I wanted to review Jose's a little higher but can't. The food is tasty and full of flavor however the prices are high for what you get. I'm used to them serving you chips and salsa when you sit down but they don't. You can purchase them separately if you want. They give you a menu and you go to the counter and place your order. My mom and I ordered the guacamole and chips. They brought the guacamole in one of those black pots but there was only a small amount to go with the small basket of chips. For $5.95 it seemed they should be giving larger servings. I got the Jose's combo which came with an enchilada, taco, rice, beans, and a fountain drink. Very fresh and flavorful. Just the right amount of food for lunch. Everything was A-OK but nothing stuck out that would make me come back here over trying a new restaurant.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. It is the only one to serve FRESH food. You can watch the chef cut the avocado for your guacamole. They fry their own chips. La Ranceria's guacamole tastes like it comes out of a tube. I bet their chips come out of a bag. I love the shrimp fajitas. They taste great! I wouldn't waste my time going anywhere else in town!

Some of the most authentic Mexican food that I have ever tasted! My only complaint is that they have small portions, except for the bean and cheese burrito which is a nice size portion for $3. The barbacoa quesadillas was delicious and at $5 was not that expensive. The chicken enchilada was delicious but was expensive for the size. You pay for the quality. The chips and salsa are not free, they are actually quite expensive. Good food in downtown Petoskey.

Jose's is the best, I love those tiny tacos! Whenever I am in Petoskey, this is always the first place I go. The staff is friendly, the decor is very tasteful, and above all else the tacos are THE BEST! This place is a true Petoskey treasure.

The tacos, as tiny as they are, are pretty good. The problem is the looonnngggg wait when they aren't even busy, and the price for what you get. Plus, they don't provide chips & salsa when you eat in- it's extra and very expensive. This place could easily be 4 stars and packed with customers everyday if they learned how to put a taco together quickly and fixed their pricing. In the mean time, I'll go to El Ranchero for good mexi in Petoskey.

Nice view of the lake before they build a new structure across the street. I had dinner here with my three boys and the food was great. Authentic Mexican food was on the menu, and it was done just right. My boys all had a variety of tacos including pork, and chicken. The tacos came authentic with onion, cilantro, sauce, and meat. The boys all said that they were great. I had the fajitas, and they made them vegetarian for me. The fajitas were very tasty, and I would have them again. Side portions of rice and beans were kind of small, but very tasty. Jose's is seat yourself, and you have to place an order from the counter when you walk in the door. Styrofoam cups, but regular plates makes this a basic authentic Mexican restaurant. Overall this is a great place to eat if you like authentic Mexican food. I will be going back again.

There food is very good far better than any other "Mexican" joints in northern MI. Friendly service and delicious food!

La Senoritas and Taco Bell can't even compare to this real, authentic, family run Mexican restaurant! All the food is on the cheap side (especially for Petoskey!), but it isn't for a lack of flavor, that's for sure. I've had almost everything on the menu and I can't say a word of complaint about any of it, though some (like my mother) find it to be a bit on the spicy side. Unfortunately, the space they occupy is on the small side, but this is made up for because they do takeout.

Jose's is simply fantastic. The food is freshly prepared in a family owned restaurant. The quality is outstanding, as is the flavor. Prices are very low, and the staff is delightful. We enjoy coming here frequently, and highly recommend Jose's as a great place to eat. Very informal, not fancy, but you came here to eat, right? You won't be disappointed. Eat at Jose's!

I went here while on vacation (my gf is from Petoskey). I was surprised at how good it was. I am a little spoiled due to living in California the majority of my life, but the food here is not bad at all. The guacamole is really good.

Awesome authentic Mexican Food. Staff was friendly from the beginning to the end. This was my first visit; I will return when I visit the area.

The wait was long-40 min for our food, kids was served 15 min before ours. The fajitas (veggies) were under cooked and the portion very small for price. Nachos and salsa tasted like what I could buy at a grocery store-they didn't make their own-how can that be authentic? On the other hand-the margarita was very good. The owner asked us how many in out party-twice-we waited 10 min to be seated when there was 3 open tables. They ran out of the "fixings", I overheard another table say. Wouldn't visit again. Over priced-paid $50 for what should have been $30!! Bummer! Gave 2 stars only for the margaritas!

The food was very good, but the service was very bad. They messed up our order...TWICE, AND they brought our dishes out one at a time and just completely forgot two of our dishes all together.

Awesome food, super friendly service. Not a fancy or expensive place--just great, consistent food at a crazy low price. Don't miss the guacamole! Tacos small but YUMMY!

My wife and I drove 20 minutes and were there on Sat Sept 10 at 7:15 PM. We were greeted by their locked door and two employees behind that locked door mouthing "we're closed." It was interesting that we had called two hours before and were told they closed at 8:00 PM. And sure enough the posted operating hours located next to their locked door stated that they closed at 8:00 PM. If you can't believe what you're told, and you can't believe what you read I don't know if we'll give it another try. Would you?

Soooo yummy! If only they had margaritas or coronitas to go with

Fresh, addicting nachos - get the barbacoa meat! Authentic Mex fast food. Tortilla soup is great, too. If you order tacos, you'll need more than 1. Handmade tamales. Often there's something special on the Friday menu. Only wish they had wifi. One of my favorites in Petoskey.

yum. it's pretty much self-serve (with silverware, seating, etc), but if you're there for great food, who cares? they messed up our order two ways, but what we got was delicious so we very promptly forgave them. vegetarian options available.

Food is ok, but pricey for the amount. Sure with that we had a Chevy's here.

Delicious! Food was fresh and fast. The prices were also extremely fair, as was the portion size. I had the fajitas and they were fantastic. Wish they had a little more peppers and onions, but that's only because they were so good! I will be back for sure!

Food was okay. Be prepared to shell out $$$ for an okay meal. Want salsa? $3+. Guacamole was fantastic! The steak torta was good, the tamales not so much. Just too much money for what you get.

Authentic Mexican food, in Petoskey! I have never had a bad meal here. I work in Petoskey, we go here at least once a month. Love the Mexican Pizza, the the little tacos (get at least 3!), and love the Pico de Gallo!

Just finished eating here, and while it does stick to authentic tradition, I found it only okay. I had the chicken tacos, enchilada, and tamale and found everything really dry. Usually the salsa comes to the rescue, but that too was only just okay. Overall, while it's not bad food per se, I wouldn't come back.

Looking for friendly service, a cold drink and some good Mexican food? May want to try another place. I don't think the person taking the orders said two words to us at all. I informed him they were out of ice in the soda machine only to be informed they don't have ice. I don't find warm iced tea all that refreshing. Our burritos came but we didn't have any silverware at the table. We were told silverware was next to the soda machine. They were out. When I informed the help they grabbed some dirty silverware and washed it off in the sink. I'm not sure, but that doesn't sound sanitary to me. Food was just OK. I won't be returning.

I really like this place and nearly gave them 5 stars. It is a mexican restaurant that you order what you want and there is no free chips or table service. My food was really good and it wasn't your standard fare that you seem to find nationwide at all the mexican restaurants (like they are all a chain or something somehow...you know what I mean I hope) I found this place through yelp reviews and I was not disappointed. I only nicked them out of 1 star because they could have been a buck cheaper, but I think I am being picky.

The people are nice and the food is good. Portions are teeny tiny ity bity. It's laughable how thin they spread everything on the plate. Not worth the money.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
