We started with the shrimp appetizer which was soaked in oil. It came with only five small shrimp for $15. Not worth it. We just we had was pleasant but did notattend to our needs as fast as we needed her to. When I asked for spicy sauce, she said they didn't have any. After she said she will check and brought me a salad dressing which was not even close to spicy. After I insisted for a hot sauce and her telling me they don't have one she finally brought out a couple variations of hot sauce. Was she just lazy to get it? I will never know. The fish was pretty good although lobster sauce was very bland and had no taste. It seemed to lack spices. Their bread and butter is pretty good so make sure you try that. Not impressed with this restaurant , it had that cafeteria feeling. The ambience was not cozy and I won't be back.

Going in, all I heard was negativity about one thing or the another: generally this would be enough to steer me away. However we followed through and dined for a Friday lunch with the comrades. My three star ratings is broken down below; 1.) Food rating = OKAY. Nothing particular to complain about, but the taste and presentation were subpar. 2.) Ambiance = OKAY. Louisiana feel, with a comfortable family environment. 3.) Service was EXCELLENT. Corey, our waiter, was quick and responsive. Extras: Napkins smelled very unpleasant: much like rotten milk.

My husband is a native of Detroit and grew up on this place. When I walked in and saw the outdated decor and only a handful of people eating dinner there on a Friday evening, I was ready to turn around and leave. We ended up staying because we both were starving and I didn't want to judge a book by it's cover. Our waitress was very friendly and was helpful in making suggestions when I couldn't decide what to order. I ended up ordering seafood gumbo and crawfish étouffée. While ordering I'd made a comment about getting a salad too but decided against it because it would be too much food. I was surprised when the waitress came back with the delicious bread and garlic butter and had a small side salad (on the house). The gumbo was tasty. My crawfish étouffée had the makings of being a good dish but it lacked seasoning. The hurricane cocktail I ordered was amazing! Pretty sure I couldn't have had a second one, because that Bacardi 151 floater was serious. All in all the service was wonderful and our witty waitress kept us entertained. The food was pretty good. If they'd update the decor and fine tune the menu, I'm sure it would be so much better and would draw more people to this location.

So my friend and I went to the Southfield location. Beautiful restaurant. Went to the bar,NOPE rude bartender.. . Ordered food and half came out cold.. Ok tried to explain to the bartender and got total attitude ... Then was told they would not give out to go box.. Needless to say I will Never Go Back ....... RUDE BEYOND RUDE.

A group of co workers went last night hoping for a good dinner. We were disappointed, mahi was overcooked, crawfish had no taste and crab cakes were better at Costco. Avoid this place. Server had a hard time taking the order because she forgot her glasses, hard of hearing. And she smelled of smoke. Many other restaurants in the area that are much better.

As a part of retired professional African-American women, who celebrate each other's birthday monthly, we went to this restaurant Saturday. After receiving a glass of water from the restaurant staff, one of the senior's proceeded to pour a pack of Crystal Light into her glass of water. The restaurant staff (waitress & manager) told her she could not bring "outside drinks" into the restaurant and demanded the drink. The very shocked lady, who refused to give the manager her drink, was threaten by the manager, stating she would call the police and have this 73 year old woman arrested. When asked where is it stated on the menu or anywhere else in the restaurant that one could not add to the water provided by the restaurant, the manager stated it was posted on the entrance door (really??? who reads the many signs and icons posted OUTSIDE restaurant NEAR the entrance area?) If adding Crystal Light to a glass of water (provided by the restaurant) is that serious, and may lead to an arrest, I would think this information would be a part of the menu, not on a piece of paper nested between others signs and icons for patrons to view before entering the restaurant. The rating for this restaurant should be 0 stars

Awful! To say the least. On Saturday nights it turns into a "club" w/a cover charge The menu is very limited Paper and plastic products are used instead of silverware and stemware~ The wait staff is very unprofessional We were asked if we wanted to order som STUFF! I will never go back!

Went to this restaurant with a larger group. The services was average. I had the salmon Rosette which was really good. We ordered the appetizer sampler which is a large tray of fries apps like alligator, catfish, mushrooms, onions, hot wings. It was good and served with three dips, ketchup and ranch dressing were two of the dips. The place is large but it was almost empty. We did wait for water to be refilled and for drinks from the bar. The decor was fun but we were in a private room that was very plain.

Great service! Very friendly atmosphere with expensive plates but ones that filled you up! The food is warm and great to eat if you are done with work, out with friends, or just grabbing a bite on a weekend afternoon. The waiters are attentive and they answered all my requests. Lots of choices from Cajun to American to Sushi. Please go!

Definitely do not go here for lunch during the work week if you are on a time crunch. Also, don't order the lunch burger and ask for medium. They will burn it so it's not edible and charge you regular price when it's on their lunch menu!! Over priced, slow service and not worth your time! Go elsewhere!

Fishbones in Southfield is an incredible restraunt. The place offers a huge variety of food and drinks. They have top notch sushi with one of the best sushi chefs in Oakland County. They have amazing Creole (Louisiana) style food, as well as great American style food as well. The bartenders are real knowledgelable and can make any drink with no hesitation. It's a fantastic place to book a private party because the place is gigantic with lots of parking. Ask for Lori or Jeff if you want to book anything they are super helpful and respectful managers.

This place is horrible. It use to be nice and we would eat here all the time. Husband and I went here this past weekend for dinner, service was horrible, waiter did not bring our drinks after we told him a several of time. Food was blah. I order sea and land. Which comes with steak and lobster- it was just horrible- the steak was over cooked. My husband has the pasta which was very dry and plain. We both did not finish our meal when we usually do. We didn't get any refill on our drinks. The place is dirty and dead. I felt as if I was eating in jail. Never again, this place can't compare to the one in St Clair Shore.

Spoiler Alert : DO NOT GO SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!! Sunday night birthday dinner party of maybe 15-20 people. Restaurant was almost empty servers were "nice" but mediocre at best. grautity was 18%. Think you could aleast smile a bit more. Food took to long to come and wasn't worth the price we paid for it. With an almost empty restaurant. Waitress and management refuse to split up bill for no reason. Come on dude how hard is it. Downtown location is where to go forget this spot its only convient if you live in the suburbs and don't want to go to the "hood" lol. I will never return to this location 'only' if I got a groupon for 50% off other than that not worth it keep your money to many places with quality service and sufficient workers to waste your hard earned money here I mean that..

Food was fresh but wasnt the best. Service was the best I've had ever.

  • Maggie B.

Service is awful! We came with a large group. The waitress tried to say that everyone hadn't turned in their money for the bill. When we demanded to see the manager the money miraculously appeared when she recounted the wad of cash in her pocket. The menu is too large. It's become an issue of quantity over quality. During another visit, I ordered a drink called a rainbow. The waiter brought out a drink that looked like mud. When I called him on it he insisted that this is how the drink is made. Having had the drink before I knew he was lying. Plus, anyone could tell from the description of the drink that it was incorrectly made. Crappy food. Crappy drinks. Crappy service. Crappy restaurant.

I ate here a few weeks ago, with 3 other couples. When we arrived the restaurant was 80% empty...but the hostess insisted on having us wait for about 10 min while she "looked" for a table (although we had reservations). Once seated, I ordered the Mussels as an appetizer and the Snapper Beausoleil for my entree. Both were pretty good! Not the best Cajun that I've had....but not bad! One of our friends got the Bayou Caviar for an appetizer, which I highly recommend. Service also was not too bad, we received our meals pretty quickly, considering we had a table for eight.

  • Bradley S.

Only ate once at this location and will not return. Should have known not to try a restaurant where there are only 2 or 3 other tables occupied. Service was lackluster and sloppy. Bread rolls not fresh, had the feel and texture of twice heated bread. Half slab ribs with BBQ sauce tasted chemically. Wine glass and silverware were dirty. Overall just very very average and disappointning.

Vile nastiness. So how does a Cajun place end up with Sushi? C'mon... at least master the other parts before you hop into this space. Was in there earlier this week for a business lunch suggested by a customer. He said it was a great place, quick and cheap. I had the crawfish etouffe, which should be something a cajun place should be able to pull off in it's sleep. The stuff was like a nasty glue with sporadic pieces of crawfish mixed in. Not even going to try anything else on the menu. It was THAT bad.

I'm really not sure how I feel about this place. I've been here twice. The first time was an OK experience overall. A few weeks ago, I planned a dinner with 7 friends & 3 kids. I was unable to find a restaurant that would be willing to split the bill. A friend wanted to come here for the sushi, so I made the reservation. When 3 of my friends arrived, they wouldn't seat them until the rest of us showed up. I understand that if there were any no-shows, they could adjust the table setting but this place was DEAD. I was happy that they set us up at a round table which made it easy for everyone to talk to each other. Our server (I think his name is Mikel), was really nice & attentive. Unfortunately, they did not have sushi, so my friend was a little bummed. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. I ordered the Fish & Chips, which were pretty good. The breading was crunchy & thick pieces of fish. The tartar sauce was a nice compliment for it & had good flavor. The fries were pretty average. I was pleasantly surprised when our server offered to split the bills for us. He also didn't add the 18% gratuity that I was told would be added when I placed the reservation. I wouldn't mind that at all, but servers usually make out better without it (I hope!). I was shocked when I saw the price of my Fish & Chips! I didn't see it on the menu & decided to order it after hearing a couple of friends order it. It was $15! Yikes! I won't make that mistake again! Overall, it was fine. It worked for everyone, service and food was also good (although outrageously expensive). We all thought it was really weird that this place was absolutely dead for a Saturday night.

I WILL NEVER GO TO THE FISHBONES IN SOUTHFIELD MICHIGAN EVER AGAIN. Today my mother, a senior of 72 years of age went to the restaurant with a group of her peers to celebrate a friends birthday. She asked for a glass of water, a simple glass of water and then proceeded to pour a small individual packet of Crystal Light (she's a diabetic) into the glass of water she was given. The server and the manager on duty informed her that there is a "no outside beverages" policy and that she (as in the server) would have to take the glass from her for violating the policy. When my mother refused to give her the glass back (mind you it was a glass she received from the restaurant) they threatened to CALL THE POLICE on my elderly mother!!! What an incredible response. I can hardly believe that the Southfield police would come in response to such a ridiculous complaint! Unbelievable! She and her group of senior 10 women get together once a month for lunch and to celebrate and this is the treatment they get! Their bill is often in excess of $150! They made the decision to leave and go to another restaurant and never to return again and NEITHER SHOULD I AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU!!!!

My brother loves this place. Why I can't even phantom. Especially since his mother hails from Louisiana and he's had the real deal! I cook a pretty mean gumbo as well being "Nawlens" taught, sooo that being said I know good from bad. And this food is bad on so many levels. The etouffe, which means "smothered", is heavy and congealed or thin and watery. The Pasta Orleans..enh! Edible...just. Most times overpowered by the sauce. The only thing I get nowadays is the mussels and the bread. I have to agree with some of the reviewers here. I've been to the Big Easy and nowhere on the menu did I see sushi. When I first visited the Downtown location when they just opened, I wasn't that impressed then (but I was biased) and even less now. I did, however enjoy the bread pudding which at that time was excellent but now is not the same--and it was also a fun place to go. And the servers (Downtown Detroit) were fantastic back then. I think if you are going to tout yourself off as an authentic Cajun cookery, then maybe you should learn first what Cajun food is and second, how to cook it. The service now???...HA! My experience at this location (Southfield) and the one downtown it that they just don't care. Fishbone's management needs to read these reviews and get it together!

Just went tonight with my husband, son, daughter in law (their pick) and our daughter and son in law. Had one of the best dinners I have ever had. We all loved the food, atmosphere, and waiter. Will definitely go again. Loved everything.

I was interested in holding an event here so went in to try some of the Cajun/Creole specialties. I could not have been more disappointed. I am originally from Louisiana and grew up eating authentic Cajun/Creole. This food has no resemblance. It's much closer to Italian food, at least the jambalaya, gumbo, and etouffee are, with an extreme overuse of tomato sauce/paste and inclusion of large sauteed vegetables. We had a few bites of each and left. Fishbone's was quickly eliminated from our list of potential vendors. To the restaurant: This style of food is not that difficult to cook. Your kitchen seems to lack some pretty basic culinary skills e.g., finely chopping vegetables for etouffee. You should consider a revamp of your menu/recipes if you're going to brand the restaurant as authentic. Any New Orleans cookbook e.g., Mulate's would be extremely beneficial.

Our lunch was disappointing. We had the the Ya Ya Gumbo, Fish and Chips, and Shrimp Po Boy. The gumbo appeared to be from a can and had cut up chicken breast in it (i.e. not cooked with the soup). The Fish and Chips and Shrimp tasted like food service food, The rolls were from a bag and served with whipped margarine, not butter. While everything tasted OK, it was no better than we could have gotten at a Chili's or TGIF. Both those options are fine, but we expected something fresh, not frozen, canned or from a bag, and overpriced for what was served. The dead giveaway was that at noon, the restaurant was nearly empty.

I come here...for the jambalaya. I always come here...for the jambalaya. And the jambalaya...is always awesomely good. Nice spice profile, yummy shrimp, spicy sausage, good sauce. I am always happy...because I come here...for the jambalaya. I've had the alligator voodoo from time to time...but it's all about the jambalaya. Now, I make that point repeatedly because I'm seeing the number of reviews ripping this place over the sushi, and I have to ask a simple question: "Really?" As in "You're going to a place that's based on good ol' n'awlins food...and you're ordering...sushi? Really?!" Will your next trip be to Slows Barbecue to write a scathing review of their veggie burger?! Will you be firing off a blistering 1-star about a microbrewery because their pale ale didn't mesh up well with your Bud Light palate? Please. Just because it's on the menu doesn't mean you should be ordering it, people. Or at a minimum, you should adjust your expectations accordingly. Let's say you're at a Big Boy...and hey! They have a steak on the menu! I like steak! Let's order the steak! Do you have the same expectations in your mind when you order that steak as you do when you're at, say, an Outback Steakhouse or a Mister Paul's Chop House? Because if you do...you're the problem, not the menu. And yes, I gave an extra star just to balance you people out a bit. Neener-neener.

Customer service was good and food for take out was prepared fairly quickly. My only issue is the price versus quantity. $6 for 5 stalks of asparagus. ....im so disappointed. The bowl of seafood gumbo was decent and enjoyable. The menu you was 70% fried foods.....not much for this health conscious foodie.

I haven't been to fishbone's in quite some time. This trip was unplanned and close to closing time. I received some of the best service I've had in a while. Not only did they accommodate a party of 10 right before closing but they got the orders correct and the food wasn't bad at all. I'm impressed.

The food was decent, not great, but pricey. The service provided by our server, Sheek, was excellent! Our family came here to celebrate the baptism of our two teenaged girls on Sunday afternoon immediately following the ceremony. There were 11 in our party, 4 of which were teenaged girls and the others ranged from ages 40-80). We ordered from the menu and as we waited we did as most good families do: we shared stories, chatted and laughed a lot. Then out of nowhere, the manager, strolled to our table and told us to "keep it down" as patrons complained that we were too loud. First of all, we were NOT disorderly in any way: no swearing, no roudiness, no demonstration of poor behavior on any level. Secondly, the restaurant was nearly EMPTY with less than 5% of the tables being occupied. After the shocking effect of the manager's approach, I located the manager. I told him privately that we were highly offended and that his approach was unacceptable, as it was unwarranted, not in good taste or good management. He apologized but did not offer any form of restitution in an effort to make his wrong right. He was encouraged to think about the consequences of his actions going forward. If our food orders had not been taken, we would have paid for what we had at that point and left. The manager's behavior dampened our dining experience and afterwards we all agreed that we would not come back to this establishment -- or at least not to this location!

The food was OK. Service was excellent. I had the scallops and although tasty was a bit oily go me.

  • Alissa H.

We've gone back twice and had the same server both times (Mark, maybe? I can't remember off the top of my head) and it was a completely different experience except for the dirty martini being fruity again. The waiter's reaction suggested that this was a common occurrence, but it was remedied quickly. And, the food was much better! The snapper was decent, but the orange roughy was fantastic. The hellfire saganaki was really flavorful and fancy, but some bread with it probably would have made it a little better than just eating a lot of plain, spicy cheese. And, we did give the Detroit location a chance in between the two other visits to the Southfield location. In our opinion, the Southfield location, while sometimes lacking in service, has significantly better food. As long as we get seated in the right section, I'm sure we'll return again and again.

    (4)
  • Sharla F.

I was so disappointed in my visit to the Southfield location. I'm such a fan of the Downtown location I thought I'd give this one a try...NEVER AGAIN. Our cups were dirty. Sauce dripped down the side of one. The alligator voodoo tasted freezer burned, cooked and reheated. My rice was the temperature of my ice water. The food preparation was just unsatisfactory to say the least. By the time I received my entree all I could do is look at it. So from now on anytime I want Fishbones I'll be on Monroe st.

Me and my boyfriend decided to eat here on his birthday weekend. He wanted "Real Food" and the wait for Beans and Cornbread was just too long. We decided to eat here, for the 1st time, and received a table right away on a Saturday Evening. The waiter was ok, he didn't seem to check on us very much. He came to take drink and dinner orders and to give us the check. I ordered a ceaser salad which didn't taste very "ceasery" at all but like someone dropped a bottle of mayo in the dressing. I took one bite and couldn't bear to take another. My boyfriend ordered the Seafood Pasta Orelans and it came to the table looking like someone threw it up. I was way to saucy and just looked unappetizing although he said it tasted ok. I ordered the Lobster Po Boy which was pretty good.

  • Royale M.

This place was really nice. It wasn't very noisy or loud. I tried to get a table away from the super large flat screen at the table, but my date was still able to get a view. The patio was open but it was too cool outside for me. As for dinner, we had the alligator bites, I had a cup of seafood gumbo, salmon and veggies and I had the crawfish etoufe. All of our food was delicious. I also liked the butter that comes with the bread. There was some kind of herb/spice in it that made it unique. I also had a rum/tropical (i forget the name) drink. It was delicious as well. The only down point I had about the evening was our service. Our waiter seemed friendly enough, but he was kind of slow. I had some spicy food but we waited too long to have our water glasses refilled.

Definitely had some stomach issues after eating sushi here... not sure why I thought it was a good idea to eat sushi in Detroit though, my bad! From this experience (one of my first meals in Detroit), for the two weeks I was in Southfield after this meal, I pretty much just stuck with McDonald's :(

I go there for lunch frequently.. great fish tacos, great and friendly service. Right out of the oven bread every time I've been and they have real butter that actually has flavor. Don't listen to all the wanna-be critics.

This is my first yelp review. I feel the need to do this. Fishbone's was unbelievably horrific in so many ways. All they had to do is stop by and say, 'how is your food tonight, sir?' Well, they didn't, so they would earn ZERO stars if I could give that. I ordered the perch, and having seen it served at the store in St. Clair Shores, I was excited to get at the platter of fish. It came to me so utterly overcooked that I left about 50% of what was SUPPOSED to be perch on the plate. SO overcooked that only the batter was left, with nothing that resembled fish inside. And the color suggested that not only was it overcooked, but the oil they fried it in was about ready to be changed over YESTERDAY. I have a sick infant and a tired wife at home, so I was dining alone and with NO time to send it back and wait for new food. $23 for this meal. Had a manager walked by and indicated even a slight amount of interest in my dining experience (or one of the inattentive bar servers), I would have given my frank opinion and invited him to adjust my bill. Again, nobody cared. The other locations are great. But it is what it is. Look where it's located, and you'll understand how this could happen. Sadly, I have to say that. It's pretty clear that the managerial staff is not in touch with modern technology. Not a single response from the restaurant to the miserable reviews I've seen posted before mine.

  • Iffat B.

The Good: The bread with the garlic butter was super yummy and the take-out service was very good. The Mediocre: The Crawfish Etouffee. It was ok..nothing like the stuff you find in New Orleans. The Bad: They don't have sushi at this location. I had heard so much about Fishbones and wanted to try it before I left Detroit. I'm glad I did, but would never go back.

I like Fishbone's downtown and in Saint Clair Shores. However, this location doesn't measure up. The service was poor, food was cold and not up to Fishbone's standards.

This place sucks really sucks. Do not come here. Do not come here. Do not come here. Do not come here period. Do not come here. Do not come here. Do not come here. The manager was very rude. Very rude. They tried to feed me ebi shrimp that I was not going to eat cause it looked sickly and refused to take it off the bill for real? For really really real? So you want me to pay for this nasty gonna make me sick ebi?! Are you serious? It smells rotten! Like garbage rotten. Imma take a picture of It and show it to you. This thing was like. Manager Jeff Newton, you are a bad manager. Really bad manager. Really bad. If I can give no stars I would. I see why the reviews are horrible. Oh my goodness I have never been so pissed off.

All sell are final... this is your buyers beware warring...So if you get the Bar-B-Que shrimp and expect Bar-B-Que sauce... don't complain...just eat it ;( when I explained to the waitress that I didn't want it because I thought it was Bar-B-Queed (not in garlic gravy). She sent LORI the manger over. LORI'S customer service skills were horrible. She was very abrupt and dismissive about our experience. She then try to show me how to read...Wow; saying I should have read the description NOT the title. Then LORI told me she could put BBQ sauce on the shrimp. (that already had gravy on them) ok maybe I could have done a better job of reading description; but her approach lacked so much of the skills required to Be in her position. We would have been fine if the MANGER (((LORI )) wasn't so horrible to us even if we still had to pay for the gravy shrimp...which we did pay for and my meal that we also didn't eat. We left a great tip for our waitress paid for the food and left.;(

Food Is ho humm, Fish is NOT Fresh when you can smell it when it's coming to your table; Ambiance is Great but the service sucks socks. Better to go to the location in Greektown for better service and a more enjoyable time. the waitstaff could care less that you're there.

This is a suburban location to the popular downtown Fishbones. To be honest - I like fresh seafood a lot but half of the stuff at this restaurant is just batter dipped and deep-fried in the same way. It's to the point where a ton of their stuff tastes the same. It's a fun/cool place to eat and the menu is diverse with plenty of stuff from the sea - but it's lacking a freshness that most seafood lovers crave. I understand that cajun/creole involves a lot of deep frying - but the they should take a fresher approach to some of their dishes and offer more to the general seafood fiend as well. This is a modiocre place all in all. It's worth a shot if you've never had - and you may feel differently than me! The alligator voodoo (though it just tastes like fried pork skins the way they prepare it) is probably one of the few chances to get your chance on some gator meat in metro Detroit.

  • Cherice J.

To be honest, I like this Fishbone way better than I like the one in downtown Detroit. I'm more of a person that doesn't like crowds, and out here in the suburbs is the ideal place. Plus they have outdoor seating! The vibe is more artsy and cozy, and the service I think is much better. Of course, if you read any of my reviews you will know I am not a seafood lover so I can't give valid opinions on what Fishbone's is known for. However, the chicken and steak meals are fairly decent. They also have nice desserts, such as bread pudding and key lime pie to end the evening off right.

    (3)
  • Melissa H.

Small and out of the way restaurant but a mere shadow of the downtown Detroit sister. It felt like a store front but the if you can't make it downtown and need to be a Fishbone fix, it will do.

I've never written a restaurant review before, but the food here was so awful that I felt compelled to mention it. I guess the sushi here is a new thing, and it was terrible. Drizzled with a syrupy, sugary brown glaze. I couldn't even eat it. And the fried perch was coated in an incredibly thick, tough layer of batter that tasted of old, stale oil. I literally couldn't even taste the perch. In hindsight, the kids did like their fish and chips (albeit bland), and the seafood chowder was decent. But the overall experience was definitely not a good one.

    (1)
  • Marc F.

They offer good food, which is pretty much how I remember it from when I've been in New Orleans. The jambalaya is the best I've had in the Detroit metro area. The rolls are fresh and hot, with a nice crust. My only concern is the service; there have been several times where I've had a waiter or waitress that just doesn't care. Too bad. That costs them a star.

The food ranged from mediocre to terrible. Mediocre: bread with garlic butter and greek salad. Bad: mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables (tasted frozen). Terrible: snapper beausoleil (overcooked, un-fresh-tasting fish; rubbery scallops and shrimp; nasty brown sauce with what I believe to be canned mushrooms).

Clean, amazing, sushi is fantastic!!!! I never have a bad meal here. Very professional staff! Each time I am in town I entertain customers here. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is fun! I highly recommend visiting........ it's definitely worth the trip!

I don't know why this place has such a bad wrap. It is not as good as the one downtown, but I just had a fine meal there with my family. The jambalaya is always good and my son loved his popcorn shrimp. I found the wait staff very attentive. I have never had the sushi here, and would suggest somewhere else for that as there are some very good sushi restaurants in the area.

Suburb branch to the famous Cajun restaurant in Detroit. Yes, it's famous, but I find it over rated. Food really isn't that great, but it has a fun and cool atmosphere to cover for their shortcomings. Service is usually pretty good.

The atmosphere at this location isn't as nice as the Detroit location. I still like the food though. It's definitely not as good as what you'd find in New Orleans, but I mean it's in the midwest, what do you expect? Never had the sushi here and I was surprise to learn they'd added it to their cajun-creole menu--why would someone come here for sushi? I also think it's a tad overpriced for this region.

This is definitely my least favorite Fishbones location, but it is still alright. The service was good, the restaurant was clean, and the food was decent. I had the catfish po' boy and was a little disappointed with it. It wasn't bad, just kinda blah. I'll go back again, but given the choice I'd hit the St. Clair Shores or Detroit Fishbones every time.

I've never written a review on yelp but I felt compelled to earn people about this place. It sucks. Plates are about 15-25 bucks and the food is mediocre AT BEST. Someone posted saying the jambalaya was good, yeah... I ordered that and it wasn't good at all. I could make better jambalaya. I went for a work thing so thankfully I didn't pay for this. Service was pretty terrible, the server completely forgot like 3 orders and never came back to refill drinks. The only thing I really like we're the alligator voodoo appetizers, other than that I was very disappointed. Don't waste your money.

Service with a... what service? Hello? I'm having my hands! Do you see me? How about if I stand on this chair, what about now? Did you miss the seven other members of my team standing here beside me? Maybe the line for a party of eight I reserved and confirmed an hour ago? Wait, don't go back into the kitchen where you'll never be heard from again for 20 minutes... Fishbone's downtown location may earn kudos, but the Southfield location is the poor, unmotivated younger brother or sister riding on the coat-tails and name of an ambitious sibling/parent. As one of the midscale restaurants near work, we occasionally spring for a group luncheon here or I end up mistakenly wandering in hoping for spicy pasta and decent service. Every single time I am disappointed. That crowds appear at lunch time should not be a great shock for anyone raised in the past 2300 years, but Fishbone's seems genuinely unprepared for more than two people to appear in their foyer at any given moment. The restaurant could be empty and staff outnumbering guests three to one, and still the host(ess) fails to come up and seat someone. I've been that third person in a restaurant mid-afternoon on a late lunch, waiting in plain sight for someone to guide me to a table. Inch towards an open booth or snatch a menu, though, and see if a wooden spoon isn't flying towards your hands! I'll illustrate the typical Fishbone's experience: A Christmas lunch party with reservation proved the utmost low point for Fishbones. Eight coworkers waited in a half-empty restaurant at lunch for 30 minutes, along with multiple parties from 2 to 7. Two waitresses circulated around, oblivious to the crowd forming in the foyer trying to keep out of the cold. We all exchanged pained looks. We considered seating ourselves in a sparsely populated area near the bar or the multiple open booths. For my coworkers, the big round table would have been perfect. The manager wandered by to inform us the wait would only be a little longer. 15 minutes passed, and a party of three Ladies Who Bit... Lunch came in from the parking lot and got immediately seated at said round table that fit 10. The rest of the hungry diners ought to have mutinied on the spot. When we were finally seated at uncomfortable bar tables and stools, our waitress introduced herself, took our drink orders, and ran out to have a manicure. In Grand Rapids. We looked over the lackluster menu with the vague pangs of hunger experienced by marathon runners, guerrilla soldiers, and crash survivors in the Sahara. We sat down 45 minutes after our reservation (and showing up 5-10 minutes early to make setting up the table easier). Fishbone's serves an eclectic array of seafood, as though it can't make up its mind to be a Cajun restaurant, a southern downhome restaurant, a sushi bar or an American seafood restaurant. Personality conflicts show up on the menu and I seriously doubted the value of the sushi when I didn't see a cleaning rag in sight around the sushi bar, and the chef back there was tooling around without a care. Raw fish is nothing to mess with. If cleanliness doesn't scare you away, the prices for sushi should. Sushi Ko on Orchard Lake is a short drive away, and Whole Foods' sushi case is bound to be fresher and prepared under better circumstances. The rest of the lunch specials barely quantify as specials with high prices. My group ordered jambalaya, pasta, shrimp, salmon, gumbo, and a salad. The salad was the best thing out there. The rest of us picked at our unseasoned food despite asking for medium or hot spices. My jambalaya was scared by a flame and mired in mushy glop resembling concrete mix instead of rice. It tasted like tomato paste. If there were shrimp, they were shriveled by embarrassment. Our manicured waitress returned once to refill our drinks, taking our half-full plates shoved to the end of the bar-counters as a sign we were satisfied and still eating. She then started planning her next vacation while we cooled our heels, flashed napkin semaphore at the manager/other underworked server for our bill, and pondered walking out. We should've walked out. 2.5 hours after our reservation, we got back to work and raided the fridge for yogurt, fruit, and anything else we brought to make up for the deficit. For the money, this restaurant is a terrible deal. Add up one of my coworkers ended up sick to his stomach from the gumbo and it just sealed the deal. For drinks and a lazy afternoon, a vague possibility. There are much better restaurants around. Throw a stone and you'll find one. Go there.

I use to love this place but the prices have certainly changed! I know there is inflation but wow. I still like the gumbo and the shrimp here. It is also a great spot for live music venues also. They also have good cocktail drinks.
