I was raised on this stuff. Delicious!! Other Mexican restaurants pale in comparison. Yum. May the tradition of Emillio continue on......

I have eating at Oye Amigo's and Emilio's for 40+ years so my pilgrimage when I am back in Michigan are as much about nostalgia as the food. I have traveled all over the world and had many excellent Mexican and TexMex meals and I still enjoy the beef enchilada, avacado chalupa and butter soaked tortillas at this downtown Marshall joint. I am not going to claim that the food is true Mexican fare (there are so many varieties) but I always enjoy my visits. The service is always friendly. If you are a fan of Don Pablo's or other chains that shovel chips and salsa at you so you buy more drinks then this may not be for you. Remember to bring cash! Credit/debit cards not accepted.

Not good at all! Food is either very bland or they use a lot of spice to cover the awful taste. Also the mystery beef is questionable...

Whoa. WHOA. One of a kind enchiladas! Cheese and onion with gravy. Cannot go wrong. Food has always been excellent. Has always been worth the drive from MD.

My family has been eating this food since before I was born at it was Emilio's. If you're walking in expecting Taco Bell or chain Mexican crap, you're definitely not going to be happy. And that's ok, go somewhere else. This place is always full for good reason. It's delicious. While most of the family has moved out of state over the past decade, EVERY trip back requires a family dinner at Oye Amigos. Every. Single. Trip. The beans and tortillas can not be beat. A little green sauce on there and you'll be dreaming about it for days. The service is always spectacular and friendly!

Simply great! If you don't like it it is because you don't understand true Mexican food. No canned beans, no red Spanish rice, no simple beef mixture. Oye has the best beans I have ever eaten. They are creamy and perfectly seasoned add cheese and you will have the best bean taco ever. Try the rice! It's spicy. Add their gravy to everything it is also spicy and rich. Love the enchiladas especially the cheese! Mexican pizza is amazing! I love this homey place. Great local flavor!

Anomalous- deviating from what is normal or expected. This establishment is truly one of a kind. I have had Mexican cuisine in many forms, but they have something I have not experienced outside of Oye Amigos. Do not come here with expectations founded upon what you've had anywhere else. There is a reason people stop at Oye's when visiting the area. The food is superb. My recommendation for newcomers would be either an enchilada or a chalupa. Gravy is essential. Do not be afraid to ask the server for a sampler. I'm already planning out my next visit.

Good service, good authentic Mexican food..this is not American Mexican..it's Mexican! I always ask for extra buttery tortillas! It's so much better then the El Cerritos in Hillsdale it's not funny..

If there were an option for 1-1/2 stars, I would have chosen that; since there isn't I rounded up. The service was generally friendly and good. The decor was plain but acceptable - like the local greasy spoon as another reviewer noted. Nothing here to turn me away. The friendliness of the staff would have likely kept me coming back. Then I tried the food. My wife and I stopped here after one of our monthly trips to Marshall. I found the dinner prices high, the a-la carte prices were a bit more appropriate. The lack of chips isn't a big deal for me as they serve buttered toritllas instead. I wish they had asked if we wanted butter - I would have rathered them without. I had the enchiladas; my wife had the burrito. We both were disappointed. The burrito was very bland according to her. The Enchilidas would have been acceptable accept that one bite was bland and the next was too spicy. Also the bean Enchilada was covered in refried beans and sauce. Anyway, lots of room for improvement here. El Cerrito in Hillsdale is much better, and closer to home anyway.

Revolting food with a smile: beginning with a free plate of dark, unpleasant samples of their fare, this economical and cheery but creepily unlit dining room serves neither good nor Mexican food. Tamales are tiny and deformed like wrinkly fingers; spicy gravy an unearthly sludge; no safe haven even in the tortillas, which drip with a buttery oil. The staff are delightful.

The sample plate was perfect! It helped make the right decision. Decor is OK. Service was fast and very friendly. A hidden gem.

Meh. Good, but not great. Their gravy sauce was definitely interesting. Actually it was was a very good flavor, but not what I was expecting. Looking for Mexican food in Marshall, sure come here. Willing to drive a little, maybe try Albion or Battle Creek.

I was in Marshall, MI for 10 days for work. My coworker and I decided to skip chow hall food one day and be adventurous by going into town to check out what mexican food would be like in a small town. What a BIG mistake that was. The place took only cash so between the two of us we had $12. I ordered a beef taco (around $4) and he ordered a beef burrito (around $5). The food came out topped with lettuce and cheese and it looked good until the first bite. I was like "uh oh". My gag reflex kicked in but I forced myself to swallow. The beef tasted like they poured a whole big bottle of liquid smoke or something into the mix. The beef mix didn't even looked normal and it was in some sort of green saucy concoction. I couldn't take a second bite and my coworker ate as much as he could then we paid and left. We drove to a nearby Arby's and washed the funky taste down with Arby's sauce. Besides from the funky beef, the waiter was very nice and friendly. He even offered a small sample of their food for us to try. Unfortunately, we didn't try the beef. The resaturant has loyal constumers who have been dining there for over 20 years saying that they have some of the best enchiladas. Next time I'm in the mood for mexican food in Marshall, I'll visit taco bell instead.

The previous reviews must go in the pantheon of yelp reviews for accuracy and helpfulness. Dear Jesus, if only I had read them before subjecting my daughter and myself to the worst Mexican food I have ever had in my life. My daughter said, "the spiciest thing in the whole restaurant were the decorations." this was meant as a joke in reference to the hanging dried peppers. I can wholeheartedly concur with all of the previous reviews. I will however add the following. You know there is something wrong when the waitress starts by asking, "have you eaten here before? You know they mix the beef with mashed potatoes?" Secondly, I think a cheese enchilada is pretty hard to screw up. Beyond putting cheese in a tortilla the only requirement is to melt it! Apparently that was too difficult. A nice shrine to the previous owner is on the wall in prominent display. Apparently, he took all his recipes to the grave. They did provide chips only because I ordered the nachos (WHAT? Wo gets a side of chips with nachos?) but the only salsa that came with it was a bland V8 juice with giant chunks of onions and peppers that they did not bother to chop up. They also provided what looked to be a specimen jar with green chiles in it, but I wasn't going near that thing. Terrible lighting and some of the worst prices I have ever seen in a little place like that. $11 dollars for nachos is way too much. Thank God I didn't take the butter that came with the flour tortillas on the side. As the other reviewer mentioned, they drown it in butter to the point where it looks like a strange set of flapjacks at the Waffle House. The waitress was nice. Yelp! Needs to change its policy so that I can give this place a negative star rating since they owe me my time and money back.

Don't do it. Beef doesn't taste like meat, no chips, and they have gravy instead of salsa.

I grew up in Chula Vista CA, south of San Diego. We could see Tijuana from our front yard. I've been eating Mexican food since 1960 in the U.S. and in Mexico and am familiar with several of the regional variations. This may be a regional variant of Mexican cuisine but not a good one. I stopped for lunch and it was awful. Everything tasted as though the cook overdid it with cumin or something like that. First of all, no chips and salsa. Really? I had a combo plate with a cheese and onion enchilada, a beef taco, beans and rice. The rice was inedible. The enchilada was just a flour tortilla with grated cheese, not even partly melted, and a few random pieces of onion. Everything had a thick cover of grated cheddar along with a generous coating of lettuce. By the time I found the taco under all the other stuff, the taco shell was falling apart and had to be eaten with a fork. And the beef! The seasoning was off and it tasted bad. It was nice to get warm tortillas but they were smothered in way too much butter. They were greasy. To add insult to injury, this mess cost $11. That's a little too pricey for what you get. Service was OK but nothing to brag about. The decor sucks. Old, tired beige wallpaper, dark wood "paneling" that was scratched and worn, a few Mexican knick-knacks here and there, generic tables and chairs and a sad carpet. It would take about 20 minutes to get everything Mexican out of the place at which point it would look like any standard greasy spoon diner. Part of the whole thing in going to a Mexican restaurant is for the atmosphere, the color. And, yes, I realize this is a little hole in the wall but I've been to dozens of little hole in the wall Mexican places in California, Mexico, Colorado, Michigan, Utah and so on. They were all superior to this joint. While Los Tequilas in Coldwater may not be the epitome of Mexican cuisine, the food is good, as is the service, and the prices are far more reasonable. You can get a similar combo with meat in the enchilada for $7-$8. Anyone who thinks this is "real" Mexican food has never had real Mexican food.

Too bad the above reviewer must have caught them on a bad day. They do have very good, authentic mexican food. It is NOT a fancy place...truly just a hole in the wall, but u can't beat the price for the amount of food u get. I have it on good authority that area Battle Creek firefighters come all the way to Marshall for their Mexican food! Took my bf, dad, and friend here and everyone liked it...and as mentioned, they will let u sample things (which is awesome.)

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
