As simple as it is, a cheesesteak is pretty easy to mess up. That's why I keep a list of places that don't know what they are doing when it comes to this meaty stick of culinary dy-no-mite. In short, if you screw it up, I won't forget, and I will never EVER forgive you. I am pleased to report that the kind people at Lefty's got it right. The meat is perfect, melt-in-your-mouth ribeye, sliced thin and cooked with the right amount of onion and topped with the perfect melty cheese. This place would fit right in on DDD, especially in the latter category. It is a tiny place with a very small menu... basically some add-ons, coneys, burgers and sides. Be careful not to miss it as you drive by. The place is right on the southwest corner of Six Mile and Middlebelt. Pass it, and you will have missed out on one of the better things in life, served up by people who are Pleasantville-nice and incredibly passionate about their namesake item. On another note, thank God this place isn't called "Fisty's." Closed on Sundays.

Best Cheese steak I have had in awhile. Almost turned around eating it in the car to buy another it was that good. If I had been car jacked while eating this I would have just blown the guy off and finished eating my hoagie before giving away my car. Spring for the cherry peppers add on. The sweet hot pickled goodness they add is just perfect. Had two versions of the corn beef sandwiches that I was a little less enthusiastic about. The corn beef while juicy and of a pretty decent quantity seemed a little bland. To be fair both versions I had were w/o sauerkraut and that acid component would have really helped my overall impression. But for great cheese steaks and a pretty decent impression of a stand alone diner environment check out Lefty's.

This hidden gem is a must try. Doesn't get any better than his place. If your in the area check it out for your self, I promise they will not disappoint.

I found this place while waiting for a friend to get home. Great food and the owner is very nice. Not from the area but I will be back. Open one on the east side!

I wanted to like the cheesesteaks here, but after visiting Philadelphia several times and eating at Pat's Cheesesteaks and Geno's Cheesesteaks, Lefty's was a little too salty and had the slight taste of onion powder. Although they are not bad for Detroit, I will wait until the next trip to Philly for a GREAT legendary cheesesteak.

One of the better cheese steaks in the area. I've been to Philly and Leftys is definitely better then Gino's . Prices on the high side and the fries aren't worth it but very good sandwich.

Searched from the Yelp to find the best place for Cheesesteak, and nailed it. They have their own special sauce that makes your mouth watering, it's fantastic. Furthermore, they actually sell their sauce on the jar, so you can purchase from the counter. I had a best experience on the hoagies in my life. The owner is so cool. This place made my day. I'll come back whenever I need the Lefty's flavor.

Best cheese steaks in the area and I hve tried my share. Even been to Philly. Not at the two meccas though. Simple and what a cheesesteak should be. Meat. Cheese. Bread. Some diced onions. The bread, the quality and tenderness of meat, the way the meat is chopped fine, the way the onions are diced fine and not overwhelming, the white american cheese. The cheese choice is provolone or white american. Both are good. White Am. slightly better. Only negative is no cheese whiz. There is no lettuce, tomato. Doesnt need it but I put some on at home sometimes. Good fries too. Corned beef looked good. Will hve to try. Keep in mind these are tough to reheat (water on bun, micro for less than 20 secs) so its best to eat them right away. I like mayo on mine sometimes and their mayo is inferior to Hellman's. The mayo is no good. Only negative thing I can really say. Love the butcher paper the sandwich is wrapped in. The hot cherry peppers are addictive. Get on side and add as you like. The only place close as others hve mentioned is Gabriels and I have had both. Leftys is better. There arent many great cheesesteak spots even though its sold many places. This filled a needed niche. Some hve mentioned the soft bun. I think it actually works in this instance.

I've always drove by this place and never gave it a second thought. Drove by with my wife a week or so ago and decided to stop and grab a bite. We ordered the cheese steak sandwiches and onion rings and fries. Probably the best we've ever had. Didn't know a place existed like this in Livonia. We will be back. We also bought a jar of the pepper sauce that they put on the sandwich. That was amazing.

This place wasn't bad at all but i don't think it's the best. The customer service was a high 4.5 out of 5; he was nice and funny as well. I like how they had Yelp reviews posted on their counter - it shows they are watching what real people have to say. Next time i might ask for extra mushroom and onion - they seem to be very light with them. I'll be back soon... you never know i might up my 3 stars to a 4 stars. Happy eating!

Submarine War #4 Passing this restaurant too many times when going to my daughter's I finally stopped. Of course I read the reviews before going so I had an idea what to expect. I should have taken someones advice to get extra cheese or add the same cheese as the chili cheese fries. There is so much meat! Hot, tasty fresh bun, fantastic! The chili cheese fries were great, super hot and tasty. I will be definitely be going back. This is a must try place.

Excellent cheesesteaks with the best customer service around. As everyone else has suggested, order your cheesesteak with extra cheese. I've never ordered it "regular" style as not to be disappointed. My friends order it with peppers and mushrooms, as well as hot peppers. The owner is always there (does he sleep?) and he's super-friendly and thorough when taking your order. The food doesn't take long to come out. And it is delicious. So, so delicious. Whenever I'm in Livonia, I'm always thinking about Lefty. Sorry, husband!

Good solid Cheesesteak. Plenty of beef. The Xtra cheese and mushrooms were an add on, but essential to a great Cheesesteak. I'm not a big fan of the nickel and dime program where you are charged $.65 for items on your sandwich and my rating reflects that. The Rueben Sandwich was very good, but was a couple dollars more than the Cheesesteak. The fries were good, hot and freshly made, as were all our items. All the staff were super friendly and accommodating. I'm going 4 stars, and I'll be back...

Went here today for the first time. The sandwiches were really good. The peppers they put on sandwiches are soo good. I will be going back.

2 times in one week, I think that says a lot! This place has the best cheesesteak sandwiches! I took the recommendations and added peppers. The peppers are seriously addicting. The portions are generous. I will ask for more cheese next time. They recently added curly fries and I tried them with cheese. They were pretty good, but like the cheesesteak I will ask for extra cheese on the fries next time. They will start being open on Sundays in September. Also, they will begin delivering soon. They have other things besides cheesesteaks- they have burgers, Reuben's, and hot dogs.

Really good. Always in search of a real cheesesteak being from east coast, this does really well.

Best cheesesteak this side of Philly!!! Good hints to go with extra cheese. Great service.

  • Ming C.

I am still sitting at Lefty's in a kind of cheesesteak euphoria. Plentiful amount of good meat, delicious melted cheese in the middle and perfectly grilled onions. Served piping hot. Clean and welcoming diner style restaurant with fast and friendly service. Definitely coming back if I'm in Livonia again!

  • Cuemaster S.

I tried it, had the cheesesteak and the corned beef sandwiches. Both were the bomb! Better corned beef than bread basket and the cheese steak was all everyone has said it was. And they were seven something not 12 so I'd say very reasonably priced. Just go and thank me later.

Im not gonna sit here and say that this is the best place. BUT I will say that I am definitely a repeat customer. Foods great and service is served with a smile. Small and the owner makes sures its friendly.

  • Nan G.

Really good food and counter people are nice. I hope the business is doing well, I wouldn't want to see it closed. The burgers are fresh, they aren't frozen patties and the cheesesteak is different and good too. Try the peppers on it, they are good but I don't the extra charge for them either.

Service was excellent. Everyone was really friendly. Onion rings were great. Cheesesteaks hit the spot. I recommend this place to anyone.

  • Greg S.

Excellent sandwich. The cherry peppers give it a nice kick, not too hot but you can break a sweat at the end of a whole sandwich. Had the onion rings which were quite good, and I think they make them. If they come from a bag, they're very good ones. Only complaint was rings order was on the smaller side, $3.20 worth was a little dubious. Highly recommend.

I have been here twice today. It was so good I drove my co workers cray with the yummy smell and came back to get them cheese steaks and onion rings! Fantastic meat, REAL cheese, great balance of onion an mushrooms, soft bread. Order the extra cheese! I had grilled mushrooms. Best I've had outside of Philadelphia! I will be back and back and back.

I'd wanted to try Lefty's for a while - I've passed by it a number of times and finally had the chance. Walked in slightly post rush-hour and pre-dinner time to escape the horrible traffic lineups at pretty much EVERY intersection on 6-Mile due to the 96 shut down. I was just on the hunt for a quick dinner and so irritated with traffic! The place to me is surprisingly clean and bright - I don't know why but I expected it to be seedier and more like a dive. I was greeted by a very friendly man behind the counter as I glanced at the menu and had some light conversation with him. I mentioned I'd never been before but had heard, and he recommended their signature cheesesteak. I've been to some 'small-menu' places, and at times I find the employees to be impatient if they are busy and you don't know exactly what you want yet by the time you're "up to bat" because you don't know exactly what the heck they offer, while 'regulars' behind you are also irritated that you need more than 10 seconds to check out the menu on the wall. (And yes, I know there are some of 'those people' probably reading this right now and YES, I too get annoyed when people in front of me in fast-moving lines are dragging their feet in LaLa Land ~ But I am not that type, so give a sister a break here! I just need a minute to check stuff out!) Fortunately, the place wasn't hopping, there was one couple dining in and I had the man behind the counter all to myself. I ordered one for me and one for the ole man and was intrigued by the "spicy pepper sauce" - Sure, slap some on there! For me, the onions inside were perfect. I like a good onion flavor, well-cooked onions and not onion over-kill, and in this sandwich I tasted them but was not overwhelmed. The meat was chopped so finely, so tender, and all mixed within the cheese, good bread, and I loved the pepper sauce. I didn't find it to be too spicy at all and will have them slap some more on there next time. The ole man enjoyed his too. He despises onions and can be very picky about food at times, and if it gets his thumbs-up them I have accomplished my mission. Both of us hate-hate-hate (did I mention HATE) tough, stringy meat that you pull in its entirety out of the sandwich with your mouth in one gross, fatty piece on your first bite. When that happens, it's GAME OVER for me, I generally throw what is left in my hands down on the plate and then the whole thing swiftly goes in the trash. This meat was not fatty or tough at all, it's clear that they use quality meat and are proud of what they put across the counter. And, my order was literally done in about 3 minutes. I ordered a side of fries too. They were the crinkle-cut nothing special, but the sandwich was delicious. Not sure what their other offerings taste like, but I will definitely be back for a cheesesteak. Kind of curious about the corned beef, and hopefully it's not that tough-stringy-fatty mess I spoke of earlier that I seem to so commonly run in to with corned beef and steak sandwiches. I wish I'd stopped in sooner!

Coming from someone who has worked here I'll say its excellent. The owner is passionate about the food and the service. Everything must be perfect. Worked in a lot of kitchens through the years and this one was one of the most pleasent.

My favorite lunch stop, but I wish he was open on a Sunday. I have no complaints. I have been coming her for about two years and my orders has always been great, the service has been amazing. I would highly suggest checking out leftys and get a cheesesteak hogie and onion ring. Great athmostphere

Cheesesteak hoagie was awesome. Tons of meat, not dry or chewy at all. Bread was soft and fluffy too. One minor quibble--they charge 0.50 for fountain drink refills. The large soft drink is 1.99. Who charges for refills any more? (especially when the initial price of the drink is not cheap)

Absolutely love this place! The food is simple, yet fantastic! Best cheesesteak around for sure! We always get an extra for later.

  • Jenna A.

My husband and I had the cheesesteak hoagies today; one with sweet/hot cherry peppers and the other without. Both were delicious! I especially love how the cheese melts on the bottom. I also liked the chopped meat. I wish I could add green pepper with the sautéed onions and beef, but otherwise no complaint. I had the onion rings and they were very good. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We'll be going back for sure.

I really dont see the greatness in the other reviews, not worth the money though in my opinion, I got a cheese steak and an order of onion rings the total was $12.12 which was pretty pricy but I was hungry and I've wanted to try this place as I have passed by here several times and the reviews were pretty good anyways back to the food...the cheese steak was ok but kinda dry like it needed some sauce or something, then there were the onion rings...total disappointment! Not only were they soggy but there were only 7 onion rings in the foam (not good for the environment) box.really? Well to finish off I will not be coming back here or recommend to anyone I know, sorry leftys way over priced for the quality of your food also as I was waiting for my order I noticed 2 women at the counter order and the lady told them $29 they looked at each other then back at the lady they looked shocked as they were digging in thier wallets for the money, you can literally go have a nice sit down better meal for the price of this place

I randomly drove by Lefty's as I was scouring the area near my new workplace. Being a cheesesteak-a-holic I had to stop by, despite my recent changes in diet and overall health. Looks like a converted gas station or something of the like, as though it wasn't a former restaurant, but I'm not sure. The place is little, clean and the people were nice when they greeted me. Menu consists of burgers, coneys, cheesesteaks and all types of sides like fries, onion rings and chili fries. I ordered a cheesesteak, fries and a pop. The cheesesteak was good - really didn't WOW me. Same type of meat consistency as Izzy's and Lenny's - finely chopped with finely chopped onions throughout. The bun, however, was just like an oversized hot dog bun; no texture or flavor, just pillowy fluff. The meat was flavorful, but the cheese was almost non-existent. I recommend a slice on the bottom, under the meat, and then a slice on top of the meat for an appropriate "meat/cheese ratio." I found the service to be pleasant, but they practiced my least favorite kind of service - the "treat your regulars 100% better than the rest of us." I think a regular even got food without paying, and another one just walked right behind the counter and hung out with them for a few. Regarding the one who went behind the counter, he may have been a part-owner, but us regular guests don't know that... All in all, it was a nice little place that I would return to. I'd like to try the coneys and burgers.

Double thumbs up is how my husband summed up his sandwich. He had the cheesesteak with the hot peppers. I had just the regular cheesesteak. Next time, because there will be a next time, I'm making sure to get the hot peppers on mine. I couldn't really taste the onion, and wish there was a bit more in there. The meat was really chopped, but still delicious. I'm not sure if either the meat was greasy at all, or if the bun just did a really good job soaking up the grease, but there was not grease running all over the place. Like someone else mentioned, I only used 1 napkin. This wasn't the best cheesesteak that I've ever had, but it was good. The prices were reasonable. The staff was extremely friendly and my to-go order was ready quickly. I'll be back for more.

Delicious cheesesteak. You have to get the cherry peppers on it- fantastic! I have been wanting to try other things on the menu but can't seem to resist my usual. The family who owns it is very friendly. I love being able to support a local business that makes such a great product.

I have ate at every cheesesteak place in southeast michigan from monroe to waterford and leftys is by far the best. Always hot, fresh and fast, the owner paul comes out to check on my food every time to make sure it is good. even though i have been trying to eat healthy i cannot resist eating here at least twice a week. YOU MUST TRY THIS PLACE IF YOU ARE A TRUE PHILLY FAN, ALSO THE OWNER RIBEYE LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE, NOT THE JUNK SIRLOIN THAT OTHER PLACES USE TO SAVE MONEY.

  • Kris A.

OK, we got the recommendation to try Lefty's from a coworker who has searched tirelessly for the best cheesesteak hoagie around. So 7 of us take a much needed lunch break and head out to sample the goods. At first sight I was surprised to see that it wasn't quite the "dive" I had anticipated. It was bright and clean and well maintained. Strike one? Maybe... Everyone in our group ordered cheesesteaks of some variety, with or without mushrooms, onions, peppers, etc. I had mine with onions & mushrooms, a side of chili cheese fries (who can resist???), and yes a large diet to counterbalance the caloric intake. The service was EXTREMELY nice and worked extra hard to get our orders out together in a timely manner. Everyone got the correct food, and we dug in. My first impression of the hoagie was "what is that flavor"? Mind you, I've done the "Philly Challenge" and ate 11 cheesesteaks in 3 days in search of the perfect one (which I found!), so I'm a bit particular when it comes to authenticity. That flavor? It was a white American and Swiss blend of cheeses!!! What??? No Whiz? You're kidding, really??? OK, after a few more bites I decided that though not authentic, the cheese was also not awful. In fact, it was sort of tasty. The bun was a good bread-to-meat ratio with nice texture so no complaints there. The mushrooms were (typically) canned and grilled, which I don't have a problem with. Now let's get to the meat. A cheesesteak hoagie is supposed to be something akin to "..a sandwich made from thinly sliced pieces of steak and melted cheese in a long roll" to quote Wikipedia. Note the reference to thinly sliced meat. Most true Philly Cheesesteak chefs will also throw a "chop in to break up the thin slices of meat and incorporate the cheese and onions. Again...thinly...sliced... meat! Not chopped so much that I had to wonder if I had ordered a loose meat sandwich (which is also on the menu). I wasn't sure if it was ground beef at first. WAY too much chopping of the beef! It was dead already. There was also not nearly enough greasy gooeyness, and it was overcooked. I only had to use one napkin for cryin' out loud! Overall, it wasn't awful, it just wasn't great, and not nearly as good as I had hoped. The chili cheese fries were rudimentary at best. Crinkle fries with what I assumed to be canned coney chili and cheese whiz (there it was, in the wrong place!). Palatable, but that's it. The prices are reasonable, staff is friendly, and the food is OK, so I wouldn't say don't stop in sometime. Just don't stop in if you're on a quest for a truly remarkable, authentic Philly cheesesteak hoagie, unless you're just out to check it off your list. Just to be fair, the other people I was with thought is was certainly worth a return trip.

This place is overpriced. Not very good either. Gabriel's Cheesesteak destroys this place. The people are way nicer too. Stay away from Lefty's.

  • John C.

Best cheesesteak in the area I have found. Good solid beefy cheesy taste. Go for the extra cheese and mushrooms (like $1 total/extra for both). Only complaint is they are a little skimpy on the meat, maybe they could add a extra meat option?
