Been passing by this place for years and always hesitant to stop in because of the exterior. The place just looks a little too run down from the outside in my opinion. However, my husband and I stopped for breakfast there this morning after reading reviews and I was pleasantly surprised. The interior most definitely keeps you busy, reading and checking things out ! Our server was really sweet, and very fast and attentive, which is a big deal for me. I stuck with my basic breakfast mix , bacon and eggs (over easy) hashbrowns and biscuits and gravy. My husband tried the Mt. St. Helens omelet ! He loved his omelet and left almost nothing on his plate ! I loved the hash browns, just enough crisp ! YUM ! My eggs were over cooked, but not the the point of being inedible though. I was not a fan of the bacon, too smokey for my taste, had I known it was smoked bacon I would have ordered sausage but still not upset with my meal ! The homemade biscuits were a change, but were still very good with the gravy. All of this with a bill less then $20 you just cant complain ! Will be back again to try out something else ! Glad the looks were deceiving this time !

Meh. That is the best word to describe this place. Its not a "coffee shop," its a diner. To me, a coffee shop offers a variety of specialty coffees. This place just has mediocre diner drip coffee. There was a note on a white board vaguely mentioning iced coffee with flavoring, but after a taste of that drip coffee I was not gonna go for it. The place is pretty cute, but it is incredibly cluttered and cramped. You constantly have people bumping into your chair. None of which would have really effected my opinion of the place if the food and service hadn't been so bad. Our waitress was an older woman (I wanna say Deb, maybe?) and that was a train wreck. We had to ask her 3 times for coffee from a pot that was 4 ft from our table. She forgot she had not taken our order and then confused our order with a different table's. She also made snarky judgmental comments about the amount of creamer we were putting in the coffee and what we ordered. We ordered 2 pieces of french toast with bacon, and a combo with eggs, ham, and a biscuit with gravy. It took 45 mins to get our food. There were people who came in 10-15 mins after us who were already fed and gone by the time we started eating. The wait wouldn't have been too big of a deal had the food had been good. But that was not the case. Sadly, it was extremely bland, and was barley warm when we got it. Also, it is cash only so be prepared for that. So yea, mediocre food, mediocre service, just..... meh.

We were in town for business and stopped in with probably expectations that were too high. I was greeted with some disdain that we didn't call ahead because we had 8 in the party, despite the place being mostly empty at 10:30 on Thursday. The service ended up being fine though. The coffee and food not so much. Consensus on the coffee was weak and we all ordered the omelettes which were just ok. The hash browns were crumbly and not crispy or hot enough. Disappointing, they need to up their game.

The omlette I judge all omlettes against. I'm tempted to get a culinary degree, move back to Springfield, and apply for a job here just to know the secrets of this omelette. How is it so fluffy? How do they get that perfect pale yellow outside with no burns and yet everything is still perfectly cooked on the inside? What is this "jalepeno cheese" and where can I buy it in bulk? I must confess I really can't review many things. I don't stray to the left side of the menu. The coffee is average, I order crispy cottage fries instead of hashbrowns, and the toast is toast. The atmosphere is right up my alley; you can tell its a dive as soon as you walk in. The staff is quirky but friendly. After a while they seemed to recognize my parents and I when we came in. They remember my dads very specific coffee refilling schedule. Anton himself is sometimes in there and he is a complete hoot. He is full of stories, opinions, and advice. Truely one of the biggest things I miss about home, you couldn't find a good omlette in LA to save your life. Other than seeing the parents this is what I look forward to most on my visits home. Here's to Anton and his magical house of omlettes.

I was passing through Springfield when we drove past Antpn's. I've always wanted to stop here since I know it has always had great reviews and voted number one for breakfast. It was noon and there wasn't a car in sight. We thought they were closed when we turned around and saw the open sign and decided to venture in. First, the lack of cars should have given us a heads up as to the food-but we kept dismissing it. The decor is made up of old menus from far away restaurants and old pots/pans hanging from the ceiling. There was only one other older couple there. The waitress was nice enough-recommended the omelets. The omelette was very spongy-almost fake looking-it lacked flavor and tasted like liquid eggs. I ordered an omelette that came with Turkey, but wanted mushrooms instead. .75 cent charge for the mushrooms......hmmm ok. THey were HORRIBLE!!! Canned and old at that...I picked them out of the omelette as best I could. The only way to eat the omelette was to drown it in tabasco. The grits were good and the toast was good-but this doesn't make a breakfast. Very sad-will never be going back....Number one for breakfast 417?? In what year????

Cute, fun place for breakfast. If you order the pancakes or waffles with peanut butter, beware - they put a LOT of peanut butter on those things. Like, a 1/2 cup. I scraped most of mine off...

Based on the other reviews, I came in with pretty high expectations. I love breakfast food, and I really love places that do it well. Anton's is not that place. When you walk through the doors you get to take a step back in time. You're greeted with multiple signs noting that they do not accept checks, credit or debit cards. Cash only. I have no issue with that, but it's important to know before you get settled in. I joked that whenever they decided to come out with a new menu they also got to redecorate as well. The walls are covered with old menus. But the menus are not just from Anton's, there are menus from all over the place. I'm didn't find the decor endearing. It looks cluttered and dirty. That's not a look I want to see in a place that makes my meal. I started out with a coffee, Cain's Brand, which is really good. I like a little sweetener in my coffee, and all they have to offer is pink stuff and regular sugar. Like I said before...they're a little behind the times. I ordered the Black Jack Omelette. It was good. Not great, but definitely not bad. I do really like their hash browns. They are shredded really thin, and were cooked perfectly. My wife had the same thing, but ordered the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits are made there, and are really soft and fluffy. More like a muffin than a biscuit. The gravy was really bland and had almost no flavor at all. I'm not really a fan of either. Our service was fine, nothing special. I will say that my coffee never was empty, which is always a positive. Overall, I would give this place 2.5 stars. I have certainly had better, but it was not a bad experience by any means. They do need to do some cleaning though. There were a bunch of dead gnats on the window sill.

My husband and I have been to Anton's several times now. Here are our reasons for returning each time: -reasonable prices & plenty of food for your money -lots of selection on the menu -decent food (delicious biscuits and gravy) -quaint atmosphere (kind of like a grandma's kitchen - very cluttered, but with a lot of character) Here are some things that we have come to expect when we go there but usually just put up with: -a probable wait before being seated -extremely crowded (elbow-to-elbow) space and lots of noise -having to visit the ATM at the nearby gas station when it's time to pay because we forgot to bring cash -a gamble as to whether we will be seated at a comfortable table out of the way of traffic or in an awkward location in everybody's way Here is why we probably won't be going back: It usually takes a pretty long time for my husband and I to get our food after we place our order. I understand that when they are slammed, we might have to wait a bit longer than usual. But the last time we visited, we waited over 45 MINUTES for our breakfast after giving our order to the waitress. Even this might have been tolerable if she had offered some sort of apology or compensation as an indication that our long wait was an anomaly, but she said nothing about our wait time and acted like it was totally normal. There is a lot to like about Anton's, but my husband and I have pretty much decided that eating there is more of a hassle than it's worth.

Do you remember the diner that the doctors and nurses on the old ER t.v. show would go to? Diners are ok on television and they are ok in real life. We went to Antons on Friday morning for brunch. Our food was as good as we eat at home. We had eggs and bacon with biscuits & gravy. (I don't order pancakes at Antons or anywhere else because someone in my household has a pancake recipe and methodology that trumps any and all restaurants.) The coffee was standard restaurant coffee -- there aren't very many sit-down restaurants that serve truly excellent coffee. Maybe Bambinos does and of course the Aviary and Heroes do. We did not wait in a long line to be seated. If we had pulled up to Antons and noticed a line of people waiting, we would've left. BOOM. Gone. I didn't think to ask if they had turkey bacon or turkey sausage. If they did, that would be a plus.

This was a great breakfast! It's hard to find good breakfast places and this is definitely one of them. It's nothing fancy, but I'll take good food over decor any day. I had a bacon and cheese omelet and it was delish. I went ahead and gorged and got the biscuits and gravy instead of toast and it was great. I couldn't finish all the food. It really stinks that they don't take debit/credit cards. They are going to have to update to modern times on that.

Cash only. Take your time after ordering. This is a small joint just outside of the college area of Springfield, Missouri.The tables are packed tightly and the decorations make for a cluttered feel (Menus from around the world adorn the walls along with various styles of cookery hanging from the ceiling). Upon entering is a SEAT YOURSELF sign. With the cramped space and the business of a breakfast restaurant, the seating could easily confuse a diner. There are 2 seaters, four tops, long tables, and even about five seats at a makeshift bar in the middle of the restaurant. Nothing special about the menu, straightforward breakfast fare. There are quite a few omelets on the menu, which is always a good thing. The biscuits and gravy were not Earth shattering but at least they were offered. The malted waffle was a typical griddle and serve type. Very tasty and not at all over cooked, the waffle was the best thing at the table. Sausages come in both links and patties (Always a big plus for me!). The rest of the table raved about the hashbrowns. The service was good. Our waitress was friendly and really on the ball with re-filling the table's coffee and water. At the end, Anton walked to each table and thanked them for coming in to eat. Its a nice touch which all small businesses should remember to do. Nice little breakfast spot.

Sure you'll need cash, but it's a great place. I haven't been a while since I moved away, but it still feels the same and serves some great food.

Like one of the other reviewers, I came here with pretty high expectations and was sorely disappointed. I love the kitsch decor, but it ends there. The coffee was mediocre, even for what somebody called truckstop coffee, the omelette portion was small, and really lacking flavor (I had the Southwestern), and the grits were runny - they were actually sitting in water. It's a bit annoying that the restaurant only accepts cash but certainly something I'll put up with if the establishment serves great food at a reasonable price. Hopefully, given its apparent legacy in Springfield, they'll turn things around.

Kitschy decor (think white trash pack rat) lines the walls and shelves. Food ranges from okay to really good (if you eat here I highly recommend the Scrambled Eggs Anton), and the service is adequate and attentive enough. Middle of the road, but still a pretty good breakfast stop for the Springfield area.

I love Anton's. Best omelette's I have had. The decor is a little old fashioned, and sure, it could probably be cleaned a bit better, but overall I love the food! The servers are nice and you can tell that they have a lot of regulars. The coffee is "ehhhhh" but order an omelette and you'll totally forget about your coffee. The hungry student breakfast is a stupendous deal, that most people miss.

Soooo slow. 50 minutes to get food. The food was fine. Coffee was average truck stop coffee. The acoustics are the worst. There was no talking at our table as you had to shout to be heard. They did say that they were unusually busy. If they were at 25% of capacity, it might have been a pleasant experience. It just isn't designed for anything more than 50% capacity as it becomes too loud and too slow.

This unconventional breakfast house is pretty visually stimulating once you cross the threshold. An array of grizzled diner menus dot the walls, and pots and pans hang like lights on a chandelier from old wagon wheels. While, the decor is pretty hodgepodgeish and cluttered, aspects of it somehow have Dutch undertones. This haphazard decor sets the mood for the bustling, down home, no frills eating experience. The service is efficient and to the point (No phony bullshit fluff here). I get the impression that the servers have spent years serving the masses, and you can see that "real" "lifer" quality in their systematic process. I am guessing that there is not a lot of turnover at a place like this. Okay on to the food. It was pretty slammed when we dropped in mid-morning on a Saturday for a pre-Oktoberfest beer drinking feast.. Luckily, we were offered immediate seating... but in an awkward location behind the bar. In limbo somewhere between the traditional dinning area and the kitchen, I sort of felt like we were straddling two different worlds. This location afforded us views of the kitchen and at all the other feasters. It also caused me to dwell on the perpetually wide open ice bin.. which did seem to be a tad unsanitary. I ordered my beloved french toast and a side of scrambled eggs. The beau went for a waffle with a fried egg on top and bacon. My french toast was easily the better of the two meals. Its two delightful slices of battered and grilled texas toast married the perfect combination of crusty exterior and buttery airy interior. It was served with whipped butter and hot maple syrup. It wasn't fancy french toast, but it was simple and satisfying. The beau's waffle looked nearly postcard perfect but upon consumption it fell a bit short. It had an overly crunchy exterior with a too dry and vacant interior. Overall, it tasted like it had been in the plaid pancake maker too long. While 3 stars might seem bit harsh for a generally enjoyable and interesting breakfast. I contend that my experience was exactly as the stars state... A-OK. Nothing pitiful and nothing fantastic. Anton's is inexpensive and solid at serving up your standard homey fare. I almost forgot... This place is CASH ONLY. So be prepared for that.

Anton's is a great little breakfast and lunch café--easily one of the best places to eat breakfast in town. The decor is an interesting mix of old cooking utensils and menus from dozens of restaurants from all over the country. The wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the food is economically priced. There are a number of breakfast specials for those on a really tight budget. Anton's makes terrific omelets, but the real strengths of the place are its biscuits and its bacon. The biscuits are genuine scratch-baked buttermilk biscuits--you can't get those at very many places. (The downside is that the slight sour tang may taste decidedly odd to people who are used to the ordinary garden-variety biscuits you get everywhere else.) Their bacon is some of the best bacon I have ever had anywhere, restaurant or home--it's also excellent in their BLTs at lunch. The only downside to the place is that, in this era of easy payment through checks and credit cards, it still only accepts cash--so if you don't have the money in your wallet to cover breakfast, you'll have to eat somewhere else.
