All beef hot dog was pretty awesome although I didn't find it incredible. This place is just really good at pairing toppings that's for sure. The mixture of toppings on the hot dog were on point but would be really easy to recreate with simple ingredients at home.

Went here for lunch with friends from work. It really had a neat style once you came in the door. Decorated like an old speak easy or boardwalk or something. You go in and it's almost like a food court. Multiple lines and different areas for different foods. If you go, you MUST have a beef sandwich. Like a roast beef sandwich but sliced much thinner. Yum.

Hey Portillos, your absolutely killing it!!!! The best place around for beefs, quite possibly the best I've ever had, no, they are the best!!!! Everything on menu is quality, salads are extremely good, fries rock, I mean it's hard to say if anything is not good in there menu. Keep up the great work, everyone in restaurant are first class, so glad you are in my neighborhood!!

I was recently visiting Chicago and a coworker recommended this place so I checked it out with my mom. Not sure if all locations look like this one but, this place also had a pasta/salad spot attached. We thought about a salad but went straight to the hot dog side. I got chili cheese dogs and she got the regular hot dots with mustard relish. We ordered fries and a chocolate shake to split as well. The price was right at about $17. The wait was surprisingly long for hot dogs and the place wasn't entirely busy so not sure why it took so long. The poppy seed buns were a nice touch. I liked my chili cheese dogs but would probably get something different next time. I didn't think to ask if the chili came with beans (it did) but I was able to pick them out pretty easily. Not a bean person. My mom was a little turned off by the color of the relish on her hot dogs. It was neon green! Not sure if they do that for looks or what but it was definitely odd. A friend commented on my foursquare check-in saying she loves their chopped salad and my coworker said he loves their beef-n-cheddar croissant sandwich so if I get a chance to revisit this place I'll have to try those things out next time.

Chopped salad & a Chicago style hot dog from here only! The Laugh Factory sticker on the poles through the drive-thru are from me.

Portillo's is a Chicago institution. It's seriously great. If you never have been, get the beef sangwhich. I always get the beef dipped in red cause that's how i love it, with sweet peppers. Hotdogs are good the salad's are good, chop and ceasar the chocolate cake shake is amazing the pasta is good fries are good on mondays i think they have ribs, i havent had it in years but i remember them being good not a place i go often but when i do i usually eat big

Love Portillo's for lunch! Must have a Combo with sport peppers on the side whenever I'm in the Chicago area.

Haven't had a good Italian beef in years, 4 years to be exact. Yeah, there were places in Austin that had Chicago heritage, but the beefs just weren't the same. So, on a recent trip to Chicago I made sure I stopped by a Portillo's and had one hot and wet. So so good. The spice and crunch from the giardiniera, the gravy dripping down my hands and arms. I'll see you again next time.

The Portillo's shops are always a good standard of comparison for hot dog restaurants. My fav is the Grilled Italian Sausage, and I actually had two of those today. Friend had a standard dog, and he said was just ok. We each had a strawberry shake and they were VERY good. Maybe good as can be had anywhere. Fries...average at best. I will always return for more.

This used to be the best Portillo's around but I'm over it. Last two times I went and ordered a beed and cheddar croissant and there was literally zero cheese on it. I called the first time and they were very defensive - "Well it's UNDER the meat!" Yeah... I checked there. There is none. Went back today and same thing happened so I'm done calling and I'm done spending my money here. Everyone who works here is crabby, the managers don't care. There's better beef places - it's Chicago. I don't need to waste my time with this chain.

I hope I'm never too _________________________ (insert any word here) to eat hot dogs. This place rules. I go to bed angry every night at my parents for not raising me in Chicago.

I love this place! Their food is great! Besides the food the employees are super friendly! The workers that are out on the floor cleaning the tables are the friendliest! There's this one older woman who always seems to be there when I go. She's such a sweetie. I've never had a bad experience here.

This is a great location that is a quick drive from Midway. It would be easy to get to during a layover on your Southwest flight and it's worth it. Perhaps you heard of the hot dogs and sausages, which are awesome. Maybe it's the Italian Beef and maybe you aren't new to Portillo's at all. But let me give you a hint about that beef. Order a "beef - hot - dip". That is an Italian Beef with hot peppers, which is then fully submerged in the au jus and then wrapped up and popped in the bag. It is...INSANE and the sole reason for the 5 stars. The dogs are good, the sausage is good, the beef is awesome - but the "beef hot dip" is where it's at. Do it.

Portillo's/Barnelli's is one of the most amazing restaurants I have ever eaten at in the Chicago area! It is now a tradition to go there every time someone flys into Chicago Midway! I do have one request, can you expand the 'You pick two' to an all day offer? It is perfect and I never have leftovers! Please consider this request!

  • Chely C.

Everything "Portillos" has on it menu is delicious. My favorite is the hot dog with all the trimmings and an order of cheese fries. From the Barnelli's menu I love the "chop salad". Oh, you must order a slice of the famous Portillo's Chocolate cake, it's to die for!!

There is a reason this place is always busy. Good food, served fresh, at decent prices. Definitely worth a stop.

Food is good, parking and drive thru are horrible, after waiting for 10min in line for a beef and fry I am told to wait longer in their drive-thru wait parking spot.

Had to try the big hype it was okay, A dirty dog is a dirty dog not sure what all the hype is about. What really had me was the beef sandwich. Its a must!

Great spot. Love the atmosphere. Crew is friendly. Italian beef is the best I've had. And the chocolate shake is like a piece of heaven.

I've been to a handful of Portillo's and I hope that they're all run as well as this one. The drive through runs like a clock. Everyone is fast, efficient and knows exactly what is expected of them. They have the service down to such a science, that they can find time to joke around with their customers. Like when my girlfriend insists that I do the ordering, because she fears the retribution that inevitability follows ordering a hot dog with ketchup. Their prices are high, but the service and quality is well worth the expense in my opinion. Much to the agony of my wallet, I'll probably be a regular here for a while.

    (4)
  • Bobby O.

He who can cast the first stone at Portillo's for their food quality just try it! I love their bacon cheeseburgers and hot dogs. Much more than a burger joint as they have great pasta and vegetarian options as well. I do get annoyed with the drive thru because they always want you to pull over in the lot and then they walk out your food. It is so annoying.

  • Jeannie A.

I'm a fan - probably hit them up 4-5 times per year. This location has the Portillos and the Barnelli's pasta, all in one. I usually do my take-out from the Barnelli's side. Their sandwiches and pastas are really great - though the pastas run around $11/each. The chicken parm sandwich is huge and comes on foccacia, probably my favorite high-calorie sandwhich. Chopped Salad is the best around. The chocolate cake-shake is a decadant dessert. I know people love the beef, hotdogs, and burgers, but I think they are good, and you can get that stuff just about anywhere. Always crowded and parking sucks, even though they have a lot. You usually need to just park in the old krispy kreme lot and walk over.

  • Anghel P.

I'm a huge fan of Portillo's and I'm so happy we have one in California. Almost everything I've tried here is amazing, with the exception of the Chicago-style dog. It just didn't click with me. Especially since I tried it after I tried Gene and Jude's! My favorites are the Combo Italian Beef and Sausage. Dipped. Now that is a sandwich! I tried a couple of other places for Italian beef and sausage, and this place was my benchmark. Also if you're curious about the Chocolate Cake Shake...treat yourself! It is so delicious. If you feel guilty or counting calories, just share with a friend. Also, on the Barnelli's side, their salads are great too! I tried one with Romaine, Macaroni, Chicken, Cheese, and other goodies. That was one of the most refreshing salads I've had.

This place is awesome. Best Italian Beef around and the soups are fantastic. If you are looking for a great place to take the family this is a can't miss destination. It might be a little on the costly side but in my opinion worth it.

Very pricey. Food is over rated. Do not go there and I live 5 blocks away. 5.00 for a grilled ham and cheese jyst does not seem right. I rather go and buy the fixings and make it my self

I've ate at nearly all the Chicago area Portillo's. This one serves the best food, and had the best staff. If you are new to Portillo's Get the beef sandwich dipped! Their beef is better than Al's beef. I don't care what you say! The fries and onion rings work. The chopped salad is always good. If you go in, or phone ahead, the chicken parmesan sandwich is worth its weight in gold! They have a great meatball sandwich. The sundaes are great, and the strawberry shortcake is their best dessert!

Oh, Portillos. We go to this location because they have the chocolate eclair cake which I love so much, and I like the decor. There's a Portillos in Forest Park where we live, but I'm not a fan of the "diner" design. And I was told at one point that I can't order my chopped salad without meat here and would need to go to a Barnelli's location instead. That may or may not be true, but I still prefer this one. It's bigger and never feels that crowded on the inside. The one in FP seems to be packed all the time. 9 times out of 10, I get the chopped salad - no chicken, no bacon. 5 times out of 10, I allow myself to get the eclair cake. For the most part, I control my sweets intake really well but there are certain things that I am a sucker for and eclairs are one of those things. The chopped salad is heaven for several reasons. The house dressing is soooo good. Has a nice "tang" to it. And I love how everything in it is "bite size" because it's easy to eat. As an herbivore, I'm something of an expert on salads and there's nothing more annoying than trying to eat a salad with huge leaves of lettuce that you can't fit into your mouth. Then bits of dressing get on your face and your clothes and it's just not good... The chopped salad has solved all of these problems. The little bits of tubetti are such a fun surprise when you bite into them. It's just a fun salad to eat. We usually eat there, but order it to go so I get the salad in the plastic container since I'm never able to finish the whole thing. This is a salad that actually still tastes good a day later. I'm not a huge fan of leftovers in general, but this I will eat again, even after sitting in the refrigerator for 24 hours or so. Their onion rings and fries are also very tasty. They're quite an enterprise, these Portillo's people. It's pretty crazy.

Big restaurant and everyone seems like a regular who knows what they're doing. There are two different restaurants to choose from and it's first come first serve seating after you receive your food. Food was delicious. I had a southwestern bbq chicken salad which had so much flavor and so many different textures. My coworkers had some burger and some hot dog which are their "go to" items. Great prices for the portions. Their menu is up on the wall with just the names of the items (no descriptions), which makes it a little difficult to order, but the staff is very nice, even though it was prime time lunch.

This place just isn't the same anymore starting with the unprofessional management. I recently placed an order over the phone and was told my food would be ready in 15min. I arrived at portillos about 20min after placing my order and after waiting another 5+minutes the worker told me they didn't have the pasta I had ordered. Manager came to give me a refund, since I had paid already, he did not even apologize for the inconvenience, he didn't bother asking if I wanted anything else, he was just plain rude.

This a review just for Portillos Rib dinner. Ribs somewhat dry and chewy, NOT FALL OFF THE BONE, and hardly no sauce, small portions - even the potato was small, and the bread small. Average salad. They make many good food items, but not ribs. Would never go back to Portillos for ribs again. Much better ribs at The Pit Rib House in Hickory Hills, and Billy Boys in Chicago Ridge, or Pappys in Evergreen Park, Illinois.

Always good food. You're not going to find better burgers anywhere in the area. They have a real good breaded chicken sandwich too. Nice interior and pretty fast service.

My company sent me out to Chicago for a couple weeks to help out at our new facility there. My first day, I was told by the locals that you have to try Portillo's if you want a real Chicago hot dog. If the locals recommend it, how can I not try it? I couldn't be happier that I did. The hot dogs were the best I've ever tasted, hands down. I decided I needed to go back for more, but to see how the other food on the menu holds up. Their burgers are fantastic. When you take a bite, there is no doubt they are char broiled. I even had to try the chicken sandwich, since most places over cook the chicken. I have to say it was juicy and flavorful. If you're in Chicago, you have to make a stop at a local Portillo's. Now only if I can convince them to open up a restaurant in New Jersey.

The absolute best burger I've EVER eaten!!! You must taste it to believe it. Had one on the way out of Chicago. I turned back to get another one for home. The spaghetti is also great. Their drive through is quick & efficient. Have never seen a system quite like it.

My family and I loved it, great food and fun environment. Perfect for kids too. We stopped on the way to a Chicago Fire game and had maxwell dog and some pasta. Service was friendly and good, staff was also helpful when clearing our plates.

I stood there for 10 minutes while my order sat there. It took about a half hour from the time I ordered to the time I received it. I understand I ordered something that takes longer then most things, but really everyone around me got their food... and I was still waiting as i looked at my food. What a waste. At least the staff is always so nice, and the food is defiantly amazing. Especially their cheese fries!

I enjoy their char-broiled burger! My sister enjoys the salads from Barnelli's. Will have to try something off of Barnelli's and the chocolate cake shake one of these days.

A Chicago staple. Good food, fairly quick service. Generally crowded, which goes to show how well-liked it is. I've yet to get something from here I didn't like, but I can say I've had my share of screwed up orders from the drive through. This location also has a Barnelli's, which has good Italian dishes. The baked spaghetti is a garlic extravaganza - one of my favorite things they make. Of course, the chocolate cake shake is the height of indulgence. I've done it once, I don't see myself allowing that many calories in a single food item again, but it's worth trying. And, of course, the chocolate cake on its own is quite nice, very rich and moist.

I will not go anywhere else for an italian beef, period. For good reason too. Everytime I try a new place, I compare it to this one, and Portillo's can't be beat. Plenty of food options on the menu, great prices, and an abundance of flavor, you cannot be disappointed. The food is great, the deserts and shakes are delicious, and they serve beer! To top it off, with all of their little "prohibition era" type decor, posters, and nick-nacks, you will find it difficult not to love this place. Every time that a friend visits, I make it a point to bring them here to share the wealth. I am proud to claim Portillo's as one of the many shining stars of Chicago.

For some reason, I used to really like their salads.... and we liked coming here to grab something "on the go." We felt that it was better than going to McD's a few blocks down. This has changed since our first review. It is very hectic and loud. The tables and bathrooms are dirty. I wouldn't recommend anything on the menu.

  • Joel G.

Well damn there's not much to say here beside I've been eating here since the 80's and it's just as good as ever. Not so good for you waist line or heart but good for the soul. Combo, rings, coke, and a chocolate cake shake are the way to go here. Of course the dogs are great as well.

  • Rita B.

I come here at least once a week since it's close enough to work. Staff is super friendly. Food is delish. It's always busy but the wait isn't long. No complaints.

    (4)
  • Larry C.

The food here is always great, but the drive-thru service not so much. The last five times I've used the drive-thru I've gotten home three times with an order that was wrong. Physically check your order. Having them repeat it back to you isn't good enough.

    (3)
  • Pasquale A.

I ordered a (single) large malt and waited 10 minutes in the drive-through. No apology or explanation. Shame on management for poor training not to mention crowd control. There were only 2 cars ahead of me. What happens during the busy hour?

    (1)
  • Anne L.

Went here to grab dinner before the Chicago Fire game. Great service and excellent food. Service was friendly and fast. I had the Italian beef (dipped w/sweet peppers) and it was phenomenal. My husband had the regular Chicago dog and said it was great. Also our friend had the chili cheese dog and said it was great as well. Cheese fries are delicious. Would definitely recommend....especially out of towners should try the Italian beef (dipped, of course)!

I can't say I've had one bad thing off of either Barnelli's OR the Portillo's Menu!! Love love love love LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE portillos! And this location is so cool. It's 1920's Chicago Mob themed. Even has a Al Capone quote on the wall when you walk in. and as a former employee of this location I can truthfully and proudly say it is the cleanest restaurant I have ever seen and they constantly sweep and sanitize and it's just fantastic. I guess I could use the good ol' saying "you could eat off the floor" that's how clean it is (no joke). Dick Portillo is quite a genius and after working for him, I look up to him for what a great job he has done and the genius behind his great service, great food quality, and the efficiency methods he has created. He came from nothing and now is no doubt a millionaire who truly knows his stuff. Portillo's Menu I reccommend: **Beef n Chedder Croissant w/ Hot Gardineria - DO NOT DIP IT IT WILL FALL APART!! Bc its a crossant of course. ** 6 inch Beef on garlic bread +sweet peppers+ mozzarella chz & DIPPED OF COURSE!!! **CHEESE FRIES! **HOT DOGS.. get a cheese dog and ask for cheese sauce on it. **Onion rings! I love the fries but I like to ask them to be "well done" makes em' crunchy. **Chocolate Cake Shake- wooooo! gotta get it for sure. or even just a piece of the cake! **Best cheeseburgers you'll ever have. **Grilled chicken sandwich! ADD bacon on it & American chz! Barnelli's Menu I reccommend: Chicken parmesan sandwich - you will be addicted. Baked Lasagna Vodka Rigatoni Pasta! Chicken Caesar Salad Pizza RIBS Monterrey Turkey Club Sub Theeeeeeeeeee end!

Great big place, with good service. Our line moved fast, and our cashier was warm and friendly in taking our order. My friends mom ordered their ribs, my friend ordered a burger and fried. I had the roast beef dipped so good. I really enjoyed myself there with so many fun pictures and displays like trains and other things on the ceiling. Very good food and cool place to dine in. Next time I will have one of their pina colada smoothies!

You can't go wrong eating a Chicago dog in Chicago! My suppliers took me here because they felt that i needed to eat a Chicago dog made in Chicago. I ordered their Hot Dog with everything on it. It was pretty flavorful, but i was surprised that the hot dog was so small. I guess i'm so accustom to eating costco huge beef dogs that i expected to be that big. If i had known it was that small i probably would have ordered 2-3 more because i was still hungry. However, my supplier surprised me with a slice of chocolate cake & it was heavenly. It was one of the best chocolate cake i've ever eaten. They were very generous with their butter because i can see it at the botton of the cake. Every bite i ate I totally felt guilty because it was just that good & i knew my waist line was gonna pay for it, but that didn't stop me from eating every single crumb.

If you know anything about good food, you've probably been here. Portillos is just one place that you can't go wrong. Over priced food is disposable I visit this place on a empty stomach excited because it was my first time there. Ive enter the restaurant confused, placed my order tried to eat it because i was starving. I ended up not finishing it up, throw it in the trash and thought to my self. What was i thinking ! Never coming back here.

Definitely a fast food place, which wasnt exactly what i was looking for but it was good food, Never had a chicago italian beef sandwich so dont have anythibg to compare it to but it was good, little small, and plain if you do not add anything to it. Hot dog was good, poppy seeds on the bun which is different. Fries were excellent. Looks like i missed out on the cake shake according to everyone i talk to, so definitely get one of those.

If all else fails....go to Portillos! This one is nicer since it has a Barnellis where they have pasta dishes, salads , and pizza. I've pretty much had every item on this menu and have been here for probably 200 times.

Conglomerate kills mom and pop. Why give your hard earned dollars to the big guy. Why fork over your cash to the one who is single handedly putting the little guy out of business? Why pay more for what is all around you for less? Why eat slimy overcooked pasta for any reason? The answers to these questions are all around you, laziness. Too lazy to care. Too lazy too search out the best place. Too lazy to understand the true damage the corporate greed machine puts on the local economy. And too lazy to eat standing up.

I hate doing expense reports. They are in a major pain my ASS. And recently our company launched a SAP tool that was supposed to make it easier to enter our weekly expenses. Guess what? It is not one bit easier. In fact it's now more complicated and tedious. And Heaven forbid you forget to enter a receipt and you have already hit the "Enter and Submit" button. I am not one who embraces technology that is supposed to "make our lives easier" because sometimes this is just not the case. Speaking of confusing, trying to order your lunch at this Portillos location is about as confusing as gets. The building houses five different restaurants. There are lines everywhere and menus hanging over places where they shouldn't be. All I wanted was a salad, so which line do I get in? No, not that one. This one is for hot dogs and that one is for ice cream. Ooops, I am now standing in the pasta line. After standing back for a minute and watching the expert locals I finally figured it out and found where to place my order for a chopped salad. Finding where to pick it up was another ordeal. The salad was fine, did not blow my socks off or anything. There was a hint of an Asian taste to it. Might have been over dressed for my liking, but I think that's how they like their salads in the Midwest. There is a Potbelly's right across the street which is my friend Gill's favorite sandwich place. I'll make sure to give that a try on my next visit.

I went to Portillo's in Summit this evening and it was delicious! I had a beef with mozzarella cheese and hot peppers, a large cheese fry, and a chocolate cake shake. I had never had a chocolate cake shake before and was very hesitant as to how it would actually work....do I drink it? Do I use a spoon and eat shake-smothered cake bites? Well, turns out I use a straw; and I couldn't drink it fast enough! Talk about brain-freeze! It was the most amazing shake I have ever tasted. The beef and fries were delicious too. The hot peppers were prefect. Not too mild, not too hot. This is definitely a new favorite place for me :)

I actually like this particular Portillo's than other locations I've been to in the Chicago land district. The employees here are very friendly and always have a smile on their face. The food is really good and the prices here as well is not that bad! This is actually my third time coming back, and willing to come back for.

We met up here to have lunch with family while in town. The beef was delicious as was the slice of chocolate cake enjoyed for dessert. Everyone was polite and helpful; next time, I'm ordering a chopped salad, as I had a taste of my son's and it was amazing!

Portillo's is Chicago's best fast food place. PERIOD. If you don't love it, you should not be yelping. One of the best beef's in Chicago, I love Johnnie's and Carm's as well. Hot dogs-delicious. Cheeseburger's delicious. Chocolate cake, best chocolate cake I've ever had. Never attempted the chocolate milk shake. Their fries are seriously the best. I feel like I shouldn't have to review this. I mean you can freeze their food and send it across the country. That tells you something right there. Okay and what is with people complaining about price??? If you want cheaper, go to the dollar menu at McDonald's. I get a burger, fries and a coke for around $7. umm I call that DIRT CHEAP! Love the atmosphere and the number calling: Number 1- your order is done! Number 2- we've got it for you! Number 3- more Portillo's for me!!!!

For some reason I keep going back and eating here again just because I like their food but after last time I WILL NOT be back. Went there a couple weeks ago, got an order to go...for once my meal was actually correct so I was thinking maybe I would have a change of heart...that is until my boyfriend found a piece of metal in his food. Luckily he felt it in his mouth and took it out before he swallowed it but that was the last straw for me! It sucks because I really like Portillo's food but this location just needs a lot of help!

This is THE BEST Italian beef I have ever had!!! If you haven't tried it yet, what are you waiting for?!?! One Italian beef sandwich, a soda and a side of onion fries will cost you $9.39 for lunch... and leave you full and completely satisfied. mmm

I love this place. I am a bit of a picky eater so when I find something I like, it is hard for me to venture out and try something else. That unfortunately is my current predicament at Portillos. I order the same damn thing all the time as I am addicted to it. My order: an italian beef with fries and a coke. I just cannot seem to order anything else although I've heard and read great reviews. I sometimes find myself longing for a coca cola from here, idk what is in there filtration system thinga ma bob but the coke is so damn tasty. lol. Oh and here's a tip some may not know...free refills (at least at this location) all you have to do is ask. Hopefully one day my taste buds will want to try something new but until then I am prefectly content with eating "my usual".

I'm sure someone dropped their chocolate cake into their ice cream shake one day by accident, changing shake history. Now the Chocolate Cake Shake is the "King" of chocolate shakes! Oh yeah... and they also have the best beef/sausage combo in the world! Get it dipped with peppers! Yum!!!!

I have been coming to this location for years for my grandmother who is now 97 years and for her 88 year old friend. Over the years, I probably have spent thousands of dollars. Today 4/2/12. 10:15 am when manager Bob was working, he refused to give me two place settings. He had the nerve to say I could purchase them each separately. Horrible business for a long loyal customer not to mention anybody else for that matter. Very disappointed.

As far as this type of place goes, spare me. The whole process of scrambling through lines to place an order, then queing up to get your order, is just too much for me. All to get an average sandwich and fries? My friend loves the place, but ...I'd rather eat a bowl of cereal! I've heard the salads are good, however. Maybe next time, I will line up to order from the rather diverse salad menu.

I would have given Portillo's 5 stars a week ago for their big beef sandwich, burgers, and poppy seed chicken salad. Their burgers are the best (my then vegetarian sister stole mine once and devoured the entire thing in minutes). Unfortunately, I got one this last Monday and ended up in the ER with food poisoning. Only had Portillo's to eat all day. Parting is such sweet sorrow : (

OK this is not your normal take out order. My daughter inlaw was in Chicago on a visit and I had her stop by to bring some food from hear on her way to the airport coming back home to Ft. Lauderdale. She brought back Italian beef sandwiches, Chicago style hot dogs, and tamales. Everything was fantastic. For all my yelp friends if you ever go to Chicago this is a must stop !!!!

Waited 10 min on phone to order. Ended up in drive thru before order was done. After paying and waiting in line they tell me to wait 1 min burger machine is broken. After waiting 25 min still no updates. I was so upset I left without food didn't even wait for money back. Food is decent service is terrible. Should've gone to beefys it would've been cheaper better tasting and faster.

I'm giving this an extra star for customer service! Employees were busy bee's here and as soon as I entered they could tell I was a first time so one nice older woman explained the process. When it came to ordering, I didn't know what to put on my dog and the gal helped me out. While I waited to pick up my food, the employees who dressed the trays were funny and encouraging AND while I sat and ate an employee walked by to see how I was doing and even offered to get me a refill! Now this was my first time in Chicago and since this place was closed to the airport, I decided this is where I'd get my first taste. I ordered a Chicago Style Hot Dog and an Italian Beef Sandwich (dipped per the many yelper recommendations). On thing I will note is the meat of the Italian Beef is DELICIOUS but not seasoned. If you want a little kick, go ahead and get those peppers. I opted to not because I wasn't sure but next time I will. The hot dog had a little too much 'stuff' for me. I did like the fresh tomatoes and onion on the dog though. Overall, the food was satisfactory and a nice introduction to the city.

Great food! Poor customer service! I enjoy their traditional fast food items: Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Italian Beefs and Sausages, fries, onion rings, etc. I rate their fast food items as the "Gold Standard" in preparation and taste. My preferred entree is the Chicken Pecan Salad. It comes with a delicious sweet dressing (honey) which brings the entire salad together in a tasty manner that makes you desire more! Their soups and chili are a great compliment to any entree as well. The chocolate cake is the best I've eaten anywhere. Here's the reason for the 3 Star rating: Mediocre service. Most of the time, a paid item is missing or it was simply not charged therefore missing. And when it isn't charged, the proof that the item was requested in written on the bag. Recently, I was informed by a Portillo's employee that salads can now be ordered at the Portillo's register if ordering additional Portillo's items. A customer no longer has to order from the Barnelli's (Salad & Pasta) resister section if there are items ordered from the Portillo's menu selection. Today. my order for the Chicken Pecan Salad was placed at the Portillo's register section since I had ordered additional items from the Portillo's menu. The Chicken Pecan salad request was written on the bag as well. When my order was delivered, I was told to pick up the Chicken Pecan Salad at the Barnelli's section. After a lengthy wait for my salad, I was told that my salad request was never sent to Barnelli's. Furthermore, it was never charged in-spite the hand written notation on the bag. I told them to forget about that item after they asked me to re-order and pay at the Barnelli's register. I did not want to wait additional time for my salad. Next time, I'll simply place my Chicken Pecan salad order at the Barnelli's register to hopefully avoid poor customer service.

The food is good, but the stupid people who wrap everything don't mark the individual sandwiches so it takes about 10 minutes for everyone to figure out whose belongs to whom!! it's simple - like; bs beef sweet - csh combo sweet and hot the manager should demand that the dumb asses wrapping orders for 6 people or more are properly marked!!!

Timing was such that lunch was in order after the silver bird landed before heading to the west side. I remembered this place was close to the airport and hit it today during the peak of the lunch rush. Dozens of cars in the drive through, packed to the rafters, overflow parking with just a few spots remaining. Nothing like landing back on the home turf and heading to an old reliable for a beef and sausage combo with sweet peppers and hot giardiniera. This was almost enough to chase the wind chill factor notion down the road a piece...almost.

of all the portillos in the chicagoland area..im choosing to review the summit location...this was the first location, at least that i know of, that had barnellis attached. Portillos has been my favorite restaurant for quite sometime and i get a great deal of grief for it over my friends..they say..theyve had better beef, better hot dogs, better chicken sandwiches, better burgers, better fries, better onion rings, better mostacolli and sausage, better eclair cake, better chocolate cake.... you know what..i think they are wrong..the only place i know that has a better beef is johnnys in elmwood park...outside of that..this place has some of the best food....get yourself a big beef dipped w/ sweet, a hot dog w/ everything, a large fry and medium coke..you wont be disappointed.. if you want a more fancy dinner..go with the mostacolli (baked is good too) with the sausage and a slice of eclair cake...the freshly baked bread from barnellis is to die for also..make sure you get a second half of a loaf with your order

If I could rate the restaurant and the drive thru separately I would!! I like going to eat at Portillo's. I enjoy their freshly made salads from Barnelli's and you can't go wrong with their Hot Dogs (Chili Dogs w/Cheese & Onions), Cheeseburgers, Tamales, & Chocolate Cake. Their Beef can be hit or miss in my opinion. But... Their Drive Thru has to be the worst ever!! You can be in line for over 20 minutes.. They have their employees out there (in all weather), taking your order before you can even get to the menu board to try to decide what you'd like to get and then you pay another person outside and continue on down the line. You finally pull up to the window and it never fails, I don't care what you order (20 slabs of Ribs or a Hot Dog with Water) and they make you pull over to another parking spot to have someone bring you your food. It is so frustrating. The point of a drive thru is to be in and out. I just wasted 25 minutes and I could have already been done eating inside the restaurant. But, apparently they are doing something right because the place is packed at all times. I just wish they'd streamline that whole drive thru drama.

So there is not a whole lot BAD to say about any Portillo's that I have been to. This place has lots of room to order either restaurant. I always try a new salad and cake of the day... Folks there are always pleasant and smiling. Restrooms are very clean and tables/booths are also kept very clean even at the busiest times. If you are in the area and feel like a shake, burger, salad, etc.. stop on in. They have lots of parking and an extra long drive thru window.

I really like this resturant.....The food is delicious but it is very expensive for a resturant that doesn't have waitresses, I mean the food is great quality but if i get a slab of ribs and my girl gets some paste and we each get a drink im lookin at over 30 bucks... i just fell if I'm going to pay all that money i should have a waitress and not stand in a assembly line like im in a school lunch room, BUT the food is great.

This is by far the SLOWEST Portillos ever! I waited for 30 minutes in the drive thru. It's a shame too because the others are so quick.

Fast, friendly service always! I'm a big fan of the italian beef and milkshakes here. Portillos may have the best fries as well, just delish! A good location to stop at for a bite to eat.

The self-proclaimed king of hot dogs in Chicago, Portillo's, is a staple that has marketed its brand from Chi-town to the West Coast. I remember ordering a couple of hot dogs from there once or twice, but always opting for a Vienna dog from a small local stand. Now, it was time to put the big P to the test with its beef. The result? Quality beef that fell victim to mass production. Read the rest of the review at JayRodChicago.com/708-po…

They are currently looking for new management and it is seriously struggling. The service is so terrible here that I take the extra 20 min trip to the one in Orland. The staff is rude and really "gross". Except the guy who hands out the orders, "Joe". He's the only cool one. If only he could run the whole joint... Save your money, try elsewhere or keep driving to the next one! Trust me the hot dog won't be worth it afterwards :(.

you really can't go wrong with portillo's. everything i have ever had on the menu rocks my fast food world. i really, really love the beef and the breaded chicken sandwich with american cheese. the breaded cod is also ridiculously delish. the buns are always soft and sesame covered. the burger's are char broiled and awesome as well. french fries are crinkle cut and always crunchy and hot. shakes rule. choc cake, orgasmic. chopped salad, faboo. you really can't go wrong with portillo's .... again :) be prepared to spend about 7-10pp.

I love love love Barnelli's They're salads are so good. I really like the pecan salad (Not very healthy but very good) I also like the pesto pasta. They also have ribs and other pastas and salads to choose from and they're pizza is also very good oh and they have great desserts. I think you get the picture right .And if your not a fan of Barnellis you can just jump in the Portillo's line and grab a beef or hotdog I'd recommend the chili cheesedog and onion rings Yum!

Great alternative to the typical fast food places. I love the cheddar beef croissant, cheese fries, and chocolate cake. Those items are my typcal order. If you dont want all those calories, thier salads are pretty good as well.

I love Portillos. It's fast, and great. It is the perfect compromise in my house between dinning out and fast food. I can get a hotdog and fries and my husband LOVES the ribs. They also have salad and everything else under the sun. Just don't forget the chocolate cake.

What I crave most from Chicago can be summed up in 2 words: (no, not PIZ-ZA) Italian Beef. When I visit, I usually stay in Summit, so we hit Portillos on Harlem at least a couple of times...Extra dipped, loaded with hot peppers...yum! I take off a star because when I visited last month, they were VERY skimpy on their beef...very uncharacteristic of a true Chicago Italian Beef!

  • Eric D.

If you are visiting Chicago...this is a good place to get a Chicago style hot dog...without having to take a chance by going to one of the run down Gyro and Hot Dog joints. Yes, this place is a local chain and feels a little "Disneyland," but the all beef hot dogs are good..they put the peppers, pickles, tomatoes, relish and onions on it. For God's sake, do NOT put ketchup on the dog! The Italian Beef sandwich is hearty..and peppery too so give that a try the second time you come.

This is a great setup when you're with groups of people who are hard to please. The restaurant is split in half--Portillo's on one side with its hot dog, hamburger, milkshake fare and Barnelli's on the other with pasta, panini, salad and ribs. This means that there's something here for EVERYONE. I've never had a bad meal here and I swear by the turkey, spinach and gouda panini. The greasier fare at Portillo's is more standard but reliably solid. The desserts (especially the chocolate cake shake!) are definately worth checking out. As for ambience, yes, this location--like all others--does have a faux historical theme that might leave you with the feeling of Disneyland. But here's the thing: each location is themed after a different era, it's a locally-owned, locally-run chain and locals swear by it. Doesn't get much more Chicago than that.

My 6 year old child was strong armed robbed as I dine in by an employee for my Blackberry phone, management was immediately notified and did nothing. One would have had an reasonable expectation of security being on Portillos property and frequenting their establishment. Mr. Owen and Mrs. Stawarz who are both representatives for Portillos informed me that they would do NOTHING to help with the situation because I did not witness the offender rob my child of the cell phone. It did not matter to them that my child was able to identify the employee and offender. It is shameful. Mr. Stawarz or Ms. Owen NEVER once ask about the well being of my child. My child was traumatize by this entire ordeal and Portillos Corporate and risk management said they did not care. The entire Portillos Restaurants and Corporation should be closed down. Children are not safe in their establishment it is very scary. Be afraid, be very afraid to enter Portillo's, for your safety and your children. NOT family friendly.

Basically what I'm going to tell you, you should already know. It's Portillo's. Having traveled throughout Chicagoland, and eaten at many of the Portillo's. It's the same. With that being said, I'm going to tell you why Portillo's is the snip-snap-whikity-wack shit. If you are hungry, this will hit every spot. And it's not that they have that much stuff to order from like you're typical grease joint. It's what they have they do well. Grilled chicken sandwiches, italian beef's, and even their salads are awesome. Though I can go on and on about how good the food is, which it is, but it is a fast food restaraunt. I have extreme trouble giving a fast food place four stars let alone five. Everyone says that portillo's hot dogs are the best chicago hot dog you can find. This is an out and out lie. They have decent hot dogs, this is understood. But to say it's the best Chicago style hot dog I have ever had, definitely not. It's the run of the mill chicago style hot dog. And actually the last couple times I've had a hot dog from here it's been sub-par. Also, they've raised they're prices numerous times over the past couple of years. Now I can understand once or twice, but their pricing is passing the rate of inflation. Now for their italian beef, yeah. They could raise that shit to 15 bucks and I would still need my fix at least every two weeks. So, the benefit about this portillo's is it has the integrated barnelli's, which if you don't know is the place with the pasta and the "award winning" ribs. Would I call them award winning? No. Would I call them good? Yeah. So if you're looking for a not so healthy snack that is quick and not too hard on the wallett, go ahead. It's pretty delicious but also keep in mind, all in all it's still fast food.

the best: try the ribs (on the barnelly's side), highly recommend them. double up on the bread that comes with those ribs, very good. also, the pesto chicken & mushrooms is excellent. the so-so: unimpressed with their beefs. if you ever had al's beef's on taylor ( i'll review later) you'd see what i mean. the clueless: i had a taste for a grilled cheese sandwhich. easy request, right? maybe not on the barnelly's side. when i asked the cashier if they had them, she looked confused & said " we can make one" which puzzled ME. what i got was a bland hard roll with a piece of cheese half-assedly melted in it. blah! regardless of what you get, if you have to get up to get anything, mind your food lest the overzealous busfolk relieve you of it thinking you're gone after two bites of your sandwhich.

If you don't like Portillo's, you support Communism, you pinko. It's just good food. They need to lower their prices a bit, but you're always guaranteed some good eats, so I guess you're paying a premium for consistency.

This location houses both a Portillo's and a Barnelli's. The ribs at Barnelli's are the best. The beef sandwiches are very good. It tends to get crowded around lunch and dinner, but the service is always excellent.
