How can all you yelpers be SO wrong... Average, at best. I judge a place by the spicy tuna and this was tasteless paste. Yuck! No taste, waste of time and money.

The space is a little small so don't plan on taking a large crowd. However, their menus have a fascinating design, and their host is more than willing to elaborate on any of the descriptions. When my fiance and I saw the chef cooking a tuna dish that we had discussed trying, they brought over little pieces for us to try. Everything we order was delicious! Look at my pictures to witness colorful array, the texture, and the flavors of their plates. I would recommend eating in, and asking lots of questions.

I routinely order their party trays when last minute guests show up - and they deliver! Sushi and rolls are top notch. Owner and staff are super friendly. Highly recommend.

the quality, quantity and flavor is Superb, my husband and I come here as often as we can he order's the sushi, I order other cooked items. We are always pleased with all of the above. We only wish it were bigger, super tiny but we would rather have the quality than going too big. always friendly, owner operated, we like that too.

Never had a complaint coming in here... My wife & I eat sushi about once a month. We've been here a couple times. This place is great!.. Service, food, innovation, cucumber water, ... Try the rolls, wrapped in cucumber. Super refreshing twist that I had never tried. No worries, you don't HAVE to like cucumbers to eat here. It was just something that struck me.

Outstanding! Server was very polite and food was fresh and very tasty. Did I mention that the prices are very reasonable? Complimentary edamame? Yes please! Overall great experience and inexpensive. Definitely will be back.

Was in the area and yelped Sushi and found this place! What a great find! The actual restaurant is nothing fancy, but the sushi is amazing. We got the California, Spicy Shrimp, and Godzilla Roll. All were delicious. The service was also great. Every table (maybe 6-8) of them were occupied but the service was still great. I will def be going back when I am in the area!

This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. The staff here is so kind and do everything they can to make sure you're happy and satisfied with your meal. I'm vegan and they're always more than happy to make a variety of delicious veggie-based sushi rolls for me. I've gotten food here at least 20 times by now and I don't have one complaint. They even added a special 20% discount on Sundays since the lunch special is only Monday-Saturday. The one little warning that I will give is that if you eat in, be prepared for a small dining room. Personally, I love it and I think it's adorable.

This is a great lunch spot for sushi. Great lunch specials, great rolls, down to earth and friendly staff, and you can tell they care about their customers having a great experience. Tiny place inside, though. Don't go with a party of more than 4, but it's ideal for couples. There's some seats at the sushi bar as well. Overall a great find, I'm glad we tried it when we did, and it's now a regular spot on our lunch rotation.

Had a couple of rolls, spicy tuna crunch. Good size roll for 5.75. Also the spicy girl, wrapped in pink soy wrapper. Excellent roll. VERY small place, might seat 18 with all chairs and bar filled. Great service. You can order on line. It looks like they do a good bit of carry out. Next time I'm in that hood and crave sushi , I'll be there.

My husband and I ate at Chiba last night, and the food is fabulous. I ordered sushi which was very fresh and my husband had the steak hibachi. Although the restaurant is small, the portion size for the food is large not to mention tasty. We will definitely come back again.

Great little place. Me and my girlfriend order from it once in a while and I've never been disappointed. Good deals on sushi and cucumber salad is very refreshing. Can come out a little bit pricy but you compensate for the dollar with the quality if the sushi, which had never been stale on not fresh.

This is my go-to when I want sushi without having to drive to the city! The food is always delicious and well-priced. I highly recommend eating in for a casual lunch or dinner, because although the place is somewhat small, it has a great atmosphere and the service is always phenomenal, and the waitstaff is really friendly. The last time I was there, I was with three friends. We missed the lunch specials by about twenty minutes, and were pretty bummed, but the waitress quickly won us over by throwing in a free bowl of green tea or red bean ice cream (both of which are yummy, by the way) for each of us! And if that wasn't enough, she gave us a bowl of gummy bears to share, because she said that they taste great mixed with the ice cream, and she was right! It's the balance of hospitality and quality of Chiba that keeps me coming back!

Amazing! Great sushi and excellent hibachi at a reasonable price! Especially for lunch, and the portions are so huge that I always take left overs home and can have a second meal. The hibachi noodles are to die for! The owner and staff are so friendly! I try to order from them at least once a week. Great food every time! A must for anyone in the SW burbs.

  • Samantha G.

DELICIOUS sushi! Their motto is "we'll customize your order," so I walk in there not knowing what I want to order and I let the waitress & the chefs decide what they want to serve me. I have never regretted that decision as everything they have served me was not only visually appealing but was an explosion in my mouth of flavors and textures. This is my GO-TO sushi place from now on.. I find myself craving Chiba's sushi multiple days out of the week. LOVE IT!!

Best sushi around and I'm from the northwest in Portland, Oregon. I stopped eating sushi around Chicago because some of the really expensive sushi places were disgusting. I mean really fishy fish and then you have these people that act super fancy because they are eating sushi but really are just eating super fishy fish gross. This place is nothing like it, it reminds me of a hole in the wall in Portland, delicious, fun sushi, and the owner is the friendliest man around. He treats your kids like they are his own. Get the sweetie roll, it was soooo amazing. Hibachi style food delicious too. They even deliver! This restaurant is one of the reasons I miss Chicago burbs.

New little place in Darien I was pleased to find. Staff is outstandingly friendly. Prices are good. I had one of their special rolls, but for the life of me can't remember. It was yellow fin tuna, with some roe on top. The roe had a delicious crunch to it. Their was a mayonnaisey sauce on and around the roll, which was too much and too mayonnaisey. Next time I would order without. However, the tuna was extremely fresh and tasty. Green tea was made with a tea bag in my cup, which was very strange. I hope they change this as their business grows because it definitely took away from the experience for me.

By far the best sushi/hibachi I have ever had. The fish was fresh and rolls were larger then expected. Their lunch special is great for the price. Definitely recommend Chiba Japan!!!!!

The veggies were amazing! Holy hibachi! Great portions and the steak was made very well.

Very very delicious. Pleasant service. Great place to have nice Japanese food. I usually have my working lunch here and I love this place. I will bring my husband here for dinner.

Really impressed. Saw the menu online and was a little nervous about how low the prices were, either gonna be a get home fast after I eat, or a little hidden treasure. Well hidden treasure it was! My girlfriend and I ate there on New Year's Eve for the first time and the wait staff was excellent. When we sat down they brought us some edamame which was free. Then split a side order of fried rice for $3 which was delicious and perfectly sized for a little appetizer. Then had 3 rolls a yellowtail and scallion, dragon, and calla Lilly. We had $5 off $25 coupon and our bill ended up at $27.50! And we were stuffed. So we tipped generously and will definitely be back. There aren't a ton of sushi options in this area and this one in my opinion beats them all. Well done Chiba we'll see you again soon.

  • Daniel D.

Of all the Japanese restaurants in the area, and there are some pretty good ones, this is by far and away our favourite. Outstanding service, great food, everything that matters most. Most importantly, the fish is always fresh. The hibachi dinners are particularly generous and good value if you're hungry. The restaurant is small so make sure to call ahead if you have a group.

The decor is nice, it's super tight in space but the service was attentive. I was not impressed by the sushi as it didn't seem authentic, now this is a bit hard to explain but the whole pieces of lettuce in my roll was not very appetizing to the eye or palatte.

I bought a deal here and arranged to meet a relative that I hadn't seen in a long time for lunch. This isn't close to where I live, so imagine my surprise and dismay when we found that the trek was for nothing. The place is so small that all of the tables were filled. They looked at us when we came in and said, "sorry, full house here". End of story. Since the area isn't exactly 'restaurant alley' there was a bit of awkwardness as we tried to decide what to do. Not a great experience.

  • Giovanni L.

Very good Shrimp Tempura at a great price! Love the fact that they include eel sauce with every order... The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I have had a lot of sushi in my life and am very critical about the texture.

  • Douglas L.

I was recommended one of their special rolls w 3 kinds of fish. It was dry and bland. I had to smother it with soy sauce and wasabi to give it any taste. Miso soup tasted off as well. Probably won't come back. Sorry.

Wooooow wooooow wooooow!!! The sushi here...is outstanding! I order here at least once a week, sometimes more. I sometimes just have this extreme craving for their sushi...I really don't know what's wrong with me. Wouldn't be able to live without this place. The owner definitely has a passion for making sushi...you can taste it! You are definitely missing out if you haven't given this place a try. The price you pay is soooo worth it!

Went here last night for some good local sushi and came out with so much more! One word that describes this place: unpretentious. It's all the way in the back of a strip mall, very obscure, complete hole in the wall type place. There's seating for only a handful of customers, but we came in on a Friday night and there was only 1 other diner at 8pm. I will preface by saying I am used to having sushi from places like Coast and Sushi Wabe, but I just moved from downtown to this area, so was looking for something close to home. If you want personal customer service, this is the place for you. George, the owner, was the most personable restaurant owner we have ever met. We had 2 small children with us and one was playing with his cars on the sushi bar, and when I reprimanded him, Geroge goes, please, don't worry, when you come here, its like your own home, he can do what he wants. George had me sold right there, I didn't even need the sushi! I realized too late that this was BYOB, but George pointed us to the liquor store right across the street where we got a bottle of wine to enjoy with our meal - no corkage fee. We ordered all the special rolls, Sweetie, Sunny, Godzilla, Dragon, all really fresh and delish! It seemed to be more purist sushi, so if you are used to some upscale places with all the cream cheese and other flavors masking the sushi, this may not be what you are used to, but in comparison to places like Coast, I would say on a scale of 1-10, this comes to about a 8 in terms of freshness, presentation, and quality where Coast would be a 10. George joined in our conversation even, and now I know some people wouldn't like that but it worked for us, and I appreciate this type of dining experience. Will definitely be back here again, thanks George!

I was in the neighborhood and decided to try it per the review here. Great lunch specials! The sushi was very good...tried some maki rolls and sashimi...nice portions. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The place is small but cozy. I would definitely come back here.

Tiny Downscale place with Delicious Sushi and a very Friendly Staff. If you are looking for a fancy sushi restaurant to impress a date, turn away. The sparsly decorated stripmall store front is very small, hosting only about three tables and five seats at the sushi bar. However, even though the environment may seem overly casual, the sushi is very good, and the staff is extremely nice and very talkative (at the right times. Something hard for servers to master.) This is also a BYOB place which helps it out as well. The Maki sushi was very well made and did not fall apart at first touch. The flavors were good, the 'Crazy Maki' had a good variety of raw items and a sweet flavor complimented by a variety of sauces. The Spicy Crunchy Shrimp Maki was also very good. The Nigiri cut was not ideal but the piece was substantial and had a great flavor. My Dinner (Shared and Sampled): Ednamame Hamachi Nigiri California Roll Spicy Crunchy Shrimp Maki Yellowtail and Scallion Maki Crazy Maki (A must have)

Chiba is a small strip mall Japanese restaurant that has amazing lunch specials at an almost unbelievable price. I ordered a teriyaki chicken special and had a large plate full of veggies, noodles, chicken and rice. In addition, the water is spiked with cucumber, which somehow makes it taste so much better. The service is impeccable. This place is definitely worth a visit.

BYOB in the burbs? Yes, please! Great little spot near Plainfield/75th. About 10-15 seats so be prepared for a teeny place. Sushi is reasonably priced and was really good. Also, tried pork gyoza rolls which were pretty good as well. I absolutely loved the chicken fried rice- it was super flavorful and probably some of the best I've had in the area. Lame to say, but true. Service was quick and attentive. Super friendly. Grab some wine and beer and head over here! Or.... They deliver too.

I love this place. I've been a couple of times in the past few weeks and it just gets better and better. This week we went and enjoyed the mixed tempura, which was fantastic. Then my husband and I shared a Sunny roll, so yummy sweet and fresh with the crunchy top. The Godzilla roll that my husband couldn't get enough of. Seriously, he said if he wasn't stuffed he would order another one right then. We also had the dragon roll that was so my favorite. I'm already ready to go back again. Great service. It's a teeny tiny place but the service and food are top notch.

Vietnamese owned Japanese sushi restaurant. A family owned business which I respect and also respect the creativity of their rolls. However, being a sushi snob and it doesn't help coming from the West Coast, the fish isn't the freshest nor was I particularly happy with the sushi bar set up. The staff was very nice and the server was TOO nice... for me a little over bearing. Anyway, the restaurant itself is Tiny and when I mean Tiny, I mean must seat less than 20 people. Clean, attentive, creative. I do hope they do well as I always wish all small family owned businesses to do well, but I don't know if I want to come back again... it's a toss up for me. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. If you are looking for authentic or great sushi, this is Not the place for you, but if you want some fun rolls and a decent price point, this place will do it just fine.

  • Arik H.

Great little place. It has become our go to sashimi spot. A little small to eat in, but the staff is awesome. We don't order delivery or carry out sushi from anywhere else anymore - very reasonable prices!

This might end up being my regular sushi spot. I was really hungry, and decided to go in for their lunch special. They give good portions on the sushi rolls, so I was full when I left. I did the 3-rolls special for $8.95 which includes miso soup & cucumber salad. I ordered 3 spicy crunchy salmon rolls. The quality of the rice, seaweed, & salmon was excellent. The miso soup & cucumber salad was great as well. It's a small place, but big enough to dine-in. The staff is friendly, and since it's small, I can see the chef, waiter, & other workers at all times, so if I need something, it's all within reach. Nice atmosphere, big flat screen tv to watch, and clean. I highly recommend this place.

Great food and very friendly staff. My friend got lost and one of the chefs got on the phone and helped her find her way. I ordered the sushi lunch special and it was delicious. It was around $8 for 7 pieces of chef's choice sushi. The hostess even comes over to explain what all the fish are! Which, by now, I have a good idea of most of the fish, but sometimes I am unsure, so I loved having it all explained to me. There are pictures on the wall of all the different types of sushi, so you can study up for your next visit. My friend got the Philadelphia roll and a single scallop. Also delicious. The place is BYOB. There's a convenience store across from the restaurant with beer and lotto tickets. We scratched a ticket at the table and won $17! Enough to pay the bill. The hostess at the restaurant scratched a lotto ticket at the same table a few weeks ago and won $100! So if you buy a lotto ticket, be sure to ask for the lucky table. Good food, good price, good people and great experience all around.

Cute little place tho dirty tables and floor. Friendly attentive and quick service. Huge pile of flavorless tempura and a dipping sauce that was more sour than typical sweeter sauce. Ill-formed rolls that fell apart. Snow crab in the roll was chopped and mixed with some mayonnaise that masked any flavor. Hama roll was so-so. Large helping of low grade ginger. Bar seats are so low that the bar is at your neck if you're under 5'10. And kitchen TV was blaring over the music. Saw sushi chef at his station on his iphone. Anything more germ ridden than ones phone? Ick! Avoid.

I love this little place. The owner are very friendly. The fish are super fresh. I accidentally ordered a large plate of sashimi one night. This is the first time I eat so much raw fish meat. I thought I would have belly pain, but I was perfectly fine that night. The lunch special are my favorite. I really can't imagine people only spend $11 for a full stomach of delicious sushi rolls before I come to this shop. Love you guys!

  • Jackie L.

If you like fried sushi, this your place. I prefer raw sushi dishes, which based on the location in Chicago, you aren't going to get the freshest fish as you would in California so my opinion is biased. I didn't like that they don't offer the lunch special on Sunday.

  • Dustin H.

This little space is great! I stopped in there today to grab some sushi for lunch and honestly didn't know what to expect. But wow... great people behind the counter and frankly some good sushi... and at a great price. It's great sushi for the area and price. Pros - great service... very kind and generous - generous on the fish... they definitely don't skimp - good value - small and intimate Cons - small... I'd suggest no more than 6 people in a group

Absolutely phenomenal time at Chiba. My wife and I were celebrating our seventh anniversary, and sushi always seems to be our big event meal. I was looking for something in the burbs as I didn't want to traverse the city only to be stuck down there, and I know you can find those killer sushi places in little strip malls in random little towns. This place had the best reviews of any place I scoped out, so I went with it. BYOB, so we packed up a nice bottle that our neighbor gave us for making her family meal, and made the short drive to Darien. Upon pulling into the parking lot I immediately became sketched out. The place just didn't feel right. Didn't have that immediate charm I was expecting, and I worried for a second that I'd been led astray into the world of over-sauced, frozen-fished, meh sushi. This feeling wouldn't last long, I promise. Once we sat down and started talking with Jim, we were transformed to a world that exists in a realm with the rest of the amazing restaurants in the world. Jim is knowledgable, amicable, funny, interesting, willing to give his opinion, and extremely helpful when one is attempting to peruse their highly intriguing menu to make something of a rational decision. He told us we had to have the Mexican, the Bage, and the Black Angel, the rest was up to us. In all we ordered five rolls and a bit of sashimi. While I wouldn't order the sashimi here again, the rolls were simply divine. The dragon, black angel, shrimp tempura and spider were some of the best of those I've ever had. The dragon in particular matched the smokiness of the eel with a perfect avocado, and enough unagi sauce to melt in your mouth without being overly mushy. The highlights wer the bage roll and the Mexican roll. Smoked salmon, cream cheese, deep fried. Like the greatest appetizer you could ever imagine. Not greasy in the slightest, crunchy, still soft, a wonderful mixture of textures. The Mexican was incredibly fresh tuna with avocado, jalapeno, a bit of tempura, cilantro and ponzu sauce. Just brilliant. Perfect way to kick off our meal. By the end we were stuffed, happy, gave Jim the rest of our unfinished bottle of wine, and were ready to head home for scotch and Top Chef. Escaped with $80 for a massive meal of sushi. Can't beat that. Places like Chiba deserve your business. They don't fret about creating the "perfect atmosphere" through decor or location. They just do it by crafting some of the best sushi I've had in the states, all through intelligent, friendly customer service, and a desire to make people happy with good food. Why can't every restaurant be like this?

This tiny little sushi place really surprised me. I must have passed it 100 times not even thinking to stop and try it. However, I kept seeing it pop up on Yelp, so I had to make the trip. I was a little put off when I entered and saw about 4 tables and a bar to sit at. I frequently dine alone and I like to find myself a table in the back to enjoy my meal in. Here, I had to sit front and center at the bar because there really aren't a whole lot of options. The only guy that was working behind the counter didn't really acknowledge me for the first few minutes that I arrived because he was trying to take phone orders, make other patron's sushi and tell me where to sit all at the same time. I ordered a specialty roll and a few pieces of sushi to get a taste for Chiba. The fish that I was served was really fresh and everything was delicious. I didn't notice the great priced sushi that everyone else mentioned, but I didn't go at lunch so I think I will try that next time. This place doesn't have much ambiance but when you have really good food, sometimes you can get away with that. I will come back for sure to try some more things and take advantage of their lunch specials.

Awesome sushi! Terrific service! Friendliest staff! No alcohol but you can BYOB and there is a liquor store across the parking lot.

This is definitely my favorite sushi place in the suburbs. I have ordered from here countless times and the quality is always amazing. My favorites are the rainbow roll (so fresh) and their Black Angel roll (it has a very unique flavor). The place is small, just a few tables, I always just do take-out. The people that work there are always really nice and helpful. Whenever I decide to try somewhere else for sushi I am always disappointed I didn't just go here.

I've been to Chiba a few times. The food is really good but not anything to go crazy for. The special rolls are probably the best. I really enjoyed the Mexican Roll. One complaint is the excessive use of mayo sauces in all the rolls. The quantity overwhelms the roll sometimes. Also, the wasabi is very weak. I have to use everything they give plus ask for more to get the kick at the right level. Chiba is a solid place to get your sushi on. I wouldn't travel far to try it though. If you live in the area - go for it.

    (3)
  • Sabrina J.

Okay, I must say that the 5 stars isn't necessarily because the sushi blew me away, but this restaurant is BYOB, which is extremely hard to come by in the suburbs. When my husband and I feel like having wine with our sushi, this is definitely the first place we go to - it's a real money saver and the sushi is pretty decent, too. If you live in the western suburbs and are looking for a BYOB restaurant, I definitely recommend this one. It's a very small/intimate restaurant, though. We've never had problems getting a table, but we also don't go out to dinner on the weekends (due to conflicting work schedules), so I'm not sure how long the wait for a weekend table can be.

  • Quicumque S.

I love this place, I order about once a week at work. Reasonably priced, very tasty AND they are so friendly. The type of place where they remember your name, ha!

Really great place and the staff are super nice. I'm come in at least once a week for the sushi lunch specials. If you are feeling gluttonous, try the Hibachi meals. You will get a plate piled high with delicious meat, noodles and veggies, along with some really interesting dipping sauces on the side.

  • Tom B.

Selfishly, I'd like to rate this 1 star or not review it at all, just so it would be easier to get a weekend night seat at this tiny place. However I owe it to fellow foodies and the owners to tell the truth. This place is crazy good. My family of four shared 10 rolls, most of them specials. The rolls used a variety of fresh and cooked fish and shell fish. The fish was so fresh it was noticeable. So many place serve rolls with more suspect fish to cover up the taste with sauces. These rolls were subtly sauced and the fish really was allowed to shine. Sorry I can't remember the names, but they were specials, and I went into a sushi coma 3/4s of the way through dinner. I did try some sashimi, and the maguro and hamachi we're just perfect. Great texture and very clean tasting. Go early or you will wait! Once you eat here, you won't mind the wait though.

Best Sushi by far in this area! The fish is always fresh and the cuts are generous. Great service, they served me cucumber water when I was waiting for my order. The restaurant is small but stylish and BYOB. Great service and great sushi!!!

It recently opened about 2weeks ago. It was my first time here and it was such a great experience -- will definitely come back! Great Food! Everything we ordered were awesome! Also, every dish came with a unique and different creative style! None like other! People were awesome! Great Atmosphere! As soon as you walked in, you are greeted with a polite bow -- even when you left! Great Manners! They also serve you with tea and will always refill your drinks! Check it out! P.s. Not everything is on the menu -- so, just ask if you have any special requests. The chef will accommodate your requests. If you say no mayo, there will be no mayo! They have Mochi, too! :)

  • TORI RIOT T.

Just ordered carry-out from here based on the reviews, and yes..I have to jump on the bandwagon. As a frequenter of the 20$ all-you-can-eat at Sushi City, I wanted to try something new in the area for Japanese rolled goodies (and I also wasn't hungry enough to cram 7 different rolls plus appetizers). I called in and ordered a vegetable tempura, vegetable roll, spicy crunchy tuna roll, and the Sam Rittenburg roll. The guy on the phone was very friendly, repeated my order back to me, gave me my total and then said it'd be ready in 10-15 minutes. All those items were just a few pennies short of 30$ with tax. I drive over after about 5 minutes (live 10 min away), and as every review before me as said, very, very small. The seating area is about if not just a little bigger than my bedroom in my apartment, but is very well kept and intimate. The man inside tells me they're finishing up my last order, and asks me if one soy sauce is okay. I thought he meant packets, so I asked for 2 more. Then I found out it's actual cups of soy sauce to go, which is very nice (but now I have more soy sauce then I know what to do with!). The man also explains the different sauces in the bag for me, which I really appreciated because I've had times where I've ordered from foreign restaurants and all the sauces are not labeled and only through trial and error do you find out what goes on what. He was also very courteous and conversational. Drive home and open my bag of yumyums - there was a LOT. There was at least 8-10 pieces of vegetable tempura including onion, broccoli, and sweet potato. There were 8 pieces of spicy crunchy tuna and 6 of the vegetable. The Sam Rittenburg got it's own container with 10 pieces, and the portioning was generous. Definitely got my 30$ worth. The spicy tuna had amazing flavor, different than Sushi City's (not to mention that several times at Sushi City the spicy tuna was way less than fresh - this place, top notch). The vegetable roll came with avocado, some type of squash I believe, lettuce, and other veggies. Amazingly good; and I'm usually not a fan of avocado. The Sam Rittenburg roll came with the eel BBQ sauce on the side, I tried the sauce on it's own and didn't really taste like much, but when I put it on the deep fried goodness the mellow salty, deep undertones matched perfectly with the tempura shrimp and spicy tuna. The only minor complaint I would have is that the tempura was just a bit on the oily side; yes, I know it's deep fried, but possibly if they put napkins or a paper on the bottom of the to go container the veggies wouldn't reabsorb the oil. Will most definitely go back with a friend or two and suggest it to even more, great service and great food - why not? And I also have a bunch of leftovers in the fridge for later tonight!

Great little place for sushi with attentive service. There are literally 7 tables in this place so you can't have more than 15-20 eating at one time. The cucumber water is a very nice touch and the sushi is very solid.

Awesome service. The food was also good. I didn't like the quality of a couple things I ordered, the owner was super attentive and changed it up without question, even recommended something pretty tasty to me. Overall its a really nice place to have dinner in the suburbs. Will be back.

Great sushi! The only reason I can't give this place 5 stars is because it is way too small- very cramped seating area and they don't serve udon noodle soup which I love on cold days. Their sushi is very generous in size and quantity and flavorful plus they have real snow crabmeat in their california rolls if you ask for it. Their tempura appetizer is also very generous in size- there were at least 6 shirmps in there ! Lastly, they have very friendly and attentive service.

Great food, super friendly atmosphere. Equivalent of a mom and pop diner, with sushi. The waitress is exceptionally friendly and the whole atmosphere is easy going.

This place is the best... Finally a,sushi joint in Darien!!! It is a bit small but the service is awesome and the food is fresh. Everyone who works there makes you feel welcome and like they have known you forever. Not to mention the menu and how affordable it is. If you are looking to support a local family owned business, this is the one to choose... I will keep coming back as long as they let me.. well worth 5 stars.

A decent but slightly overpriced place. I went for lunch on a Wednesday. The waitress was friendly and I tried the salmon lunch special. The soup and salad were standard and good; I can't complain. The main course itself was also upto the mark. The salmon was well cooked; it was just the right balance between soft and hard where it held together but was easy to cut and melted in your mouth. The sauce was a good match for it; it complemented the flavor of the fish without overriding it. However overall the meal had a somewhat greasy chinese-takeout feel, and so to pay more than $10 means this place gets a rating of 4.

Best sushi outside of Chicago. The staff is wonderful, service is great, and sushi is excellent. Their standards far surpass other sushi joints in the area - the fish is always very fresh (not always so in other establishments). My husband and I have tried every roll on the menu, and there isn't one I wouldn't recommend. As other reviewers have mentioned, the space is very small, but it's clean, bright and cheerful. I have seen larger parties (~10) accommodated - calling ahead for a larger group is recommended. This little place is definitely worth coming back to (as we do most Friday nights).

Great find! Ask for special rolls not on the menu - YUM! Our family of four has been there three times. Some get sushi and some get hibachi. Both are very good! The hibachi was so big 2-3 could have eaten it. Service was excellent! Don't let the smallish interior drive you away. Give it a try, you won't be sorry!

I am updating my review as my original review was for my first time here. I get takeout sushi rolls from Chiba around once a week. I like this restaurant very much, it's my go to place when I don't want to order something as unhealthy as a burger and fries on the days I don't want to cook. The staff here is so friendly and they now address me by name and a friendly hello as soon as I walk in. The restaurant is super tiny inside, but I think that is one of the interesting things about this place. I've never sat down to eat though, I always do takeout. They deliver too, which is great this winter if you're too lazy to get out of your pj's. My personal favorites are the Godzilla roll, spicy crunchy tuna or shrimp, snow crab California, calamari tempura, and tuna and avocado. Chiba also has awesome lunch specials Monday thru Saturday, great price for a lot of food. If you haven't gone here, check them out for sure!

We were pleasantly surprised by Chiba, because there are very few good Japanese restaurants in the area. The signature rolls we had were quite good, but the house-made sauces made this place special. The salad dressing as well as the sauce for the gyoza were both unusual and delicious. The waitress was friendly and helpful. She even brought me a special wasabi sauce with yuzu once she realized that I love spicy foods. The chicken fried rice was full of chicken, garlic and flavor. Someone at another table had ordered the hibachi beef, and the wonderful smell permeated the tiny dining room.

My friend swears this place has the best sushi, ever. She brings it up all the time, so I finally made a point of checking it out. It is okay. The place itself is tiny - maybe seating for 12, but that would be very tight. It is BYOB. I would say this is mainly takeout, I can't see myself eating in. Easy parking, located in a strip mall. I walked in around 5:30 on a Saturday to place my order to-go. All the workers jumped up when the door opened, as they were just standing around talking, there was nobody else in the joint. Super friendly people. I felt very welcomed as I looked over the menu. They offered to give me water as I waited. I placed an order for 3 rolls, and they told me that I can use the coupon on the menu to get a free california roll, awesome! It took about 10 minutes to make my order, and then I left. The 3 rolls were about $38, which I thought was decent, as I ordered their specialty rolls. I get home and the rolls were small, very very small. I am used to specialty rolls being a bit bigger, hence the $13/roll price. Everything tasted good and held up to the 20 minute ride home. If I was in the area and wanted sushi, I'd probably stop again. However, I wouldn't make a special trip. Average sushi.

Very friendly service. Very small place but we went late on a Saturday night and were able to get a table for 3. We took the advice of yelpers and fellow diners and hit the convenience store across the street for some wine. We ordered: Sam Rittenberg Roll Black Angel Roll Spicy Grill Roll Dragon Maki Spicy Crunchy Tuna Maki We disagreed on our one favorite. I'd have to say my favorite was the Dragon maki. This place was not expensive at all as other yelpers have agreed. All in, the bill was $55. Not bad. We will definitely be coming back. Very nice and friendly atmosphere and fun to be able to watch Harry Potter that night on the tv.

Chiba's sushi is some of the best in the 'burbs. If they had an AYCE option, I might have never left. It's a tiny place, with 5-6 tables and seats at the sushi bar. It's set-up mostly for carryout orders, but we received great service that was friendly and attentive. It appears to be family run, judging by the little boy who was hanging out at the back of the restaurant and kept peeking at us from behind the curtain. We ordered the Rainbow, Spicy Crunchy Tuna, and Mexican rolls. It is impossible to pick a favorite of the three. This is fresh, delicious, well-made sushi. Any time we have sushi, there's always one or two rolls that I'm not as impressed with and leave the last few pieces for my husband to finish. Not this time. The Mexican roll is slightly spicy, but nothing I couldn't handle. It is topped with a slice of jalapeno, which you can pick off with a chopstick if you want something more mild. I'm lucky to have this close to home, but I would not mind driving a few extra miles or minutes to get back to Chiba.

I really loved this place. Yes, it is a tiny restaurant. It is clean and cozy. They have the tasty and fresh suchis with reasonable price tag. Warm and attentive services. What else you expect more? When we went for a lunch and the lunch menu was awesome. You could pick form Sashimi or Maki. Both were great and decent size for the price. We lliked all Spicy Tuna, Unagi and Salmon rolls. Actually we liked everything including the cucumber salad. Staff was wonderful and very friendly. I definitely will go back again. If it is full with a long wait, you could try the Thai place in the same plaza.

It's a small shop in a strip mall but the food was good. It looked like a family run outfit and they took us being vegetarian quite seriously.

Great sushi and super friendly service at really affordable prices! I stopped here after "hiking" at Waterfall Glen nearby and it was a perfect way to end the day. With the lunch special I got three rolls and a cucumber salad (soup is included as well, but I was unable to eat it) for $9! Sushi that cheap usually isn't very good, but the sushi here is delicious.

The best sushi, hands down. It's a small place, not a romantic, sit down kind of place but for take out or delivery, oh My God! - awesome sushi. All my friends, even relatives from overseas that never had sushi, LOVE it!. thank you so much for providing delicious and fast service. Vegetarian options are delicious, too.

I've been to Chiba twice now and it was even better the second time! The first time my husband and I dined in, and it was very cramped and uncomfortable since it's such a tiny little restaurant. The second time I chose to do take out and that's what I'll be doing from now on! The sushi was so fresh and flavorful- some of the best I've found around here.

Amazing place. The staff are all very personable and courteous people. The service is quick, take-out is always ready quickly too. The food is out of this world. Stopped in here because we happened to be in the area. What a wonderful surprise. We Yelped to find it and they lived up to their yelp reveiws for sure. The 3 of us had the fried Shi mai, mixed vegetable tempura, a maki roll called Beauty and the B, and a grilled vegetable plate. WOW... Excellent food and the staff answered our questions and adjusted some of the food per dietary restrictions. We finished with some red bean ice cream and some green tea ice cream. Yummy! It is teeny tiny and they don't like to take reservations but you can certainly call ahead and see how busy they are. It's worth the effort.

I read all the great reviews and was excited to try this place out. We drove in the snow to come try it out. Walking in, I was surprised it was so small. Waitress was nice. We came for lunch and opted for Shrimp Hibachi Lunch Special - This came with a miso soup and salad. I really enjoyed the dressing on the salad. This was a lot of food. It had noodles, rice, veggies and shrimp. It was good. 3 Roll Lunch Special - This came with a miso soup and cucumber salad. I preferred the other salad. I chose Calamari Tempura, Unagi & Avocado and Spicy Crunchy Shrimp. Sushi was okay, but not the best. Overall, it was okay, but don't go out of your way for it.

All I can say is WOW! This place is great. The Sushi is awesome, I was even able to get my 8 year old to eat here! Small dining area, and that can be a bit of a hassle during busier times, so now I usually order takeout. Their lunch special of 3 rolls for $8.95, with a small cucumber salad and miso soup simply can not be beat! Highly recommended!

I just had Chiba cater a party for us. They did a fabulous job for us. All the food was ready, on time, and EXTREMELY reasonable in cost. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The fried rice, Goya and crispy tempura was hot, just made. Everyone at the party raved about the food. Made me look like a hero and I did nothing but place the order and pick it up. Thanks Chiba, you are awesome.

Great sushi!! Small place locate in strip near basking robins and subway. Owners are really nice! Will stop out again. Very fresh flavors. 4 star for seating. There are maybe 12 seats def dine out if you like your space.

I never knew that eating sushi rolls on a rainy day would make me super happy. Maybe it was the friendly Taiwanese owners. Or maybe it was because I got their lunch special. I got their famed cucumber salad (worth it!) and 3 vegetarian maki rolls (sweet potato, oshinko, and inari tamago). The amount of rice is perfect, and the rice texture is super soft, unlike those in other maki rolls I've tried. The sweet potato maki roll is best eaten while warm and crispy, so if you can't finish everything, eat that first! I'd definitely come back for their vegetarian hibachi next time!

Excellent fresh and tasty sushi. Miso soup actually has ingredients! Not just broth. Family owned and friendly staff. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is it is the size of a phone booth.

Today I ordered potstickers, 3 sushi rolls along with Mizo soup and salad. Worst experience of my life. The potstickers weren't drained properly. There was hardly any meat filling inside. When I bit into them, a lot of water came out from being steamed. Unappealing. The sushi rolls were decent besides the fact they were not rolled with care. Could not even pick them up to eat them without them falling apart. I also specifically ordered NO SHELLFISH due to my allergies. The third roll had snow crab in it still. They did not substitute it out. If I hadn't noticed there was crab in it, I would be on my way to the hospital right now. The salad was shaved cucumber and carrots with a light vinaigrette. It would have been decent if it wasn't drowning in the dressing. Absolutely repulsive and unappealing. To top it off, the man delivering my food did not say one word to me not look at me. Horrible experience.

OK, first, this place is tiny. I mean like a sushi bar, and then like 10 tables, cozy. But, it is clean, nice, comfortable, and the service is wonderful. They also deliver! Delivery sushi! Yes please! When we went for the first time the other night we got the boiled goyoza, which were tasty and good. Then we got two rolls. One was something sweetheart, and came in the shape of a heart with honey wasabi sauce on top. Just a dab of the sauce, not enough to hurt you, just enough to be tasty. This roll was very good, but the other was wonderful. I do not unfortunately remember the name of it, but it had spicy sauce, and was amazing. I really wish i remember more about it! Last we each had a piece of mackerel. The nighiri pieces were large, fresh, and tasty, with no dressing or fixings. You also get free edamame side with your order! Great! The owner himself was there, and ensured or meal was great and was very friendly. This place does not serve alcohol as a warning to those sake lovers out there, but the food and service make it worth it. Process are descent, and the good is good. A casual, cozy atmosphere for a nice night it for some simple, tasty sushi.

Perfect place for a cheap and great meal without the guilt of fast food. I got the chef's choice of sushi and sashimi, and the fish was so fresh and the plate so well put together that it makes up for the lack of ambiance. Closed on Mondays so don't listen to Yelp!

Fantastic establishment, sashimi was wonderfully fresh, ordered the dragon roll then continued onto the flame dragon and crazy maki. And I just LOVED the flame dragon well done, awesome service (the main guy was just a multi-tasking genius).

Place was good, very good. My favorite dish was the peppered seared tuna. It just melted in my mouth. The place is a bit small and probably not a good place to go with a big group unless you call ahead of time. There are two tables that sits four and three tables that sits two. Although the fish was super fresh, it seemed the fish was redder than normal. I was once told it is not uncommon for food coloring to be added to make the color more vibrant. I'm not certain if this is what happened here, but don't think tuna can get that red. Maybe because it was close to sweetest day? IDK All in all, loved the ambience, staff, and food. We will be back if we are in that part of town again.

Thank you, fellow Yelpers, for leading me to this gem of a sushi discovery in Darien! I am a sushi fanatic, and very particular about sushi. Of course, everyone wants their sushi to be exceptionally fresh, but I also appreciate a nice variety of signature maki rolls with different flavor profiles. Chiba delivers both of these things flawlessly! The space itself is very small, and doesn't have the best ambiance, especially for a romantic evening, but if you're in the area and want to carry out some outstanding sushi, definitely call them. The Godzilla Roll is a standout, as is the Beauty & the Beat. I tried the Sakura roll last time, and it was very fresh and delicious. I'm usually not a big California Roll person, typically opting instead for a spicy tuna roll. However, they currently offer a free Snow Crab California roll with any $30+ order, and it blew my mind how fresh this was. None of that imitation crab meat...this was real snow crab, and very tasty! On top of all this, their prices are quite reasonable. Obviously what they save on having a swanky space, they spend on quality ingredients.

when I go to sushi restaurants, I look for 2 things - high quality fish, and tasty rolls. and it's SO difficult to find a place that does both! often times, the places with tasty rolls is because the quality of the fish isn't that good, so they disguise it by either frying or baking it, then slather on eel sauce, spicy mayo, cream cheese etc. on the flipside, for some reason, the places with good fish don't really know how to make rolls. enter chiba. fresh, THICK cuts of sashimi (love salmon and yellowtail), and their rolls are delicious - make sure you ask for the house-made wasabi mayo! and for all your non-sushi friends or maybe a picky kid, their hot kitchen menu was great! my Philistine buddy doesn't eat sushi, so he got the "hibachi chicken dinner" which I scoffed at, but I shouldn't have been surprised - it was a generous portion and quite tasty! you notice I didn't mention service. welp, being from LA, I'm accustomed to crappy service, especially in ma-and-pa sushi joints. so if I get a friendly server that's a plus, but I don't expect it. but Jim and his wife are super nice very hospitable; it almost seems like you're a guest in their quaint little house! go there more than once and Jim will remember you - he's hilarious. they could be charging more for their food, especially with the quality, but they don't. their hard work is evident in every plate that hits the table, as well as the constant line of people picking up sushi to enjoy at home. this place is amazing. oh, and the BYOB is *hiccup* awesome =p

When I looked into this restaurant is came up as a 4.5 star location so had to check it out. The place only have seating for about 10 people. It's a cute little spot in the suburbs of IL, and good place to stop by for lunch. But definitely not a 4.5 star quality joint. The number of roll variations was pretty average, not extraordinary. Overall though, good experience and good service.

  • Nick G.

This place has unbelievable value compared to how good the sushi is. I have been here a lot, and for lunch, it is priced better than picking up sushi from whole foods or comparable source, and obviously tastes better. The sushi, surprisingly then, is really good. There have only been a couple of times (once with a cucumber salad that tasted weird, and an eel roll with some cartilage) that is has been anything but... and that is after well over probably 30+ visits. Seating is also sometimes a challenge, it is a small place... but they do offer online ordering with pickup.

We got take out from here last night and it was so delicious. Yes, this place is tiny and may not be ideal for an intimate date, so what, get it to go and have a picnic. The staff is super friendly and the food is tasty and not too expensive. This will definitely be my new go to spot for sushi.

Okay, this place is awesome! I love love loooove salmon sashimi and this place has 15 pieces over a huge bowel of rice for $18. It costs $12 for 7 pieces at Whole Foods! My husband had a crunchy salmon roll that was delicious too. The restaurant is small, with only a couple tables and sushi bar seating. The restaurant is very clean and the staff is friendly! I can't wait to go back!

  • Amy S.

This little restaurant is a fantastic addition to Darien. We mostly order takeout, but we have also eaten in the restaurant, and service is good in both circumstances. The food is prepared quickly without sacrificing quality or taste. Their lunch special is fantastic. You get a really filling lunch with your choice of 2 or 3 rolls and miso soup and cucumber salad. The food is always fresh and delicious and the customer service is great. The chefs and waitstaff are all very nice and attentive, though its hard not to be attentive in such a small room. Speaking of the room, if you're coming with a group of more than 4 people, call ahead or get takeout. It's a very small room and that's the only reason I'm not giving a full 5 stars. It can feel cramped but it isn't ever loud. The decor is simple but still keeping in theme with a Japanese restaurant. In spite of the tiny room, it's a good restaurant with really great food and is definitely worth a visit.

Amazing sushi that you can't beat at the price point. As many people said, the lunch specials are a real steal. They also have coupons in the mail. The place is small, but that doesn't stop them from making great sushi.

After having passed Chiba restaurant over a dozen times en route, we finally decided that we needed a sushi date night (since we haven't had sushi in over 6 weeks!) Strolled in without reservations to a very small sushi joint run by a Chinese family. Super friendly service from start to finish, and adorable children of the owners hanging out in the restaurant added to the family centric theme. The wife and I ordered up a string of nigiri pieces which were very affordable (on average $2 per nigiri), but a bit to my disappointment, the quality of the fish is just above average. The rice provided with each nigiri is just the right size (pretty small with large cut of fish draped nicely over it), but overpacked creating an almost gummy like texture instead of a soft pillow on which the fish sits on. We ordered up rolls, and this is more where they shine. The inventive flavors of the rolls and less overpressed rice around the outside are done well, and the sauces/combinations help escalate the flavors. Verdict: If you're looking for die-hard fresh fish nigiri/sashimi, this won't be it. But if you want to go to a family friendly place that serves some inventive and tasty rolls, come check out Chiba. We may come back again.

I was pleasantly surprised by my overall experience at Chiba today. Their food is very good and filling, while being reasonably priced. The salmon portions inside the sushi rolls are generously big. The eel inside the eel avocado roll was remarkably warm, tasty and fresh.

Believe the hype at this amazing BYOB diamond in the rough! I love Chiba and would eat here every day if I could. The owners are super nice and very attentive. All of their sauces and dressings are homemade and delicious. The superstars and my family's favorites of the menu are... Tuna Nigiri Smoked Salmon Nigiri Spicy Snow Crab Nigiri Unagi Nigiri Miso Soup House Salad Cucumber Salad Pepper Tuna Tataki Spicy Crunchy Tuna Maki Spicy Crunchy Salmon Maki Rainbow Maki Snow Crab California Maki Sunny Roll Sweetie Roll Black Angel Roll Godzilla Roll Salmon Hibachi Shrimp Hibachi Steak Hibachi As reviewers have stated, this place is small but it's no big deal. The service is impeccable and prepare to save money because the prices are beyond reasonable. They have lunch specials (hibachi, maki, nigiri, sashimi) Monday thru Saturday from 12-3:30 and on Sunday they offer 20% off. Niiiiiice! My new favorite sushi place and I'm sure it will become one of yours too.

I've been here probably about eight times. It's my go-to place. A few minutes from my corporate office so usually hit it up once a month. Good EVERY time. Granted...I always get the same thing: Sweetheart roll, Sunny roll, and Dragon roll, miso, edamame. Always. Always awesome. Just go.

Fresh Sushi! Great lunch and dinner specials. Love the shrimp tempura, 7 piece sushi chef special, cucumber salad, and shrimp dumpling tastes better then China Town! Love the Terraki Salmon Dinner special. Owner makes sure it's top quality seafood and is concerned with you enjoying your meal. Boutique place = better service. Look forward to going back!

My friend turned me on to this place a while back and now it is my favorite Sushi restaurant. I was very timid when it came to trying new things but on my first visit I tried unagi..and loved it. Everything they prepare is so fresh and flavorful. It's tiny but all that matters to me is the taste of the food! GREAT prices and the lunch special is amazingly cheap.

The steak hibachi lunch deal is amazing! Tiny little place packs a punch... Flavor is great and steak is very tender.. At $9.95 the lunch is our favorite thing to get!
