The food was really good! Loved the steak and the chips and salsa. Too bad their service is horrible! We had such a rude waitress. She only came to us when it was time to order, didn't even bother to ask if everything was ok or if we needed anything, which we did! We asked for some drinks and she just went and brought them, we thanked her; no response/smile/acknowledgement. If she hates working there she shouldn't be there making the business look bad! Even after tipping her she did not bother to say thank you. HOW RUDE!

Wonderful discovery! Delicious fresh salsas and chips (and a little bowl of queso dip, too). The food was plated so nicely and the service was just right. I had chicken flautas and my friend had huaraches. Both delicious and perfectly seasoned. Rice and beans were good. No complaints here and the perfect excuse to run errands on Touhy.

Amazing. You'd miss the place if you weren't looking for it, but LOOK for it because they're the best mexican around. The tacos are always amazing and the salsas are always made fresh. I'm always afraid this place will become super popular and I won't be able to get a table........

My co-worker and I got carry out lunch here recently. She had already had it twice this week and insisted I try it, I'm glad I did. My quesadillas were perfectly grilled, her flautas were nice and crispy, and it all traveled very well. They are generous with the meat, which was moist and delicious. The horchata my favorite part, probably the best I've ever had (I know that sounds silly, but it's true). I will definitely be returning.

I have driven past here many times and never noticed El Pueblito before because it is set in from the street. I saw some yelp reviews and decided to check it out. It is a hole in the wall taco joint, but a really good one. I have never been to a Mexican place that gave me warm re-fried beans with cheese in addition to the salsa and chips before. It was a very nice touch. I had the steak enchiladas and they were very good, packed full of flavor and as another yelper stated, the rice was excellent!! I brought Christopher home a few steak tacos and an horchata and he really enjoyed it. The carry out tacos included fresh sliced lime and green salsa. This will be a go to spot in the future when the crave for quick and easy Mexican food comes over us!!

This place can give Wholly Frijoles a run for it's money. What it lacks is some ambiance-- there is a strange Chucky doll on the counter, and the plastic covered tables are cold and un-inviting. Still, this hole in the wall delivers on the taste, starting with their excellent salsas. I haven't had a disappointing bite here yet. So if you are looking for an alternative to WF across the street and don't need a white tablecloth for the night, give this place a try.

Ordered a Torta and it came cold. Took an hour. Really? For a simple Torta from a restaurant that is 1/3 mile from me? Fail.

First of all the benefit of going to an "authentic" Mexican restaurant is that you will receive fresh food. Really that should be the benefit of any restaurant; however, that was not my experience at El Pueblito. My coworker ordered the enchilla dinner and I piggy backed on his order with a side of chips and salsa which cost $2.50. My order was missing the salsa and the chips were cold. If I wanted cold chips I could have gone to the grocery store. I called and let them know that I did not receive my salsa and that the chips were cold. Initially the gal on the phone was surprised the chips were cold. I asked could I bring them back tomorrow and get a fresh order (clearly if I was able to leave for lunch I would have). I was told by the female manager in the background that I would have to bring back the food that cost me $2.50 today. Now lets be clear on what their profit margin is on these nasty chips, not to mention the fact that it was their error. I can't come back today but what I can do is take time out of my busy day to talk about how I will never be back to this overrated restaurant. If you want some good latin food in the area go across the street to Taste of Cuba. El Pueblito is not good and their customer service is even worse. And since the manager refused to give me her name there is no reason for anyone from this restaurant to contact me. I was really never a fan of the food but how can you mess up chips and salsa. You won't get my money anymore and when I treat my coworkers this place will not be an option.

More or less just want to second Mike O.'s review as it was spot on. With Whole Frijoles across the street temporary closed & a serious hungering for some Mexican, I jumped on Mobile Yelp to look up the restaurant I noticed across the street - El Pueblito. Based on the review, we checked it out & were extremely glad we did. We similarly had 3 types of salsa, chips, some great beans & cheese and a friendly waitress within a minute of sitting down at our table. We also noticed the very sizeable menu, which had a lot of selection of choice. On to the food... great! Our meals sampled the chicken, carnitas, and steak. All were well seasoned and freshly cooked. The Mexican rice was probably the best I've ever had. It's definitely a smaller place, but the upside was that you could hear your food being prepared - right now! If you're in the area, definitely check it out. They also do carry-out as mentioned, and deliver.

Dang, this was some good eats. Chips were pretty typical, but the salsas were awesome. The chili verde looked pretty standard but had amazing flavor. The medium red sauce was also super tasty. A bowl of dangerously orange habenero salsa completed the trio. I am a wus when it comes to hot stuff, but I couldn't resist this sauce. A spicy, mole / buttery tasting brew that proceeded to burn your tongue off as you appreciated it's complexity. I got the chilli relleno, which if you have read any of my reviews is my barometer for new mexican restaurants. It was covered in something similar to the habenero salsa, but not hot, just tasty. The breading was nice & crispy and covered with perfectly greasy cheese. My friend got an assortment of tacos, one of which was marinated fish. It was like cerviche on a taco, super fresh tasting, yum. I will have to go back before I give it 5 stars.... stay tuned....

This is a franchise related to El Pueblito (Taco City) on Foster & Cicero. This particular location is by Pulaski & Touhy, in a multi-ethnic strip mall along side Babhi Hair Salon, a Korean video store, and Dong-Ah Food Store. Their little parking lot is normally quite full, just like the other location by Foster & Cicero. Inside, there's some tables for eat-in orders, but they do attract a sizable carry-out crowd as well. Their menu is very large with lots of selections for such a seemingly small place. From the moment we sat down, a waitress brought us a bowl of fresh tortilla chips and 3 different salsas: mild green, medium hot red, and a yelow-orange habanero salsa that needs just a tiny bit on a chip to get the message across. It is often mistaken for nacho cheese, so be sure what you're reaching for is cheese before you get a mouthful of fire. I went for the medium salsa, as it had great flavor with some heat, but not tongue-blazing hot. Deviating from my steak burrito benchmark test, I chose steak tacos instead. They are served in soft corn tortillas with enough filler or meat, sour cream, and lettuce to keep me happy. The rice and beans were good too. I cleared the whole plate and felt full but not overstuffed either. If you want to skip the wait, just like at the other location, you can phone ahead, place your order, and eat inside. And finally, their menu has a possible typo. On the back next to the natural drinks, they have "Beef and Celery Juice". I think that's called soup, last time I heard. It probably should say "beet". I'll be coming back for another work-friends lunch at this place I'm sure.

I've worked only a couple blocks from El Pueblito for several years now and it is a go-to lunch spot for me. I eat there at least once and as many as three times in any given week. They have dependably delicious, authentic mexican food of all kinds. Their vegetarian burrito is the best I've ever had... has grilled peppers, tomato, beans, rice, peas!, avocado, lettuce, sour cream... so freaking good. Why not 5 stars? They almost NEVER have any change in the register. I've learned to show up with exact change or I'll expect the cashier to look at me like "how am I supposed to change a $10 bill on a $6 order?" like it's my fault. That part is REALLY annoying. But the food is good enough to be worth it and they do accept cards.

  • Emma C.

Nope. Television blaring with a woman screaming/crying/being murdered on it all evening. No waters refilled in plastic cups even though the restaurant was empty. Food was not bad and nicely presented and I might have gone back for take-out, but over $30 for two mediocre Mexican meals so close to Chicago is a no-go, sorry.

This was a very welcomed surprise to find in suburbia- authentic Mexican food. I realize Wholly Frijoles across the street but I did not enjoy that place. The decor is pretty plain with the exception of the carved wood tobacco statues near the entrance and the deer head. There was a Buddha on top of the pop cooler- weird.... The menu still had the famous "beef and celery" juice and the English translations were not always helpful. Some descriptions include "Grilled Sirloin Fish to the Devil" and Rouse the Dead Soup"... kind of creepy sounding..... I had a beef tongue torta, steak enchiladas with rice and beans and a piece of flan. The torta was so-so as it was cold and the tongue was rubbery. The beans and rice were nothing special but the enchiladas were excellent... possibly the best ones that I have had. I ordered them with a green spicy salsa which was scrumptious and hot. The flan was good but not spectacular. Go for the enchiladas, forget the tortas and get the flan if you are in the mood. This is a good place to carry out from or maybe go to lunch.

I don't know how they are now but when I ordered food to be delivered before they used to rip me and my friend off. We would order 10-15 dollars worth of food and be charged almost $20 I don't know what they charged us for because we never got a recepit. However the food was delicious so we continued to order from them.

So i live very close to this place and i must say. I have experienced better, nothing special that i cant get anywhere else. I have rated other mexican places higher that are not any better. The only reason for the low rating is that it does seem like a hole in the ground with average food.

This is a great place for authentic Mexican food. The place is small, about 6 tables, and rather slow service but it's worth the wait. This is a great place if you're not in a hurry. The prices are very reasonable. I recommend the chile rellenos ( cheese filled ) and the pozole ( pork and hominy soup ).

Very tasty Mexican food in a taqueria-style locale. They have a nice gratis assortment of three salsas to try with chips. They also have very good pork asado, and a good typical chicken burrito.

  • K C.

3 different salsas and pickled jalapeño with veggies alongside nachos when once you sit down to review menu. Ordered the carnitas torta, I don't recall having that as an option to much at other restaurants. So it was 1 different and OMG juicey, flavorful, I like tomatoes & the only draw back was it was one slice cut unevenly- next time I'll ask for extra tomatoes so each 1/2 of the sandwich which has tomato. All ingredients were fresh. Horchata was perfect!

  • Jean Marc L.

I only go here because they have a bigger variety than their nearest competitor but the steak they use in their tacos (and probably other dishes) is full of fat. La carne asada que usan para los tacos tiene demasiada grasa.

  • Tanya J.

This place is a hidden gem! It's the only place that sells authentic Mexican dishes in the area and the food is made fresh and is delicious. Bonuses are the home made chips, trio of hot sauces and pickled veggies served with every meal. Must try!

  • Apple S.

I really like the food at El Pueblito but the service leaves a lot to be desired. I usually order the Taco Salad but in one occasion, my server was an older rude Mexican lady, they charged me $1.50 extra I asked her where does it say the extra $ for meat and she didn't respond and charged me anyway. I came another occasion, ordered from a younger Mexican girl but was not charged for the same meal. I came in the third time, same Mexican older lady, and ordered my Taco Salad again and was charged $1.50. They should really keep their prices consistent and state the additional charge on their menu.

Place is a little dingy, but the food is pretty good. I can't say I like their tacos, but their skirt steak with shrimp is delicious! I've been here several times and the service is terrible. I don't even think one of the servers knows how to smile lol. I was debating between three-four stars I chose four because I really like their horchata, and the various salsa dips they give you. They serve food pretty quickly too.

First time here and it wad AHHMAZING!! The asada and there is a secret menu too, so flavorful! You don't even need the salsa. It was that good! Usually, I have to add the salsa for the flavor but not with this restaurant.

OMG This place SUCKS. My wife and I go to the El Pueblito at 5152 N Cicero quite frequently and love the food there. This one is closer to home and we decided to try it out hoping to have some great Mexican food. So I ordered for pickup so we could eat at home. WOW we were in total dismay when we got home and started to have dinner. My wife ordered the chicken soup and it was horrendous. It was super oily and did not even taste good. I tried it and almost gagged. It also was not even made the same way as the other restaurant prepares it. It had tons of peppers and no potatoes or green veggies. I ordered the chicken tacos and they are dry beyond comprehension and there was no flavor what so ever. Sad to say we will never go back to this place and only go to the one on Cicero. The next time we go to the Cicero restaurant we will let them know of our terrible experience at their other location.

As a local diner, this place delivers the real thing.. dine in or take out.. the food is consistent and delicious. I recommend the tacos al pastor. Dine in, get some great chips and salsa and pickled veggies, with a nice refried bean plate. Try the enchiladas verdes.. Filled with your choice.. Habanero salsa sublime flavor and heat...no nonsense service .

Good ol hole in the wall Mexican resturant. It's like going over to my tia's house to grab a quick bite. They serve 9 different hot sauces and a bowl of pickled jalapeño carrot onion mix. Great place and nice staff.

Excellent authentic Mexican food. The chips and salsa is very spicy and the pork tacos are very tasty. Fast service and very clean. I have eaten there for lunch and dinner and I have never been disappointed.

Not bad for the burbs, better than holy frijoles across the street. I always get the pastor.

  • July H.

Delicious, bountiful food at a great price! I recommend ordering the raw oysters. The horchata and al pastor tacos are always on point. However, the service leaves much to be desired. There's a young waitress that works there (maybe she doesn't anymore) who seems to have a bad attitude; like she hates the concept of working for a living.

  • Devon W.

El Pueblito is the place to go if you're crazing spicy Mexican food. They start you out with a few different salsas, beans, and veggies. The service is super speedy if it's not busy. After dining in once, I might become a regular.

don't be fooled by the small, in the hole place. this mexican joint seriously makes the most authentic mexican food in the lincolnwood/skokie area. i now live in rogers park but still stop by whenever i am nearby. the prices are crazy affordable and the food is great. too many mexican places americanize the food or simply make bland mexican food. this place does it right and i continue to go. $4.40 for two chicken tacos that pour over with meat is a steal. i love this place.

    (4)
  • G. L.

We recently tried it based on the reviews here. Live in Skokie and have driven past it 100 times. We 4 were pleasantly surprised. Fresh lettuce, tomatoes and avocado on our meals. Liked all the free sauces and chips. We all ate vegetarian and 2 of us ordered specific ingredients - veggies were nicely sauteed, not raw or overcooked. Despite lack of ambiance, we'll go back for sure.

  • Ronson S.

Not a big fan of Mexican food but they have the beat chips and salsa and the beat burrito I've ever had. Great wide selection on the menu also. Can't go wrong with it

    (5)
  • Diablo L.

I'll give this place 2 stars because they have a nice selection of Jarrito's flavors, good rice and beans,we ordered 2 taco dinners, steak tacos were good but the chicken and carnitas tacos were dry and very bland almost as if the meat was reheated in a microwave, hopefully it was just a bad day for them or this place really changed because it was nothing like the other reviews....

This place is awesome and (along with Taste of Cuba) a lunch time savior for me at work. Inexpensive and very quick service. I've always ordered some type of tacos and they've all been excellent. Special props to their chips and three different salsas/hot sauces they provide after ordering - that shit is delicious and spicy.

Ok I have been going here for the past 5 years, my wife and I love this place. The guacamole and the beans are GREAT! All the food we have had in the past has been up to par, however the last two times we have gone the food has not deliveried at ALL. I went in yesterday with my twins and I probably won't go back. I ordered a steak and i swear I could not chew and swallow any of it. Seriously the steak was so tough I thought Rocky Balboa was back there cooking it. Yes I usually return the food like that but with each twin spilling their water and being kids I just doggie bagged it and left. So this morning my wife tried to eat the last of it and she felt the same thing. My Invisaligns may need adjustments after my teeth battled for control. The chicken tacos were dry as well. Im not sure if there is new management or just a bad day. Maybe its time to try Wholly Frijol-a again. Oh by the way the Cuban place across the street is really good. Please El Puebilto correct this because I might just come in and buy one steak taco to go. If its good I will come again, if not well at least my dogs will have a lunch. Oh I must say that the waitress was very pleasant and helpful cleaning up my sons water spills.

Have not had one bad thing there! I love their orange salsa. Their conchinita pibil which is hard to find in Chicago is da bomb! I love their steak tort as too. Steak always has flavor,

Really good food. The shrimp tacos are amazing. The haberno sauce is hot but sweet. Best Mexican food I've had this side of town.

  • d r.

Horrible. The pork was not only of low quality, it was either fried or deep fried in rancid lard(fat). I could not swallow the first bite, into a napkin it went. The guacamole was 50% cilantro-had to chew leaves & stems. We paid & left-knowing we would NEVER go back. The salsas.....nice and hot, but one tasted of refrigerator storage, the other was a processed cheese. The beans tasted to be lard based. The plain corn tortilla was fine.

With Wholly Frijoles giving us attitude, we took our money across the street to El Pueblito and were glad we did. Chips and three salsas greeted us, but so did an odd odor in the place. Not sure if it's the smell of cleaning supplies mixed with the aroma of food, but it wasn't very appetizing. The food itself was good though the portions were small. Would only come back if that weird smell is gone.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
