I first visited Freddy's in San Antonio, lured in by their promise of the grand poobah of cold desserts - the frozen custard. Much more than ice cream, the custard's inclusion of egg creates a more refined final product and one with a better mouthfeel, as well. The custard wasn't as good as I ate in Milwaukee while in my youth, but was pretty good, especially given the lack of other options. After moving to Wichita, Freddy's base of operations, I feel compelled to give them another shot. They seem on par with Spangles in terms of audience and quality of food, so I'm going to compare them as such. I'm going to let you know right now that there are copious amounts of better burger options in the city. The word "steakburger" is stupid and a means to deceive customers. Steaks are held in high regard because they're a solid hunk of beef that has a certain distribution of fat. Hamburger, whether it came from a whole steak or trimmings, tastes the same, and benefits from being able to have as much or as little extra fat added to obtain a certain ratio, and it can do so cheaply and easily. Of course, the meat-to-fat ratio doesn't really mean much when you take the patty and flatten the life out of it on the griddle, but it does result in a very thin patty that was unsurprisingly dry. I liked the Claussen-like Sandwich Stackers used as the pickle, and the standard mustard and onion accoutrement definitely placed it below what even Spangles can provide. I admit I didn't expect much out of the "Freddy's Style" Chicago Dog, but I was pleased to see that the Vienna dog was dragged through the garden properly with the exception of the poppy seed bun, which was replaced by an odd Texas toast-hot dog bun hybrid that was probably developed so the diners wouldn't take a bite and have a mess on their hands. I wouldn't take this dog to Chicaco, but it's nice to have a rather close approximation in a city where it would otherwise be unavailable. If fries are going to be frozen, then it stops being about the taste of the potato and more about the quality of the frying. Freddy's recognizes this, and uses a shoestring fry that is so thin that there's nothing but the crispy exterior. They also use a proprietary seasoning of paprika, salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder, sugar, and other spices to jazz up the fries a little more, and I like that, too, though it makes my fingers pretty greasy. Unexpectedly, a burger place is more successful in the regional cuisines they emulate rather than their flagship product. I can go to three thousand other burger places in Wichita, most of which would present a better burger, but how many places can I visit to get a Chicago dog and custard? Spangles may have a better burger, but I prefer the other things Freddy's has to offer.

In the magically delicious world of cholesterol and glucose there is a hill as tall as a sumo-wrestler's stomach. Perched atop this navel's valley, there sits a king who watches over his domain, carefully scrutinizing each drop of grease that filters from his subject's deep fryers. Though he may seem a foreboding figure, this King wears not a golden crown, nor an emblazoned yellow M; he does not order his subjects to saunter on roller-skates to feed other starving denizens, nor does he attempt to mask his prized food products as healthy roasted sandwiches. No, King Freddy wears a cloak streaked with red and white. He offers up a unique menu of steak burgers (the offspring of a Chicago-Philly steak union), onion rings and hot dogs. His avant-gaurde french fries are as thin and golden as each strand of Rapunzel's hair. The difference is, these fries are not mushy, but crunchy. They do not drip grease, but rather glisten under the soft fluorescence of Freddy's restaurant's lights. Seasoned with a secretive blend of spices and just a dash of salt, these fries are perfection, caught somewhere between a shoestring and a lock of hair. Any fry connoisseur must try these to fully understand what thin, not whimpy, means. And for a meal, King Freddy himself prefers the veggie burger. Sure this patty appears typical: seared to a dark brown on the outside and a little too circular to have been hand cut. But neither of these detracts from what lies within. One cut of the knife, or a chomp of the jaw, ensures a spillage of golden corn kernels and black beans. The moist burger quickly disintegrates into a loosely oblong form as it spills out the backside of the perfectly buttered buns. At the bottom of this tasty stack lies a bed of shredded lettuce coated in the King's special sauce - a little too acidic and serenely sweet to be tartar but just pink enough to make one suspect it's some combination of catsup and mayonnaise. But no meal, as the King commands, is complete without a dish of custard. He won't bother you with the alleged benefits of consuming dairy after a lipid-laden meal, telling you tales of enzymes consuming fats before your digestive system gets the chance. He'll just beckon you back to his red and silver ordering counter for you to obtain a cup of chocolate and vanilla custard - so creamy, smooth and dense that it needs no amendments. The cocoa flavor oozes from the pudding/ice cream hybrid, while the vanilla tastes vaguely of sugar but more so of its namesake bean. If you're an idiot (the author of this note notwithstanding) you'll insult your smooth, matted custard by covering it in marshmallow sauce and cookie dough, which while delicious, only detract from the loving embrace of unalloyed custard as it seeps through your teeth, over your taste buds and inevitably dribbles down your chin.

A group of us came in to eat around 9pm on 8/29/13. We were the last ones out and Kayla was awesome and treated us with so much love. (one friend decided to take a picture with her because of how awesome she was). The food was amazing. We were starving and it came out quick. The guy that called our number out over the mic has a voice you would say belongs in a movie trailer. Great food. Will be back!

A "steakburger" is defined as a hamburger that is made from leaner cuts of beef than a normal hamburger. Think of it like the difference between a good single malt Scotch and a blended Scotch whiskey. Just like I enjoy drinking a single malt I occasionally enjoy a good "steakburger". But I also enjoy the mix of beef and fat flavor in a hamburger just like I do the flavor of a blended Scotch whiskey. What I am trying to say is that both are good and it all depends what you are in the mood for. Everything that Freddy's serves is good from the "steakburger" to the fries right down to the custard. I always order the #1 combo which is an Freddy's Original Double served with cheese, fries, and a drink. I like "Original" which is mustard, onions, and pickles. The pickles are dill pickle slices and the onions are raw. If you enjoy shoestring fries than you won't be disappointed with what Freddy's is serving. The seasoning for the fries is so good that it is also sold by the container. Although don't be tempted to add more seasoning from the container in the counter when you pick up your order. They season the fries just to the point that anymore is overpowering. Fry Sauce is available and I am not a fan, instead I prefer Heinz ketchup which is available at the condiment area. I don't always get custard but when I do I like a concrete which is similar to a DQ Blizzard that is made with custard. The outside decor would make you expect and 50's diner feel on the inside but that is not quite what you get. What you do get is a clean eating space with plenty of booths. You can also sit outside in those rare Kansas days where it is not too hot and/or windy. The staff is always very friendly and what has always impresses me is if someone sees you standing around without food they ask if they can help you.

This place is awesome! Best frozen custard ever! I'm from out of town and the cashier at front totally recommended the best combo and hooked it up on the toppings, great!

Every time I'm in Wichita, I have to get some Freddy's! Living in the UK, you can't get a good burger for the equivalent of less than 10 bucks. Call me soft, but I feel like I have to get the CA burger! I'm from California and it's their only burger with actual veggies. And I do love their fries. I'm not much for soft in the center fries unless they are seasoned. I love Freddy's super thin shoe string fries because they're done quick, extra crispy, and they're still good the next day! Which can't be sad about most fast food french fries!

I've only ever had the steakburgers (regular and california style). I'd recommend ordering a double if you want the amount of food you're used to getting in a "regular" burger somewhere else, because the patties tend to be a bit thin (in size...not calories!). The custard is great, and they serve it in many ways, which is a plus. The staff is helpful and friendly. I like the casual atmosphere. Picking your own seats and getting your own drinks is a plus for me. My favorite are the skinny, deli-style french fries which are the best I've had anywhere (except maybe the Uptown Bistro in Oldtown)! I'm not a french fry person, but I'll eat these any time. Good for a quick and casual lunch.

This place is a nice break from ordinary fast food joints. While I'm no fan of the '60s' era theme, they do it nicely in their decoration. The food is great, some of the better hot dogs I've ever had, and their chicken strips are awesome pretty good. Where Freddy's shines though are their french fries and their concretes. The french fries are by far the best I've ever had, anywhere. I highly recommend them. Their concretes are also very unique. They taste slightly different than ice cream, in a much smoother, better way. The coffee flavoured concrete is my favourite. The service is fast and cheap, and it's easily one of my favourite places to go for a quick lunch.

Put this one under the catagory of guilty pleasure. This is a slice of small town americana. Great flat top burgers will all the grease you could possibly need. Fries are thin and crispy. Usually just get the steakburger so I can say much about the other items on the menu but this place rocks, just make sure you spend an extra 45 minutes at the gym.

Eh.. This place is kinda like a lower end version of Shake Shack Burgers. Freddy's has a diner style vibe and serves steak burgers, pies, frozen custard, shakes, more. Their burgers aren't good. The patties are super flat with wrinkled surroundings and the portion is tiny. You're better off at McD's or Burger King. Their fries which are shoe string suck!! I hate it! So tiny and the portions are too small. Their food is not worth the price and not worth the taste. Nothing special here. It looks like their pies are worth trying and they look appealing. I will not be coming back.

Thank you for the free custard to help me get my ice cream fix. You followed through on your promise to send me coupons and they worked and were delicious as always.

While in Wichita, we happened upon this Freddy's. My daughter and I were in the mood for custard, so we stopped in. I'm so glad we did because this restaurant was clean, nicely decorated, had friendly staff and the custard was delicious! Next time we're in Wichita we're making it a point to visit Freddy's!

I enjoy Freddy's very much. - Custard: creamy and smooth like silk. I love the creamy texture coating on my tongue before it begins to melt completely.....YUM!! It comes with two flavors (vanilla and chocolate). They're both good but I think vanilla tastes better. - Fries: their fries are cut smaller making it crispier, too. - Steakburger: they smash the beef flat before grilling. I like it because it has a crispier surface but not for a thick&juicy burger fan. - Chicago dog: pretty darn close to the original one!! I love it. I wish they could open a branch in Atlanta...but, well, I don't think they will. Too bad.
