I haven't been in Rocky's since probably about 1992 before my visit yesterday, 06/02/2015. What I remember from my 1992 visit was a warm, friendly place with a down home charm that can only be found in St. Bernard Parish. So when I walked in there yesterday, my biggest concern was that, like all things, time and so called progress would have changed my beloved childhood memory. I am beyond thrilled to announce that my concerns were invalid. The inside has been renovated, I was sort of hoping that the old Street Fighter 2 arcade machine might still be in there. However, the quality of food and the friendly, family oriented customer service was still in tact. I had the veil parm with a meatball on the side, and it was as delicious as I remember. The red gravy is still probably the best in Louisiana, and the portions are still the best value you're going to get in the state. My wife had a fried pork chop which she enjoyed, and my son had a hamburger steak, which he loved so much he felt the need to go over and personally thank the staff. Honestly, the portions here are so amazing that you can easily make this place a one stop for the entire day. The mac and cheese was as delicious as advertised, so make sure you come hungry and ask for that. Everything was perfect, including the owner giving my 11 year old son a couple of bumper stickers after he went up to pay his compliment. Some places don't age well, but Rocky's is still the great 9th ward location I remember it being. There is a reason this place is a New Orleans legend.

Not impressed. I had a fried oyster po boy and a small order of the Mac and cheese. The po boy would've been enough but based on all the reviews on here I had to give the Mac and cheese a try. Both had very little taste, no seasoning. The po boy was on cheap bread that was borderline stale, basic lettuce and tomato like subway, and the fried oysters were way too rubbery. The Mac and cheese was pathetic... It appeared to be thick spaghetti with cheap processed cheese mixed in. Do buy into all the hype. Terrible food

What can I say... It wasn't anything that great to me. Apparently this place is like the best to a lot of people but I guess because it is food I can make at home and that I feel I make it better I cannot see myself coming back to spend this kind of money again. Cafeteria style. Walk up tell the lady what you want from food that is on the line. You can order other things but I felt rushed to make a decision to keep the line moving and I didn't like that at all. Just not my kind of place. To each their own.

Awesome! I had the fried shrimp platter with macaroni and cheese. It was enough for 3 meals and delicious! Eggplant sticks were really good. I love the laid back atmosphere.

Finally visited this place yesterday after many failed attempts. The place was packed. Had to wait in line to place my order. The best word to describe this place is SOLID. Clean, fast, visibly patronized locally, vibrant and huge portions. Just so you'll know... This place a more a cafeteria/ bar, than it is an actual restaurant but clean. You can tell they've been doing this for a while. I kept my order simple; ribs and mac/cheese. I plan to comeback and try other items. The only bad part about this place is that its in Chalmette.

Should have written this up a year ago but in honor of my upcoming NOLA trip, I figured better late than never. This place was recommended to us by co-workers and it was close to our hotel, so we said what the hay... The place is family owned / operated and the atmosphere is really laid back. When we got in it was busier than all hell. To me... A busy place to me says a lot about the food. I ordered the Rib Eye (duh) medium rare with a side of green beans. The rib eye was nicely seasoned, really good (but not great) and the green beans were quite tasty. Will definitely go back next time I'm in the Chalmette / Meraux area. Bottom line... for a tasty, really decent sized rib eye, huge portion of green beans and a bottle of Stella, the cost was a mere $21.50!!! Can't beat that $hit ;-)

Rocky and Carlo's is an institution in more ways than one. It's been there on the highway near the refinery and Chalmette Battlefield for as long as most of us can remember. If you give a New Orleanian a word association psychological test and prompt with "macaroni and cheese", chances are you'll get "Rocky and Carlo's" in response. And finally, if you have fond memories of a school cafeteria (or just wish your memories were fond), it's got a steam table with folks standing behind it ready to plop some lasagna or fried fish or wop salad onto your plate. The fried items, muffelattas, and po-boys are standard New Orleans fare, well-executed with generous portions. That macaroni mentioned above is one of the reasons to come here, a huge heaping plate of long tubular noodles in a surprisingly light cheese sauce with a not-so-light crust of melted cheese. It's a big mass of macaroni, so plan on sharing or taking home some leftovers. If you do insist on eating the whole thing, expect to feel not-so-light yourself. The bar fixes a strong Bloody Mary served in go cups with the classic "Ladies Invited" store policy on the side.

Rocky & Carlo's, a Parish staple. You hear so many amazing things about Rocky's, yet so many people don't like it. Maybe their expectations are too high? Maybe it's not really that good? The world may never know... But I do know that growing up just a few blocks away, and having Rocky's once a month as a child, that I always have and always will love Rocky's. It's not meant to be gourmet blow your mind food. It's set up cafeteria style and is cooked en masse. So you can't expect it to be this life-altering experience. But you CAN expect a TON of pretty decent food, and a family atmosphere. And if you're a Parish native, you can expect to know (or be related to) half the people in the joint at any given time. On to the food... Of course, you HAVE to get the baked macaroni. I always try to get a corner piece (I like the crust), and I always order a side of red gravy AND a side of brown gravy, so I can dip in both. Trust me, get both. And of course, 90% of the time I get the macaroni as part of the veal parm. The veal is nothing special, but again, I don't expect it to be. It's thin cut veal, breaded and baked, with your basic Italian spices - a no risk, yet tasty, recipe. And the veal pairs perfectly with the macaroni and either gravy. Some other good dishes - roast beef po boy (sloppy and delicious), fried chicken, stuffed bell pepper, and green beans. I recently got a stuffed artichoke - not a fan. All that said, I will continue to be a fan of Rocky's and encourage all who have never been to at least try it once. And if it's not your thing, then that's cool too. It's all good in Da Parish. Don't forget to take your cup with you...

Had the MAC n cheese about 3 years ago & thought IT TITALLY STUNK. So I'm not at all clear what the fuss is about at this joint for this otherwise SCRUMPTIOUS FOOD??? DUHA

My fave family-owned Italian restaurant. Rocky & Carlo's serves up signature Italian & New Orleans dishes to happy patrons in St. Bernard Parish. The veal parm is irrefutably on-point, and insiders know to ask for the "Napkins Special" (a veal parm, mashed potatoes & wop salad on garlic bread sandwich). Devotées of this Chalmette institution will gladly spend hours debating the merits of the red vs. brown gravy. (Both are great, and I've heard mixing them is equally yummy.) Adding to its charm, everyone seems to have their own special knowledge of the local landmark & its delectable down-home fare. Bring your friends, your parents or just your lonesome. No matter what--Go once and you'll not only be hooked, you'll be part of the fam.

Rocky & Carlo's is my favorite place to pig out in the whole wide world and quite possibly beyond. That said, let's get the negatives out of the way. Outside of purchasing live bait or the occasional gun show at the Civic Auditorium, it is the only reason anyone should even consider venturing into St. Bernard Parish. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about. It's a bar and a cafeteria that were slapped together long, long ago. It's busy and loud and you often times can't hear yourself chew, much less what the person next to you is saying. Just assume it's "holy sh*t, this is delicious!" and keep that fork a-shovelin'. The aforementioned din isn't something that manifests itself. The place is typically wall-to-wall tummy grumblers and the line to the serving counter and around to the register can occasionally reach the front door. As with any popular dining establishment, the trick is to get there when others don't, so think whatever the 3:40pm CST equivalent to brunch is (lupper?) and plan accordingly. Also, ladies ARE invited! It says so right on the window, as well as on their plastic to-go beverage cups. So, if you're thinking about treating the missus to some grade-A baked macaronis, you're not going to wind up being asked to leave. On account of her gender, anyway. I can't speak for your behavior in public. Kids are also invited, even though they don't advertise it. Keep that on the DL and don't let them sit at the bar. Even if a few of them could pass for a miniature Norm Peterson. Ah, yes. The baked macaronis. Macaroni may be plural, but in this case you're going to get enough to cover the superfluous s. If you're not in the mood for macaronis, there are plenty of other menu options, like a sloppy, gravy-dripping-down-your-elbows roast beef po boy or hearty muffuletta. But you're in the mood for the macaronis. Trust me on this. Now, what you want ATOP your macaronis is entirely up to you. There's brown gravy, like you'd find on the roast beef po boy mentioned earlier in this paragraph, or red gravy, which most civilized people call tomato sauce. There's also a wide array of entrees, including the infamous stuffed peppers that landed them in hot water with the Louisiana Board of Health many moons ago *coughsalmonellacough*, but we won't dwell on an isolated incident. I'm damn big on the veal parmesan. MAMA MIA! *kisses fingertips between bites. BUT (Kim Kardashian sized but) if you happen to be there not-so-late on a Wednesday, by all means, inquire about the brucciloni. Srsly, it's Little Sicily on the Get in Muh Belly tip. Or skip the imaginary trip to that other boot-shaped place all together and getcha some down home Louisiana seafood, dawlin'. You got a hankering for some golden fried shrimps and ersters witcha baked mac? Oh, dey got all dat, too! Not to mention stuffed artichokes, creamy cole slaw ... heck, damn near anything you can spot on the working side of the Plexiglass, you can call yer meal. And I only say "damn near", 'cause some of them pretty little things serving you prolly got gun-toting bfs back home that you ain't gonna want to mess with! I also highly recommend the Wop salad, which is the politically correct name for the Dago salad, if I'm not mistaken. Again, this is the same place that likes to hammer home the point that anyone bearing multiple x chromosomes is welcomed to dine. With that in mind, feel free to call the side dishes whatever you damn well please. I'm fairly certain you're not going to offend anyone behind the counter. Oh, and the Bananas Foster Ice box pie! Not sure if this is a seasonal thing or what, as I've only had it a couple of times. But if they got it, you gotta get it. One of the big perks with any cafeteria-style restaurant is that you pay upfront, gather your own utensils and carry your tray to the table, assuming there are any vacant (good luck with that). This equates to a smaller sense of obligation, as far as gratuities are concerned. At least in my admittedly frugal mind. In short, despite the magnificent portions on your plate(s), you're not (necessarily) looking at an additional 18%. If I'm feeling particularly generous (and before waddling out of this culinary Valhalla, I often am), I'll slip the little lady who took care of me at the counter a couple of bucks to put towards a new pair of shrimp boots. They smile real purty when you do that, camo-wearing bfs notwithstanding. All in all, R&C's is a fantastic place to take your family or a group of friends for lunch or dinner. For tourists in particular, it's light years off the beaten path of French Quarter establishments, where you're bound to pay twice as much for half the grub. Well worth the excursion, should you have the means to get there. As a former resident of the New Orleans area, I try to make it down there every time I'm in town. I'll go so far as to say my trips home feel incomplete whenever that doesn't happen.

My boyfriend and I come here every time we visit New Orleans. He has been coming here for many years for the baked macaroni, which admittedly is among the best I have ever had. This place always has a large selection of home style favorites like baked chicken, stuffed peppers, and hamburger steak along with the standard specialties like poboys and muffalatas. The portions are huge and an easily be shared among two or even three people. The food is consistently good. I would definitely recommend the baked macaroni and the baked chicken because I have had both three times now and have not been disappointed. One thing is for sure we will be back!

  • Sebrina B.

Ok I know people recommend the macaroni and cheese. I just could not do it. It appeared to be straight kraft mac and cheese down to the skinny noodles style. I only eat mac and cheese with elbow macaroni. Period. But their choice of mac and cheese recipes aside, I had fish, corn, cabbage and as an appetizer the fried green beans. Oh my the fried green beans were so delicious and crispy crunchy! They were definitely my favorite. Everything else was good. They have a really diverse but cohesive menu. It is like classic soul dishes from every genre. Italian soul food options like Veal Parmesan and Lasagna. American soul food classics like fried fish and of course some New Orleans classics like po boys and muffaletta. Staff was happy and friendly in spite of a long line. Prices were definitely fair for the mountain of food that you receive. Anything you order is definitely enough for two meals. In fact, if you eat all of what they serve in one sitting, I am going to go ahead and refer you to the Biggest Loser now because you are well on your way to obesity.

After a 20 year hiatus I was treated to my childhood favorite. They did not disappoint. The baked macaroni and veal cutlet topped with red gravy was incredible. Memories of my youth came swimming back just with this visit. I promise not to stay away so long next time.

fried eggplant with red gravy - check. macaroni with brown gravy - check. getting there after 7:30 - not so great cuz they do run out of stuff, but then again they close at 8. but tonight they had butter beans - delicious. not overly seasoned like some places do nowadays. i still love it, prices have gone up but it's still a bargain cuz they give you enough food for two meals.

  • Eddie C.

For many, this question will blow their mind.... when the scruffy lady with the raspy voice ask you "you want red gravy?" ....... just stand back and watch the new folks consider having red sauce poured on top of the absolutely beautiful baked macaroni. If you don't answer her fast enough, she will turn into the red sauce Nazi. She get mad :-) Its a no frills family run business with nothing but comfort food. It has staved off many attempts at closing for good, floods, fires... but no! It slaps away disaster like its a mere fly. Don't come in here looking to eat healthy in any way, your wasting your time if you have a picky eater in your group, probably wont like the presentation or the food touching each other. Yes, its that good. Call ahead though and make sure they are open, sometimes I been burned assuming that.

Was recommended this place by a local since we were visiting on vaction. I found it odd that they had to put "ladies invited" on the front windows. The cafeteria style restaurant was very expensive $45 for 2 meals, we were served on a dirty cafeteria tray and with food encrusted silverware. The server brought us bread with her bare hands that were covered in sauce. NO EMPLOYESS WERE WEARING GLOVES WHEN HANDLING FOOD!!! Huge health code violations. I see now why they have to put ladies invited on the windows the employees glared at customers to an uncomfortable level. In the ladies restroom there were even signs telling women not to fight in the bathroom. Not a place that was inviting or safe after dark.

Wow. What terrible service. It's part of the schtick. The attitude has just stuck for years to the point that people not only expect it but enjoy it and come just for it. Because let's face it, if you're not nearby, there's no point coming here. You can find plate lunches like this of the same or better quality all over. It's ubiquitous, mundane, and pedestrian. Really, the food is sub-par and prices are not the best. It's become an out of the way tourist attraction and a place that folks from the parish can find common ground in childhood memories. Hit up once for the experience. Go to Viccinovich's in the east if you want the same food but better with better service and seating. This place will be a historic landmark sometime. But it's sad to say that when the family goes, so too will it's ironic charm and after that you're left with a pretty mediocre lunch spot.

  • Ann Marie M.

Not so sure what all the hype is about the mac & cheese.. basic mac and cheese. The muffalatta was delicious and the spicy green beans even better! The roast beef poboy- although messy- which is how they're supposed to be - lacked flavor. The portions were HUGE, so you do get your moneies worth. The service, was terrible. If you're not a Chalmattian, you don't get friendly service. True local eatery and all the ambiance legend in its own right. Worth at least 1 try! (Yes, I am also Sicilian like them)

  • Rana F.

I don't get the hype over this place. Went in to have veal Parmesan and Mac & cheese. Both were horribly dry and tasteless. I've had cafeteria food at school that had tasted better. My suggestion is not to waste your money.

This place has never let me down. Not once. Anything you order, and I mean anything, just grab a side of Mac and cheese and prepare to douse it in either red or brown gravy. The Veal is tremendous.

After many months of begging, I finally convinced the kiddo to try this place out. I'm super glad we did, OMGosh the portions are HUGE though...next time we go, we're SPLITTING an entrée, and that would probably still be enough to take home left overs. We ordered a small side of mac and cheese and were split on whether we liked it or not. I liked it, but she didn't, it is definitely different, though with so many other reviewers, I agree, the brown gravy on it was OUTSTANDING! We ordered spaghetti and meatballs and the hamburger steak, holy smokes that ended up being a whole passel of food, enough to feed 4 people and the dog, let alone two. My hamburger steak came with a side of mashed potatoes and corn. I hesitate to say "side" because the potatoes were a mini mountain under my hamburger steak and came doused with debris gravy. The debris gravy, wow, I can't say enough about it, I could have sat there with a bowl of that and some bread and made a meal out of just that, YIPEE that was delicious! My hamburger steak was cooked through and nicely seasoned, I thoroughly enjoyed it there and several hours later for a midnight snack too, even then I could not eat all of it and ended up giving half to the dog, who also agreed it was quite tasty when she begged for more. I was hesitant about my kiddo ordering spaghetti and meatballs here because of the cafeteria style in which they hold everything, but to my chagrin it was just as good as my hamburger steak. The spaghetti itself was not over cooked and the sauce was slightly sweet, but the real winner on that plate were the meatballs, they were succulent. I have read a lot of comments on this site that said something bad about the service they provide, but I did not see any of that, we had excellent service, maybe it was because when I paid my server saw how much of a tip she got before we sat down :). Oh, for those of you not in the know (I know I wasn't) if you leave a tip on your table it goes to the BUS person, not to the person whom you ordered your food from (who IS your server). I just finished eating at a Mexican place tonight, but wish we would have gone here instead, just thinking about it makes me want to go back, of course they are closed now, it is almost 10:30 :).

Okay I order the fried chicken dinner with Mac and Cheese and a Barqs rootbeer. The Barqs rootbeer was in a clear glass with blue labeling and tasted bomb. I was shocked to see a plate with a what seemed to be a whole fried chicken and mountain of mac cheese. I eat as much as I could, shared a delicious meal, over a entertaining discussion with a friends. All in all it was a worth the 20 minutes drive out of the French Quarter.

Fantastic. If you are in Chalmette you have to eat here. Huge servings for a reasonable price. They have specials too that are all awesome. I got a crab cake that was the best I have had in South East Louisiana. Super good. I also got a shrimp boy boy and it was really really good. Usually I say all poboys taste the same and one is just as good as another but in this case, I really could tell how good it was. You should probably get a side of mac and cheese. HUGE and super super good. Reminds you of the childhood kind but better. Must go to place if you are in the area and I would even add it to my list to make trip to go eat at if I never thought i would make it to Chalmette. It is cafeteria style and always busy. cool local atmosphere

I grew up in St. Bernard and frequented Rocky & Carlo's for many years. On a recent visit with family in New Orleans, we decided to make the trek down to "da parish" for a blast from the past. The place has definitely been cleaned up since the storm and the fire. It's actually really nice and clean inside. I would not say that was the case years ago. The urban legend surrounding the cleanliness was that the ladies working the counter would take the po boy bread and wipe under their arms with it. Now mind you no one ever really saw that, but still the story lived on for many years. The service was pretty slow as I remembered. The food overall is very good, but not the best you'll ever have. It's really more about the memories and good times. Although I will have to admit that I adore their macaroni and cheese. My friend's son got the fried chicken and although the breading was good, the meat itself was dry. We also got a shrimp po boy, which was very tasty. Remember that portions are very large so sharing a couple of things is the way to go. Always a fun time so don't miss it when you're in the area.

Definitely not what it use to be! This place was sooo good a few years ago. I'm not sure what happened but we ordered the roast beef po boy and mac and cheese and neither had any seasoning. None at all. I'm not sure what kind of cheese was used on the mac but it didn't taste like anything at all much less cheese. No flavor at all with the roast beef and almost no gravy. My first bite had me wishing I had gone to Parkway for a roast beef debris. I gave it 2 stars because they have Barq's in the bottle and it was cold. If you want a real roast beef and gravy (debris) do yourself a favor and go to Parkway.

Horrible!!! Let me just start by expressing to you how important food is to me VERY IMPORTANT! Not only that but I have been in the food industry for over 8 years 3 years of fine dining and bartending. I've been here twice and its mediocre food, btw there is nothing to eat around here. I just walked in asked where I should place a Togo order and was directed to bar where there are 15yr girls "waiting" on people. I had to ask for a menu after the bartender passed me 5 times because she obviously doesn't know how to consolidate or work efficiently. HELLO I GUESS THATS WHY YOUR 50 working at a mom and pop restaurant. So I continue to sit after 5 more minutes pass by I ask the child behind the bar if I can place an order to go and she doesn't speak she points to the other child and the girl says "she is really busy and the bartender will have to help you.". NO THANK YOU! They have just recently celebrated 50 years because people are desperate and have no respect for time or food. I will never be back there. Literally you walk through a cafeteria line and order your food that is already pre made with a trey like a Luby's, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF FRIED FOOD. It CAN NOT BE THAT HARD!!!!!!! Too busy to help a patron? He the owner who works the cash register needs a bartender and he also has no respect for his customers or he would have walked his happy self over and helped me because he was standing there staring at me for 15 minutes, but he doesn't care either. He has probably never been to a nice restaurant..... DUMB!!! The food is not worth the wait. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME, YOU CAN COOK ALL OF THIS OVER PRICED CARB FOOD AT HOME. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE BLAHHHHH THIS IS MY FIRST REVIEW.... Namaste

It anin't your momma's tomato sauce it is better and I make a great sauce. If you are down in the Parish you have to stop by. We were parked 15 minutes before the place opened and there were 8 other cars waiting for the door to open at 11 am. The portions are huge and cooked to perfection. I had a small oyster and could not eat it all, my friend had the oyster platter and it had at least 3 dozen oysters on it. There Mac and Cheese is just as good as everyone swears by. We had the eggplant fries with tomato sauce and that one makes you want to slap your momma!!!

Love rocky's .The food is awesome and I promise you won't leave hungry. The macaroni and cheese is the best., even thou it's an Italian restaurant, the steak is huge and barely fits on the plate and seasoned well, you don't need steak sauce.

Who the hell closes at eight pm and gives customers coming to the door nasty looks?! The place looks dirty and kind of how you would expect a restaurant in chalmette to look and just how you would expect the staff to act. I will not be returning.

I have heard about Rocky and Carlos's for years, but didn't go until yesterday. The reviews/reputation did not disappoint. My friend and I split the roast beef po-boy and the Wop salad. The dressing on the salad was an excellent home- made Italian. The po-boy was messy like a roast beef po-boy should be, and it was very tasty! Her son got the fried catfish and baked macaroni. The baked macaroni portion took up 3/4ths of the plate. He couldn't finish it. So if you go, go hungry or be prepared to eat leftovers for another meal or two. Can't wait to go back!

If you want to step back in time and get a bellyful of SE Louisiana comfort food, this is the place for you! Rocky & Carlo's looks like a small roadside diner from the outside, but once you go in, you'll see that it's actually a large roadside diner. Step up to the hot food bar and take your pick from their vast assortment. The stuffed pepper was really good, but the real star of the plate was the side of mac & cheese. Holy macaroni, is that stuff good!?! Legit extra long macaroni noodles baked with yummy cheese throughout, crispy and crunchy on top. One of my dining partners had the shrimp po boy. The thing was HUGE, and tasty. You won't leave hungry!

Never got to taste the food. They obviously don't care whether you eat here or not. 20 people standing in line waiting to order, 10 employees standing behind the counter doing absolutely nothing but standing around and talking to each other and clearly not interested in the customers in line. Cashier rudely stated not to talk to him until you placed your order. But it's kinda difficult to place your order when no one will take it. Rather than getting someone to take orders, the cashier walked over to the other employees and just stood there shooting the breeze with them. I've heard the food here is good. I'll never know because I refuse to patronize places who treat their customers so poorly. We walked out. I will not go back.

    I. Am. A. Fan. I was introduced to this place by my cousin and her husband. My initial take upon entering was that of delight. It's a large open space that appeared to be recently renovated. Further investigation revealed that it has in fact been reno'd due to a fire last year. Not overly stuffed with "flare", it's decor is just enough. It is a cafeteria style restaurant. My cousin's husband informed me that we needed to hurry up and figure out what we wanted because his previous experience was that the staff could get grumpy with you for not quickly ordering. We got the following: Oyster Poboy, Shrimp Poboy, Roast beef poboy, mac-n-cheese. Dear Lord! Everything was spectacular. However, the roast beef poboy provided my taste buds with pure heavenly happiness. At first, I rejected the idea of eating a roast beef poboy. It seemed sacrelig since my idea of a poboy is fried seafood. It ended up being love at first bite. It was tremendously messy since they are generous with the brown gravy slathered on the perfect roast beef. I suggest you strap on a bib and prepare to dive face first into this sandwich. The oyster and shrimp poboys did not disappoint either. The mac-n-cheese is a must as well. Don't ask questions and don't worry about calories. Just do it, man!

I have to say, this food is great! When I first went there, I wasn't really sure what it would be like because when I walked in, there was a huge line. But when I waited it took me about 5 minutes for me to get to the front of the line which really made me happy. Once I got to a table, they got the food within less than 3 minutes so this is definitely good service! It was very delicious!

Worth the trip no frills just good Italian food with a touch of Nola flare. If you are from ouut of town it is a sobering drive to the restaurant going through some of the area's hardest hit by Katrina. As for the food the mac and cheese is great home style baked and the veal is just right. the red sauce is good as well these people know what they are doing and do it well. Portions are huge big enough to easily share..We went after the lunch rush good friendly service...

The Po'Boys here were AMAZING. They didn't have real sweet tea, and the service was a tad rough, but the food was soooo good. I will def be back on my next NOLA vist.

My boyfriend took me here the first time I went to New Orleans. He got me the hamburger steak & mac and cheese with brown gravy....and french bread come with this. You could more than likely share a dish but this never seems to happen once we start standing in line. I saw the plate over filled with greasy cheesy amazingness. I have been back twice since and every time get the same thing and walk away feeling like I need to just sleep for 3 days,

This place has the best roast beef po boy I have ever tasted. The first three weeks after I tried it, I was back here getting one almost every day. Needless to say I am completely addicted. The veal parmesan is another amazing dish. and you have to try the Mac n cheese. The servings are large enough to feed at least 2. Thankfully my wife supports my addiction. ;)

What an interesting place. I happened to be in Chalmette for some reason that escapes me, so I decided to give Rocky's a try. I went with a co-worker for lunch who had also never been. As we walked up, a guy who was hanging out outside on a pay phone greeted us and said "what's up guys" as if he knew us our whole life. We entered and got in line. While in line we saw someone we knew and started talking. We told him we had never been to Rocky's before and a woman we assumed was with our friend, said in an amazingly loud shocked voice "you've never been here?" She said it as if we were aliens from another planet. In her world surely everyone had experienced Rocky's. Anyway, we ordered and sat to eat. It was when we sat that we realized the woman who was so shocked wasn't with our friend at all. She was just some random shocked stranger. I ordered the veal parmesan and baked macaroni. It was good. The problem is that they give you enough food for a week. The meal was very filling. The formerly shocked woman came up to us later and asked how we liked it. She was happy to hear that we enjoyed ourselves and we walked outside. Low and behold the same gentleman on the pay phone. Again he stops his obviously important call and asks us if they took care of us. I have no idea who he was or how he stayed on the pay phone for a half hour. Maybe they employ a greeter like at Wal Mart. We left stuffed and happy. The experience was a strange one, but I will definitely come back next time I am around the parish.

Ordered the whole shrimp po boy, let me tell you I thought it was a mistake when they brought it out. It's huge, could feed to grown hungry men. So I ate just half. It was perfect. The flakey bread and seasoned fried shrimp are exactly what I love about a good po boy, all for $12 including the drink. I'll be back!

I think this review is going to be part review of the restaurant and part ode to my Uncle Rocky. You can skip past paragraph two if you don't want to read the latter. The Rock. The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Born in pre-hipster Williamsburg, Brooklyn, he was in WWII and when he got back, settled in Howard Beach, Queens where he still lives (in the home that he built). Despite being in his 80s, he can still make the strongest of us wince with his handshake and I don't know if this is part of his myth, but I believe he also was one of those guys you'd see in photos hanging out on a beam high above the city on a lunch break. He's been known to whip up a seafood feast on Christmas Eve that would make even the most devout Gulf seafood lover a convert. Yeah, Uncle Rocky is a cool guy. So any restaurant with the name Rocky in it has to mean business and I think this place stands up. Don't read the hype because unless you grew up coming here and have a ton of nostalgia for it, you'll be disappointed. Come with an open mind and just go with it. Understand that you will be standing on a long line, wondering if a table will ever open up (it will), waiting for food that at best is good cafeteria food. The mac and cheese on its own is quite good and yes, that's real cheese on there, not that American shit. Personally, I can do without the gravies (red sauce and brown gravy) poured over it. Overkill. The zucchini sticks are good, but are cold within seconds. But... the gravy. Let's discuss. Sicilian Americans call tomato sauce, gravy. Gravy is a thick red sauce that's prepared at the crack of dawn (preferably by a tiny old lady named Josephine or Philomena) and typically is made with pork sausage and bunch of other stuff. Don't ask what the other stuff is because I was never told. So, yeah, Rocky & Carlo's gravy is insanely close to my grandma's. I had to dip my zucchini sticks in it, despite knowing that they cook it with sausage (or some other kind of meat) I didn't really want to think about it, just taste it and see. The WOP salad, while a delight to behold on the menu, was really not that good. It needed more olives. It's romaine, at least. And the dressing is Wishbone or some other substandard dressing and is served in a plastic tub. Remember, just go with it. Don't mind that you just paid so much for a crappy salad. But whatever you do, don't buy the large. Just don't do it. They really do play up the "Ladies Invited" thing and I think that's cute. I probably would have hated this place when I was 20. Not that I'd go back unless it's to bring Mom & Dad when they come to town, because this would be my dad's favorite restaurant in town. And I daresay if Uncle Rocky were to come visit, he'd dig it, too.

There's not much you can say about Rocky's that hasn't been said. It's more institution than restaurant, like Galatoire's. You don't really go there for the food, you go there because it's Rocky's in the Parish. That said the food is decent enough. the mac and cheese is actually quite good. I had fried shrimp and oysters which were so-so. My dining comapanion and I split an order of onion rings which I were the thin cut kind which are not my favorite. You're probably wondering why I'm giving it 3 stars. Well the answer is BECAUSE IT'S ROCKY'S.

  • Alice H.

I really like this place, but so much of it is the cultural experience of Rocky's beyond the food. Take in the scene, the line, your fellow patrons, the staff. Part of the glory of Rocky's is Yat Pride. That, and the insane portions. The mac & cheese here is the real deal. Real macaroni, real cheese, really baked, really gooey. Joi B. and I disagree on the gravy. I always prefer mine smothered with the delicious red gravy. Then again, Overkill is my middle name. (There were already soooo many Dangers in my family!) The veal is ok. No, not the greatest, but you do get an entire calf when you order it, so it's valurific for sure. The stuffed artichokes are pretty darn good too. And do yourself a favor and just get the garlic bread as a side. No, you don't need it. But you won't have room for everything anyway, so get it and pay the quarter for a to-go box for your leftovers (actually, not certain they still charge for to-go boxes, but if they do, pay the damn quarter). The garlic bread here is very buttery and very garlicky - tres yum. The green beans, which may be canned, I'm not sure, are prepared in a tomato sauce with sausage as a significant ingredient in this vegetable dish. The stuffed eggplant is almost all meat too and quite good, but it needs hot sauce to take it where it was meant to go. If you find yourself here on a Wednesday night, skip the veal and go with the brucciloni. It is truly fantastic and the kind of thing that I have never tried to make at home. Maybe I'll remedy that some day, but for now, Wednesdays are the primo Rocky's day for me. One negative is that if you want a beer or a glass of wine, you have to wait at the bar to order it. Wait and wait and wait at the bar. The service seems to kick ass at the food counter and avoid ass (moi?) at the bar. But stick it out. The fried food here cries to be accompanied by a beer; the Creole/Italian dishes cry to be accompanied by wine - better wine than you'll find here actually, but that's life south of the Barracks. For the kids, Barq's red ftw.

Love it. Fried Chicken. Mac-n-cheese. Bam!! Everything is oh so good!! Get gravy for the Mac. Your welcome. This place does NOT disappoint. The long line was crazy. I was getting anxious that we wouldn't find a table, but once we got our food a table opened up. So worth it. I then had an understanding of the long line. I can't even find any faults. 5 stars.

This is the type of place you walk into and think....'we're not in New Orleans anymore.' By this I mean both the people and portion sizes are much, much bigger. I ordered a 'half' oyster po'boy (a foot long) and a 'side' of mac n cheese which could've easily fed two people as main courses (total = $12.50). I wasn't too crazy about the oysters, but I think that's just because I'm not a huge fan of oysters. The mac and cheese, however, was deeeeeelicious. It's that kinda southern mac and cheese that has egg in it, super greasy, and may give you the shits later. Who cares, though! I can't wait to go back and try the fish po'boy and some red beans and rice, even if it comes with a heart attack for dessert....yolo?

I grew up in 'da parish' and this was our favorite restaurant. I am very happy that Rocky & Carlo's not only survived Katrina, but also a fire. The parish just wouldn't be the parish without it! Whether a New Orleans tourist or a close resident, you have to come taste the food here. You will not be leaving hungry.

Had an awesome lunch. Terrific gumbo with just the right kick of spicy deliciousness. Staff was super friendly & gave me a little sample of the shrimp & corn chowder & it was stinking fantastic. I know what I'll have next time & there will be a next time.

I was told to view this place as an icon of the Chalmette community - not so much exceptional food as an exceptional vignette of local flavor and tradition. On that count it hits it out of the park. As for the food, it ranged from old-school cafeteria "meh" (veal cutlets and parmesan) to sublime (mac and cheese that's basic but inspired). I wasn't led astray - the food may be "everyday grub," but the restaurant gives a great reminder of how Creole, Italian and Southern cuisines come together in a real way that's unique to the New Orleans area, and a great reminder of what lunch in the area may have been like a generation (or two or three) ago. Good stuff.

Holy Portion Sizes!!! I stopped in to try this famous mac and cheese and also got an order of the fried zucchini sticks. The mac and cheese was as big as my head and ended up being 3 separate meals for me. It was really buttery and the long tube spaghetti noodles gave it an interesting texture. I really liked the gobs of cheese too. The zucchini sticks were pretty awesome, I'd definitely recommend them. If your starving or haven't eaten in days you need to stop in here. If not, you need to come in for some comfort food.

THE BEST Baked Macaroni EVAR!!!! This is a classic St. Bernard family Restaurant, run by family, so it's a great place to bring your family. There are huge tables so seating 8 is never a problem. Of course they get busy at peak hours, but they are good about getting folks in and out. The line moves pretty quickly so don't be discouraged if there is a line when you walk in, it'll give you time to decide what to order. I usually get a Wop salad, & the baked macaroni with veal Parmesan. Ask for a box at the beginning because there is NO way to finish the HUGE portions that are delivered to your table.

(Overdue review) Best OYSTER PO BOY EVER! I came here with my couchsurfing buddies while I was in NOLA. The restaurant didn't look promising looking from the parking lot, but when we were all surprised just how spacey and lively the place was once we were inside. It was like those children in The Chronicles of Narnia discovering that their closet lead to a wonderland. The buildling = closet; Rocky & Carlo's = the Wonderland. The portions are huge. HUGE. HUUUGE!!!! I want to go back to NOLA again...

All up in here it says: "Ladies Welcome." I wonder...is that strange for women to be invited to dine? This is man food though, just sayin! The best food I had on my trip, no lie! Me: I'm pretty hungry. My mom: Ok, let's not get the whole po boys, we'll just get halfs. Me: Sounds reasonable. I order the shrimp, she orders the catfish variety. Both dressed (blasphemy to get it undressed, mine came with some sort of cocktail sauce/mayo=heaven). Mine comes out first. I think "oh, they must've not heard me...I only wanted the half size." Oh well, we'll take it home for later. My mom's arrives, same portion problem. Then we realize, THIS is the half. Which is more like a sandwich that is approximately a FOOT LONG and 6 inches high. Holy man. If I ate like this as a half portion, I'd easily weigh 500 lbs. Easily. Regardless, these were the best po boys I had in Louisiana! I tried them at many places, and this beat everyone else by a long shot. Crispy, fresh, French bread...fried shrimp, awesome sauce. Mmmmmm. So good. So very, very good. Someone rec'ed that we get the mac 'n cheese, so I ordered a small plate. Again, with the portion problems :) It fed 4 of us. A SMALL. Fed 4. It was DAMN good, too. This place is somewhat cafeteria style...you go up and order from the waitress, then pay...then sit down and they deliver. It's busy, but really fun...and the food is fantastic. The location is sort of out of the way, but it's basically just like the best diner I've ever been to, with the biggest food that's ever been called "half" or "small" in the world. Cheap, too. I think mine came out to about $10 (with drink, tax, tip) and I took some home for later... Best Po Boy. YAY! If you are down in St. Bernard, New Orleans or Chalmette...def make it a destination, and bring your eatin' pants! Ahem, I mean...I'm a lady. I don't have eatin' pants. Oh whatever, yes I do...

this is what mac & cheese is supposed to be... I always get the veal parm, potato salad, onion rings and an iced tea. those onion rings are easily the very best that I've ever had. tommy, the owner, and his family are always there to make sure things go the way he wants them to. drive on down to 'da parish and experience rocky's!

I am from Chalmette, born and bred. I'm also vegan (remarkable, I know). Rocky's macaroni and cheese is basically the only food in the world I'll occasionally let slide. That's how serious it is. It's as awesome as it's always been even though all y'all fancy people like to go there now and there ain't no Mackenzie's down the street to get dessert at.

Wow this local place is pretty damn good. You'll hardly ever get tourists here. All locals. Had the Bruciloni (stuffed steak), veal cutlet, green bean casserole, veal parm, and mac n cheese. Their mac n cheese is supposed to be legendary, and it lives up to its billing. Probably the best mac n cheese i've ever had. they use long thin noodles and they give you a HEAPING side portion with you meal that can actually be a meal itself. The bruciloni was also really good, as was the veal. The veal parm was awesome and their red sauce is full of flavor. I'm not a huge fan of green beans, but their green bean casserole is damn good! Their shrimp po boy is good and HUGE (the small is around 10"). Would love to come back here all the time but at the expense of a larger waistline.

I had lunch here on a Tuesday. I ordered jambalaya, but was told that they only serve it on Fridays (though it wasn't stated on the menu). I instead got a stuffed bell pepper, with sides of broccoli & cauliflower and cabbage. The portions were big, but I was disappointed with how it was served. My food wasn't made fresh; instead, it was all sloppily scooped from a tray onto my plate. That would've been okay, but the worker didn't drain the liquid from the spoon when she got my veggies, so all of my food sat in a pool of vegetable water (yuck). When I sat down to eat, I found that my pepper was not hot, only room-temperature. Since I was on a time limit, I decided to eat it anyway. I was with a group, and some of us were given silverware, while others had to get up and ask for it. I didn't finish my meal, but I didn't expect to since my plate was so full (and sitting in all that veggie water). This could be unrelated, but a short time later my tummy was mighty upset. Final verdict: the place wasn't terrible, but I doubt I'll ever be back.

Much better than I remembered... It had been a while since I had dined here and was impressed by the post-K renovation. Ordering can be tricky, so ask for help! Had the veal parmigiana with cabbage and a salad. Lots of food for the price, but my veal tasted 'old'. They offer a lot of home cooked style food and I'll likely be back to try some more of it. Really wish I could give this experience 3.5 stars!

Anyone who comes to New Orleans, rents a car, and fails to visit Rocky & Carlo's has missed a golden opportunity to visit a unique eatery. It's just a short, easy drive from the FQ. Rocky & Carlo's is a national treasure. Delicious food that looks and tastes like your momma made it (someone's momma did make it). Just go, order a roast beef po-boy, some mac&cheese with red gravy, and wop salad. If you're still hungry (LOL), go back up to the counter and check out the stuffed peppers, lemon chicken, fried ersters, etc. The veal parm looked great too. If you try to order an "italian salad," the girl behind the counter will say "wop salad," so leave your PC hat at home and just order a wop salad like the Yats all do. They even give you a basket of french bread and butter. Now who in god's name has room for bread and butter at this place, I do not know. And just in case you're wondering, "LADIES INVITED"

  • Shannon S.

Wow the main thing that can be said for this place is HUGE portions. People rave about the mac'n cheese here but it isn't my favorite (although it is probably the largest serving anywhere and could feed an entire family). They have multiple selections and rotating daily specials (keep in mind they only have the seafood gumbo on Fridays). It isn't the best food you will ever taste but it might very well be the largest amount of food you ever attempt to eat. A good solid place to eat with interesting local characters so certainly a great unique place to visit!!!

  • Jeff S.

Ideally, New Orleans Yelp exists so visitors can find places like this. If I could grab random tourists (and lazy-butted local friends with cars for that matter) by their lapels and kidnap and drag them out to Chalmette to eat here, I would. Id never be prosecuted, my kidnapping victims would thank me...and even if they were still peeved, they'd be so stuffed that lifting the pen to file the police report would be too dificult. The perfect crime...and community service. Rent a car. $25 at Enterprise, hidden spots abound on the outskirts of the city, and doing what you gotta to get to the places like R&Cs is worth it for all kinds of reasons, main reason, of course is to fill your gut beyond any normal boundaries. And juggle your calendar accordingly as to maximize eatingness pleasure, the journey is best made on Wednesdays or Fridays. Wednesday is brucciloni day. I don't want to digress into the theories and various spellings of brucciloni, that is best covered by Sara Roahens book Gumbo Tales (pretty much the must read book to grasp what and why to eat while here). Friday is crabcake day! Hooray! Rocky and Carlos crabcakes...darn, no adjectives, I wish it was Friday afternoon right now. Oh, jebus, they good. Ordering is a bit confusing, everybody will know whats going on but you...I will share my little trick though- Just keep ordering, just say stuff, dont stop. You should over order, you are going to want them mac and cheese leftovers later. So knowing the portions are huge, and you will not be able to finish your food regardless, don't let that affect you, still order twice what you need. Some sides that I never resist are the eggplant sticksand onion rings (only if you have an army with you, there is no small size for that, just a large...and large is really an understatement on that one.) But, most importantly, Rocky and Carlos has (by a smidge) the best Wop Salad in the area, and considering outside of New Orleans the word isn't really gracing menus too often, possibly makes it the best Wop salad in the world. Its just olive-licious, think a muffaletta for vegetarians, very classic NOLA Italian Creole cuisine. And of course the Mac and Cheese. One of the best traditional Macs in New Orleans (3 muses, Cochon, and the Country Club roll modern style so different). Perfect noodles and it gives you a chance to toss around local nomenclature like red gravy. Red Gravy is New Orleanian for tomato sauce. Its fun to say, and traditionally served on the mac and cheese here, but I get it on the side so I can enjoy all worlds. This is ridiculous, I'm getting a ride there tomorrow, I don't even know if I will make it until then, writing this has my mind stuck on those eggplant sticks. Rocky and Carlos rules. Go. Ill try and make a list of places that make renting a car while visiting NOLA worthwhile and this is right on top.

R&C's is heavily hyped. That's it. That's the best thing about the restaurant; it's reputation. The food is horrible. The mac & cheese everyone talks about is horrendous! Anyone who thinks this is good food has never had a decent meal in their lives. There are much better places to eat in St. Bernard Parish than this place. They've been surviving off of the reputation given to them by people who don't know what they are talking about. A cafeteria has better food. Do yourself a favor and eat somewhere else.

OMG. The portions at this place are extraordinarily huge! I recommend getting the small macaroni and cheese (so cheesy) and splitting it with two people. Po-Boys to be ordered in halves because a whole would feed you the whole day. I don't get the "Ladies Welcome" slogan everywhere and was too hungry to ask anyone the story behind it. The servers are super nice and try their best to help you order via cafeteria style. The place is pretty big and good for groups, which is good because sharing food is a must.

best old school "new orleans" fare in the area, classic port city diner just outside the port of saint bernard/chalmette slips, huge platters, cheap prices, a classic

I had heard of this place for years and finally tried it for lunch today. It was everything I expected. The reviews are right on target. Excellent food, great prices, huge portions, very clean, friendly people, and worth the drive. I drove from Uptown New Orleans and got there in a little over 15 minutes. I had the roast beef Po-Boy and agree with others that it is better than Mahony's Po-Boy Shop or Parkway Bakery and Tavern. The roast bee was very tender and flavorful with lots of gravy on classic french bread. I added Provolone cheese and creole mustard for good measure. Excellent! And of course, I had to try the baked macaroni and cheese. It is wonderful! They make it with Bucatini which is a thick, hollow spaghetti noodle. Add to that a lot of cheese and bake it off for a good crust. I had my plain, but you can get it with gravy (red sauce) ladled on top; which a lot of people were eating. And if you get it paired with a couple of large meatballs you will be in heaven. As many people say, the portions are huge! I ordered the small and received an 8" oblong plate piled high for $3.00. It must have been a pound of macaroni and cheese! I will definitely go back so I can work my way through the menu. Everything looked good; especially the fried chicken, fried shrimp, fried oysters, stuffed bell peppers, and Spumoni cheese cake. On my return I will be careful to split some dishes with friends.

Located outside New Orleans in a neighborhood called St. Bernard Parish or (Da Parish for short), this place is a real experience, Deli style service of local and Italian cooking. This is Eldon and Kates new favorite place, and they are very big on the mac and cheese and Eldon likes the Veal Parm. The breaded pork chop is cooked to perfection he says. Very inexpensive and you won't leave hungry.

The line on a Saturday at noon was realllly long, so I would recommend not going between 12 and 1. Lem'me take a sec and breakdown some of the side dishes that you might miss otherwise: - Green beans: Stewed with crushed tomatoes and sliced sausage. Phenomenal. - Eggplant dressing: Mashed eggplant, stuffing mix, with sauteed ground beef, sausage or seafood. You must order this if you've never had it. Amazing. - Mac and Cheese: Rather than 1" macaroni noodles, these are 4-6" noodles, and its baked. Must have. - Fried Eggplant: Served in a french fry style, except the pile of eggplant fried is smothered in grated Parmesan cheese and served with a cup of marinara suace. Are you kidding me? This is the best appetizer I've ever had. - The roast beef poboy: 1/8" thick sliced hot roast beef smothered in gravy. Dressed means lettuce, tomato etc. Get it dressed, its awesome. - White Beans and Rice: Simmered/stewed white beans cooked with onion and ham over white rice. This was a sleeper dish I didn't expect much from but was the underdog winner. Order it if they have it when you visit. - Seafood (Shrimp, oysters, fish) - Made to order when you order it. Catfish is awesome as everything else. - Fried Chicken - is superb but made to order. Expect a 20 minute wait, its worth it if you can.

This place is pretty amazing, a legit Chamlmattian hang out spot, with some really good ole amazing home-style Sicilian and Creole dishes. A friend of mine brought me here for lunch the other day so I could get a real taste of the area. She ended up getting their famous Veil Parmesan, Mac and Cheese, and smoked sausage and shrimp po-boys.... I couldn't believe how much food she ordered but I was so happy!! Everything tasted like it was made right there and then, and the dishes were pretty decently sized. The decor is pretty cute, looks like an old school cafeteria but with charm. The only thing that really was throwing me off were the "Ladies Invited since 1964" sign.... like really??? are those still necessary, because they almost made me not want to eat there.... just sayin'

FAVORITE RESTAURANT EVER! We have to visit every time we come to New Orleans, no doubt about it. The portion sizes are insane. If you are with another person, you should definitely share and you will probably still have leftovers. The only thing we have ever tried there is the veal cutlets and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese is to die for. We didn't even want to order anything else because of how good the combination is together. Also, the marinara mixed in with the mac and cheese is phenomenal. Everyone should try this at least once in their life!

If you find yourself in St. Bernard Parish, this is a must stop. The long noodle mac-n-cheese is the best around. Huge portions. Ladies invited!

If your ever near the area, make sure your plans include a visit to Rocky's! Growing up in Chalmette, it's a household name. I LOVE the Mac n cheese and veal cutlet! If your craving poboys, you can't beat theirs! Be prepared to either split your dish, or take some home(because your not going to want give any away). Miss it so much!

Come hungry! Seriously, the portions they serve here are probably sufficient to feed a third world family of 4 for a week. And the food is good. I usually get the macaroni and cheese with red gravy whenever I go here. It is phenomenal. I have a hard time not trying to eat all of it, despite the fact that I would probably have to be hauled out in a wheelbarrow if I DID manage to finish it. The normal "scoop" of macaroni and cheese they give you pretty well covers an oval dinner plate, and is a good three inches high. And this is your SIDE dish. They have a pretty good selection here, as well. Usually you can choose from some combination of stuffed peppers or artichokes, t-bone steak, baked chicken, hamburger steak; your normal good, filling diner food. They also have very good muffuletta, roast beef po-boys, fried shrimp po-boys, and other N'awlins favorites. So, if you're traveling in or through Chalmette, try to make time to stop here. You won't be disappointed.

I had the legendary mac and cheese today. It was legendary. The portions are very large. Even a small is very large. It is every day comfort food. No frills. Nice people.

Amazing food and friendly people! I love the relaxed atmosphere with cafeteria-style ordering. Don't miss the stuffed bell pepper or the mac and cheese. Their portions are generous and you will STUFF yourself. Mmmmm. The gumbo is also not to miss. Can't praise this place enough! This is NOLA at it's finest. Or Chalmette at it's finest...geniune, down home, unhealthy. Wish there were a place like this in Austin! :-)

We came down to da Parish to volunteer for the St. Bernard Project. We tried a variety of the greasy spoon places available. Rocky & Carlos stands out. HUGE portions! The mac & cheese is enormous -- even a "side" can feed 2. I had a shrimp po'boy, and it's basically 2 sandwiches. And it was *fresh*. Highly recommended!

    (5)
  • Dave Z.

Had a stuffed pepper. Very good. The mac and cheese was very tasty and the portion was very generous. The same for the cole slaw. The po-boy halves could easily feed two people.

Classic! Absolutely Classic! Extremely out of the way, but extremely worth it. EVERYTHING IS GOOD! The main problem with this place is its location (very far), but if you feel like taking an adventure to St. Bernard Parrish, Babe, then this is your spot. Great for lunch and dinner. Expect to spend about $12 per person and get about two portions worth of food compared to the OP. Make sure and choose your time of entry wisely because this place gets packed up real fast and sometimes has nowhere to sit...you can sit at the bar if there is nowhere else. And if the line to order is too long, have your buddy wait in line & put $3 in the video poker and become Louisiana's next millionaire. Baked Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Mac, Oysters, its all good!

I don't....I don't get it, guys. and I know, this is like a huge institution in da parish. But I'm not from the parish, nor have a I ever driven a cherry-red camara, brah... Okay, those were cheap shots. I genuinely appreciate the cultural significance of this establishment, but I fear it may not be for me. I went with a fine band of new friends, some skilled champions. I've heard that they have conquered entire servings in one sitting. We approached the counter, and i began to drag my heels. I was overwhelmed and a touch confused by the smorgasbord before me- i had not been warned. My dear friend decided for me, I would have the veal. Our servers were kind, if a little disorganized, but i think that's part of the charm. I recieved, for 12 dollars, a bottle of sweet tea, and a plate heaped with macaroni and cheese, and what i was told was "veal with red gravy". The portions are enormous. But I'm not huge on huge portions. The thing is, I don't like to go out for things i think I could have made easily. The mac and cheese, while in ample supply was good, not great. I'd eat it if hungry, but I wouldn't go out of my way to purchase some. I think my problem really lies with the "veal." Hard, breaded discs of some meat-like substance, advertised as "veal". I recognize this preparation from my highschool cafeteria- which isn't nearly as negative as a review as it sounds. I ater there often in high school (we were forced to buy a meal plan) and i would by no means call it gross-- well, not always. But yea, the "veal" must have been hastily deep-friend and then tossed in to soak in the red gravy. And maybe it's really because I read a blog entry about how veal gets tenderized...before it's passed on from this life... and maybe that was my issue. Either way, I'm giving you 3 stars, Rocky&Carlos, (when right now, you deserve 2) because maybe i just ordered the wrong thing, and maybe I'm a wannabe-foodie-snob, and mostly, because I'm afraid that one day, my tiny fuel-efficient car will stall out and be surrounded by a group of angry chalmette loyalists who will push it onto it's side with me inside, thus spilling my tall nonfat iced mocha with and extra shot all over my skinny jeans. I'm going to go back and try something else, and then we'll see.

I haven't had Rocky and Carlo's in years, but from what I hear nothing has changed. From what I understand all of their food is delicious, but I've never made it past the veal parm with baked macaroni. Friggin MASSIVE portion of some of the most delicious artery clogging food you will ever enjoy. I would recommend it to anyone if they were gonna be in the area, but honestly not a lot of people are ever gonna be in the Chalmette area unless they live there, in which case they already know about this place. Unfortunately for me, I also am never in the Chalmette area. It's a long ass drive for me and I don't have a car capable of making it. So I must do without, and attempt my own rendition of the veal parm with macaroni. I can actually make a pretty solid imitation of it, except I always make my sauce spicy and theirs is very sweet. Regardless, I have to thank this place for introducing me to the concept of veal parm over mac and cheese - never would have thought of it myself.

I give this place 4 stars for food. Good but not great. However, if you are really hungry, this is the place to go. A small portion of macaroni and cheese weighs (no lie) about 5 lbs. Rocky & Carlo's gets 5 stars for the entertainment you get just being a customer. I've never been here when I didn't get to know the people immediately ahead or behind me in line. The service staff is like your family (in a good way) and the general chaos (again in a good way) swirling around if you are there at the dinner hour say on a Friday night is better than going to a movie! Oh! And since the hurricanes, the bathrooms (at least the Ladies...I'm not sure about the Men's but probably that too) have been remodeled and are totally spiffed up and clean clean clean. And i don't know why, but their motto "Ladies Invited" just makes me smile every time I see it. I love this place!

good, old-fashioned italian and new orleans comfort food. the best shrimp poboy and shredded onion rings youll ever have. real baked macaroni and cheese, the most amazing veal cutlet. everything is amazing here. just make sure you wear loose fitting pants, because you will leave stuffed!!!

Totally over-rated in my opinion. Sure the Mac and Cheese is good but it's not the best I ever had. This is an average restaurant, average food, average service, etc. If all you base your opinion on is serving size then you will leave very happy. Otherwise you'll leave wondering what all the hype is about.

Horrible food the service is so bad. If you dont know where to go to order or what to order you get looked at like an idiot. I went once with someone that "knew how to order" and it was bad. MAC AND CHEESE MAC AND CHEESE MAC AND CHEESE MAC AND CHEESE. I dont care if you have good mac and cheese. Its not that hard to make a good mac and cheese in order for me to go to a restaurant again you have to deliver a great meal all around not just a mediocre mac and cheese. Gemme a break but what do you expect.

This was my first visit here, I was taking a friend from Texas to visit the Chamette Battleground and as this was onroute there thought she would enjoy this busy place. We stood on line and watched others order and pay after which we decided to have one portion of Mac n cheese between us. We thoroughly enjoyed our food and looking around the establishment I could see only empty plates. I would recommend this eating place to anyone going for a visit to the battleground as it is only just down the road. Will I be back, you can bet your life I will

Rocky's is a staple in St. Bernard. I grew up in the Parish, and it was where we ate "on special occasions". Now that I'm an adult and I work here, I go to Rocky's all the time - for take-out, for business lunches, just because! There is something for everyone and the portions are great for the price. You can even eat healthy - I highly recommend the baked chicken which is baked with veggies and is a meal in-and-of itself - even without a side dish. Excellent!

  • Jen S.

I have been eating at this restaurant as long as I can remember when Rocky used to sit behind the register and ring up orders. The food is very typical New Orleans and to die for!!!! The prices are perfect and leftovers are inevitable. In my meat eating days, I used to have the roast beef po boy..... Now I have a shrimp po boy, dressed with brown gravy. ALWAYS get a side of baked macaroni. (They must make their own because the noodles- I can not find anywhere!) And although the wop salad is not politically correct, the flavors are so strong and crunchy... its also a must taste if you love olives ;) Needless to say... Its worth the drive to "The Parish".

Another of those local new orleans neighborhood joints, that give creedance to they saying, "New Orleans is a city with a thousand restaurants and only one menu.", but it sure is a good menu isn't it? I suggest the veal with mac and cheese.

My half po boy was two full sandwiches loaded with nice lean roast beef and the sloppiest gravy imaginable. Delicious. Tried the intriguing neopolitan cheesecake. It has bits of that dried fruitcake fruit in it. Very pretty to photo, didn't like the taste so much, but I was in a food coma after the po boy so I wouldn't trust my judgment here. The macaroni is pretty tasty, too.

There are a few places in this world, where you have got to go before you die. Rocky's is one of them, & I'm pretty picky about my food. Mac & cheese, veal parm. , roast beef poboys, & shrimp poboys are all my favs. You will get huge helpings, so watch out. Go hungry. Can't go wrong here.

This place is an instution in St Bernard parish. Rockys is a place to go if youre really hungry and would like to eat some really good down home cooking and PLENTY of it too. The portions are always huge and the prices wont drain your wallet either. I highly recommend a trip to Chalmette to come treat yourself to some really great cooking at Rocky and Carlos:)

BIG local food for BIG local customers. Famous for their long cheesy macaroni, red sauce, and po-boys. I had a great oyster po-boy, certainly top notch, and very fairly priced at $8 for a "half", which was by any measure a "whole" sandwich. If you're in the Ninth near Arabi, it's worth a stop to check out this local institution.

arrived at Rocky & Carlo's on Thursday evening. we were a little anxious to go in from the stares we were getting in the parking area. reluctantly we went in. when we entered, more staring. ::shrug:: after waiting in the line for what seemed like an hour, for our family of four we ordered. Shrimp/Oyster Po Boy:GENEROUS...HUGE....HUMONGOUS excellent chicken dinner:breast, wing, thigh, leg some of the best fried chicken i've ever tasted french fries: generous portion COOKED FRESH! hot and crispy... red beans and rice: huge portion decent .not the best, but better than any i've eaten in TX(excluding mine ;) mac and cheese: not really "macaroni" pasta... novel and had potential....wish it had more "flavor". "wop" salad: for the record i hate that term! loved the green olives they use TBone Steak: HUGE smothered in butter and parsley....tasted like it was cooked from frozen state or thawed quickly than cooked. way too much butter for my liking. i don't think we understood the ordering process or they understood us, as i think we were charged for our sides:beans and rice, salad and macaroni A La Carte...we assumed the Steak Dinner and Chicken Dinner came with two sides, and the Po Boy came with one side....we were charged a hefty penny....oh well. i'm glad we did not give in to the regulars and we went in. there was a super nice guy that took our order and served us. wish i could remember his name.

After a long day of rebuilding homes for St. Bernard's Project, the food at this restaurant couldn't have tasted better. We went here on a recommendation from a friend who said the baked macaroni and cheese was to die for...and she was right. I went with a group of four people and we all split the small order of mac and cheese, just to give you an idea of how big their portions are. My mom and I split the 1/2 Roast Beef Po Boy and could hardly finish it. It was all really, really good food for pretty cheap, too.

Very laid back, very good home-southern style food. It's cafeteria style food. You walk up and make your order (it's really hard to pick what you want because everything looks so good) and they will bring it out to you. Very large portions of food! The cups they put your drinks in are plastic so you get to keep them haha. There are to-go boxes by the door, and trust me you will need them.

The best shrimp po-boy, or roast beef you will find! Have been going for years, also the you have to try the veal and the baked macaroni. Looks deceiving on the outside but you should try it.

I think I was about 6 years old when I first ate at Rocky and Carlos. I had a plate of pasta and sauce. Some of it was cold and some of it was warm. "How could you take us to a place like this," I exclaimed to my dad. I've been back many times since then, and I've changed my opinion (and I never had that multi-temperature problem again). For 40 years locals have waited in line for this food with good reason, it has a homemade quality you wont find anywhere else but your mama's kitchen. If you want to dive right into the culture of St. Bernard Parish, this is the place. I love the big retro "Ladies Invited" sign outside.

I had heard about Rocky and Carlo's for quite some time but unfortunately never got a chance to visit till today. As fellow Yelper Stan would say R&C is located down in the Parish on St. Bernard across from the refinery in an unsuspecting building. Quite large inside and set up cafeteria style we spent a few minutes trying to figure out the menu. We both had pretty much figured out what entrees we wanted when we stepped up to order but couldnt figure out what sides came with what. I actually felt like the soup nazi episode of Seinfeld when trying to get our order in! We settled on my favorite veal parm and a roast beef po-boy with an order of eggplant sticks, fries and coleslaw. As others have mentioned the portions are ginormous! I actually noticed a couple next to us get take out boxs when their order showed and they immediately scooped half of their order to take home later. The eggplant sticks were very good but a little bland but served with some of the best marinara I think I've had at a restaurant. My partner really enjoyed the cole slaw that was thinly shredded and seasoned perfectly. My veal was very moist and tender but woulda been much better served with spagetti, my partner enjoyed her roast beef although I dont believe its a good as Parkways. Although the po-boy was flavorfull there was not alot of roast beef but the bread which is Binder bread was very good. Binder bread is a little chewy and less flaky tham Liedemheimer but very good representation of french bread Our bill was very reasonable for the price we paid and we ended up bringing a substantial amount of food home with us, half a po-boy and a veal cutlet some french bread and eggplant sticks with cole slaw. If you happen to ever be anywhere near the Parish then by all means get your happy crack down to R&C to try some of this good grub, just figure out what to order before you get up the line, lol..

A trip to the parish is never complete without a meal at Rocky and Carlos. I love how they've cleaned up the place, the food is still as abundant and wonderful as ever. During my last trip (Mardi Gras 09), i finally deviated from my usual and ordered a hamburger steak with onions and baked macaroni. it was DIVINE!!!!!. I now have a new favourite! Make sure you get there to avoid the lunch and dinner rush, otherwise, be prepared to wait in line as you smell the aromatic italian food. But it's ok though, it's always fun to watch the ladies scooping up yummy food.

My last proper meal in Saint Bernard this time around came from Rocky & Carlo-- a shrimp po-boy, a side of macaroni and cheese, and a bottle of sweet tea. The shrimp themselves were good, but otherwise the best part was the tea. Which is not to say that anything was bad; I've just had better, multiple times. However, what you do get are HUGE freaking portions. The aforementioned meal cost all of $10.25, and it could have fed two people. Rocky & Carlo's (home of the Wop Salad, I shit you not) proudly proclaims "Ladies Invited" everywhere their name is printed, presumably because there's some question about the matter...? Regardless, ladies are definitely welcome, as I happened to see quite a few, sizes small to extra-extra large. This may owe to the large portions... did I mention that you get a LOT of food? Another note-- this place is very close to the refinery, which means that can get busy. Busy enough to warrant several traffic cops to direct traffic coming in and out. Yowza. If you're in Saint Bernard Parish, it's worth stopping in, especially if you're hungry, as there aren't a whole lot of jaw-dropping places. If you're in New Orleans, as the vast majority of visitors will be, don't bother.

well i have to say that it looked like a lot of people like the food. my boyfriend who is from the area had heard a lot of good things about the place. yesterday we were in the area and thought we would try it out. we had a time finding a parking place. when we walk in there is a line a cafeteria line. i decided on oysters and french fries and he gets veal parmesan with eggplant dressing. i walk up and tell the lady what i want. i ask her can i get an order of onion rings instead of fries, she says NO very short tempered like. only a few seconds later my plate it out. i knew right then i was not going to like my food. well e find a spot to eat so i try my oyster its cold and hard with no flavor. i let my bf taste it and he agrees with me. he pretty much did not like his either. he let me try the eggplant dressing and all i tasted was hamber meat and once again no flavor. he said his food was cold also. that did have good cold coke. and i did enjoy the scenery and watching the people. maybe i should have got the mac cheese. we were disappointed and our disappointment cost over $30.00 for lunch.

Like Chelsea, my husband and I were referred to Rocky and Carlo's while working with the St. Bernard's Project. It was a schlep, but well worth it! We went in and the place was packed with local regulars, mostly from the two gas refineries down the road - good sign #1. We asked a few people inside for recommendations of what was good off the small menu, and literally everyone we asked said everything was good (and no one was a first-timer) - good sign #2. I had the roast beef po boy, and the husband had the fried chicken with mac and cheese (needless to say, we had leftovers). Hands down, the best meal we had while visiting the New Orleans area, and we had some kickass meals during our trip (notice I didn't say healthiest, but hey, we were doing construction). It was about $30 total for our lunch including drinks, so it's not super cheap but reasonably price for the amount and quality. On one hand it'd be nice to live nearby to be able to go there again, on the other hand if we were nearby we'd probably need a cardiologist from all the good eats. If you have a car and are in the area, GO!

Whatever you do, don't eye the kitchen too much. I know it's tempting, but just don't do it. The food here is served cafeteria style in giant portions, and they'll put red or brown gravy on anything (which i reccomend. Especially the baked macaroni- soooo good with brown gravy.). Some items ahve too much green bell pepper for my tastes, but that's the worst i can say. The bloated, extremely pleased stomach you'll be rubbing after you eat will make you forget about the kitchen. Totally worth the trip out to the parish.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
