, mustard, and some cole slaw. The smell of it on the way home made me hungry! Worth every penny of $25! This is what pastrami is suppose to be. Flavorful and moist and huge portions! The best rye bread I've ever had. Even the cole-slaw is legit. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I didn't really care for the pickles, but my boyfriend loved them. Would definitely go back!!!

Pretty blown away by my experience at Harold's. This is like every Jewish deli I've ever been to...but on steroids. Serious, monstrous, sandwiches the size of your head that would be physically impossibly to conquer alone. Actually, serious, monstrous-sized everything at Harold's. I was in the area for business and found this gem on Yelp, it was actually in my hotel's parking lot which made me a little skeptical, until I got inside. We were seated right away and our waiter came over to take our order and tell us about the pickle bar. Yes, pickle bar. For anyone who loves Jewish delis, this is an absolute dream. Before your meal arrives, you can head over to the pickle bar and sample around 10 kinds of pickles. All were delicious, such a fun way to start the meal. Seeing enormous sandwiches come out of the kitchen, we understood you're meant to split sandwiches. Which actually makes sense because each costs the price of two sandwiches. We went with a half corned beef and half pastrami. Please reference my photo for a glimpse of this sandwich, it was truly huge. The meats were perfectly cooked and I loved that the sandwich came with plenty of cole slaw and tasty mustard on the side. We also shared a potato pancake, which size resembled a frisbee. We weren't close to finishing either of the comically-sized menu items. Overall, had a very delicious sandwich, potato pancake, and loved the unique feature of the pickle bar. Service was quick and sharing is a requirement here! If you're in the Edison area, I definitely recommend Harold's!

There are several rules for eating here. Once you abide, I'm sure you will agree it is amazing. Don't listen to my rules? Don't say I didn't warn you. 1. Sharing is Caring! Portions are MEANT to be shared between 2 (if you're huge and gluttonous and burn thousands of calories a day at your job) to 4 (if you like reasonable-sized portions and order sides) people. I went with 2 other people, and the 3 of us shared 1 sandwich and an order of fries and we still had enough meat leftover for a fourth sandwich. 1a. The side orders and drinks are massive as well. 2. The pickles at the pickle bar are great but the "health salad" - aka pickled cabbage and other veggies - is AMAZING. Stock up on that to eat with your sandwich! 3. Don't shy away if you are vegetarian. There are veg friendly options here. I didn't say they were healthy, but they are meatless. 4. Pastrami on rye will not disappoint. Get it. 5. Corned beef is good too. Get that next time. 6. Desserts and milk shakes looked overkill. Save room for the sandwich. 7. Fries were amazing, hot, and well seasoned. A nice add-on if you dare! All in all - a place for huge NY deli-style sandwiches at a fraction of the price (per person) and decent quality. AYCE pickle bar a major plus!

I have to parrot the review of Louis Z. He gave it one star,I'm giving it two, simply because the rye bread is delicious. All the food is high on quantity & low on quality. The bathroom, which is in the hotel is disgusting. When voicing a complaint to the staff in the restaurant, you're told that they have nothing to do with the bathroom, complain to the hotel. This is no Katzs or Mill Basin Deli.

Love Love love this place. Only good for groups or a poor student who wants to take out a sandwich for a whole week. It has the jewish deli feel that all of us new yorkers and new jerseyans love. Everything is so good.

Wow, I have eaten at many deli's ( Stage, Carnegie and Katz ) in my life but nothing like this. The food was super fresh and over the top huge. Three of us ordered 2 sandwiches the corned beef and pastrami and split them with the fries and onion ring combo. We had way to much food. The quality was spot on and the service was right on point. A must stop when in the area. The prices ( $25 per sandwich ) are expensive but remember the sandwich will feed 3 to four people easily. Really good!!

This place was awesome and what a wonderful experience the pastrami was excellent better than any place I've ever had & the portions was huge. Everything was huge on the menu they encouraged to share the pickle bar was banging a definite must try I would definitely bring myself and my family back there again many many times

What can I say but bring your family friends enemies ( they need to eat too) the portions of food is more than one or two or three or even ten could eat!!! I think the prices are a little high even though you get enough food for an army. Enjoy.

A bit tricky to find. Use this address; 1173 KING GEORGES POST RD. EDISON, NJ. 08837 Do not use the woodbridge ave address, like I did, which will have you driving by the establishment at 60mph on 287, yikes! Parking lot is near a couple of hotels and in the back of a building. The location is a bit unsuspecting, but well worth the ordeal! The portions are huge, to say the least. The matzo ball soup, large 2-Meat Combo sandwich, and one slice of chocolate mousse cake were filling enough for 4 people.. with leftovers! Don't forget the pickle bar! The soup and sandwich were amazing! Nice and fresh! Our party of 4 devoured it family-style. However, the cake, which was most likely was kept in the refrigerator for a bit, was a tad dry. But hey, I bet it's difficult to keep a cake of that size moist for more than a day after it was made. I would skip the cake next time. Overall, it's a great place. Come here hungry, in a group, and ready to share, for an over-the-top new york deli experience!

Get ready to get a TON of food if you come here! I had never been here before, but my coworkers, who had been here before, were talking about how wondrous this place was! So my coworker and I decide to split the Super Italian Hero. Just half of it was huge! I liked the variety of meats on the hero....and the pickle bar was amazing! They had these pieces of onion bread that were so fluffy and tasty. I only got to try this pickled salad thing, the hot pickle chips, and these whole baby dill and sour pickles. They were all delicious and if our sandwich wasn't so huge, I would have gotten more pickles! Onward to dessert.....so I got the rice pudding since on the menu it said "Our famous rice pudding with raspberry topping." It was just ok. It wasn't bad, but there was nothing that make it stand out from other rice puddings that I've had. My coworkers shared the carrot cake, which was ridiculously tall! I think there were 5 normal-sized pieces of cake in that one slice! Was it the best carrot cake I've ever had? No - the cake part itself wasn't bad, but the icing might have been too sugary for me and could have used more cream cheese. I'd love to come back here and try their other sandwiches and eat more pickles!

  • Lee L.

Was there last night, had the pastrami sandwich always the best. My boyfriend tried the potato pancake for the first time and he loved it. And don't forget the cheesecake to go!

  • Austin L.

What an amazing restaurant!!! Food is phenomenal and tasteful! Service was quick (once you are seated). You can not leave the restaurant hungry because the servings are huge. It's a great place to go with friends and family but order within reason otherwise you will be going home with food for 2 weeks.

    (5)
  • Lauren M.

The food is great (I don't need to mention the whole shareable portions thing), and the service is fast and very friendly. It's just so LOUD in the restaurant that it's hard to have a conversation with the people at your own table. Still, lots of fun and a unique experience.

  • Cathy Y.

If one of those traveling restaurant critics/tastetesters havent come here, I'm not sure why!! This is such a fun and casual place to eat...A LOT. I always go with a group and we always get the pastrami.. we want to try their other sandwiches but the pastrami is ..so..good! I don't get pastrami sandwiches anywhere else but here. I've had one of their huge cakes too ... wish I remembered which but I was probably in such a food coma. Salad/pickle/pepper bar? Who else has that? I don't know of anyone else with that great of a combination! When you go here, you are surrounded by a great time.. the place is filled with conversation and nice employees. Bring an empty stomach.. or two with you!

This deli was the best deli I've ever been to. The quantity and quality of the deli sandwiches and beefs were pristine. The value is good considering one sandwich could feed a family, but it isn't cheap so don't expect a cheap meal (unless you go with several people). Overall the experience and ambience was great!

    (5)
  • Tara S.

Holy portion sizes! They encourage people to share all their entrees, so bring a friend and don't let the high prices deter you. You'll eat like a king and STILL bring home leftovers. I got the matzoh ball soup to share with my boss. I know it's weird to get soup in the summer but our office is so cold, it totally works. It comes as one GIANT matzoh ball that you just section off into your bowl. Highly recommended!

It's impossible to leave Harold's unstuffed and unsatisfied. Even if you bring a group of friends, everyone will be stuffed and take something home with them. The price might seem steep initially but when you see how much food you're getting you will be amazed. I picked up a pastrami sandwich on a road trip and everyone in the car had at least two sandwiches and we still had meat and condiments left over.

A friend and I came here on a whim after he told me how big the portions are. I was assuming the portions would be comparable to Katz's in the city. Boy was I wrong. I have never seen such a lopsided meat to bread ratio. Two thin tiny slices of rye can't even hope to contain the massive amount of pastrami, brisket, corned beef etc, shoved into one order. This would be a problem if they didn't give you extra bread, but since they do, this whole system really makes a ton of sense. One regular is more than enough to feed two big, hungry dudes. As far as the actual taste of the food, the pastrami is awesome (though not as good as Katz's), but the brisket was quite bland. The rye was on point, as were the fries and onion rings we ordered. I'm not a big fan of pickles so I can't speak about how good the free pickle bar was, but my friend said it was excellent. The service was good and the ambience was typical Jewish deli fare. Give it a shot if for nothing else, then just to see how big the portions are.

  • David R.

The size of the sandwiches here are rediculous!!! I ordered a BLT and had enough to take home and make 2 more... A basic heart attack waiting to happen... The cakes are rediculous as well. Will be back soon enough

  • Elie M.

I come here every six months when I visit my kids. Wouldn't ever miss it! The portions are not only huge but the quality and flavor are just as big. The corned beef is as good as you'll get anywhere. Fabulous pickle bar with about 5 or 6 different types of pickles plus a great pickled coleslaw, pickled tomatoes and peppers. Now add the owner Harold into the mix who is always around with a great personality and you have just a wonderful, fun and filling dining experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! See Ya in six months.

Around 10 years ago I once flew into Newark from the UK and my connecting flight (last one of the day) got cancelled. United (or rather Continental at the time) put me up in a hotel and gave me a $50 food voucher for my trouble. They put me up at the hotel next door to Harold's which I'm pretty sure used to be a Holiday Inn. With $50 voucher in hand I decided to see what he dining options were, the only thing was Harold's next door. That was my first experience and I was fascinated by the sandwiches - or rather the excess of the sandwiches. I remember being amazed that the menu recommended some sandwiches served 8-9 people. A sandwich that can feed 8-9 people!? God Bless America! The only thing I remembered about the place was it had the "world's largest pickle bar", so I Googled that and out popped the address for Harold's. We picked up the car and headed over to NJ for my trip down memory lane. The place hasn't changed a bit in all this time, the hotel next door is now some no name brand that I didn't recognise. The restaurant has a real low key down to earth feel which I remembered I enjoyed. The sandwiches haven't changed either, they are still enormous and overloaded with pastrami or corned beef goodness. We decided on the modest pastrami and corned beef mixed sandwich which serves 2-3 people. It was excellent especially with the Russian dressing. The pickle bar was still there but I remember it being bigger. You can pick up additional bread to make smaller more manageable sandwiches. Service was very quick and efficient. The portions here are huge so come with an appetite. This place is nothing fancy but the food is something else. It's a little off the beaten path but highly recommended.

Been coming here for years. Brisket, roast beef, pastrami, jumbo dog, lox platter, fries, rings, potato knish. It's all excellent. Never had a bad meal. Consistantly good service. If you're somehow turned off by huge portions, please look elsewhere. Someday, I will come for dinner and have the beef ribs. I've spent a significant portion of my life thinking about them!

First time but not the last to stop at Harold's New York Deli on our travels. Our pastrami sandwich was everything our friends and internet friends talked about. Delicious and enormous. The pickle bar was good too. Highly recommend to deli lovers!

Went here with high expectations and i am glad to say i was not disappointed. The food was delicious very well prepared and served very quickly. My posse of 4 and I Arrived 4:30 pm. Saturday afternoon immediately was seated. The portions are beyond what any picture can explain Sandwich that vertically is record breaking at least 1 1/2 footer ( think Dagwood) Pancake the size of a Pizza Pie Soup bowls tat need ladles Cake that is made for a giant Cheese fries that had way too too much Fries & Cheese HAVE to make this place a go to spot for groups one unnerving thing to note The service was outstanding really attentive. I did notice this weird smile & look the waiter had whenever he put down a steroid size serving reminded me of the Guy Fawkes mask pastrami / cornbeef XLG sanwhich heaven

Great old school deli food. Portions are huge and expect to share your plate... The pastrami and bagel was amazing and the pickle bar was fun... Offered a wide variety of home made picked... Fun experience... :)

  • Jeannie E.

Just amazing! The health salad at the pickle bar puts an amazing and fresh start to the mouth watering, deliciousness served in the entrées! Pastrami professionals!

  • Kamila R.

Very interesting place and a totally different deli experience for me! The sandwiches are HUGE but all it is, is pounds of sliced up meat you get to make your own sandwich on rye bread which was very delicious! I'm a BIG pickle fan& the half sour pickles were great! I definitely felt like I was a small person in a giants restaurant. Everything was just BIG! Totally recommend going in a group and splitting whatever you get. The dessert looked unbelievable! Here you probably have to come at a different time if you want to eat the dessert because it's just too much. Best time to come is between lunch and dinner high peak times. We came at 2PM and waited about 15 minutes. Service was okay.

  • Tim D.

Amazing food. Pickle bar is excellent. This is a place you come hungry and leave the diets at home. Act like a glutton and enjoy yourself. But remember to leave room for cake. Must have cake!!! This is a place you come with a group. Couples would just be wasting food unless you like leftovers the next day. So ask your annoying coworker if she and her boyfriend would like to join you guys for dinner. You come here to eat. Eat and eat some more then go home and go to sleep. Worry about the gym tomorrow.

  • Tony M.

If you love be huge sandwiches this is the place! We always have the BLT. One order can feed 5 people at least! Pickle bar is awesome. Service always polite and attentive. I love this place but can't come here too often for fear of gaining a hundred pounds from their giant portions!

  • Matt S.

Harold's succeeds at making quality Jewish-deli-style sandwiches served in aggressively large sizes that are sure to liberate the inner-glutton within even the most unassuming of guests. Going here is a real trip.

  • Giuseppe M.

My softball was playing a game near Harold's and I was told it was to die for. They told me the sandwichs were works or art and the pickle bar would blow me away. Sadly I never saw it because I showed up at 8:55pm and was rudely told that it was take out only by the cashier and after I asked her why does your sign say open til 9:30pm she replied we close when we want. So I left and won't ever come back.

  • Cassandra G.

I love this place. The prices are outrageous but when you see the amount of food they are going to over-stuff you with, you'll understand why. The Italian hot dog from here lasted me and my husband about 3 - 4 days. So, although they're pricey, their meals will last you a while in left overs! One serving of cake from here is about 6 pieces! So go hungry and prepared to be sick-to-your-stomach full. Definitely attend this restaurant in a group and order something everyone likes and split the bill. It's the best way to go here.

    (5)
  • Lauren V.

Oh I love this place, I've been here a few times and have little to no complaints. The menu has a lot of variety and the portions are huge but the price tag is to match. The deli meat is spot on. The potato pancake was amazing. It was as big as the plate and extremely thick. It was served with homemade applesauce. So that is a must have for me. The pickle bar is toted as being huge, but I wasn't really impressed. But, if that's my only complaint, then it's not a big deal. Service wasn't amazing, but every time I go there it's busy so that's probably why. Overall I will definitely go back again and again. I am constantly pleased. Must come with a big appetite though.

    (4)
  • Bob R.

There are places that serve big portions, and places that serve completely ridiculous portions. Harold's falls into the latter. No place needs to make everything on the menu so huge. And you pay a major premium or those portions. $50 for a corned beef? $63 for an open-face turkey sandwich? $11 for one potato pancake? Lunch for 4 can run a fortune here. As far as the place itself, the staff is nice and the service is very good. The food itself, however, is squarely average. Not NYC quality. Just good basic deli. Seems like people get blindsided by the size of the portions rather than how good the food really is. But that's just me.

    (3)
  • Errica T.

Get a pastrami sandwich and call it a day. The food is more novelty than it is known for taste. Don't order too much or you will leave feeling gross and bloated.

    (4)
  • Nick F.

Had the smaller Corned Beef sandwich the size of your head. Couldn't finish it. I felt stupid paying $25 for a sandwich, but it is like 5 sandwiches worth the meat. Pickle bar was good. I stay nearby while on business in NJ, and I will return here.

    (5)
  • Greg L.

Sandwiches as large as the table....I'm a fan. The Jewish deli meats are great as are the potato pancakes. Be sure to order each item with a group of friends since everything here is huge.

    (5)
  • M T.

Excessively large portions. The focus is on quantity and not quality. Terrible interior, blah food. The only thing going for this place is HUGE portions of meat - which does not cut it for me.

    (1)
  • Grace A.

Ugh. So much food. Come hungry and with friends or family with the same food preferences. I'm a picky eater and if I drew a Venn diagram of what my coworker wants to eat and I what I want to eat at Harold's there would be no intersection. Nothing against Harold's food, it just means we each get our own entree and thus a ton of food. Great pastrami sandwiches. The pickle bar (why I go there when I know I'm getting a ton of meat is beyond me) is always good so I can remember which pickles I do like (I think the half sour, but I will take one of each again just in case)... And don't forget to order your meter of cake. This is again where having complementary tastes pays off. My coworkers love carrot cake. I hate carrot cake and love chocolate cake so we usually get a slice of each. If you are lucky enough to leave nearby you will get a ton of food for the rest of the week. If you are visiting you end up gorging or throwing a lot away. I usually do both.

    (4)
  • Leah J.

This place is amazing. My favorite deli in NJ. The portions are huge, so you'll need to go with a group! The corn beef is phenomenal and the pickle bar has so many different options. The wait on the weekends is crazy so to avoid it you'll have to show up early for lunch/dinner. I'd definitely recommend this place to friends and family who are looking for a casual but interesting experience.

Stopped by here on the suggestion of a friend who lived near Harold's. As a self titled sandwich snob, I am glad I listened to my friend. Easy to find, plenty of parking, big and spacious dining area...this place was starting off great. Waitstaff was attentive and friendly and then there was the food. Now, at first glance the prices may be a bit off putting, but believe me when I tell you, worth every penny. I had a large pastrami with a side of potato salad, and of course I helped myself to the restaurant's "pickle bar". My buddy had a bacon cheeseburger and onion rings. Any attempt I make at describing the food would fall short of reality. HUGE portions is not an understatement. Plan on taking leftovers with you, which the waitstaff is more than willing to accommodate. If you find yourself near exit 10 on the New Jersey Turnpike...go to Harold's, thank me later.

Oh my gosh woke up at 4AM and got on a plane for 4hours and when we got to the newark airport we were starving so we needed some large portions and we got them at Harold's deli the food was amazing my cousin had the eggs and pancakes and he ate all the eggs and half the pancake And on our third night in new york we needed some desert and we got it at Harold's deli so over all amazing place

Good for big groups, portions are huge but you pay huge price. Love the pickle bar. Always crowded. But good experience food is good, Rubens r good..everything else just above average. Family friendly a lil whole in the wall kinda easy to miss but spacious inside.

Swung by this place on our way back to NYC. And were we in for a BIG treat! I mean the portions were out-of-control ginormous The whole time I couldn't stop staring at all of the plates passing by as happy hungry people eagerly awaited sandwiches, soups, and cakes that could feed a small village. So we ordered a pastrami sandwich and matzo ball soup. A pickle bar is included in the meal, I really enjoyed the half sour pickles and could have filled up on those alone. When our food came, the matzo ball was seriously the size of my head. The sandwich was equally sizable to the matzo soup and the two pieces of bread sitting at each end of the meat stack looked so sad and flimsy, good thing the pickle bar had extra bread! The food was tasty, but ranks as average compared to other east coast delis in my book. However, the decent food coupled with the fun experience is definitely unique.

Delicious roast beef and corned beef. A bit pricey but keep in mind half the sandwich made 4. Pickle bar was delicious

  • Steve B.

A great place to bring friends. Portions are huge and meant for sharing which is accomplished via the pickle and bread bar. Best Corned beef and Pastrami ever and the knish is the size of a volley ball. The best part is watching the new people see the portion size as it hits the table. And for dessert, a slice of cake will feed around 10 people. All around a great time was had by all.

  • Jonathan S.

Read the reviews before you go here. It's an experience. No individual portions are sold here - everything is absolutely gigantic, the smallest things serve two people.

Only go to Harold's if you're REALLY hungry... I mean stranded on an island without food for a week, hungry. This place has some of the best meats and sandwiches around. The portion sizes are unreal! Buy a loaf of bread and you can bring leftovers in for lunch for a week. The prices are very reasonable for what you get back. Stop in if you're close to the Raritan Center in Edison, NJ. You won't leave hungry... EVER! Big Shenster APPROVED!!!

  • Wayne B.

To step into Harold's, is to walk into a dining environment of unearthly impact. It is a sit down or take out deli/ restaurant with fairly predictable menu selections... EXCEPT, the portions are far beyond what is considered normal. A typical single sandwich is $26.00, a Large $51.00.!! I beg you to read the menu, peruse the breakfast and imagine mountains of bacon, sausage & toast accompanying your eggs. The operative word here is More, you get More. There's nothing drizzled with truffle oil or lovingly presented... There's just more. I was working nearby and we sent out someone to pick up lunch for 4 people... Two sandwiches was too much for the 4 of us. When you pick up your sandwich at Harold's, they will ask you how much bread you like with it. So, in actuality, It's a cartoon and the joke's on nobody. A landmark vision of Harold's is walking into their restaurant and viewing the refrigerator of layer cakes... 24" tall, no lie. Harold's is a level of perceived gluttony that is so far over the top, it's hard to imagine it being a viable business. But the place is hopping and there's often a wait for a table. It's just another slice of weirdness in New Jersey... Be sure to bring a Doggy Bag

My daughter and I stopped by Harold's. Overall super clean place great service by anwar but overpriced for what you get. We ordered a two meat sandwich plate for the two of us and it was more than 30 dollars. The food was eh, just ok; truly nothing special.

It was a wonderful experience and this place have the best pastrami I've ever had. Very tender, juicy and full of flavor! The mustard and cole slaw that came with the pastrami was to die for! They also have a huge selection of pickles that you can munch on but I didn't particularly enjoy them. I also had their French toast and omelet. Both were pretty good.

  • Mr. F.

Mr. F has been told that bigger is not always better. Well when Mr. F & the fellas crave meat, we want it big, juicy, & lots of it, & Harold's always produces. Throw in all the health salad, pickles, & hot peppers you can eat and you have something special. Going to Harold's is like going to your family's house. They are not shy with the portions, but you do pay for it as this place is a little pricy. The fellas & Mr. F shared a piping hot HUGE pastrami sandwich on rye with a side of French fries & gravy. Mr. C & Mr. F also split a GIGANTIC milkshake lovers lane style with one straw. While Mr. F wouldn't call Harold's romantic, romance is always in the air anytime 2 guys share a creamy milkshake. Mr. F & the fellas stuffed all the meat & pickles we could in our mouths until we couldn't take any more. It was so delicious. The pastrami was melt in your mouth tender. The French fries were terrific, but the gravy was disgusting. The look & smell of the gravy reminded Mr. F of something he would find on the set of a German adult orientated movie. This place is also great for breakfast. They serve pancakes so big they would make Uncle Buck proud (RIP John Candy, your obese antics are truly missed...) So go, bring your appetite & enjoy stuffing yourself full of meat. Mr. F & the fellas will be back next time our paths or streams cross.

Given the reviews, obviously this place just wasn't for me. It's as though the worst stereotypes from Staten Island and Jersey are assembled here at any given time. But anywho, I wouldn't mind the patrons so much if the food was worth it. It wasn't. For complimentary pickles, the pickle bar selection was solid. Not the best I've had, but just okay. Now, as for the titanic, over-the-top, supposed-to-wow sandwiches...we ordered a pastrami sandwich to split between two people. I don't know what it was, but the quality was just a notch above mediocre. I wasn't blown away. They made for great leftovers, but not worth the $23 ballpark. Plus, our waitress, Ramona, had a miserable attitude. I intuited that the waitstaff is probably pulled in a million different directions. I tried giving her the benefit of the doubt that she was under stress. ...But I'm talking eye-rolls, an irate response, and an overall hostile vibe to every request we had, no matter how simple the task or nicely we'd inquire. Like we asked for to go boxes, I think, which provoked the finale eye-roll, OH NO not boxes, these customers make my job so complicated. lol at least roll those eyes after we tip. 1 star for Rude Ramona and too much hype.

This is a unique restaurant. The portions are so huge that they are to be shared among 3 people or more. Otherwise you are going to take a lot of the food home with you. So you should only go here if the whole group of you wants the same dish. The food is good. That's why you put up with the portion size. The prices are extremely high, but not when you consider how much food you're getting. Order for 3, and the prices aren't that bad. Do you like potato knishes? Do you remember the knish places in Coney Island and Brighton Beach Brooklyn when those neighborhoods were Jewish rather than Russian and there were some great knish places around? The potato knishes here aren't as good as Shatzkins or Mrs Stahl's or the other knish places that used to be in Brooklyn. Not as good. Better. They are better, dammit. You never had a knish as good as you can get if you walk into Harold's. You will devour it, and it's huge. I once got sick from the stuffed derma at Harold's. That happened when I took most of it home because it was so damn huge, and I ate the leftovers the same day. It is way too rich for that. You'll kill your stomach that way. It tastes great though. Don't do it. Have a little, and don't go back and have seconds. The pain was really bad. I like the sour pickles and the free health salad at the bar. The food is uniformly excellent. It's just that you all have to agree on what to order or it makes no sense to come here.

Love this place- Anyone I bring here really gets a kick out of the size of the food- and it tastes awesome!

Let me tell you the service is lousy !! Ordered take out and asked for extra pickles and bread meanwhile they were looking to charge an extra 45cents each ... Pickles are free of charge at this restaurant and tbh their cleanliness and food quality has gone downhill in the past years . Will not be going back to the restaurant ever again thanks to the nasty staff and owner .

Restaurants, diners, and fast food establishments should be thankful there is only one store and in a somewhat remote part of New Jersey. Every plate and entrée is beyond huge! Each serves at 3 people. They layout the food red carpet for you. Delicious and tasty. Friendly and courteous staff. 4 people can eat one of their pizza size pancakes. The omelets are huge beyond belief! I had lunch here before( turkey sandwich), it came with the works; salads, pickles, condiments and a loaf of rye bread! The menu says feeds 2-3 people, an understatement! I've never seen anyone finish the meals. A doggy shopping bag will be brought home! The owner is warm and friendly and enjoys engaging the parents. Make this place number 1 on your bucket list. The Deli Is also attached to the Edison Hotel. So if you live a distance away, drive up or down and get a room and treat your family and friends to a dining experience!

My family absolutely LOVES this place! Every time we're in New Jersey, we head for this family-style restaurant. Their portions are HUGE! (And so are their prices) but well worth it.

Great sandwich but priced extremely high. You have to split the sandwich between 3 people to make it worth your while. Pickle bar is good and the healthy salad is very good.

The gold standard for any deli. Best pastrami best turkey best hot dog best potato pancake I've ever had you get enough leftovers for three people so it's also a great value.

I came here for a small birthday dinner celebration. Wanted to experience what all the hype was about and I must say, we weren't disappointed! I love all the photos that line the walls, really encompassing the feel of old new york. My parents and I loved real, classic jewish deli food, and Harold's is exactly that. The tongue sandwich was delicious, and of course enormous. But I was pleasantly surprised with the matzo ball soup. We all thought because of how gigantic the matzo would be, that it would be far too dense and sort of like a rock. However, it was super tasty, extremely light and fluffy. The broth was also just as good, and had tender chicken with veggies. The waiter didn't really explain anything to us, so we were confused as to how to navigate the menu, and as to how to order dishes. The pickle bar - perfect. But what I came for was the cake! We had a slice of the black and white - it's big enough to share lol. It wasn't fantastic, average plain cake. I personally don't like cake served straight out of the fridge because it's very dense and heavy. But it was the atmosphere and occassion that made this visit worth while. Definitely pay Harold's a visit for some authentic and well made food.

Great bang for your buck. Yes, the largest sandwich costs over sixty bucks but it will feed 8+ people. I ate there 12 hours ago and I still feel full. Don't overload on pickles and bread.

3.5 Stars. This was the last meal in NJ tonight. Holy cow this was a TON of food. We ordered a make your own triple decker sandwich with pastrami, brisket and turkey as well as a potato pancake, a knish and a regular pancake for my friends kid. The portions can seriously feed a small village...and no that is not an exaggeration....its the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God. This place was a trip. Sandwich- This thing was held together by 4 foot long bamboo skewers. It was the largest meat/bread combination I have ever seen in my life. The pastrami was tasty and I ate mostly that. I had some brisket and turkey too and they were pretty good also. They have a bread/pickle bar where you can stock up on as much stuff as you want which was nice. Potato Pancake- This thing wasn't that great. I only had a little piece of it and it was too dry and not that flavorful. It was about the size of a frisbee. I would not recommend it. Knish- This was the first time I ever tried a knish. I liked it a lot! Its like a pie crust surrounding mashed potatoes and onions. It was delicious. The size of this thing was about as big as 3 softballs. It was really really good! Pancake- Didn't try any of this one but it was the size of a car tire. No joke! They serve it on a pizza tray and gave us a pizza box for the leftovers. Overall this place was cool to check out. The sandwiches and knish were really good. Its a joke how much food they give you though. We took home 2 doggie bags that weighed about 10lbs. Total damage was $113.00. Really steep for dinner but for the amount of food they give you, it was worth it. This place would be great to come to with about 8 people. You can split one sandwich and still leave with leftovers and it would make it only about $15 a person that way.

OMG you will never see meat stacked this high on a sandwich which feeds families of 6. The first time I ever went to Harolds I was with 2 buddies from work and we ordered a larger portion feeling we were pretty hungry, big mistake we took 6 sandwiches home or at least felt like it . They bring you out a mound of whatever meat or meats that you request also another mound of cheese and the sodas are absolutely huge two or three people can drink one without reach the bottom. The pickle bar is stupendous ranging from hot, butter, sour, half sour chips hot & sweet peppers, coleslaw and it's all you can eat so good lord bring your feedbag. I highly recommend to be careful and put sharp objects safely secured because when the meat comes out you're talking about a feeding frenzy with hands, spit, forks flying over the table pumpernickel and rye bread available to go balistic. Slendid fresh deli meats with an unbelievable pickle bar delivers 2 big thumbs up for this near head. Depending on the time you get there if its in the heart of rush hour lunch you may have to stand in line for a few minutes but trust me it is worth it!

YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM. That is how I feel about this place. The food is absolutely amazing, a bit pricey, but hey, I'd pay $25 for the mounds of food they supply you. I mean, the portion sizes are just GINORMOUS. They deliberately give you more than enough food so you'll have lunch and dinner from there for DAYS. I must start from the beginning here, out of respect for the portion sizes. First off, start with the Pickle Bar. Their pickles are great, and their sides are too. Must get their muffins as well! (They start bringing those out after 4 pm, so for you people that come here for lunch you are missing out!). Take all the pickles you want, but that's only the beginning. Second, I recommend that you get their Matzo Ball soup. While the soup is great itself, the Matzo Balls are about the size of softballs. You will need to break it up into several pieces so people can get, you will not be disappointed. For your main courses, that's where you enjoy. Stack your sandwich with all the meat you order (I suggest the turkey, the roast beef, the pastrami, and the corned beef). You will be so satisfied after one sandwich that you can just have the meat on its own! Get a side of Kasha Varnishkas or French Fries (they have some other ones I can't think of now), and there you have it! A lovely meal (and more for later), for a price that you might say RIPOFF, but in the long-run, you'll save. ***Saved some room for dessert? Good. You'll need it. They have some really generous sized cakes, and cookies, and treats galore that you'll need all the appetite to make through with it. If you made it that far, on your first time, you are a trooper.*** I highly recommend coming here for lunch and dinner, but you can also get breakfast here, where they have enormously sized pancakes and Matzo Brei that will make you salivate. Also definitely read the inserts of the napkins, I always do. It just explains some Yiddish words, what they mean, and how to use them. Even if I know what the words mean, it's always fun to read it. Ain't no Deli in the area like Harold's.

First I have to say that I've been a fan of Harold's and coming here for a number of years. So why only 3 stars you may ask? Well here is why, the pastrami. We ordered a large pastrami, and the pastrami & corned beef reuben for the table, also placed a take out order for friends of pastrami, corned beef and the brisket. All the pastrami tasted exactly like the corned beef, even the texture was the same. Normally they look and taste very different. But we couldn't tell much of a difference, they even removed most of the spices from the pastrami. The service was excellent as always, friendly staff and very fast at filling drinks up. The corned beef was great and the brisket was fantastic. I always enjoy the pickle bar, just wish that if you're placing a take out order you could get a container of the health salad that is there. My nephew had a dessert and it looked delicious but I don't go there for the sweets, I hit the place for the meat. When I go back to NJ to see family again I'll go back but this next time it will be brisket.

Not kidding about the portions here... I mean Jesus! Food is average, but let's face it people that come here don't come for a quality meal, they are looking for bang for their buck or stove big @ss portions and that's exactly what this place delivers. The pancakes age the size of a damn pizza, and you get several per order! Just crazy.

    (3)
  • Kevin S.

Yes, the sandwiches are great and huge, but I think I might actual prefer breakfast. Everything is equally huge and delicious. I've had both the corn beef and pastrami hash and I can't recommend them enough. A massive pile of meat, peppers, onions, and potatoes gifted to humanity from the gods. Pancakes are the size of pizzas and the omelets are always cooked perfectly. Harold's is a cant miss

I have been a huge fan of this palce for a long time. They have a great menu with very genrous portions. You better have your appetite ready because you are going to need it. The meats are fresh and the pickle bar is awesome. All the food on the menu is business! You cannot really go wrong with any selection, this place has got you covered from sandwiches to steaks. The only downside is that this place is not very exciting, in fact it's downright dull. The restaurant has a severely outdated look and feeling, and it doesn't help that it is attached to a very creepy hotel at the end of route 17 South. However the food is great, fresh and of course delicious. While it is not intimate, romantic, trendy or lively , its a nice casual place to go for lunch or dinner with family or friends, or better yet just take the food home.

This place was FILTHY. Menus covered in food remnants, silverware and plates were caked with the last diners meal and you will be nickel and dimed for any special requests. The corned beef and pastrami were below average. Turkey and half sours were good but I couldn't get over how dirty it was.

  • David P.

Yes, portions are over-the-top, feed-a-family-of-four-for-a-week humongous, but that's all part of the kitschy fun. Pastrami is well prepared and thinly sliced. Bread freshly sliced, pickles from the pickle and bread bar great. If you can't get into the city and have time to kill on your way to Newark Airport, this a must stop.

Holy Frijoles!! I feel like Harold's Mew York Style Deli is straight out of one of Homer Simpson's dream. Almost every food item in this place is MASSIVE! And their taste is equally as impressive. Talk about Shock and awe... every server going by had more food in hand than the last. A terrific sight to behold!!! Harold's claims to offer the "best corned beef" "best pastrami". I had both and can definitely say that they're both very good!! A great place for groups of 4-8 people. One entree will easily feed 3 people.... Expect to take next weeks lunch home if you get a club sandwich (mmmm..... Club Sandwich)

  • Roopa S.

The portion sizes here astound me. I ordered the single blueberry pancake, and it was four times the size of my head. The pancake was tasty, but a little too thick for my liking. The omelet we ordered was standard and fluffy, but the potatoes were a real hit. This restaurant unfortunately saddened me-- the portion sizes were monster, and to me it was just a picture of unintelligent eating. I didn't even get to try the pickle bar because I was too stuffed from the pancake, eggs, and potatoes. Dining here was definitely an experience I will always remember, but I wouldn't necessarily return.

I love coming here. Havent been here in awhile but its best to go with a group. The food is awesome. The sandwiches are humongous. It is a family style restaurant. So prices can be scary but u share whatever you order with 4-5 people. The matzah ball soup is delicious. The corned beef and pastrami are outstanding moist and no fat. They have a pickle bar which has a lot of different pickled things. Fresh rye bread. Service is awesome. Ot does get quite busy so try to get there early, If there's a game going on. My son orders the fried chicken which is 32 pieces of crispy juicy yumminess. Definitely worth a try but remember bring a large group and sharing is encouraged. You also have to save room for their 7 layer cakes. Darn now im hungry...

LOVE THIS PLACE! Originally from NYC, A trip to Harold's is GRAND! Start at Pickle Bar and just about any pickle or pickled tomato/pepper/salad you can think of but don't dare think of filling up here! Everything here is HUMUNGOUS portions! You think I'm kidding?! Go see for yourself! My faves: Matzoh ball soup, corned beef pastrami sandwiches piled way high, 6 foot (yes 6 feet wayyy taller than me) Romanian Skirt Steak smothered in onions and mushrooms, black and white cookies, eclairs, cake slices. My whole family comes and easily fed with doggie bags to tote home. SO MUCH FOOD!

OMG! The Carrot Cake is bigger than my head! I loved it! Pastrami Sandwich was excellent! The table next to us was from out of town so they over ordered just to try as much as they could. I've never seen so much food on a table! WOW! Melissa and I split the sandwich. Do not judge this place by the building you would be making a big mistake!

Start with succulent pastrami and perfect warm rye bread, then after sticker shock realize that you got Reubens for 5. We found Harolds on yelp after nixing the inferior foodstops at the nj turnpike stops. What a jackpot. My wiife came back to the car with a 3 bag feast of fabulous food. We will come again

Three stars because their service during dinner time is not good. Twice I've had pushy waitresses who seemed to want me and my boyfriend to hurry order to get another group in. The breakfast service, HOWEVER, is fantastic and they treat you very warmly. I don't expect to be waited on hand and foot, but let me enjoy my meal and a time out. The food is great and the Macaroni and Cheese is the best I've ever had. Go for the breakfast if you can. It is well worth it.

The portions here are huge, like everything says it serves from 3-5 people. Pickle Bar, Pastrami sandwich the size of my head that fed my girlfriend and I and even the coleslaw was amazing and I f$%&ing hate coleslaw. FOOD GOOD. It's pricey, and I would put it at three dollar signs but the portion breakdown and the amount of leftovers are incredible. I really want one of those GIANT cakes in the front of the restaurant. Also, as a Jew, I loved the amount of Kosher-friendly and specifically culturally-Jewish options. I know, I know... it's a New York Deli but seriously, they take it to a new level. Best Sandwich shop in New Jersey A+

I've been coming to this deli for years now Esp for special occasions. The style here is BIG!!!! I mean everything is from Land of the Giants!!! (I'm dating myself here! ). You either need to come with many people or have a huge appetite. I prefer breakfast over lunch. I feel that quality wise I can get better corned beef or pastrami at Katz' in the city. However the potato kinish stuffed with onion is amazing. The matzo ball ( and I mean one ball) is the size of Kentucky. It can be split many ways. There's a great salad bar with pickles, cole slaw , health salad, rye bread etc. For breakfast it's one of the only sit down places left to get a fish platter ranging from lox, sable, white fish, carp. Great lox, eggs and onions. Also my second favorite cheese blintzers after Juniors. Any left overs are happily taken home with their provided tin foil, styrofoam boxes and plastic bags. Sharing is encouraged here. Please see my pic of their normal regular pastrami sandwich. This can be broken down into at least 4 huge sandwiches with the rye bread at the salad bar.

I finally got to eat at the legendary Harolds! A Jewish style deli in NJ and they don't mess around with portions here. Unless you have a group of 4 or more, prepare to leave with left overs. We came as a group of 5 and we still couldn't finish. We decided on splitting the monstrous mountain of meat that is the pastrami sandwich. Bread, cheese, and more meat than most people are accustomed to. Its served plain but you have access to their pickle bar which is what it sounds like. Of particular note were the pickled peppers which were spicy and very flavorful. Just be careful that you aren't biting into a seed cluster or you may get a nasty surprise. I wish I could come here more often.

The Why, the How, it doesn't really matter. It's the Thank You that counts. So, thank you Harold, for the pastrami, for the pickle bar, for the onion rings, from the asteroid-sized matzo ball to the overall vibe of your siren song, thank you for everything. Really. Thank you for pulling me off the highway for the past 15 years to smile and giggle and eat.

THEY HAVE A FREE PICKLE BUFFET. *drops mic* Seriously, service was great, sandwich was spot on (pastrami of course, big enough for the bf AND me), mountains of thick cut steak fries, giant Diet Cokes, and one of the best cheesecakes I've ever had. Definitely was not a healthy meal, and was a little expensive ($75 for all that), but it was a great experience. I would definitely go back with parents or something for a meal.

This place is amazing! Went in for a big New York style deli sandwich and boy did I get one! I had a "half" sandwich of corned beef and pastrami. It was PHENOMENAL! If ever near, you must stop and eat. I hope you have friends with you though, as servings are HUGE.

Harold's - for those who have been here, the name will (or at least should) strike fear into the hearts and stomachs of all, but in the best of ways. Eating here isn't simply a meal, it's an event; a feat of gastronomic strength. First off, don't - I repeat - DO NOT come here alone. If you do, you're going to end up going home with a few extra pounds of food in a doggie bag, and a substantially emptier wallet. The food at Harold's is all served one size: ginormous. Because of this, meals are meant to be shared, and there's very few (if any?) items on the menu that are really designed for one person. Because of this, prices are quite high, so for a first-timer it can be a little daunting. The menu is thankfully polite enough to explain this to you, with "triple decker" sandwiches packing enough meat to feed an entire table, and rightfully so - priced at a hefty ~$76 each. Service is speedy, and the "pickle bar" has plenty of bread and pickles available, intended for you to use to make a sandwich FROM the sandwich delivered to your table. The meat quality is amazing, the turkey is super moist, and even the slaw is perfectly seasoned. My only gripe is the prices. I know I said it's understandable, since the sizes are "sharable" / huge, but in the end, we're still talking about basically paying $80 for a couple pounds of deli meat. Very good deli meat, mind you, but deli meat all the same. Couple this with the fact that you can't really buy any "normal" sized appetizers or meals, and it's very easy to get pigeonholed into a rather large check, when all is said and done. Still, would I go back? You bet your ass I would. The food is great, as is the excitement when you see a 2.5 foot tall sandwich arrive at your table. Sure, it's an expensive sandwich, but I'm pretty sure you'll agree - the quality and the "fun" of Harold's can't be beat.

The amount of food here is gluttonous. I know that's the point, over the top, huge portions but its just not for me.

  • Mike C.

Man....where do I start. Ok,...this is a joint you should not be at more than once a month. With that said, when your ready to treat yourself...step on it and get ya ass there. Pastrami is fantastic...it's my go to sandwich. I tried a turkey and cheese once...it was weird though. Imagine a pound of Swiss placed on top of a pound of turkey. Stick to the unique sandwiches you just can't get anywhere. Just go. Easy parking. Kind of weird to find if you never been before, it's part of a hotel next to it.

If I was going to the electric chair, I would order one of their corned beef sandwiches with coleslaw and sour pickles. This way, it would take another day for me to live! The food is awesome and the staff is fun, and the looks on the faces of the customers is amusing. Worth a trip from anywhere to eat here. Guaranteed, you will leave full!

This place is nothing to rave about and gives New York Deli a bad name. Overloading someone's plate with low quality food makes a mess not a meal. On top of it all the attitude of the owner is representative of the food.

This place is ridiculous. Went for lunch with a few guys from work, we ordered the pastrami and corned beef sandwiches respectively. Best pastrami I have ever had. The portions are enormous so bring your appetite. They also have a help yourself pickle bar which is great. I am a pickle liver.

I love Harold's but something was wrong Saturday night February 22nd 2014. The pastrami was cut thick, it was bland as well. The service was incredibly slow. It was an off night for sure. I am used to delicious pastrami, fast service and in general a great experience. It will be awhile before I go back but when I do I hope to give Harold's the 5 stars I am used to.

Great food with extra, extra large maybe even 3XL portions. You definitely don't leave hungry. You'll have left overs for 2 days. Prices are acceptable considering the size. Do you want pancakes? Only order 1. They have take out which makes life easier.

We stopped here at about the halfway point of our 5 hour road trip. After eating, I walked to hostess stand and asked where the restrooms were. The man behind the hostess stand looked up, responded "where it says restroom" and looked back down. I was a bit shocked and without saying a word, I started to walk towards the sign that said restroom. I did see the sign before I asked but I was looking for clarification because there are two restroom signs (one on a door, and one above the door with an arrow pointing right- and I honestly wasn't sure if this meant go through the door or to the right). As I was walking, I turned back, hoping the not so nice man at the hostess stand was watching, would realize I was still not sure where to go and offer assistance. As I glanced back he looked up and says "you're welcome". Again, taken back by how rude this man was, I responded "that was very rude", the man without breaking eye contact ignored my statement and repeated himself saying, "you're welcome". As I was in the restroom, appalled by this interaction, I was discussing the recent encounter with a friend when a woman who overheard me says "I hate to break it to you but that was the owner, Harold". I was shocked. On top of this, as a friend of mine was paying for to-go items at the register close to the entrance (which is also close to the bathrooms), a customer asked the cashier where the restrooms were. The cashier, not friendly but not as openly rude as Harold, pointed the costumer in the right direction. My friend asked the cashier how many times a day she got asked this question and the cashiers response was "about a 100". This at least made me feel better knowing I clearly wasn't the only person who couldn't simply follow the restroom signs- you would think if Harold is so obviously disturbed by the hundreds of customers asking this same question everyday, he would take it upon himself to fix the signs! Or at the very least, manage to formulate a polite response. I can honestly say I did not have high expectations for this experience, I thought it was going to be another establishment with the only 'wow' factor being its giant portions but the food proved me wrong. I was impressed because the food was delicious. The bread soft. The corn beef and pastrami lean and full of flavor. The pickle bar a great touch and the coleslaw light and fresh. And for the record, the waitstaff was very good. If I didn't have a two hour drive ahead of me, I would have walked out, not asked for the restroom and this place would have been a solid four stars. But an owner that doesn't value his customers, is one whom doesn't value his establishment- and who wants to dine at a place like that?

Have always heard about this place and finally went with my wife. Very fast seating and friendly service, incredible pickle bar, delicious meats that was more than enough for the two of us. Our "large" turkey / hard salami sandwich which feeds 1-2 people made 6 very large sized sandwiches. I will come back here again.

5 stars for being an excellent diner! I love diners, you can get everything! This one you get everything super-sized which makes it fun. The pancake is literally the size of a pizza! But honestly what I like best about this place is that they actually cook things right! How many diners have you been to a diner, order poached eggs and get them sunny side up? Poorly poached? Fried even? I ordered eggs Benedict and got perfectly poached eggs. I don't know if the person reading this review has wag bed much of kitchen nightmares, but Gordon Ramsey commonly tests chefs with their ability to poach an egg. Not that the chefs here are moving onto Daniels anytime soon, just that what they know they know well!

Absolutely amazing authentic Jewish deli cuisine. The roast beef and pastrami are insane. I also had the mozzarella sticks for the first time and whoa! Amazing! There's also a great pickle bar with my favorite kind, half sour! Yum. This is a must eat if ur in the neighborhood and even if u aren't like me who lives in Staten Island, u have to take the ride. It's so worth it.

Used to be a big fan till we were embarrassed by the manager and then told not to come back by the owner when we called him the next day to say what happened. Our bill was over $150, the manager came over and told us that we couldn't wrap up the leftover pickles on our table and that we had to buy them. We asked if they were going to go in the trash? She went on to berate us on how we were stealing. Who knows, they may just reuse them. Customer service is not good, and frankly, they are very very expensive.

This place is fantastic! If you go you better bring a BIG appetite because the portions are huge! You will bring a doggy bag home that 's for sure! The food is delicious, the pickles plentiful and the deserts are great!

We went there because it's right next to our hotel. Portion size is huge, and this place was featured on man vs food, but besides that, I thought the food was pretty average. The pickle bar was also average too (and not that big for something advertised as the biggest pickle bar in the world). If you take the novelty factor out, it's just another average deli. Try it for fun, but don't expect your mind to be blown.

I came here twice. The first time was very good and it was not packed. The sandwich was great and huge. Second time I came it was packed. The sandwich was ok this time. It was not the same. They made it smaller. I love the pickle bar.

Sooo many options how do you choose?!? Of course you start with the gigantic matzo ball soup and then the even more gigantic pastrami sandwich!!! Workers are very friendly and the proportions of EVERYTHING is ten times larger than normal. Can't wait to go back and try the milkshake, cheesesteak, ribs, potato latka.. Shall I go on?? The Health salad in the complimentary pickle bar is also on point!!! Almost filled up on that alone. Did I mention complimentary pickles? You can also BYoB and one piece of advice: make sure to go with a large group so that you can share and order more than one thing.. Especially when it's going to be difficult to decide which deliciously gigantic sized meal you will order!

Matzo ball soup feeds four, not the 2-3 quoted. The extra broth and volleyball I ordered went home with us. Have to say the waiter warned us, but I'm a fresser. The soup itself is very good, not too salty, with some nice white meat chicken. The flavorful, lean yer moist corned beef is better than the pastrami which is better than the brisket. The pastrami is nicely peppered, but not at the level of Katz's hand cut. Thin sliced brisket is tender, but needs the fat-free jus, which is far superior to the library paste some places give you with their brisket. Perhaps I've been spoiled for Yiddishe brisket by Texas barbeque brisket. Maybe I'll try the turkey next time. One corned beef and one pastrami would feed four nicely, with leftovers. Some might be offended by the signs on the pickle bar imposing charges for taking bread and pickles home but my guess is they are there to keep people from using the place as a supermarket substitute. I always make extra take home sandwiches from our meat and the pickle bar bread, although after reading Steve C.'s tale I left the extra pickles behind this time. The combination of fried sides was a little disappointing - the onion rings were crisp and greaseless, the steak fries oily but pretty good, the crinkle cut fries overdone and tasteless. Service was excellent, and you get big tumblers of water. I've never had room for their frighteningly large desserts. If the other meats were as good as the corned beef I would give Harold's 5 stars - as it is I would call this a 4.3. I think it is one of the best deli experiences around.

Stayed at a hotel near this place, my company took me there for lunch. O-M-G, this is definitely a no joke place if you're a foodie! We got a corned beef sandwich and meatball Parmesan to split between 4 people. We could have easily fed 8 with the amount of food we had. They also got some type of potato and onion side dish and for dessert a chocolate eclair which was bigger than a 1 year old baby! The portion gimmick is really cool, but obviously not somewhere you want to go often. The food is actually rather tasty so I don't think it's quantity over quality. I will definitely stop here when I'm visiting my corporate office or if I'm traveling close by. I took a picture of a pancake they brought out for another table. It was the size of an XL Pizza. As a pickle aficionado I was very impressed with the pickle bar as well. YUMMY!

I came here after seen it on the show Man VS Food and I really enjoyed my sandwich. I had the pastrami on ryed and it was so juicy and tasty I really want to go back and have another one. I got the L one and I shared with another person and we still had about half of it leftover.

This is a great NY style deli similar to the NYC great spots. The portions are beyond massive so you will want to share or take some home. The prices are reflective of the portions that are super size The quality of the pastrami sandwich that I had was first rate. The pickle bar is a great complement and there is extra bread that helped me to make 3 large sandwiches out of the single one that I ordered. I am pretty sure I will stop here every time I drive through Edison (exit 10, nj turnpike). This may become a real problem for me! Service was friendly and as I would expect for a sit down style deli. It is no surprise that man vs food did an episode and visit to this landmark. Highly recommended if you like the deli menu

They close early at 9:30 and my friends got there at 8:45. They were still willing to serve us, they just warned us they would be cleaning and vacuuming up as we were still dining. There were five of us and we got the two meat combo: hot pastrami and corn beef, which came with coleslaw and mustard. We also got sauteed onions. It was definitely more than enough for all of us! Portions are huge, even the water glasses are huge!

HOLY COW -- Lets just say all the food is ginormous. My husband and I share the half and half corn beef and pastrami sandwich and let me just say that this was good enough to feed the both of us. I could not even finish my half of the sandwich. We have been here a couple of times and have ordered some breakfast items. Had the original pancake - which by the way is the size of a large pizza. YES A LARGE PIZZA. Who can eat that much pancake, we ordered other things as well - scrambled eggs with lox and we had lots of left overs. My husband has ordered a cake from Harold's for my sister's birthday. He requested for a napoleon cake. It was definitely not a picnic getting it from NJ to Queens. I kid you not this cake was the size of a child's dream doll house. The best thing about this place is is that even though the size is huge the taste of the food is very delicious.

I try to find an excuse to go there. The best corn beef in NJ. I get the combo corn-beef and pastrami on rye and spend extra like the sandwich is cheap or something. All the food is double portion so it's double the price. Just going to see the cakes is worth it becasue they are triple portion. So so good! Miss their East Brunswick location.

My first experience was out of this world... I had been warned that the portions were huge, but did not believe it until I saw it. A friend and I shared a sandwich and then I think I brought home enough for 2 more times. I would go back again with 5 people .....

Ok, food aside, this review is specifically about the management. Tried planning a party here for a large group. Spoke with the owner several times months in advance, and he assured me it was no problem, just call a week in advance and make a regular reservation. When I called closer to the date, they took my reservation, but a few days before the event I called to make sure everything was set, and the manager and owner were both incredibly rude to me, to the point that they basically told me they didn't care about my business, and I had to scramble at the last minute to find a new venue. Terrible way to treat potential customers.

  • Doc B.

It's obvious that portion size is the big deal at Harold's. It's kind of silly, really, since no one should really want as much food as that. The cakes on display are about 2 feet tall. After all, if Greek diners have cakes a foot tall, then they need something more absurd, in order to stand out. The sandwiches are topped with tiny American flags, which is fitting, since oversize portions seem to be an American phenomenon. Ask people from Europe and Asia- see what they think. Doggy bags are encouraged. Quality is another thing, though. I doubt that very much of the food is house-made, including the corned beef, pastrami, pickles, bread. lt was ok, but not outstanding. If you have eaten at the famous NYC deli's, you have probably had better, but not bigger. If you have never been to a great deli, this may be better than what you have had so far. If you are in the area, you should probably go once, for the experience. Repeated visits may be hazardous to your health.

Come here early and on time since it'll be a huge line. They wont give you a table unless everyone is here. Came with 11 people and did I mention wear your gym clothes... you need room for all those food... everything are huge. The pancakes are bigger than the plate. The salads at the salad bar are good but not much a fan of the pickle. Everything was delicious but prepare to eat left over for the next day.

Split the large sandwich (1/2 corn beef, 1/2 pastrami) on a double date with my parents. The two guys are big eaters and even with their help we could have easily had two more people there to help is finish it. Needless to say we has a pound and a half of leftover meat. 'twas delicious. For dessert we had the blueberry cheesecake which was yum BUT next time is definitely go for something different.

They could probably just name this place, "Big Ass Sandwiches, Eat Here" and get the point across. This is your classic NY jewish deli. It doesn't disappoint in the slightest. It actually really overdoes it. The drinks come in half gallon cups which I super-appreciated. Don't have to ask for refills! We ordered onion rings for the table, which came in a huge heaping portion. They were average, previously frozen variety. I actually started putting them on my sandwiches. My girlfriend and I shared a turkey/roast beef large. We finished a little more than half of it. I was making half and half of turkey/roast beef with russian dressing, mayo, tomato and onion rings on rye bread. It was pretty darn delicious. The rest of the table got hot pastrami and pastrami/corned beef sandwiches. As a non-pickle lover, the pickle bar didn't appeal to me in the slightest. But for the connoisseur, I'm sure it's a mecca. All the pickles you can eat. On our way our we order a giant cookie and brownie. The cookie was alright as the chocolate chips are kinda just laid on top and not cooked inside the cookie. The brownie was delicious and moist. The cakes here are outrageous; we didn't attempt to order a slice (equivalent to a regular sized cake). The place is massive and there is so much going on. I was surprised we didn't have to wait. The ambiance while dated, it actually pretty neat with the old pictures hanging around. It's worth at least a visit to anyone in the Greater NY area.

No, it's not in New York, but it is what you wish a New York deli would be. Mile-high stacks of juicy pastrami, never-ending baskets of New York rye, and the most amazing self-serve bar of pickled items you will ever see. On the rare occasion that we don't take the train to New York, Harold's is always part of our exit strategy. Plenty of parking and tables and just a short hop off the highway, Harold's is the perfect pit stop to refuel your belly without sacrificing flavor. So, if you're anywhere near this fast and efficient deli, don't think of grabbing a hero at a gas station!

Harold's Deli is one of the most extraordinary delis in New Jersey. They give out ridiculous, and I mean ridiculous portions of their food. Take a look at some of the pictures and you'll see what I mean. This is the place to feed a football team. Now besides the quantity of the food, the quality is just as great. It's always flavorful and has never disappointed. You have access to a pickle bar as well as unlimited rye bread for your sandwiches. Words of advice: - Bring a large group here, not just yourself - Get the pastrami or corned beef if not, both - Make sure you come hungry because the portions are HUGE! - The place can get expensive so expect about $25 per person and leftovers. - Huge desserts such as cheesecake too Overall, what a great dining experience and always a bunch of locals.

The BEST pastrami I know! And the only place you can get a knish! Every time I visit NYC its a must go-to spot for me! I always order a knish & pastrami to-go so I can bring it back home to California!

  • Kelley C.

I've only been there for lunch a couple of times, but if you can't go into the city, this is the next best thing. The portions are giant, so not sure who could eat a sandwich, but that said, the food was great quality. I think I ate the sandwich at home for dinner two nights in a row. Great place to show visitors what a NY deli is really like.

  • Ben B.

Do you like delicious deli sandwiches? How about if they're 18 inches tall? Harold's stands as evidence that size doesn't particularly matter, but it doesn't hurt. I'm gonna drop that metaphor there. This place isn't just for laughing at newbie's reactions when a matzo ball the size of a baby is plopped in front of them. It's also damn good. The matzo ball is fluffy and tasty, the soup is salty and delicious. The meat is better than Katz's (which isn't saying much) and the pickle bar gave me a salty heart attack. I recommend the smoked salmon platter sandwich (sandwich, of course meaning an entire fish slapped onto some bagels). It's expensive, but I have a hard time finding lox that good. If you're in town and you're a fan of happiness, go here. Bring someone who has no clue so you can laugh at them. It's half the fun.

  • Janet B.

Fabulous!! Wish that i lived closer!!! The meats are so fresh and they give you extra bread for a week's worth of take home sandwiches! Bring some friends though to share the check. All portions are for at least 2-3 people and are priced to match that thought. The only downside that i have noticed is dessert. The incredible "size" of the cakes and turnovers and eclaires are remarkable and picture worthy BUT they are always "stale" tasting in my opinion. Stick with the cheesecake as it seems to be more "current".

The place lives up to its reputation as having great food, tons of seating, huge portions, and fast service. Highly recommended to anyone driving by in NJ. We live in New England, and we stopped on our way to the NJ shore of a Sunday afternoon for lunch. My wife had a cheeseburger and fries, which she said was really good. I had the hot pastrami and corned beef on rye, which is borderline the best I've ever had. Look at the pic, huge sandwich! Made 4 more sandwiches at home with the leftovers, which they gave us extra bread, mustard, and coleslaw to go. The pickle bar is good, and the Cole slaw is homemade and excellent. The milkshakes are the best I've had, yes not joking. 4 scoops of real icecream, milk, and topped with whipped cream. Omg! Go there with family. Go there with friends. Go there with a huge party. No matter what, just go. It's a great experience. Can't wait to go back and try the cake. Looks so yummy in the case when you first walk in.

What else can you say about Harolds except that you will explode if you eat the entire order. If you order a pastrami or any other sandwich...split it! its like 5lbs of meat! Every pastrami sandwich and dish I had here are gigantic and deliciously fresh!

I would love to see the expression on a travelers face when he finds out his company has put him up at the Holiday Inn near the Raritan Center. "Ugh" he goes. Figuring theres nothing to do around there, he despairs. Then, he walks downstairs and sees Harolds. "huh?" he thinks to himself. He dares to walk in and then realizes ... This place is absolutely fantastic! Huge portions of everything. And real New York types who know this kind of food travel out of NY to come HERE! That's how you know it's legit. Come with as many people as you can. Expect leftovers.

Holy Schnikes!!! Harold's serves up mountains of food...and it's good! I shared the meatball sandwich (served on a Thanksgiving turkey platter) along with some excellent cole-slaw with my wife...whoa!, was I stuffed when we finished eating! I was mesmerized the entire meal as I watched the ENORMOUS piles of food stream out of the kitchen on to nearby tables. This place is a caveman's dream! No trip to Edison, NJ would be complete without stopping at Harold's! BTW, I saw Harold walking around the restaurant...I wish I had gotten a photo with him showing off the meatball stains on the front of my shirt. On the way out, I purchased a chocolate chip cookie the size of my head!!!

My husband and I went for dinner on a Tuesday night because we heard good things about this restaurant. The décor was very nice and we were greeted and seated immediately. That's as good as it got. The food was NOT very good. The dumplings were very doughy, I had the chow fun and the noodles were so bad that I had to use a knife to cut them. My husband had a beef dish which was tough and had to be cut into tiny pieces in order to be able to chew it. You probably wonder why we didn't send it back, you're right, we should have sent it back. We just won't recommend or go back to this restaurant again. The food that we order from our local Asian delivery restaurant is a 5 star next to this one.I

Damn I love this place. Everything I have ever ate here was fantastic- corned beef reuben, perogis, even their monster hotdog is fantastic. The price reflects not only the massive portion size, but also the quality. My favorites are the matzoh ball soup and bbq beef ribs. The matzoh ball is the size of a bowling ball, but still light and airy- amazing. The beef ribs look like they came off a dinosaur. Fatty and meaty, oh so good. The onion rings are also awesome- big and thick. I would avoid taking out fried foods- they use a lot of batter and it does not travel well. I tried to do the seafood platter, but it was ruined trying to get it home. Go in and eat all the free bread and pickles you want. You can even take home a bunch of them if you want. The dining room is large and they do a good job getting you seated and fed when it gets busy. Also, the desserts are ridiculous. 1 "slice" of cake is the size of an entire cake. It can easily feed 4, probably with leftovers.

12 members of my family went to Harolds to celebrate my day's birthday. We all enjoyed our meals as always at Harolds. Everything was fresh and tasted delicious. My nephew who can be a clown called Harold , the owner over to our table to introduce himself. Harold walked over to our table with a big smile and his hand held out to shake my nephews hand. My husband mentioned it was my dads birthday. Without batting an eye, and still smiling, Harold went into the kitchen and had the waitress bring out a very large cake with a lit candle. We all sang Happy Birthday and had a good laugh. Harold doesn't know us from a hole in the wall but he was such a nice man. Thank you Harold for making my fathers birthday a lot of fun. We will be back again and again and again!!!

Every time we come here, I'm astonished that they can make the food so big and still so tasty. Every item we've tried has been out of this world: meatloaf, chicken parmigiana, corned beef, pastrami, reuben, fried kreplach, and the best monte cristo ever. Ever. I recommend ordering as if you are in a regular restaurant. Get an appetizer, get one entree per person. And then you'll have leftovers for days. You'll be able to enjoy your amazingly yummy food even longer. We've always come with only 2 - 4 people, never with a reservation, and we've been seated quickly. The place is always packed, but you don't have to shout to hear each other. Sometimes the waitstaff has been overwhelmed, but since you can feed yourself at the pickle bar, it's not a big problem. I don't consider this a diner, because it's not open 24 hours, but this is the best diner food I've ever had in a state filled with diners. Go there now.

OH MY FATNESS. I loved this place but oh dear oh dear.... I do hope that I'll never be able to see how much food gets disposed everyday!!! FOOD itself: was amazing.... BEST slices of pastrami hands down!! Never ending pickle bar was hilariously yummy!! Onion rings to fries to bread alll were amazing. Here comes toe -1 sour note: This turned into a tourist attraction= more waste. The cakes were like 12 layers? I couldn't count them cause I thought I was going to cry for the fellow Americans who actually eat them... BUTT, I give them 4 stars, because the owners were just sooo friendly, and they DO mean well! buttttt... after packing up leftovers I sworn to myself I would never end up eating it at home so it'll probably end up in the trash again.

Their food is always fresh, delicious and its an extremely generous helping. I always order their macaroni and cheese as well as their pastrami sandwich and I've never been disappointed.. I can't comment on their service because I always order take-out but the ordering process over the phone is fast and easy. They usually have everything ready in less than 30 minutes. I love this place!

Harold's Deli - Heard about it on the radio and on Man v. Food... And it did NOT disappoint! There's a few things you need to know about Harold's: 1) You've never seen portions this big 2) The pastrami and corned beef are insanely good 3) Never come here with less then 4 people - you might die trying to eat all the food 4) The cheesecakes are ridiculous 5) You WILL take food home It's truly difficult to put into words how good the pastrami is. It's a must order. Everyone orders onion rings, so we tried them and they were fantastic. Also, the Rubens were very popular coming out of the kitchen. They had about 3lbs of cheese on them, so be aware of that if you order it. Theres a chance you might cry when you see how big the cakes are for the first time. The bread and pickle bar was Ok, but you don't come here for that. The parking lot is filled with cars from NY, and when New Yorkers are taking a drive into NJ for deli ... That says it all. The large sandwich can easily feed 3 hungry people, so keep that in mind when ordering. Coming here is an absolute must!

  • L B.

Three stars because of the prices. Great service, food came quick. Sandwiches are huge, but they are not cheap. The Corned Beef was delicious. My son got cb hash huge portion but also expensive 28 bucks for a large plate. You have to go at least once and experience it. But unless everyone is On the same page and wants to share the same items, be prepared to pay more than you ever have in a deli. It is a good one. But they should have some smaller choices for people who don't eat that much.

  • Tyler K.

Great Hot Pastrami! Probably the best you will find in New Jersey. The portions are very big, better to go with groups of four or more. The French fries and onion rings are amazing, best onion rings I've tasted. Delicious and fresh pickle bar that includes a health salad of pickled vegetables, sauerkraut and peppers. My only complaint is that if you want hot sauerkraut you have to order a side of it and its around $4-5 but if you get it cold from the pickle bar its free. So I basically pay to have it hot. Other than that its a great place for families and anyone who loves NY style delis.

It is hysterical to read some of the negative reviews of this place. The service is great, the food is great. Come here, order your food, enjoy it, dont be a pain in the ass, take your leftovers home and enjoy them for the next couple days! I will travel over an hour and a half to come to Harolds any day, anytime. I love this place. I love Harolds old fashioned Jewish staples. They make so many Jewish soul food dishes that hit the spot perfectly. I LOVE this place and will recommend it to anyone.

I would have given Harold's 5.5 Stars but, over the past 3 years a regular sandwich has gone up in price from $16.95 to $22.45. Great food but wtf with the insane price increase?!?!? Thanks but I'll get my pastrami or corned beef fix somewhere else.

Been going here for years. Whenever I bring someone new they are in awe of the size of everything, and love the quality taste. I'm not a fan of the breakfast, but any other meal, im in. Favorites...Mac and cheese, potato pancake, matzoh ball soup, and those amazing little apple muffins (but beware, only at the salad bar after 5pm). oh, and the chocolate cake in the front might just be the best chocolate cake ive ever had in my life. the apple turnover is pretty on point too.

  • Scott P.

first let me warn you. you dont go to harolds alone. the sandwiches are enough for 2 to 4 people and you can get as much free bread pickles and toppings to go with it. besides being a freak show of giant food the quality is top notch it really is the best pastrami around. be warned its a bit expensive only because you get a sandwich big enough for a football team, pancakes like manhole covers , eggclairs the size of a loaf of french bread and these arent exagerations. you wont be disapointed.

  • Hal K.

So much food... It is wise to come here with a large group and share a few entrees. The average meal can easily serve 3 people. Haven't had room for desert yet, but it looks really tasty.

got the pastrami/turkey sandwich - $45 - about 3 out of 5 stars. - was good/okay. just a lot of meat, and tastes how you think it tastes. - says it feeds 4-5 people. - I THINK it feeds 6-7 regular-portion eating people - food is good, just a lot of meat. at least you can have as much rye bread as you want to keep making sandwiches out of it. - add mustard and cole slaw to sandwich for more flavor than just bland meat flavor - vanilla ice shake was very good - $10. was like drinking straight-up ice-cream. 4.5 out of 5 stars. - unlimited and world's largest pickle bar. I'm not a fan of pickles tho. Last thoughts: - This place has amazingly large portions. Just full of meat though. Around 3.2 stars, but rounded to 3 stars. - if you love pickles, you will then rate this about 4.5 stars. - scary to see people do personal food challenges here = heart attacks. Not even Adam from Man vs. Food did one here. that's how big the food is.

OMG!!! Those are the word to describe this place. A little from a guy who had dine here twice in a row. BE hungry when you are coming to eat at this place!! Their portion is EXTREMELY big!!!! My Gf and i ordered the BBQ Ribs. Even with the two of us, we cannot even finish three quarter of it. The meat were soft and juicy. Usually i will have something to say about the BBQ Ribs, but this place cook it in such a way that it is perfect!!! So five stars and thumbs up!!!

What can you say about a traditional New York Deli (so what if it's in New Jersey - I fled New York, too) that serves bacon? Welcome to the 21st Century. The large group at the next table were sharing Bar Mitzvah pictures. We were two couples, one of whom drove an hour and twenty minutes from Northeast Philly because they love this place. The pastrami and corned beef are fabulous. The sandwiches are huge. Never mind that we just got off a cruise ship that afternoon after 21 days of non-stop "fressing"? (that's GORGING to those of you unenlightened by Yiddishisms). The diet starts tomorrow. Oh, make that next week - we still have all the leftovers to consume. We ordered two monstrous corned beef/pastrami sandwiches (21.95 each - they say it feeds 1-3, but I think it's more like 6, or 18 tiny Bolivians), plus one of those bazookas that Harold's calls a Knish. It's really a large mound of mashed potatoes with chunks of sauteed onion covered with a very thin layer of dough. It's tasty, but I don't love it. It sure is big, though. Ah, I long for the long-lost but never forgotten Mrs. Stahl's knishes of my Brooklyn youth. But you can't go home again, and the only thing remaining from Mrs. Stahl is Lesley Stahl (of 60 Minutes, via Brighton Beach). One knish was too much for the four of us, but we were troopers and finished it all. The sandwiches are accompanied by all the pickles and health salad and rye bread you can scoop up at the pickle bar, along with very sweet (apple?) mini-muffins and hunks of challa-like oniony bread. We took home all the leftovers, plus enough rye to make several more sandwiches. And then we stared at, rather than ordered from, the dessert fridge. No matter how many times I've seen it, I still can't believe that any human can bake a single cake that stands more than a foot tall. And when you order a "slice," that's how big your portion will be. Nobody should be eating that much cake, even if you're sharing it six ways! This is not a place to go for a romantic, candlelit dinner. It's noisy, crowded, glaringly bright, and the tables are way too close together. There's almost always a wait for a table, though the 30 minutes we were told when we got there turned into an actual wait of two minutes! Still, Harold's is an experience that everyone should have once. Unless you hate corned beef and pastrami, in which case there is just no hope for you and you shouldn't bother reading Yelp reviews anyway.,

AMAZING. Are you obese? Do you love to eat very unhealthy food in obscene quantities? Are you average to thin and love to take home left-overs that can feed a small African village? Well then folks Harold's is the place for you. The only distended stomachs are from people who have eaten way too much - no Biafra babies here! The food is the bomb - my favorite is the beef tongue served hot with Rye Bread and nice traditional Deli mustard. The place aint Kosher but it is unbelievable! I can't wait to go back but my wife said I'm getting too fat. There already! And the slices of cake Oy vay!

Ever since I saw Adam Richman of "Man Vs. Food" eat at this place, I've been waiting for the opportunity to eat here, and I got my chance on Sept. 13 a few hours before the Ravens-Jets game at the New Meadowlands Stadium. The pickle bar was eye-opening. I like pickle chips and the salad in Italian dressing was surprisingly good. Of course, the best part is the sandwich. Two colleagues and I shared a pastrami and turkey sandwich that serves 2-3 people, and we could only finish three-quarters. The pastrami was tender and savory, and the turkey was thin. We also ordered a side of fries, which nearly rivaled the sandwich in size. Even though we were stuffed, we had to order dessert after passing two refrigerators filled with gigantic cakes. We agreed on the apple turnover, which was larger than two shoeboxes next to each other. We could only eat half. And I bought a giant cookie with chocolate chips for my daughter. I was so full that I skipped dinner. Amazing. I wish I was back there right now. Be warned: the restaurant does not accept American Express.

we were seated on the first table by the girl who welcomes everyone, and i tell you when our order is on our table and any child or new comer passes by, their reaction is:"whoa!!!" double meat order: pastrami and corned beef....it was the bomb!!! desert: an order of ice cream bigger than my adult face, that was my kids sugar supply for the weekend LOL everything was great...and kudos to Terri who is the best, most patient and understanding waitress i have ever met! :-) BTW - when they say in their menu the serving is made for sharing, IT IS MADE FOR SHARIING!

One sandwich (the smallest option) feeds a family of four and we BARELY touched the fries. Amazingly delicious- so glad we had leftovers!

Harolds is a very good, not great, deli; their market niche is serving obscenely huge portions. One "small" corned beef and pastrami sandwich, and a lox plate, was enough for two adults and two carnivorous teenagers, with leftovers besides. The price for the two entrees, and four drinks was $77.00, before tip. There is no fee for sharing. The quality is good, and the service is professional. If you're travelling on the parkway or the turnpike, it's an easy detour for lunch.

This was my first time going to Harold's in a very long time. The service was incredible. We placed our order and the food arrived in 5 minutes piping hot so no complaints with the service. I ordered the cheesesteak, which was Jewish style. I ordered the large (39.95). It is supposed to feed multiple people, but alas I finished it. It was brisket beef with sautéed onions and peppers on a large piece of bread with tons of American cheese. It was fabulous. The brisket was very tender and moist. I had to add some of the juices at the end to get through the last of the massive sandwich. The cheese was melted all the way through while the onions had a nice crisp to them. The peppers were cooked to perfection too. I also had a few pickles and peppers from the pickle bar. The hot pepper was very good with the right amount of hotness. I also had the hot and sour pickles which were good. The non sour dill pickle was solid as well. I did try the reuben with corned beef as well. It was very solid too. I thought the corned beef was not as tender as the brisket, but it was still a pleasant treat. Will I go back? No doubt.

The portion's are BIG! You must go there with a group of people. We had the knish, the matzo ball soup, pastrimi on rye and cholocolate mouse cake. It was an amazing amount of food. I will say I expected that food not to be really good since everything was soo massive, but it was delicious. The knish was fluffy and creamy. The matzo was amazing and sooo much i loved it. Again take a group and be prepared to eat and bring lots of left overs. Oh and the pickle bar...it just all too much, but fun trying.

"Have you Seen anything this BIG?" (Insert jokes here) When you are in NJ!, this is the place to stop by for Pastrami, Corned Beef and PICKLES!. But let me warn you.... everything here is H.U.G.E. Portions, Don't come alone. In the middle of nowhere, this location serves BIG portions of. Cold Cuts. Not only that, they have the BIGGEST MATZO Ball Soup. The Ball itself is GINORMOUS!. If you like Pickles... They have a Pickle Bar. The main Attraction is not the soup..... is the amount of MEAT layered up in a plate... talking about INCHES and INCHES of MEAT!!!!. So...... depending on how many people you have, you can order 1 - 4 meat topics and they will bring it to your table. (The BF and I ordered a 2 Combo (which was $ 31.00) that 2-3 people can eat). Got the Pastrami and the Corned Beef topping Provolone Cheese (Add $ 4.00), comes with the Cole Slaw (Which Became my Favorite COLE SLAW!). Everything on the menu, prices looks High, but portion is Dramatically GIGANTIC! (Yes, as you noticed I said BIG / Ginormous / Gigantic / Huge a lot). usually everyone leaves a room for dessert.... But in this case... either you SKIP the meal and have A Slice of Cake consist at least 10 inch high by 10 Inch width..... NO JOKE. Words can't explain it.... you can just look at the pictures itself!!!! I didn't expect this since the BF convinced me to come here... so it was the 2 of use out on a Lunch date and became 2 large whales coming out of the Restaurant. **** I recommend you to bring someone with you to drag you out of the Restaurant. ***** Forgot to mention about their GIGANTIC Cookies..... Is the size of your FACE!. ****** Next Time i'm going It will be a PANCAKE for Breakfast. (I heard is the size of a 16 inch pizza.......

My husband and I stopped in with our parents for a quick bite this weekend, and we were not disappointed. The place was packed on Saturday after, always a good sign. We walked in and were seated right away. Our waiter brought us our menus and took our drink order. We decided to split a large pastrimi sandwich. The menu said it would feed between 3-5 people, wrong, this sandwich could feed an army. (Please see picture). We also order a knish which was also massive and an order of keplach which looks like a pierogie, but has meat inside like a dumpling and is fried! Both were amazingly delicious. Service was fast, food was great, give it a shot! Don't let the fact that it's in a hotel scare you away! Enjoy!

If you are hungry, this is the place for you. Smallest size sand which feeds 2-3 Adults humans. The extra large feeds a state. Recommendation... Bring friends. Lots of them. They'll thank you. Food is great. large portions. It's has an old time family feel. Old does not mean dated, but it is an old-time deli with interesting characters. Smoke free! They have take out. Get the cheese cake. No slices. A cake. Again. Bring friends. And their friends too.

This New Jersey deli is the epitome of a New York/New Jersey deli. HUGE sandwiches. Like, gargantuan. They'll even warn you at the entrance to the dining area that their sandwiches are family style dining-sized. They should be since a sandwich will run you about $25. I ordered a corned beef sandwich and, when it arrived, I just kind of laughed. "Yeah, I'm not finishing that. Looks like I'll be having corned beef sandwiches for a week." I walked over to the pickle bar, grabbed a couple extra slices of bread, and made myself a second sandwich. The sandwich was good (could have used some Swiss cheese but I guess that's my fault). The cakes they were offering were ridiculously large. This whole place can be summed up with 'high prices but an incredible amount of food to justify em." I'd go a solid 3.5 stars for this place.

I really like the pastrami sandwiches and pickle bar. I always look forward to my meals at Harold's. There's just one thing that really bugs me: sometimes the waiters don't thank me when handing me the checks, or at any other points in time during my visits (twice in the last three times that I've eaten there alone). I may be old-fashioned, but I think that thanking a customer is ALWAYS an imperative. I cut my 20% tips back by $1 if I'm not thanked. On my most recent visit, the waiter seemed disgusted by his 17% tip. Well, a 20% tip must be earned in its entirety. No expression of gratitude = reduced tip. I will continue patronizing Harold's and try to overlook the disappointing service levels.

Harolds is the new jersey Jewish deli experience Ridiculous portions, decent prices considering the portions. If you are not going with a group that shares don't bother. The pastrami is second to none The pickle bar is a blast for those who don't know, they have a pickle bar with at least 5 types of pickles, hot peppers, cabbage salad and rye bread. Dr. Browns soda is a must A sleeper at harolds is breakfast The pork roll egg and cheese sandwiches are exceptional The pancakes are so large they come out on pizza pans Again....not cheap and look out for the crowd on Saturday night

I had heard about Harold's New York Deli Restaurant in Edison, New Jersey for years and how huge the potions are. I drove the 20 miles up the Garden State Parkway today to try a Corned Beef Sandwich. It probably weighed in at about 5 pounds! I'm not sure if you can tell the scale from the photos, but it was easily 7 inches tall. They also have the world's longest pickle bar! I don't eat too much bread so I took off about 2 inches of the delicious corned beef from one half of the sandwich and ate that. I was full!!! Thank goodness for large take-out bags! The coleslaw was even made in house with fresh carrots, slaw, and bell peppers. I would recommend this place to anyone!!!

Ridiculous portions and the prices reflect them too. Whether it's breakfast, sandwiches, drinks, or dessert. I ordered the Spanish omelet and was shocked at how much omelet could be derived from 4 eggs. The menu described it was covered with tomato sauce. I was expecting some sort of salsa since it was Spanish but it was actually spaghetti sauce which gave the dish an unexpected taste. I don't think I ate even half of the dish before giving up due to the size. I tried several items from the pickle bar which was a first for me. Most of the items didn't seem pickled long enough, lacking in flavour, but I did enjoy the health salad which tasted like an italian cole slaw.

So we (group of 5) came to Harold's on a Monday (Columbus Day) around 4pm and we were able to sit with no wait. We started off at the pickle bar, which had GREAT health salad, which tasted much like cole slaw, and GREATTT SOUR PICKLES! We ordered the huge matzah ball soup and we were able to split it between 5 people, with soup left over. We ordered the large pastrami, large brisket, mac & cheese, and an order of fries. Everything was great, and so much food as usual! The only complaint I have is about brisket being a little bit too dry. Even when the broth was added to the brisket it still tasted dry. We all had coffees and one large slice of cheesecake for dessert. The slice of cheese cake was $15, which I thought was a little bit over priced for the size of it. It tasted great though. Harold's was great as usual and I will definitely be back again!

I would say 3.5 stars. Mostly for the service we received. It just wasn't great, friendly or anything like that. Our waitress was an analog who wrote down our order then disappeared. There's not much to be said that hasn't been said about this place before. We ordered the pastrami sandwich, which of course is a mountain of meat. And a side of fries which was a mountain of steak fries. Everything here is a mountain of something. They don't give you non-mountain options which downgrades it a bit. Now, one sandwich will give you about 5 meals, but not everyone wants to spend that much out of the gate. The pastrami was delicious. This is a no thrills sandwich, it is rye bread and meat. Cheese is 10 bucks extra and you have to apply anything else yourself. This is why they have the pickle bar with every pickle combination you can imagine, as well as cole slaw and kraut. The desserts are ridiculously big, and how people were ordering them is beyond me. This place obviously attracts a lot of regulars who enjoy their pastrami and corned beef. The table next to us ordered a matzoh ball soup and it was literally the size of a soccer ball. Overall it was really good and I enjoyed the experience because that's what it was. I wish the service was a bit better though. I would definitely come back if I was in the area.

Huge sandwiches, prices are good for a large group of people if you share. Personally, I take quality over quantity so 3 stars for the concept, the pickle bar and for keeping Jewish deli alive.

Wow I have never received portions this BIG!! Service was very fast and courteous food was on point I will let the photos speak for it self the dining room is as huge as the portions! Clean fast and good what more can you ask for!!!

Love this place. Third time eating here and each time is better than before. The heck with the gargantuan portions, the quality is suberb. Service is always first class. We finally ordered smart, still lots to take home. One sandwich feeds five hungary men. Corned Beef was outstanding, we had a potato knish which was fantastic as a side. The boys had pancakes which could have fed an army. Pickle bar is so good. We ate the leftovers the next day after the tournament was over. Will absolutely return when in the area again.

Are you in the mood to be dwarfed by mountains of pastrami? Do pickles make up one of your most cherished food groups? Is your idea of weight loss surrounding yourself with oversized versions of common items? Well, then Harold's is the place for you. I've been to Harold's several times since my move from Brooklyn to Central NJ, and it's just the kind of experience you need if you like real deli food. Sandwiches come with several pounds of meat--try the tongue!--and you can make repeated trips to the pickle bar--try the Health Salad--to get your brine on. You like potato pancakes? They're as big as your head, but probably far more delicious than your noggin. Heck, they're delicious even for potato pancakes. The place is in the overly industrialized Raritan Center and is attached to a hotel, but finding it is worth the trip. It's hopping on a Friday or Saturday night, but the servers manage to keep up and keep you happy. And, unlike more famous names like Katz or Carnegie Deli, you are sure to walk out of there with enough leftovers for another nosh or two.

Massive amounts of food but equally overpriced. Everything was average but the Hot Pastrami tastes amazing. If you are feeding large group go, otherwise don't.

I love Harold's! Been coming here for years with my family. The food is great, the prices are reasonable and the portions are HUGE so come with a few hungry folks. Even though the portions are big, the food quality does not suffer. Our favorite is the corned beef sandwich, fries and the plain cheesecake. One sandwich will feed up to 4 hungry people. You can grab plenty of bread and pickles from the bar...so good. The staff is great, the orders come out fairly quickly and you always have a doggy bag to take home. Not much to say, you will enjoy.

  • Jasmine N.

Harold's is definitely a place where it is a must to have a group with you or you do takeout for a group of people. The prices are definitely reasonable for the size of meals that they serve. (Most meals serve between 2-3 people). I came here recently thinking that I could grab a quick sandwich with my mom because she has been raving about this place for yearssssss! When we arrived there wasn't any individual meals, which was okay because I had the option of buying fresh sandwich meat by the pound. I definitely would like to come back here and sit in.

My brother in law always used Harolds as an excuse to visit my little cousins in Iselin, NJ to pay them a visit. I never heard of the place before, and quite frankly, wouldn't have ever stepped foot inside it despite passing it dozens of times. After figuring out where the entrance to this place was, we stepped in and were overwhelmed with how many people were inside! As soon as you walk in, you see this huge salad bar with all types of pickles/toppings. The sandwiches here are not your regular sandwich. They basically put more than a pound of meat in between two really thin slices of rye. We ordered two sandwiches and that was enough to feed 4 adults and 2 kids.

EPIC SIZE Portions Here Had the Pastrami Sandwich and Matzah Bowl soup. Both of these things were enormous in size and can feed a family of 3-4. Glad I shared these with my gf. Both dishes were decent in flavor but could have been much better. I think I was just in shock because of the size. The free pickled bar was great, a lot of good stuff to choose from here. Everything they have here is huge, including their many dessert options, too bad I had no room for that. Maybe I can indulge in the 12 inch tall chocolate cake next time. This place is worth a visit at least once.

HOLY PASTRAMI BATMAN!!! In The Beginning, There Was The Pickle Bar. Try it all, but for goodness sake don't get full. Wonderful spicy sourness flavor unknown in the US outside of a slim corridor centered on NYC and surrounding area. Then The RUMANIAN STEAK with Mushrooms, Garlic, Onions, Potatoes and Vegetables arrived. Recommended by my friend, a regular of Harold's, but instantly recognizable by any Texan: Fajita Meat, or marinated flank steak for 4 people. The "Potato" we chose was actually potato pancakes, two platter-sized, thick, potatoey monsters that sit next to you and DARE YOU TO EAT THEM ALL! Don't forget to use the apple sauce and sour cream! OY VEY!.......Then the Pastrami Sandwich arrived....I know I'll risk losing friends when I say this but Truth compels me: It's a Lot like very good, thinly sliced BBQ brisket. I've also learned the obvious: Do not even attempt to eat everything the local orders. He hopes you will, and that he will have stories of your gastronomical doom to tell his friends for days, but normally, there's much leftover which you're SUPPOSED TO BRING HOME! So get a dessert. We ordered one slice of NUT AND RAISIN RASPBERRY RUGELACH. What a delightful finish!

Good god. This is why we're fat. Appropriately served with little American flag toothpicks sticking in everything, these overwhelmingly massive dishes are out of control. Two people need only order a single thing, otherwise you will be throwing out a ton of food. This is by no means gourmet food, but it is surprisingly delicious given the massive quantities and the speed with which they deliver the giant plates. After placing our order, we went over to the free "World's Largest Pickle Bar" to help ourselves to all the pickles and rye bread we could eat. This goes well with the specialty here, the massive deli sandwiches. Just a few minutes after that, the food already arrived right after we returned to our table. First was the Single Chocolate Chip Pancake ($14), the smallest version you can buy, which is the most enormous thing I've ever seen. As described by the waitress, it's the size of a pizza pie (probably bigger actually). Once we got over the shock of it, we cut it up into large slices like a pizza and got to work. It was actually quite good - nice and fluffy with melted chocolate chips that were a little sparse, but delicious when encountered in a more concentrated bite. We couldn't even make a dent in it. We foolishly also ordered one of the sandwiches, which is a must here. We passed on the $50 Extra Large one since we have some sanity, and just went for the Large (the only other size) with 2 Meats ($28): Hot Pastrami and Corned Beef. This was a really excellent sandwich, as good as any of the big Jewish delis in NY, and very similar to Carnegie. Even if you are beyond full from other stuff, make sure you try one of these sandwiches. To finish off the light breakfast, we had to try their specialty dessert, the NY Style Cheesecake ($14.45). Predictably the most enormous piece I've ever seen, the height of this slice was actually a drawback, as it was too cheesy for me to handle. I like a better ratio of crust to filling, and this one was a little bit much with the creamy cheese interior. There is enough of it though to just scrape off the entire top to enjoy the delicious crust at the bottom with a more manageable portion of the smooth, creamy filling. I love some good excess every now and then, and it doesn't get any better than this when you are in the mood for a sandwich the size of your head. Service is gruff and Jersey-like, but somehow still friendly in a way. I would love to come back again in a few months once I'm hungry again to try more delicious stuff from the huge menu of choices.

High priced big portions of truck stop food. My "giant" beef rib was mostly gristle. Sandwiches are bland. Cake too. Actually the best part is the free pickles.

Worst customer service ever. Overcharged me and my friend's credit cards so we called them. They said call back tomorrow at 10am and they would fix the charge. We did that and then they said sorry we can't fix it, come in n we'll pay you cash. So then we both met up and did that. They gave us cash but the incorrect amount so we told the cashier to which she replied "so you want me to give back the tip?" No, actually we want back the correct amount we are owed bc she factored in 20% tip for the incorrect amount charged which was over $20 btw. She was totally flippant with us and we prob should have been given our the tip back considering THEY MADE THE MISTAKE over charged us and CAUSED US INCONVENIENCE. Horrible customer service!! Never going back, Katz Deli is better anyway.

Nothing better than this in Edison and for miles in any direction. A KATZ (NYC) like experience in terms of quality of food....AWESOME ...AWESOME food. Make sure you go with a group or at least two. They suggest you to share....... If you come new to Edison, start with this one.

Excellent!! My son and I decided to dine here for breakfast today. From the moment we stepped through the door until we walk backed out the service was superb! Waitress/waiter was attentive and catered to our needs and wants. The price is very very far and reasonable for the amount of food you receive. I had enough food to last me for dinner tonight, breakfast tomorrow, and probably a small snack as well. I will definitely be back!! My advice: go on an empty stomach.

  • Albertine F.

Dear god the portions are ginormous! Which makes the prices not as horrifying. According to my husband, the corn-beef pastrami sandwich was as good as Carnegie Deli's in New York. The rye bread is delicious and you can have as much as you want at the pickle bar. Service was great. The mobster convention around us definitely added to the ambiance. If you're in a serious chowdown mood, you have to check it out. Not five star due to the lack of normally priced and sized dishes for people who don't feel like sharing something.

This is the leading cause of obesity in America.......and I'm ok with it. I really wish I could give higher than 5 stars for this place. Absolutely PHENOMENAL food, and a great price. I went with 3 buddies and we got the Corned Beef and Pastrami triple decker and split it. Amazing. Absolutely amazing.

This place has it's own vibe. Get ready for huge portions. My family loves the pickle bar and the bread. I came here when I was sick so I got the matzo ball soup and it was so good! We also got the pastrami sandwich. And the root beer is larger than your face. I come back more for the experience than the food. Service is decent

There is a reason why Harold has been in business for over 40 years and 17 of them in this location. It's because he puts quality behind the quantity of the massive piles of food he serves his customers. I came to Harold's looking for some corned beef and pastrami and what I got was his famous XL Reuben platter which was delicious. The platter consists of a mound of tender corned beef and pastrami generously layered over grilled rye and delicately covered with melted swiss. It is served with sauerkraut and Russian dressing and easily feeds 4 people. I also went with the side order of onion rings which still managed to be crispy despite their massive size. The portion served was enough to definitely satisfy two or more people. For dessert I chose the New York Style cheesecake. A brick sized piece enough to feed three people still proved to be rich and creamy, a great ending to a great meal.

The portions in this place are terrifying. I'm a person who get's excited at seeing lots of food but at a certain point it just sort of scares me and Harold's succeeds at doing just that. I like pastrami but seeing that much of it at one time, even if it's intended to be split between a bunch of people, is still kind of scary and sort of kills my appetite. Also I've seen larger pickle bars than their claimed worlds largest but I must say the onion bread and pickleslaw stuff they have is really tasty. Finally when i order a bage like on cream cheese, that doesn't mean just put a large gob in half of it. spread that sucker around

This is one of the few places I'll take the quantity over quality route. While the corned beef and pastrami is pretty good here I have had better (to my taste) in several delis in NY. Do not go alone to eat here... the triple decker feeds a whole family. That is Harold's signature gimmick. Insanely HUGE portion sizes (think 18" sandwich) do mask the fact that it isn't the absolute best but still a good quality product. The pickle bar is a nice touch as well as all the fresh breads to make your sandwiches. A side of onion rings is piled 8" high and the eclair is large enough to stick your hand inside and scoop out the filling. I do enjoy going here about twice a year just to engage in some gluttony. Be warned though... this place gets PACKED and does not accept AMEX cards.

I was excited when we first sat down, but then the excitement gave way to horror as my supersized meal morphed into an obesity-themed nightmare. Maybe I'm too thin skinned for a place like this! Harold's schtick is that everything is huge. I mean ev-er-y-thing: the drinks, appetizers, soup bowls, and especially, the sandwiches. Our party of four shared two appetizers and an extra large pastrami sandwich. Potato skins were good, but you can order potato skins anywhere. The potato knish is worth trying, since they are known for things like that. I also had a cup of chicken noodle soup, which was completely and totally unremarkable. Skip it. The hot pastrami sandwich, which was speared with BBQ skewers instead of toothpicks, was good. You've got to visit the pickle bar for pickles, but more importantly, for extra bread to eat the sandwich. As I ate, the sheer volume of food on our table started to scare me. Then I looked around. SHUDDER. All of a sudden, the restaurant seemed filled with giant bellies, giggling neck skin, flappy arms, grease and meat hanging out of people's mouths. Either I hadn't noticed it before or my vision was shaded by the enormous amount of food on our table. Places like Harold's embody the spirit of American excess that contributes to obesity. Dante himself couldn't have imagined a place so full of gluttony and excess. I quietly asked for foil to wrap up my leftovers and stopped eating. The food is very good. It certainly was an experience, but not one I need to have again. It's worth a stop to see it, but you'll be vowing to live a healthier lifestyle halfway through the meal.

Pickle Bar. Enough said. I was pretty stoked when I found out this is where I'd be having lunch this past Thursday! I grew up on these pickles and sour tomatoes so I did in fact, hear the angels sing from above when I saw the pickle bar. Even the health salad was divine! While the prices are out of my range, I have to say in the end, it's worth it because my hot pastrami sandwich was enough for 3 sandwiches and then some (I like to nosh on the meat w/out the bread). The pastrami was PERFECT. Not fatty and not salty. That's a plus in my book!

Bring your camera, you are going to want to take foodie shots of the cakes and sandwiches. ONLY go if you are three+ people or expect to take food home. This is the defacto standard for LARGE deli sandwiches. Have eaten here for lunch with co-workers and even with three big guys and myself, we never finished a sandwich. Roast beef -always order the rare - I tried the medium recently and the rare is the way to go. Turkey breast is excellent with Russian dressing and the coleslaw provided. Free pickle bar and health salad is a great starter. For a family of four, order one sandwich, get extra bread at the pickle bar and start making some sandwiches! Ample parking and if you are stuck in NJ Turnpike traffic, get off, grab a sandwich a HUGE drink and you will be a happy driver.

Come for the outrageous portions and DELICIOUS hot pastrami. This place is an experience. The hot pastrami on rye was the best I have ever eaten. The rye bread is soft and tastes freshly baked. It's not cheap, but as a treat once in a while, it is SO worth it. If you are looking for a light meal, or dieting, then this isn't the place for you. Harold's is a paradise for carnivores and deli connoisseurs. The atmosphere isn't even important (and it's nothing special) and the service is minimal... but the pastrami is killer and the portions are cartoonishly large. I wouldn't want the whole experience any other way. - - Update: Their Kasha Knishes are uncommonly good. (And monstrous)

Delicious pastrami & corned beef. Unlimited amount at pickle bar. Fixings taste average tho. Nothing outstanding but who can complain about the value. Price is $25 per sandwich but you will DEFINITELY bring home leftovers. Kids menu is $10 per meal. Lots of leftovers too. Mac n cheese is average. Nothing spectacular. Overall it's average but since the servings are ginormous, u can't really complain that much. After all, this is a tourist spot after being featured in "Man Vs. Food".

A large will feed a family of 3 for about $20. The sandwiches are massive and the corned beef and pastrami are tender and deliciously fatty. The vanilla egg cream is classic and brings a Norman rockwell pairing to mind.

All I can say is do not come here alone. Everything at the restaurant is served family style, which means meals start at around $40. The only single-serving options available are breakfast and hamburgers, which my mom ordered. She said it was alright, but nothing special. They're not known for their burgers, so I wouldn't suggest coming here for that. I can here with my whole family and my dad is a huge corn beef lover. Carnegie's has been his favorite NY deli for years because of its fresh and delicious corned beef and huge portions. When we got there my dad asked the owner if the food was better than Carnegies and he was told that it definitely was and the owner was so sure of it that if he was wrong our entire meal would be free. The corned beef was leaner, well seasoned and definitely more delicious than Carnegie's. My sister and I also shared a large order of potato pancakes. The pancakes were almost larger than the plate but unfortunately, we both thought the potato to pancake ratio was off and needed more potatoes. Anyway, it's a fun family-friendly restaurant that is a sight to see the unbelievable size of the sandwiches. Be sure to be prepared for the sticker shock of looking at a menu that only serves group portions.

MMMMMM....yummy!! Unhealthy food but I love it!! There's nothing like this in LA, well not that I know of, but still! I was here with my uncle, dad and sister. Since my uncle is the one who lives in NJ, he thought since we haven't tried a place like this we would get a Large of Corned Beef and Pastrami but then decided that since there was four of us, he got the Extra Large. What a mistake! Yes, it was REALLY good but we don't eat that much and so we only ate about half. Since we could't finish it all, we boxed some to go. We also ordered Chili Cheese Fries. This was also a lot too. We only ate about half of it. But it was pretty good. The drinks are quite large as well. The service was good here. Food didn't take that long to come out and they come by to check on us. This place is definitely good for groups. Especially if your group can eat a lot. I would love to come here again!

Right off the highways 287, Garden State and Turnpike and if you are passing through and hungry, this is the place to go. Ridiculously huge sandwiches (to split or take home). We had the pastrami, we got four meals out of it. The Matzoh Ball Soup was great! They had the best rye bread I have ever had. Get the bread from the pickle bar. The staff was friendly and nice to my little 1 year old. Once seated, look around, people really love eating there. It's a good spot. It's not cheap but it's a good value.

Wow the portions are HUGE! Classic place. What I would expect to find in a top notch deli in New York, located in Edison! Great food. New York attitude in the staff which I love. Delicious pickle bar. Menu looks expensive at first, but one item can feed at least two people and give you leftovers. Authentic! Great place visit every once in a while.

Harold's is just downright comical in so many ways. From the shady location adjacent to a highway Holiday Inn, to the mirrored walls inside and the stereotypically Jersey clientele (young and old), you must visit Harold's at least once. You're better off bringing a crowd with hearty appetites and a decent chunk of change. It might be an even better idea not to eat the day before, period. The pros? It really is more than just a deli, which I guess is why it's official name is "Harold's New York Deli Restaurant." Yes, there are sandwiches, hot or cold, even triple-deckers (which feed AT LEAST 5-6 hungry people, more like 8 if you ask me). But don't let your server rush you - take the time to review the entire menu, and you'll be surprised. 1/2 pound burgers for 2, ribs, brisket, pot roast, stuffed cabbage, even seafood! The menu just goes on, and on, and on, and includes a full breakfast selection. I hear the pancakes are the size of a large pizza! As far as the beverages go, the Dr. Brown's soda seemed to be a crowd favorite on the afternoon I visited. Harold's also boasts the "World's Best Cheesecake" but I was too stuffed to try any...check out the size of the desserts as you enter. Insane, even for a dessert lover like me! The cons? Portions are just too damn much for most people to eat. Make sure you're going right home to your refrigerator afterwards, because you WILL have leftovers, whether you like it or not. I don't think we even asked for take-home materials, but before we knew it, our waiter came out with about 6 pieces of aluminum foil and a big brown bag for the remains of our turkey and cheese sandwich and onion rings. As I mentioned earlier, the service was too rushed for my liking - obviously this place is a local attraction, even more so after being featured on Travel Channel's Man v. Food. So the owner is looking to move as many people in and out as possible, understandably. Next time I go back, I'm going to make sure to slow things up a bit. Check out the pickle bar if you're into that sort of thing. I wonder if Snooki's been here. As others have noted, the decor is...well...a step down from every Jersey diner you've ever been to. But you're not coming to Harold's for the decor, anyway. Eating at Harold's is an experience like no other. The prices will seem outrageous, but going with a group will make it worthwhile. Take out is available, too!

OMG if you can't get to Katz and you are craving large deli sandwiches (pastrami/corned beef) this is the place - off exit 11 or 10 on the new jersey turnpike - worth the excursion! I must go again to try other food items. This is quite an experience!!!

Some people rave; I say not. Way too much food and hype. Food was good but not great. With everything over, oversize -- just stole my appetite. Only thing I would do is go in the front door and take pictures of the huge cakes - send to a friend in Europe and tell them - I told you so.

I feel weird rating a restaurant I have never been to, but.... I was fortunate enough to have their layer cake tonight (yellow cake with chocolate icing), as a result of the fact that I work in a restaurant and one of our guests brought it with them. All I can say is... Oh, My God! The best cake I have ever had. Bar none. Loved every bite of it. I may have to drive 45 minutes south just to get another piece. It was that good!

Vegetarians worst nightmare and I'm not even vegetarian! Been there multiple times with the family because we are just a big family and this place is literally for BIG families if you know what I mean. I have a problem when restaurants feed you as if you are a cow. All portions are H U G E.. I'm talking like.. I ordered pancakes and I got 10 huge pancakes! I can eat, but it's not even healthy to stuff yourself like that. The guys in our family love this place because they love the pastrami sandwiches there. Seriously, they give you like 10 pounds worth of meat.. you can't even finish that..you need like 4 people to finish it! If you are on a diet or don't want to come out having a heartburn or high blood pressure, this place is not for you my friend!

Awesome! This place is great to go with a few friends and have a great time. The portions are huge but the quality is top notch. The atmosphere is casual and fun and there is plenty of parking. The restaurant is clean and the waitstaff attentive. Did I mention the food is outstanding? If nothing else, give this place a try at least once, you won't be disappointed.

The first time I ever ate here, I was meeting with some friends who had already ordered when I arrived. No one had told (warned) me of the portion sizes. I wasn't really that hungry either, we were just starting the night there. So I only ordered some fries. What was brought back to me was a plate to feed three people. The next time around I knew better and had an out of this world sammich. People tend to rave about the Corned Beef & Pastrami. But the Roast Beef or Brisket is equally amazing. If you're not into a sandwich, they do offer some nice dinners as well. The BBQ Chicken (whole!) & sweet potato fries meal is awesome. They've got some good burgers as well. On the whole a really great place to eat, some of the prices may seem high, but some of the higher priced sandwiches can feed over 6 people. But with the portions it's fair; a $20 sandwich could be your dinner and lunch for the next day or so. Definitely not an everyday place to nosh, but if you're REALLY hungry, this is the place to go.

do not come here if 1. you're a vegetarian or 2. you come alone or with someone with a small appetite. Harold's is a bit out of the way, tucked in the Raritan center and can be a bit confusing to turn in. As soon as I walked in, I noticed the open kitchen (big plus). The menu is very expansive and has everything from pancake (not plural...just one gargantuan pancake the size of a large pizza) and other breakfast foods to dinner entrees. Of course we decided on the hot pastrami sandwich. I tried the tuna melt (okay) and chocolate milkshake (pretty good...but then again how do you mess up ice cream?). I liked the pickle bar and although I'm not a fan of pickles they also have sauerkraut, a health salad, and rye bread. I don't like how they charge if you're taking some of it in a to go order, since they only give you two slices of bread per sandwich. the actual sandwich was pretty good, nothing extraordinary and to be honest a bit on the pricy side even with the size. i do wish they would offer smaller portions for people that want to sample different items though.

Be warned, I have very strong feelings about Harold's, and it has nothing to do with the fact that I'm vegetarian. Before I stopped eating meat, I had several "opportunities" to eat at Harold's and I swore I would never go back there again. I hate Harold's. I hate what it stands for. I hate the giant portions that cannot be consumed in a single sitting. I don't understand the appeal of ordering a sandwich for $20 (or more), filled with several pounds of corned beef that you'll never be able to finish. If you walk out with leftovers, you may find the next day that the meat and bread have become a little dried out, so you'll probably throw out the rest of your take-home. And what if you do go to Harold's and manage to clean your plate? Are you proud of this? These are not normal portions and the caloric content of anything at Harold's is obviously over the limit of a normal day's intake. When something as simple as a pancake becomes insurmountable to consume in one sitting, something is wrong! I'd like to point out that everyone says go with someone and share, but Harold's is located in a hotel, and there are occasions when people have no choice but to eat there alone. Imagine the poor businessperson who just spent a miserable day on sales calls. She checks into the Holiday Inn and all she wants is a light meal before turning in. She drags herself to Harold's and plans to order a small sandwich and a bowl of soup. Instead, she is is confronted with foot-tall sandwiches and slices of cake that look like they were meant for the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk. She has no choice but to order something expensive and take the leftovers back to her hotel room, where there is no refrigerator and the food will likely be discarded the next morning. It's a waste -- pure and simple. I haven't been there for awhile, but I recall that the smallest (and cheapest) thing on the menu was a $5 foot-long hot dog. Unlike the portions, the food quality is just OK, nothing outstanding. I think this is a perfect example of quantity over quality. I guess people keep coming for the novelty of it. Don't waste your money or their food.

Been going here maybe once a year for 12ish years. Food is always good. For those not familiar, this place serves huge (HUGE) portions. Obviously, it is meant to be shared. There are a few things you can get that serve more like 2 or 3 people instead of 5 or 6. The issue is you and the person(s) you go with will have to like/want the same thing. You are forced to share unless you want to buy yourself $20 sandwich or $50 dinner and eat it for the next week. They have a pickle bar with rye bread. Service is typically good. If the table agrees on what to have, then its very affordable. If not, it can be a bit pricey. Place is typical NY deli decor. Owner is always there. Also, I went here for breakfast once and it was unexpectedly fantastic!

  • Dustin G.

It really is as good as it gets... The sandwiches will feed you for a week, the pickle bar is awesome, the service is friendly even when you can't make up your mind with their huge menu, and the Harold is always there running host. I feel like they changed up their potato pancake recipe recently, but I'm not positive. To see an owner there almost everyday of operation is quite impressive, especially at such a high volume place like that. The place is not cheap, but again, you'll leave with enough leftovers for at least a week. The matzah-ball soup is RIDIC!

Real life size man sandwiches!!!! This place make sandwiches that feed you for a few days. They encourage yo to take as much bread home to finish your sandwiches at home.. Try it and experience real sandwiches.

Best deli in central Jersey. Love the pickle bar and health salad. As stated in other reviews, the sandwiches are huge! One easily feeds three people and still you'll have leftovers for the next day. I always stop by when I'm in the area. I only wish it was in a more convenient location.

  • Lucy D.

Wow, you gotta stop at this place- I've never seen a deli or even a restaurant that charged so much for a sandwich- then I saw the portion size, it's HUGE! Everything is huge, but very good food! The rye bread was incredible, I actually paid to take a loaf home. I will return but bring a crew of hungry folks with me. And the pickle bar was cute addition to the menu.

Do ya want GREAT deli? Then ya have 2 go 2 Harold's in Edison. You'll need 2 bring at least 3 extra people because the portions are GINORMOUS! Our faces are pastrami ( of course) and the potato pancake. The portions are large, the prices are large and so islet of the clientele.

    (5)
  • Rob R.

Quantity over quality, but OK if you're in the area and want to satisfy your pastrami craving. The pastrami is machine sliced, somewhat dry and greasy. It is by no means as good as a good NY deli like Katz or Carnegie, but once you get passed that, it's okay. The sandwiches are huge and they offer free rye bread with their pickle and salad buffet, so you can take what you don't finish and make another 32 or so sandwiches with the leftovers to last a month or two. Great old-time baseball photos on the wall, many of Yankee players (some signed) and old Yankee Stadium pics. Seems like the owner is a Yankee fan so an extra point for that.

I am a fan of their roast beef. I always get it with gravy to help manage the left overs that will be enjoyed for days. I hosted a party here. The servers were awesome, my guests were happy and the bill was surprisingly cheap. I saved a lot of money having my 50 person party here. I think it came to just under 10 dollars a person with food, drinks, dessert and coffee. Of course everyone had a ton of leftovers to Take home. The one downside was they didn't allow us to serve our cupcakes to the children in attendance. Other than that it was a fun day!

Its quite a decent place. But the service wasn't up to par as expected. I ordered some cake, which should have been a hassle free operation, but it still took half an hour on a thursday afternoon. I dont recommend this Harolds.

I got terrible food poisoning after eating here this past Sunday. It was either the borscht or the fried kreplach. And not withstanding the food poisoning, this is not someplace you want to go if you are interested in eating healthily. I got brought along with a group and it was very difficult to find anything on the menu that didn't look like it would sit like a rock in my stomach. The only thing that was tasty was the sauerkraut at the pickle bar.

Not a lot to order for the vegan or health conscious crew - we went here with family after a funeral and I have to say the cakes were bigger than my infant and there was a matzo ball the size of her head. Everyone enjoyed their meals and sandwiches - I had a little salad. I'm a fan because of the freakishly large sizes.

  • Kiet L.

Holy cow! The sandwiches served in this joint are GARGANTUAN! Not only that, they are DELICIOUS! True NY pastrami taste in the middle of Da Jerz. You WILL go home with doggie bags. The basic rule of thumb of ordering here is less is more. If the serving says for 1-3, it means can serve 4 people. The complimentary salad bar also provides you with extra rye bread, coleslaw, and numerous types of pickles. All delicious. Come here with a big appetite and leave a few pounds heavier.

The Good: Free Pickle Bar, Large Portion Sizes, Food Flavor, Gigantic Portion Sizes, Desserts, Did I Mention the Portion Sizes? The Bad: Prices are a bit Steep unless you Share, You may commit one of the seven deadly sins! They should really change the name to "Harold's House of Gluttony", because you need to bring your A game appetite when you come here and if you want to finish your plate you need be a pig like me! The latest trip was a group of 6 adults and my 5 year old son. Most folks went with the traditional Pastrimi type sandwiches with a couple people sharing. One person finished off an entire 14 inch pizza sized (see pictures) pancake which has to be a gut buster. I went for the meatball parm sub and an order of chili and cheese fries and finished the sub but needed help with the fries.. As always the food was superb, and the service is spot on. Every food item is bigger than big and while they cost a bit high ($22 for the sub and $21 for the pancake) you really are getting your money's worth. Two average eaters can easily share a meal (they encourage this at no extra charge) and probably have a little bit leftover. The desserts are unbelievable as well and a "slice" of cake feeds about 6 people for roughly $13-$16 I've been to Harold's a couple times now so I know what to expect. I know that I'm going to be bloated and uncomfortable for a couple hours, but my god is it worth it. When I'm heading up the Jersey Turnpike and they are open I just have to stop! Check out the pics for an idea of the portion sizes, but they don't really do the food justice!

we've been coming here for upwards of 10 years and love to come back every time we're all around. since we all lived in the area, we have since dispersed (and some of us have come back) though we all come back around the holidays. harold's is a tradition that will not die for us. portions are huge, pastrami is tasty, pickle bar is awesome! this time we started with matzoh ball soup and potato pancakes, then had brisket and pastrami (with tons of pickles and health salad) for lunch, and chocolate mousse cake for dessert. Harold's is glutinous to say the least, but it's always tasty and a fun way to catch up with friends over a good meal. service is always excellent here, too.

I enjoyed my lunch at Harold's New York Deli and the food may be a little higher than 3 stars. The thing to keep in mind as others have said is that the portions are enormous. And not like normal deli enormous but crazy insane unreasonably giant portions. It's actually a family style restaurant masquerading as a deli. For example we ordered the matzoh ball soup which I thought was very tasty. The matzoh ball is the size of a grapefruit. Perhaps bigger. My brother in law said it was the size of a baby's head. It came in a massive bowl like something you would toss a salad in. I believe it could easily serve 6 people. Not to say if you wanted yo be a pig that you couldn't polish it off between 3. But that's part of my issue with this type of restaurant. These restaurants make you eat more than you normally would. It's like when you go to the redwood forests in California and after a while you lose all perspective of how big a normal tree is supposed to be. I recommend this restaurant with several caveats. First. I recommend you come with at least 4 carnivorous minded people. You can easily split the matzoh ball soup. You don't need to bathe in it just have a bowl. Then you want to take advantage of the worlds largest pickle bar. Now, oddly enough the world's largest pickle bar only has maybe 6 or 7 types of pickles and pickled items. But the pickles are good and they also have what is called health salad which is like a vinegary coleslaw type of thing. And they have stacks of rye bread. Not an accident. So if you and your 3 friends want to finish your lunch just split a single sandwich. I had the corned beef and it was very good. Very tender but a bit crumbly. If you want to have left overs split 2 sandwiches. That way you can try the pastrami which looks pretty good. If you're still hungry which I find hard to believe get one of the giant desserts. The prices are reasonable in my opinion but bear in mind that you will pay $20 for a sandwich because the sandwich is designed to feed 4. I wish they had an option to get reasonable size portions but that's not their thing. It's a deli theme park. Keep that in mind and enjoy. My wife had the gluten free white fish platter. She enjoyed it but their idea of gluten free platter is to remove the bagels and replace them with lettuce. People who can't eat gluten do not turn into rabbits. I suggest they invest in packages of the perfectly palatable gluten free bagels that are available frozen. Even at the exorbitant gluten free product pricing I don't think it will cut into the profits of a $25 plate of white fish. P.S. I ate the corned beef left overs for 3 day

I moved back to CA for three years now and still think about this place once a while. There are just no place like Harold's in Southern California. Hot Pastrami is the thing to get, the Italian sausage are great too! I miss you, Harold's! This restaurant was featured on Travel Channel's Man Vs Food (New Brunswick, NJ Episode)

Very good food! Sometimes restaurants that are gimmicky (like having HUGE portions) isn't always good but this was great!!!! We had 4 people at our table....2 husbands who are foodies, 1 wife that's a vegetarian and 1 wife who's 9 months pregnant. All left very happy!! Matzo ball soup was delish.

Come Hungry and leave happy. Family style portions to feed an army of troops. My Recommendations cornbeef and pastrami stacked mile high. Spicy pickles from salad bar. The chocolate egg cream 32oz or a Vanilla shake are amazing. They serve stewarts rootbeer as well. This is a place where you fast till your starving then indulge in the largest portions mankind can serve at reasonable prices.

Oh Harold's, this place is so cool! Off in Jersey away from the famous deli's in Manhattan lies good old Harold's. This deli is known for one thing and that's serving up some massive sandwiches. We ordered the pastrami sandwich for 2-3 and the corned beef for 2-3. Both sandwiches were huge, piled high with fresh and juicy meat. After heading to the bread, salad and pickle line we were prepared to build our own personal sandwiches. The food is really good here but their real draw is the size of the deli sandwiches they turn out. The things are so big and are definitely worth seeing for yourself. Every item on the menu is huge. The cakes are the tallest things I have ever seen! Harold's is a cool spot and the food is also pretty tasty.

Don't go alone. I was in town for work and staying at a hotel near by. I wanted a big sandwich. This thing left its parents on Krypton. They looked at me kinda funny when I walked in alone and the waitress asked if i knew what i was getting into. I obviously did not. It was an outstanding Ruben but I felt like I was in an eating contest. I wish my hotel would have had a fridge. Take a small group if you want to make it to desert.

A deli like no other! A world famous pickle bar with all kinds of pickles and slaws! A matzo ball as big as a woman's head! A pastrami sandwich for 4! A $17 slice of carrot cake. You gotta go hear at least once and check it out - and - bring a lot of your friends! There is plenty to eat!

Food is great!!!! Portion sizes are enormous therefore u always have some for later. I am currently eating healthy so I was worried about healthy menu selections however they also have great salads & a gluten free menu. The staff is great!!!! Everyone was friendly & helpful!!!!! Many popular restaurants like this tend to eventually skimp on the customer service because they have such strong name recognition & fluid business but I must say that I have always felt welcomed & comfortable every time I have come to eat. Most meals start around $22 but feeds 1-3 people... It's fun to sit & see how much of the food u can consume in one sitting (& the staff root u on!!!!) but I have never managed to eat all of anything I've ever ordered!!! They also have a wonderful pickle bar that have various pickles, bread, & salad. The desserts are incredible but I've only admired them from afar lately!!!! Great place for a date or family day. Definite 5 stars!!!!!

i'm from new york city, and this is nothing like the great ones in the city (2nd ave, carnagie or katz'). it's not kosher (?!), dry corned beef and pastrami, and just stupid sized dishes. and expensive. we ordered the corned beef sandwich (21$!) and it could have fed four. we took it home, but it was so dry, we just threw it away. the main entrees cost $50+. but i have to say, the place was clean and busy. to nj people--honestly, this is not a deli, it's an amusement park for fat people. take the train, go into katz', and taste real corned beef.

I was visiting family in Edison over the holidays and this place was recommended. I barely got it in on our last day in the area. I'm glad we made it here. The food we had was really good and the portions were ginormous. But the reality is unless you have at least 3 people going, it's just not a realistic place to go eat. It's unfortunate that if I was looking for something to eat on my own or just with one other person, there aren't choices to feed just 1 or 2 people. True, you can take it to go. But as I saw in other reviews, when you eat it later it's just not as good which makes it somewhat a waste.

How can you describe this place in words? Simply put....the absolute champion of pastrami. I've been to most of the big name delis in NYC...but this place is the best that I have had. The health salad by itself is a treat. It is really hard not to fill up on the health salad & the 1/2 sour's. Love the birch beer too...tastes like PA Dutch but not sure. Its is not for the faint of heart of delicate eater.

I am only giving this place 3 stars because I'm a tiny person. I really don't see where a place that gains it's publicity over their portion sizes can do a small person like me any justice. I took my customer out to eat here. We each ordered a sandwich. I had a pastrami on rye, he had the corned beef.... Our plates came out looking like they should break the waiters arm. Mine was about 2 feet of pastrami, my customers the same. Our neighbors had ordered an omelet... her omelet came out served on a dish that looked like a turkey platter!! 12 eggs big! I only finished 1/8th of the sandwich, but it was litereally enough to feed a family of 4 for a week!!!! Food was good, but like I said they've gained their popularity over their portion sizes....if you're a tiny person with an insatiable appetite for wonderful food like me you're better off looking to dine somewhere where the food gets good ravings for flavor. If you're a really hungry person than....this place is for you. LOL. Walking out of the restaurant you'll be lucky enough to pass their dessert fridge. Their cakes look like they're a whopping 3 feet high. It's a shame we have to pass the dessert freezer on our way out, it's a diabetic heart attack waiting to happen!

Portions are huge but so are the prices to accommodate the them. It is a fun place to bring friends from out of town. Food is decent, seems like more of a novelty to me more than anything. Wait staff is always very friendly, but the owners always seem very cold to me (Harold, hostess, cashier). You really need to check it out for the experience if you are ever in the area. Make sure you bring your appetite

I lived in New York City on the Upper West side for most of my adult life before life brought me to Edison. I know good delis. I know NY delis. This is not it. I'm sorry. When we moved here we went twice. We didn't really like it the first time but we thought we'd give them the benefit of the doubt and try it again. Still... blech. We were not pleased. Neither were the friends we brought with us the second time, who are born and bred in the area but hadn't ever been. So, why I rated it 3 stars? If you like humongous portions regardless of the quality, you'll like it. If a gigantic pancake the size of a pizza seems amusing to you and you'd like to share one with your friends for brunch then sure, I can see that. But if you're looking for a good, tasty, quality pastrami or corn beef or any other really good NY deli sandwich, skip this place. Skip it. You will not be happy with what you will get here. They were apparently trying to one-up Carnegie deli so they give huge portions of deli meat but it's not the best I've ever tasted. In fact, I thought it was all rather sub par. So... for the kitsch factor of sharing a slice of cake which is as big as your head with 3 friends - okay. But for real NY deli sandwiches - take a train to NY. Or better yet, give up on getting one in this neck of the woods and instead go get a good Jersey deli sandwich over at Tastee Subs. You won't get pastrami or corned beef there. But you'll get one of the best Italian deli sandwiches you've ever had. It's more consistent with the area. If I do come across a Jersey deli that comes closer to the NY ones, I will be sure to post about it.

Gather along with the Sumo wrestlers in training and enjoy a meal with average weight at 200 plus kilograms. This place is very, very good. Pickle bar has 3 different types, sour, half-sour, kosher dill. The green pickled tomatoes are absolutely mouth mattering puckering. The kasha is out of this world, sticky with sweet onions - I can taste them now. The brisket is also a treat with savory brown gravy. Potato pancakes are the size of the top of a bar stool and come with homemade apple sauce. You can't go wrong but bring your appetite and the entire family.

BEST deli ever. I've been living in Los Angeles for about 15 years so there is nothing like coming home to NJ and eating at a super delicious jewish deli. MUST have the matza ball soup and pickle bar. OMG...to die for....I can't say enough about this place and I'm a hard sell!

Well, let me tell you something...................... DO NOT GO HERE ALONE. In fact bring your parents, in laws, siblings and neighbors. I would say as all the other reviews do that it is quantity over quality. In fact how can one person get a sandwich that they could eat in one sitting. Not gonna happen. We got a pastrami/corned beef sandwich and onion rings. Friends of ours had told us the portions were huge, but we could not believe our eyes when it came to the table. Since we do not have a real deli here in King of Prussia, PA this was a treat. The meat takes like real NY style deli meat, and the rye bread---fresh. The onion rings were good. And large. So here's what you wanna do. Get off at exit 10 on the turnpike, bring a cooler for the left over's you are sure to have. Go to the pickle bar and try everything out, but control yourself, you still have to eat the meal. OR you could eat a little bit of everything at the salad bar and just have them wrap your meal to go. If you order a sandwich just pick up extra bread at the salad bar, cause the bread the sandwich comes with is gonna be soggy in the beginning. This meal lasted us for 2 days. Maybe we are not big eaters and you are? We saw the mile high cakes as we walked out. Harold was at the cash register himself, and my husband learned that he sold the other???? Harold's and now only has this one. We will go again on a next trip to NY, but I would not go out of my way to travel there for lunch, as some of my friends do. Come hungry.

Absolutely GINORMOUS portions! I entered this place thinking that they are only good for their portions, but no, their food is absolutely delicious too! This is place is a win-win. I just wish they were in New York.... Check out my food blog for more detail and photos. Link is on my profile!

This family style restaurant was BUILT for my family. There are seven of us (my wife and 5 kids). We LOVE the pickle bar. The way they serve the meat and bread allows us all to make our own sandwiches. We tried the pastrami, corned beef and brisket. All three were terrific. A hidden gem was the corned beef hash (not sure how I let my 16 year old order that). It was really flavorful and would go great with a couple of fried eggs poured over it. Not a cheap place by any means, but don't let the price tags on the menu fool you. It's a once-in-a-while spend, but because the portions are so big, it won't necessarily break the bank.

So sad to report that I had a bad experience here. Bad isn't even a good enough word. More like AWFUL!! I went in to get *Take Out* Matzoh ball soup to take with me to a Party. I always loved to get this from the Parsippany location, but that is closed (under very foggy auspices, I might add) I took the containers from store and placed them upright in my trunk wedged carefully in a milk crate with towels to keep them safe and insulated. When I got to my destination, both containers were leaking. Both lids had cracked, one more so than the other. I called to let them know there was a problem. The owner, Harold, was put on the phone. He was abrupt and curt. He defended the packing and the place, barely choked out a weak apology, but basically told me too bad and to have a nice holiday. No offer of a refund, no compensation with a new food order. Nothing. I considered that call for a few moments (stunned) and decided to call back. Harold got on the phone and was now loud and obnoxious. Told me that he had NEVER had a complaint before and had been using the same containers for years. Well, working in the food industry myself, I know that to NOT be the case, but that wasn't the point-- I wanted to know what he would do in retribution? Here's where it gets ugly-- that man went so far as to call me a LIAR when I told him about the lengths I went to a) buy his damned product and b) keep it safe in transport. Needless to say, I will NEVER return and will be certain to let everyone I know and do business with what a horrible experience I had. I was so angry about the way I was treated, that I don't even want to report on the flavor and quality of the food I received. (but, I must admit, I still love their fluffy matzoh balls-- even IF all of the broth was all over the trunk of my car!! Grrrrr) Giving this place business is a shame. The owner needs to retire and get someone more customer service oriented in there to handle the public. Surely there are other establishments that are more deserving of customer loyalty. Ridiculously bad customer service.

This place is AH-MAZING. Its not for the health conscious but so worth the calories and saturated fat. First off, they have a pickle bar where they make their own pickles and sour kraut to go with your sandwiches. DELICIOUS. We ordered the friend oysters (mediocre) and pastrami and a foot long chili dog. The pastrami was amazing, it had the perfect combination of spices and went really well with the pickles and bread. I wish this place was closer because i would eat here at least once a month. The foot long hot dog was good too, it had chili, cheese and onions, great for two people. I high suggest you eat family style here as portions are huge.

Ginormous portions. The Reuben we split had could have fed a small village, we brought most of it home and had lunch for the rest of the week. The pickle bar is a nice touch.

Maybe I was there on an off day. I'm willing to try it again, but after reading all the glowing reviews, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit let down. The location and atmosphere struck me as something that wouldn't have seemed out of place in any '80s man-on-the-road movies (could just be because I'm a child of the '90s) and I half expected to see Steve Martin across the room, looking forlorn while staring down at his grotesquely oversized pastrami on rye. The fact that today was a cloudy day only served to exaggerate that effect. The food was pretty much just alright. The portion size of my $18 "large" sandwich was of course massive, and I'd expect two reasonably hungry men could easily split this (I only came as one, and I'll be having my second half for dinner.) The pastrami was sliced to sort of an intermediate thickness, leaving you without the satisfying mouthfeel of a stack of thin meat, but without the savoriness that one would expect out of a larger chunk of meat. My sandwich was served to me at a rather lukewarm temperature too, which wasn't totally unpalatable but certainly conveyed a sense of carelessness on the part of the kitchen staff. The flavor was as expected, though - no more, no less. The pickle bar was pretty good, and at the very least it's a fun and novel gimmick. The pickles didn't match the best I've had up on the Lower East Side and the sours had a bit of an odd aftertaste to them, but they're still miles ahead of anything you can grab out of the grocery store. In the end, I was left with a $20 tab for an oversized pastrami sandwich and a plate of some pretty good pickles, the leftovers of which will luckily serve duty as a second meal for this broke grad student. If the price came down maybe $5, my rating would definitely gain at least a star, but for what I walked away with, it was just too much for something that was just alright.

OH good god..It took me a week to recover from our enormous sandwich adventure. Note to self, if your kid insists on white bread -get the rye bread from the amazing pickle bar - don't order another HUGE sandwich. The chocolate cake slice was as big as whole cake. Friendly service, everyone seemed happy to be there gorging themselves...oh, and they do have salad on the menu.

Generally when you find a restaurant with super sized portions they are compensating for something. Not here. The food was delish! You also have to appreciate a spot that still allows you to order your beef "rare"...and when it comes to your table is actually rare. Lastly, save room for dessert. That's all I can say about that. Do it.

Sorry but this place definitely didn't do it for me.. I'm giving it 2 stars cause the food was pretty good however this place is so ridiculously overpriced for a diner that when I looked at the menu I instantly lost my appetite. When I walked in and saw the specials and the prices that should've given me a clue but my friend really wanted to go so I bit my lip and ventured in. I guess their deal is more for groups because everything on the menu was at least $15+. I was looking at the eggs benedict which was just that price.. eggs benedict $15?!? seriously?? I ordered the jr. hot pastrami sandwhich for around $9 which came with a small side of cole slaw and free access to the pickle bar. The pickle bar is basically pickles, hot peppers, breads, and tomatoes. My friend ordered the cheese blintzes which I don't remember the price but what he was served were 4 humongous blintzes on his plate with sour cream and some icky looking artificial strawberry jam of some sort. No one in their right mind would eat those huge 4 blintzes in one sitting, so if their gimmick is to give you more food than you can eat in order to charge more than it's not a place for me. I'm not one for left overs and neither is my friend so those went to waste anyhow. If you had the option for maybe a smaller plate that would be much better... this is why America is fat!!! It's a little deli/diner atmosphere with some nice classic b&w photography art prints on the walls, the waitresses were nice enough, and the people at the counter who I assume were the managers basically were giving us the cold shoulder. I definitely won't go here again... just not for me. I can maybe see a large group doing well here for for less than 2..go somewhere else and save some money!

Was here the last Saturday in October 2010. A 2nd attempt after came a week earlier and was told the wait was going to be over 60 minutes! Stuffed with the onion rings, the meat (pastrami, corn beef) and the smoked fish. Next time will try their desserts.... after had a chance to starve myself for three days first.

I've been here many times before when I lived in NYC when visiting friends in Jersey. This place is a solid establishment when it comes to food. They have a nice restaurant but I was on the road to Northern Virginia and did the carry-out. I was driving down the Turnpike and stopped in for some Corned Beef, Pastrami, and some Cheesecake. I'm going to be honest with you; the prices are not for the faint of heart but since I only get a chance a couple of times a year to get there, I gulp hard when they tally up my bill. So I get a pound of the Corned Beef, and a pound of the Pastrami, and a slice of cheesecake and it sets me back about $67 dollars. I know it's a bit on the pricey side but a few times a year it's well worth it.

Anything you order is gonna be good and huge portions. My son and I were on our way to a Tourney for Lax and used saved 1/2 our sandwiches for the next day. Save some room for the pickle bar, it's awesome. Service was quick and prices were reasonable. gonna stop anytime i'm in NJ, well worth the visit and time.

Harold's New York Deli is all about the experience. It's all about BIG; big sandwiches, big sides, huge matzo balls, etc. Lost in the enormity is that the food is very tasty and excellent quality. The meats, especially the pastrami, are second-to-none. The best under-the-radar dish: The corned beef hash. Go for brunch and order some. It's chunks of Harold's corned beef mixed with peppers, onions, and seasoned potatoes.

Defiantly a experience, unless your a big eater no need not to share a meal.. I had a cheesesteak and ate it for 3 days. Service is great and they have a pickle bar love it . Its good for business meetings as well, wasn't that noisy and defiantly will be something to talk about

This has been a family-favorite for many, many years, and the quality of the food has remained outstanding. There are a few duds on the menu, given that sometimes size does not correlate too well with quality, but if you stick to the classics, you're guaranteed to have a good meal (and leftovers for days...and days....and days). Word to the wise: come with a group and make sure you share! The smallest deli sandwiches are gigantic, and can easily feed 3 or 4 people -- with leftovers the next day's lunch and dinner. The go-to for us is Pastrami, and what else would you order at a Jewish deli? They have the self-proclaimed "World's Largest Pickle Bar," which has some seriously good pickles of all different varieties, as well as several types of salads. They also have muffins and fresh baked Rye bread, which you'll need a lot of to make sandwiches at the table from the giant sandwich as well as for leftovers. The matzo ball soup is also a winner. The broth is really flavorful, and the giant matzo ball is incredible given its size! Perfectly fluffy outside with a nicely dense inside that has all the great matzo meal flavor in it. Make sure you order with extra broth so you have enough for the table and for taking home. You're probably thinking that after a meal like this, there would be no way you could ever eat dessert, and you're probably right. But if you order wisely, the massive portions don't always mean you're leaving feeling incredibly sick and 20 pounds heavier. The cheesecake is fantastic, and when you order one slice, it could feed 3 or 4 easily (seriously, one slice of cheesecake one year was my ENTIRE BIRTHDAY CAKE). There is also the brownie sundae, which contains maybe a gallon of ice cream, a can of whipped cream, and an entire 8x8 brownie. I'm not saying that's a bad thing - I'm just saying it's the type of thing you order when you have an appetite and lots of people to share with. Otherwise it's a waste of some good ice cream. Like I said, there are some duds...the potato pancake is just so big it's like a brick, and doesn't have much flavor to it. And some dishes - like the cheesesteak or reubens -- taste really good, but the sheer size of it plus all that added cheese just make for a visually displeasing dish. So...Stick with the classics and you'll enjoy incredible food for days to come! And if you're coming with a large group, keep in mind they need everyone there to seat you.

Harold's is the quintessential Central Jersey s**thouse. Nestled in the comfortable confines of Raritan Center, the decor here will you bring back to a bad episode of the Jetsons. While the decor is classic 70s, the crowd here is timeless. Harold's seems to be the unofficial meeting place of Jersey's professional eaters, as the faces here come in salivating at the thought of filling up on pickle bar and deli fare. With all of this being said, the pastrami here is an attraction. The problem is that the pastrami does not even hold a candle to the pastrami one can find in an authentic New York deli. While the portions at Harold's are humongous, they are lacking in flavor and quality. Humongous portions bring in the masses, but they do not equate to a great meal, and Harold's is a living testament to this. None of the sandwiches I've had at Harold's were all too good, but I come here once or twice a year because it's an attraction. The Jetsons decor, the professional eaters, and the aura of this faux New York deli keep me from giving it one star.

This is my favorite place to eat. Hands down, nothing better. Funny thing is I don't even live in NJ. I live in Arizona. I used to live in NJ and I only wished I knew about this place back then. I used to take a lot of business trips to the east coast. There have even been a few times I have driven hours out of my way just to go here. The first time I went here, I went over to the pickle bar and went to town. I didn't understand why there were piles of rye bread. Nothing to top it with, no butter, no spread NOTHING. Then I got my sandwich. I understood why. Even a small sandwich, you can't fit your mouth around it. It's easy to explain why this place get's 5 stars. Most places that have HUGE portions have low quality product. Harolds has top quality meat and large portions. Though the sandwiches cost alot, you really are getting what you pay for. I haven't strayed past the sandwiches. I haven't been brave enough to venture out to entrees because every time I've been here (except for once) I've been alone. I can't force myself to get an entree and waste 3/4 of a meal. Usually when I go, I eat half a sandwich and eat the other half for dinner. This place just rules. If you are ever in NJ, do yourself a favor and eat here. New Jersey is not a big state. Driving an hour or two out of your way is a good enough reason to go to this amazing deli.

We got this recommendation from a trusted foodie friend when we called him up, while in Edison (just off the NJ Turnpike), to ask where a few hungry folks could get something to eat. He replied, without hesitation, "Go immediately to Harold's New York Deli". We first drove right by it thinking, "There's no way he could be talking about a place which is attached to a Holiday Inn." And ended up circling back around. One important style point: This LOOKS like the saddest, crappiest, attached-to-a-hotel-diner ever. I mean, it really looks cheesy. The setting really is something by which a dedicated foodie would be instantly repulsed. It turns out, they have (whether intentionally or not) managed to nail this decor in the best way. Deep down inside, I hope they were going for this ironic, crappy diner look...because they nailed it. I'm rambling here, so I'l come straight to the point: the food is excellent and abundant. We had the half pastrami and half hot beef tongue sandwich (which is advertised to serve 1-3 people, but could have easily served 4 normal, non-glutanous people). The pickle bar has lots of homemade pickles. The coleslaw was amongst the best I've had, with just the right amount of sweetness. There were a few older folks (encompassing about 80% of the clientele - adding to the overall crappy-diner feel) who were from up the road, swearing it was better than anything being put out by Katz's. Who would of thought a place like Edison, NJ, which does not appear to have anything else, would have this absolute gem attached to a Holiday Inn. If for some reason you find your self going down the Turnpike, this is worth a special trip. It is amazing.

"Holy sh*t!!!! WTF???!!!" Those are the exact words that came out of my mouth when they delivered my sandwich. I ordered the roast turkey sandwich. What they put on my place: two pieces of bread and sliced turkey stacked about 4 inches high on each bread!!! Hungry much? Well, you have to be to even have a chance of finishing half of your plate... If you aren't a heavy eater, make sure you come here with a friend to share your plate with... My friends and I left this place stuffed... (it was a double-flush deuce night for sure!!!) They also claim to have the "World's Largest Pickle Bar"... how true is that? I dunno, but it is the largest pickle bar I've ever seen... Anyways, I have no idea when I will be going back to Jersey, but when I do, I am definitely stopping by here again... Most definitely recommended!!!!!!

  • H C.

A bit of an unusual/cheesy location since its connected to a Holiday Inn but this place puts normal sandwiches to shame. First of all, I highly recommend the hot pastrami sandwich. The sandwiches come just with the type of bread you order and meat piled higher than you could fit in your mouth, even if you could open 5 miles high. You then head over to the pickle bar (before or after your sandwich comes) and grab more bread, plus a variety of sour, hot, dill, etc. pickles. Then, you reassemble the sandwich into a more bite-appropriate height and manga! I will say, as a word of warning, that portions are big, but then so are the prices ($16-ish for a sandwich). So, a table of three could easily order one sandwich (large), unless you want leftovers... Cakes and such are super tall and big as well. Yikes!

This is the second time in 2 weeks that I wasn't able to finish my sandwich at a Jewish deli style. The portions here are huge. Everything was so good that I had 2 meals here, breakfast and lunch. For breakfast, I had a normal eggs and sausage, but it was tasty. Then I saw people around me with giant sized (almost the size of a pizza) pancakes and huge stacks of waffles and pieces of cake. I will need to come back and try that stuff out. For lunch I had a Pastrami sandwich. The only one I've had that even come close to 2nd Ave Deli (and it may have even been better). Between the sandwich I could barely finish and the pickle bar, it was an excellent meal.

2 words.. PICKLE BAR! I feel I would love love love this place if I was a big meat eater. It is A-OK by me because they do have a small vegetarian menu and it is great! The portions are HUGE and the desserts are to die for! This would not be my first choice of a place to go but if you are looking to take someone out for cheap and who is a big eater this is the place to go!

Although I havent been here in a while, the food is massive. Suggest that you fast for two days before you go. Eating the portion size solo is just not healthy. The food is great, service was good. It is worth the wait. Go with a few people.

You must go with a group because the portion sizes are meant to be shared (and even after sharing you will wind up with a doggie bag). They do indicate how many a portion serves on the menu so this helps, but even then there were three of us and we ordered a sandwich that said it fed 1-2 and we had some left over. The pickle bar is great! I really could have made that my meal, I could not stop eating the half sour pickles. I had the pastrami sandwich with two other people and it was good, the pastrami was lean but it was not as tangy as I liked. The sweet potato fries were good and we had cheesecake for dessert. Again, we split one piece between 3 of us and still had some left over. There were a lot of large groups there and it was very crowded, so it is a great way to feed a family for a good cost. The food was good, I would go here if I was close, but would not make this a special trip. The novelty comes with the portion size. So if you go, bring your appetite and expect to bring home some food too!

Let's start with the shaddy location. The sign is hidden under the holiday inn sign and the entrance faces away from the road. It looks like an abandoned building until you see the arrow pointing you around. Once inside, it looks like a pretty typical deli. Not crowded at all although I went on a Wednesday night. When you walk in you know you're in for a lot of food when you see the desert refrigerators. My waiter sat me very quickly and pointed me to the pickle bar. I personally hate pickels so I didn't try it but it looked pretty impressive. I ordered the hot pastrami sandwich and they weren't kidding when they said it can feed between 1 to 3 people. I could only get through about half before I had to tap out. My waiter kinda laughed at me for not finishing and was telling me about how they cure and steam the meats and thats why it was so good. A little more than I was expecting to pay ($26 for a sandwich and coke) but you definitely get your money's worth.

Talk about excess??? The food is average but they feel that quantity trumps quality. I have been three or four times, each time just to take someone there, not because the food was all that memorable. Prices are high but that is because the roast beef sandwich (all sandwiches) comes with enough beef to feed 6 people. The one restaurant where you are sure to see everyone carrying a doggie bag. You and three people cannot eat one sandwich. My son had leftovers for three meals from the sandwich I brought him. When is the last time you saw a cake 2 feet high? They have this and more at Harold's. Worth one visit but I'd much rather go down the street to the little Chinese restaurant for their $6.00 lunch buffet.

Ever had a $29 pastrami sandwich? How about a $48 turkey and corned beef sandwich? $15 carrot cake? No? $13 sugar free cheesecake?? Sheesh, then you haven't lived!! Go here with an appetite and about 3 friends. You CANNOT eat one of their sandwiches on your own. The only think you can put down on your own is a coke or coffee, cuz they ain't ginormous. This is their claim to fame, I saw a foot high carrot cake. Their cheesecake slices can serve 4 people easily. If you are ever in the neighborhood, stop by and eat like a king or sin like the gluttonous pig that you have inside!!

Harold's will never get any awards for their decor or low prices, the decor is almost institutional and the prices are double what the average diner charges. If you can get past that - IT'S GREAT. Harold's is known for two things - great NY style deli / jewish style food and humongous portions. i mean really huge. A few years ago i took a customer to dinner. She was a russian emigre and very down to earth. She ordered the chicken cutlets in garlic and wine. The platter arrived with probably 8 or 10 cutlets and a huge order of fries, about a turkey platter's worth. My client started to cry! She was so amazed any place could serve so much food she couldn't believe it. It was more than they had in russia at christmas for 12 people. Anyway, the reason to go is the pastrami and corned beef sandwiches or a rueben - there's enough for 4 maybe 6 sandwiches worth. whatever you can't finish (and you CAN'T) you get 8 or 10 slices of bread and wrap up for home. grab some more pickles too. The dessert portions are enormous also. The pickle bar is great and so is the 'health salad', if you're not jewish it's a coleslaw like vinegery mix that's delicious. So overall - it's a little out of the way hidden in a business park hotel off NJ turnpike exit 10 / I-287. The service and staff are friendly and efficient and the food comes pretty fast. I can't go anywhere near as often as i'd like since it's so much food but it still takes the cake for portion size and quality. pretty damned good!

Huge sandwiches, even bigger potato pancakes. Rye bread is delicious and pickle bar and cole slaw tops it all off. Your eyes may pop out of your head when you see the desserts. A slice of cake is a foot tall!

must say this place is great for pastrami!!!! i usually get the extra large sandwich and its great for take out. The tongue sandwich is also great!!!! When i need a fix this is the closest place but when I can I rather go the Katz in the city. All said this is the best here on the Jersey side.

I don't get the hype. If you're into insanely huge sandwiches and a price tag big enough to choke a house, then Harold's should be the place you are planning on having your next heart attack. We split the corned beef sandwich, requesting the smallest size available - you DO NOT need the french fries. The pickle bar has a nice assortment of pickles and hot peppers, and the bread which you will undoubtedly need. Our sandwich was good, but it was just way too much. Halfway through my second sandwich I almost lapsed into a coma and had to run out of the place, throwing money at my colleague and complaining of clogged arteries. Ed Norton would love this place.

Holy f**kballs. A sandwich here is the size of your head. The same goes for a knish. They have an unlimited pickle and salad bar. The height of the desserts resembles a small child. Seriously, four people can split a sandwich and have plenty leftover. Go. You won't be disappoined. One of my favorite places to eat.

Since the other reviews here make it clear, let me summarize my experience. My wife and I split an extra-large mushroom burger. It came with two buns for an easy split and so many mushrooms that the pieces that did not fit in the buns still managed to cover the plate. Our side of fries was enough for the whole table of 5. My parents and grandmother were able to split a pastrami sandwich three ways, and they still had to leave some pieces on the plate. Calling this a sandwich is a little generous; it's really two pounds of pastrami on two slices of rye toast. Fortunately the included pickle bar also has mounds of bread for sharing these sandwiches. My dad said it was some of the best pastrami he'd had anywhere. Who would complain about prices here? They say on every page of the menu that everything is too big to eat yourself. Now, there were some problems. We asked for malt vinegar on fries. Outside of Rhode Island, I don't expect people to have this, but they said they did, but brought out what appeared to be Italian salad dressing. Later that night my parents returned to buy a slice of cake. It was 12 inches tall.

This place definitely has history with the pictures and autographs on the walls. It was enjoyable to look at all of them, go yanks, And you are instantly awed at the humongous cakes in the fridge in the front lobby. I can understand nobody ever wants to spend $20+ on a plain deli sandwich, no matter how many people can split it, but it is truly filling and worth it. Do not get the Bologna since its not boars head, but i would recommend the turkey or roast beef. I do not like how i have to spend $1.75 for lettuce or tomatoes or raw onions. Those extras are cheap and should be standard. The pickle bar is unimpressive especially since the only option for bread is rye. Yuck, so nasty, but they will bring out white bread per request. The chocolate cake is amazing and easily feeds a table of 9, but unfortunately the cheesecake does not follow the same fate. This place is definitely worth a visit, but wont come again for a while

As a business owner I commend Harold's on his great success and entrepreneurial Spirit. However , for me and my family the myth was greater Then the reality. I felt the same way after seeing the Sistine Chapel. I don't understand the nauseatingly huge servings Unless of course it is the shock value and how people Remember the place. This is not the Hebrew national on 86th street Under the ell in brooklyn I grew up on. The club roll is soft but not fresh soft The pastrami was not hot and steaming with the Succulent oils dripping -it was warm and dry The potato salad dry and tasted like a sweet perfume The steak fries not hot The service excellent The dessert - don't try and make Italian napoleon cake Please the italian bakeries have a hard time doing it Plenty of room a huge selection but

It's beyond me how no one has yet to review Harold's, a tired and true NJ gastronomic institution. This is an off-shoot of the famous Carnegie Deli across the river, offering a very similar menu. This place is huge and has a very distinct deli feel to it, lots of tables, pictures of the owner with various celebrities, etc. So what makes this place such a big deal anyway? First off, Harold's is the home to the world's largest pickle bar, offering every type of pickle you could think of. Then there's the sandwiches, the smallest of which is a slick 28 oz, meaning that you gotta share. Now, the issue is that the sandwiches aren't necessarily so terrific tasting, they're good to be sure, but this will not be the best Corned Beef and Pastrami you've ever had, but it surely will be the biggest. Harold's is about the experience of ordering 2-3 sandwiches for a huge party and topping it off with a 3 foot cheesecake, not the overall quality of the food, which is nothing more than "good", you won't be telling your friends about the flavors, but the size. If you're in Jersey, it's a must. Harold's NY Deli: Tutty

LOVE THIS PLACE! I love coming here even though its anywhere from 1-3 hours anyway from me, depending on traffic. I dont know where to start with praising this place. The food, the portions, the owner, all good. First time i took my wife to this place we were still dating and it was a surprise for her. I took her here and didnt say anything just that it was recommended by a co-worker. My wife gave me a weird look because it being a NY deli its in edison NJ. But i found that cool. My wife ordered the 2 meat sandwich combo, corned beef and pastrami and a soda. And I ordered the the lox and eggs, a pastrami sandwich, and a blueberry pancake and soda. And our server told us to help ourselves to the pickle bar. Which has a few different kinds of pickles, and a couple of different type of sliced bread (which gave a hint to my wife how they served their food) As our server brought us our drinks this also gave another hint of how harolds served their food. The drinks came in this huge cup, almost like a big gulp from 7-eleven. After that came I offered my wife I would give her $100 if she can eat 1/4 of the pancake :-) The pancake came and everyones heads turned looking at our pancake LOL. It was the size of a NYC pizza. and about 1-1 1/4" thick. The plate that it was served it wasnt really wide enough for it hehe. After that the eggs and lox came which was enough for 3-4 people. Then our sandwiches came. Let me say, i can eat for 2 people. But my sandwich, i couldnt finish and my sandwich. The amount of meat they give you is so much, which is why you can get more bread from the pickle bar. Prices of is a little high but considering the amount they give you, its justified. And they encourage sharing :-) I the desserts are made for giants also LOL I order a whole napoleon cake for my sister for her birthday. There was 20 people that attended and each of us had a huge piece given to us and we had given or server some too. And it still had 2/3 left of the cake. So my sister in law gave it to her dad for his friends, which took 40+ people to finish. I recommend coming here if you and your guest likes to giggle on how ridiculous on how huge the food portions are OR just want good food, and a LOT of it.

Harold's has been doing an awesome job for years. I have come here several times and am always pleased with the taste of the food. As you probably already know, the portion sizes are HUGE (I am talking like...a sandwich can probably feed 4-6 people). I try to stay away from ordering items I can get other places, things like french fries or a cheeseburger. At Harold's, the Jewish deli meats are really where it's at! The pastrami is out of this world. I am not as big a fan of the brisket, but it's still very good. The other awesome thing about Harold's is the pickle bar. All of the items on this are great and there are piles of rye bread to make additional sandwiches. Try the "health salad," which is kind of like Jewish deli coleslaw. It's a great addition to a pastrami sandwich. There are some sweet muffins, which are tasty, but take up valuable stomach space. All the pickles are great. Try them all to find your favorites! Harold's is worth a trip to Edison, NJ!

The pastrami sandwiches are as massive as they are delicious. And indeed the enormous portions are a constant throughout the menu, to the point where you'd wish they have a single-person serving option. But eating at Harold's is an experience, and it should provide you with a meal (or two) of leftovers.

    (4)
  • Food G.

Good, but not great. They should try using the pastrami from Burbank, CA. RC Pastrami is hands down the best. I'd like to see it here.

Without a doubt one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. I shared the triple-decker sandwich with 5 people and we had tons of left overs. The ry bread is soft and has great flavor to compliment the succulent meats in the sandwich. Service was great and the pickle bar is also really good. It was about an hour and a half drive, but worth it. If for no other reason, you will have a great story to tell friends on how enormous the sandwiches are.

This place is awesome!!! It is by far the best sandwich we have had! And we have been to several places in NYC for some sandwiches. We had the corned beef and pastrami. Top notch! If was closer would be here every day! A bit of advice. The cheapest sandwich is enough for 3-4 people. There was just 2 of us so I got rye bread off the pickle bar and made sandwiches to go with the rest. And swiss is a must. it's like 4.00 or something but it was about 1/2 lb of cheese! And the pickle bar was very exciting but not very good. But due to a barrell pickle is my favorite. Nothing against Harold's. Too bad we were not able to fit a piece of cake in us. they looked delicious! Anytime we are headed north we will hit Harold's. And it's right off the turnpike!

Harold's is the mothership of all that is right with NY style deli food. The huge portions are legendary. The unlimited bread, pickles and salads. There are whole groups devoted to this citadel of gluttony. Food is delish. Of this there is no doubt. However, at what point does the insane pricing justify this nostalgic waddle down memory lane?

Monstroussss.................. I mean monstrous.......... Let's just say an X-large Combo sandwich (Pastrami and Corned Beef) regular sandwich (32 bucks) fed 6 people with enough food to 3 more. The pickle bar was money and free. The pastrami was delicious (not as Katz but definitely a lot more!) and corned beef was pretty good. It's a kick just sitting there watching everyone's faces while the waiter bring them a buffet sized serving of food. This would be an ideal diner-drive ins and dives or Man Vs Food Episode. This is probably the funnest deli to go to in Jersey, and i would definitely recommend a big group of people to come here and indulge. I suggest trying the triple decker........ Good luck finishing your meal!

Man, this place is a circus, and an elephant could not finish a serving of food here. If you ever have friends visiting from abroad, take them here to learn what gluttonous excess in America is all about. The desserts are in glass refrigerator cases right by the front door, and every customer's jaw drops when they see the two-foot-tall layer cakes, and the 4 lb. chocolate eclairs. You really can't imagine how much food they give you unless you experience it. Let's just say the portions are morbidly obese. I always crack up when I see people walking back to their tables with gigantic stacks of rye bread from the free pickle bar. Like they aren't going to have enough to eat without all the bread. I once asked one of the servers how much rye bread they go through in a week, and he said something like 600 lbs. I ordered a matzo-ball soup to go, and it came in a tub, with softball-sized matzo balls. The BLT sandwich has at least a pound of bacon on it. The corned beef and pastrami, well, it's truly a heart attack on a plate. They don't use toothpicks to hold the sandwiches together here. They use those 12" bamboo barbeque skewers. Just realize that you are paying for quantity, not quality.

  • Davi H.

Delicious! Went for breakfast with 3 people and ordered one of the "monster pancakes" and bacon (there's a lb of it per order) to split, but we each ordered a side of eggs and home fries. Soooooo much food. We only ate 1/2 of the pancake (however one of the people I was with didn't have that much pancake so it was really between 2 people), but we could have definitely ordered one side of eggs less, or even two, and done without the bacon. It was great but there was still a ton left! The quantity somehow does not get in the way of quality; all of the food tasted great - like a solid diner breakfast. Plus it's so cheap (relative to the amount of food you order)! $11 for the pancake and $8 for the huge sides which feeds at least 2 people is great. Service was also good - received my food very quickly (but not too quick where you questioned the freshness) and the server was very helpful about portions, etc. Definitely plan to come back next time I'm in the area for breakfast and also to try the sandwiches!!

The "giant sandwich" shtick is amusing, but Harold's makes the best pastrami I've ever had. We ordered a pastrami & turkey triple decker for takeout. The menu says it feeds 5-6 people, and they're serious. 4 people each had two good-size sandwiches and we still have at least 3 lbs of meat left, plus delicious homemade Russian dressing, pickles, cole slaw, and most of a loaf of awesome rye bread. I can't speak to the table service, but the takeout service was quick and friendly.

Harold's "is what it is." Whether your order is for a sandwich, a hot entree or a dessert, prepare to receive a grotesquely huge portion of food. Couple this with a pickle bar, and the Harold's experience is enjoyable-- particularly with a group. Yet, contrary to what several of my fellow Yelpers have opined, the food (and the deli meats in particular) are easily bettered by most of the local deli options. The impression I've gotten is that too much time on the steam tables has killed most of the flavor, yet the moisture one would expect from a steam table is also missing. In summary, Harold's is a wonderful curiosity or novelty, a good place to gather with family and friends, and an enjoyable throwback to the deli experience of an earlier day without venturing into New York. If you're expecting much more, such as great deli meat-- and have eaten at a "real" deli-- you may be disappointed.

Harold's is a delicatessen temple. A trip here should be prefaced by at least a day of fasting. I never thought I would pay $16.95 for a bowl of matzoh ball soup. I did here, and have no complaints. It should be renamed matzoh basketball soup, because that is the size of the fluffy ball you will be served. My corned beed sandwich was absolutely obscene-and delicious. For dessert I opted for the chocolate cake. Weighing in at what must have been 3 lbs. this gargantuan extravaganza caused fellow diners to pull out their cameras and start snapping photos in utter disbelief. This establishment is what all other deli's should be measured against.

Bring your appetite. The entrees are all designed to be served Family style. Most feed 1-3 and big eaters abound. My wife and I split a pastrami sandwich and the cheese cake. Wonderful taste and the pickle bar is very good. I liked the health salad and the hot pickled tomatoes My wife loved the place, especially the cheese cake. One warning the place is very crowded on the weekend, expect to wait prime-time.

decent food, huge sandwiches, huge customers, and root beer straight from the tap. the novelty seems to outweigh the quality but don't let that deter you from giving it a try. also, there is a pickle bar.

Great Deli Sandwiches. We love the pastrami. It feeds 4 of us with out a problem. Pickle Bar is great too. You must go there at least once.

i swear I'd propose to the owner if i was worthy... First let me explain the atmosphere. The parking lot was packed so I had to park in Hilton's lot and walk through the hotel to get to this pastrami mecca. Through the hotel I passed a lounge with a sign that reads "Caribbean Theme Night" (it probably should have been named Latin Hooker Look Alike Night). So besides the nakedness and the ppl speaking foreign languages around me it hits me... the smell... suddenly everything went silent and I followed my nose like tucam sam... The minute you enter Harold's look left, the desserts, I don't even think they should be called that more like mountains or towers, etc. The eclair is the size of a small baby (u also have the option to stuff it chocolate mousse instead of the original Bavarian). The napoleon probably come up to my knees. After passing the desserts you are on your way to be seated, usually expect a wait of about 30 -45 minutes, however I waited only 5 minutes I am guessing the bad weather had something to do with it. Ask for a seat by the pickle bar, you will NOT regret it. I also suggest going with as many people as you can find to have a bit of everything because if you haven't figured it out by now, the portions are GRANDE! The pickle bar consists of all types of... you guessed it bread :) Oh right and pickles, sour, half sour, quarter sour, 3/4 sour, etc. Pickled tomatoes (yuck). The muffins at the bar are FANTASTIC; a sugary apple flavor and highly addicting. Unlimited trips to the PBar are encouraged and you can take home a pickles/muffins/bread if you desire!! The soda comes in large and tall cups. Cans of root beer are also offered. Oh and careful ordering the root beer float, it may contain a pint of ice cream and a ton of whip cream - definitely a fun first date drink ;) Where else does one go order hot dogs, potato pancakes, knish, double deep fried onion rings, and french fries for appetizer? (Cut the hot dogs into 3 or 4, they are soooo yummy even plain - and I am not a plain kind of gal). Next up the sandwiches, too many decisions. Just remember the triple Decker sandwiches can definitely feed 10 people very comfortably. The roast beef and pastrami are very mouth watering... Just take ur time picking something that everyone can enjoy or just order a bunch of small things, you will not find bad tasting food here at all. At the end of the meal, we tell the waiter we want to take some stuff home, and he gives you sheets of foil and it's up to you to do the job so wrap up some leftovers, pickles, and muffins and you now have lunch for the next few days ;)

$60 for two? Are you kidding me?? And, it was worth it!!! My wife and I stopped here on the way back from Atlantic City. We shared a "large" corned beef/pastrami combo which we could only finish about 40%. The meat was excellent. The kasha knish was terrific and the vanilla egg creams were perfectly made. Do yourself a favor and try this place just once. I live in Florida but if I have the chance to take my kids and grandkids here just once, it will be worth the trip. The only negative were the pickles on the pickle bar were so salty, they were basically inedible. Still worth five stars.

Beyond belief. Never saw a pickle bar before, but I dare say (aside from the size of the sandwiches), that's one of the very best parts. Would go back in a second, if we lived closer.

I saw this on several shows, thought I would give it a try....If you have someone in from out of town and want to show them a novelty restaurant then take them to Harold"s. Yes the sandwiches are "Huge" it is built to feed 2-3 people... what I thought was the problem, I am one person and I travel a lot so I am only one person eating and after looking at the menu, I wanted the Meatloaf Dinner, It was $55 and could feed 4 people, they did not have a single serving meal on their menu that was worth getting, even the matzo ball soup fed 2 people and was $17, this is called a deli and the waiters walk around dressed in white dress shirts and black vest acting like a four star restaurant. I got one soda and a corned-beef sandwich, with a free trip to the pickle bar? and my bill came to $40. Needless to say, I travel a lot and I try to eat at out of the way places or non chain restaurants and have had some amazing food... this is not one of them..

harold's is just like every other harold's....fantastic! ginormous sandwiches with plenty of leftovers. I come here for 1 thing, pastrami! also the all you can eat pickle/ pepper bar has a good assortment. every time I've been there, it's always packed but the wait is short; around 15 min. if you still have a little room, try the desserts. some are sweeter/richer than others but like the sandwich tradition, huge! it's a little hard to get to, just look for the holiday inn

Make sure you are really hungry. This is the kind of place you wear loose pants to. Food is pretty good.

    (4)
  • Christine B.

Absurd, ridiculous, almost obscene. It's just too much. It's really good though. You can't just dismiss it because it's sort of a "novelty" because a normal sandwich is the size of a roast chicken. It's really good and the quality of ingredients is indisputable. I won't be back often, but wouldn't hesitate to recommend it based on the pastrami alone. It is food theatre and who am I to disparage that!

    (3)
  • Vito F.

Pastrami anyone? 2-3 lbs my good sir. Wow NY prices with Texas proportions but it IS good. From the 4 piece chicken parm to the pancake larger than a medium pizza. Bring a group and share. Pickle bar! just dont get the sour ones. Will have to bring the father figure for some Pastrami like back in the old days.

Not for the amateurs! My family had been talking about Harold's for a while before my first visit. I didn't believe a word they said. All I remember is hearing them say, "The Napoleon is the size of an ottoman!" Lolol At first glance the menu seems overpriced. But then your food comes! The portions are definitely for sharing! The pickle bar is always my first stop! And those little cinnamon apple muffins? So delicious! I usually share a pastrami sandwich and knish (OMG...size of the plate!) with whoever I'm with. We enjoy bringing first timers here and letting them order before warning them. I remember bringing my boyfriend for the first time and letting him order the seven layer chocolate cake for dessert. I'll never forget the look on his face!

There is nothing not to like about Harold"s. Food...excellent, Portions...huge, service...terrific, the place is spotless! The selection is great. You need an appetite, and a companion or two, as the portions are too large for one person. The owner Harold Jaffe is a gentleman. and an expert on delis and how to run them, having had many years of experience in N.Y. and N.J. You can not go wrong here! Our first stop when arriving in N.J., which is often.

The pastrami and roast beef sandwiches are great and of course huge as everyone has stated. Other geat items I have sampled include the philly cheesesteak and chicken cordon blue. However, the best thing on Harold's menu that most people do not know about are their ginormous Flintstone sized beef ribs!! They are huge falling off the bone succulent ribs and probably the best I have ever had. The portion and sauce are amazing. They also do a great jobs with their mac n cheese, sweet potato fries, fries, and onion rings, and their knish is the best I've had. Do not forget the free pick;es, health salad, and those sweet muffins are great. Never had room for dessert but they make a damn good egg cream.... ahh Harold's is terrifico..

The pastrami was awesome and one small sandwich really will feed 3!! The chocolate mousse cake was pretty good, but not my fav ever.... But a slice will easily feed 6 or more!! Since we brought more than 1/2 home, I can tell you its actually better the next day.

  • Sheesh S.

The food is good. And as others have said.. Gigantic. The prices seem high, but when you factor in the amount of food you're getting it makes sense. This place works better if you have 3 or more people.

Meats always thin and tender. Quick friendly service. The BEST

WOW! Worth every dollar I paid! The pastrami is the best in NJ. That's my opinion. Not a katz deli, but its closer than going to the city.

HUGE! both the sandwiches and the deli itself. Most delis of this nature (Carnegie, Katz's etc) are pretty small and crampy inside... Don't get me wrong, this place gets PACKED, but it's pretty big and spacious. The meats are delicious and I love that they have a pickle and bread bar so you can go up and get tons of pickles AND tons of bread. That's one thing I dont like about those other enormous-sammich delis - you get two slices of bread and a pile of meat that no one could possibly take a normal sized bit out of. Extra bread = extra star :)

Believe the hype. For someone not raised on an East Cost pastrami legacy, Harold's provides an epic introduction. The meat is flavorful, tender, and plentiful. In fact, everything @ Harold's is (for lack of a better term) Texas-sized. (In the interests of full-disclosure, I've only eaten lunch at Harold's and then only partaken in sandwiches & sides). There's exactly one let down here, and it's the pickle bar. Given the awesome mains, I'm giving them a pass :)

Very good food. Their meatloaf parm and chicken Parm are very good, as well as their pastrami sandwiches. You get huge portions, so def make sure you know what you want and split it with someone. Trust me you will still have leftovers. It would be nice if they had individual sized portions for those times u want to pick up a quick lunch. I would go there alot more often if they did.

Quantity way over quality..................the egg salad sandwich I saw was obscene, must have been two dozen eggs to make one. Food was okay, you have to go with a bunch and have to agree on the same thing................the concept really makes no sense to me. The chocolate cake was good, there were 6 of us and we still had some left!

The only place in central jersey to get authentic deli. My only wish is for narwal size portions. We had to throw out leftovers because after three meals no one could look at it again. Grat for a group. Would love to taste a desert. And the rgalach. Just delicious!

Talk about SUPER SIZE ME! I am talking BIG FOOD here people. If you go, go hungry. I mean starving. They have a great pickle bar to start where they allow people to take out. This deli started in Manhattan as the famous Carnegie Deli. Everything is delicious. Bring the kids as they will be entertained by the size of the dishes going by.

Gigantic portions but pricey ($19+). It seems justified though cause it can easily feed 2-3 people. In my case it was my family's lunch, dinner and part of breakfast next day hahaha. Pickle bar was something though, I don't think I've ever seen so many diff kinds and there's bread for you to make more sandwiches out of your gigantic sandwich. I recommend the pastrami/corned beef combo.

The oversized portions are equal to the overpricing. The plastic red cups and cloudy old plastic plates are used in this cafeteria atmosphere. We came here to enjoy some fresh lox and bagels. After ordering a $49.99 plate instead of the 29.99 plate what arrived was fare worthy of our local simple diner NOT a deli purporting itself as a true, fresh deli. What arrived was the same plate of lox as the 29.99 plate just with some spoiled potao salad and plenty of unwanted cole slaw for the extra $20.00. That overpricing on this $49.99 plate could have been forgiven if what arrived was not SLIMELY, FISHY SMELLING, OVERSALTY STORE BOUGHT "PACKAGED" LOX. We could have bought an old package of a generic brand packaged lox from costco and had better than the veiny, horrible tasting, cheap lox that arrived at our table after 20 minutes. We complained to the waiter who just looked puzzled. The owner, Harold, stomped over to the middle of the cafeteria where we sat. He was holding in his hand the opened overdyed orange lox slab on in the package of presliced lox that anyone can get at costco, Trader Joe's or any ordinary supermarket. Wow, such unprofessionalism and lack of customer service. He made no apologies, and not to cause a scene and go into detail regarding the smell and slime in this crowd, we just looked amazed at this ignorance to good lox by this owner of a Deli. We paid the $58.00 for that mess and left the waiter $11.00 for his trouble. Mr. "Harold", at least if you are going to serve prepackaged, underpar lox in your "TOP DELI" then make sure it is not slimey, smelly and salty. Perhaps Harold can leave his post and taste the lox at Livingston Bagel to taste fresh top grade lox that is sliced fresh---at least that is worthy of the price charged. (Try Balducci's or D'agostino's for your supply of lox) Also try not to serve wilted lettuce on the platters--that also is another point of the unconscientiousness and attention to detail for customers paying such inflated prices. I can see many parties come to take home from the pickle bar a loaf of rye bread but that was not our ulterior motive for coming to the highly overrated, overpriced Harold's.

those of us who will never summit everest can experience similar exhilaration by sitting in front of a cheese covered pastrami mountain with a flag protruding from its peak. this is harold's and they do things in a big way. the food is good but the stupid portion sizes are its charm. go and conquer.

responding to East Brunswick location review, I visited with my girl friend in December both r sandwiches were excellent!!!! I had the pastrami and she the brisket. The brisket was tender and loaded with flavor, good and plenty combined with great rye bread. We split a knish which also was excellent and could have fed a family of four.

We visited while in town for a wedding and it's a good thing that we came with a party of 12--any fewer people to split sandwichs with and we'd all be dead. When the average sandwich on the menu costs $25 and feeds 3-4 MINIMUM, you're either in the wrong place ... or the right place. Every item that we tasted was delicious, but damned if they're not trying to round out your hips while they're at it. If I ever need to eat the same meal for lunch and dinner four days straight, I know just where to go. As a native Floridian (and therefore thoroughly unacquainted with the ways of true deli), I got a good giggle from staring at the pickle bar.

When you walk into this place be prepared....big everything! From cakes that look like tires on a car to piles of meat on a plate so big that they remind you of volcano projects when you were a kid, especially if they add melted cheese to the meat! All kidding aside, it's great. You have to split a sandwich with one or two others. They have a great pickle bar where the "health" salad is delicious and extra rye bread is a must. They allow you to bring some bread and pickles home so that you can have bread for the side of beef you are bringing home in your takeout bag. Everything is good here. Pastrami, Corned Beef, Potato Pancakes. Before the waitress brings your sandwich, ask in advance for extra mustard, you are gonna need it. Don't eat all day before coming here!

Not a typical deli so it's definitely worth the adventure. I would call it a "family-style" deli because other than breakfast no portions on the menu are small. The food is high quality and I recently had a takeout order of a pastrami and corned beef combo. Tender and full of flavor. The desserts in the front glass cases are insanely large...kinda looks like a Smithsonian display for cakes and pies. The best NY deli in NJ.

You can swim in the best and hugest potato knish you'll ever eat anywhere. Get 5 of your best friends and share it with them, as it is an experience that no one should be without. The bread bar - how evil an idea is that - is pretty awesome as well. The food is hard to remember, as our eyes were filled with bread and cole slaw, but it was all good too. And make the trip for the chocolate cake. An 18" high piece of chocolate layer cake, moist and married to spectacularly ridiculously diabetic-killing icing that reminds me of why chocolate cake is love. Harold's makes people happy.

We seen Harold's featured on a food show. I can't tell you which one, but we decided to go here for my boyfriend's birthday and since went back once more. Monster sized everything! We got the pastrami and corned beef sandwich with french fries and the next time with the home fries. A side is really not necessary with the amount of sandwich there is and with the pickle bar. The leftovers heated well in the oven the following day too! We had the same waiter both times as well and the service was excellent. It was steady and we never had to wait long for anything. If you have 2 or more people this spot is worth checking out. This place beats Katz by far in our opinion.

I don't know how anyone couldn't love Harold's. My dad use to bring us here all the time when I was a kid. In college, this would often be the last stop before he dropped me off for my train back to school along with a tray of corn beef and an eclair the size of a small baby. A few times, all that food came in handy when the Amtrak broke down for almost 10 hours. I fed the whole train car. Now, my fiance and I stop here as often as possible when we are in Jersey. Not only do you get more food than a single person can stomach alone, but it is simply delicious! He isn't one for an overly peppery pastrami and at Harold's it isn't overly powerful, so I invited him to try some off a sandwich I shared with my mom and now it is all he talks about. (So much so we recently had to do a take out order while passing through the area to take to his parents in Massachusetts). I also have nothing but great things to say about the staff and the service. There can occasionally be a long wait for a seat, but it is definitely worth it.

By far the best deli I've ever been to... Better than any deli actually in New York... The corned beef, the soup, the deserts, the pickle bar, even the butter to put on the bread, everything is PERFECT, and Harold makes sure it's all perfect and you can tell... The cheese B'lintzes are the best thing I've ever eaten!!! Hats off to Harold's...

The place is as good as Katz Deli and has parking!!! Everything is served in extra large portions. One sandwich was enough for me and my partner to eat there and still have enough for dinner the next night. Highly recommend this place!

  • Louis Z.

I honestly don't know what's the big deal about this place. Over sized sandwiches and portions. Had corn beef and pastrami which was so so in my opinion. In this case, bigger isn't better! Sharing is good only if everyone wants the same thing and their portion prevents everyone from ordering individually. At their price, you can easily find places around the area with better quality, service, and atmosphere...

    (1)
  • Robert R.

Just because the portions are big that doesn't mean its good. The service was mediocre at best. I'd rather take the trip to katz deli in ny then to eat there. The pastrami had way to much fat

    (1)
  • Cheryl M.

Oi vey thats alot of food! bring friends, 4lbs of pastrami can get redundant. lol Try something new here, don't get me wrong the pastrami is great but so is the beef rib dinner, roast turkey, and awesome apps. pickle bar is to die for! 2 words: Health Salad!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Kosher deli's so I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I was with Harold's. Yeah, the portions are ridiculously huge but they should more on quality than quantity. My absolute favorite is pastrami. I grew up in Brooklyn and Manhattan so that sets a very high bar to start. The pastrami at Harold's was dried out and tasteless. I know it's hard to compare to Katz' in lower Manhattan but I've had better pastrami from the deli counter at the local supermarket. I've been to Harold's for breakfast and lunch at the behest of friends but I will never voluntarily go there. My diet is somewhat restrictive so when I have to go off it - it had better be for a great reason and Harold's is not that reason. I will say though that the service was always excellent.

  • RB B.

Want a corned beef sandwich and a potato pancake? Kasha and bowties? Lots of pickles? This is the place! Very good deli. Portions are huge, so don't bark at the price of a sandwich....you can share their small sandwich with atleast two people.

    (4)
  • Ryan M.

You really can't say much more about Harold's that people don't already know. They obviously give you huge amounts, but the food is top notch. The service staff isn't necessarily that great, but the food certainly makes up for it. There pastrami is the best I've ever had, period.

I love this place I come here with the kids and we all share...the portions are amazingly big...I mean really really big I personally love the rueven with Jewish pickle on the side Great family place

Oh Lawdy. This place was recommended to me by my Jewish grandmother (who is from Brooklyn) so I knew it had to be good. My grandfather told me about the portion sizes and I thought he was exaggerating. He was not. Good sweet lord of all things holy, do not attempt to eat one of these sandwiches by yourself or in one sitting. You will leave with enough leftovers to feed a small army. The pickle bar was delicious, the sours were my favorite, and the food was very on point. I got a corned beef and pastrami sandwich, and wound up making 2 sandwiches out of half of the monstrous pile of meat that was placed in front of me. I got a piece of cake to go, which I am still too full hours later to even look at, but I'm sure it'll be supreme. Oh, and a giant cookie, which is a standard for any deli worth its weight IMO. I will be returning for my revenge, and want to try some of the BBQ ribs next time (they looked like something the Flintstones would eat) because the looks on the faces of the patrons who ordered them told me that they had either died while eating or they were getting incredible massages from tiny invisible deli fairies using pickle juice as massage oil. Either way, I'm excited to return.

  • Em M.

From the rather nondescript exterior, you may not be expecting much but as soon as you enter and see the giant-sized cakes and cookies, you should know you are in for an extraordinary experience. The portions are massive, insanely so, yet all of the items we tried were absolutely delicious - corned beef, hot dog, sweet potato fries, black and white cookie etc. Not to mention the excellent pickle bar where the health salad and sour green tomatoes might have been my favorites of the meal. Try not to get sticker shock over the prices though. When you consider how much food you are actually getting (most people leave with doggy bags), the prices are actually reasonable. We ordered the $25.95 "large" NY's best corned beef sandwich which the menu indicates feeds 1-3 but we were easily able to get 4 meals of it when we supplemented a little with the breads and veggies from the pickle bar (which come free when you order). Even the children's portions are way larger than normal ( and could quite handily feed 2). It was also fun to sit there and see everyone else's "giant" orders come out and then how they struggled to put a dent in the food. We want to go back and try breakfast just so we can see the kids faces when they bring out the big pancake! The staff is lovely and accommodating too. We had an all around great meal and we plan on going back soon. Lastly, I was told afterwards you can order the corned beef "dry" for leaner cuts or "wet" for a little more fat. We didn't specify and ours came out pretty lean, we barely had to do any trimming.

All I can say is bring your appetite - and even then it's too much food. OMG everything in this place comes in large sizes!! My bookclub had our monthly meeting at this restaurant and none of us could get over how much food you get. Each sandwich will feed at least 2-3 people. I had the hot pastrami and shared it with my sister and I was STILL able to take home food as the sandwich was too huge to bite in to. Another member had the tuna melt and it was a plate of delicious tuna with melted cheese and tomato goodness. I have NEVER seen such a large plate of tuna melt. We also ordered a plate of onion rings and french fries for the table. They were perfectly fried and not greasy and more than enough for the five of us. They also have an assorted pickle and salad bar with additional breads (cause you will definitely need them) . I would love to meet whomever can bite into the entire sandwich at one time cause my mouth just isn't that big. The dessert case had cakes that were at least six inches or so high - I've never seen cakes that tall before (unless it's a wedding cake). But after eating sooo much food you really don't have room for dessert - but next time I'm taking a piece home. I am now a Harold's fan and can't wait until I go there again.

I've been going here since I was 12 years old. I can't believe some people are just hearing about this place or never heard of it at all. I prefer to go for breakfast. Although I've had dinner here as well. The portions are enormous to be prepared to share. I dont eat pork anymore but before i stopped, years ago i still remember how good their bbq ribs were. They were literally falling off of the bone. My favorite is their pancakes!!! Some of my family even order their huge 7 layer cakes for holidays or birthdays. 5 stars well deserved!!

I've come here many times over the years, never been compelled to write a review. Had a few awkward moments here and there but nothing worth writing about. Today however a friend and I ordered the steak and eggs, and this was worthy of a review, a FIVE star review at that. If you're used to doing pastrami and corned beef, change things up and order this instead just to try it out, it's marvelous.

  • Rachel G.

Smallest sandwich feeds 1-3 and I'm alone...looks like I have lunch, airport meal, and more headed my way soon. The presentation is over the top! Shocking if you are a first timer like I was. The size of the sandwich is obscene. It is not the place to go alone unless you need leftovers for a few days. The sandwich, pickle bar, and coleslaw were all delicious. Quality and taste of corned beef unforgettable. Drinks were even super sized. Glad I got to experience this piece of New York in New Jersey. Service was okay and not very friendly...but that could just be the midwestern expectations I have.

Harold's never disappoints. We stop here on our way home to DC from NYC and always have a great meal. Two adults and two kids- one sandwich and one matzah ball soup more than fills us up. While it is expensive ($70 after tip for lunch) it is as good as any deli on the lower east side of NYC and the pickle bar is fun for my kids. Plus- they get something to eat right when we sit down. The corned beef and hot pastrami are our favorites.

  • Meredith X.

There's something about diners and delis that's just very humbling and redirects your attention to the food. Forget the bougie service, ambiance, beautiful people, strip away all the trappings. Sometimes you just want to go to a Jersey diner (or NY deli in this case), be a glutton and EAT. Went with ma and pa, ordered the large pastrami and brisket with Swiss, half was enough for the three of us and our teeny tummies. The pastrami was alright but the brisket was lovely, fork tender, topped with some of that jus, a smear of grainy mustard with a slice of melty Swiss cheese, delicious. We considered ordering dessert but we were fairly certain that we wouldn't make it through a fraction of the 7 tier behemoth slice of cake. Good price, surprisingly good quality food, would love come back with a group of 20 and actually finish an order.

  • Geoff c.

I was lured in by the sheer magnitude. I saw pics of their sandwiches and cakes - capable of swallowing a small child. Whole. Came with a large group. We ordered the #1 triple decker. Could not finish. Our server warned us that would happen. The pastrami was great. Corned beef was a little dry after the 3rd sandwich. Aside from the sandwiches, their cakes are also huge. Drink are pretty sizable too (milkshakes and floats). Anytime I want to stuff my face with deli meats, I will keep this place in mind.
