My all time favorite restaurant, crabclaws are to die for, while dipping the hot bread in the sauce.. The specials are the way to go, although I have been getting the veal pica for the last 30 years. Seafood cannelloni or crabmeat augrutin augrutin are also excellent choices . Dinner would not be complete without a bochi and special coffee drink. On the Italian side thelasagna is great! If you are on a diet , I advise skip the diet for that night .its a classic! ! Not dated!

THE WORLD'S GREATEST FOOD!!! I live in New Orleans and I have been frequenting Sal and Judy's for decades. The food is to die for. Even though it is a one hour drive from the city it still takes 2 weeks to get a reservation here. That should tell you something. I order several entrees because I have to have leftovers for several days. I also have to hide them in my fridge so that the kids don't scarf them down ravenously. I begin by ordering appetizers such as the crabmeat au gratin, marinated crab claws, and seafood cannelloni. (By the way...none of these are on the menu , they are always the special of the day) The entree always comes with a fresh house salad with the signature caesar dressing and either a side of homemade pasta or sauteed green beans. The green beans are my favorite. When the entrees come, look out! Usually there are such big portions that the table is completely full. I get the redfish or trout nicholas, shrimp scampi, and the (standing 7 inches off your plate)veal chop. You can order the nicholas sauce on anything; steak, paneed veal, or fish. The nicholas sauce is a white, creamy, sauce filled with crabmeat, shrimp and mushrooms. Believe me they do not skimp on anything. Every aspect of my meal is fabulous, even the coffee and dessert. The service is wonderful, the atmosphere is comfortable, and they make you feel like family. Never are you rushed. Sal and Judy's also market and sell their products like pasta sauces, salad dressings, marinades, and olive salad in local grocery stores. You have to go to the restaurant to get a true "better than sex " experience. There are hundreds of fine eating establishments in the New Orleans area, of which I've frequented most. This place is the best restaurant hands down. Even better than Besh.

Absolutely disgusted with the customer service. Came in for a romantic dinner but was very disappointed with the lack of a response to a table of 10 that made loud and vulgar commentary throughout the evening. I really do not care to listen to another groups insight on gay and straight sex along with there graphic verbal imagery. Staff was horrified and apologized. Noticed other couples were uncomfortable. When brought to the attention of the manager, he apologized but did nothing. Spoke with the owner (head chef) when leaving but he was ambivalent. He commented that they were just having fun. I will not be patronizing this establishment again. Highly discourage eating at Sal and Judy's!

I have only eaten here twice, but I can honestly say this is my favorite restaurant. The only downside is your leftovers will magically disappear from the fridge before you get a chance to finish them. I have yet to find this restaurant's equal. The service is impeccable. If I lived within an hour drive I would be here once a week!

Incredibly loud, nothing for vegetarians, and my friend had a live roach in his salad! The owner seemed so embarrassed about this and came out and apologized, but seriously, where do you go from there? Personally, I wouldn't have eaten another bite if that had been me. They had to make up a dish for me, pasta with olive oil and mushrooms and green bell peppers. That's it. Blah... I mean, it was food, but I would have much preferred to skip the restaurant and make myself something at home. I don't get the hype... Sorry. :(

Sal's, what can I say?! If you don't get this place you haven't been enough times or you ain't trying. New Orleans style Italian with the greatest guy at the helm who visits with every patron with his think Italian accent. It is an open dining area with a pink decor, which you need to get over, as most important is the food and your friends at the surrounding tables. Yes, Galatoires of the Northshore. These guys can cook and expect more lump crabmeat on the dish as a garnish than you get at any Brennan's restaurant as a main. They can cook anything, so if you don't see anything to your fancy on the menu, ask very nicely and they will probably do your favorite if they are not too busy. Most of my favorite dishes are off the menu, but you cannot go wrong with any of the traditional Louisiana fish or steak dishes. Top shelf stuff.

I had an incredible meal at Sal and Judy's last night. It was pan-fried (not breaded) softshell crabs. They were so good and came with green beans and a salad. They had a "sauce" on the side. I put "sauce" in quotes because that was a meal in itself. It had huge lumps of seafood in it! The desert was the kicker. I had the bacci, which had a lot of whipped cream and amaretto involved in it. Delicious. The service was quite good. If you are looking for old-school, upscale New Orleans-area Italian food on the Northshore, this is your place.

Yeh, just not as impressed as I thought I would be. People just rave about this place, so I figured it was special. Nope, run of the mill Italian restaurant with seafood dishes. I ordered the Veal Cannelloni and it was just ok. It was bland and the presentation just wasn't appetizing. The whole experience besides the dim lighting was just ok. Nothing to write home about. I made the first strike at the door when we were not greeted immediately and stood there for about 2:00 with no one even telling us hello.( staff was present). The waiter was a little slow and at the end came back to ask for the pen that one of our guests had taken.... It was a sal and judy's advertising pen, so she just wanted to have it. It was weird, to say the least.

Took parents to this restaurant because I heard so much about it. Have never been before. I read the YELP Reviews and the 5-star reviewers said to check out the crab claws. Well, I got to tell you they are EXCELLENT! Way better than expected. The redfish catch of the day with crap meat on top was so superb I finished it all. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Northshore Italian Creole/Cajun Dinner. Awesome atmosphere!!! The wait staff is so friendly and helpful too.

NO idea why this restaurant is so highly rated. Their spaghetti and meatballs are not as good as the ones that I make, and I would have expected them to be much better. Also, you get the feeling that you are "just a number" there with the service - as if you're being moved in and moved out for the next group. We've been there twice (to give a fair change for 2nd time), and even the other couple we were with (the 2nd time) commented that it was "okay".

Sal and Judy's is a place that pretty much gets universal praise. While definitely a unique experience, I don't think it's one of the best. Some friends and I made reservations several weeks in advance. We arrived early so our table wasn't quite ready, and we grabbed a drink at the bar. The bartender was friendly, but seemed too busy despite the small crowd. Once our table was ready we were brought to the main dining area and it was packed. The menu contained all of the standards you expect to find in a Nola Italian restaurant. Since I had heard so many people sing its praises, I went with the veal parmesan. When the server brought out the portion, I thought there had been a mistake. The amount of food on that plate would have served two people, if not more. They definitely don't shy away from the large portions here. I did enjoy the veal, but to me, it didn't live up to the hype. From what everyone had told me, I was expecting the best veal parmesan I had ever consumed. Unfortunately that was not the case. The servers were incredibly friendly and patient especially once the wine started flowing. I even ended up betting one server her table sweeper that I could get the most mad looking server to give me a high five. I got the high five and the table sweeper. It was somehow lost at the next place I visited, but I still won that bet. I was kind of shocked that this restaurant didn't live up to the hype. It has been open and getting giant crowds forever. Maybe I just visited on an off night.

OMG! They have the absolute best dish called Redfish Nicholas! Redfish broiled with sauce lump crab meat and shrimp on top comes with those crisp delicious green beans. My wife and I have this every time we go and we go as often as we can. The service is impeccable from the bar to the table. Always ready when you need them and if you are lucky Sal himself will come out of the kitchen to great you! You gotta go!

I've heard great things about this restaurant so I made my reservation well in advance. What a disappointment. While the interior looks dated as some others mentioned, that isn't a big deal to me. Our party did not have good service. We were never served our salads. After the dinner was served and he was clearing the plates, he asked if we wanted our salads. Huh? Ok, maybe in Europe they eat their salads after their main entree but we're not over there. I just figured they'd after our bill accordingly. Nope, it was 'served' in a takeout box. If the food was outstanding, I could overlook that. But it wasn't. Two in our party had the veal canneloni. I didn't like the veal filling at all. I had lasagne- where was the cheese? It was a very saucy lasagne and just collapsed in your dish. I want a well baked lasagne that can stand up on the plate or baked in its own dish. No parmo on top as a garnish. On all three plates the pasta was OVERCOOKED. That is the cardinal sin of a chef cooking pasta and that is where the buck stops. Poor pasta, poor recipes, poor service. Sorry I went - they might have been great at one time but are living on their reputation now.

Exceptional service and the food was done very well. I would like to thank my server Brandon Wimberly. He sets the standard for service. Thanks for the great meal!

It is an adventure to get here and you generally have to make reservations; as this place is crazy popular and one of the few good places to eat in the area of the Northshore it is in. They make some really great Italian Creole dishes and the service has always been great. They really are concerned with making sure that you enjoy yourself and their food. The Sal & Judy's products they sell in stores are just pale reflections of how good it is in the restaurant. Everything I've ever had here I very much enjoyed and I've still got many things to still sample on their menu. I'm a bit sad that it is such a challenging trip to get here from the Southshore as I would eat here far more often if it didn't take so long to get here and you have to really plan ahead and definitely MAKE reservations. It is a long way to drive from New Orleans and find out that you can't just drop in and eat so make sure to call ahead!!! It is definitely worth the trip and is a rewarding and tasty experience.

Sal and Judy's is the best restaurant in America...ad I've eaten at enough of them to know. The food is exceptional, the service top-notch. I dream about the oyster-artichoke soup, the Nicholas sauce, calamari, fettuccine Alfredo...what's not to love? No one else comes close. And Sal himself is one extraordinary human being.

Best on the Planet Earth! It's been some time since I have eaten here, as I am out of the area now, but I have eaten about 50 times, and have never had a meal less that spectacular. I will give you some tips. Always consider the specials. You will understand why they call them Specials. Must try: 1. Fettuccine Alfredo 2. Marinated Crab Claws 3. Green Beans 4. Prime Rib. 5. Double or Single cut Rib eye. 6. House Salad. 7. Trout Meuniere, 8. Baked Oysters Cinisi. 9. Your favorite Pasta dish.

This place is one of my favorite restaurants and my family has been coming here for years. Sal is an excellent chef who comes from the kitchen to make a stop at each table in the restaurant. The prices are great for the food you get. I highly recommend the Crab Claws, Shrimp Scampi, Ribeye, and Crabmeat Augratin. However, you will be pleased with any entree or appetizer you choose. The salad is also good too!

Great old line place. Had the eggplant louis which was fried eggplant topped with crab and a pink tomato basil sauce. It was great. Tasty house salad and nice wine list.

My biggest issue is that they will absolutely make NO substitutions or alterations even for someone with serious health/dietary issues. Due to this we rarely eat there as other local restaurants are so much more accommodating. Service impeccable. Restaurant is very noisy.

Best place we could have come across. Eggplant parmigiana was outstanding. Shrimp scampi is awesome. An A+ restaurant. Staff are so friendly and smiling. Don't miss this restaurant if you are in this area.

Beware - Sal & Judy's is normally closed the first couple of weeks in August. The food is terrific. A great place for an anniversary dinner.

Meeting Venue Review: 3.5 stars Small little Italian place in the "blink and you'll miss it" area of Lacombe. The meeting area was just off the main dining room and the staff went out of their way to make sure everything was ok for the event. The space was comfortable and spacious. No complaints about the food from the attendees and there is plenty of parking.

Sal and Judy's is a Northshore fixture that's been serving up some serious Italian cuisine since 1974(!). One certainly sacrifices location (and to some, ambiance), for the unique flavors Sal sends out the kitchen, but I feel he makes up for it in reasonable prices and serving size (everyone took a box home on our last visit). Start with the crab au gratin - easily shared between 2 couples. My fav entrees are the Lasagna, Veal Pane, File Joe V. (not on menu), Brucioloni, and Pork Spedini. I hear the meatballs are not to be missed as well. Enjoy!

This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. My husband brought me here the night he proposed, and we also held our rehearsal dinner here as well as ate here for our first anniversary. The last time we were here, I had their special of redfish with a crab and shrimp sauce and it was, no exaggeration, the best thing I've ever eaten in my life. You do need reservations, but I absolutely recommend this restaurant.

We have dined at Sal n Judy many times. The food and service has always exceeded our expectations. We recently held my Dad's 80th Birthday party in the private room. The staff went above and beyond. The accommodations were fantastic. We had two waiters who attended to our party the entire time. The bar staff was great. We had a cocktail hour first, appetizers, entrees, salads, and desserts. The Italian Feed was fabulous. We had a great spread of food. Everything was served hot and the portions were plentiful and delicious. Thank you Mr. Sal and. Staff for a memorable experience.

Every time we're back home in Louisiana we come to Sal and Judy's. I always have the same thing. I start with the crab claws followed by the trout almandine with green beans. Fabulous. My husband usually tries the specials, always good. Friendly staff make for a very pleasant evening.

I'm amazed at the rave reviews. this restaurant is good, but far from great. there are so many so much better restaurants in this area. The portions are very large, the service fair. And I find it appalling to have a waiter make fun of someone for not drinking in front of their entire party.

I love this place....it's Italian and the one "fine" dining in the area I think. The food is great! It dosent matter what you choose to eat and the owner himself is in the kitchen every night busting his hump. I look forward to eating at Sal and Judy's all the time, it's a great place!

I love having a chance to go to my cousin Sal's restaurant. I've been coming since I was a child. We used to hang out in the kitchen and watch Sal cook. My favorite dish is the Soft Shell Crab Nicholas. Also, you have to have the Marinated Crab Claws. They are the BEST crab claws you will have in your entire lifetime. many of Sal's employees have been working there for ages and the service is outstanding. This place is a must if you are on the Northshore.

I order lasagna pretty much any time it's on a menu, and Sal and Judy's has my favorite lasagna ever! And the portion was huge, which meant I had enough left over for lunch the next day too. My husband and I both loved the Creole Italian salad dressing. We even has some shipped to our apartment in Virginia so that we can enjoy it year round. I definitely plan to go back to Sal and Judy's next time I'm in the area.

My wife and I have been coming here for years and never less than Great! The staff is courteous, knowledgeable and fast. Most staff has worked there for a long time and still love their jobs and it shows. Great wine selection with some very good Italian wines. I love the Spedini, but everything is great!

  • Patrick B.

We've only eaten here twice, but both times, we LOVED it. My wife and I split the soft-shell crab Nicholas the 2 times we went. The Nicholas sauce topping is loaded with crabmeat, shrimp, etc. It's wonderful. The other dishes we tried were the manicotti and brucilonni. They were both wonderful as well. You're sure to get large portions served to you at Sal & Judy's. It doesn't sport a large dining room, but it's more than adequate. You feel like you're in a family-run restaurant when you go here. The staff are nice and they stay busy. There is a rock-filled parking lot. There is a bar with a small sitting area nearby to have a drink while you wait for your table. Unfortunately we couldn't sample any desserts because we were full from our meals!

I have been going here since I was a kid and I have never been disappointed. I have yet to find anything on the menu and some things that aren't even on the menu that I haven't liked. The prices are insanely low for the portions that you get. I have never not left without a box. Sal himself likes to make his rounds in the dining room to talk to his customers.

INCREDIBLE! This is my favorite local restaurant - 1 hr drive from our home! The veal chop is the best & largest we've ever had. Shrimp Scampi is amazing. House salad - great. Service is great-Greg, Mr. Sal & the entire staff do a great job to make sure that you have a great meal and evening. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous, which makes for a wonderful leftover lunch for Sunday. Be sure to make a reserv. Well worth the drive.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
