Holy High Cholesterol Batman!!!!! Dirty Gurt's is a Comfort food Paradise. They have Burgers of all sizes and toppings. The food at Durty Gurt's must be sponsored by Lipitor. Gurt's is located on the main drag in Galena. The interior is pretty cool. It reminds me of a 50's diner. After going through the long list of options, I decided to go with the Taco Fries, and Mexican Cheeseburger. The fries were covered with Mexican Cheese and Taco meat. It was a heaping mess, but a delicious one. The Mexican burger was huge!!! It was topped with three different cheeses and (you guessed it) taco meat. It was a heaping, helping of Yummyness. I ordered the single burger and I could only finish half of it. A double would be a weeks worth of food. So if you are ever vacationing in Galena and have a taste for a Heart Attack on a plate, stop on by to Durty Gurt's. The food is tasty, the service is wonderful and the atmosphere is fun.

Burgers are exceptional! Fries are handcut! Burgers don't get any better! Service was great. This is the third time I've been here and its great every time!

Great hamburgers....a bit of a wait to sit down and to get our food tho....look for the decorated toilet seats in the entrance..people seemed to enjoy them while they were waiting...

If you're into toilets and ugly ladies... I think this place is trying a little too hard. I had a shrimp po' boy and my husband got a monstrosity of a burger with taco meat all over it. The food was decent, but I definitely wasn't blown away. I will say they had some pretty awesome drink specials, $2.95 for an island thunder which had rum & a few fruit juices. Overall, not a bad place for a burger and a drink.

Well, yeah. You know what you are getting with this place the minute you walk in the door. (like you weren't sure with a name like "Durty Gurt's?") Toilets line the entry with fake flowers planted in the water tanks. Signs and quotes litter the walls with such profound sayings as "I never went to bed with an ugly person but I sure woke up with a few!" and "Wife wanted - must have tractor and barn. Please send pictures of tractor and barn." Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk. Yeah, the interior is ridiculous and hokey, and is a mix of a rural country bar and TGI Fridays. The waitress we had wasnt much better, she was trained to speak to us in that sing-song kindergarten speak "CAN I get you anything else while you are ENJOYING your food?" "OH THATS GREAT!!! NO problem." "How are you ENJOYING your food? Oh THATS GREAT!!!!" ugh. So I order what is noted on the menu as the "inferno" burger. And if you weren't sure "inferno" meant hot, they also warn you in the description that it is spicy. When I told our waitress this is what I wanted, in that same sing song voice she says "OK now, this is hot? I want to make sure, a lot of people think this is mild?" uh, what? I tell her its OK, it most likely won't be too hot for me. She looks unsure and goes away. And while it was not hot to me, it did have a pleasant kick to it that I enjoyed. The meat was a bit on the dry side and the hot sauce did help. I opted for a salad instead of fries which was a great idea, since Andy got this heaping mess of fries covered with meat & cheese that probably weighed in at 2 1/2lbs. Probably the best burger you are going to get in the area, although if there is an option for take out I would recommend it. The atmosphere inside can get grating after awhile.

My husband and I drove a couple of hours for our first visit to Galena. I read some of the reviews about this place, and being hamburger lovers, we wanted to try their food. We were not disappointed. I liked the interior of the place and our waitress was very nice and attentive. I had the Chicago Patty Melt (it was HUGE) and my husband had the Obama burger. I had seasoned fries and he had the regular fries and we shared. I will def. go back.

Meh. It was okay. I really expected more after seeing the 4 star rating this place has maintained. We chose Durty Gurts as our lunch destination our second day in Galena. In the mood for a good burger, we were both salivating over the many options on their menu. As much as it pained my democrat heart, I ordered the Sarah Palin Burger. Hey -- it had what I wanted on it. When it arrived, it was piled very higher than I could ever imagine being able to bite into. I had to pick it apart to find a way to eat it. And after only a bite or two, the sauce on the burger was soaking everything -- in a bad way. I ended up having to ask for an extra plate to sacrifice some of the contents of my burger so that I could eat anything. Honestly, it took away from the dish and I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have, had it been a bit less sloppy. Our service was decent. The place is really clean and well maintained -- however, I did feel they were almost trying too hard with the themey mural paintings everywhere. It is like they are just waiting for someone to walk in and say "hey, let's make this a chain restaurant" And while some may find humor in the image of Gurty's toothless, smushed face everywhere, I found it unappetizing.

One of the great places to eat in Galena! Large burger selection that changes every so often. Fun decor. The wait can be really long at times, and the staff isn't overly yes maam no maam but who cares. Their milkshakes... YUMMY!!! It's pretty down to earth so I can see why some people may not like it.. if your used to the snobby type places this isn't for you.

First off, my ten year old daughter LOVES this place. It has a fun, playful atmosphere, although as others have pointed out, many of the quotes on the walls center around being drunk (and the picture of Dirty Gurt with her caved-in mouth is enough to give some people nightmares!) There's also a painting with cut-outs where you can stick your head in and take a picture if you'd like. The food was decent - my daughter ordered the pulled pork sandwich, while I had a burger. Portions were generous, and the service was prompt and friendly. Prices seemed reasonable. This isn't fine dining, so as long as you know that, you'll be ok. The best thing about the place is it's lack of pretension. The worst? The "designed and decorated by committee" feel.

If you are looking for a cheap place to get a quick bite driving in late from Chicago with good food try this place...In addition it has those little kitschy/gimmicky touches like the toilets in the entrance etc. which make it stand out a little more...The food was good (we all shared) sloppy joe, burgers, etc. Check them out if you are walking by and they are open...

Nice burger, good size, just the right toppings, fries were nice. Good price too, its a nice change from the overpriced places you find in Galena. Just good food a little corny on the decor but with the burgers they serve (even have an Obama burger), can''t hate whats on the wall with such a tasty burger on your plate.

Juicy Lucy is what I ordered, or something like that (2 1/4# patties, melted cheddar cheese, grilled onions and topped with potato chips). It takes a big hand or 2 small hands to hold. My wife ordered the Reuben sandwich. Both were really tasty and we couldn't complain. The number of burgers to choose from (and sandwiches) is quite large. Durty Gurt's is made to look redneck-tacky and has 3 toilet bowls (one being used) at the entryway. Durty Gurt's has writing on the walls -- I don't recall any sayings exactly, but think redneck, think dumb, think funny. By the way, no one was using any toilet bowl at the entryway. The flowers in them pots might make parts of your anatomy itch if you were to sit on those pots. I would come back - even though this place is as overpriced as most of the restaurants on Main St. in Galena -- par for the location.

I finally had a burger with a fried egg. I've wanted to try this for a long time, and will surely have it again. This place was fun. The Hostess was very friendly. The waiter was nice and did a good job, but seemed to have no personality. The menu was good. Definitely a burger joint. Two pages of burgers on the menu. I wanted to try one of their Boozey Shakes, but after two blue moons and a giant burger, I couldn't to that to myself. I recommend having the seasoned fries over the regular. They were also very good...

My friend and I went here for dinner after a long day of shopping. We were hooked in by the funny name of the place along with the cheap prices. We both got a different type of the chicken sandwich and loved it! So juicy and tender! The service was very friendly as well. I recommend this place if you're in town!

This is a fun place that I find to be some fresh air compared to the rest of downtown galena. This place isn't pretentious nor do you feel like you're going to be under dressed. The staff here is fantastic, greeting you when you come in the door and very attentive. I had their Greek burger (who's name escapes me) with their regular fries. The burger itself was delicious but throw on some gyro meat and tsatsiki sauce and it becomes amazing. The portion was huge and the food was delicious. I had the regular fries since those are homemade while the curly fries are frozen. Finish this experience off with a boozy shake and it's a great dinner at a VERY decent price.

I love Durty Gurts! I loved the extremely welcoming staff and the amazing burgers with their special mayo/sauce. The signs hung on the wall are funny and tasteless. This is not a dress up place dress down with stretchy pants because the burgers are huge. If you are in Galena you have to have a Durty Gurts burger (any one they're all great)

  • Lynn L.

I recommend for a good hambuger. We ate lunch here in the middle of our shopping spree. The hamburger was good. Unfortunately, I was still so "food hungover" from a gigantic dinner the night before, I was not very hungry and definitely couldn't attempt to try one of their awesome-sounding milkshakes. I will deifnitely go back and give the burger another try -- and save room for a milkshake.

Awesome Burgers. They are seriously about 6 inches tall, full of yummy fillings...and they look pretty too!

  • Yvette C.

Best burger joint! Burgers are massive with delish fries. They have an Oh! My! Cod! Footlong battered cod on a bun. Decor is filled with sayings on the walls and clever signs like "Beer is proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy" Such a fun place to eat and take photos. Their drink specials weren't half bad either. I will def be coming back here next time I stop in for a Galena getaway.

This was your average burger joint but with a bar. We enjoyed items like Feta cheese burgers and Hawaiian burgers with sweet potatoe fries. The mixed infusion milk shakes looked good but stuck with the cherry coke. I would eat here again since the service was nice and fast but need to be in the mood for burgers.

It's a chain but still good. Fun place. Good burgers and fries. Love the strawberry milkshake. Service is good for the most part. But when they get busy, be patient. Still, they're nice people.

A hip burger joint in down town Galena. The service is good and the menu loaded with all sorts of yummy things. I got a vanilla shake and the g/f a chocolate malt (both non-alcoholic). I ordered the memphis melt at the suggestion of the server. I was a bit reluctant to do it since it came with cornbread instead of buns and had a lot fo stuff smothering the burger. G/g got a bacon cheeseburger. My Memphis melt had too much going on and the cornbread had too much butter or oil and was a bit on the greasy side. The burger itself was excelletn - perfectly cooked and juicy. The sweet potato fries

I had the taco salad and my fiancée had a burger. The salad was typical, nothing to write home about. He enjoyed the burger but it was a little too difficult to eat. The service was good. We might eat there again.

Ate there twice this past weekend,WOW,bluecheese burger was one of the best and large. Then the poorboy the next day and that was great also with sweetpotato fries, staff was very friendly and fun.Very casual and quick. Can't wait to go back and try something new.

The food was mediocre. The service was the worst I've experienced anywhere. Lunch took us over an hour and half. 15 minutes after the busboy cleared the table the waiter came out and asked if we wanted boxes(?!?). I wouldn't go back, but at least we tried it.

On our first trip to Galena this was one of the few restaurants we visited, but definitely the best! The atmosphere is comical, though the quotes on the wall may be a tad inappropriate for children (assuming they can read, and actually understand the content). It made me a bit uncomfortable to hear the 8 year old seated next to us repeating some of them even though it was obvious he didn't understand the jokes. Besides that the food was very good. We're not talking haute cuisine, but a good value for the money. My boyfriend and I shared the Portabello 'shrooms (fantastic), and the Olive Branch burger. The burger was really good though a little light on the olives in my opinion, and I was surprised when they did not ask how we wanted it cooked. Despite that it was cooked perfectly! We also had a bowl of chili which didn't have much heat - but I like that, and in my opinion was only so-so; somewhat on the bland side, and almost too sweet. I, however, had the Tuscany Gold soup (a cream based soup with sausage, potatoes, and other veggies) which is by far the BEST soup I have ever had in my life! Perfect flavoring! We didn't try the shakes, but the table of 5 next to us all had one and absolutely loved them (the non-alcholic versions) The service was very good (the owner came over several times to see how things were, and we had a lovely chat with her upon our departure), the servers didn't seem too knowledgable about the menu, but were very friendly. My one concern as far as service was that the restaurant was fairly empty (it was a Sunday evening and all the surrounding stores were closed), and they sat all three of the groups present in the same small corner at the front. All in all it was a wonderful dinner and we will definitely go back!

They served my boyfriend and me the best damn vegie burgers i have ever tasted. I got the Inferno vegie burger and the waitress warned me that it was very hot, but being the biggest Mexican I am, I still picked it and let me tell you even though it was not the hottest food i've ever eaten it was delicious, I loved this place

what a funny and cute place! we had lunch here on our last day. we had just come back from hiking and were looking for something delicious and quick to eat. they're basically a burger type place. they have apps, drinks, and a pasta dish or two. we started off with a cup of gumbo, which was alright but nothing special. i had the mushroom swiss chicken sandwich with seasoned fries and the bf had a cheddar burger with homemade fries. the fries were good, both ways. i enjoyed my chicken sandwich and he his burger. a little kitsch, some good food, and a fast visit. that's all i usually want from lunch :P

Best Reuben Sandwich I have EVER had. I travel the 2 hours once to twice a year just to get a taste of one. The atmosphere is fun, and the service has always been quick and friendly.

I absolutely loved this place. It was last day in Galena and it made it really hard to leave. I love Galena and this is one of the many unique experiences that make it all the more special. From the funny face pictures, to taking your own picture with the cut outs on the back wall. I would recommend this to everyone.

If you visit Galena and you're looking for a monster sized burger in a fun atmosphere, look no farther. My kids beg me to take them here for lunch when we're in town followed by the candy store. The service is excellent, the food enormous and the atmosphere is engaging. It can be pricey, but considering the largest sandwich has 4 hamburgers on it...its worth the money.

Great burger joint on main street in Galena. Very casual atmosphere with great food. Had the portabella shrooms appetizer, excellent lightly breaded meaty mushrooms served with ranch dip. Sister had the Memphis melt served on jalapeno cornbread with pepper jack cheese, and couldn't stop raving about it. Other sister had the Wop Chop, which was a bread pork tenderloin, and it was huge & delicious. I had the Greektown burger, which has gyro meat, feta cheese, & taziki sauce, served on a pretzel bun, it was excellent. Sandwiches & burgers come with regular fries, sweet potato fries, or salad. The sweet potato fries are cut in circular coin shape, and were delicious. The also have fried fish, soups & salads. Service was good. It's a pretty solid choice when you're in Galena.

This is one of our favorite places to eat when visiting Galena. It's great casual, summer-time dining. The inside is intentionally decorated with red-neck sayings, decor, etc. which make it a playful place perfect for kids and grown-ups. The food is by far the best around. Hamburgers are excellent, but their fish -- oh my! It's outstanding. Their salads, especially the chicken apricot salad with raspberry vinaigrette is very tasty, especially on a hot summer day. Love this place and highly recommend it!!!

Ordered burger to take out. It was very dry. I don't know how others can give such good reviews. My wife had a salad that was good. I would have been better off going to McDonalds.

This was a fun restaurant with great burgers! My favorite part of my whole experience was the atmosphere. I enjoyed walking around the building reading the different signs along the walls. It was also fun to see the kids pop their heads into the Durty Gurty photo cut out on the back wall of the restaurant. I ordered a regular burger with sweet potato fries. If you like sweet potatoes, then these fries are a must order!

We stopped in for an early dinner on a Tuesday night. Fun atmosphere, friendly waitress, good food and plenty of it. I had the California melt which is tuna on jalapeno cornbread. It was good, but the only complaint I have about it, is that it definitely wasn't cornbread. Cornbread is that yellow bread made from cornmeal. This was like a sourdough sliced bread with flecks of jalapeno in it. So why they call that cornbread is beyond me. Husband had the grouper sandwich which was huge and he said tasted good. We both had the sweet potato fries, which are not your typical long, squared french fry type fry - they were sliced in coin shapes. Really good taste, but half of them were burned to a black crisp. Good place for a casual, filling dinner.

A fun place in Galena, different vibe than some of the other places right around it. We had a big group and called ahead with our name. There was a mixup and when we got there, we waited a bit more, not a biggie. We sat at the bar and got drinks. They do have alcohol, it's just hidden. That's a good idea, I think? The alcoholic shakes are different and yummy. Not for me, but the people I was with loved them. Now my buddy who we went with had gone here a couple days prior with his family. He said he liked the burger, but wasn't blown away. I still wanted to get it. I got the Inferno burger, no tomatoes. I asked the waitress how do they normally cook their burgers, and she said medium-well. Okay. I took a bite and really enjoyed it, but not perfect. For sure overcooked, not much juiciness to the burger itself. The toppings were great; really liked the inferno sauce, whatever the heck it was. Kinda has a Marinara sauce consistency, but doesn't taste like, I swear. I asked the waitress about the burger and she said she would have cooked it a different temp if I wanted. Guess I didn't know? I think they should ask. But I guess most people who come to Durty Gurt's like a burger medium-well. Not used to that personally, I go medium-rare, all day, every day. Easy answer. Anyways, good place. Our waitress was funny and the older lady at the front (do I dare call her Durty Gurty?) gave us the line and laugh of the day...let's just say I didn't expect those words to come out of her mouth! Other food though: the patty melts looked amazing. Oh yeah, I went with the seasoned fries. Get them, not the regular.

I really wanted to give this place a higher rating. The inside is a pretty neat setting with vintage Chicago decorations. Our greeting by the manager was not very welcoming, rather a brass "how many?" We ordered appetizers and drinks...The server came back to take our order, but as my wife was asking a question she turned and walked away saying she was paged. She came back a few minutes later with our appetizers. It seemed kind of rude. We ordered off a menu of several custom burgers...but rather overpriced for what you get. Our meal came and we started in. For the most part it was good burgers with specialty toppings. The bacon on my son's burger was nearly raw, but the server never came back until everyone was done. When it was mentioned, she shrugged it off and asked if we wanted to take it to go since it was a full sandwich. When we paid the manager never asked whether everything was okay. Sometimes even good food is ruined by bad service.

This was our first stop for chow in town. I looked at the reviews and it seemed ok. I ordered the California melt. Albacore tuna salad on grilled jalapeno corn bread. The sandwich was fantastic. The thick corn bread clinched the deal. But, I thought that the menu said that it had an egg in it. None to be found and the web menu doesn't show it. I know it's on there. Just not on the sandwich. The sweet potato chips were well done. I have never seen such small tots, but they gave you a plate full. Good service and a great value for being on tourist trap blvd.

This is my favorite restaurant in downtown Galena, it makes me wish I lived in Galena. We arrived for lunch with a group of 8, we arrived at a great time because we were seated promptly. This was probably the fastest I ever sat down at Dirty Gurt's. The menu here contains many things that could give you a heart attack! The burgers are their specialty, but they do have many other very good sandwiches. I chose the olive burger on this day, it was cooked perfectly and tasted awesome!i have yet to try the shakes, but the look delicious! Dirty Gurt's is the place to go in Galena!

My wife and I stopped in here for a burger on a recent trip to Galena. Not really sure how it got a four star rating. The toilets in the entry are gross, but ha ha your trying to be funny. The food is a big disappointment the burger was tough and definitely preformed frozen type. 5 Guys makes a much better burger. The fries and onion rings were OK and the service fine but I couldn't get over the poor quality of the burger. Seems like lots of other options in town.

Giving it a 5. Place is clean the decor is awesome. The food is great. The portions are more than most could eat, which is what I like can always take some home, right. The service is very friendly and quick to get to you. Prices are normal for Galena.

The highlight of my meal at Durty Gurt's was watching my toddler eat, nay - shovel, applesauce like a machine. I'm sure Durty Gurt's applesauce is nothing out of the ordinary, but according to my daughter it was sent from the gods. Beyond the bucket of applesauce that my kid consumed (along with half of her kid's burger), husband and I enjoyed the swift service we received here. It's a pretty casual locale - friendly for bikers and kids alike. We started out with the cheese curds - $6.99 for a medium size basket of plain curds. And by plain I mean plain. They didn't have much flavor and they don't come with any sauce, thus we ordered some ranch to spice it up a bit. As for my meal, I went with the San Francisco melt sandwich - grilled chicken, bacon, melted swiss, grilled onions and Southwest sauce on grilled sourdough bread. My meal was sizable but like the curds, I wasn't bowled over by flavor in the sandwich or the sweet potato fries that accompanied it. It was certainly enough to fill the void, but no noteworthy tastes. Durty Gurt's is a welcome respite for folks and those with kids who need to feed their little ones *rightnow* but the food itself wasn't anything that I'd write home about.

My friend had his birthday weekend celebration at Galena, IL and we stumbled upon this place with a quick search on Yelp. The pictures looked promising and there were not many other options that came close, so we all decided to come here. I had a hard time choosing a burger because they all seemed so good, but I ended up with the Tombstone Burger. Overall the burger was juicy and good, but I had better. It was good, but there wasn't that "Wow" factor to it. The patty tasted a bit frozen. We also had the Chicken Wings, which I thought was just okay. The seasoned fries that came with the burger was really good. The best thing about our meal here was probably the shakes! We had the Peanut Butter Shake and it was off the chain.

This was our first weekend in Galena and we actually picked Durty Gurt's based on its Yelp reviews. We had a party of 10 and were easily accommodated for at a table. Everyone ended up ordering burgers and we were all satisfied with the variety of choices, (chili with cheddar cheese atop french fries burger was a favorite). It was satisfying to have different options for fries, including seasoned and sweet potato fries at no additional cost. The ambiance is playful and our waitress was extremely kind and attentive. Table, floors, and bathrooms were clean to my liking. We will be back next ski season!

Fun, family, casual type place with tons of burgers and wraps. The interior is decorated with funny sayings and images, and my kids (and I) had a good time checking out everything. I had a patty melt which proved to be enormous and delicious. I also had a cup of navy bean & bacon soup, which was delicious. My husband had a burger, which he said he was good, and my kids had chicken fingers, which they enjoyed. For dessert we all had an ice cream sundae - also very good. Friendly, efficient, helpful service as well. Would go back.

Great location, the toilets at the entrance; I get the joke but kinda repulsing I'm here to eat. Service was great, nothing special about the food you can get 1/2 pound burgers anywhere and their salad I think it came from a plastic bag you know the kind you can get in any grocery store if you don't feel like cutting your own fresh vegetable. Very pedestrian no passion in their ingredients.

Good burgers! Large portions will have you reaching across the table to taste all that Durty Gurts has to offer. Loaded cheese fries make for a nice appetite warm-up. Durty Gurts is a Galena must for big appetites.

Came here this past weekend with my family while visiting Galena for the weekend. Wow the burger's were huge. and good too. normally, I don't like mayonaise or sauce on my burgers, but whatever sauce they put on my burger was pretty damn good. it kinda tasted like a milder version of big mac sauce. Also, my burger was so big, that I only could eat half in the restaurant and the other half later in the day when we got back home.

I've been here on several occasions and it is what it is, a tourist town establishment. They do however have a large variety of excellent hamburgers. I've always had decent service and it's always been clean. The burgers are good, but you'll feel weighted down if you still plan on doing a lot of shopping. Overall I'd say it's worth the stop.

Awesome food! Service was great too. From music to atmosphere it was great. Split pea soup had real bacon and was very tasty! Sweet potato fries great addition to burgers. Bloody Mary was fantastic too! We each had burgers and added Swiss-portabella mushrooms as well as bacon-cheese, they were amazing!

Great decor in the restaurant and it was a fun Halloween weekend to come into this place. All the staff were in costume and service is very friendly. It's a great burger joint and I enjoyed the Chicago Paddy Melt with just enough cheese with grilled onions served with my choice of seasoned fries. I also got a taste of my friend's Tombstone burger which was super duper big with great thick onion rings which I loved and the barbecue sauce did not over power the hamburger and bacon! They also have a full service bar with daily specials and great selection of shakes and malts and root beer floats.

Service sucked. The waitress was working waaaay to many tables. It was a decent place but took forever for us to get our order placed. Typical bar/restaurant type of place. The saving grace.. Food was great. (Food alone rating would be much higher) Had the Greek burger with turkey instead of beef. Kitchen rocked it! Nice job kitchen guys/gals!!

Awesome burgers! Patty melt was excellent. Next time I will try it with sour dough bread. Decor is entertaining. Place is clean and service great. Iced tea was a little weak but was okay. Loved the home made fries.

What a great find. Got to Galena on Thankgiving Eve and went to Main Street to find something to eat. Obviously we arrived right before they closed but got no attitude for that. Very friendly. Ordered basic burger with mushrooms and wow. It was humongous. And delicious. We shared it and that was plenty. I'm a tough grader so 4 stars from me is like 5 from most.

Great casual family restaurant. Good burgers and sandwiches. Very generous portions. Nice place to bring kids. We have always had friendly and attentive servers. I love the California Melt (tuna salad melt). Beer is cold too!

I really didn't know what to think about Durty Gurt's. It has the look and feel of one of those corporate kind of places with all the logos. There are various depictions of Gurt herself along with various folksy sayings on the wall (most involving alcohol). (Looking later online, there doesn't seem to be another Durty Gur'ts.) But I wanted a burger and the menu descriptions looked tempting. We both ordered burgers - I got the Santa Fe (guac, jalapenos, and pepper cheese). She got the olive burger - they weren't shy with the olives. The burger were good and required a balancing act to eat without knife or fork. The homemade fries were quite tasty. For the most fearless among us they also offer a 2lb hamburger and a 2ft hot dog. A 2 ft dog? Overall, its a good burger in a kitschy restaurant.

From the get go this place was a disappointment. We came in with a party of nine and were told it'd be a half hour wait. No big deal we waited and then got our table. Unfortunately we were split up. Six at one table and three at another. They said we couldn't slide the tables together. We said fine and just decided to eat. We ordered the hamburgers since they all sounded delicious. At $10 to start you'd think they would be great. They turned out to be ok. Frozen pre formed 1/2 pound patties. Two of our friends shared a burger and asked the waitress for a knife so they could cut the burger in half. The waitress responded "we don't have knives here". So our friends tore the burger in half and the waitress responded " jeez I was just kidding". This place is a joke! Go somewhere else in this fun town.

This place has decent food if you aren't looking for pricey dishes but don't want to settle for bar food. It could use some updating and a good scrub but it's definitely not the worst place in Galena.

Went there this evening with my friends before heading back home to Chicago. This place was DELICIOUS! The burgers were HUGE, so the $10.99 I spent felt well earned. The meat tasted super fresh & my burger ordered well done was cooked perfectly! The decor on the inside is a little on the weird side, but I get that's the theme they're going with. Overall, a very satisfied customer!

This place has horrible service. My husband and I stopped to eat here after a couple suggestions from locals around area. I personally never write reviews good or bad about places, however I felt compelled to warn anyone who passes this place or who are referred to this place. STOP GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Not only was the service bad but food was disgusting. We started out with cheese curds how you can mess up cheese curds is beyond me. First we received our cheese curds with an empty condiment dish and they consisted of fried dough and a pinch of cheese in middle. When we asked what was suppose to go in dish our server laughed and said sorry ranch is suppose to be served but they sometimes forget it and turned and walked away. I figured she was going to get missing ranch but no she continued serving other tables. I was shocked so I had to ask bus boy for ranch and he was very nice got the ranch which made no difference to taste of cheese curds they were still bad. I thought ok burger joint has to have good burgers boy was I wrong. Everyone that said burgers were tasteless and were plain run of the mill frozen patty was completely right. McDonald's would give this place a run for their money no joke. People that said the burgers were big were right as well they put a ginormous bun on burger to dress up a frozen burger is my best guess on why they thought they were huge. Not really sure about you but I would take a burger the size of McDonald's if it was going to be yummy, rather than an over sized bun, frozen, unseasoned patty any day and did I forget to mention HORRIBLE SERVICE.

What a disappointment. The menu notes that you may substitute a chicken filet in place of a burger patty at no extra charge, what a delightful surprise. What it fails to mention is that it's cooked and frozen, then thawed and warmed. The texture was that of a recycled tire and unable to be so much as bitten into, let alone chewed. The waitress was a little too busy chatting with coworkers at the bar to notice the looks of disgust on our faces. The food was a a disaster and the hospitality was disingenuous and a script repeated at every table. $30 later my advice to the reader is to pass on by; there are a dozen deserving places on Main Street for a fresh meal.

Went here for lunch. Had double bubble burger medium rare it was great. Grab some napkins. You will need them. Sweet potato fries are really slices not fries, but are still good. Decor is fun for family

Great food! The Greek town burger was amazing! A little on the spendy side but the burgers and fry share are huge! My boyfriend got the belly buster.... First time i have ever seen him have to cut a burger in half to eat it! Our waitress was very helpful and on top of her game. If you leave here hungry, its your own damn fault!

Really good place for burgers and fries. Large portions so if you're hungry this is the place. Don't be alarmed by the toilet bowls in the foyer as you enter, just a photo op. Enjoy, my fellow yelpers.

Fantastic burger! Went here based on a few reviews and was not let down! Started with some of the Mac and cheese bites that me and my wife thought were a nice delight and also ordered 2 of the speciality burgers, the city diner and the Santa Fe. The burgers came out with a whopping amount of fries we couldn't even finish, and a burger that would suit anyone's needs! Fantastic spot that I would highly recommend for any burger fanatics!

My wife and I went here for lunch on our second day in Galena. We had met another couple that highly recommended it with the caveat, "only for the burgers." We had seen it a couple of times as we had been about town and joked about not eating at some place with a name like "Durty Gurt's". Based on the recommendation and our own curiosity we decided to give them a try. The atmosphere was a little over the top, but it was fun. The service was quick and polite. They had a nice selection of burgers. I ordered a Southwestern burger, my wife ordered one that had a fried egg on it. (I'm sorry I don't remember their names, probably because we went into a food coma eating them). When they came out to the table these burgers were HUGE! I had to take a picture to send to some of my friends. It was a good 5-6 inches thick. Mine tasted amazing, probably one of the best burgers I've had from a restaurant. My wife enjoyed her's, but agreed mine tasted better. (I let her take a bite, it was Valentine's weekend afterall!) We didn't get anything else, heck, we couldn't finish our burgers. I wouldn't take the hour and a half drive to get there just for the burgers, but I would definately stop in the next time I'm in town.

Came here on a road trip to Chestnut Mountain. Had a blast snowboarding, but then became very hungry. We decided to check this place out, since we wanted burgers and this place did not disappoint! The service was okay, but the burgers here was delicious! I ordered the Obama Burger with seasoned fries. It had pineapple slice, 1/2 lb burger patty, tomato, lettuce, and cheese. The burger patty was very tender and the ingredients added a juicy taste. This place also has a $24 burger that contains 4 1/2 lb burger patty. It might sound expensive, but it also comes with a t-shirt with Durty Gurt's sexy logo on it ;) This place was a fun sit-in restaurant, with many funny props and writings on the wall. Overall, I enjoyed the atmosphere and the food here. If you're visiting here from out of town, then definitely give this place a try.

Echhh... It's an OK place, nothing more. Service was poor from waitress with an attitude. Waiters and waitresses kept coming up to the front register adn counting out thier tips...tacky. Food was fair/good at best. The ambiance is pretty cool, if only the service had been better. Portions size is LARGE.

Blegh! My honey and I were visiting Galena for the first time and were in the mood a tasty, juicy burger. After asking around, we were recommended this place. There was a wait of about 15 minutes, but that's okay if the food is worth it. Once seated, we ordered and waited... and waited... and waited. Finally, the burgers arrived. To our surprise and dismay, the beef was bad quality - cheap meat that's been grinded to burger meat. The meat was nasty. C'mon, people. If you're calling card are your burgers, they better be good! We ate the okay fries and left hungry. What a let down. Galena is a cute town to visit, with LOTS of restaurants and choices. Find another choice.

I thought that the girl that recommended this place (my first night at Galena in 2012) was nuts. I should have listened to her advice sooner. This place has awesome tasting burgers and fries. I loved reading the signs around the walls, too. We even took pictures next to the toothless woman and on the toilet in the front! So memorable and fun!!

Better than average burgers, but I wouldn't go as far to say they were excellent. The sweet potato fries were very good. The decor was fun and interesting. Service was just average.

  • Terri R.

This place was mediocre considering all the hype. Yes, they do have an extensive burger menu but only salads as an alternative to the non-burger person. We had one person in our group who was trying to eat healthier. I had the Southwest burger and my husband had the Milwaukee burger. Both kids had regular cheeseburgers. Our friend had the pulled pork burger (without the bun) and another had one of the specials. The food was pretty good but our waitress was a ditz and had no sense of humor AT ALL. If we had better service I would have given them a three. I don't consider this a place to go out of your way to visit and probably won't be going back.

Ah Durty Gurt's is one of the few fun and quirky eateries in downtown Galena [AND kid friendly]. If you've been to Chicago, picture the silly humor of Ed Debevic's without the witty waiters. When you enter you'll walk past a small waiting room in which toilet seats replace chairs, a "suggestions box" toilet and walls covered in smart alec quotes. Definitely cute, even though I expected the ambiance to be a bit more exciting. Don't pass up the alcoholic infused milk shakes to get your brain spinning in order to choose which burger you got a taste for. Gurt's has about 20 burgers to choose from, among other non-burger dishes. You can always choose a chicken breast or veggie burger over beef. No matter which meat you choose, you can be sure that your burger will stand super tall. Not only that but all choices come with a side of fries OR I'd recommend getting the sweet potato fries!! D-Lic! If you're not stuffed by the huge portions, dessert ain't a bad idea either (or if you didn't end up getting a milkshake, do it then at the end).

Kitschy motif but we had a good time laughing at the quotes on the wall and funny photos. I also loved the old school TV upfront and enjoyed the cashier's story of being a young girl when that TV was brand new. The turkey burger on special turned out to be one of the best turkey burgers i've ever had (seriously). It was topped with stuffing, cranberry mayo and came with sweet potato fries. So good! Like Thanksgiving on a bun. The waitress was nice, nothing spectacular but she got the job done. Prices were reasonable and I loved my food so i'm a happy camper. I will definitely stop back and visit Gurt when in town again.

Great place if your looking for something on the casual side in Galena. My wife and I have dined there several times while visiting, and now we don't even need to decide where to have lunch. Clean, friendly staff and very favorable prices. You will not leave hungry either, so do your downtown snacking before dining!

This is a great place to find a 1/2 pound burger! The menu has many different ones to choose from including a few that are 2 pounds! If you attempt it, you get your picture taken for the wall! The portions are huge and the food is great. Atmosphere is campy and country with many different signs on the wall to entertain. The prices are what you expect in a tourist area...around 10 bucks for a huge burger and side. Recommend going for the food and the experience

My husband and I ate lunch here and had a great meal. My husband ordered an entree salad, which was delicious and the chicken on it was moist/tender. I had a bowl of chili and a salad and both were very tasty.

Mmmmm milkshakes! We needed a sweet treat and after finding each wine place that said it opened at 4- not open, we needed milkshakes. The gals were great. Shakes were fantastic. Folks were coming in left and right and everyone loved their burgers, soups, and bacon cheese fries. Next time we're back I'm goin' for a burger!

I really liked Durty Gurt's. I'm giving it 5 stars b/c it's in a tourist part and is very unpretentious while delivering at the same time. I think DG is a lot of fun and there is a lot of funny saying on the wall like: Here are your dinner choices: 1) Take it 2) Leave it. There was a lot of thought put into the place and I felt the concept with the execution was well done. This place pretty much stand for low maintenance, friendly, affordable and good food/fun food. It's only a burger joynt, but it's true to itself. I'll definitely go back the next time.

My stop at Durty Gurt's for lunch was a bit unexpected. I had left my debit card at another restaurant the night before and had to swing by downtown Galena on my way home. I had a burger at Benjamin's the day before but felt like my arteries wanted more so why not have lunch at the place with the toilets next to the front door? Durty G's (new nickname maybe?) had a fun atmosphere, lots of stuff to read on the walls, you know, the usual funny signs and whatnot. Deciding to try something new, I went with the City Diner, which brought me bacon, cheddar cheese and a fried egg on a burger. I thought the buger was good, a bit greasy but if I was expecting something healthy I wouldn't have ordered a burger in the first place. I liked the fried egg, except everything kept sliding out the back of the burger and the the bun fell apart by the time I reached my last few bites. The fries were okay, and the server (I forget her name) was very polite and our food came out reasonably fast. I liked Durty Gurt's, but nothing stood out for me. The food was good, but average. The whole experience was good, but average. I didn't leave feeling like I NEED to come back. If you're looking for a good place in Galena to get a burger, I do suggest including Durty Gurt's as one of your choices.

We stopped into Durty Gurts for a refuel after shopping half of Main st. We all got sandwiches, one burger, one monte cristo, one pulled pork, one patty melt. We all tried a bit of each others. It was all very good. We especially liked the inclusion of syrup with the monte cristo. The service was very friendly and the kitsch level was just about where it should be. Update: Monte Cristo has been demoted from regular menu item to special... and it isn't really that good anymore. And, as you might expect from their clever signage, they don't give refunds to unsatisfied customers.

A very fun and tasty place for a burger. Good service with a smile and sense of humor. In the business district, it is worth finding parking for. I got their tombstone and while it feel apart in my hands it tasted good enough that I didn't mind one bit. Not somewhere to take a first date but you're probably aware of that if you're a local.

I love this place. Fun and friendly decor and real nice service. Only minor flaw is no beer on tap just bottles. But that is ok. The burger is outstanding!!! My burger had two 1/4lb patties, cheddar, grilled onions and topped with potato chips all housed in a wonderful pototo bun.

This is cool, quirky, family-friendly place. If you appreciate the corniness in life, this is your spot. I had a southwestern style melt with cheddar, pepper jack, grilled onions and jalapenos, while my wife had the Blue Moon burger. The melt was good, but the Blue Moon burger was awesome! For all you bleu cheese fans, this is a must-try when you visit. The fresh-cut fries were decent, but the sweet potato fries my wife order were perfectly cooked and melted in your mouth. Yum. Our server was very friendly, welcoming and subtly comedic. It's a great place to take your family or your significant other on a laid-back date. Enjoy!

Bite scale. B. Buns were very good. Uses kaiser type rolls. I. Ingredients were fresh creative combinations of burger topping. Had the city diner burger w poached egg. She had the Hawaii 5-0. excellent . Fresh cut fries were perfect. T. Taste was well above average. E. Experience was a little artificial and touristy. Atmosphere was lacking a bit. Noisy kids. Feels like a family place and not so much an adult bar and grill as the name might suggest. Service was also lacking but we'll overlook that this time.

This was our first stop on our day trip to Galena, we were hungry and this seemed to be a good of a place as any. They specialized in burgers but also had other sandwiches including really cheap full slap of rips for 12.99. I ended up getting the Inferno burger and it was delicious. Along with it I got the seasoned fries which were also really tasty. The burger was piled high and the spicy seasoning wasn't to spicy but enough to have a kick. The restaurant itself had that kitschy look like the rest of the place in Galena did so it fit right in. The staff was friendly and we received are food very fast. You cant miss this place as it has toilets at the front of store in the waiting area.

Awesome burgers! Nicely priced being in Galena. In the middle of downtown so you don't have to go out of your way. We got a burger, cheese burger with regular and seasoned fries with 2 sodas for $23. The staff were all helpful, since we were clearly tourists with our map. And I love the decor.

I am unsure what the Gurt's means in the name given the playful spelling of "Dirty" (I will speculate this is someone's name). Otherwise I will not bother any longer with trying to piece what they mean. It was my first visit to Galena and when (not if) I return I will add this on the list of places to re-visit. Durty Gurt's not only makes my spell checker go mad but they are extremely welcoming when you arrive. The staff are keen to remind you about their boozey shakes -I didn't try them- and inexpensive Bloody Mary's. The place is adorned with yobby quotes which probably seemed clever when they were focus grouping them but either I am not the targeted demographic but they only managed to get a nod from us. The food is simple if unadventurous (sometimes that's a good thing people!) and my only complaint would be the terrible selection of beers. Seriously, in IL adding Goose Island's beers to your list is a no-brainer and at least then you will go from having crap selection to a decent selection as far as I am concerned. I liked the staff enough that they still get my four stars.
