Josie's is a local favorite Italian restaurant. Located in the small town of Scammon, the street will be lined with cars on a Friday and Saturday night. The food is excellent and the Italian marguaritas are delicious! Friendly wait staff many who have been there for years!

I've been here many times and always enjoy the adventure of trekking out to Scammon for some tasty italian in this unusual location. The lasagne is easily among the best I have ever had anywhere. So that is that. Beyond the fun/weird location and the AMAZING lasagne, there are definitely some negatives. The decor feels like what might have been considered "upscale" in rural kansas prior to the proliferation of chain restaurants. Wallpaper, metal framed chairs, dark green plastic-ey table cloths, wooden lattice and christmas lights. It's not a bad atmosphere, just feels very outdated...but I'll admit that is kind of a charm of the place too. The bread they serve is just sliced bread with tubs of butter. Pretty cheap and not all that great...again, outdated compared to what most italian places do these days. Service sometimes is OK but more recently it's been pretty bad...bad enough that it makes me start to notice the restaurants faults that I used to gloss over. We were there for about 40 minutes before even getting to place our order. We had to actually get up and go find our server at least 3 different times to ask for drinks, and even to please take our order. After that it was like pulling teeth to get things like extra napkins, etc... If someone asked for an extra fork, the server responded that he already put enough out there, so we should have enough. OK our mistake, I guess we'll just re-count or use the dirty one that fell on the floor under the table. The prices are also pretty high, and while some of the portions are large, they have a steep charge for sharing. Maybe that is why they are so reluctant to hand out extra silverware? With tax and tip, plan to spend $20 per person, or $25 if you are drinking anything besides water. Some people complain about the cash only policy but I say if Josies can bite their thumb at the credit card companies, good for them. I'd rather Josies get all my money than make them share it with Visa. The lasagne really is superb and this place has a loyal following that doesn't seem to mind it's quirks and high prices. We'll keep going because the lasagne is great and it is something fun and different to do! I recommend it as long as you won't mind the above mentioned quirks.

This is the best Italian I have ever had, including Italy. I went to the kitchen. It is spotless and you won't see any cans! Everything is fresh and made from scratch by the owner and her family. Given the plethora of mediocre chains in the area they are a hidden gem and deserving of recognition.

If you want to avoid the chains, this is a cultural hit. A very good Italian restaurant in the middle of no where. Yes, the sauce is sweet except for one of the appetizers which also has garlic marinara. Some appetizers are frozen but some are not. Ask the wait staff, they will lead you in the right direction. Combine the Alfredo with the marinara....wonderful!

like all reviewers say; "the middle of nowhere." You can't find Josie's with your cell phone app because there is no coverage. The town is small though and everyone knows about Josie's. I have been here many times because the food is that good. Always pay the extra $2 and get the Josie's sauce on your pasta. The service still doesn't make it. Cash only is a big problem too. Even so, I will be back.

Scammon, KS is essentially a ghost town. By this, I mean that the "downtown" area is almost completely empty. Storefronts stand vacant and there is a small Pepsi machine...that sells Coke. Eerie... Josie's is clearly doing something right. After all, it seems to have survived the Scammon curse. It's really a thriving hot spot that is able to survive in this small town despite being open only four days a week for four hours a day. Consider this New Yorker impressed. Family owned, Josie's offers delicious Italian food at slightly exorbitant for the area prices ($13 for a meal truly is pricey for Southeast Kansas, but a steal for my neighborhood in New York City). The lasagna with red sauce is a revelatory experience, and the meat ravioli (meatballs shoved into ravioli dough...) were truly the surprise hit of the evening. The manicotti with red sauce was equally delicious, as was the chicken parm. Everyone at my table (a group of 7) licked their plates clean. As "sophisticated New Yorkers" this rarely happens. Josie's is truly perfection. Cash only, pricey, and delicious. If only I weren't back in New York...

Great place to eat i love the food here. The bread and olive oil it exceptional. the entrees are all very good that i have tried. It is off the beaten path and when you drive into town you will think you missed a turn till you see all the cars parked around the restaurant. Be sure you have cash they do not take credit cards.

Good Italian food. Their red sauce is a bit on the sweeter side. I had the lasagna and it was really good! My husband had the chicken parm and he said it was just okay. We had to drive about 45 minutes to get there; Not sure if it's worth the drive, but if you are in the area, then it would be a great option. WARNING: They do not accept credit or debit cards, bring cash! We had to go to the ATM at a gas station down the street that was very old school and had a $20 max. Luckily my husband was able to sweet talk the attendant and get $40.

The food is always great. The service can be hit and miss, but the food always makes up for it. Can't go wrong with fried ravioli and lasagna with meat sauce.

This place might be a local hangout for old people tired of eating at Chicken Annie's but, the food has a lot to be desired. Over priced, sugary tomato sauce, hard over cooked meatballs, wet under cooked spaghetti, and still crowed. Locals must have killed their taste buds years ago on this MidWest version of Italian Food. The bread is from local bakery which is great when fresh but, the stuff we got was far from fresh. This place is nothing more than a ripoff. Do not recommend the lousy service or bad food to anyone looking for something good to eat. Save your money. Sally lose the sugar.

First time there, and last. Red sauce is too sweet stewed tomatoes with bread crumbs. Spaghetti cold, and meatball lacked in all aspects. Local chains in Joplin, unfortunately, much better. Summer scenery driving there was the highlight.

We have been here a couple times, I personally am not a huge fan but the family is just over the moon about this place. Its out in the middle of noooo where. Without GPS I would probably never find it. The fried ravioli is what seems to be every ones favorite here. It is very good. The bread is baked fresh there nice soft white bread and served with anti pasta that every one really likes. First time I went here I had the chicken Alfredo. Not even in my top 5 favs but okay. this time I had Spaghetti with meat sauce. Its pretty good but honestly, I'm just not won over. Ill stick with the fried ravioli and the good times had with the family. I've been told the meatball is very good as well. I have been told you must get there early basically at the doors opening at five or you will be waiting.

Several weeks ago, my husband and I drove 45 minutes out of town to this middle-of-nowhere place just to try some Italian food that for some reason has a very large cult following. I mean, if there's one thing that will make me drive completely out of my way, it's food that people rave about. Josie's has been open for as long as I remember. Last time I ate there was 1995. I don't recall much about that visit, but what I do know is this: people go nuts for Josie's and I needed to remind myself why. First of all, you must understand this restaurant is literally in the middle of a practical ghost town. The businesses that surround it look mostly deserted. On top of that, I had absolutely no cell phone service. I have AT&T, which is pretty much nationwide, but unless you have Verizon or US Cellular, you'll have to talk to your husband instead of scrolling through Instagram. And forgo checking in on Yelp. But most importantly, the food. It was good. We really enjoyed the antipasti. The bread was thick and soft like a potato bread or something, and the briney olives tasted so good on top. It was a great start to the meal. We decided to try the grilled garlic bread (very nice - char marks make it special) and the homemade fried ravioli. We both really enjoyed these. You could definitely tell they were homemade because you know there is just that certain something about fresh pasta. Entrees where spaghetti and meatballs for me and shrimp alfredo for my husband. Both were very tasty. The marinara sauce is of the sweet variety which I'm fine with but my husband prefers savory style. The meatballs were huge - I got two of them and could only eat one. The alfredo sauce was pretty light with a thin consistency. I wasn't opposed to that - sometime alfredo sauce can be very rich and thick and fill you up too fast. I actually thought their version was quite nice. Final verdict: we like it. We weren't over the moon about it like we expected, but I can see why people would be. The place is extremely casual and lax, also very very crowded and the wait on the weekends can be quite lengthy. If we were in the area, we would definitely go back again; however, I don't feel compelled to drive 45 minutes out of my way again. That's not a bad mark against Josie's by any means, just that I feel we've sated a curiosity and we can now move on with our life. Bottom line: if you haven't been, you must GO and see for yourself. Most likely you'll love it.

GO! Stop everything you are doing and go immediately to eat! If you are like me and have to drive a spell to get there do yourself a favor and order a couple more entrees to take home for tomorrow. Ahh......so good!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
