I drive Highway 33 about 20 times a year and Cloquet is the required stop because there's not much to find north of Cloquet. For a while, it had to be Gordy's -- hamburger sometimes, fish sandwich others. They do make a good crisp fish sandwich but the white bread and the bad coffee make it at best a ho-hum. It's a sad day when you find yourself stopping at Subway to save 15 minutes of waiting and about ten ounces of fat, but that's the sad story from someone whose passport still says he was born in Cloquet.

Another Guy Fieri spot we visited on a long road trip this summer. Gordy's is good and now that we have eaten at two DDD visited locations, I must say Guy has a good taste when it comes to food. The location is Americana :)

This was a great stop on our way to Jay Cooke state park- the food was tasty, especially the fries and malts. The portions on the fries and onion rings were huge. The playground was awesome after two hours in the car, and we all enjoyed our meals! The burgers are better than fast food.

The end of the summer means the end of another season of Gordy's. Luckily, a business trip to Two Harbors allowed me one last stop at the Hi Hat for the year. As usual, the folks at Gordy's made the detour off I35 completely worth it. The burgers are, as they advertise, hand formed and made to order. A short wait in line (and it seems like there is ALWAYS a line) and I put in my order for a bacon cheeseburger, fries and one of their amazing blackberry shakes. 4 minutes later (yes, I was timing it) and my food was ready. The burgers here are very good - no, not the most amazing burger you'll ever have but everything is fresh and perfectly made. Juicy beef, fresh buns and perfectly cooked bacon - all with just enough grease so you knew it was a real burger. Now the burgers are certainly worth the trip but the real reason I crave this place is the shakes/malts. They are amazing - especially if you get there when they are making the fresh blackberry ones. I'm always tempted to order them by the gallon. The only bad new is that they close up shop for the season on Sept 20th this year (2015) so I will have to wait until next spring to see the folks at the Hi Hat again.

Wow, what a treat !! Had the Fish San---4 huge, juicy pieces of Alaskan White fish. While it did have a line, they serve it up PDQ. Terrific Value. This place is on my list for my next trip to MN

First time we stopped was the day after they shut down for season, this year caught them the day before. Glad we did. Burgers and fries were good, old time 50s 60s style decor, meat counter style ordering which is different, people are nice. Portions are good and they make a lot of original menu items, pattied burgers, hand dip this and homemade that, if you get my drift. The prices are higher than they should be but that I believe its for the cost of labor, twelve people working in a 80 person resturant and none of them are waitresses. You do all the work except cook. This is guys pick on drive in and dives. Great stop if passing through, but I would stick to burgers or fish not hot dog conies only down fall. Season over around sept 20th.

Best cheeseburger ever! Stopped on my way home from the north shore. I normally want to get home and unpack and get to all of the things I didn't do over the weekend. But, thought I would find Gordy's this time. Just 4 miles off the freeway, I'm glad I kept driving! Awesome place. Best cheeseburger, excellent onion rings.

Skip breakfast and go here for lunch. Burgers are awesome and the cheese curds and onion rings are superb. Treat yourself to a blackberry milkshake - awesome. Best burger and lunch I've had in years.

The best burger in the north fab burgers and fries great spinach strawberry salad if you want to keep it light but the blackberry shake is the bomb Don't miss it!

On our way to the BWCA we stopped here before and after the trip. This gave us plenty of opportunity to sample the menu. The Big "G" burger was good. Not extra ordinary, but good. I had all the fixin's on it. I didn't realize it didn't come with fries either, which I was kind of bummed about. The onion rings I passed on the second time here. While they were nice and large, I didn't like the breading at all. Coming back from the BWCA my taste buds were fresh and awake, ready for some good food. I wasn't sick of fish yet, so I ordered the fish and chips with some Wisconsin Cheese Curds. I definitely recommend the fish and chips here. It came with about 5 fillets and they were fried to perfection. The fires are delicious too. I loved the dippable/squeezable ketchup that came with it. The cheese curds were a cut above average for me. They certainly hit the spot. As for the nonfood items, the service was good once you figured out how things worked around there. Wait in line, and try to order. Wait until your number is called, then get food and pay. Pretty easy if you can find the end of the line in the little ordering area. The bathrooms were not so appetizing. Actually they were pretty gross. Not very clean at all.

Burgers were good as were the French fries. I enjoyed my chocolate shake! So yummy!! I didn't care for the onion rings. They weren't bad, just not what I enjoy. The breaking was odd and the onions were still very firm, I enjoy my onions softer.

So, I saw this place on TripeD and I've heard from several others that this place has great burgers. I stopped by this place on my way up to Duluth to watch the runners for Grandma's Marathon (June 2012). Stopped by this place around 3PM on a Friday afternoon. The place was pretty quiet, which is what I had expected. The menu is old school and there is also the whiteboard version next to the registers. I decided on the double cheeseburger and onions rings; I would've gotten the Big G Burger, but got the message after I placed my order. You order and then pay once the food is ready, which is a little different. The decor inside is pretty much from "back in the day" and is very fitting and makes for a visit an experience. The wait wasn't very long before I got my food. Grabbed a seat outside and began to dig in. Now, I know there are plenty of people that enjoy this place, but the double cheese that I ordered tasted like a cheese burger from the golden arch. I don't know what it is, the seasoning, the diced onions; I don't know. But after my first bite, I had no idea what the big deal was all about. Maybe I needed to order something else?! I know things are hand made and made with care, but the flavor reminded me of that one place that serves billions. The onion rings were fantastic, crispy and very tasty. No complaints there. For all of you that haven't been here before, I'll leave it to you to make a judgment. As for me, I'll have to try something else on the menu when I'm on my way to Duluth.

When driving thru Cloquet, this is a must. Great burgers, onion rings and malts.

Beyond overrated. Culver's has a better burger than these guys. They live off the tv spot.

Old-timey drive-ins have always had an allure for me, and Gordy's Hi Hat is no exception. It's a little out of the way to get here, but if you find yourself in the area, I would recommend a stop. Service is great- we ordered at the counter from a very friendly gentleman. I ordered the California burger, which is basically a hamburger with lettuce, tomato and onion. No avocado to my chagrin, so a better name might be California burger Minnesota-style. Even without the avocado, it was rather tasty, piled high with with the LTO. I wasn't a fan of the bun (too dry for me), but the burger was great. The fries were my personal favorite. They had some kind of batter that gave them an extra crisp. I'll be back one day Gordy!

Stopping at Hi Hat is a MUST when you "drive up north"! The burgers, fries, cheese curds, and shakes were yummy!

  • Skyler Q.

Very good burgers and polish sausage. The place may look busy but they move customers through very quickly. The cheese curds and onion rings have a superb batter on them and are not very greasy. Saw Gordy's on Triple D and was in the area. Would definitely recommend and would stop back in the future.

    (5)
  • Jeff B.

To start off, Gordy's has one of the best fast food double cheeseburger and fries you'll ever eat. True greasy spoon. The reason for only three stars is the rock hard hot dog bun and the off the shelf microwavable onion rings. If you're looking for a burger, stop in. Otherwise, skip it.

  • Cassidy D.

My husband and I always stop here on our way up north. The burgers are great, but we keep coming back for the shakes. The blueberry shake is my favorite, but the raspberry shake is pretty good as well. It is usually busy whenever we go, but the service is always fast once you have placed your order.

I went here on the recomendation of a friend, apparently she doesn't like me very much. We showed up and this place was packed, we waited in a disorganized line forever only to have our order taken by Gordy himself which we thought was really fun. A Bacon Swiss Burger, a regular order of fries, a Deluxe burger with no mayo and an Oreo shake. After 20 minutes and a hunt for a table we got our food. The Deluxe Burger without mayo and the Bacon Swiss both came COVERED in mayo (even though the menu says NOTHING about mayo on the Bacon Swiss) the patties reminded me of the ones we had in elementary school, thin and bland. The fries were overcooked and cold. The highlight of the meal was the shake, it was great. Overall I feel like I could have a better experience with better food at a Dairy Queen or a Culver's and leave far more satisfied. There is nothing great about this hat.

Growing up in a small town, you often overlook many gems in your backyard. Heck, one would probably do the same if they lived in a metropolis - just taking things for granted. I can say, though, that I always knew Gordy's was the place to go. Now, after Food Network featured them, everyone else does too! This is one of the places you should at least check out once just to get a feel for a great, family run business that supports a great staff. You should note, however, it is a seasonal restaurant. They are only open during the summers! But Gordy's is one hopping place all summer! It is hard to go wrong with any item on the menu - but you will most often hear people citing the burgers as being the best they've ever had, along with great fries or onion rings. To top it off you need to get one of their famous shakes! I always tend toward getting a strawberry banana shake, and I am always pleased with it. The only problem I've ever had was realizing I didn't get my final shake of the season! That, fortunately, has been remedied because they do have a portion of the business that is now year round - the warming house - located conveniently across the parking lot. There you can get ice cream, shakes, coffee, deserts - it is a regular ol' coffee shop. One of the best places in town you can treat yourself to.

YUMMY! Gordy still works there, I'm not kidding. Old man still working side by side with all these teenage kids and their summer jobs. The burgers were delicious, and very decently priced. Definitely would eat there again! [heart]

Made the detour to Gordy's on a trip to duluth. I ordered a burger, onion rings, and a blackberry shake. Overall it was a good but I think I was expecting more with all of the hype. I will be back to give them another shot as it still beats the hell out of the golden arches.

  • Angela S.

It's worth a stop if it's along your route, but I definitely wouldn't recommend going out of your way for it. It's mostly hype and nostalgia that makes this place so popular. We were there late afternoon and the line was out the door, but it seemed to move fast and wasn't a big issue. The burgers and fries are good, but nothing special. I would not stop here again, but I'm glad I tried it once.

Gordy's is a must-stop if you happen to be passing through Cloquet on your way up north. Awesome fries and deep-fried walleye. The shakes are pretty good, I had one that had actual strawberry bits in it. Crazy. The only downfall of Gordy's I think are their burgers. They are not truly stand-out burgers. I would stick to the fish sandwhich and fries. Here's a super huge compliment: my difficult to please English mother in law loved this place. She thought it was everything she imagined America would be about and she said the "chips were lovely." I personally actually prefer soggy English style "chips" but if Mable gives this place thumbs up, they must truly be "hi hat." A lot of places down in the cities want to be Gordy's, but Gordy's and the Porky's on University Avenue are probably the only true authentic fifties style drive-ins left in the state.

  • Ingrid H.

Pretty generic burger joint, but the food was greasy and good. Stopped here on our way up north. I had the fish sandwich, and we ordered fries and cheese curds to share. The fish sandwich was good, but way too big! I had to remove 2 of the 4 pieces of fried fish before I could eat it. Fries and cheese curds were good, but nothing special. Although, being able to order cheese curds is always a bonus.

Gordy's has been a family fav for as long as I can remember. Everything is GREAT! Burgers, fish sandwich, fries, onion rings, and the yummiest shakes!!! Gordy's is going to be featured on an upcoming episode of Diner's, Drive-in's, and Dives. Filming will take place May 5-20th.

  • Andy B.

Seriously a can't miss burger and shake joint! This place is so tasty, and everything you'd want on a hot summer day. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu!

  • Grace E.

A tad more expensive than the average fast food, but tastes better! And the malts...where to begin. I need to get one delivered to my house every day from now on. Glad we passed up DQ and opted for this (and that's saying a lot...because I LOVE DQ). I also love this outdoor seating...hanging flowers, slight breeze, great malt in my hand. Definitely worth dropping in if you're passing by. :)

Came here after our Boy Scout Boundary Waters trip - 8 Days, 22 Scouts - amazing burgers and shakes. Scout endorsed!

  • Nathan S.

Solid burgers, great onion rings, terrible prices. A place with a very nostalgic feel and look, until you see the price. The prices drop this place to tourist trap status. You can feed two people for the same price and get trully great burgers just a bit further down the road at the anchor bar in superior. Thebse4vice was fast, although very rushed due to the line. One big issue with the soeen 2as the tipping on the burger had not been applied with any care. Even a mcdonald's slammmed with a couple of bus loads of kids will not do this poorly.

Went here because we saw it on The 3 D's, and we were not disappointed. I got a Double Cheeseburger, Cheese Curds, and a large Chocolate Shake. my son, who's a Cheeseburger connoisseur, got 2 Double cheeseburgers, Onion Rings and a soda. My son said it was the BEST cheeseburgers he has ever had, and he really enjoyed the homemade Onion Rings. I'll admit the Cheeseburger was fantastic, and the Cheese Curds were good, but after 4 or 5 of them, you really didn't care if you ate anymore. My Chocolate Shake was nice and thick. The service is super fast, and friendly.

    (5)
  • Lee P.

Oh how I love there cheese burgers and blackberry shakes. We now time our travel so we hit Gordy's around lunch time. The fries are great and a lot of them- the onion rings didn't disappoint either. Always a wait, but worth it. I'll take the cheese burger here over a juicy Lucy any day.

    (4)
  • Bill G.

Best burgers around. They make them by hand! I've eaten their several times and continually go back. A bit pricey, but well worth it! Another reviewer says Culvers is better, but I disagree. They fry everything in butter.. Gordy's is a class 50's burger joint. Fast food places have nothing over them, except cheap prices.

  • Cristy S.

Absolutely delicious!! I live in the cities but my entire family and I come here every time we are at our cabin! You can't go wrong ordering here!!

  • Tanea M.

This diner totally lives up to it's "Diners, Drive ins and Dives" accolades. From the juicy burgers, the thick malts, and large menu, this is the best stop on the way up to the BWCA. You must try the mushroom & Swiss burger, it oozes Swiss, very generous portion. One tip though, order a regular size fry to share for 2-3, family size for 4-6. We have stopped here every year for 5 years and it is always something we look forward to!

  • Christine B.

Stopped here on our way back South from Lake Vermillion. I had no idea this place was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, we just stopped based on some locals recommendation, but that was a bonus. Super long line, but moved pretty quick. Got cheeseburgers, fries, and onion rings, along with some shakes. The cheeseburger was good, liked the fried onions. The onion rings were also good, they had a very crispy shell with a batter that may have had corn meal in it, there was just something unique about it. Strawberry milkshake was great, there were actual strawberries in it.

    (4)
  • Al B.

Service was great. The strawberry shake was very good. The California burger was good but not spectacular. The onion rings were ok, a little disappointed. Better rings at the Stand in Chisholm, mn and better hamburgers at Jim's sports club, also in Chisholm, mn.

    (3)
  • Shelly F.

Not a great experience. While the service was friendly, the food was not all that. Here's the thing- we got weird stuff, a fish sandwich and a taco salad. So stick to the burgers and fries and you'll go away happy.

  • Laura H.

We came here for my son's birthday, were from southern MN. Excellent food and shakes!

  • Kohleen L.

Popped my Gordy's cherry a few weeks ago on our way up to Kabetogama, and it was so great that we went back for more on our way home! I had the chicken sandwich, and although it didn't look like anything special, it was easily the best one I've tasted in years. Also had the fries, which were good--not too greasy. Had an oreo shake that was fantastic as well. I hate to say it, but I almost want to visit the area again just to eat at Gordy's...is that sad? Highly recommend you stop here if you're ANYWHERE near Cloquet. You most certainly won't regret it. And don't be put off by the long line...it moves amazingly quick.

    (5)
  • Nate J.

This is part of our annual pilgrimage to Duluth along with the nearby mini golf course. The raspberry shakes are worth the visit alone! A must visit if you are traveling to the north shore.

  • Laurie P.

I had to add my review after reading some others posted. First, I have never had a 'bad' meal here at Gordy's--even when the lines are long, the orders are taken efficiently and service is prompt. The burgers are really good--they are made daily--hand patted--and to even begin to compare them to a fast food place---you have to be kidding! And the onion rings! Lightly coated, perfectly fried in oil that is hot enough that they aren't greasy--really good. Ignore any of the bad reviews and make sure you stop here on your way north. And like I said, don't be daunted by the full parking lot--you'll get your food in short order!

After hearing about Guy's appearance and a few suggestions from fellow yelppers we decided to have some lunch here on our way to Duluth. I want to start off by saying, from now on, every time I'm in the area i'll be eating here as much as possible, and if you're in the area I HIGHLY recommend!!! This is a very straight forward place, no messin' around! You wait in what seems like a really long line, but before you know it you're placing your order. You then get a number and relax in the 50 styles diner full of flare while you wait. I loved the burger, its my second favorite burger from a restaurant, #1 being the Supreme burger from the Nook. The burger is very large and requires two hands to hold...what else do ya need? Another great attribute this restaurant holds are their malts! We order the oreo cookie malt, it actually tasted like they started with real oreo cookies and cut them up to order then topped the malt with a full cookie... unlike some places that use generic pre-mashed up dried out oreo wannabes. I haven't had such a great burger and malt combination since Nans in NE Mpls. Thanks Gordy!

  • Michelle J.

Seriously not worth the hassle it was ok but insanely busy at 3pm. Onion rings were good the bacon cheese burger was oversalted and forgettable.

    (2)
  • Eric H.

Good food, but a little overpriced for what you recieve. The chicken sandwich is good. Usually very busy, especially on a nice summer evening, but the line tends to move fairly fast. I highly recommend the blueberry shakes!

    (3)
  • Ks K.

Crazy awesome burgers! Always busy, but always great. Parking can be nuts on weekends, it is a roadtrip stop off for everyone going up north or coming back south. We really like it has a field nearby for a break for our pup to stretch his legs. He likes Gordy's burgers too!

    (5)
  • Jessica P.

Not sure how this was Triple D worthy... the onion rings are homemade and good... the rest is just like ever other drive-inn. Everything was good... not blow my socks off good. Don't need to go back to this place.

    (3)
  • Karen S.

The food is fine- burgers, fried stuff, shakes. There's definitely a nostalgia factor, but the food wasn't worth all the hype I heard about. Don't get me wrong - you get a decent burger here, and if you're on your way up north you should stop here over any fast food joint. Service is fast and friendly and you'll have a good meal.

  • Nicole P.

Stopped by on a week day on our way back from camping. Tried the Strawberry Poppy Seed salad which was fresh and excellent. The Onion Rings which had a unique batter more like corn meal on them, it was so-so. The Strawberry Shake was awsome and a reasonable size. Meanwhile my boyfriend exclaimed how good his bacon cheese burger was 3-5 times throught the meal. The place is to be featured on "Diners, Drive-In's and Dives" in the end of July and I can see why. the seating is spacious but i'm sure it gets busy during the weekend, but there is lots of patio space and even some outside the parking lot in the shade. I would make the stop again.

    (4)
  • Ryan J.

Doesn't live up to the hype that surrounds it. Decent food and cool atmosphere, but pricey for a simple drive-in style restaurant. Recommended for people nostalgic of all things from the 50's and large summer crowds.

  • Alison K.

My family had driven by this spot for years on the way to & from our cabin up north but never stopped until this year. A fun place to grab lunch & a good variety of burgers. Had the strawberry salad which was a fresh healthy option, but the blackberry shake made the meal for sure. Great for a quick & delicious meal on the road!

  • Jaime R.

FABULOUS!! I absolutely love Gordy's. Wait all year for it to open. Best fries, burgers, onion rings, cheese curds, and shakes ever.

    (5)
  • Joel V.

Excellent experience! Wonderful staff! Fantastic burger, onion rings, and Strawberry shake! It is likely more nostalgic for locals, but it's still really good! This is not about frills, but straight forward American food. You gotta go for the experience!
