I loved the atmosphere. The quaint house converted into a restaurant is my favorite type. Great ambiance. However, I did not enjoy the food. The red velvet pancakes were very dry. I ordered grit cakes as a side, but wasn't told they didn't come with the sauce described in the entree with the catfish. They were very bland, so I paid more and ordered the sauce. It was just okay. I may go back one day and try the lunch items.

Finally we get to eat our first meal here. Located in the All-American town of Matteson, IL Hidden Manna Cafe is just a short 25 minute ride south of Chicago and a short walking distance from the Metra station. Experience has taught me to take it easy when trying out a menu for the first time. And since it was early in the day, I decided on the chicken wings. The price was reasonable and you can tell from the photo, it looked very tasty. My one issue was the seasoning on the wings was a bit too salty for me. Now I understand the challenge a chef must deal with so many palates. And I have been cutting back on my salt intake for quite some time now, perhaps it was too much for me. I didn't return my meal or complain to our waitress because I felt I could deal with it. However, I did have opportunity to speak with 'Gigi' about it afterward and I feel that the establishment would gladly accommodate whatever your issues were. My wife ordered catfish; it was the sole purpose of our visit. She ordered a second piece because a single portion just didn't cut it for her. I have to agree with her about that. If it were me, I would add the second piece on the menu and adjust the price accordingly. Who eats just a single catfish filet when it's finger-licking good? The place has had a major makeover from the previous owners. It's like a breath of 'fresh air' literally as there have been major structural renovations done that are behind the scene from the public. I take my hat off to the new owners who not only had the confidence to open a restaurant business in the area, but to do it with 'finesse', to bring a uniqueness to the area that is uplifting and yet modest. Please check it out for yourself. We met a couple of nice ladies who drove from Maywood, IL and we're pleased with their meal also and said they would come back again. FAIR WARNING: Business hours are only until 3 PM Monday thru Thursday. They are open later on Friday and Saturday. Go figure! Give the a try and tell me what you think of the place. Enjoy!

Came here for dinner last weekend. When we got there the place wasn't crowded at all. But by the time we finished it got pretty full and a live band was playing. One bad thing was there were not enough servers. Took a long time to get drinks and the food. However our waiter apologized and even gave us one of our dinners free which was cool. Which is why I gave this restaurant 4 stars instead of 3. As for the food. Very good. I'd go back for that reason alone. My fried catfish was awesome. They had flavored lemonade and it was fresh squeezed. My sautéed spinach was pretty fresh as well.

This is a very cute little restaurant. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted with warmth and friendliness. They have several types of coffee drinks. I tried the house coffee which was surprisingly amazing! I also tried the Catfish and Grits which was tasty. My only request would be to make it a little more spicy as I was expecting more Cajun flavor. This place is definitely a hidden gem that proves the suburbs do have flavor!

The Hidden Manna Cafe is definitely a hidden gem in Old Matteson. The ambiance is perfect for a restaurant in a historical building. The owners were able to keep the historical charm while adding modern touches to the decor. The restaurant is comfortable and is larger than it appears on the outside. I have tried take out several times as well as dined in. The food is spectacular! Having lived in New Orleans, I am always on the hunt for a local restaurant that serves New Orleans' style poboys. I finally found that in Hidden Manna. Their Seafood poboy is amazing. I have also tried pasta dishes and was not disappointed. This is a nice date spot and I am told the live music is a nice touch. I plan to come back to experience the live music very soon!

Hidden Manna... How about Hidden Gem! This place is phenomenal! The ambiance is very relaxing and inviting, the server was upbeat & accommodating, and the food was 'deelish'! I had the pleasure of enjoying the shrimp and grits while my best friend had the catfish and grit patties. One would imagine that both the dishes would taste similar with the exception of the fish. However, they both had their own unique tastes and textures & each surpassed my expectations. (I must add that I'm a food snob)... In addition to my food, I had a mimosa which excited my taste buds as well. To finish off a pleasurable meal and great conversation with my "bestie", one of the owners came to greet us and she was delightful! She genuinely engaged us in conversation & shared the story of how Hidden Manna came to be. I certainly look forward to going back for more great food within a cozy atmosphere! ....I hear they have live music on specified days #Nice

Nothing short of outstanding. Came here on a whim, the atmosphere was very inviting and cosy. Service was spot on. Scott was very kind and the owner and his wife welcomed us. The food...I had fried catfish and 2 grit cakes, in a spicy Cajun sauce. $11.99. Then my friend had the carnivore omelette with hash browns and substituted pancakes (2). $10.50. Overall, an excellent place to eat, talk, sip their many coffees and teas, read a book of poetry...and speaking of poetry, they have open mic night every Friday (as well as dinner option) and live music on Saturdays. Come by and try this place out! Support local unique businesses!

A gem of Matteson! Beautifully layed out with unique features only found in this building of rich history. Nice outdoor area. Excellent coffee, its truly a cafe with a superb espresso machine! Fresh salad, and well crafted portabella mushroom sandwich. Reasonable prices. Right near the metra matteson train station and old plank road trail its a great jumping off point as well as night cap. I hear talk of live jazz and poetry on certain days, gotta stop in and see one day! This place exemplifies the uniquity that makes a community special. We must support or find ourselves in the cultural doldrums of cookie cutter franchise, right this moment strip malls displaying names found nationally are built as unique business are literally demolished - but here we have opportunity to tip the balance back to the little guy, who in this case is easy to support as they are of superb quality!

This place was recommended to us from a friends...we went here on a nice afternoon and was pleasantly surprised...the restaurant is located on a side street so its hidden away...the interior was nice an open and just inviting. The menu had an array of different dishes to appeal to everyones taste..I had the portabello mushroom burger which was so tender and juicy..it was fantastic. Overall, it was such a nice experience, our waitress was very attentive, our food and drinks came out fast...I would totally recommend this hidden gem to everyone. i would definitely come back again.

I have been here several times and have never been disappointed with the food, the service, or the live entertainment. Great place to relax, listen to good music, and have a good meal. Get there early if you want to enjoy the entertainment. They have poetry and different genre of music on different nights. Employees are very nice, but the service gets real slow as more people come. Maybe hire a couple of part-time servers, especially for the weekend crowd.

After driving pass on a daily basis and seeing them featured on Chicago's Best had to make a trip! Went there for a late Saturday morning breakfast food was good, hot and tasty. Good service from the waitress. I will definitely be back for dinner. Had the chicken and waffle its the best I've had and I've had a lot of chicken and waffle.

Great ambience, service, decor. Came for breakfast, first visit, and the waiter brought us soups to try, which were excellent--tomato bisque and cream of chicken. I had a latte, which was very good. The French toast and bacon were just ok tho--the bacon was cheap, and the French toast wasn't anything special. That said, I will definitely come back to try lunch or dinner.

Very good decor, personable staff, but the cook needs serious help with breakfast dishes. Today was apparently their first rush and it was sadly apparent in the inconsistent quality of food. After such a wonderful experience on Friday, we ventured there on Sunday, Mother's day. We did not have a reservation and was previously told that we did not need one. It was packed and we were at the head of the crowd, placed in an overflow dining area then served last among the five groups that were accomodated without reservation. Let's start with Friday... On Friday we had vegetable soup (excellent); veggie wrap (a little bland but great with salt and pepper); mushroom ravioli (listed without cheese, phone call confirmation, but it was served oozing with cheese...He loved it, but it was my main reason for going there and I could not eat it); portabello mushroom sandwich (very good - a take home meal); corned beef sandwich (He said it was salty toward the end but would try it again); and chicken bacon ranch sandwhich (He loved it - a take home meal). This pleasant experience, and delicious caramel coffee, prompted a return on Sunday. Sunday was a sad train wreck; the intentions seemed good but the food was not. The pancakes tasted like cornbread, except the red velvet which 3 in my party spit out. His turkey sausage was pork. My veggie sausage never came. Corned beef hash was regular hashbrowns with slivers of corned beef sprinkled around the edge of the plate. Stuffed French toast was smeared like sandwhich spread with mascarpone, topped with soggy processed strawberries. Menu descriptions did not consistently match what was ordered. The staff was overall very polite, even when a member of the party was outraged and not so polite from the service and food issues. The wait staff needs to be trained in certain proper restaurant serving etiquette-when to serve certain things, checking on patrons, explaining and recommending items, and similar basics. The cook, comments from the table...He said, "worse pancake EVER!". She said, "I couldn't believe he had the audacity to put that out". The other He said, "be consistent with the food". I'm not sure if the veggie or vegan meals are cooked with other meals or on the same contaminated equipment, but, to the cook, it would not be wise if you do... I state all of this with the best intentions. The owners are very nice and have obviously put a lot of work into making the place work. There were sincere apologies and the meal was compted after the awkward experience. This area of the south suburbs is in dire need of quality restaurants. This one has great promise and I hope my review works for the good. So, fellow Yelpers, try it for yourself, give helpful reviews and time for corrections. I give three stars to be encouraging. We'll be back after awhile...

Very nice place. All the employees were nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. Food was good and came out quick. My husband had the shrimp and grits and I had the french toast, we would recommend both. I appreciate that they had turkey sausage and bacon as an option too, and it was the best turkey sausage I have tasted. We will be back.

************************************************ Sigh. Today is Saturday, May 16th. Place was busy, but not uncomfortable -crowded. Our server was sooooo slow!! Good grief! We ordered 2 bowls of soup and a couple of sandwiches.. It took her 15 minutes to bring the, soups, claiming g they ran out and had to make more?,! Hhhmmm. We finished our soups over 20 minutes ago, and still no sandwiches. Oy. My husband and I came here for breakfast a few months ago, and I wanted to check out OPEN MIC NIGHT, and dinner... Well, hubs was too tired to go out, so I went by myself. I had the beef brisket special, which was very tasty, but it could use a seasoned a jus. Mashed potatoes lacked salt, but they were real mashed.. Broccoli was done properly, tender - crisp. Now, my server let it be known that tonight was her first day. I believe her name was De Mera... every table she went to, she said she was new. She definitely needs some direction. She took my drink order, barely left, and came back to ask me, what I wanted. (A glass of red wine). I waitressed for 20 years, and she brought back a lot of memories. ..lol. Great poetry from Danielle, the Open Mic hostess, and others...

Decent southern food in a very needed neighborhood. I had the special fried catfish and was not disappointed, paired with bland veggies and rice. I think you could have better sides with the fish. My son had the had the grilled cheese with bacon and Alfredo sauce. He devoured it. My mom had the New Orleans style spicy shrimp and pasta with andouille sausage. She loved it. Unfortunately the service was horrible. Could have asked for more drinks.... You make money on alcohol. Waiter barely checked on us except to bring the check before even asking is for dessert. After we asked about dessert, we ordered but was never offered coffee??? This place should get higher ratings but need to work out the services kinks.

Step through the two entry doors into another place and time, eclectic, beautiful, serene, jazzy, conscious, heart warming, easy going and then there's the food! OMG! Venture away from the basis fare and try the grits and catfish for breakfast.... I had to let my gran ma know she's got competition in the catfish category. ... tender, juicy, and bountiful with a thin crust of *I just died and went to heaven* seasoning, perfectly grilled to light crispy texture.... Also had poached eggs with hash browns and slab bacon. .. Yeah, I went for the full monty double header cause I don't know when I'll have an opportunity to eat again. .. lol. .. On the road again. . Oh and did I mention the grits were delicious? Lawd! Bless this place and keep them strong and prosperous so I can come back here every time I'm in Chicago! Well worth the excursion into the burbs!

Went here twice. My orders were just fine. The food was tasty and full of flavor. I had the grilled pork chop with broccoli. I returned with my mom for breakfast and it was basically, the same. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the owner was greeting the customers. That is always a nice touch.

Wonderful service, great ambiance, and delicious soups are a hallmark of this place! The barista knows her stuff as well. The food, aside from the soups, was fine. Don't bother with the cheap bacon and meh hash browns, stick with what everybody recommends: seafood, grits, and soups. I'll have to come back for a sandwich and a craft beer sometime!

The atmosphere in this place is very nice however the food was very horrible the food was cold it sucked it seemed like hours for it to come we never received some of our food. I asked for additional milk for my cappuccino that was so very rough like tar and I never received it. I ordered a veggie omelette which tasted like over cooked chittlerlings not cleaned. the velvet pancake is a horrible horrible excuse to the American icon, it was more like eating a red CD that you play in your disc player. My husband ordered the soupy grits & shyt Im sorry (shrimp) maybe they can make a better hamburger but as far as breakfast is concerned; over priced very bland, vey slow, dont open the doors untol AFTER 9 AM spot. they need another cook and this was my first experience of going there...there maybe thats why its called HIDDEN MANNA...please stay hidden because the quality & taste is. Or by the way I only tipped you so you can buy some seasoning at the store. And as far as the star rating actually given no stars but I have to tap 1 start and what it to make this post

The first visit was a late Saturday afternoon. Catfish salad was good with basic veggies and the New Orleans pasta was wonderful. Attentive staff, nice vibe and decor. Second visit was a busy Friday evening. Salmon tasty, out-sourced cakes 'meh', service slow and chaotic. I'll return, but not during peak time.

My husband and I went here yesterday for brunch around 12:30. No crowd, only another couple initially. The waitress was very friendly and the waiter for the other table was friendly as well. The menu was simple but the food was hearty and fresh. I definitely recommend trying their chicken and waffles. It was very tasty.

We ate here on Mothers' Day & they weren't prepared for the crowd, but we're willing to try again on a not-so-busy day. Today the service was slow & inattentive. We waited an hour & 30 min for our food & the order was wrong when it arrived. My seafood omelet had been sitting under a warmer for a while. Dining partner's stuffed turkey burger was reportedly tasty but he could have used ketchup. (There was no server to ask.). Again, we'll give it another try, believing it was an off day.

LITERALLY A HIDDEN GEM! We heard about a new place in Downtown Matteson and ventured out to have a quick lunch and gave it a try. To be honest, I didn't expect much, based on some previous experiences after being in Chicago. Was I surprised! The cafe is tucked away and if you don't use GPS you'll miss it. The service was excellent! The menu is not overwhelming but has so many choices. We thought we would play it safe and order soup and sandwiches, they exceeded our expectations. The burgers, soup and grilled cheese sandwiches were excellent. Rumor has it the Shrimp and Grits have just the right kick, can't wait to try it. I highly recommend this hidden gem!!!!!

Had a wonderful birthday breakfast here on Christmas Eve. The catfish and grit cakes were delicious and my husband enjoyed his shrimp and grits. We also ordered a side of salmon croquettes which were absolutely the best. I only hope that they are a little bigger if you actually order them as a meal. Will definitely go back, I've heard the seafood omelette is the best.

I love this cafe! I have become a regular at Hidden Manna. The owners and staff make you feel welcomed and the food is delicious. My favorite 2 things to order is the stuffed turkey burger and the chicken kiev.

While looking for a breakfast eatery in the area, I came across this gem. Upon arrival, we were seated in a booth which was both quaint and private. The whole atmosphere was inviting with smells of deliciousness in the air. Brittni was our server and she could not have been more attentive. She told us of the most perfect roasted potatoes and bananas foster for sides. I had the seafood omelet; it was packed with huge shrimp and a delightful hollandaise. A friend ordered the spinach omelet filled with creamy cheese. To drink, we both had perfectly roasted coffee and well mixed mimosas. I am still slightly drunk while writing this with jitters in my fingers. Sublime! I cannot say enough good things about our experience. Posted all around were invites to live music on the weekends. I can only imagine how amazing that could be. Thanks to all the staff for the perfect start to our Saturday! Will return soon.

Ordered the seafood omelet. Shrimp where very large and fresh and they actually used lump crab in the omelet. Omelet was perfectly cooked.

I always base my reviews on my experience with similar restaurants. So I consider this a neighborhood, informal restaurant. Yesterday was my first visit. A friend who lives nearby took me there. It is FABULOUS!! The owners (delightful couple) were there and made sure things were going well. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable. Now the food.....could not have been better. Best shrimp and grits ever... Very spicy so ask for mild if you can't go with really hot. Friend had a seafood omelet that was delicious (I tried it) and beautiful. We watched all of the dishes presented to other patrons and each dish looked better than the one before. We had dessert which I would peg as good but not outstanding. Cake a little dry (I am fussy about cake). Would like to try southern desserts (peach cobbler?!). But all-in-all, I could not have enjoyed this outing more. I live in Hyde Park but definitely plan to return soon. A REAL neighborhood gem in a historic building. Will look forward to my next visit!!

What a "hidden" gem of a place!! EVERY detail in this recently refurbished historical restaurant is classy, warm and fun. The menu is a mixture of New Orleans, Chicago American. We had the New Orleans Pasta with andouille sausage and shrimp with a wonderful creamy sauce. MMmmmmMmmmm!! They happily switched out the shrimp for chicken for my daughter's dish. We decided with its close proximity to the train station, it would make an excellent "destination" dinner out.

Had lunch there today and it was great. The atmosphere was nice and so were the staff. Checked on us regularly. I had the Let's Wing It which was 5 wings with hot and sweet mango sauce with fries. The sauce was great tasting and wings were fairly big compared to other placed I've been to. I'd go back again to try all the other options.

I am so disappointed with the service. We walked into this cafe and a person looked at us and kept walking. Then someone came a few minutes later to seat us. My husband then requested a cappacino and saw that they were helping other people and not preparing his drink. We were told that they would help the carryout orders first then fix his drink. So he canceled that order. Then we waited more than 25 minutes for our food. He ordered pancakes and I ordered an omelette. No one came to our table or anything until we were about to leave and someone asked how everything was? I asked her do you see any food here? She went to check on the order and NEVER came back so we left. Upon leaving someone said Thanks for coming and the server just looked at us. When I called back to speak with a manager I was told there was no manager and the person answering the phone was very rude. Then someone named Scott came to phone and said he was the Asst. Manager and when I explained what happened it didn't seem as though he was surprised. I don't think they want to fix the issues, but if it does take longer for the food simply LET the customer know so they are not sitting there for over 25 minutes for nothing. Also, please note that it was NOT crowded. It was practically empty! Poor Service, did not have an opportunity to taste the food, no follow up on poor customer service issues. I will eat somewhere else. No thank you!
