This place has gone down hill. The last two times we have eaten here it took over hour to get our food. The waitresses had way too many tables to service us. And the the quality of the food was simply poor. After eating here my whole life I think I just had my last meal here.

I had the special of the day - red beans and fried chicken with cole slaw and bread. Absolutely no disappointment here! I was late for lunch so I thought there might be some danger of the chicken being too dry since it was the special. I was pleasantly surprised when, although it did look dry, I tasted the well-seasoned and wonderfully tender chicken which melted in my mouth. I recommend this little place and hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

This is the place to go when you want stuffed crabs. Truly a legendary family owned spot nestled along the river between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

For boiled seafood this place is worth driving to. A dozen boiled crabs here might very well be my last meal. The atmosphere is decidedly country and there is usually a bit of a wait (this place gets packed on weekend nights)

Pretty decent place. Fried catfish was good, but the fried shrimp were just OK (over done, and a bit dry). Fries were good, but the cole slaw was a bit soggy, as if it had been made quite some time ago and left to absorb moisture. Tarter sauce was bland, and the lemons were brown. I can't imagine cutting open a lemon, finding it pretty brown inside, and then serving it to a paying customer!

What a great experience...The restaurant was recommended to us by a tour guide by the name of Stephen from Laura : A Creole Plantation..Hymel's is located about 20 minutes down the road from the Plantation .When you walk in for the first time you can feel the friendly environment..If you are looking to taste the local cat fish, deep fried and boiled shrimp then you will be in heaven...The dessert was delicious...I would recommend the "Pecan Cobbler"...Like I said folks if you really want to experience the south this is the place to stop...

Gumbo: Out of this world. Hushpuppies: Not on the menu, and a must-order for my money! A dozen come in an order. Well worth the hogging. Love this hole-in-the-wall dining establishment on the River Road. Huge double rooms to fit in all the big groups and families who are in on the secret: Hymel's know how to do comfort food. Whenever I go to New Orleans, this is a must-eat!

The reviews referring to how great the "local" fried catfish is are funny. In case you didn't know, Hymel's doesn't even use Louisiana catfish; instead they use basa catfish (which are a cheap alternative flown in from overseas). Kinda sad that a restaurant in Louisiana has to resort to using foreign crap when there's an unlimited supply of Louisiana catfish. So yeah... if you want Louisiana catfish, don't go here.

I went here a lot as a kid for special family occasions. For the last several years, it has been too inconsistent to go to it. When it's good it's fine, but the experience there is sometimes less than it should be. Maybe the food is slow. Maybe the service is bad. Maybe they have a big crowd and run out of silverware. Maybe the only seats available are near the overly loud live band. There are better places within a short drive away.

The parking lot and restaurant was full but we didn't even have to wait. Ordered fried pickles and shared the shrimp boat platter, every bite of everything was AMAZING! Very impressed! The only reason I didn't do five stars was bc a live band was playing and we almost had to yell to hear each other talk.

Great food. They give you plenty to make sure you don't walk out hungry.

Go to place for boiled seafood. Of course, the fried fish is fantastic but when you are craving raw oysters and boiled seafood out here in the country, it's slim pickings. One of those old restaurants that locals love and out of towns always return to. Almost any thing fried, au gratined, plus a decent beer selection and separate bar area. During the week they have great specials including all-you-can-eat. Deducted a star because I ate there last night and shrimp weren't particularly good although not the norm. Tip: The domestic drafts come in a giant glass.

The gang at Hymel's is the best! Been going there for many years when I visit the great State of Louisiana. James really makes everyone feel like a local. I was treated to seeing how a "boil" was done. Hymels combines the best of all - great food, great friends, and cold drinks! One of my favorites is the catfish. I have had catfish in many places - Mississippi, Tennessee, but none as good as Hymels! The fried shrimp are just great. Thursday is open mike night - let the fun begin. This is a must stop place...especially on Thursday night.

Read reviews about 'don't let the outside scare you away' and it definitely didn't. Great local food. I had the crawfish étouffée and it had great flavor with just a touch of spice. Great service. Rachel was our server and she's got a great personality and was very efficient. Went on a Thursday and it was packed for dinner. Can't wait to go back sometime.
