Kelsey’s Steak House Menu

Kelsey's has a very classy and romantic atmosphere with the dim lights and setting. It tends to be fairly busy and the wait can be up to 20 minutes on holidays and around graduation season. So it's supposed to be a good sign... But I've been to Kelsey's twice and I don't understand why the whole town thinks it's the best steak house. Perhaps it's because Kelsey's is the only steak house in sight? I've tried the regular size filet mignon and Monterey filet tips. I was disappointed with my filet mignon because it wasn't medium rare as I had requested. Instead, it was medium done and the meat lacked tenderness and flavor. On the other hand, the latter was much more appetizing. It was a sizable portion and each and every piece of filet tip was gushing with flavor and juice.

Atmosphere is nice. Lots of cars but plenty of seating available still. Friendly staff. Best Long Island I've had in a long time. Too small though. Smells great in here. I ordered the Delmonico Ribeye (crab encrusted, side of garlic butter), red potatoes and a salad with ranch and their creamy garlic dressing on the side. Wanted to try it but didn't want to ruin my salad with it if I didn't like it. I was taking it back to my hotel room so there was a very small margin for error! Loved the Kelsey's potatoes! Staff was nice. Food was tasty and I will go back.

Came to this restaurant with my girlfriend for our one year anniversary. The staff was friendly and the food was great (minus they overcooked my prime rib a bit). Will definitely come again if in the area!

Ya know, for one of the "fancier" places in Valparaiso, it really isn't that fancy. The atmosphere of the Steak House reminded me of the Bob Evans right up the street and really didn't make me feel any better with the service. On to the food: Great. Try the Steak.

Really good steak at this place. It is expensive, but it's what you pay for a good steak. I've gone here for several years now for special occasions throughout the years and it's been consistently great each time.

We go here a few times a year, and I really enjoy their steak. The wait can be long on weekends or at prime dinner hours. I've never had issues with the service; they are generally very knowledgeable and quick. I love the early bird menu (from 4-6pm each night). The portions are slighly smaller, but it is great bang for your buck. I usually order off of it while my husband gets something off the regular menu. I am a fan of their New York strip with mushrooms. Their French onion soup is delicious as well as their fried clam appetizer. The Howie Cow dessert is wonderful!

Love the steak "Kelsey's style." The best thing about Kelsey's is that you are comfortable there with or without the kids. The food is always good!

Are you seriously considering going to Longhorn? Really? Sigh. Early bird special is where it's at. Last time we went the Mexican guys in the back cooked some filet medallions that blew my brains against the wall. I couldn't get over how PERFECTLY they were cooked. I must have been talking about it for a week. And the thing is, I can't ever say that about any steak house around Northwest Indiana or Chicago. And for the price? Absolutely cannot be beat. Plus real charcoal is used back there, not a gas grill. Meat feigns know the difference in taste. Filet medallions medium with 12 garlic butter shrimp for ~$15 with a beverage, salad, and a side.

Can we say dirty windows with flies on the ledge? Can we say ripped, stained and filthy carpeting? Dark, marred and dated tables and chairs. But it has outstanding french onion soup, excellent steaks and garlic mashed potatoes that really are delicious. Gordon Ramsey needs to get here and help them update the interior - although a good, thorough cleaning and new carpeting would go a long way. As "Mama" said, if the front house is dirty - what's the kitchen like?! Has the local health department ever been here? Open your eyes and clean this place up. The biological experiment has come to a head, now what has developed?

The atmosphere is very loud and out of date, but service was very good, drinks were well made and food was very good. I had the oysters Rockefeller appetizer which was good. For my main course I had the cowboy bone in ribeye which was outstanding. Highly recommend it and well worth the visit. For desert we had a cake which was delicious and brought home a Howie the cow desert back for our hosts son which he was loving. The owner came by a few times to make sue all was well. Thank you. Bon Appetite!

We were on our way home from Chicago and found Kelsey's steak on yelp. The place looked very big and was busy, it was a good sign. They offer a variety of steaks, which come with your choice of soup or salad (salad was made fresh to order), in-house baked fresh bread, and a choice of a side dish (variety of potato dishes, rice, veggies). Everything was made very well, this place does not cut corners. We had New York strip and Delmonico Ribeye - both were fantastic (around $18 each). The steaks are not aged, or aged using a different technique but I still feel this place is worth a stop and offers a good value for your money. Someone compared this steakhouse to Morton's and such, I think the comparison is not appropriate, given the price/quality to value ratio, you get what you paid for and at Kelsey's it's fresh meat, that's well cooked and everything else that comes with it is made very well. 5 * steakhouses use higher quality meat which come with a different price tag. The wine selection was not superB but it was not bad. Although I haven't tried it (may be next time) but they do offer a Cab that they order directly from Napa Valley.

This place is the real deal! The owner Kenny and his team are fantastic, the food is outstanding and the prices a more than fair. A must try if you are in Northwest Indiana!!!!! Steve C

So we're all set to go to Merrillville, Indiana for a concert, and I think to myself, perhaps we can find a good restaurant to try. So I turned to Yelp for help and found Kelsey's. "Yelp for help". There's your next T-shirt idea! Kelsey's is located about 15 miles east of Merrillville. Nice non-smoking typical rustic steakhouse. Why does Kelsey's get 5 stars? Their "early bird" menu from 4-5:30pm is the best bang for your buck I've seen in a long time. For $8.95, you have a choice of 8oz prime rib, 6oz filet mignon, lake perch, BBQ chicken, or 20 piece grilled shrimp. And each comes with soup or salad and choice of potato. We had 3 glasses of wine and two prime rib dinners for $41, including a 20%+ tip. And that fucking cow out front is HUGE. I had to apologize to him prior to eating my prime rib and ask him nicely not to squash me as I rolled into the parking lot stuffed!

We came from out of town for a family dinner celebration for a party of 8. Everything about my experience here was wonderful. We were seated and waited on quickly. The servers were there when we needed and never rushed us at any stage of the meal. From the appetizers to the entrees to the wine selection we were not disappointed. The 1/2 dozen oyster were perfectly shucked.(I would have liked a mignon sauce with them) The chicken and waffles was a satisfying selection for the 20-something young man in our party. The fried perch was a crowd favorite, lightly coated, fresh and flavorful. All the beef orders were cooked exactly to order, from the prime rib to the petite fillets. All delicious. I recommend the Deadly Zin as a perfect wine accompaniment at a reasonable price.

New owners are arrogant and dont even know bow to talk to customers. If you think this Kelseys is the same as years ago, you will be VERY disappointed. I have given it more than one chance (about 4) and it sucks bad. The food is terrible. RIP Kelseys. Save your money. :( Why do these people get away time after time serving us awful food with awful service for the price we are paying ??

What a shame. We really use to love this place. We would go about once a month. Then new owners took over and it's been all downhill from there. I have been back about 6 times since the new management because I really wanted to give this place a chance. Went a week ago and it gets worse every time. They won't even bring you bread anymore unless you ask for it. Steaks are not nearly as good as they use to be but they did not have a problem raising the prices. Was there at 4:30 on a Saturday and we got a table right away. Left at 5:30 and there was still no one waiting to be seated. The place was half full. In the old days you would be waiting about 45 minutes for a table during that time. I guess that says it all. We won't be back again.

Visited this restaurant last night for dinner with some friends. I had eaten here a few times 7 or 8 years ago. It's still pretty much how i remember it. We had some appetizers, shrimp cocktail, bruscetta, and onion rings. They were all pretty good. I felt the prices were a bit outrageous, especially for what you receive. Pretty much everyone got steak or prime rib. They looked good and tasted good. I had a bone in rib eye steak medium rare that came out medium well. I didn't complain. It was good, just overcooked. Once again, it's way over priced in my opinion. I could eat a top steakhouse in Texas for what they charge here. I was happy that they did have some craft beers. I probably don't have to tell you that they are overpriced too. The service was pretty good, our server was friendly and joked around with us. The young ladies at the check in station were cool too.

I've had the filet mignon, crab legs, & prime rib. All very good & have kept me coming back for more. Worst part is that they are quite expensive.

Worth the 1 hour drive! Everything was just amazingly great; drinks at the bar, food & service from hostess to bartenders to our wonderful waitress. For appetizers we had the bacon wrapped scallops (giant) and rib tips (1/2 rack of ribs). We had salad w/blue cheese dressing and French onion soup. Entrees were (giant also) prime rib w/grilled shrimp, filet mignon w/French fried onions and garlic butter, T-bone steak, baked-waffle fries-red potatoes. Each steak was perfect and tender. We had zero room for dessert but couldn't say no to the amazing choices on the tray. We had "Howie" the chocolate cow that's like a hostess ding dong with a thick chocolate shell and the inside was Devils food cake and chocolate mouse....still great the second day from the fridge. We also had a very tall strawberry shortcake that was the best I've ever had. Soft sweet cake layered with fresh strawberries and thick sweet cream covered with more strawberries and cream, also great on day two from the fridge :)

Supporting local businesses is one of my endeavors and this is nothing against the franchise or national chain restaurants. Kelsey's is a local steak and seafood house that provides good food at good prices. The warm bread with honey butter is one of my favorites. Additionally, the salads are fresh with a variety of greens not to mention the black olives if you lives them. Appetizers such as the crab cakes are good and over the years I have sampled several of their desserts without being disappointed. I particularly enjoy the early bird specials. The perch is lightly breaded and pan fried. Along with the six pieces of perch, the side double baked potato truly fills you up unless you have the appetite of a lumberjack. Service has always been fairly consistent. If I had a complaint, it would be the noise level and that could be so many people fail to speak using inside voices.

After trying steak at several upscale steak houses (Ruth Chris, Morton's) I still have to give Kelsey's 4 stars. My family has been frequenting Kelsey's since we moved to the Porter County area and like any thing they've had their ups and downs. Recently though I had my rehearsal dinner at Kelsey's and was very pleased with the service and quality of the food. The filet is usually spot on and cooked perfectly. During normal business the early bird special is a good economic way to get a great dinner for cheap. My only beef (no pun intended) is they took the filet medallions of the early bird menu! Please return, the filet tips are not as good. Will still continue to visit this restaurant as they have shown throughout the years they have what it takes to be a solid area steakhouse.

These are not prime cuts of meat. I had the Delmonico, which was overcooked and not marbled well. Valpo just needs another true steakhouse.

Overpriced below average food. Service is not good either. Not much more to say about this place.

I would say this is a solid three verging on a four star establishment. I decided to go with the four because of the service. The atmosphere was dark like a classic Irish pub. My meal had its highs and lows. The Oysters Rockefeller, and the waffle fries with my steak being the high point. My steak itself was tasty but noticeably undercooked. I'm not one to complain or send it back, it was seasoned well. The soda had low carbonation, good or bad. The place was clean enough but not what you would expect for the ticket price. The menu was 4-5 pages and had a ton of items... What I ordered was good for the diversity of skill required. The lady at the bar was a really nice. Great service is what earns this place the additional star. Gordon Ramsey might rip this place apart, he might not, but he probably would... still for us regular midwestern folks its something to look forward to. (Especially if your boss or some naive wholesaler is going to pay)

Very disappointed -- again. Gave it a 2nd chance but it was no better than the first time many months ago. Small portions. Very bland scampi and lukewarm. Husband's steak was blah -- no sides cuz everything costs extra. No presentation at all and Way overpriced for the portion sIzes. Definitely would not recommend.

So you don't know what your getting, as they now have no ".oz" , its petite, king, and howie...They steaks are overpriced, have no flavor unless you get it kelsey's style. The reviewers here who think its good, need to stop going to Ponderosa...try Gene & Gorgetti's, David Burkes, Smith & Wolensky, Gibsons, Mortons, or Corndance Cafe. Then re-review Kelsey's

    (1)
  • Dustin P.

It's a steakhouse. That right there could be the whole review. They don't do anything to set themselves apart for any other steakhouse, which isn't an bad thing by any means. The do a good job at what they do. I'm not positive but pretty sure they don't use aged beef which is good if you're wanting a reasonably priced steak. As many of have said, they pack you in like cattle for seating and they fill up quickly on weekends. This is most likely due to them being the only dedicated steakhouse in Valparaiso. Overall a good place to get a steak if you're in the area, but if there is a place closer to you, it's probably about the same thing.

Very good food and great service. The food is very good and we found the value to be good. The portions are a bit on the large size.

Best steak house in valpo! Have dined here several times while in town visiting family and I love their food, and I'm a foodie! Definitely check out the onion rings, they come with several sauces! Yummy!

Love, love the steaks at this resturant, but we were given a gift certificate that the NEW management would NOT honor...will be doing steaks on Longhorn from now on :-(.

Kelsey's does well because of its location and lack of competition. Cuts of meat are NOT prime and service is good although wait staff is not knowledgable about what they serve. My experiences have been just OK and certainly not worth a long wait. It's a little over-priced for the product they deliver.

    (2)
  • Michael R.

This place is completely packed on the weekends, and for good reason: they have excellent steaks. Good cuts of meat, pretty good sides, good preparation. It's a little more pricey than I would prefer, but you get what you pay for. If you want $10 steak, it will not be the cuts that you receive here.

  • Nichole F.

It's always so busy in here. I guess that's because the food is good. I love their steak, and I'm picky about my steak. The only complaint is lack of elbow room, but that's to be expected in the most popular steakhouse in the county. I love the window to the kitchen, my daughter loves to watch the hustle and bustle while our food gets cooked.

This is a reply to Valpo..All,the Chicago steakhouse are wonderful BUT you are in Chesterton for a weekend meeting and you want meat..where else is there to go? On our visits the food has been pretty good and it's extremely casual..no snotty attitude For the record, If you want exceptional service, wonderful food and meat, Chama Gaucha in Downers Grove.....a whole star better than Fog De Chao.

  • Michael O.

This has been one of my favorite steak houses in Valpo for a while. They have great prime rib! Unfortunately...their management as of late has not been up to the level it used to be. Their servers are inconsistent with portions and how things are served. The bread used to be delicious..now it's dry and flavorless. They have the best strawberry shortcake though!

  • David B.

Wanting to try a midwestern steakhouse while in town, I ended up here. The meal was OK but not worth going out of one's way for. On the surf-and-turf plate, the prime rib was adequate but not well-marbled, and even though the menu gives specific descriptions of what grades of cooking (rare to well done) mean, they still managed to overcook it. The shrimp that came with it were terrible: small, undercooked, bland.
