I hadn't set foot in this place in years when I entered the other night. I was the only patron in the restaurant and still couldn't get service. The dimwit waitress (as others have pointed out, the only server working) was busy yapping something faux-urgent into her cell phone. She did manage to say "Be right with you," but naturally she had to continue whatever epochal, world-shaking business she was conducting on her phone, while some older woman stood next to her by the door. Rude, unprofessional, and stupid. I walked right by her out the door, and I don't think she really noticed. Never again.

This is a local joint where everyone knows your name!!! Abel makes the best margarita in the world! Strong enough and actually tastes great. Not like a bunch of mixer in it! Pablo has the best shrimp tacos. Fresh fresh fresh. You can bring the family or a date. Stories a plenty there as regulars are characters themselves. a+++++++

Ive been coming to Abels for a few years now and just love it! Best margaritas ever! The food is really good too. Fresh made salsa and guac to die for! The Pizza is a big hit as well. My favorite part about Abels is the coziness of it. Not a very big place, bar is always best place to sit (unless I bring the kids) and its not expensive like the places its surrounded by. Such a friendly place, which is why I keep going back. Well, that and I may be addicted to the margaritas.

We really enjoy Abel's. Always great service, wonderful menu and fast service. I had the quesadillas and poppers. My daughter had chicken enchiladas. My wife had a taco salad. All great. Combine that with a full bar and I am happy.

Salsa was good, though chips seemed stale. Food quality was ok. I didn't mind it too much. It wasn't terrible, though it seemed dirty. If prices were cheaper, I'd give this place a higher rating

Local, tenderhearted owner who mixes a mean margarita and offers a fun menu. Our favorite family outing for years!

I ate here on a much-needed date night with my hubby. The place was okay ... relatively clean, and the waitress was more than nice. The restaurant is split into two parts - one half is the restaurant/eating area, and the other half is a bar. The folks in the bar were very loud and very drunk, and it was only about 5:30 p.m. That was the first turn-off. Next was my food. I ordered a burrito, and it tasted old and *dirty*. Like it had been in a warm oven overnight for a couple of days. Not anything I would go back to. I live in Grayslake, and I enjoy patronizing local restaurants. I shop locally as much as possible. It would be great to see the folks at Abel's put a little bit of effort into the food. If they ever improve, I will be the first person to go back. I will not make an effort to go back until Abel's cleans up its act.

Disgusting. Looks like a charming store front Mexican restaurant ( a la Geneva's downtown) but once inside you want to run. It had just opened for lunch and there were dirty napkins, crumbs, etc on the floors. Almost smelled like smoke in there. Noticed the bar around the corner, so I have to say it's really a bar with a small restaurant attached. The men's bathroom was filthy. We ended up walking out - fork over more money and go to Vine a few doors down, or pick up quality food at the farmer's market on Saturdays on this street. Seriously, this was one of the most disgusting restaurants I ever almost ate at.

I have no idea how this place stays in business, but it's been there 15 years. Went in with friends to see how the food was, and pretty much got treated like gringo's. Not real welcome. Fine. The floors were a mess, and when we sat down, the table top still had artifacts from the Mexican fiesta that must have taken place just before we got there. How do I rate this place zero?

I ordered take out from here once, and generally liked my food. The steak burritos were very good, as was the guacamole. I was probably most fond of the loaded nachos, they were great. I didn't read Fran C's review before I came here, and I am not a big fan of the concept of reused salsa and chips. Sadly I am under the impression that it is a very common occurrence. Just one of those things most civilized folk pretend don't happen, like the picking up and serving of dropped food. Can't confirm or deny what she said, but my food was very good.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque.
