Diabetics at TGI Friday

If you're a diabetic, then you must be extra careful while dining at TGI Friday. Try the salad menu at TGI Friday to keep your sugar and sodium intake in check. Soups are great to keep you full and satisfied without munching on the unhealthy greased meat-based dishes on TGI Friday menu.

Foods to Avoid at TGI Friday for Diabetics:

Sugar and sodium intake are crucial if you have diabetes. While the salads are the best option for you at TGI Friday, it is recommended to avoid the Pecan-Crusted Chicken Salad containing over 1000 calories and 1,650mg sodium. Also, skip Warm Pretzels with Craft Beer-Cheese dipping sauce as it contains more than 3000mg sodium. It is wise to skip the dessert for diabetics, especially the Brownie Obsession topped with Vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, and pecans.

Desserts are a big NO for you if you are worried about your high cholesterol levels. It is recommended to skip all kinds of desserts, especially the Brownie Obsession. You should also skip the meat burgers and sandwiches at TGI Fridays as these items are high in saturated fat which can elevate your LDL levels.

I like this place alot. It is a great place to take the kids and best of all it is a family owned place. The food is good and even I found myself excited as the train came around to bring us our food. If you have kids you have to go here.

Fritz was a genius, that's what I learned on my first visit to this institution popular with Kansas City families. Our large group of nine arrived at 11:15. I quickly learned that this is the best time to arrive. The restaurant looked quite full but we were seated immediately. Within 15 minutes the place was packed. By the time we left, probably 12:15 or 12:30, the waiting area was full of exasperated parents and children who were trying their best to patiently wait for a seat. The food is fried. There is a salad on the menu, but prior to going a friend advised me not to partake. Whatever, the kids all found something to grub on - burgers and grilled cheese and hot dogs. I went with the fried chicken sandwich. It was all OK. You don't go to Fritz's for the food, you go for the trains. A system of trains around the ceiling delivers the food to your table. The kids go wild for it. Three little complaints: 1. I would love to scrub this restaurant down. It's greasy. 2. Our group of four adults and five kids was seated in a booth. I would have preferred to split up rather than snuggle so tight. 3. I wish a server had checked in on us more often. Since the trains bring your food you don't really see the staff much. This was a fun lunch for the family. Will I go back? I'm child-free so not without my nieces and nephews.

For the likes of Yours, Truly, who is more prone to enjoying a Sunday brunch in decadent environs (or, at least a patio), clad in black cashmere (or cotton), avec pair of large sunglasses to block out the cruel daylight, firmly grasping a bloody mary and looking forward to a plate of some kind of sublime brunch fare, perhaps something with truffles and capers even, you might think Fritz's Railroad Restaurant would be my worst nightmare. And truly, it sort of is. But...I know some pretty fabulous children and I understand that even the best of them are probably going to far appreciate Fritz's to, say, Westport Café, for Sunday morning (the horror!) dining. Sigh. That's OK. I'll have you know I used to beg my folks to take me to Showbiz Pizza (which I still insist is far superior to Chuck E. Cheese, but I digress). And all children have to start somewhere in the journey of eating out in restaurants. Why not in a place where a train charmingly drops a basket of food off onto your table (major minus stars for all that disposable plastic ware, btw). "Carol Ann, I have asked you to keep the children quiet today! Get them out of the garden! Have Tina bring me up my coffee."

Fritz's is cute, but the food isn't very good. Take your kids, expect it to be noisy & the food greasy. They have a half price happy hour on shakes until 5pm, which is nice. I do enjoy their brownie sundaes, though they are kind of pricey.

Super fast service and great food. Will definitely go back the next time we are in town.

A restaurant where trains bring you food. A RESTAURANT WHERE ***TRAINS*** BRING YOU FOOD!!! Should be awesome, right? It was, for about half a second. When we stepped inside the restaurant, sure enough there was a train going 'round the waiting area, and inside you could see the trains shuttling in and out of the kitchen with food. After seeing it, we should have just turned around and walked out. Some of the other patrons that were waiting didn't care much for personal space or creepy staring (this is more about the people who were there when we went, not about the restaurant itself... but maybe these were crazed train-fans, and they could sense that we were only casual about our interest in seeing trains go around in circles near the ceiling... I don't really know. I just know that my wife doesn't like butts in her face, and strange women glaring at her.) Anyhoo, sometimes it's the crowd that can form part of the impression about a place, and this was definitely one of those times. We ordered our food over the phone. My daughter (6 years old) really wanted to place her part of the order, but didn't get the chance when she drew a blank after the phone was handed to her. After the umpteenth "is that our food?" a train unceremoniously dumped our food and we were on our way to eating our meal... before a drink was spilled on our table. My wife valiantly fought the oncoming flood of root beer with paper thin napkins that had zero absorbency. After about 1000 napkins were used, we had the situation under control, but not before the wrapper containing my daughter's hot dog was somewhat soaked. The hot dog was saved, but many good fries died in that flood. It was tragic. After a moment of silence, we moved on to eating our meal. My daughter got a hot dog, which was cut up to fit on a burger bun. Were they out of hot dog buns or is this the way they do things? I don't know. Either way, she seemed to enjoy it, but she's six and enjoys Chef Boyardee, among other fine delicacies. Fries and burgers were just so-so. Nothing to write home about, and certainly nothing to return for. The biggest highlight of the visit was probably this: as I stood at the register to pay, The Clash played "Should I Stay or Should I Go." Go. Go, and don't look back.

Cheap breakfast joint. Had two different breakfast sandwiches, both where good for the money. Its odd they have a drive-through, especially when they make fresh food. My breakfast sandwiches collected five waiting cars built up behind me over the ten minutes it took for them to get me my order. I'd suggest not using the drive-through, I only ordered two sandwiches and held the line up, I'd imagine it's twice as long for a soccer mom. Came back later for lunch, called my order in for the expedient take-out this time. Got two burgers that felt like I was eating the very definition of an American icon.

My six year old son absolutely loved this place. And honestly, that's what this place is all about... the kids! The burgers are small so make sure you get a twin. I got a Gen Dare twin, but I should have added an egg to it. Stay away from the pork tenderloin sandwich, it's pretty dry. The milkshakes are great. Fritz's has gained a few new regulars since my son will make sure we come back every time he's with us in KC, but that's ok... it really is a pretty cool spot for kids.

My family and I are finishing eating here. We ordered chicken nugget kids meal for my daughter and as I tire them apart so she could have small bites I found a metal shaving in the nugget. The trains are fun for the kids but the food is bottom tier. I realize the restaurant doesn't manufacture the nuggets, but they do have responsibilities for serving it. No more for my family.

This place is fun for young children - for about a half hour. It's irritating as heck for the parents. The place HAS to be so busy at mealtimes only because curious parents have been suckered into taking their kids here. The food is less-than-cafeteria food quality. Beware of the hamburgers if you aren't a fan of onions, they're cooked right in the burger. The fries were about the only thing truly yummy, and their side salad was the size of a chef salad, with fresh ingredients. The hot dog, a bit chewy and too spicy in my opinion for a 1-1/2 year old, was presented cut up on a hamburger bun. It's not a fluke. They make them that way. Maybe it saves having to buy different kinds of buns? Who knows. It's just weird. There seems to be plenty of workers wandering around delivering drinks and clearing tables, but if you want a refill...or something extra like mayo or another straw (because your toddler yanked yours out of your cup and tossed it on the floor between train passes) be prepared to spend some time getting someone's attention. I will admit, my son loves watching and listening for the train, but by the time our food actually arrived, he was already bored with it. Since I'm a fairly new parent, and am a glutton for punishment (and I believe every place deserves a second chance), I've been to this restaurant three times. Yes. THREE. And my party of 3 (me, hubby & 18 month old) ordered something different each time we ate there. I can truly say the only good food on the menu is the french fries and the salad. Everything else leaves you wondering "where's the beef?" and why does the grilled chicken sandwich taste like an ABC McD's chicken mcnugget? (Sorry McD's, but those things are just gross.) I'd like to say, stay away and pick another place, but we are all glutton's for punishment, aren't we? Especially when it comes to cheap entertainment for our kids! (GET THE SALAD!!!) ;-)

Great place for the kiddos and kiddos at heart. Expensive too. For my senior parents and I and two under age 5 it was $40 (with only two drinks ordered.) I had a migraine when I left. The burgers were OK. But there were lots of different burgers to choose from. It's neat to see though! I like the original in KCK better than this one, however. It gets loud during busy times, so if you are sensitive to loud noises, go during off peak times.

    (3)
  • David M.

The kids love the train that delivers your food. The KCK location is the original, but this is closer to home. My dad took me to the KCK one when I was a child. A tradition I have continued with my kids. There is something exciting about the food being dropped down from the train. A unique one of a kind family experience. If you can try the original on 18th Street in KCK, it seems like the 50s. This one is brand new. Malts are good burgers are good. Trains are awesome. I bought my kids the train whistle they sell, she drives my wife crazy with it. Good place for a treat.

I see a reoccuring theme with the other reviews. I noticed anyone that lives close to KC didn't rate them more than 3 stars. I gave them 5, for good reason. 1st off - If you don't have kids, the ONLY reason any non-parent adult should show up at this place is if they have some insane love of trains or if they're filling out a job application, in which if you don' t like trains or kids, you won't like working here. At first they have a "hostess" seat you - it appears to typically be pretty busy - and our "hostess" didn't really ask if it was our first time, but my awesome wife had some research so she knew what to do anyway - you have to order with the phone... the employees don't typically come back to your table... so to order your food & if you need anything, pick up the phone & ask for it. The food was hot, fresh, & for how busy they were, was delivered pretty quickly. I got some famous burger that had almost everything on it INCLUDING HASHBROWNS & it was AWESOME! Cooked well, the patties are the thin style. Their fries are general crinkle cut, and were fine, nothing special, hot = good. I also got chilli with mine, now I'm kinda of a fan of soups in general, including chilli. I've triend lots of chilli, and I did Not like the chilli. It was mostly a bowl of ground hamburger, some beans at the bottom but the only liquid was the grease run off from the cooked meat... I ate 3 bites & no more. Shakes are good as well, I had an oreo one, wife chocolate & kids shared a vanilla, everyone liked them. Menu said refills of anything full charge but they didnt charge me. My 2year old son was Glued to the trains the entire time. If we ever go back to KC w/ the family, we'll return.

This place is best BUSY. Normally I try to eat places during their lulls. Who wants loud and busy with a 4 year old. However, you are eating here for train action. If you are not here for the trains then go eat somewhere else. The food is better elsewhere. Sonic has better burgers with more flavor and their buns are not stale. I have eaten here before and gotten burned greasy fries. That time it was a slow time so I would expecting better food but today was busy and my food looked good. They have added a train that runs around the middle of the restaurant so even if the food trains had not been running there was a pretty quite Am-track train to entertain and my son was pleased to see it. They are also bringing out plates to eat your food off of instead of eating them off the paper wrappers on the table which is nicer. They say they charge for refills on the menu but the wait staff got free refills for the tables next to me and beside me but no one ever checked on us. I needed a new bottle of ketchup and would have loved a refill but apparently we were not worth stopping to see and every time I tried to catch one of them they were gone before I could YELL at them since it was loud. I would rather eat elsewhere but today my son had his own money and wanted Fritz's, so I enjoyed the pleasure of his company which is priceless. The food however is not. 3.59 for a large shake that is NOT large is ridiculous. We paid $19.83 for two people to eat.... once again the food value is not there and we paid a premium to enjoy the trains.

This restaurant is great. It has diner food which is awesome. The kids love the train which brings the food and the best part is the staff. Everyone, form the few teens, to the older employees are friendly and enjoy their work. We have a great experience every time we go. I like the Freddie Burger and my wife lives the Gen Dare burger. The kids get the grilled cheese every time.

  • Bill C.

Mediocre sonic like burgers with Oreda French Fries just like mom used to make...yum. Seriously how do you manage to only get 2 stars making burgers and fries. Can't you even feign phoning it in. Oh yea there are trains to watch going around. Yippee! Not sure I should even give them 2 stars now that I think about it.

    (2)
  • Cheryl L.

Fun for all ages... Take the little ones they will be mystified by all the train activity! Noise level is high but that's the kids and the trains that bring your food, it's expected.

  • Jason P.

This place is in my blood so I still love it for the memories. Newbies should visit the place, inside with the kids, and try the unique sandwiches! From Keely to Kitchen Sink there are several good choices. Onion rings are batter dipped, so crunchy and tasty. Milk shakes are great during the summer. And your kid walks out with a train engineer's hat.

  • Michael I.

Awesome train food delivery system affixed to the ceiling. Clever. Even phones at the table to call your waiter/waitress. (Aspiring waiters/waitresses with social phobias need not worry, this would be your niche.) 'Twas a lazy man who devised this concept, but a man who understood imagination and enthusiasm of children. Food was decent--closest comparison would be Winsteads. They even have a train machine in the front door that the kiddo likes to ride on.

  • Ben W.

If you have a kid that loves trains (or if you are a kid who loves trains), this place is great! The hamburger tastes like the "old fashioned" burger you secretly love. It has good flavor and affordable price. This is a great place to eat with a fun atmosphere. Five stars for family fun and reasonable price.

No frills, good burgers!!! Great for familys and kids. Greasy hamburger smell inside, but it's worth it!!! Cheap and fast!!!!

I went to the one downtown a few years ago and the food did not impress me....however, omg I had the burger with hash browns on it here and it was amazing! Really cute place for younger kids!

  • Keith M.

This place makes an ok burger for a decent price. The food isn't the star though, the ambiance and atmosphere are. If you love trains or have children this is a can't miss stop. Having a train deliver your food to you is just freakin' cool. I haven't been to KC in a while, but I can assure you if I ever pass though I'm stopping at Fritz's.

It was.. interesting, to say the least. We (boyfriend, mutual close friend, and I) went there for dinner. It's interesting, but really, really noisy. It seemed like it was more directed toward families with children (the Nick Jr on the TV's didn't exactly contradict that). My boyfriend is fairly ADD at times, so the trains fascinated him. After a while, hearing them go off about a dozen times in a five minute span (that might be a bit of an exaggeration) got really, really irritating. Anyway, you go in, you're seated, and someone explains to use the phone thingy to order. You do that, they'll bring your drinks out, and then your food is brought to you by train. It was pretty cool to see it brought out the first time, but when you see it over and over.. it gets old fast. We waited for what seemed like a while, though I could be wrong. Drinks were brought out by a person (not train), and we got our food. Greasy would be a bit of an understatement. Nothing too interesting, though it wasn't bad. Finished eating, got up and were able to pay by the door. I don't know if I'd go back without a kid, though.

It's pure train food fetish heaven! I used to eat at the original down in KCK as a kid, went to the one at crown center a couple times, so I was used to the service model. Be seated, purvey the menu, decision, pick up the phone, hit green button, wait patiently & waitress answers to take your order, drinks & all. My 3&5 year olds would give it a 5 star review but honestly the food is not as good as I remembered the original being. Unique experience for sure, the service is always fair, the prices are fair but for burger joints, I would hit a Five Guys or hell, Sonic next door! Recommend the Gen Dare combo with a Fring.

  • Gaz H.

Meh. Ultimately not worth the trip. They do the theme part well enough, but the kitchen...although not actually bad, let's just say that for a place that specializes in hamburgers and french fries I bet they have never peeled a potato or cut up a piece of meat. On the burger and fry front, they have a lot to learn from McDonald's, and Wendy's just beats them hands down. Most everything is ready made (even the apple juice came in an airline-style single serve plastic cup sealed with foil). My grilled turkey sandwich was assembled and grilled to order but was ultimately uninteresting - someone just took the turkey out of a package in the fridge. The staff is friendly and helpful - it must be said - but they can't make up for a flawed concept. Get a real kitchen, then call me back.

I have a two-year-old. He loves trains. So, when we're in the area going to the JoCo Museum, this is a good option. We've been to this location a couple of times now. It's laid out a little different from the one in Crown Center. It feels a bit more spread out, but the service is still what you'd expect. I ordered a burger and my little guy got the grilled cheese. He ate most of his sandwich and mine was okay. Their burgers just taste greasy. It's worth it though because my little guy loves watching the trains ride around delivering food and we can both eat for around $10. Well worth it for the smile on his face. Maybe next time, I'll just steer away from having a burger.

  • Dan F.

Fritz's is a fun environment with the train theme and the trains that literally drop off your food at your table. If you have children I think this is a good place to visit at least once. The food is not very good at all and the prices are too high for what you get.

    (3)
  • Lisa W.

Gave 3 stars because this would be a decent place to go with kids. If you do not have kids then go next door to sonic if you want a burger. The atmosphere is all train and good is delivered by a train, not cool old type train but little kid cheap train stuff. Service was good at the table however what really matters is the food. I got a pork tenderloin and it was horrible quality and not even warm. Fries were cold as well. Definitely not a place that we would return to. But would be good if you had kids

  • Brian E.

This place is a MUST for the family. Nothing else like it around. Great burgers and shakes. If you love trains you can't miss this place!!! What I love about Fritz's is the atmosphere and how the place works. I have yet to find another place in the metro like it. It's decked out like a 50s style diner, but with trains everywhere. You sit at your table with your menus and when you're ready to order, you pick up a phone at your table (which rings the kitchen) and place your order. A short time later your food is delivered to your table via an overhead train that unloads the foot onto a platform that then lowers to your table. The menu is full of delicious diner style food items and the kids get cardboard train engineer hats. This place is honestly a must for any family that has a train lover in them.

  • Tim J.

Well it's loud in here, obnoxiously so... Food smells wonderful, though. As for atmosphere (others have said it's great) I'm feeling a complete lack. Bright, loud, feels more like an institution than a restaurant, absolutely zero ambience.

    (3)
  • Sam P.

Yeah - I know I'm going to look foolish for complaining about service at a joint where trains deliver food, but when my kid spills his milk (and the lid on his milk cup wasn't on very well), after many people see me cleaning up the mess with napkins and no one offers to bring me a rag AND they charge me for another milk - I feel like I have a right to complain on this one. Yeah - my kid liked it. And yes, they're unique and a "fun" place to take, but food is subpar and service is horrendous.

    (2)
  • Robert H.

One of the better fast food places around. It's really fun for the kids with the little trains running along the ceiling delivering food right to your table. I had the fish sandwich, better than McDonald's for sure. My son LOVES their chile, ate every scrap and he's fussy. If you have kids for sure this is a place to check out. The desert was excellent.

  • Cindy A.

Their train is very cute and the phone made it more fun. The food was OK. Fries and burgers. The restaurant was very clean and the help was friendly. I'd go back.

    (4)
  • Kay L.

Kids love it for the novelty of the trains, of course, but the food doesn't stand out... smallish burgers, decent fries, nothing really awesome. The menu is about on par with Winstead's. Everything is fresh & well prepared, but just seems tiny; maybe I've become too used to the TGI/Chili/Bigmouth Burger that is the wretched excess of American dining these days. The burger with the hash browns on it was pretty good, anyway. It has an odd name that I can't recall at the moment, but it was the best thing we ordered.

It's a fun place to take your kids. After a few visits, though, they tend to not care so much about the trains that bring you food. My kid likes to play with the phone at the table more now. The food is fair. The burger patties are pretty thin, almost as thin as Winstead's if you can believe it. I have to get a Quad just to make up for the lack of thickness. Standard burger joint fare. Nothing Earth shattering. Take it in if you've never been. I would suggest the 18th Street location for a real feel. Otherwise, Shawnee is good if you're afraid of another north of 33rd St.

Saw this place out of the corner of my eye while running some errands one day. Confirmed it was the railroad restaurant from downtown I hear everyone talk about. Packed the family in the car for dinner. Wow. This place is annoying as all get out. To be honest, I hate places that are designed to be old diners, add a bunch of loud trains mechanically lowering your food and I'm ready to punch someone in the face. I loudly proclaimed to my wife that someone would have to be a jackass to come here without children, to which she pointed to the people directly to our right and behind me. Diner burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches with the traditional sides you'd expect. You order via phone at your table, somebody brings you some drinks in Styrofoam cups while you wait for an annoying little train to drop a metal box above your head. I'm glad I milked my cup of water because as I assumed, none of the workers stopped by our table for the rest of the visit. The whole reason we came here was because my daughter stares intently at the Chartroose Caboose train when we go there. "Hey, it's going to be even better when the train BRINGS the food!" Wrong. She about crapped her pants a handful of times as the loud train soared overhead and out of site. It's almost like she was expecting it to drop a bomb on her head. I'm fairly relieved I won't have to worry about her asking to go back.

I like the the place! Maybe it's because of the great time with family there. Sure the train gets annoying if you let it. It didn't bother me, but I would think they would make it better with several cars behind it. The booths are roomy and comfortable, good music playing, and the place was clean! I had the triple burger. It sounds bigger than what it is, three beef patties with grilled onions, pickles, and mustard. It was good. Not the best burger in town by far, but it hit the spot and was very hot when it was delivered to the table. That counts big time for me. I like grilled onions, if you don't, I'd suggest ordering without them. This place is cool if you have kids and are in a relaxed mood to enjoy the time with them. If you are in a hurry or have annoying kids go to a fast food joint! Enjoy life don't be a grump!

Well it's loud in here, obnoxiously so... Food smells wonderful, though. As for atmosphere (others have said it's great) I'm feeling a complete lack. Bright, loud, feels more like an institution than a restaurant, absolutely zero ambience.

About TGI Friday

TGI Friday is a casual dining American restaurant chain founded in 1965. The term “TGI” is an acronym for Thank God It's and together the name of the restaurant is often announced as Thank God It's Friday. TGI Friday also offers gluten-free items on its menu for those with gluten intolerance.

Besides the cool name, TGI Friday also has an interesting background story of its origin. The founder of the restaurant Alan Stillman lived in a New York-based neighbourhood full of a young crowd, especially girls from the airline and fashion industry. He started the first TGI Friday restaurant in New York in the hope of meeting single women as there weren't any such public place for young men and women to meet. He invested $5000 on his own and borrowed another $5000 from his mother to buy a bar named The Good Tavern and renamed the premise to Thank God It's Friday, inspired from an expression during his time at Bucknell University.
