I am definitely not a Chinese food expert. But I have had the sesame chicken and orange chicken multiple times and it has been consistently good. The egg rolls are good. I didn't like the pot sticker too much. And I have always taken my food to go. I say, go, keep this place in business.

Looking for good Chinese food in Granger and surrounding areas? This place is your answer. It's one of the more authentic Chinese restaurants around the area and it is delicious. Highly recommend General Tsao's, the pan fried noodles and orange chicken. The service is good. The food was delivered fast and the waitress was very attentive. She came by several times to fill our water and make sure everything was okay.

So now I've eaten a few times here and I can honestly say the food is far more authentic than your typical Chinese restaurant. This is a restaurant that deserves a try! It's Hong Kong style Chinese food. The hot and sour soup is spicy, with the right amount of zing but not gloopy like most other Chinese restaurants. The stir-fried extra-wide rice noodles are delicious, the Mongolian beef a step above most. And best of all, they have great lunch specials and a happy hour from 2:00-4:30 which includes soup, egg roll, drink for just $5.25. I just had the Kowloon shrimp, which was a good amount of shrimp in a slightly sweet, spicy sauce. The egg rolls were plump and filled with a ground pork and cabbage mix with a very crisp rice paper exterior. I'm being selfish here but I'm hoping people will come out and try it so this place makes it. It's totally new management and no relationship to the awful Chinese buffet that used to be here. Nice service too. The waitress was really sweet to our daughters and they love the wonton soup here.

Glad we decided to stop here, on a recent trip from Cleveland to Chicago. South Bend is an ideal stopping point on a trip Westward from Cleveland...and when our first choice of dining turned out to be closed for the holidays, we ended up at my "back up" choice and were pleasantly surprised. Kowloon Bay is a huge space (they must host large gatherings, or maybe the space did as whatever restaurant was there before them). We decided to share a few family appetizers, individual soups and a couple of main dishes. Appetizers consisted of crispy egg rolls and large (triangular shaped) crab rangoons. Both were fried nicely and not overly greasy...dipping sauces were your typical duck sauce and hot mustard (good hot mustard!). For soups, one daughter got wonton and the other daughter, wife and I all had hot and sour. Wonton soup looked good filled with large wontons. Hot and sour soup was perfectly "sour". Our main dishes consisted of our family favorite (General Tso's Chicken) and a combination (of meats) fried rice. Both portions were generous and easily shareable. The General Tso's was lightly breaded and deep fried...but the cause was light and not overly syrupy. The fried rice also had a mild but delicious flavor. Would definitely stop here again on our way through town...nice diversion from your typical turnpike fare!

I was craving Chinese food after shopping in Granger. After reading the positive reviews about Kowloon Bay on Yelp, I decided to order takeout. When I arrived, the place was empty with the lights dimmed--but after a few minutes the hostess came out and promptly fetched my order from the kitchen. My family and I were pleasantly surprised--it's been a long time since we've had good Chinese takeout in the area. Egg rolls were deliciously crunchy--not greasy. Big plus. The combination fried rice was super spicy, as we'd requested. The chicken lo mein had lots of crunchy veggies. And the orange chicken was our favorite. Crispy, bright and delicious. We will be ordering from here again next time we're in the area!

I agree-food was excellent. Best I've found in the area. But service was so so. Not sure if server was new or not fluent in English. But I will definitely be back!

This food rocks. Have only had delivery so far and every time the food was great. The Orange Chicken is distinctive for actually having orange rind in it, although it has to be added that my son was taken aback by that fact, as he'd never had orange chicken so actually involved with oranges! General Tso's is quite similar, but not orange. Good spiciness level, which for me means relatively hot. Also had Mongolian Beef--really good, with wonderfully cooked onions to balance. This place is solid. Today (nov. 2014) I ordered Dan Dan Noodles for the first time, and I did ask the telephone answerer whether they make a genuine spicy Chinese style with Szechuan peppercorns, etc. The young woman on the phone didn't know about the specifics, but she did say it was spicy. Anyway, the delivered dish was great. As some readers here might know, Szechuan pepper is not actually a pepper but a spicy kind of berry that creates a sort of "numbing" (but not unpleasant) effect rather different from "hotness" like cayenne. I don't know another place around here that really does that, as Americanized Dan Dan noodles are often made sweeter with peanut or sesame sauces. It is possible they did my order differently from the usual because I mentioned it on the phone. Cannot be sure. This place really deserves attention.

Great place for Sunday lunch. We've been here 3 or 4 times now and always eat for less than $30 for a family of 4. Great food, better prices and the food comes out quickly and hot. Try the Mongolian beef (I ask for added spicy) or the shrimp in garlic sauce. Excellent. If you like it a little sweeter, try the honey chicken, my daughters fav.

I write my reviews on the fly as I dine. I have heard good things about Kowloon Bay. I must admit that I had my apprehensions about the building as I has a history of rodent and other pests from when I was Chi Chi's Mexican to the King Buffet. I have heard the Kowloon owners set to tear the place apart to kill all the creepy crawlies long before they would take over this building. So for now I put aside the history to give it a fair shot. So let me start with the food. I ordered hot & sour soup and an appetizer sampler to try it all. There were BBQ beef on a stick, spare ribs, shrimp toast, egg rolls, and crab rangoon. The beef and ribs were tasty but pretty much the same as and Chinese place in town. The crab rangoon was quite good. The shimp toast was decent but the shrimp filling was much too thin on the toast. The eggs were not good. The filling was mush and lacked flavor and texture. I would opt for crab rangoon for an app over all the rest. For main course I ordered mu shu pork. It was fine. I like that they actually give you Mandarin pancakes and not a Mexican tortilla. Really wished the pancakes were served soft warm from a steamer. The flavor of the mu shu was ok. The plum sauce had a layer of oil on it, it tasted like sesame oil. The mu shu was missing the wood ear mushrooms. It was not the best I have had but wasn't the worst. Over all it wasn't memorable food. It just tasted like any other sit down Chinese place. Every thing just seemed not much different than Mandarin House or Ho Ping. All are pretty good but not wonderful. The atmosphere.... Big and empty. All around the center is empty space closed off. The center is where everyone seemed to be seated. The lighting was a bit too bright for any ambience. The room had some fake 'as seen on tv" faux fire place. Small electric space heaters were placed around the room. I couldn't tell if the heat didn't work or they just like space heaters. Service... Lacking. One waitress for the room. Took a long time to get her to see if I wanted something to drink and order. Then she brings the appetizers but I sat for five minutes waiting to see her again to ask for sweet and sour sauce and then I realized that I had no plate. In all it was pretty good but lacked in service and unique dishes from the other places in town. As I sit writing this I just over heard the owner is the old owner of Mandarin House which he sold about 5 year ago. The current owner of Mandarin House also owns Ho Ping which makes sense as to why they all taste similar. I will say that I liked the old Mandarin House food better than the I like it currently. That said I will have to try some of my old favorites from Mandarin House here at Kowloon Bay the next time. I bet it's the same.

We were excited to try this place under the new management, as we were recommended to come here by a Chinese friend of ours. I will refrain from commenting on the waiter, as he is clearly new. About half the food was good, and about half the food was cold. I'm not quite sure why this place is getting rave reviews recently. It is not particularly reasonably priced, rather it is right in line with the normal Mishawaka price range for restaurants of it's type. The food, while edible, was certainly nothing special.

This would rate 5 stars if the service was as good as the food. We were a party of 6 and one of the first tables occupied on the night we ate there. Our server was either new, not fluent in English or both but we managed to place our order without too much difficulty. The soup and appetizer (pot stickers) arrived promptly and both were delicious. Two entrees came out first, followed a couple minutes later by two more. At that point our server seemed to disappear as four of us began eating while the other two sat and watched. It was at least 10 minutes before I was able to flag down to the hostess to tell her we were still waiting for 2 entrees. She went to the kitchen and a few minutes later the rest of our meal appeared. Still hadn't seen our server since she brought the 2nd two entrees. While we were waiting for the last two entrees, diners who had been seated after us were being served. Our server never stopped by to ask how everything was and in fact, we didn't see her again until she brought the check. She didn't ask then either. My guess is that the screw-up was in the kitchen but the lack of follow-up on the part of the server added to the delay. All but one of the 6 entrees were first rate. (The salt & pepper spare ribs were quite dry and begging for some kind of sauce.) The portion sizes were perfect. We will definitely go back because of the food and hope the service has improved.

Kowloon Bay is an Excellent. I prefer to have homemade Chinese food and not fast food Chinese like the Panda place. The service is excellent and I get my food fast. They have Lunch specials from 11am-2pm which I can't attend because of work but they do have a Happy Hour from 2pm-430pm which I do go to. The price is great at $5.25 dollars. I have tried several meals from the Happy Hour selection. All the dishes are chicken since I don't eat red meat. I've had Cashew Chicken, Chicken with Vegetables, Lemon Chicken and Chicken with Broccoli. What's cool is I've requested that they add or change the order and there was no extra charge. All the ingredients are fresh and made to order. Unlike fast food Chinese were the food sits out in the open for who knows how long. Today I tried Pineapple Chicken which was a dinner plate not the Happy hour one. The Pineapple Chicken was very tasty and was very healthy. The next time i have the dish i'll tell them to leave the mushrooms out :). There was a lot of food for your money. I do plan to go on a regular basis. Check the place out you won't be sorry.

This is one of the most underrated restaurants in the area. Forget the fact that the location is haunted (millions of people tried to open restaurants there and they all ended up closing), their food is just great. All Chinese restaurants in town cook pretty much the same menu and even their food itself tastes quite similar. When I went to Kowloon Bay for the first time, that was what I was expecting, but to my surprise their food was somewhat different. Better I should say. I tried a few of the house specials and they were all great! Service was very friendly and my only disappointment was that every time I went there, I was basically the only one dining in. I feel like the owners have given up and they don't seem to do any advertisement. The food is great, the service is great, the location is not bad, so why won't people come eat here? Who knows...

Don't be discouraged due to the history of this restaurant. It is a HIDDEN GEM! I know this used to be a buffet ( a quite disappointing one to be honest), but since they recently renovated and changed it into a regular cook-to-order restaurant, I have been here several times and every single experience was great! The food was fresh tasting and just so flavorful. Price is definitely in the affordable range. Our dinner was around $22 for 2 with soup & entries. I wish they would put more effort into advertising because I don't see many people going here (again most likely due to how people perceived the buffet in the past). Beside the common Chinese dishes, the house special menu seems to have many interesting choices. Last night I got the spare ribs with black bean sauce and bf got the lemongrass beef. Both were delicious and portion was pretty reasonable, we still had some to bring back home. We also got the garlic pork and orange chicken in the past and surprisingly they were very different compared to other Chinese places. Do you ever feel like you can never go wrong with orange chicken because they all seem to taste the same? Well I remember getting it and thinking this actually has that fresh, tangy orange flavor that I loved, not just standard sweet sour citrus-y taste everywhere else. It could be because I was starving the moment and my taste buds was enlightened, but anyhow try for yourself! We live pretty far from this place, otherwise I'd prefer this over JW Chen any day. I want to try their fish and clams in black bean sauce next time. We'll definitely be back!

As a Chinese American living in Michiana, I've been hard pressed to find something I actually like to eat at a Chinese restaurants. I've tried everywhere, and can't find a single place that serves even slightly authentic southern Chinese cuisine. The food at JW Chen's is overly sweet, over-sauced, but I actually ate there the most since they seemed to be the only place that actually had fish on the menu..and beef noodles. JW is good for Taiwanese spins on Chinese food, but everything is sort of tainted by the owner's distinctly Taiwanese palette. I'm a huge fan of Taiwanese food. I'm not a fan of Taiwanese renditions of Southern Chinese classics. Enter Kowloon Bay, which pays homage to the very place I believe the best Chinese food in the world is served: Hong Kong's Kowloon. And although this restaurant doesn't pretend to match what you'll find there, it does let you dabble in the things we're familiar with. Black Beans and Clams, Steamed shortribs (usually eaten at dim sum), ShiChuan Boiled fish and Cabbage, and fat rice noodles stir fried with beef and green onions. As this is only the second review for Kowloon Bay, I'm sure there'll be more to come rating its proficiency at Orange Chicken, to which I can assure you is better than anywhere else you'll find. "Real" Orange chicken with its slightly crispy skin and dried birds-eye chilies..not bogged down by some heavy corn starch sauce. Just perfectly glazed and not overburdened by either sweetness or sourness. The service is good. The second time I went there I ordered things that our waitress couldnt understand. (This is actually a good sign as far as I'm concerned)...and she politely asked the Chinese speaking waitress to help her take our order. At lunchtime, food arrived within 10 minutes, and drinks were refilled quickly. I'm ambitious about Kowloon Bay. As someone that spends 4 months out of the year in China, and who grew up in Chicago and lived in LA, I've been spoiled by good Chinese food. When I return to my home in Granger, I'm left with limited options...so that I find excuses to drive an hour and a half down toll road to Chinatown in Chicago. Now I think I'll do that less, as long as the food here remains as good as it can possibly be, considering its location. The one star I took off is because I think maybe we should have gotten a little more fish in our boiled fish. But no complains about the flavor.

Omg people please come and give this awesome establishment business! I was wary about coming here because the previous buffets were not good. I decided to take my family out for an early Mother's day feast. We were planning on going to sohos bit it was an hour wait. I am so glad we chose to come here. They have authentic Chinese food and a Chinese menu. Seriously after Great Wall closed in South Bend we have not had great Chinese food in the area. But now we do!!!! Will be back for sure!

After reading the other yelp reviews on Kowloon Bay, I decided to try it for Sunday lunch. Yes it is the old Chi-chis. Yes the lights in the middle were bright. BUT for the price and the quality of the food Kowloon Bay ranks right up there with Mandarin House. From 2 to 5pm they have a special that you get your meal and soup and egg roll and rice/fried rice for..... drumroll please $5.25. I got the chicken with garlic sauce and it was a good portion with a cup of rice on the side. The wonton soup was very good as was the spring roll. So, maybe the bad streak for this address is gone and we have a good Chinese restaurant near Granger. The food was good. The crab rangoons the best I've had in South Bend.

Looking for Authentic Chinese food or American Chinese food? They can do both. I can honestly say Kowloon Bay is definitely one of my favorite restaurants of all time. As a Chinese-American who has grown up in Hong Kong and in the US, the chef's stuff is legit. It's flavorful, perfect and really well priced! If you know Chinese, definitely ask for the Chinese menu because they have some amazing stuff there.

Tried for the first time for a midweek lunch when on a shopping trip at the mall. About 20 dishes on their lunch special menu. The General Tso's Chicken was an A. Only a few in the restaurant at the time. I was happy my meal arrived 2 minutes after getting it out from the wok. Steaming hot! The flavor of the sauce was excellent, and I have had a lot of General Tso's with it being my son's favorite Asian dish. I like that they refilled my water glass twice without my having to ask... the sign of great service. The hot and sour soup was some of the best I have ever had...homemade flavor. Definitely a restaurant that will be there for the long haul. All Asian food lovers need to discover this one. Heh Notre Damers...it is worth the drive.

A great find! I have been here thrice and the food has been consistently good and very reasonably priced. It reminds me of the chinese food in Chicago's chinatown. The dishes are not greasy and overly sweet like most other 'chinese' restaurants and the service is courteous. The seafood is very fresh and that says something about the quality of their ingredients even in the middle of the midwest!! During my first visit the restaurant was quite empty and I was worried if I made a wrong choice but the food was great...now more people are discovering this place. Its my new favorite place for non-americanized chinese food!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
