Okay - why would you ever go to Hardin? Say you stop to get gas on your way to Custer Park Or you are lost - Bottom line - if you find yourself in Hardin, Montana - and you are hungry - really the only edible food that is not super processed - is Lariat Country Kitchen! Great Burgers - real home-made pie - good American food - served from a positive happy clean kitchen! Best waitress is Sandy! Yes, she is an Indian but will not scalp you - unless you do not tip well! Skip the horrid burgers and food at Custer and come on up to Hardin and eat !

Food and service good as reported in other reviews, but prices on average $2-3 per order higher.

I stopped in Hardin on the way west. Found the Lariat country kitchen an saw locals parked out front ,a good sign. Went in an friendly waitress seated us. Got the meatloaf ,mashed potatoes , green beans an salad. Awesome. Best meatloaf I've ever had. $8.95. Then I got the home made apple pie. Scored again. If you like home cooking instead of processed chain food, try this place. I'm going back for breakfast tomorrow.

Just plain good home cooking (assuming your mom was a very good cook!) Clean bright atmosphere coupled with very good friendly service and a very good (not gourmet, just really good basic food) meal. We were riding through the area and ended up in Hardin for an overnight stop. The outside of the Country Kitchen (and the name for that matter) are not overly impressive but go on in and you will not be disappointed. Burgers, meat loaf, pork chops. Yes.

The food took forever to be made, so it certainly was fresh and made to order. It was a Monday morning about 9 and it was packed, definitely the hot spot for locals. Food was good and our server was nice.

We picked up dinner to go from the Lariat. Husband had the fried chicken - he says it was slightly overcooked but tasty. (He ate it all!) Husband ordered me the meatloaf, which I normally don't even like, but it was excellent! I think there was rice in it; it was like eating porcupine meatballs in loaf form. We both had mashed potatoes and gravy, which were excellent. Kids just had basic kids menu items (burger and chicken strips). But it was THE PIES that impressed us the most!! We even stopped by the next day to pick up four more pieces for the road. We had apple, blueberry, cherry and strawberry rhubarb. Every piece tasted sublimely homemade; there are no cans of pie filling in the Lariat's kitchen! I'm not usually a huge pie eater, but these were honestly the best pies I've ever had. Husband agrees! His favorite: cherry. Mine: blueberry. But all four were excellent. Overall, a good eating experience! If you're looking for a good place to eat in Hardin, I highly recommend the Lariat.

Chicken fried steak and eggs ordered soft scramble- got burnt omelet Heavenly Hash (Denver-style add tomatoes to hash browns) and eggs ordered sunny side up- got burnt omelet Walked out and didn't eat anything. Any place should be able to prepare a good ole American breakfast even Hardin, MT. Weak coffee too. Friendly waitress. I'm glad it happened because I found a great place on the way to the Battle at Little Big Horn-Custer Battlefield Trading Post and Cafe. Go there instead.

So glad I took a chance that the negative review was just a one time fluke and tried this place. Hubby had meatloaf and I had Matt's burger. Good food, and price was great value. Service was prompt and friendly place was full so that is usually a good sign. Would definitely eat here again.

Lariat Country Kitchen was EXCELLENT! We had breakfast here before we went on our Badlands / Black Hills adventure. There was another customer who chatted with us about traveling the roads and all - great advice! Then we were served breakfast. I had a "senior" breakfast - very inexpensive - and the pancakes were HUGE and so fluffy! Great scrambled eggs and sausages. Couldn't have asked for a better breakfast! My husband had a Denver omelet with hash browns that were perfect - buttery and crisp! The omelet was large and filled with perfectly sauteed veggies! The service was prompt and friendly. There was the "usual" crowd enjoying their own breakfast - this is definitely a place worth coming off I-90 for! We would definitely come back!
