Go there if you have a big appetite or if you want to have some great European food. This is a place with class and character and a great menu. A visit is due and soon!

What really bothers me about this place is that there are no prices whatsoever posted on anything in the entire bakery display case. Nor is there a board behind with prices like many a bakery would have. Zilch! Not only that there are no prices on anything on their website menus. I did see a price on one white sliced cheese in the deli, most all the rest unmarked too. Helen is a MAJOR tourist trap. A town with a population of 526 (2013 count) that receive over 2 million visitor a year! So one might say just ask, but should you really have to?? Do you really want to hold up these 2 plus visitors all waiting to be fleeced behind you? It's easier to just walk out! Do it! When a business feels they can gouge you for whatever they want, and that you have no business knowing what your going to be paying for something vote with your feet and go! Would you shop at a grocery store with no prices? I think not! When you find yourself in a major tourist trap and encounter this, I feel it is just totally unacceptable! Beware! I see another reviewer posts they charged $3 for an empty plate without any notice. There again, if it was posted I understand it in some places yes, but not posted or not advised and just throwing that on your bill too? Wrong again.

The closest thing to authentic German food I have had since I lived in Germany. Be patient though there is almost always a line but worth it. Ate breakfast, lunch and dinner here. All meals were exceptional.

OMG! Best Reuben sandwich I have ever had. Glad we stopped. Everything is fresh. Service was quick.

For coffee, sweet tea and a couple corn beef hash breakfasts with a side of grits will run around $25 with tip. Here is the thing you must remember about this place. They are very busy in the morning right up to insanely busy in the morning. What that means is be a little considerate as in expect to wait a bit for a table, don't expect to take your sweet time once your meal is complete. The sitting room is small and they turn the tables quickly. Despite the rush and close quarters it is worth it. The service is quick, nice, and the food great. Their corn beef hash is awesome and their breads are great as well. Some one complained about the prices not being displayed on the pastries. What is amazing is if you ask them they will let you know the price. To me a must breakfast stop if you are in their area.

I loved this Bakery & Cafe..so much to choose from and they also have a dining room also and outside eating area (patio) Tony and I stopped here on Saturday April 5th..IT was a very nice and unique bakery. They also had a deli with fresh meats and cheeses and BIER!!! You can get sliced meat and cheeses, or they can make you a sandwich. They also make some delicious breads and desserts. I could just eat my weight in sweets, cheeses and breads here!!! I wish I had my cooler so I could have gotten some cheese and meats to take home with us. I loved this store and bakery...the home cooking smelled so good also!!!

The lack of menu with prices for the bakery was indeed very annoying. My family and I rushed in here as our last stop at Helen, only because my dad's friend recommended their bakery. We got a variety of goods including the chocolate cannoli, cream puff, pretzel and the cookies (few more but can't remember). The cannoli was below average, ive had better ones in upstate ny. The pretzel did not match our tastebuds, too salty. The cookies and muffins werent that good. The creampuff was okay. My dad and brother liked it bc the whipped cream wasnt sweet. I personally would not go back. I think my dad might, just for the cream puffs. Maybe he was incredibly hungry or something. The coffee is super over priced. There was one small size (to go) cheap styrofoam cup, tasted like an average drip coffee from Publix, and it was like $4.

At 4.95 for a slice of cake, I thought it would have been delicious. We tried the blackforest trote, hazelnut trote and rum truffle trote. None of them were worth the money, it was atleast a day old.

Folks! It is worth the wait! Don't get discouraged by the long lines. It is a MUST eatery while in Helen. Preferably breakfast. They also have a great selection of German food (packaged) to purchase.

We arrived in Helen and stopped at Hofer's for a late lunch. We went with the lighter side of the menu and ordered sandwiches as opposed to heartier German entrees. I loved my Rueben sandwich, warm and oozing, making it slightly messy. The blended flavors of corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and dressing hit the spot. Unfortunately, the underside of the bread was soggy and by the time I finished, my sandwich was starting to fall apart. I also subbed German potato salad for chips and it was disappointing - cold with none of the flavors I'm used to in a German potato salad. The soup and 1/2 sandwich was abysmal and a waste of money. There was no line when we arrived, but we were slow to be acknowledged. If the hostess is going to bus tables, at least train the waitresses to let guests know someone will be with them shortly. Service is not the restaurant's strong suit. There's also a bakery counter with pastries and fresh baked breads. It looked like any one of numerous of bakery cases I've seen in my life, but nothing tempted us to buy. I do wish we had perused the German meat case more thoroughly. I probably would have found something to take home. We loved the atmosphere and I'd go back but with slightly lowered expectations.

Loved the breakfast so much, we came back the next morning. Tried a few things: corned beef hash, french toast, German porkchop, and potato hash. All pretty good. Service was fine, but beware of the massive line to get a table. Get there early! We grabbed a few of their desserts to snack on later. Perfect guilt pleasure. They also have a deli.

I visited with whole my family and their service was very bad. The waitress was not willing to explain their German food kindly. They even charged extra empty plate for 3 dollars each without notice. The food was just O.K. I will never come back.

Look, the food here is good. The sandwiches are respectable. I really enjoyed my ruben. The bread is outstanding. In fact, I have never had a bad experience here. And my friends always seem to look forward to the bakery. It's just sad (to me) that this gem of a restaurant is surrounded by shops that sell airbrushed t-shirts and cheaply made fudge. I love Hofer's. It seems a shame to me that the goodness this cafe produces has to be surrounded by such cheesy-tourism-oriented practices. For instance, does there really need to be a singer on the patio? And does he really need to sing the rated-g version of Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner?" (Then again, I suppose it could be worse. They could make the staff wear lederhosen...) I know I'm doing the restaurant here a disservice by telling you this, so I will say to you, the reader, that this one place in Helen is worth checking out. Go, hit the hills, take in the scenery, do a hike, and visit Hofer's as an isolated thing within the confines of the tourist-hell that Helen has become.

We stopped in here for a late lunch. It is the off season in Helen and there are lots of shops and restaurants that are closed during the week. If there are other places open, try somewhere else, at least for lunch. Walking in I felt like we were stopping into an old folks home, the decor needs some serious updating. The waitress we had was a grumpy thing until my husband put in a lot of effort to get her to lighten up and smile. Maybe he should have been given a tip. The food is average, not amazing. It's a bit pricey for the quality unless you grab a sandwich and chips. My husband had the soup of the day which was flavorful and wonderful. He also wanted a turkey sandwich on sourdough, try brought it out with nothing but bread and meat.... Really???? He had to ask for lettuce, tomato and mustard and then they charged us $.50 for the lettuce, come on, it's lettuce. I had the Reuben, which was actually pretty good, no complaints about it. The bakery choices looked amazing, so we opted to take some back to our cabin for later on. We took home the German chocolate cake and blueberry cheesecake. The cake was too dry for my liking, would not get this one again. The cheesecake had a nice surprise though, instead of a boring ole graham cracker crust it was a thin lemon cakey crust. It was delicious with the consistency of the cheesecake itself, however the downfall was the blueberry topping, can you say gummy? The fork would not cut through without peeling it off. I peeled it off and enjoyed the cake without it. The slices are pricey for the size and quality.

We had breakfast here. Started with blueberry muffins, they where awesome. I had the bacon onion scrambler, and enjoy it. Everything from the bakery looked good!!

Great place and great food! My family and I ordered lunch and pastries to go. The staff is very friendly and very accommodating. I brought my lab puppy, so we had to sit outside. The pretzel rolls and chocolate eclairs are a must have!

The place looks very nice from the outside. A cute european looking bakery. We went in full of great expectations. Sadly we were quickly disappointed. We wanted to sit down with some hot chocolate and a pastry. We wanted to pick the pastry from the showcase. Sadly we were told that wasn't possible. We had to order with our waitress. Sadly our waitress apparently found it more important to smoke then to attend us. It took a long time but after about 30 we had our pastry. Sadly our hot chocolate(which was not that great) was already cold by then. I have to say the pastries were quit tasty. But we already weren't in the mood anymore. To get the check was even a bigger struggle. After asking twice we got non to our request. After about 20 minutes we found our waitress and we could finally pay. I can not believe that they have a certificate of excellence from trip advisor.

This place gets crazy busy. It's really cute inside and have a wide variety of assorted German and Austrian goods. Nice little bakery at the front when you come in tempting you with all sorts of fattening wicked goodness. I ordered the lox plate with rye toast and the hubs a schnitzel with spaetzle and another side I forget. You can't really screw up lox since I am sure they pre buy it. My dish was pretty good. Well served and reasonably priced. My husband's on the other hand.. MEH. We only wound up here because another restaurant we wanted to go to was closed. I wouldn't come back unless it was to buy some german goods. Also tried the black forest cake which was kind of a let down. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't traditional.

Had a western omelet that had to have been 4-5 eggs - it was huge and stuffed with fillings. Potatoes were tasty too. Wife had corn beef hash that was also really good. Service was quick and attentive. Great place for breakfast. The desserts looked awesome but we were just too dang full!

Hofer's is a great breakfast and lunch spot in Helen, GA. They, primarily, have German and Belgian treats. Our group ordered Pastrami, Reuben or Rachel sandwiches. All were to die for, however I liked the Rachel the best and thought the cole slaw atop it was fantastic. As you enter, there is a giant bakery case and it is impossible to ignore the tempting cookies, cakes, and pastries available. I had a slice of German chocolate cake while others had fried apple fritters.

Day 8 - road trip - vacation food - Dessert! I wish we had eaten lunch here, but we stopped in and took a dessert for the road. I purchased a lovely German chocolate cake cup. It was fantastic! Lots of great choices!

We ate a late breakfast here, so we did not have to wait in line. We ordered the morning delight and the cold cut breakfast. Both were very good! Even though they were slammed, the staff was friendly and attentive. After breakfast, I bought a piece of German chocolate torte from the bakery. It was delicious! I saw a lot of reviewers complain about the wait, but it's a small, cosy place to eat. Personally, I prefer the smaller restaurants. They pay more attention to you, and your food. If you want fast service, go to a drive thru. This is homemade food, and worth the wait!!

"German baked goods". During our trip to Helen, GA we managed to end up here twice. The raspberry linzer bars were just mesmerizing and I knew I had to buy a square. After the first bite, they were heavenly... the right amount of crisp and chewiness. I even got a slice of black forest cake, which did not compare to the linzer bar. I was not going to leave this cutesy German town without a bag of German coffee, so we snagged a bag, too! The day before we left, we went back to the bakery and ordered another raspberry linzer bar. I have to say, the second taste of the bar was not as impressive as the first; this time, it tasted stale and was perhaps 2 days old. Unfortunately, I did not get the same thrill from it from the first bit of the initial linzer bar. Oh well... other than that, it's a lovely bakery with delicious baked goods and decent customer service. I was not sure how often they did their baking. I would have given them a 5-star, but the lack of freshness of the products from my second and final visit did them in! If we are ever back in Helen, I will be back because I simply love bakeries and trying new desserts.

Amazing restaurant. We come here On. Yearly basis and it just gets better and better. Lovely staff and amazing food. You can have a beer with your breakfast so this is the best place on earth.

I was expecting great things from this place due to the fact that they are a bakery. What I got was mediocre at best. To begin, I ordered the hot turkey on sourdough. I could not taste the bread cause of the saltiness of the turkey, cheese, and bacon. I did, however, like the German potato salad, and in fact much preferred It to the potato chips. My mom ordered the grilled chicken sandwich. The seasoning on it was great!! As for the bakery items, the cannoli was just ok. It wasn't worth getting it again. The black and white cookie was good, but nothing special.

My husband and I split the Bavarian cold cut breakfast, which was a good call. It was huge, and sharing it left us room for one of the amazing pastries. If you are looking for something a little different than your standard eggs and bacon restaurant, this is a good bet.

My wife and I ate breakfast here and were pleasantly surprised. It was our first European dining experience and turned out to be very good. Upon walking in you enter an environment that is compared to that of a German style bakery. This is the waiting area before you are seated to your table. The staff were all wearing Bavarian style clothing that added to the immersion. We were greeted and seated fairly quickly given the time of the morning which was great. The imported coffee was absolutely fantastic as well, if you're a coffee drinker be sure to try some. Nothing bad to say about this place. If you're looking for a casual, European-styled breakfast, this is the place to try.

This place fills up early on the weekends. It has a quaint interior and a outside patio on the street. Check out the bakery after breakfast and enjoy the coffee. And don't forget the market for German bread and bottled/canned specialties.

The cream puffs are all show! Yes they are huge, yes they are filled with a billowy white whipped cream bulging out the side and yes they are drizzled with chocolate. But eh, it was kinda like that feeling when you finally got with that hottie who ended up not so hot! Wah wah waaaaahhhh. sigh! Dont do the apple strudel either. It's a hoax. The thumbprint cookie, fantastic! I still love you Hofers!

Don't come on Sunday because it looks like a Wal-Mart on Saturday BUT DO COME! The bakery is brilliant and reminded me of Austria. The bread was fantastic, we bought some and took it back to the cabin and ate it like a pigeon. The lunch on Monday was great! The strong plates were flavorful and even the ham and cheese was good. The Mac and Cheese tasted like a kiss from Liam Hemsworth. Buy some sweets from the bakery like the almond cookies and even a Bavarian cream filled something and it'll make the ride back home much better so much that you'll forget the scary lederhose nwho took your order.

The strudel was magnificent. I had a hash with Canadian bacon and onions that was exquisite. To top it off we order the fried apple for the table and can I say it was delicious. Would do over if Helen. Service was friendly and prompt. Restaurant was clean and orderly. Great breakfast stop if you find yourself in Helen, Georgia.

We arrived around 10:40 on a Saturday AM and waited about 40 minutes for our table. The dining room is very small and the waiting area is actually between their deli and bakery counters, so we were constantly having to move or be bumped in to. We thought the service was actually very good once we were seated - but that could have been because they were trying to turn our table and get on with lunch (they start serving lunch 10 minutes after the last breakfast order is served). The Bacon/Onion Hash was okay - looked better on paper, however the farmer's breakfast with the pork chop was spot on. Really enjoyed the potatoes that came along as well. Didn't try any sweet treats as we didn't have any room left - but the crème puff seemed the way to go.

Food is great. Service leaves a lot to be desired. The wait staff is not pleasant and takes a long time to come back to check on you. The food still makes it worth stopping in.

A must-stop in Helen for German food and pastries. We got breakfast. The vegetarian hash was delicious. We got a basket of delightful breads and rolls. We got the bee hive cake and cream puff for dessert. They were great. For the road, we got rye bread, jelly doughnuts and hamentaschen. My favorite was their jelly doughnut-it was filled with ooey gooey jelly.

Can we give negative stars? This was some of the most horrible food I have ever tasted. Ever. I only tried items from their bakery side, and they were all so gross I threw them away.

Very disappointed. I traveled out of my way from N. Carolina to Florida to have glazed donuts at Hofer's Bakery that I remember from 3 years ago. They were the best I ever tasted and just melted in my mouth. They must have a new baker, who doesn't know how to make glazed donuts. The donuts I had last Monday were chewy, the worst donuts I've ever eaten. I won't be back.

Came to Helen to visit for our anniversary. Many restaurants were closed, but we found this one open. The hostess was very friendly and seated us promptly and took our drink order. It took some time before our server came to take our order. The service was ok, but I've had better. My ham and cheese on rye was fine and my husband liked his Reuben. However. I didn't care for the German potato salad or the spaitzel. Now, they may have been fine for someone else, but I didn't care for them. Another table got up and left because of some fish being bad or something. They didn't even eat the meal. I would recommend if your not sure about German food to stick with what you know and like.

Fantastic breakfast, even after waiting in line for a long time. Smoked pork chop is the best thing we had in town.

This place is so honey and the food is wonderful. We had the Farmer's Omelet and Belgian Waffle with blueberries and were very happy with our selection. The omelet was stuffed with fresh ingredients (diced tomatoes, onion and bell peppers) and I had them add CheddarJack cheese. It was light and delicious. The waffle was light and fluffy and absolutely delicious. The blueberry compote was the perfect topping, with lots of flavor but not super sweet. We will definitely be back on our next visit to this picturesque town.

This restaurant ruined our trip to Helen. It was a sunny day but we were not allowed to sit on the porch and was told only guests with dogs can sit there-first time heard things like that. Ordered the butchers platter for two. According to the menu it should be enough for two persons. However, the actual portion was pathetically small, with only one pork chop and two sausages. The food wasn't tasty at all, the pork chop was extremely salty and the meat loaf had a strange smell. Ordered the black forest cake as the dessert, it was as thin as a paper board and they charged that for 5 dollars. The same thing I ordered at cheesecake factory costs almost the same but the cake was at least three times larger. Not recommended-absolutely won't come back for our next trip to Helen.

We had the corned beef hash with eggs, and the veggie hash. DELICIOUS! We have been coming here for about 6 years and always eat breakfast or lunch here. Never been dissapointed.

  • Bill G.

Bacon and Onion Hash was good, not great. Service was very slow even at 10:00AM. Waitress was great and made up for the wait. Hash was mostly potatoes with just enough corned beef, bacon, and onion to make it acceptable. For a "German" restaurant the breakfast lacked German sausage, brats, German meat of any kind. Very, very disappointing! There must be better places in Helen?

Expensive!!!!! Pretty much what you would find at you local bakery! Much cheaper!!! Considering that it was Octoberfest time and a German theme, every day donuts & pastry was a disappointment. Priced at Around $4 for a cookie, here!!! We had 4 cookies and two small coffees for $20.00 ... The apple strudel with raisins and nuts was very good and the reason for the two stars! the plum pastry (just ok); the raspberry with crisscrossing dough on top(too sweet) ; the apricot triangle, dough was stale, coffee was ok. Will not return.

Got a breakfast sandwich - "Country Morning Sunrise Breakfast" which is scrambled eggs with thick-sliced ham on a croissant - and some strudel and fritters out of the case. For under $7, the sandwich was pretty big and filling with a couple really fluffy eggs. I couldn't finish! It was pretty tasty if a little plain. The bakery case was well stocked and everything looked really good. However, and the reason for only two stars after a decent breakfast, there were ants and a few fruit flies INSIDE the case. Not very sanitary and something that is easily taken care of. I'm not adverse to a few bugs so I got a fritter anyway but it's still pretty off-putting. A fritter and apple strudel came to just over $4. Take care of the infestation and maybe add a bit of cheese to the breakfast sandwich and you got yourself at least a few more stars.

We really enjoyed our breakfast. Huge portions and high quality ingredients. Coffee was delicious though I wish they would have a sugar container instead of packets. Sausage gravy and biscuits were the best we've had in years. Definitely coming back.

Apparently this is a bakery/deli/restaurant. I saw the Paulaner beer flag waving so we stopped for a round in part 2 of our spontaneous Helen Pub crawl. The girlfriend and I ordered a few Paulaner Oktoberfests and sat on the patio listening to a guy play guitar and sing soft rock type songs. Weather was perfect and the patio was nice. I saw people eating cupcakes, donuts, bratworst like hotdogs, pretzels and I even saw a family buy a loaf of bread and some deli salami and eat it right there. They only had 3 beers on tap and 1 was Miller Lite. Blah. Sorry for the terrible review but hey it is my experience.

At Hofer's for breakfast and really enjoyed it. I've reviewed other breakfast places around my home and this place stacks up well. I started with a great dish of homemade corned beef hash and over medium eggs with poppy seed rolls. Really great. Haven't had any hash in a while('hash n' eggs' we call it around here) , it really had great flavor. Also got biscuits and gravy. These actually have a little twist to them; they are made with German bratwurst gravy. My goodness, what a nice change of pace. Also, Melissa ordered the Hiker's Breakfast. It has two eggs, sausage, potatoes, and poppy seed rolls. Hofer's has gotten popular over the past year or so for breakfast. We were there at 8.45 on a Sunday morning and by the time we got our food, it was a twenty minute wait in line to be seated. Oh, the bakery.......see the pic of the cream puff. You'll get it.

I had hoped this would be a yummy place. The food was mediocre, got the waffle, fried apple, eggs and bacon. The apple was good. The waffle was not worth the $$...and when I asked for real maple syrup- not the little plastic sealed High Fructose Corn Syrup- I was told I could go into their gift shop and purchase some. Parking is tight in Helen- so there is a sign on the lot saying you will be towed if you're not a patron. While walking toward the front of the building several staff were seated outside the kitchen smoking...and watching who is parking, it felt. Our server was absent much of the time... had to ask the hostess for our check after a long wait for the waitress to return. While walking back out to the car we saw even more smoking staff in back- including our waitress! I also was put off by the strict timing of orders- my family arrived a few minutes before "lunch" time. We were able to order breakfast, another family who arrived a few minutes later were told it was "lunch time" and no breakfast foods would be available.... really? Thumbs down....

Good Reuben. Pretty good grilled chicken sandwich (it is marinated in a teriyaki glaze). Bad German chocolate torte - dry and flavorless. Pet friendly patio and free parking. It worked for a post-hike lunch. A little pricey but Helen is touristy.

On Saturday, we were looking to eat lunch somewhere in Helen with a group of 10 plus a dog. I called Hofer's ahead of time and asked if we could bring a dog. The lady I spoke with on the phone said yes, as long as we ate on the patio. This wasn't a problem for us, especially because the weather was nice. When our party of 10 plus dog arrived at Hofer's, we could not be seated because we were told our group was too big. The hostess suggested that we split into two groups of five: five people inside and five people outside. She also said that anyone sitting outside had to order to-go orders. After discussing with the group, we decided why not all 10 of us just sit on the patio and order to-go orders? I asked the hostess, who checked in the back with the manager/owner, and she said no. The hostess said only a maximum of five to-go orders was allowed. This left us scratching our heads, especially when the patio was spacious and completely empty, meaning there were more than enough tables and seats to cover our group. It made no sense. We decided to leave and dine elsewhere. We ended up across the street at The Meeting Place where the staff was very welcoming and hospitable. They even brought out water for our dog. Hofer's gave us a bad vibe.

Went to Helen for a girls weekend. We had breakfast here and took home some of the pastries for later. We went late Sunday morning around 11. There was a fairly long line but it moved pretty quickly, especially for how small the dining room is. The staff was super nice but must be used to regulars because they asked us for our order almost as soon as we sat down. My dining companions all had the Farmers Breakfast with the pork chop. They all said it was very good. I had the Mountain Climber's breakfast. The eggs were cooked just right (runny yellow, cooked white). The sausage was fine, sort of run of the mill. The potatoes were nice and crunchy which I really like. The roll was perfect to soak up the egg whites. Breakfast was good and efficient. Not really anything to rave about, but no complaints either. The place was super clean, even the decor was all dust free which is rare. To take with us we got the German Chocolate Torte, Sachel (I think) Torte and the Black Forest Torte. They were all very tasty and very worth it. Luckily there was four of us sharing them. Overall it was a good meal and even better pastries. The service was efficient and friendly so I give them 3.5 but rounded it up to a 4 because I swear I can still taste the tortes.

SERVICE IS SLOW. NOT REAL GERMAN FOOD. FOOD WAS OK. TYPICAL TOURIST PLACE. Stood in line for 20min. Plenty of tables but they told us it was because they were switching from breakfast to lunch and the grill has to set up. Unreal. Why can't they just seat people and tell them not to order breakfast. As we stood there, the 4 ladies in front of me and the family of 5 before them left. Don't they know that's business /money and reputation lost. It's like they say a customer with a bad experience tells the story 100 times and that's like losing 100 potential customers. FOOD - for lack of real German food on the menu in a town that bills itself as Bavarian, we specifically picked this place on account of their very German menu. Everywhere else in town seemed to serve burgers sandwiches wraps pizza. The food didn't taste or appear very German. Had the meat bratwurst platter and spatzle. We've been to Germany and grew up eating in very good rustic German restaurants. The bratwurst was bland and not very hot. The spatzle didn't resemble spatzle at all and doused in gravy??? The only good thing was the potato pancakes but then they gave us a tube of sour cream packet. Not very appealing visually. DISAPPOINTING!!! Avoid this tourist place. Maybe we'll just pick up the baked goods next time we're town. We'll try the Heidelberg restaurant next time see how they are.

We bought a variety of pastries which were all delicious. I would especially recommend the apple fritters, glazed doughnuts, and apricot and raspberry cookies folded over four times! The restaurant was very lively and seemed like fun but was too noisy for one of our group and so we went elsewhere for brunch.

I would have left a review if we stayed. First you are watched when you park in their to ensure you are eating there. Then we were greeted with, a "we will be right with you" as the waitress rushes by. After a couple minutes we discovered they stopped breakfast so we decided to go somewhere else. As we left we saw 3 employees outside smoking including the waitress that told us to wait, wait for what? For her to finish her Cigarette? I think not. Probably should have grabbed a danish at the to-go counter. Might try them next year hopefully new staff can seat us, then go for their cigarette

Impressive bakery. One of the best Reuben's I've ever had. However they won't let you customize your order and the restaurant is very cramped. You also cannot order good to go.

We had a delicious breakfast of Bacon and Onion Hash. All three of us ate every single bite. Coffee was delicious too. Loved the cozy atmosphere. I just wish the rolls were warm when served and the grits were a little runny. But would happily eat hear again!

2nd stop on pub walk. Beer of choice, Paulaner Oktoberfest. Actually made the live music of pop songs made into country bearable. Overall, great lil place for all ages.

The Ruben was really worthy. Their fresh baked bread is a certain PLUS. (Now this was my third Ruben for the week! Rated #2 of the 3) Zero atmosphere in dining room, but outside was an ooh-pah-pah duo that made the alternate indoor zero dining experience a welcome pleasure. Service was good at both areas.

Decent German food in a highly touristy area. Bf and I came here with his family and we all did sandwiches, since it was lunchtime. Some were typical American sandwiches, while some were European/specifically-German (notably the Wiener Schnitzel). Everyone enjoyed their sandwiches (especially the very good bread). We ordered the potato pancakes with apple sauce and spaetzle, to give these German sides a test-drive. The spaetzle was like another German restaurant I tried in Fort Lauderdale (which gives neither you nor I any indication to its authenticity), however, I would like to honorably mention the Kartoffelpuffer (said potato pancakes) and its deliciousness. We also shared 2 spices, one each of the Black Forrest and Amaretto. Wonderful European tortes that did not leave any of our teeth aching but did satisfy our desire for a sweet ending to our meal. I think this edges up my rating from 3 to 4 stars.... Go for the experience. I didn't get to sample more from their bakery section, since I was beyond full, but everything looked tantalizing.

We didn't eat lunch here, but bought a pretzel and some treats. I am from Germany, and have been craving a real pretzel for a while. These guys actually sell some real German baked goods, and they were good, so I highly recommend trying them. Also, check out their cold meat section, it brought back memories of my childhood (Gelbwurst, Nürnberger Bratwurst, Weisswurst etc.). Just one tip: "German" chocolate cake is not a German thing! It was invented by a guy called Mr. German and the name stuck to it. I guess it now is a marketing thing to link it to German food, but you will never ever find it in Germany.

Schnitzel was thin and greasy. Ambience in indoor dining lacking. Green beans tasted frozen, not fresh. Not as good as I was expecting. Would rather have gotten a sandwich at Betty's and gone on a picnic.

This is as good as it gets in Helen. We went multiple times during our visit. Has the best breakfast and friendly service. If I had to say anything bad it's because they do not serve bacon and they are not open for dinner.

We have stopped here several times and we were disappointed this time :( Reubens and Rachels had very little tough meat on them. Before they were piled high with thin tender corned beef. Wait was ridiculous because there were many tables open. The hostess had to bus and clean tables plus sit customers PLUS take time out to grab tableware from container one at a time. Needs a restaurant manager who can manage. Hire a busboy/girl. Wrap up tableware ahead of time. Time is money! The bakery is still wonderful. The smoking staff out back is a little off putting. :(

With a mixed bag of reviews on Yelp we were a little worried about our experience here but decided to go. Glad we did. Wait staff was good. Enjoyed the Jäger schnitzel with red cabbage and spatze well done. Good Warsteiner on top. Loved the dessert menu too but didn't have any room. NOTE we were a group of 6 which means automatic tip so make sure not to double tip.

i'm only giving 4 stars based on their apple strudel. it is delicious and the coffee is strong. i've wanted to eat breakfast here literally for years, but every trip up to helen, no matter if it's 6am or 6pm (well....i don't know if they're even open at 6am), it is like trying to get seated at Bianco's. we waited for 2 minutes this morning, the line didn't move, so i bought a gingerbread cookie and we went across the street to a place without such a long wait. obviously the place is awesome with so many people.

My parents and I wound up in Helen after a morning of driving through the mountains and decided that if you find yourself in a town with patrons in lederhosen, then you have no choice but to seek out a German restaurant. Hofer's had a man on the porch with an accordion in hand, so they were the obvious winners. I would be lying if I said we weren't a bit skeptical when we walked into the restaurant of Hofer's - it definitely could use a bit of a facelift - but when our food was delivered to our table, all of our worries were laid to rest. My parents went as authentic as possible and ordered Hungarian goulash and the German sausage sampler, which came with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and pretzel dumpling -- both entrees received rave reviews (seriously, that goulash was AWESOME. I can still smell its divine smell). I myself played it a little more safe and went with a french dip sandwich and it looked and tasted absolutely delicious (see photos for proof). As for the bakery, I really can't comment on anything other than the bread (which was fresh and yummy) since we didn't have room left, but their offerings definitely looked great. All in all, we had a great experience. Yes, the prices were a bit steep, but when you're in a tourist town, would you expect anything else? At least the quality was deserving of the price.

Great breakfast. My husband had the bacon & onion hash and I had the French Toast. His was better than mine, very flavorful and not too greasy. We came back a few times for pastries. The glazed doughnut and the cinnamon twist were out of this world. I thought the apple fritter was a little hard.

I ordered the Mountain Climber breakfast with biscuits and white sausage gravy on the side. The essence of the gravy complimented the rest of the meal with such an exquisite taste that danced upon my palate. This life changing breakfast left an explosion of flavor in my mouth that I'll never forget. Eat here, it's way better than huddle house.

Great bakery, not so great deli. We dropped by Hofer's this past weekend to get some deli meats to make sandwiches and a few treats from the bakery. The rolls we bought at Hofer's were stale and hard as a rock, the deli meats were about on par with grocery store brand deli meats, but the glazed chocolate covered doughnut and turtle brownie were great. While the treats were delicious, they did taste as if they were pre-packed and brought in; not like what you would expect from a true bakery. The service here was very friendly and willing to help, but it was a little slow. It may be that they were really busy that day, but it took way too long to get the deli meats cut that we ordered. But I will give them A for effort, friendliness, and the willingness to help.

One of the few places in Helen Georgia to get a hot breakfast. Sorry Meeting Place restaurant but your closed Tuesday and Wednesday. My wife and I both had the Mountain Climber breakfast. Very good. The lattes and coffee was good as well. The water tasted great probably cause it's mountain spring water. The place did not blow me away but it was good.

My best friend and I completed the Brasstown Bald Buster 5k walk (really, it was more like a crawl) and on the way back, we drove through Helen and spontaneously decided to stop by Hofer's. I've never had German food, but I've heard so much about spaetzle and schnitzel, so I was eager. Psss..I'd tell you the names of what we ordered if i could, but I'll describe. My best friend ordered the pork cutlet with mushroom sauce (Jagermeister something?). The mushroom gravy was very good. I ordered the marinated beef tenderloin which was in a sour kind of sauce, which was alright. Maybe I'm just not used to the taste. Each plate came with a side of red cabbage sauerkraut, which tasted ok between alternating bites of the beef entrees and spaetzle. As for the spaetzle, it wasn't everything i thought it would be. When I saw spaetzle made on TV (granted, it was Paula Deen), for some reason I expected a crunchy consistency, however it still tasted great with the meats. If I came back, I'd want want to try more the sausages. I'll leave this on a sweet note: the bakery. I'd bump this review to a 4 if I could because of the desserts. The bakery was the first thing we saw when we entered and I KNEW I had to come back after my lunch. I brought home 4 things: the bavarian cream donut, the chocolate puff, a piece of linzer torte, and a piece of apple streudel. What i LOVE about all these items is that they weren't too sweet. The donut didn't seem as fresh as I expected, but the cream inside was delicious, although more like a Boston cream pie filling. The chocolate puff had some fresh, soft whipped cream inside a puff pastry shell, drizzled with hardened chocolate. The linzer torte was a little bit tart, but I like it that way - not too sweet. The apple streudel wasn't too bad - definitely tasted the apple and I enjoyed the pecans in it. If you don't like nuts in your dessert, you might not like it. This place was busy on a Sunday afternoon, and service is a bit slow. However, if you're making time to visit Helen or don't have anywhere else to go, service is the right pace for you to sit and look around. I'm not sure if I'd really want to come back for the main entrees, but I'd definitely come back for more dessert.

Although we have eaten here three or four times ... my opinion of the restaurant keeps declining. Having lived in Germany, it was nice to get the pastries ... but the restaurant is abysmal. Very expensive. A breakfast of eggs, grits, milk, coffee and a biscuit was $18.00! For vegetarians, there are no substitutions for breakfast meats. Service was very slow, and the eggs were served with butter in them. It makes for fluffy eggs, but not appreciated by those who are intolerant to fats and oils. What ever happened to a customer getting their food prepared in the manner they like?

Went here for lunch while visiting Helen. The service was OK, but our waitress spent more time visiting with one of the local patrons, than waiting on here customers. Both my wife and I decided to try the Reuben sandwich. We both found them to be very tasty, but somewhat skimpy. You don't have to worry about getting full here. The prices are high, but that is true of every other place in town.

We were told to go straight to Hofer's and enjoy some authentic German food. My husband and I both love German food, but this seemed more generic than authentic German. Don't get me wrong - the food was fine, but it lacked a lot of the German flavors we were looking for and just didn't savor our craving. It just tasted "fine" - and with the price tag that went with the food, I just don't think it was worth it. I'm not sure I'd return to Hofer's unless it was to simply enjoy the fantastic staff that work there. They are sweet as can be and prompt with a refill! The German store inside the restaurant is really fantastic if you are looking for real German goods from across the ocean. The pretzels are also pretty fantastic!

Love Hofers! We go for their breakfast, which I find especially great since they have a traditional German meat & cheese plate. Very tasty & reminiscent of our trips to Austria. They also have a great deli selection of traditional German meats, cheeses, and breads. It's a must to stock up on sandwich fixings while you're there!

My husband and I stayed at a nearby Bed & Breakfast for our week-long vacation in Helen. We enjoyed the food at Hofer's so much that we abandoned are breakfasts at the B&B and began eating here instead. I had the Apfelkuechle (Batter dipped sliced apples, grilled and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and topped with whipped cream) and my husband had the Mountain Climber's Breakfast (Two Eggs (any style) with grits or roast potatoes, ham or sausage links, and rolls). The portions were plentiful and I LOVED the apples. The thing that absolutely sold me on this cafe was the hot chocolate. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I tend to have hot chocolate with my breakfast. I ordered it here expecting to get the usual packet of Swiss Miss. Instead, I got this amazingly thick drinking chocolate that was out of this world. It came with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles on top.

They only serve a full breakfast until 11 am... When someone asked them where else in town they could get breakfast they referred them to the Huddle House.. Really??? I went to the Meeting Place and Helen's Country Cafe which were both good and send customers to THIS establishment so I guess I was turned off by their lack of customer consideration. The waitress' seemed lackadaisical and put out... Won't be back

The breakfast apple dish is the cause of this review. I like raw apples. I like the skillet fried apples I make at home. I even like the ones at Cracker Barrel. These, however, YCK! They present well, but were cooked only long enough for the batter to solidify. The apple slices were raw. The other half had a Farmer Breakfast. Two stars came from his potatoes and onions. Mmmmmm. Seasoned well, and had onions - just the right amount for flavor only. The visit was a disappointment. We'll have to find another breakfast place in Helen.

I'm kind of mixed on this place. I had breakfast one morning and it was good but nothing out of this world. Service was good (they have to wear the traditional German outfits, bless them). The bakery was pretty good. The first time I got their suggestion of a Bavarian Creme Muffin and it was AWESOME. I don't really like cakes or muffins but this one was so moist and yummy! My friend got the apple fritter, which is another thing I wouldn't normally have ordered but I had a bite and boy it was yummy (and HUGE!).The next day I had the rum torte cake and while it wasn't bad, it wasn't particularly good either. It was just so-so. I'd definitely go back again for the bakery and they seemed to have a lot of German grocery items (and magazines!) for your shopping pleasure.

My family and I stopped by this past weekend. Oktoberfest was about to open up (on Sunday) so there was a good lunch crowd. Unfortunately, they all seemed to arrive at the same time, so my family and I waited in line for about half an hour before we were seated (we were so hungry, it seemed like longer). We essentially had to wait for a table to finish, pay the bill and then have the tables cleaned off and prepped for the next group. Since we had a good look at the menu while waiting in line, we ordered quickly and subsequently, got our food quickly. I got The Rachel, which is a corned beef sandwich on rye with Swiss, coleslaw and Thousand Island dressing. My family ordered the bratwurst on a bun, half a turkey sandwich on buttercrust with lentil soup and a grilled panini sandwich with roast beef, ham and salami, I think. Everyone was happy with their choices except my dad and his turkey sandwich. It was pretty plain looking, just some slices of turkey on a thick piece of bread with some pickles. To be fair, my dad had asked for no mayo but I guess that's all they put on it, because they served it plain. He ended up borrowing mustard from my brother's plate of bratwurst. Also, they ended up charging us $1 extra for the lentil soup. Not sure why and it was never explained nor was it brought up when my dad ordered. My brother commented that the bratwurst was smaller than expected. I noticed on the patio they had a food stand set up (not sure if this was part of Hofer's or not) but they charged $4.95 for knockwurst or bratwurst on a bun, and it seemed about the same size or bigger than my brother's, which was $7.95 and came with kettle chips. As for my sandwich, I thought it was pretty tasty. It was rather salty, but that was to be expected with the corned beef. I think they buttered the slices of bread before grilling it, because it was very greasy. It was delicious though. This was my second time at Hofer's. I don't go to Helen often, but I would stop by again to try the breakfast items if I'm in town. Forgot to mention: my mom did buy an apple cinnamon ring from the bakery (not sure if it was cake, coffee cake or bread, but it had a bread-like consistency). It was pretty delicious. I liked that the actual bread/cake part was not too sweet. Could have used some more apples, though. All their baked goods looked pretty scrumptious but the girls working there should really handle those baked goods with gloves next time.

Love this place. Went there for breakfast both days and we were told some menu items were new. First day my husband got the only traditional German breakfast item, the cold cut breakfast. Several German meats and rolls, he ate my eggs but would recommend you order them because it tops off that meal nicely. He didn't finish it and we took some home. I got the vegetable hash which is new and I was in love! The next day I got the bacon, onion hash and it was ok but no where near as awesome as the vegetable one. Both came with eggs. Second day he got the biscuits and bratwurst gravy. Not a breakfast sausage flavor obviously so don't expect that, but still good...he ate the whole thing. The coffee is amazing. I loved it. This time we did not get anything from the bakery, last time we did and it was ok. We did buy from their shop for stuff that I remember as a kid in Germany. That stuff was pretty high priced. Last year we had lunch, Gulash, Spatezle and bratwurst and it was all good. I HIGHLY recommend.

Props for the variety of German pastries and other goods they offer, yet the quality of their pastries leave more to be desired. The amaretto cake was bland with no amaretto flavor and the cookies didn't have the flavors they advertised to have. Nice try but not as good as you'd expect.

Had a great brunch here today, well breakfast actually. The 'trouble and strife' had the French toast which looked sensational (she didnt offer me any) and I had the Hofers Morning Delight (sounds almost sexy huh) That was ham on a large slice of fresh toasted bread with swiss cheese melted to perfection and scrambled eggs. I would've given a 5 except the eggs tasted like typical hotel eggs, pre-prepared. Coffee was really good too. Will go back to try some of the delish cakes on offer.

Considering this place has been here for this long I'm a little surprised it's not better. My boyfriends mother knew the original owners and he says it was better at one point. There were at least 5 people behind the counter when we first arrived yet not one of them turned around to greet us or the many others standing and waiting to be served. We decided to come back later. I really wanted the bee sting and plum cake. By the time we got back both we're gone. We decided to get a few slices of the plum cake that was still there and a few other treats. The plum cake was standard at best. I had to glop a lot of whip cream on it and still didn't care for it. We sat outside and had a beer before we left. Other than not being very cold it was fine. The atmosphere was nice.

This is a bakery in Helen, so you should be expecting pseudo-Bavarian treats at tourist prices. The meat counter looked well stocked, and the pastries looked great. I had a pretzel roll, and it was a round roll made with pretzel dough lightly sprinkled with salt. It was a pretzely toothsome chewy exterior and a fluffy interior. It was a great snack to take care of my peckishness. I got a Stollen and it was everything I could hope for in this fruitcakey cinnamon-raisin loaf. For a good, authentic fruitcake, this is a great place to find them. Unfortunately, I don't really crave Stollen. Their website says they have Springerlies, but I missed those while I was there. I will have to check again on my next trip through. I would upgrade this review to a four in a heartbeat if they did holiday Kringles.

I wept a little when I was told I could only order breakfast. I don't really care for breakfast and with good reason: Eggs, sausage, corned beef, and pancakes/waffles are great ways to get me to walk out of a morning meal. I figure people would prefer that over me puking all afternoon, right? Needless to say, the entire breakfast menu is riddled with everything that repels me. I wound up ordering only a side of grits, and it was the uncreamy sort where the ground up corn is still hard. Not a fan, sadly. The fruit my friends let me steal off their plates along with two rolls were quite good and fresh, but I still can't get over a place that would rather only get $3 out of me for mediocre grits instead of the $17 I was willing to hand over for a much better brunch. It seems that the better option here is to only visit the shop and get some pastries to go... unfortunately, that's yet another thing that repels me. So aside from the rolls, I'm kind of SOL here. Still, I can't really judge based on the fact that eggs = stomach cramps, so I'll simply base it on the fact that it seems like the hot place to go in Helen for breakfast but I get the feeling one could do better at home instead. Also, no bacon on the menu even though lunch items come with bacon. What the heck. I could've asked, but I was too distraught over the poor menu selection as it was to even dare tempt fate.

I ate here with the family for breakfast. I had the Bavarian Cold Cut breakfast. It was very good and something you just can't order anywhere. Everyone else got waffles and French toast. WAY OVERPRICED!!! $8 for 3 very thin potato pancakes!? $8 for the FARMER'S Omelette with barely any thing but overcooked eggs and a thimble full of onion and green pepper. Worst breakfast in years and the crowd is old and gross....and I'm old! Run Away!

I have eaten at many restaurants in Helen and so far this is my favorite. They have a selection of non-perishable German grocery items as well as a wide selection of fresh baked goods. I had a dinner of sauteed pork in a brown gravy with pretzel dumplings and it was delicious. The service was a bit slow, and as with all food in Helen it was a little over-priced, but I would definitely eat there again.

You can not find a better place for breakfast in the area. If you want authentic Deutsch or regular old pancakes Hofers has it.... Not to mention they have Jacobs Coffe, my personal favorite. My wife had breaded sliced apples with cinnamon and whip cream(5/5) She also had a single scrambled egg as a side, but it must have come from giant chickens, cause the side was huge. I had fried pork on top of a buttered bread/bun they make at the bakery(4/5) Coffe is served as cups or pots and refills are not free. The bakery and butcher are on your right and left as you walk in. On the right there are a wide assortment of meats and cheese. On the left as you walk in, is a glass show case with the best pasterys, cakes, and sweets. Ive never seen more variety of top nutch belly making sweets! There is a vault between the bakery area that holds a great deal of merchendise. Steins, magnets, magazines, jacobs coffe, etc. Behind the vault you can look into the bakery and see the workers preparing bread and pastreys for the day. This is 1 of 2 places in Helen that are open for breakfast. hours are 7a-3p. There are other local restraunts right outside the limit of Helen. Prost!

One of the only places open for Breakfast in Helen! Lots to choose from - but not many healthy options. The corned beef hash is all homemade and pretty good...a little on the greasy side - but great taste! The coffee was good and comes in a 2 cup kettle - that was a first for me. But, it was great!

I had the Mountain Climber it wasn't terrible but it wasn't great. From a pure cost perspective the price didn't meet the food level. My grits were grainy, eggs were meh and the sausage I could've done with out.

I had the pleasure of having breakfast & lunch there....breakfast was better than my lunch. I ordered the smoked salmon w/bagel..hmmm very good. I ate lunch here, not breakfast. Had the goulash, which wasn't anything special, but was good. Portion was small, but I was hungry from hiking. The pretzel dumpings neither taste like pretzels or dumpings, or taste good for that matter. The sausage platter was yummy, as it usually is when it comes to sausages. The bakery is the big draw here. My mouth watered just looking at the cases. The breakfast pastries lived up to the hype... had a muffin, raspberry torte, and bear claw. All delicious and sweet. The cakes were not as good as they looked. Had the black forest cake, but it was mostly whipped cream. Anyway, a typical Helen place where the charm is great and the food is average.

This is one of Helen's Bavarian restaurants with a small dining room. Upon entering there are a couple display cases--on the left are German-style pastries and cakes; on the right, deli meats and cheeses. We have tried several of their baked goods over the years. The breads and rolls are pretty good, but we felt that we have had better torts at other places. For example, the authentic Sachertorte had some hard pineapple filling rather than the traditional apricot jam; it was dry and disappointing. If you know what a good tort is or if you have baked them yourself at home, you may not like these. Toward the back is a large walk-in safe filled with German knick-knacks. The walls have shelves that hawk German products such as Gummi-Bären and Rittersport candybars that are hard to find elsewhere. If you come here during Helen's Oktoberfest celebration, expect a loooong wait to be seated, as the line sometimes goes out the front door. The dining room is attractively decorated with wooden beams and little ceramic objects on the walls in a lightsome style. You'll overhear customers speaking German with the busy staff who often speak some German, too. I've only ever been here for breakfast, and what I've had I've liked--Country Morning Sunrise breakfast of scrambled eggs and ham on a croissant, the Bavarian Cold Cuts Breakfast, and the Bagel and Lox. The coffee comes in little tin pots that go cold way too fast, and refills are not free. The food is good, but we mainly go there for the atmosphere. I think the waitstaff does a good job considering the sheer volume of peckish customers. Parking is in back in a TINY lot, if you're early enough or lucky; otherwise, you gotta hoof it across town. The spaces are so small you don't have room enough to change your mind, so leave your landyacht at home.

We ordered pretzel rolls from this place. They sent regular pretzels instead. We called and got the run around. No one would help us and told us the owner would call us right away. We called everyday and finally spoke with the owner. He told us they don't make mistakes, but offered to refund us if we ship the pretzels back UPS. We couldn't because they molded and we threw them out. We disputed with the credit card, and this owner told them we were liars. Don't do business with this outfit.

I had the roast beef sandwich on home baked rye and, unfortunately, the roast beef was bland. The sandwich didn't come with any lettuce or tomato on it so it was pretty dry. My dog really enjoyed my leftovers though. My husband had the Reuben and German potato salad. It brought back memories of his grandmother. He especially liked the potato salad and the sauerkraut.

This appears to be "THE" place to go for breakfast in Helen. Renea and I went on a Friday morning at 9. The dining room was full, but we didn't have a wait. After we were seated, a queue formed 15-20 deep. I had french toast made with freshly baked bread. Very good, but I would've appreciated some real syrup instead of the Smucker's syrup they served. Renea had the cold cut plate. She got a large plate of deli meat, a couple of brotchen and a couple of wedges of soft cheese. The bread and cheese were good, but not enough. The meat was thick and fatty. I don't know what she was thinking, since we did some heavy drinking the night before. When we've gotten similar plates in the past, the meat has been leaner and more thinly sliced. She didn't eat most of it, but I don't blame Hofer's. Coffee was diner-style. We spent $26.86. The next morning we went back at 9 and the line was 15-20 deep again, so we took away some dougnuts and an apple fritter. Pretty good stuff.
