There's a lot of North-easterner (read as New York City), bagel elitism going on these days - no offense Deal R. If one makes the massive faux pas of even bringing up Einstein Bagel in any mixed company south of Wheaton, but north of Tenleytown you'll need a flak jacket to withstand the barrage of insults. However, I must say that Goldberg's has nothing short of a kick ass bagel. They are truly very good. You can't go wrong with toasted and a spread. My go to is the scallion, which admittedly isn't very adventurous, but there is deliciousness in simplicity. I also appreciate that it seems to be a real meeting place for the surrounding community. That's awesome. So why the 3? It's a total cop out to ask for the ability to split a vote, but I'd LOVE to in the case of Goldberg's. The food is absolutely a 10 out of 10, but the actual ambiance of the place, the feeling when you walk in there, is nothing short of bad and awkward. It is possible it is me in particular, because I know I've contradicted myself by stating that it is a community meeting place. But I visited this place virtually every morning when I was pregnant and over a 7 or 8 month period, I was never greeted with a smile, or a "Good morning." I kid you not - it didn't happen once! No glance of familiarity. It was like I was a stranger every single time. I would approach the counter, be greeted by silence and a vaguely annoyed look, then give my order, sidle to the left to pick it up and skedaddle to my car as quickly as possible. I know they have lots of customers, but I didn't see that many pregnant, African-American women hanging out at the Kosher bagel place. I'm not that hard to remember given the setting. It seems like one of those cases where you just put up with the lack of basic customer service, because the food is very good, convenient and quick. Perhaps it is a reverse selling technique. Someday, when I earn that smile... I'm going to do a freaking back flip.

Their bagels are wonderful! Just like a New York style bagel should be! I also tried the veggie "sausage" omelet, Tasty!

I think the other commenters hit it right on the head. The bagels are fantastic (I'm from NY) but the service is horrendous, everyday is like opening day confusion, they don't have nearly the deli selections to put on the bagel like a Bagel City or Bethesda Bagel (inferior bagels with service AND selection), they are closed on saturdays which is one of the two days when I would buy a bagel... On a side note bagels are "proofed" somewhere else and brought here to be finished, not that it matters because the quality is there...

Best bagel I've ever had hands down. They have that perfect slightly crisp outside and an amazing chewy inside. Topped with some lox there really isn't a better way to start the day.

Don't be fooled, this "Goldberg's" is NOT the same as Goldberg's in Baltimore. MoCo residents are being ripped off by the owner of these establishments. They are rude here and the bagels and restaurant items don't compare to quality and quantity of the Baltimore Goldberg's. I see that they are opening a Goldberg's at Cabin John and I certainly won't be a customer there.

Have tried many things from here both dine in, take out, and catering. I really like the bagels and the freshness of the foo here. The service is okay, and the speed of getting the food isn't quick. The prices are high for the quantity of food that you get, and the quality is a little bit better than okay. The bagels and cream cheese are the best. I also enjoy the soups they have and the wraps. The falafel wrap is pretty good.

The place isn't much when you walk in. Not as clean and modern as I like. This restaurant is kosher dairy. No outside food or drink is allowed, which is understandable. Ordered the avocado wrap on whole wheat. I wish there was more veggies on it. A lot of wrap. Veggies were fresh. I also got fries. They didn't come right away I had to ask for them. They were hot and seasoned. They have all the amenities needed for kashrut eating. Nice staff. Expensive due to the kosher nature, but reasonable if you are used to kosher prices. I'd eat here again.

If you keep kosher (and even if you don't) these may be the best bagels available in DC. They'll also prepare a kosher sandwich or snack plate. The only problem is the long wait you may have to endure when there are customers ahead of you. It's certainly a far better bet than the nearby kosher bakery which has a long way to go to achieve mediocrity.

Boss just treated me to a Nova bagel and I am now a fan of Goldberg's! Yea, just like that! Anyone that knows me can tell you I'm a HUGE bagels and lox aficionado, and Golberg's quality just gained them another fan! Their boiled bagels are crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside! Their smoked salmon is fresh and they top the sandwich with red onions, tomatoes, and capers (this was a special request and they obliged!). I ate half my sandwich not only because I wanted to save it for later, but also because this yummy delight is freakin' massive!! Definitely feeling like a substance abuser right now, I had a taste and now I'm hooked. Of course I'll be back! Check them out!

I needed to pick up some breakfast for my office mates, and since I was in the area I decided to try them out. The place is pretty dingy inside, and clearly hasn't been updated in several decades. The cashier was very grumpy and spoke so low I couldn't even hear, despite me asking him to repeat himself several times. As for the bagels, I was actually impressed, they were pretty tasty and as close to real bagels as I've had around here. But for the price, you can get better, and with better service.

I'm not sure if this is a real business or not at this point. I stopped by at 1 pm (3 hours before close) on a Thursday, and they had no bagels of any flavor for sale at all. I arrived at 2:58 pm (granted, only 2 minutes before close) on a Sunday and he literally locked the door in my face. I don't think I'll be back for a third try.

These are the best bagels in the DC area hands down. Lets look at the facts: -the owners are Jewish -the owners are from New York. Based on those facts alone, you know Goldberg's is going to be good, and it is. I've spent my life living between NYC and DC and like to consider myself a bagel expert. These bagels get my stamp.

  • Dominic L.

Best bagels in DC that I've had. They've upped their prices over the years but it's just too good to pass up. All the sandwiches I've had were satisfying. The soups are solid too. Heard good things about Bethesda Bagels, but haven't tried them yet. The staff is friendly and there's plenty of seating. The only thing is it's off the beaten path in terms of Rockville establishments.

I hear the bagels are pretty tasty at this joint, but I wouldn't know. After standing in a line that didn't move for 15 minutes, I decided I didn't care how good they were and left. Really people, it's a bagel. How long does it take to slap some spread on a piece of bread? And if you feel the need to practice your religion on Saturdays, more power to ya. But for crying out loud hire some non-religious folks to keep the place open on Saturdays when most people actually have 1/2 the morning to spend waiting in line for a bagel.

I've been looking for a good bagel shop in MD after having lived in Long Island for almost 10 years. As a disclaimer, I hated LI with a passion, but damn, the best bagels I ever had were from that area. When I relocated for a new job in MD, I was sorely disappointed by the range of bagels that were available. Some were too much like bread rolls, some were flat and tasteless, all disappointments. So I checked out Yelp to find some better bagel shops and I stumbled upon Goldberg's in Rockville, MD. It's located rather out of the way from MD 355 and it's tucked into a residential area. The hassle to get there from Eastern MD was worth it. They had plenty of bagels at 11:00 am on a Sunday and the bagels looked absolutely delicious. The cashier was courteous and took my order quickly. I ordered an everything bagel with cream cheese (not toasted), and when I took the first bite, I was in heaven. Crisp outside and soft, chewy inside, and just the right amount of salt in the topping. Perfection! This would have been a 5 star review if the food preparation service was faster. At my old bagel/deli place in NY, it would have been less than 5 minutes for a server to cut a bagel in half, smear cream cheese on both halves, wrap it, and hand it over to me. Here, I waited for over 15 minutes while the server bumbled about working on other orders that arrived after I placed mine. I even saw him throw out my order ticket in the garbage and then move on to other orders. When I asked him about where my order was, he admitted that he threw it out and that he'd get another bagel for me. He quickly sliced the bagel, put spread on it and then wrapped it up, all under 1 minute. This was really unimpressive and really makes me just want to order a dozen bagels and leave during my next visit.

I've been going to Goldberg's in Rockville for over a decade. For at least 5 years, I've bought food for large events. The bagels are still the best ever -- water boiled and then baked to a perfect slight stick-to-the-tooth bite. Five years ago they had the best whitefish salad anywhere. It was so creamy and rich that a thin layer of oil would settle to the top if you let it sit a while and large chunks of delectable whitefish. It's been going downhill for a while -- chunks of whitefish getting smaller and the salad not as creamy. Last week i brought what should have been a feast into work and told folks how delicious it would be. The whitefish salad was awful. It was cloyingly sweet. Who puts sugar in whitefish salad? The fish was minced much finer that it used to be, too. I'm trying to find out what happened, but until I do, I'm going to Cosco.

Yum yum yum! Love Goldbergs, glad we finally decided to check this place out! Come early, because what they bake, is what they have! The bagels are all made fresh, and the "sausage" and egg bagel sandwich is soooo good! I dont know what the sausage actually is, but its really yummy! Its huge and messy and delicious, and only $5.99! The gentleman that work there have always been pleasant enough; no problems there. We love Goldbergs!

Best Bagel place in the area by a long shot! Other places nearby don't compete. There is no completion, keep it up Goldbergs!

Three Yelps for a less good visit to Goldberg's Bagels in Rockville rather than Potomac. It's not entirely their fault. I got there at 1:00 on a Sunday, which, apparently, makes their store "The Land That Good Flavors of Bagels Forgot." They were out of Black Russian, out of Whole Wheat Everything, other stuff, so I settled. I shall not again settle. We ordered a plain bagel with tuna fish and a regular whole wheat with egg, lox and onions. The tuna was finely ground, but the bagel was, well, fine. The whole wheat bagel was also fine, but the meal was a little greasy. Did try the whitefish salad this time, and that was very chunky, which I like, and tasty. If you like your fish salads really finely ground, you'll waste half of this one, so don't get it unless you're open to chunky fish salad. We also tried some fairly tasty cinnamon French toast, which was a special. So overall, not bad, but not a great trip. The E/L/O being greasy was a little bit of a turnoff. Since it's like two minutes closer than the one in Potomac, I probably won't go back.

Not sure why everybody complained about the poor customer svc. Having moved here from TX, it seems to be the norm around here! Most people here are rude, I've come to expect it, unfortunately. Went in this afternoon, despite my non confrontational disposition, with my 3 boys. Lunch time crowd was non existent. Got 3 kid bagels & 1 reg w/cream cheese. How could they screw that up? Well...they did. To my benefit, though, by 1/2 a bagel. :) I felt the cream cheese amount was generous & the bagels were AMAZING! I will be back, for sure.

Good Bagels...probably won't return. In general a pretty useless review, I know...kind of how I felt about my bagel and tuna if that makes sense.

5 stars for the bagels, far less for service. The guy behind the counter is always (and we have been many times) disgruntled and unhappy to serve. The owner is lovely, not sure why this is tolerated. I've switched to the silver spring location which is great.

Definitely very good bagels for $0.75 a pop. Are they the best? I'm no New Yorker, so you be the judge. This place keeps Kosher, so don't waste the gas in your tank for a Saturday morning bagel craving. Edit: 7/31/07 Bagels are now $0.85.

I visited the Rockville location this past Sunday. After waiting in line for approximately 15 minutes (it wasn't busy, probably 5 people in front of us), the person behind the counter seemed annoyed that we wanted to ordered. He then hastily wrote down our order on a piece of scrap paper, and placed our bagels in a questionably sanitary window so another guy could finish the order. Upon receiving our simple orders: 1.) everything bagel with egg and sausage and coffee 2.) whole wheat everything bagel with cream cheese and an OJ). First, there was barely any coffee in the coffee pot. Upon bringing this to the guys attention, he didn't say anything, and went back to work, only to address the coffee issue a few minutes later. Then, the sausage egg and cheese bagel was suppose to come on an everything bagel, but came on a plain bagel. Not surprisingly, the woman in front of us took her order to go, and came back explaining that she was given the wrong bagel. Then, when I received my bagel, it wasn't toasted. No big deal, we asked the guy to toast it. He said, and I quote, "No, I already put cream cheese on it." He then went on to point out that the order didn't specify a 'toasted bagel' or not. Fair enough, but we were never asked, either. So, to be warned, always specify if you want your bagel toasted or not. Finally, we convinced him to put the whole bagel in the toaster for a few minutes (really did the trick, warmed it up and made the outside crispy). Overall, it took us at least 20 minutes from the time we entered the place to the time we sat down with our (incorrect) orders. Aside from the poor service, the bagel was absolutely delicious. I will be going back, but will be ordering a half dozen or so to go to avoid any further interactions with anyone on the staff. Also, I feel it is imperative to add that I have also visited their George Ave Location and it was like a different business!

Finally, good bagels. Real boiled, then baked bagels with the right flavor and chew. This place is not fancy and doesn't have a huge deli case. I'm going to try their mushroom omelet and pancakes soon, but haven't yet; basically you're going because you aren't satisfied by the lesser bagels elsewhere. We'd heard that Ize's and Bagel City were good, but though they have a wider variety of items, their bagels don't compare. It might also be important to know that they open at 7:00 and close at 3:00 every day but Thursday, when they close at 7:00, so don't go after work. Closed Saturday, open Sunday.

Catered from here and felt totally ripped off...very skimpy amounts of food...missing items they say you get on the menu (told me menu changed on the day it was delivered when I inquired about missing food items)...also stated they included "fancy paper goods"...but it was basically the plates you get from the dollar store and they even ripped open packages and removed some to ensure I only got 50...I guess since the order was for 50 people. Very rude response when I complained and was told "your guests were probably on low carb diets" when I explained we ran out of food (lox and tuna in paricular) and guests left hungry....will never go back again!

These bagels are the closest ones in the area we've found to fresh, New-York style ones! My husband and I go every week to get a dozen. Be aware they are closed on the Sabbath (Friday after 2pm and Saturday during the day.) Still have yet to find better bagels in the D.C. area.

Best bagels in the area hands down! They are not open on Saturday's due to religious reasons. I have tried all the bagel spots around here, and this is the only place I go now.

Bagely Perfection. Moist, chewy without being rubbery, ahh. I get a pumpernickel bagel with lite veggie cream cheese. Sometimes I buy a box of cookies for the office. The cookies they sell by the register come from another kosher deli in Reisterstown. Bring cash if you are only getting a bagel as they do have a credit card minimum (I think $5?). Also, make sure it's not a Jewish holiday. I apparently crave these bagels the most around Rosh Hashana, Simchat Torah, and the first day of Passover.

  • Jae P.

Do they bring down NYC tap water to make their bagels? If you gave me a bagel from Goldberg's or one from NYC, I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. Thank goodness for this bagel place in Maryland. The sizes are not teensy like other bagel places around here, and the softness and texture are what a real bagel should be.

Just had a bialy at Goldbergs (actually I'm typing on my computer here right now). I decided to get it with chive cream cheese and a side of whitefish salad. The whitefish salad- man is that good. It is 100 percent made in house. You'll get large chunks of whitefish in that B. It's absolutely wonderful. The chive cream cheese also delicious and fresh. The bialy toasted perfectly. The tomato fresh. There's just not much more you can ask for. Yeah, the place is a little outdated, and yes the cashier isn't always wearing the the biggest smile. But, if you're here for the bagels- you'll be here for a while.

best bagels in the DC area. perfect texture. Just like the delicious bagels you get in NYC. They are authentic. The white fish salad is excellent and not too much mayo. They are closed for Sabbath and also Jewish holidays so if you're not familiar, check a calendar or give them a call around the holidays if you're not sure. Their coffee isn't the best for my pallet but really, it's a bagel place. You're going for the bagels..rate the bagels. Inexpensive and tasty.

Best bagels in the area, hearty and flavorful. TONS of whole-grain choices, well worth the trip from anywhere in Montgomery County. I've been scouring the area for whole grain bagels, and this place is - by far - the best. Would take away half a star for the 'New York style' (not terribly friendly) service, but I love the bagels too much to worry about it.

My wife and I ordered a lox and smoked fish platter for 22 people for Yom Kippur Breakfast. We paid just shy of $350. When I went to pick up the platter it felt "light", that there was not enough food on the platter to feed the crowd. I mentioned this to the store manger who suggested I call the owner Dan. After several attempts to reach him, we finally spoke. I was told the platter had enough food. I disputed this but was told don't worry. After speaking with my wife, I rushed out an bought another pound of lox. When our guests came to the house, they politely said that this platter looked smaller than in years past. Turns out not only was the platter light on lox, we ran out of cream cream, tomatoes, cheese, etc. I was embarrassed since this is not how we serve. The guests ate kugel, soufflé and other items we made. The point of all of this is that Dan the owner made excuses to a customer. One by the way who in the last 6 weeks spent over $550 at his store. Not a stellar way to treat a good customer. After the holiday I called and spoke to Joe. The owner was out of town. Joe was not authorized to do anything. We will have to wait and see how this gets resolved if at all. I will update this review in the future when we have a resolution. If they come through, I will let Yelp readers know. If they fail to be customer friendly, I will let you know as well. Stay tuned.
