We loved this place. Cutest little diner cafe feel like stepping back in time. The coffee was wonderful black. Ordered a couple of burgers (bun free for me) and they were fresh and delicious. The hand cut fries were hot and crisp. I order the green chile burger and it had fresh grilled green chilies which was a very nice surprise on a bed of lettuce.

Did I just step back into the 1940's? What a great place! The restaurant has been a Route 66 diner landmark since 1934 and still maintains an old fashioned, Art Deco feel with music from the 1940's filling the air. I had a delicious Reuben sandwich with fries, and asked for a side of dark gravy for the fries...delicious! For desert, I ordered a huge slice of chocolate mouse pie with whipped cream...fantastic. Reasonable prices, friendly service, and located across the street from a giant Paul Bunyan statue holding a hot dog...quirky and fun.

As I entered in to cafe. I thought for sure I went back in time. The staff were courteous and friendly. The cheeseburgers were wonderful!! Don't forget to sign the book if it's your first time in! This cafe is both Charming and Historic!!

Have not been there since the new owners took over. But in the past the food was not quality, service was slower than molasses. We waited over an hour to get food and none came together. Was ridiculous.

Only had dessert but I can say the banana cream pie was phenomenal. Completely homemade and worth the drive to Atlanta.

Excellent burger! Friendly service. I did not try the pies but they had a large offering of deep dish pies that looked great.

Once again Yelp led us to an awesome meal. Like being transported back 50 years to an old fashioned diner. Everything is made from scratch.

Very disappointing experience. After we left, we realized that most of the people in there ordered burgers and pie. We decided that if we had of done the same, we probably would have had a better experience. One of the people I was with ordered Shrimp Scampi. He was told multiple times that they would bring him the scampi sauce but he never received it. My boyfriend ordered the jambalaya. He isn't from Louisiana (like I am), but he immediately realized that it was nothing like jambalaya. There were whole crawfish hidden throughout the meal. I've never seen him waste a meal, but he barely ate any of it. I knew I was in trouble when we asked about gluten in the food and I was told they aren't very gluten free friendly. I figured I would find something to eat, despite the waitress dodging our questions about ingredients. I ordered the tenderloin sandwich (without a bun). I assumed it was a chicken tenderloin sandwich until I had eaten some of it and realized it was actually pork. I gave up pork about 10 years ago and felt very sick after realizing I had consumed pork. The staff were not very friendly either. This was our last stop on a nine day road trip and it was our worst experience of the trip.

New managers- Blue Plate special the rice was cold and the meat in the dish was nothing more than a burger- pie was serves ice cold no offer to warm up and despiite "original recipe" it was terrible. Burned and bland crust- Used to go there regularly under previous management doubt a second chance will be given to new management!

Cute restaurant in small town. Selected based on other yelp reviews. Ate there on a Sunday where they only offer their buffet from 10am to 2pm. We arrived at noon. Buffet looked a little picked over and no one was quick to replenish. My husband had the breakfast offerings: eggs, biscuit w gravy, ham and coffee. He enjoyed what he had. I selected the fried chicken which was the only lunch item beside fried white fish, salad fixings and soup. The chicken was so good, my husband went to get a piece. There were only small wings left. The manager said more was coming out of the kitchen but not while we were there. Our dessert was cherry pie, and it was tasty. I asked about the peach pie that other reviewer had raved about, but waitress said there were only 3-4 slices left and none were peach. Didn't have a milk shake but the next table over ordered several and they looked fantastic. They seemed to be doing a good business with tables filling up while we were there. Only one waitress on duty and she was doing her best but owner seemed surprised that she asked for help with clearing tables and filling drinks. Young lady only had two hands.

If you are traveling on Illinois' Route 66 - do yourself a favor and stop at the Palms Grill in Atlanta. This diner has been lovingly restored to it's 1930's glory days. The meals are classic diner faire with generous portions and the award wining pies can't be missed. My friend and I shared a ponyshoe - toast covered with meat (our choice hamburger) topped with fries and cheese - YUM and the pork tenderloin sandwich (the patty was big enough for 2 sandwiches), needless to say we had leftovers. But there was no way I was missing out on trying the pie - full or not, so I got my generous slice to go. Tart cherries and flakey crust, it's a good thing I don't live close by or I'd definitely be living on a pie heavy diet.

Amazing little store-front diner in a sleepy town that likely had its hey-day long before easy transportation and mega-malls. Four of us ate there a few weeks ago. We loved the Walleye (both dinner and sandwich). The hash browns were crispy shredded potatoes, just like they are *supposed* to be. The chili was good, too. We were not less impressed by the vegetable BLT soup and the onion rings. Where the restaurant really shines is their pies. Among the four of us (eating there and more later that evening from "to-go" pods), we had Cherry (my favorite), Pumpkin, Sour Cream Raisin (surprising me at how good it was), Pecan (near perfection), and Peach (which, if not for Cherry would be in a tough battle with the Pecan). We would have tried the Strawberry Rhubarb, but a mean person came in and bought all they had. So, be sure to arrive early for best selection, and you might order your pie at the start of the meal. You can always have it in a pod if you're too full to eat it there. We found this place via a magazine article on pie places along former US-66. We look forward to trying the others, and coming back to Palms again soon.

We had a terrible experience at the Palms Grill. My group and I waited over two hours for our food and one of the people in our group didn't even get his food. He ordered a salad. People were getting up and leaving because they were tired of waiting for the food. I ordered a patty melt and it was okay but not the best thing I ever had. With our wait, the management never came around to apologize or offer a discount on our meal. The atmosphere was good but the wait staff was rude and not to helpful. A girl in the group asked what was on a sandwich and our waitress replied - I have no idea. We will not be returning.

Wonderfully refurbished 50s-style cafe. The waitress and food were wonderful. She even got a local person who had just sat down for lunch to open up one of the museums that was closed (early May is still not really their big "season"). While the waitress was delightful, the decor fun and photogenic, and the breakfast food delicious, we did have one disappointment which changed our rating from 5 to 4 stars. Many of the Route 66 guidebooks and several people in Route 66 museums along the way strongly recommended The Palms Grill for their pies - many describing it as the best pie in the USA. We were there the Monday after Mother's Day and they were out of pie. We had decided to try a piece of one of the cakes in the display when the waitress (ever-helpful) said they were putting in some fresh apple pies to bake if we could wait a few hours. I told her apple is the only food I am allergic to, thanks anyway. A few minutes later she came back to say they were going to bake a blackberry pie if we could wait a few hours. Thrilled, we committed to return after touring the town and would buy the entire blackberry pie. The tour of murals, the smiley-faced water tower, gift store, and 3 museums took a few hours. When we came back to buy it, we were told to take it, but continue to let it "set" for a few more hours before cutting it. After all this special treatment and anticipation, you should have seen my face when I took the first bite. It was TERRIBLE. I spit it out. My husband tried it, also thought it was terrible. Of course, by then, we were several hours away, so we threw the rest of the pie in the trash. The cook left out something in the filling - whether it was sugar or a spice or both - or put something in that shouldn't have been. It was totally inedible. Lesson learned - when they say they are out of pie, get something else for dessert. Hate to post this because they were sooooo nice, but it is what it is.

We stopped at the Paul Bunyan statue across the street during a road trip, and saw this spot across the street so decided to go in for lunch. We were very pleasantly surprised with this quirky place. Our waitress was incredibly welcoming and had great stories of other travelers who have stopped in. The food was great! On our drive back 2 days later, we decided we had to stop back in for dinner and to try the pie. The chocolate cream pie was delicious, and the food the second time around was great too! Definitely would recommend as a stop to anyone passing near it!

Rob must not have eaten in the same restaurant we did. Folks, this is a rare gem in a small town. Love the soda pop in bottles, and very good pie. I had the dirty rice and a cup of the potato soup and all were great!!! Fonda our waitress and Tom the mgr. just made our lunch a great experience!!! Love the 50's style setting. Get to the Palms Grill Cafe as soon as you can.....

The Palms Grill is a treat when traveling on Route 66. It just recently opened back up after being closed for over 30 years. Originally, this was the happening place in Atlanta as it was the Greyhound bus stop and also hosted bingo parties as well. Hard to believe though, since walking through downtown is almost like a ghost town (which is good for picture taking anyway). The renovation is great. It has that old-timey diner feel. They really put a lot of effort to get it back to the original 1930s diner. There are blue plate specials and homemade pies. Can you say yummy! The food was awesome. Good prices and huge portions. The town of Atlanta is worth a visit. They have really embraced their Route 66 heritage and it shows.

I stopped through here during my Illinois leg of Route 66. It was a great little place. I loved the palm decor and they had an old South Pacific pinball machine and still used an old rotary phone. Just a wonderful atmosphere and reminder of how life used to be. My waitress was very nice and the locals added some color to the place. I had cheeseburger that was pretty good. I probably wouldn't get the chili again, it was a bit bland. But I would go back to this little place again. But good food, and great atmosphere and people.

My son and I stopped here as part of a Rt. 66 nostalgia tour - he's into cars and had never seen the Rt. 66 Museum in Pontiac. We loved the little town and its octagonal library and were charmed by the great food, cute decor and friendly service. We split two pieces of pie and considered taking more for the road, but since we had just had a big Thanksgiving dinner the day before, thought it better if we just came back another time! Definitely worth the visit - you won't be disappointed!

Good breakfast at a great price! We had Spam and Eggs, Veggie Skillet a piece of homemade pie and two drinks and it was under $20 with tax and tip! I haven't had Spam in a while but I had a taste for it. Unlike what many people think, Spam is made from pork shoulder, not lips and assholes (Kelly!). I used to eat Spam at my aunt's house many years ago so I needed to make it into a sandwich on rye bread with pickles and raw onions on top like she served it. Palms gave me the pickles and onion and the sandwich was great. My GF enjoyed the veggie skillet, also. The coffee was drinkable but not great. This is a great place to stop if you're on Route 66 and we'll definitely be making the trip here again soon. Atlanta has some interesting retro advertisements and a giant holding a hot dog both of which draw people to town.

Great place! Great food! One of the off menu breakfast specials when I went was a veggie skillet. The fried potatoes on bottom were sooo good and then it was all topped with grilled onion, peppers, mushrooms tomatoes, cheese and two eggs. Comes with toast for $4.95. We topped off our breakfast by splitting a slice of peach pie. Yeah, I know, no one should be eating dessert after breakfast but based on pie comments in other reviews, we just couldn't resist. The crust was superior and flavor was very good but a little scant on peaches compared to how I would make it at home. I ate around 9:45 and wasn't hungry again until 6:00 for dinner. I see this being a short drive, destination place for breakfast in our regular future.

Worth the little detour off the main road. And it's really not far off the path. Cute as a button. Friendly staff. Delicious lunch. Had pulled pork - $5.00 - bargain and tasty.

Found this place by accident, but were overall really happy with it. If you are looking for that Mayberry feeling and want to be taken back to the '30's or 40's, this is the place for you. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had a great experience and definately enjoyed the entire meal which included their pork tenderloin and Fresh Baked Pie.

This is a superb diner, capturing the flavor of the old style diner while providing a wide range of flavorful diner food. It has a superb small town feel and was a superb place to stop for breakfast and a break from the pressures of the day.
