This place is awful, especially for the prices. We waited over an hour for our food, and it was inedible at best. My boyfriend got the french dip and barely touched it, because it was so bland. I got the seafood chowder, which was OK. We sat in the bar area, which had an overwhelming stench of urine. Our server was friendly, but the terrible food and atmosphere just couldn't be ignored. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place like the plague.

Hiking takes a lot out of you, so naturally my significant other and I were ravished after we spent a day at Starved Rock. If you're familiar with the area around Starved Rock, one, there is basically no cell signal for those of us who can't afford Verizon, and two, it's extremely hard to figure out which places are actually open on a Tuesday late afternoon besides the bars. So, we relied on road attraction signs to point us in a good direction for food. And then we saw the little square on the highway sign that said "STEAKHOUSE" and I was immediately excited. We ventured into Ottawa. Cute little town and when we rolled up into the limited parking spots on the side of Woody's Steak House, my mouth was salivating already! We walked in right as the place was opening. We were the second table in the whole restaurant. Mind you, we were not dressed for a steak house at all. Regardless, no one gave us any weird looks or upsetting stares. Our waitress was super nice and knew everything on the menu. We ended up ordering the duck appetizer, which by the way was amazing just as the waitress had said. I ordered the full slab of ribs and my SO ordered a steak, of course. Both were amazing. My ribs were so tender the meat (which where was a lot of) just fell off of the bone. Our meals came with salads, bread, and we ordered twice baked potatoes. Delicious. Everything about this place was savory, even the bread and butter. Oh not to mention the portions are so huge, I only are 4 ribs out of my full slab and had to take the rest home with me. I recommended this place if you want to splurge and have some extra cash. Our bill was steep, but I had no regrets tipping our waitress well and with how delicious everything was, I couldn't be mad about my experience or the gaping hole in my wallet. As others have said too, this place is stepping into a different time frame. That in itself makes this place a fun night out.

Ordered blackened duck and mushroom caps for appetizer. Duck was phenomenal! I was not a fan of the stuffing inside the the mushrooms, however, but not bad. I ordered the rib eye rare with a side of sauteed mushrooms. The rib eye was cooked as requested and quite delicious. I read a handful of negative reviews about the steaks, but I took a shot at it, and glad I did. If I were to come back, I would like to try to blackened duck dinner. I can't talk enough about the duck. Steak was good too. But the duck .... Minus one star because of cheap plastic liners on tables and outdated interior

After a day if driving and hiking. Wandered upon Woody's. Why not give it a shot. Great choice for sure. Walking in there is a bit of confusion as you are not sure where the check in stand is. But the staff is ready and says come on back here. We choose to stay up front in the bar. More atmosphere, music and tv's. As we look at the menu our server dropped by and said today special. All you can eat Ham or Pork with all the trimmings for $15.95. SOLD. I went for the ham and it was delicious, all the sides were good. I tried some pork and it was equally as good. After 2 plates I said enough. I did have a beer but a $3 a bottle and only bottles not a fan there. I will have to try one of the bartenders special mixed drinks next time. Good food, decent place and worth the trip. I'll be back

Honestly I love the decor if you like that 70/80s style the place is super clean and has this look you can't find hardly anywhere. The good was really good probably one of the best resturants in the area and I had the Woodys Marinated steak and I really think it's better tasting than going to Gibsons in Chicago. There were complaints about the Twice Baked and that person just needed to quit complaining and dig in. That was an awesome potato. The martini selection is crazy insane and I had the parrothead and it was really good. Next time I'm all about the woodys martini it looks awesome! Personal experience I say you need to go you'll have a nice time in a quiet, relaxing environment!

Dined at Woody's tonight since they were open late, thank goodness. The decor was out of date but charming. The service was wonderful and the steaks were yummy. We felt the prices were reasonable since they included salad, veggie and potato - although the twice baked potato did have an up-charge. My husband enjoyed the oldies music as we dined. Would definitely recommend after spending the day hiking at Starved Rock. Thanks for being open late ;)

I wanted to like this place, I really did. We were celebrating our anniversary here so I was cautiously optimistic about trying Woody's after reading the reviews. We waited over 30 minutes just for someone to acknowledge us even though people were coming in after we did and got service. Finally my husband went to the bar to get us a drink and that's when they realized we had been sitting so long. After that we figured we would order everything all at one time when we finally got a waitress to come over. I can overlook the dated decor. Yes it looks like a supper club but it doesn't treat you as such. Our escargot appetizer was good as was the house salad. It took over a hour and a half for us to receive our entrees. Meanwhile new customers coming getting service, such as a family of four coming in a hour after us ordering, eating and leaving before we did. How does that happen? The entrees were ok. The Steak Diane was ok but just too salty and overloaded with celery. My husband's steak was ok as were the baked potatoes. On the second trip to got get drinks, the waitress said she would get them. Unfortunately upon having a sip of my wine, I cut my lip on my glass which was cracked and chipped. Thankfully no one cleared our build up of dishes, I poured my wine into the previous glass and I did not do major damage to my lip. Although cutting your lip on a glass isn't pleasant to say the least. I pointed it out to our server who said she was sorry about it. We did not get dessert because they basically shoved a tray of desserts in your face and ask what you want. No offer of coffee nor did we see anyone drinking coffee after dinner. We tried it, it's off my list, never going back. Nearly three hours taken off my life waiting for something good to come out of our special night. I'm not the complaining, making a scene type person, so I guess shame on me for not trying to get service by being obnoxious. Off the soap box and on to bigger and better things. A real memorable anniversary that's for sure.

Ew, Ew, Ew. Do I have to give this place a star? T-bone steak was $30, paper thin, and over cooked. Waitress was rude, lettuce was BROWN, and when she returned to the table with new salads, she snidely told us it came from a fresh BAG! The ick factor is off the scale in this place. The decor is from the years of President Ford and Carter. They present this place as fine dinning but the chairs and tables are nastier then Denny's. The paneling smells like a basement and the Atmosphere is a bit creepy with such dim lights and chency green LEDs for St Patty's. When you see the Steak House neon sign, go past it.

Despite the mixed reviews, we had dinner here tonight because a local recommended it. Our meals were fantastic. Filet mignon- just perfect... an amazing ribeye... and the Orange Roughy was delish! (who knew??) Cocktails mixed perfectly, tasty bread and a friendly server - what more do you want?? True, this is not a fancy place - definitely outdated decor - but the meal was outstanding.

Way overpriced. Burnt steaks that were extremely fatty. Not great service. The best part of the meal was a double baked potato that cost $3.50 extra and was store bought. Don't waste your time and money here.

I was really pleasantly surprised with the delicious and flavorful prime rib. Sunday is the special: $16.95 for prime rib including salad, potato, and corn. The thickness of the meat cut was just right. I ordered it medium rare, and it was perfectly prepared. Complimentary Bread is served fresh and with very nice butter. English horseradish cream sauce with the prime rib was perfect. My one complaint was the spinach sauce, which was swimming in way too much dressing. Other than that the salad/dressing tasted good. We also ordered an appetizer which came out with the entree unfortunately. But the prime rib was definitely worth it!!

We were in the hood and wanted to try something new. Fortunately that didn't work out, so we ended up here. We were the first in the door as it opens at 4:30. The bar tender was nice, but I had the feeling that she didn't want us to eat at the bar. She asked twice if we would like a table in the dining room. No, I want to be close to the liquor thank you very much. As I scanned the menu, she recommended the blackened duck breast. I have always shied from anything Duck! But my buddy wanted to take it for a spin. Out-Frikin-Standing!!! I cannot remember what establishment so turned me off to duck. But Woody's righted the ship. So as we gazed at the specials, I noticed the two lobster tails for $31 bucks. I'm in. Especially since a lobster was $30 bucks at the Ottawa Wine and Beer fest and you had to eat it at a picnic bench on a paper plate with a plastic fork. Wonder how that worked out? if someone had touched my plate I would have had to stab them in the neck! They were meaty and steamed to perfection. After a couple of Tito's and Lemonade. I was ready for something else. The Creamsicle that was heavy on the ice cream. Not the best I have ever had, but it was hot out and it hit the spot. Now my buddy was drinking martini's and had the veal and the tab came in at $118.00. What? You can find something to do in the area until this place opens. It is well worth the drive.

Woody's is hands-down my favorite restaurant in the Illinois Valley. It has the best ribeye and prime rib that I have ever had--and that's saying a lot! The ribeye is marinated and has a nice char on it. It is always cooked exactly as I request (medium-rare). The prime rib is seasoned perfectly and so tender! The meals come with a salad--pick the spinach salad with hot bacon dressing! It's to die for! The side vegetables are always amazing, too. They vary, but are usually sweet carrots. Overall, it's an amazing place!!!

The first time I came here was great but this time I ordered the chopped steak and it was just an oversized oval shape hamburger. Since when did chopped sirloin equate to ground beef? Thanks, but no thanks. Overpriced for the quality of the food. I also ordered the spinach salad and it was one big slice of tomato with sweet bacon dressing. Really weird. It was like a hot salad.

Went to Woodys last night with my family. I'm from San Diego so I have had my share of good steaks and fish. I read the reviews before coming here and was pretty apprehensive, but decided to give it a try. The decor here, while outdated, was pretty awesome. I really like the atmosphere. The music was super awkward however. For a "fancy" steak place, the beach boys playing in the background was just strange to me. We were seated by an apparently mute hostess. She didn't say one word to us. Our waiter came and asked if the hostess explained the specials and we said no. He explained them and seemed very friendly. I ordered a Cosmo which was very good. I rarely drink vodka, but I heard that mixed drinks were great here. We ordered the duck app. It was the best part of the meal in my opinion. Very tender . Medium rare with a sort of mustard sauce that was amazing . Garden salad came with a house made garlic dressing . Very good, except they used WAY too much dressing. I ordered the Cod Oscar for my entree. Cod was wonderful. However, they used imitation crab which I quickly discovered and pushed to the side of my plate. Yuck. The asparagus they put on top was wilted and scrawny. Not impressed really. Enjoyed the cod however. My grandpa ordered a filet mignon he seemed to enjoy it. Overall, decent meal. Wouldn't be back though. Unless someone else pays. ;) Our waiter was friendly! Props to him!

What is a nice family restaurant with a good party room. Steak is their specialty and they have good service too. The portion sizes are gigantic.

The Steak Portabella was hands-down one of the best dishes I have ever had. The meat was cooked perfectly and very tender. Service was attentive and pleasant.

We often wondered about this place and finally decided to give it a try. I not being much of a meat eater and this place is a steak house is the reason why. I actually kind of liked the decor. Vintage at best but I like those kind of places. We started off with saganaki and made note to ourselves..save the saganaki for a Greek restaurant. It was just OK as it had some kind of flavoring on it that is not typical for saganaki. Hubby ordered a chopped steak. Good heavens it came out looking like a flat, ground up huge side of beef. I at least hoped that it tasted good for him as it was really unappealing. I ordered the chicken piccata with Alfredo pasta. The chicken was not that bad but they should have pounded it down more as it was way too thick for piccata. The pasta was OK but in my opinion not a true Alfredo sauce. Not sure why this was served with a side of carrots:) Husband said halfway thru dinner, lets not come back here again so that answered my question if he enjoyed it. Service we had was good so no complaints there. What we did notice was that there was too much help staff running around. Everything seemed a frenzy like a lot of people running around picking up dishes, setting tables etc. Never noticed that in a restaurant before and both of us found it distracting. Music playing was out of place for a steak house. I did not use the restroom but hubby did. He also commented that there was no door in the restroom. Kind of tacky on their part!!! Pricey for the quality of food that you receive. Maybe would try it again as server said ribs were good:)

Recently moved to town and had to try this. First experience was ok. It's been a while, but I ordered a steak. Service was okay. Food was, meh. But somebody else paid, so no big deal. Second time, took the wife. Had the same experience as someone else here. Was told of the great Prime Rib, so ordered it....Medium Rare. Came out Medium to Medium well. I sent it back. The waitress returned with the same piece of meat!!!! For the price of a Prime Rib they are charging, I want it cooked my way. Don't schlop the same piece of meat in front of me!!!! I could tell the waitress was uncomfortable, so didn't ask again. I should have complained and not paid for it, but I'm not much of a person to 'create a scene'. It get's one star for that service. Food would be a 2. I will not be back here (well....maybe if someone else is paying).

I was here once for My Sisters rehearsal dinner for her wedding and we where not impressed. The most pleasant point of the entire evening was waiting for every one at the bar, we walked up ordered a drink and and everything was fine. The good news stops there everything else was unpleasant after we entered the private room upstairs slow service and lousy food, seriously how can you mess up fried chicken! I could maybe understand if the place was packed but sadly only one other couple was dinning the entire time we were there. When it came to the bill for the food we where charged by the head which should of been fine but they charged us for the room capacity not how many people where actually served! The waitress said she counted 26 people yet we had a table of 8 that was untouched as well as 2 seat untouched at the main table. Only after presenting this indisputable evidence to the manager they dropped the bill down to the proper amount. What else was wrong you may wonder. Ducted taped seats poor lighting (to cover up the duck taped seating?) Poor parking Party room not handicap accessible.

I eat at Woody's on a regular basis and I love it!! The bread is awesome, the creamy garlic homemade dressing comes out on a chilled lettuce salad which is fantastic! The blackened duck breast appetizer is a must!! Just wonderful!! I order one of two entrees, either Steak Diane which is a bit pricey but it is worth it, or the chicken Picatta. They are both amazing, I always substitute the fettuccine Alfredo with wild rice piloff, makes a fantastic meal which I look forward to every time I come. The food is awesome, the decor is old and needs updated, to me the taste of the food overshadows the old decor!!

Woody's offers decent tasting, large meals at a premium price point. The interior could use a refresh. I understand they're going for a vintage feel, but duct tape on the vinyl booths and run-down single-serving bathrooms lack the luxury feel you're paying for in a $25 plate. The service also lacks the attention you'd expect in a higher end dining room. You shouldn't have to continually wait for drink refills when they're charging $6-8 dollars for a mid-shelf cocktail. I'd rate it 2.5 stars. 3 stars for the food and 2 stars for everything else. Tip: I'd go back, but stick with a couple drinks and appetizers at the bar and skip the over-prices dinners.

  • Rachel J.

Well, I don't want to rain on your parade if you plan to dine here, but the service is not the best an I am sure there is a food warmer in the kitchen to reheat your meal instead of serving it when it is done. If you want duck its the place to go otherwise search again, it is not worth the price. A very nice bar area if you do not mind duck tape on sticking to your bottom.

We went here with a few friends for a nice dinner, and really wish I could rewind and change the decision to go here! The decor and design of this restaurant suggests that it has been here for a long time, and would be well established. Turns out it has been here since 1997, and that would be no excuse for the condition of this place. How they have been in business this long is beyond me... This place has absolutely no class. The restrooms can't fit two people, and there is no door on the stall. I appreciate that they actually found purple duct tape to repair the purple cushions with that we were sitting on. And these duct tape repairs were up to 12" long in some cases! I expected a nice hardcover menu. Instead they are laminated, black and white text, with stuck together pages. The service and food was the worst I can ever remember in my life! The waitress was oblivious to any empty drink on the table. However the water was refilled regularly by the younger employees, whose job it was. We had the saganaki for an appetizer. It was to come with bread to spread it on. The waitress came out, lit the cheese after finally getting the lighter to work, and walked away. She said there would be fresh bread up in a minute, but we never saw her or the bread for at least twenty minutes! I had the black angus blue cheese steak, which was the special. It was the worst unseasoned, tough, piece of meat I have ever had. It was a terrible cut with random chunks of fat in it. Half of the steak was rare, and the other half was well (I ordered it medium) I couldn't eat much of it. Everyone at the table had just as bad an experience with their meals. The prime rib sandwich was not even edible. The bread seemed to be a week old, and the meat was disgusting. The waitress didn't even ask if everything was ok when she threw out the entire sandwich at the end of the dinner. HERE IS THE BEST PART One person at our table was actually going to take the rest of his meal home! He said he would like a box, and the waitress took his plate. Then, right over the table in our faces, SHE PICKED UP ANOTHER PLATE AND PUT IT RIGHT ON TOP OF HIS STEAK! Is there just no common sense here? The food should have been taken away to be wrapped in, hopefully, the same dignified and sanitary way it would have been prepared and delivered. All in all, we wasted about two hours, lots of money, and had the worst experience I can recall. Everything is extremely overpriced for what you get. A lot of it seemed pre-prepared. This place has no business being in business.

  • Jeffrey C.

I don't understand how this place is still in business. For the same price you can go right down the street and get food that is at least 10x better and actual service. I wont write a novel about how bad my experience actually was, but lets just it involved the waitress and the manager saying things about the owner/chef that I did not need (or want) to know. I just wanted my food.

This restaurant looks lovely! A fantastic 1950's place that has been maintained to perfection! Our waitress was very nice and service from her was wonderful (thank you Abigail!). My boyfriends steak arrived medium well, it was ordered medium rare. She took it right back, no questions asked. This is when everything went downhill. The manager brought it back several minutes later and said they had put a thermometer in it which tested at the correct temperature for medium rare and the chef would not cook another one. She set it down and walked away. Now we had a very cold well done steak. Our waitress came over and apologized, she was very upset because she was not permitted to credit the meal. We asked to speak with the owner... turns out he is the chef. We ended up speaking with the manager again and getting the steak credited to the bill. She went into a long story about how it wasn't her fault, the owner was throwing things at her in the kitchen and she didn't want to lose her job. He still would not cook another steak... When we got our bill the steak was the only thing credited. They charged us for the sides that came with the meal. I have never been treated so poorly at a restaurant. Especially one with $25-30+ meal prices. We left and went to Monte's to get my boyfriend dinner since he still needed to eat. We should have gone there in the first place. The food was a much better quality for the same price. Larger, thicker cuts of meat (cooked properly) and extensive options.

I went there with a large group of 15 people. I went with low expectations because of some of the bad reviews. I was pleasantly surprised. For Ottawa, il I definitely had a 4 star experience. The wait staff was friendly. I had the prime rib which was good. The warm bacon dressing on the spinach salad was great. The duck breast appetizer and the portabella mushroom appetizers were very yummy. The bread was warm. My fav part was the martini list. Try the blueberry pie martini, wow! The negative part was the chef doesn't know what medium, medium rare, ect mean. I knew by other reviews ahead of time to order more rare than normal. We were glad we did. Me and my husband ordered rare and got medium. Also its decor is old and way outdated. It's definitely a place to go if you are in the area, but don't drive from afar.

I don't eat steak, but the rest of my family does and they really like this place. I've only had seafood and fettuccine alfredo here but I thought they were really good. My brothers, my mother, and my sister all had their steak and loved it. They have quite a martini and specialty drinks list and all of the ones we ordered were fabulous. They have good appetizers and desserts too. We went here on Mother's Day one year and our service was excellent. We didn't have any problems with our waitress either time we went. The reason why I don't give it 5 stars is that the place is a bit overpriced in my opinion but I didn't have to pay the bill, my brothers split it between them. Also I think the place could use some redecoration. It just is really old looking in there and some stuff needs to be fixed. The owner is probably really cheap though and doesn't want to put the work into it. If these other reviews here are true, the guy sounds like a real douche bag. He should cook a new steak for people if he cooked it wrong. I would like to go back another time and see if the service is bad this time.

Odd. Three tables of people, each with own server. Yet, all I heard was " so sorry for the wait" every step of the way from each of them. This place is way overpriced. Let's be serious. In Vegas- sure, a 30$ 8 oz fillet is a great deal. In an outdated place in ottawa, no. My husband and I had chicken dinners, and our two small children had basic kids meals. Our bill was 100 dollars!!! Yes, we each had two drinks, but let's be serious, with a two-hour wait for our food (yes, with the two small children), what else could we do?! If we go back again, which I really can't see us doing, we will definitely sit in the bar area, which seems to be what people must like about Woody's. It gives you that feeling of 60's mobsters have dinner and drinks or something--kind of. We were quickly disappointed as we were herded through that cool room into the side (main) dining room, where we sat at an old round table with old foam chairs that had rips and tears in them. Not fantastic. Definitely overpriced for the service and quality.

Worst restaurant ever!!!!! Avoid at all costs! When we first walked in it looked like a dingy old bar. I wondered if we'd gone threw the wrong door. Then we finally find the hostess stand all the way on the other side of the bar. There was 6 of us and I was hoping for a nice booth. The big room had a bunch of uncomfortable looking tables. So we settled upon the booths/tables across from the bar. The only way to get us all together was to have a giant pole in the middle of us. It really put a damper on the dinner conversation. When we ordered drinks we discovered that there was no draft beers only bottles. I thought that was odd considering the size of the bar. I ordered a bottle but quickly learned that I should've stuck with water because I drank that more than the beer since the waitress never payed attention. The food was really pricey considering the look of the restaurant and the cheap dirty menu. We ordered saganaki for an appetizer but ended up eating it without the bread because the waitress brought it with our salads once the saganaki was long gone. The salads were decent. For an entree I decided upon the fettuccini alfredo. It was a little bit off. It came with paprika on it instead of parmesan. And it came with a bowl of soft carrots instead of garlic bread. Seemed very odd and cheap to me considering the meal was $16. Turns out I probably had the best entree. The steaks were $25 and were terribly fatty and pretty much uneatable. The prime rib was uneatable and the waitress didn't even bother to ask why it was barely touched. One of our friends ordered a salad and the potato skins as her entree. The skins looked awful and she didn't eat much of them so they must have been bad. The worst thing is the waitress brought them before the salads and bread. So we all had to watch her eat them and then she had to watch us eat our entrees when she had nothing. She clearly told the waitress it was her meal. To top all this awfulness off, when I visited the restroom I almost started laughing. It was the smallest most ackward bathroom ever. The stall had a folding door that didn't even close. If someone was at the sink you wouldn't be able to get out of the one stall. The mens restroom had a stall with no door at all. What's the point? All in all, one of the worst experiences at a restaurant ever! NEVER GO TO WOODYS IN OTTAWA!!!

WOW! I can't believe the terrible reviews! I was there last night (2 couples and my Mom) because there was a power failure at Annie's Hideaway and we were all ready for dinner. We ordered 2 saganakies (sp?) to start and they were great. Then, around the table ordered ribs (tender, juicy but sauce a little sweet), grilled scallops (good), blackened duck breast (great), prime rib (a little over-cooked) and Woody's Chicken (absolutely fabulous). We had attentive, friendly and competent service, attentive busboys who quickly picked up salad plates, etc. Hmmmm.....just don't know how everyone's experiences could be so different? I worked downtown Chicago for 25 years and was very used to good food and service until I retired here to Ottawa.

if you're ever in ottawa ( which i doubt you will be) pass by this place! i visited this town over the weekend to see my dad in a body building contest. (yes i said my dad and body building contest) the outside of this place is kind of a mind trick. its a nice looking outside, but when you walk inside its a time warp. soooooo old. i felt like i was in my grandparents basement. they had a pretty extensive menu. apps, steaks, seafood, sandwiches, salads etc. prices were pretty high and the food was awful. i ordered a chicken sandwich, thinking it would be pretty fast. about 35 minutes later i got it. i was shocked it took so long! the chicken breast was so small! no way it took that long to cook. especially since the place was nearly empty! basically, service is slow, food was barely making the cut and it was overpriced for the area it was in.

I also reccomend the prime rib, it is HUGE. Biggest piece of meat I've ever ate at one time. Way more than the 20 oz. I ordered. Really dig the old building. Looked like a place Al Capone and his little killing buddies would have eaten at. Casual atmosphere.

After traveling to this small and remote town in the middle of Illinois for business, we were worried with the limited food selections near our hotel. The hotel front desk then recommended Woodys. I immediately went to Yelp to check out the reviews...WOW. Either people are just angry or they had an off night. We decided just to risk it, and drove on over. We quickly got in and was warmly welcomed by the staff. Although they do lose a star for ugly decor, the food was rather tasty. All of our steaks came out hot, tender and yummy. The waitress was adorably sweet, and even gave me a new salad when I didn't care for the dressing I had originally ordered. My colleague from Texas even said the steak was decent, and he is a meat expert. I'm a fan of this place, and would come back again. Martini menu was also extensive and delicious. Cheers!
