This place has been around for sometime now, but I never went and tried it out. So happy I did this evening. I thought it was going to be this little hole in the wall but it turned out to be a decent place. I ordered the Taco Dinner (with chicken ) and rice - no beans. Didn't have to wait long, went right in placed my order, waited about 3 or 4 minutes and my togo order was ready. They give a generous amount of meat within each of the 3 soft shell tacos. They also include 2 sauced which seemed to be a mild and hot (green & red) sauce. For $9.99 it's a perfect serving size not to big and not to little. I'll defiantly go here again!

We love taco diner. Probably get it to go at least once a week. They have the best steak taco's I have had and their chips are also really good. I can't recommend it enough.

4 stars in my old review? What the jiminy was I thinking? Taco Diner is 5 stars. It's the food, amigo. My steak taco dinner... sublime. TY attacked his fajito tacos like jackals devouring the weak gazelle of the herd. Don't let the strip mall location fool you... this is the best Mexican food I've had in the area. si... yow, bill

Holy guacamole! You might want to make the assumption that Taco Diner is just another Mexican joint in just another suburban strip mall. Bzzt! Wrong! This place was packed with customers on a Friday evening. Some stayed to dine in, others were taking it to go. I ordered horchata to drink. It was pretty good. The free refills are even better! Get the guacamole! It's made fresh and although "chunky" isn't the most appealing word, that's exactly what it is. The guacamole isn't that paste-like junk you get at the grocery store. Taco Diner's guacamole has big, fresh chunks of avocado, tomato, and onion. And yes, a little bit of cilantro, but it's not overpowering at all. The chips and salsa are good too. The Chiles Rellenos are really good. They are perfectly battered and fried, and then stuffed with good Monterey Jack cheese. Taco Diner also does chile relleno tacos if that's your bag. Entrees are served with beans (refried only, no black beans) and rice. I opted for double rice (eeek! no me gusta refried beans). Our meal was ridiculously inexpensive for all of the food we ordered. Taco Diner may rival my other local favorite, Burrito Parilla, for when I'm craving something a bit more authentic.

This place is shockingly good. I got the carne asada and it was the finest piece of skirt steak I've ever had anywhere. I hope the new location coming to Romeoville can match the quality.

Taco Talk. I ate some, then I ate some more. In the big scheme of things I think 4 stars is a little generous when you compare them to similar places like the Taco Grill in Downers (which I also rank 4 stars) but it's definitely better than a three star place. We need more stars.. or half stars. It's in the mall on the northeast corner of Boughton & Weber, sandwiched between Panera and Jewel. Super clean and very friendly. They give you chips and salsa, we also ordered Guacamole... their Guac is really tasty, they make it in a very chunky style, so if you are used to smooth, you should align your expectations with the reality of the chunk. We ordered all of our taco's mexican style with cilantro and onions. I got a meal with three different tacos: Chicken, Steak and Al Pastor plus rice and beans. I thought the chicken was boring, kind of bland. The Al Pastor was very good and so was the steak (the Steak had a really good char flavor, yum!) The rice and beans were just fine, nothing special, but tasty and I was a member of the clean plate club (once again!) Lisa ordered a chicken taco and wanted one fish taco.. they wouldn't sell her just one (it's two for $5.. kind of hard to argue with that) so I was forced to volunteer my stomach services to relieve her of the burden of that second fish taco. They do their fish tacos a little differently, it was a fairly large piece of Tilapia with just a little garnish.. kind of dry but with a really good seasoning a.. at 2 for $5, a heck of a deal and better than the fish tacos we had at Maya Del Sol just recently. The sauces were good, the hot sauce wasn't as hot as a I like it, but it was very tasty, a creamy orange habanero mix. I will go back, it's a winner. Great value, nice service, excellent food.

Everyone kept reviewing this place and it is only about ten minutes from my home, so I had to try it. Unless you are looking for it, or shopping in that plaza, it is likely you won't see it. I certainly never did. It is a very small but that really didn't deter anyone from this place because it was packed when I went (lunchtime on a friday). The line was long, but let me tell you, the food was worth the wait. The menu is limited to burritos, tortas, tacos, quesadillas---either a la carte or combos with beans and rice. I ordered a chorizo taco and a beef taco authentic mexican style (cilantro and onion) and side of beans and a medium drink. My husband ordered the pork tacos. They are $2.39 each. You can also get them american style with lettuce, tomato, and cheese. Side of beans was only $2.00 more. The medium drink comes with unlimited refills TO INCLUDE Horchata! Mmm, I love Horchata! After we ordered, we grabbed a table and waited for our food. As we were waiting, an employee brought us free chips and salsa! Awesome!! The salsa was great and had a lot of flavor. I love when my salsa has lots of cilantro and big chunks of onion and this was just that. It wasn't long before our food arrived, hot and fresh. The employee also asked us if we wanted any mild or hot sauce, since they make their own. If you like it spicy., get the hot stuff! It was extremely flavorful. My tacos were good, but my husbands were better. If you're gonna get the tacos get the pork tacos. They are thick, juicy, marinated pieces of pork that are nicely charred. I loved them! The employees work hard here. Not only are they friendly but one of the girls was running around serving people their food, cleaning off tables, bringing people additional sauces and sides, and sweeping up the floors. Even with all the people that come in and out, this place remains spotless! The only reason I didn't give this place five stars is because of the prices. Its a little expensive in comparison to other taco joints I have been to. They also had another hidden menu off to the side that offered taco combo specials and a cuban sandwich! Wish I would have seen it before I ordered, could have saved some money on the tacos and I probably would have ordered the cuban. Keep your eyes peeled. Also, where are the tamales?? Very clean overall, great service, mouth-watering pork tacos, free chips and salsa, and all the horchata you can possibly drink! Enjoy :-)

The best! Fantastic fresh Mexican food, super convenient location, speedy service. What more could you ask for? I frequented this place when it first opened and I'm so happy that they've become more popular (not like I love a line, but they definitely deserve it). If you eat in, you get legit chips and salsa that are super tasty. Horchata's delicious! I always gets the chili relleno tacos and they are to die for. To be honest, I haven't had much else on the menu, but that's only because I'm happy with what I normally get. This place is a go-to for me and if you live in Bolingbrook and haven't tried it yet, you crazy.

This is a very cozy place. Looks more like a cafe than a Taco place. The lobby is clean with the contemporary decoration. I was on the way to see my Dr. and found this place from yelp app. This place is not easy to find in this shopping mall. In the end, I found the Payless store first then see this Taco Diner. You will need to order the food at the counter first which is in the back. I know my favorite taco is fish taco. So I quickly decided on the two fish tacos, one steak taco, and rice water (wanted Jamaica but they don't have). The complimentary chips and salsa were great. The tacos came pretty quickly. I loved the fish tacos. The fillet was grilled to a nice brown color without breading and seasoned just right. My favorite type of fish taco. The steak one was pretty good but a bit greasy for me. I actually mentioned this place to the nurse during my appointment. She actually knew this place and said the fish taco was the best. I am just glad to find another awesome place for fish tacos.

Hidden gem!!! Absolutely great food! Seems as if there may have been an ownership change but the food is still great...a little pricey but it's worth it. When you hear the name you probably skip over it but it's definitely worth stopping by and grabbing a meal!

I've been driving past this place daily for I don't know how long and didn't have the least bit of curiosity to try it because it's booked between a Payless and a Panera Bread and the name throws it off to me... Taco Diner sounds like a hokey name when you're looking for authentic tacos (I work in Cicero so I know good authentic tacos) but I'm glad I finally did! This place is VERY good and couldn't believe it's been under my nose this entire time! Everything tasted great. I HIGHLY recommend you take the same leap I did. You won't regret it!

This place is by far the best Mexican place and my default restaurant almost every week... Their food is consistently delicious and the service is nice! I usually order chicken tacos or quesadillas there, which are perfectly cooked and taste better than the same order I would get from some other Mexican place. They make their food with a certain crispness and freshness, which you will have to taste and see for yourself. I can't believe a restaurant like this is only 5 minutes from my home! This is the type of place I wouldn't mind driving far too.

This is a great hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. It sounded generic and inauthentic by the name, but the food is great. Much better food than other places around. You can never go wrong with their pork. The service is great and restaurant seems clean. I'll keep coming back.

Great food, served quick and it won't hurt your wallet too much. I had the steak super burrito. Definitely one of the largest I've ever had. I could barely finish the chips and salsa they give you for free. Knowing that this place is a 5 minute drive from my house makes it 10 times better.

Did I miss something? How in the world does this place have 4.5 out of 5 stars? Maybe it's because I grew up on the streets of San Francisco and ate at dozens of taquerias, but the tacos here were ATROCIOUS. I got a pork taco and chorizo taco, and when they showed up, they already smelled kind of strange. Chalking it up to my allergies messing with my nose, I took a bite of the pork and holy sodium chloride, Batman! The meat was incredibly salty! And it had this weird...almost Chinese food-tasting sauce to it. I didn't come to this place for fusion cuisine. I choked down another bite of the pork before I turned to the chorizo. I can say without hyperbole that I almost gagged. It tasted like smelly feet and a petting zoo and freshly cut grass all mixed together. Now there's nothing wrong with freshly cut grass, but there is a time and a place for it! And it's not when I'm getting tacos for lunch! I gave up at that point and tried to eat $7 worth of free chips (but I passed on the salsa. Tasted like they mixed hot dog juice in with it) and downed a couple glasses of Coke. 1/5, would not recommend.

This place is awesome. No matter what I order it's great. Everything seems fresh. The guacamole is fantastic. The people are super nice and accommodating. They always make me what I want even when it's not on the menu. This is five stars for sure.

The food and the service are great. The chilie rellenos are spicy but not too hot. My only gripe is you can't get the chips to go but other than that it was a very good meal.

  • Jim N.

This is by far, THE best authentic Mexican restaurant in the area! The food is delicious and the staff's friendly demeanor is genuine. We've tried many Mexican places in our area and this one is head and shoulders above the competition! It's a little hard to find, but well worth the trip. We drive past many on the way, and quite frankly, I'd drive twice that far. If you do decide on Taco Diner you absolutely have to order their Tamale. This is the largest and meatiest pork tamale on the planet! You can mix your tacos with 3 different meats. Orders take a few minutes so use that time to enjoy the complementary tortilla chips with 3 salsas.

  • Philip P.

Free unlimited chips with THREE DIFFERENT SALSAS?!?! That on top of them hooking you up fat with burritos that have been stuffed to the brim with perfectly seasoned beef, cheese, and vegetables?!? This place is nothing short of perfection and leaves me beyond satisfied every time. SIDE NOTE: void any bad reviews given from other users, I have received no problems at this establishment.

  • Todd B.

I love this place. The only thing I don't like is that people have found it. They get pretty busy now. Nothing like some chain places around with hour plus waits, just busy. Great chips. Tried the nachos tonight, something I usually don't do because most places have crappy chips for nachos. They were delicious. The fish tacos on the side menu are cheap and good. Grilled talapia rather than fried cod like most. They don't do cabbage and chipotle sauce. Just lettuce and tomato, but they are still very good. I like the chili rellenos too. Burrito can be a bit dry. They have beer as well. Not bad for a burrito joint.

  • Katy J.

We love Taco Diner. We've never been able to dine in cause it's always busy when we try! Flautas are delicious and my husband loves their tacos. They also have the BEST salsa. Give it a try you will not be disappointed.

  • Alex S.

This place lives up to the name Taco Diner by making some really great tacos. I ordered off the a la carte menu and picked two pork tacos at $2.39 each. While a little on the pricey side (which is why I chose to give it four stars) they were amazing. The pork in these tacos was marinated perfectly and really had some great flavor. I would recommend getting it with raw onion and cilantro and add some of their hot sauce (just ask for it!). One thing I found to be a little confusing is on the menu they list chips and salsa. What the menu does not say is that if you decide to dine in, they chips and salsa are free! They came out warm and the salsa was really good. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and will be going back again in the near future.

  • Vedran A.

After all of the reviews I stopped here to eat for lunch. No offense but this is not a 5 star joint. I do like the various types of salsas given upon having a seat. The chips are a tad on the hard side. The steak tacos are good enough but not great. Cut of meat is descent. The beans and rice are bland but edible. This is a good taco joint for the area but nowhere near quality the masses claim.

Taco Diner is the best taqueria in Bolingbrook and possibly the best in the suburbs overall. It's more than just a fast food place, in that it is well decorated and if you dine in, you get some really great chips and salsa with your meal. They even have free wifi, which I love for when I get out of work and want to just sit and relax for a while by myself and mess around on my phone. The food itself is as good or better than any other taqueria. I always order the chile relleno tacos, which are phenomenal. The chiles are usually fresh out of the fryer and piping hot which is not always the case at some other places. The staff is really friendly, too. I enjoy every part of the experience of eating here. There's a Panera next door, and I can't imagine why anyone would eat there when they could go to Taco Diner instead!

  • Jacqui M.

My husband and I are done with this place, which is a shame because it's so close and the food is good. But we always order take out, and since my last review, EVERY TIME we order here they get at least one thing wrong. Is it so difficult to get one tostada with sour cream and one without? Also, they give lemons instead of limes. I know there's a lime shortage right now, but it would be nice if they at least told you they don't have limes instead of just giving you lemons and thinking you won't notice/care. We're just sick of coming home with our order and getting pissed off. Any go-to restaurant should have good food AND reliable service. We'll be looking for a new Mexican place.

  • Michael R.

Taco Diner is a good, not great, quick Mexican place. I agree with what others have said about the prices, a bit high for a suburban strip mall, but you get a good amount of food. Street style steak and pork tacos are good-with corn tortillas, cilantro and onion and when you dine in, they bring you chips (decent) and a good medium salsa. I've had the American nachos before and they were good-very large portion. I had the cheese enchiladas for my most recent meal, and those were average, and the beans and rice are decent, but could be spiced up a little. Better than an El Famous Burrito or El Burrito Loco due to the cleanliness and freshness of the produce, quality of meats.

  • Silk W.

This is my favorite mexican food resturaunt. I lovvvve their beans and rice. I rrally enjoy their chips and salsa. The food is fresh. The service is great. Sometimes they arent as fast as Id like but its worth it for all the positives. The Torta Cubana is phenomenal. When I tried it the first time it melted in my mouth with flavor. The second time I had high expectations and it was probably 9 out of 10 instead of 11 out of 10 on my first try.

This is one of our favorite local spots for a casual dinner or Mexican take out. Food is authentic and prices are very reasonable. We've never had a bad meal here ever! We stop by once a week to buy a carton of their fresh salsa, also fantastic!

Been here twice now. On the first visit I would have given it four stars. Tonight the food was somehow bland, but salted heavily. The place is otherwise nice, clean and with good service. But the food doesn't do much for me.

Mmmmm steak tacos!! I can't get over how yummy they are. I always get them Mexican style with onions and cilantro and they're delicious! And the hot and mild sauce is perfect. I love this place and have frequent cravings for it. The chips and salsa are delicious and the people that work here are awesome! So nice and friendly always! Taco Diner is my go to Mexican in the area!

I simply love the food. Best steak tacos ive had in a long time. Also very reasonable and they offer wifi and outside seating. I would definitely recommend you trying this place if you're in the area. Its in a strip mall basically so dont anticipate parking right next to the restaurant.

  • Andrew T.

I'm with Sue T - this place is definitely nothing special. Ordering seemed very confusing with items coming incorrectly or not at all, and the food, while fine, is not enough to bring me back. My ground beef enchiladas are the same enchiladas you could get from any kind of order by number Mexican place. We came here to avoid our usual stops in Aurora, just looking for something different, but it really wasn't all too different. The staff were friendly, yes, but I can't eat that. I'll continue looking for a good quick Mexican place.

I had the enchilada suizas with red sauce. Amazing! The guacamole and three salsas are fun too.

  • Alexandra J.

Really awesome food. The beef and chicken tacos are both flavorful and delicious. They were filled with a good amount of meat too, instead of more lettuce to meat that I find common at other restaurants. The chips and salsa were super yummy too. You get them free when you dine in! The restaurant itself is clean, nice, and fresh looking. The only minor problem I noticed was when I ordered take-out chips, that one order of chips is plenty to split among 5 or so people, but they gave us two very measly containers of salsa. There was enough salsa for about 10 chips. Fix this minor issue by either giving more containers to-go or making the containers larger (like the size served in the restaurant) to hold more salsa. Other than that, perfect tacqueria :).

First time here as a result of our usual Mexican joint being unexpectedly closed. Very small but cozy location. The young lady working was charming and made and excellent recommendation (the aptly named "taco dinner" dish). The tacos (you get the option of any meat; I chose chicken, ground beef, and steak) were delicious! The salsa and chips we also quite good. The rice was a little dryer than I like it but my wife enjoyed it. The only down side was that it seemed a bit pricey considering the arrangement. That said, I would come back so the price is manageable.

This place is delicious! Great service, friendly people, and yummy tacos! I've been to many places in Bolingbrook and this is the best taco place in town! The steak tacos have lots of great grilled beefy authentic flavor!!! New fave place! Will be back!

  • Heather J.

My very favorite Mexican place in town. They know they're good though and it shows. They up charge for little things, have long wait times sometimes, and very limited seating. For the great quality of food... They should have a much bigger place. Like the old La Hacienda joint down the street (thank goodness that place is gone!) Add some drinks and you wouldn't be able to keep me out of that place!

By far the best tacos in the area. The service is always great. I have never been disappointed. The first no greasy taco meat I have had in the Chicago area.

This place is awesome. Staff is very friendly and ready to serve. The food is authentic and incredibly good. Do yourself a favor and make sure you get the fresh made guacamole plate for your chips.

Loved everything here! I tried fish, lengua, chicken and pastor tacos and all of them were amazing! The cashier and server were very polite and professional also. I would visit every week if this restaurant weren't so far away from downtown.

I think that in order for a Mexican restaurant to truly be considered Mexi-CAN it HAS to have good salsa. Guess who had good salsa???(pointing at Taco Diner), that's right, TACO DINER! It's a small little joint with about 10 tables. I imagine they get most of their business from take out. The first thing I noticed is the cleanliness and the Baños sign. Not Bathrooms, Baños. Awesome. You order and pay at the front, then they bring the food. They start you off with ridiculously addicting Chips y Salsa. I had to have a sope, since you don't find those in the burb's, it was pretty good but I've definitely have had better. So I'll skip those next time. I also ordered 2 steak flautas and 1 chicken flauta. Topped with some lettuce, sour cream and their red salsa...... DAAAYYYUMMM. Nuff said. I tried my friends steak enchiladas and I could not believe how delicious they were. I've never had steak enchiladas. It was all in the juicy, moist, delicious beef. The men had tacos, which looked pretty delicious topped with their cilantro and onion and a squirt of lime. The prices are a little on the high side; $30 for 2 of us. The service though, was outstanding. They knew my friend since she goes there often. Good thing I don't live out there, otherwise they'd know my name too.

Delicious, fresh food. Friendly staff. Clean restaurant. The complimentary chips and salsa were delicious. The food was flavorful and not expensive. I can't wait to return!

The steak torta was solid and I can't complain about the complimentary chips and salsa. The woman working the counter was friendly and suggested their daily lunch special. I'll definitely go back again to try other dishes.

Just done right! There are no bells and whistles, just a clean simple dining area and good consistent food. I first thought the prices were a bit high but when you take into account the portion sizes and the free chips, it is very reasonable. All of the food tastes great and not pre-packaged. Their salsa and hot sauces are fresh and have great flavor. The staff is alsohappy to explain menu items. I go every time Im in Bolingbrook!

We've only eaten here one time so far, but had a variety of items from the menu. The salsa was excellent. The fajitas were fantastic, chicken tacos, flautas, and guacamole were great, beans were good, and rice was ok. We also had nachos which were good, but minus the sour cream. The nachos have the canned cheese on them and the sour cream/cheese just do not seem to blend well. The staff was extremely friendly and even offered breakfast if we were interested. Th restaurant was very clean and well maintained. We will be going back...regularly!

I go here pretty regularly with my family and its delicious every time. I usually get the fish tacos, Mexican-American style with lettuce cheese and tomatoes with a side of guacamole. Qué sabrosa! Everything is fresh. The chips are delicious too. The service is outstanding. Definitely recommend it for lunch or dinner.

I hope locals are not offended by 4*... I can eat tacos in the Mission in San Francisco any time... it's a pretty high bar to measure up to. Taco Diner rings the bell, though, solid! I tried the $8.99 taco dinner special - three soft tacos (you can get them either autentico with onion + cilantro or americano with tomato and cheese). Tried the lenga, carne asada and al pastor. All very good. The carne asada was really balanced and savory - lots of good steak there! The al pastor was a little spicier and mouth-fillling. The lengua was light and tender. The tacos were both generous and un-greasy (I wouldn't have complained at a little more grease but these are going to be easier on your body). Three salsas were delivered to the table with complimentary chips... all salsas pass the Mission Taste Test! pico de gallo style fresh and bursting with flavor. red chili had moderate but nice heat, again well-balanced flavors. the tomatillo was very fruity-fresh. I ate 'em all con gusto. Service was fast and super friendly. The restaurant, (hiding in the back of a strip center) was attractive, clean and comfortable. I'll be happy to go back! The only reason for a missing star is packaged tortillas. I can't blame them, it's not practical to make them at this site and the nearest tortillerias are downtown Chicago. The tortillas they served were fine... but you know how fresh home-made tortillas can really spoil you. Smile, there is hope for those with taco withdrawal symptoms here in the Big Windy.

This place is the real deal. We have become regulars and have to have a taco fix at least once a week. The food is fresh and authentic. The staff is friendly and the place is clean. We are so happy to have finally found authentic Mexican in our neighborhood.

Taco Diner has surprisingly good Mexican food. It's a step up from most of the fast food Mexican options in area. I've been there a few times and every time I go, I remember how much I like the food. Nothing they do is outstanding to the point where you rave about it, but nothing is mediocre either. It's all in the good range. The only thing that I'd like to see are some healthier options available - one reason I stay away from Mexican is that it's so heavy. My favorite menu item are the nachos. Also, the chile relleno tacos are really good. I was surprised to get an entire chile relleno in each taco - it's a good example of the quality this place puts into each dish. Just make sure you're hungry when you go, like most Mexican places, the portions are gigantic.

I'm surprised by all the great reviews I read on Yelp for Taco Diner. I guess that's just proof that there are so few good Mexican restaurants. I thought the food was sort of bland, and cold. Maybe the cooks weren't playing there "A" game today. We might try it again, but not too soon.

I'm puzzled by the rave reviews for this place. The food was average at best. My burrito suizo was coated with watery, runny salsa. One person at our table ordered a side and never received it. The staff were friendly and well-intentioned but I think there are better Mexican food choices in the area.

4.5 stars From the exterior ,and the clean, new-looking interior it looks like that mediocre Mexican place that's in many suburban areas, but that couldn't couldn't have been any further from the truth! Chicken and pork tacos were just amazing! Priced nicely at $2.19 as they weren't bite sized either. Got a carne asada super burrito and it was just flawless! Good combination of meat and lettuce/tomato and the steak had a delicious seasoned taste to it. Was somewhat confused when I saw my super burrito as it didn't appear all that big, maybe 8 inches in length, which doesn't constitute a bigger tan normal burrito in my book, especially when I finished that and my tacos at the same time.

I really like good authentic Mexican and Taco diner definitely brings it. Have you ever had really bad Mexican? Well, I have and it's nothing worse than finding yourself chewing a nasty gristle in every bite of your chicken burrito. You won't find that at taco diner. Instead, you'll stumble upon all white meat chicken and authentic Mexican flavors. I've had their tacos, burritos and flautas, all delish! The guac is extremely fresh and super chunky, with hints of lime and cilantro it's one of my favorites. Even the rice and beans are flavorful, which are a total plus in my book.

Pretty disappointed with this place. Saw the great reviews but I was wary from the name "Taco Diner" and eating mexican in the midwest(as I live in Arizona......which is.......drum roll..... NEAR MEXICO!) lol Anyway, the food is VERY generic mexican. The prices are way too high for a strip mall restaurant. The chips and salsa were good and complimentary. But that's the best thing I can say about it. Save your money if your standard for Mexican is higher than a "diner" that has tacos and other blah mexican.

    1. If It's not broke, don't fix it.. It's not broke so don't fix it. Everything they do, they do it very well. Don't mess with success. 2. In 1 year, a business will live or die on what they do & it will be beyond repair. Taco Diner has MORE that hit it's stride and they just keep on going. 3. I ventured off and had a steak taco- excellent. 4. Sometimes, you find treasure when you least expect it. After almost 2 years, you have become an absolute gem. Bottom line. Keep up the good work!!!! Nice to know I got to review you first.

Good, I will go back when visiting the parents again, but damn, I have had some real good, authentic Mexican food, and this was good, but not 5 stars good. Homemade chips and salsa are close to a five star, but the flimsy corn taco shells, and decent, but not great meat make this a very solid 3. If you have never had authentic Mexican, this place would be a 5 all day long- but alas, I am a bit spoiled. I'll hit it up again and see if maybe I just caught a bad plate- we had the taco special, and a taco salad with chips and salsa as a side.

I went to Taco Diner for the first time right around its opening in December 2010. Since then, it's been my Friday night haunt almost weekly (except during Lent, as I could hardly bear to be vegetarian when I could smell the meat upon entering). I should mention though, the one Lenten Friday I did visit, I got the cheese quesadilla and never before have I experienced so much tasty cheese in a quesadilla. Being a Wisconsin girl, it was a pretty amazing experience. Prior to visiting TD, my favorite Mexican dish was chicken enchiladas suizas. In my early days at TD, this was my favorite meal. The chicken is always tender and flavorful. After ordering this for nearly 2 months, I decided to try something different. I began my journey with steak enchiladas suizas with salsa verde and haven't been able to order anything else since. The steak is as juicy as you'd order at a steak house. The seasonings are absolutely delectable and the salsa verde has just the right amount of zing to make this dish the perfect blend of spicy and savory (note, it comes with red salsa unless you order verde). Their chips are excellent - crispy and salty without being too oily. Over the time we've frequented the restaurant, they've changed and perfected their salsas. The traditional is fresh with a great balance of garlic, tomato and spice. The salsa verde is my favorite of any I've ever tried (and with Mexican food being my favorite, there have been quite a few). They also have what they term a hot salsa, but I would call it smoky more than anything. Again, the taste of this one is excellent All three have a good balance of heat and flavor. We can never order just one! The service is outstanding, as well. Because we've become regulars, they know us well enough that they've begun predicting our orders. Everyone is always friendly and the wait is never very long. I can't pull myself away from the steak enchiladas, but my friend often gets the pork tacos - Mexican style with cilantro and onions... Very tasty. The pork is also delicious, as is the chicken. I would absolutely recommend TD to anyone who wants good Mexican food. This is literally the best place I've found in the Chicago area since I moved here in 2004 and I'm lucky enough for it to be located only minutes from home. I hope they will one day expand to serve liquor, as well. I can only imagine how great the margaritas would be if they came close to the caliber of the food. Bottom line - try Taco Diner today or your taste buds are truly missing something wonderful!

This place is as good as everyone says. I was surprised by this, but it's true. I had steak tacos with rice and beans. My wife had chicken flautas. They were huge portions and really, really good! The place is small so you're lucky if you get a table during popular times of day, but the service is good and the food is worth the wait.

The search is over! I have been looking for great tasting authentic Mexican food out in the suburbs, and this place is even BETTER than Chicago food. That's right! The chips, salsa, tacos, sopes, steak, burrito, beans, horchata...everything we had was absolutely DELICIOSO! I can't wait to come back! Even my picky toddler enjoyed his beans and chips. If I lived within walking distance I'd eat here daily. Thank God I don't (I can afford to save quite a few calories). This will definitely be our family's spot from now on. Can't wait to come back. Mmmmmm! Don't let the name confuse you into thinking its a Tex Mex "Taco Bell" kinda place. 100% Authentic!

So disappointed in Taco Diner. We've been coming here since you've opened and I posted one of the first raving reviews. It seems now in your popularity you are skimping on meat in your burritos (which is the only thing we ever get when we go there). This past week, my husband carried out and we live at least 15 minutes away (so 30 min round trip). He brought the food home and I cut into the burrito to find it was made up 90% of lettuce and sour cream inside. Very little steak. The cost of this place is higher than other burrito joints, so we expect better. There was probably 2 tablespoons of chopped steak in the whole thing. It used to be full of mostly steak. This has happened on our last three visits (we've only dined there three times in the last 6 months as the quality seems to be going down). This time I decided that we are going to call and complain, which my husband did. All the lady said was, "we are open until 10". My husband arrived to return the food and she offered to make replacements to which my husband said no. You think she'd comp the cost of at least the the $5.00 horchata rice milks (2) for the inconvenience that we also paid for? Nope. She only reimbursed for the 2 burrito suizo dinners. We won't be coming back. Sad, because we used to love this place. Now it appears they are cost cutting by cutting back on the meat.

This is the only mexican joint in a 5 mile radius I haven't tried. I walked in one evening and it was hotter than Hades inside. I ordered the Taco dinner(chicken with cilantro, beans and rice on the side.) I took my drink outside to the seating with an umbrella to cool off, and wait for my food. Free chips and salsa were given. I liked the chips and dip! Too bad that was the highlight of my visit. The wait wasn't long to get my dinner outside to me. The tacos looked great. After I finished my 1st taco, I noticed the 2 left were cooling off. By my third taco it was a little cold. The beans and rice are like any other mexican place. I am sure the other menu items are good, but this taco dinner wasn't as great as I was expecting from the reviews I was reading. I'll stick to the mex places closer to me.

Best Mexican food in the area! The steak tacos and burrito are fantastic. Tilapia special is quite tasty as well. The salsas are very good; make sure to ask for the green salsa to change it up a bit. The service is great--very quick and friendly. While this is your typical strip-mall atmosphere, it is clean and welcoming. If you want atmosphere, go to La Hacienda. If you want to enjoy your food, go to Taco Diner. Just go!

I kind of hate the name "Taco Diner." For me, it brings to mind a greasy Tex-Mex hole-in-the-wall with terrible food and a warning from the Bureau of Health. Happily, Taco Diner transcends its name! It's small, to be sure, but it's nice inside (not at all a hole-in-the wall), and it has outdoor seating for days when you'd rather enjoy your Mexi al fresco. They have free chips and salsa, which are fresh and delicious. Love that salsa. In my two visits, I've had the chicken flautas, were good, but not great, and the torta de carne asada, which was AMAZING. Deliciously seasoned carne asada, bread with a nice crust on it, just fab. (And it's huge.) My one complaint: It doesn't come with avocado on it, but you can add it on for an upcharge. Taco Diner has made it into my regular lunch rotation! Next time you're craving casual Mexican in the 'brook, you should give it a shot.

So after becoming practically a regular now figured a review was in order. I'm straight up from the 'hood Mexican but with a fairly discriminating palette I'd like to think :) and this place passes the test. We've had the tacos, flautas, chiles rellenos, tampiquena, and nachos. We haven't been disappointed once. The food is simple and straightforward; although they don't have options llike tacos de tripa (tripe) or lengua (lengua), what they do have they do it well. Like another reviewer said stick to what you're doing cause it works. My mom (you can't get more authentically Mexican than that) said its like what we cook at home. I've tried other places in Bolingbrook and this in my humble opinion is the best.

Today was my first time eating here. I didn't even know this place was around. The tacos (soft) are inexpensive (at $2.19) and they have a pretty large menu. I tried 2 of the authentic Mexican style tacos (one chicken and the other beef). Both were delicious and had cilantro, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and on the meat. They were served in about 5 minutes after I put in my order. Very quick and accurate service. The waitress even complimented it with the red and green sauces. Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that they give you a mild salsa and chips if you dine-in... I Rate 5/5 because for a "diner" I felt this place had fast-food speed and accuracy and it was extremely clean with nice furnishing and beautiful waitresses. And there is adequate dining space with 7 4-seater tables and 3 window seats. Of course I visited this place around 5pm on Thursday so it wasn't too busy. BUT since the staff are efficient, I bet they are good even at their busiest. OH YEAH, and to my surprise this place actually serves beer, both domestic and Mexican. This place is located in between the Jewel-Osco and Panera Bread in Bolingbrook... Its the best taco restaurant I've tried near the newer side of Bolingbrook that has menu items less than $10, I'd recommend you try it. Only thing I wish is that on Fri/Sat nights they were open till like 1 or 2 AM instead of their 10PM closing time.

As far as hole-in-the-wall Mexican food places go, this one is very clean -- even the restrooms. The guy working the front wasn't terribly friendly -- it was painfully obvious he'd rather be doing something else than work at this restaurant. I ordered the grilled chicken taco plate. The tacos were pretty good, but the chicken was not grilled. I don't know if it was just inattentiveness on behalf of the front guy. I also noticed that the same thing I ordered was a lunch special on the way out -- but since I never ordered it as a special, I got charged full price. The chips were oily and really hard to bite into. The salsas, however, were very good. Would I come back? Mmm, I'm not sure yet. For the same price there are some really decent Mexican places around -- my first thought is Front Street Cantina in Plainfield/Naperville, or even La Hacienda off of Weber, down the road from this joint. On the plus side, you can hijack the Panera wifi next door! Or, maybe I'll just go there next time...

You know it's a good place when there is a line of people ordering, and almost all the tables are full at 7pm on a cold windy Saturday Night. Very good little carry-out and sit-down Mexican Food Restaurant. Restaurant, well more like a place where you order at the counter, but they do bring the food to you on plates rather than in a bag. Don't be surprised by the name, Taco Diner....they have much more than tacos. Very Good Chip and Excellent Salsa. I would come here an buy the salsa at $4 bucks a quart rather than get it from the grocery store, it's that good. The food is fresh, light....not heavy or greasy. We had a Steak Quilsadilla, Steak & Chicken Enchiladas, and a Tamale. Everything was very good except the Tamale, maybe skip that one next time. Unlimited Gold Peak Iced Tea on Tap, and free chips and salsa when you dine in. Overall a nice little place. They are in the Jewel Shopping Center, near Boughton/Weber Road....not easy to see from the street, which is why I never knew it was here until today. I will go back!!

We originally went here due to the high ratings on yelp. What else can i saw but you guys are right again! For what a hole in the wall place it seems, the flavors and freshness of all the ingredients will blow you away. We had the taco dinner with pastor, chicken and steak, and honestly it was tough to pick my favorite, they were all so good! Also tried the enchiladas, incredible! There is a lot of sit down restaurants in the area that can't hold a candle to this places flavor! Will be back, and soon!

This is some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. They use prime steak. You don't see that in too many places. Their rice is tasty and beans are freshly made. El pastor is mighty tasty as well. You gets chips salsa if you dine in. The employees are all very friendly as well. I would totally recommend trying this place out.

Came here with my nephew and my ol lady the other night kind of out of desperation at 7 pm on a Saturday. This is more of a fast food type mexican joint with better ingrediants, If you are looking for full service sit down you should look elsewhere. Upon entering we sat down and started looking at the menu and found no kids options. Our server came over and i asked her about a kids menu and she told me they didnt have one. I just ordered hime something from the regular menu. A few mins later the server came to the table and asked me to pay, I was like uh ok....so I walked up to the register and paid...then noticed that they had a big board menu above the counter and low and behold..... DUN DUN DUN!!!!! A KIDS MENU DAG GUMMIT why did she tell me they didnt have one? BOGUS....after my meal I was assuming that it may have been her first week on the job ah well.... The food here was AWESOME and fresh...i could see the cooks chopping up fresh beef in the back from where we sat. Prices were also very reasonable. Best thing about my dinner is when we were walking out after we were through the owner/manager stopped us and asked us how everything was....I LOVE when they do this out of sincerity...I will be back *ARNOLD VOICE*

Best steak tacos I have ever had. We are SO glad we finally stopped in at Taco Diner after reading about it on Yelp - we finally found a terrific local place for Mexican food! I tried a sampling of Tacos - the Pastor, Chile Relleno and Steak, all Mexican style (Cilantro and Onions). The Steak taco really stood out - amazing flavor! Mom had the Chicken Tacos, a Chicken Tostada and a Tamale. Everything was excellent - fresh ingredients and great flavors. I'd continue to rave about this place, but not sure what else I could say that has not already been said! If you are looking for great, not greasy, fresh-tasting Mexican food - give this place a try, you will not be disappointed!

Great Mexican place! Delicious, fast and cheap. I was trying to think of a reason to give the 4 1/2 stars but I couldn't come up with one. The salsa is excellent, chips are crispy, meat has great flavor, portions on nachos are sick, in a good way. I've tried enchiladas and burritos too and they are excellent.

I use to go to Panera next door and study in the mornings and I would see people just piling into this place for lunch. I thought I would give it a try and loved it. This is possibly the best Mexican food around. Their service is great and for such a small operation this place is spotless. Loved the enchiladas verdes.

My husband and I have been here 5 times (sometimes dine-in, but mostly carryout) and we have had nothing but THE best food. After eating at El Burrito Loco for years, we can never go back after trying Taco Diner. We both agreed that this is how Mexican should taste: not dripping with grease, actual meat-looking meat, nothing questionable looking. Who knew that refried beans could taste fresh?! The prices are reasonable for the large portions and the guac is the best. However, I must point out that the service is always phenomenal and the gentleman that is always present is outstandingly friendly and goes above and beyond to make sure you have a great meal. There's no wi-fi but you can always borrow from Panera and they typically have whatever Chicago team is playing on the TV.

This place is just brilliant. Been there four or five times and its been great every time. I order the taco dinner Mexican-style so each taco is served with lime juice and cilantro as seasoning. The food is not fanciful but they get it right here, and though it might be one or two bucks more than I would expect to pay, the tastiness of the food, and the friendly service compensate. Since I lived in Cali for a number of years finding good Mexican food has been a personal quest. This place is now a staple.

FINALLY, a sweet little Mexican place nearby! Stopped in for lunch without consulting Yelp - sometimes it pays to roll the dice. My husband and I really enjoyed this little gem and will return with pleasure. Great salsa, clean kitchen, everything prepared with care - you can tell. Good food, clean, nice and simple decor, and very friendly service. I took my 6 year old son there for dinner this past week instead of our usual Panera (next door). He had the chicken quesadilla kids meal. For $3.99, it was a great bargain - quesadillas, beans, rice, and a drink. He loved it. I had the 2-taco special (one steak, one chicken) which were tasty - I liked that they had fresh cilantro and onion. Complimentary chips and salsa were a nice surprise and very tasty too. My only "complaint" (which it really isn't...it's more an observation) was that although the chicken was seasoned well and tasted good, it wasn't the traditional shredded chicken. Instead, the chicken was cut up in small cubes. No biggie though. Overall, I had a very good experience and will be back when I have a taste for quick, fresh, tasty Mexican.

Best Mexican food in the area. Very spartan restaurant, but friendly service and very clean. Not the cheapest place around -- I expected something less costly when I walked in and saw the counter where you order -- but it's worth the money. Steak tacos are the best!!

Enjoy :-)

The food and the service are great. The chilie rellenos are spicy but not too hot. My only gripe is you can't get the chips to go but other than that it was a very good meal.

  • Jeff B.

This is a great hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. It sounded generic and inauthentic by the name, but the food is great. Much better food than other places around. You can never go wrong with their pork. The service is great and restaurant seems clean. I'll keep coming back.

  • Patrick A.

Great food, served quick and it won't hurt your wallet too much. I had the steak super burrito. Definitely one of the largest I've ever had. I could barely finish the chips and salsa they give you for free. Knowing that this place is a 5 minute drive from my house makes it 10 times better.

We love Taco Diner. We've never been able to dine in cause it's always busy when we try! Flautas are delicious and my husband loves their tacos. They also have the BEST salsa. Give it a try you will not be disappointed.

Taco Diner is my go to Mexican in the area!

I simply love the food. Best steak tacos ive had in a long time. Also very reasonable and they offer wifi and outside seating. I would definitely recommend you trying this place if you're in the area. Its in a strip mall basically so dont anticipate parking right next to the restaurant.

Loved everything here! I tried fish, lengua, chicken and pastor tacos and all of them were amazing! The cashier and server were very polite and professional also. I would visit every week if this restaurant weren't so far away from downtown.

  • Sue T.

I'm puzzled by the rave reviews for this place. The food was average at best. My burrito suizo was coated with watery, runny salsa. One person at our table ordered a side and never received it. The staff were friendly and well-intentioned but I think there are better Mexican food choices in the area.

  • Stacey S.

I'm surprised by all the great reviews I read on Yelp for Taco Diner. I guess that's just proof that there are so few good Mexican restaurants. I thought the food was sort of bland, and cold. Maybe the cooks weren't playing there "A" game today. We might try it again, but not too soon.

Pleasantly surprised by the quality and authenticity of the tacos. Excellent salsa as well. I will definitely return.

Everything on the menu is great. The house chips while you wait make the wait worthwhile. Very authentic ,high quality, tasty food. ENJOY!

This place is as good as everyone says. I was surprised by this, but it's true. I had steak tacos with rice and beans. My wife had chicken flautas. They were huge portions and really, really good! The place is small so you're lucky if you get a table during popular times of day, but the service is good and the food is worth the wait.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
