We ate at two different Sonny's while in Florida and I've become a fan of Sweet Tea (if I can't have my diet Snapple). Their pulled pork and pulled chicken sandwiches on garlic toast were tasty and tender. (However, I wouldn't order their chicken wings again ... too messy). Thumbs up!

I was staying in Sarasota and we all were in the mood for BBQ. Sonny's was brought up and I said - Wee Ha! Just had some the other day in Venice and I could go for some right now. We got an order placed to go. It was ready when promised and smelled great. Upon opening the containers at the house we all were head over heels of the great aromas and the food looked fantastic. Plenty of sauces were provided also. The Brisket (my fav) was tender and had great smokey flavor and was lean (not like some places where it is half fat). The sliced pork was perfect. The ribs were amazing. The potato salad and cole slaw were great and even the garlic toast was delicious. I wish there was a Sonny's BBQ Chesapeake VA. I can't wait to return to a Sonny's BBQ again. (I had previously posted these images at the wrong business and deleted those) I've posted images of the great food we got from Sonny's

We must have picked nerdy day as all staff were dressed as nerds. Pretty funny! Food was good, but service was excellent which made food taste fantastic! Lori was our waitress and she was awesome. It's not often we go out and have out of this world service, but it is true. Ask for Lori when you visit & you will agree. New Red Neck egg rolls were yummy!

I'm proud to report that the rumors of Sonny's demise have been GREATLY exaggerated. The wife and I recently returned from a long weekend back home in the Daytona Beach Area. Not surprisingly, one morning a hangover debilitated my other half. Hunger drove me into Port Orange looking for succulent sliced pork on garlic toast. Folks, its every bit as good as I remember it, probably better. Below is the subsequent text conversation between our friend Karen and I. I've been teasing Karen with Sonny's for years now, this didn't help, I'm sure: Me: At Sonny's. By myself. God it smells awesome in here. Karen: Jealous! Me: (attaching picture) Karen: Good god! Yum! Me: Ate in 4 bites. Awesome. Me: really need one of these by us. Karen: no shit. Me: I don't think food has made me that happy in years. Karen: U r so funny. Me: racing home to shit now.

My boyfriend occasionally would bring home ribs or pulled pork for a late dinner and it always tasted okay. So another night when I did not feel like cooking we went to Sonny's. All you could eat deal for $13.99 was a pretty good deal but if your stomach is not big - skip on it - the plate holds enough food to make a body of 118lbs full. I had sliced smoked pork, Cole-slaw, garlic toast and as an appetizer - fried okra. Meat was smoky, juicy and not salty. I also did not taste any million times burned oil on my okra. Service was prompt, place was clean, and noise level for late night - pretty quiet. Definitely will be back another time.

We visit Sonny's each year when we vacation in Sarasota. We have been there about 5 times and will keep returning. The service is very good and the restaurant is clean and run efficiently. The salad bar is great with lots of fresh produce and many choices including a soup. The BBQ is great we usually order the baby back ribs or barbecue chix. Our family of 5 has always enjoyed our food. The sides are also delicious. Its a no frills family friendly restaurant that should satisfy your bbq cravings.

Amazing BBQ!! Was looking for a new place to eat since we have been visiting Sarasota for over a decade and so we decided to stop at Sonnys! They DID NOT disappoint!! Delicious fall off the bone all you can eat ribs and amazing sweet tea. The pulled pork was moist and delicious!! Ate here twice during our two week stay! Will be the first place we hit when we return to SRQ in 2014!!!

After trying Sonny's for the first time in Silver Springs, I was excited about the prospect of trying it again. So here I am in Sarasota and I found so many listings of Sonny's BBQ. After watching a movie today, we stopped by here for a quick dinner. We ordered the 10 piece Chicken Wings and their special for the day, 2 different types of meat (slice or pulled), 2 sides, garlic toast or corn bread for $8.99. We ordered the chicken wing with the sizzling sweet bbq sauce (good balance of sweet and spicy). The wings are still my favorite here. It's perfectly cooked to a crisp with the right amount of moisture and flavor. It's yummy. We also ordered pulled pork and sliced beef briskets, which were moist despite it's appearance. For our sides, we had baked beans and coleslaw. I like their baked beans. Prices were very good. Waiters and Hostess were pleasant and kind as always. Casual dining experience. It closes at 9:35 pm. I thought that was an unusual time to close.

We ate at Sonny's on a Thursday night, which featured All You Can Eat ribs for $11.99. Although normally this would rate at least a 3 on Yelp, the ribs were dry and not very good. If you have a choice, go to the BBQ place on Bahia Vista instead (Roadside Rib Shack).

  • Alan N.

Not good! 3rd rate salad bar and less than edible Ribs. The pulled pork was edible but kind of strange. It was more like Kahlua Pig than pulled pork - smokey and wet. Pass on this place.

  • Chris S.

Very, very good. Took a chance on "free" kids night. We will definitely return even after the grandkids go back to Indiana! Loved the smoked turkey and hubby said the pulled pork was very good. Price was right and Lori was our waitress... she was absolutely great - always checking on us and very friendly! Give them a try!

  • Brian G.

IMHO the meat is way too fatty and the BBQ sauce is terrible. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and an extra star because I know people who like the food and who eat here often. I've only had takeout when my friends have gotten it and after 3 bad meals can no longer eat their food.

  • Asia W.

Loved the salad bar, the beef brisket, the clam chowder and the sweet tea is just heavenly. the water tasted a little weird but it could have just been me being an l.a. chick. to be honest it smelled like diesel and tasted off but i don't think the guys there, many of whom walk around with grease, ketchup and mustard stains on their white tees and denim shorts, mind too much. all in all, wonderful southern hospitality, beautiful city, lovely people. a refreshing change from l.a.!

  • C K.

Food was fine. They shove you in and move you out. I dont think we were there more than 20 minutes. Our waitress was a little surly, but my dining partner has that effect on waitstaff sometimes, so maybe not her fault.

  • Sara H.

Yuck. I had that bad "uh oh, I think this is a chain and going to be such a huge disappointment" as soon as we walked in. Sadly, my premonition was correct. The salad bar was ok because it is lettuce. But the service was terrible, the food was tasteless and boring. This is the kind of place that gives you drink cups that hold a liter of soda and do all you can eat. When all you can eat less than what they gave you the first go round. So I suppose if you wanted a shit ton of food even if it was crappy then this place would be right up your ally. I had the pulled pork by the way and it was pretty much like cardboard shavings.

    (1)
  • Peter D.

The turkey is 3 stars, the sweet potato with cinnamon button is a 5 (it's a whole sweet potato really tender and their cinnamon butter is great), the garlic bread is a 2.5, the french fries a 2.5, the mac and cheese a 2.5, and the green beans a 1. Never had the pork.

    (3)
  • Bill P.

Had lunch at Sonny's on the South Trail. Today. The food was delicious and the service from Lia was friendly, efficient and prompt. Nothing to really complain about, EXCEPT: we ordered a take-out meal to go, ribs and two sides. When we got home, we discovered one of the two sides, cole slaw, was missing. It was too late and too far to go back. That fact that it was paid for was not as aggravating as the fact that it was looked forward to and was not there. It's this type of mistake that creates a negative desire to go back.

My family had a very mixed experience with various items we ordered from Sonnys BBQ. When we ordered for take out we clearly communicated that we had a party of 8 and asked for advice on the portions. Unfortunately, there was not enough food for everyone to eat. The people that received sandwiches really enjoyed their pulled beef and pulled pork. However, the french fries that accompanied them were atrocious reheated freezer spuds. The baby back ribs are comically small, but are flavorful. The dry rub STL ribs are very good as well. The dry rub chicken wings have good texture, though they the rub is a bit too salty. The sides were very disappointing; awful green beans, soggy mac cheese, pasty potatoes & under whelming corn bread. Turned out to be wonderful that the portions were off!

Had not been to Sonnys in some years. Very disappointing. Meats all looked great, all very tender but absolutely no smokey taste in any of them. So called garlic toast was pan fried bread with no garlic taste. Maybe they dumbed down their stuff to accommodate unknowing customers but they have lost me for good

  • Rodger B.

If you are a fan of ribs and other such, pulled pork and chicken, then this is a good place to satisfy a need or an itch. The ribs are well done but not dry and pretty much fall off the bone. Extra sauce, napkins, and wet wipes are already on the table. Portions are good size and I doubt you will leave hungry. There are a number of sides including cinnamon apples (OK), corn on the cob (mushy), coleslaw (average), and corn bread to name a few. You can add the salad bar to a meal for a few extra dollars but I doubt you will need it unless you like taking leftover ribs home. And I suggest you order the regular draft beer and not the large unless you have a wooden leg. Service is usually fast and courteous. This place attracts an eclectic clientele from guys in wife beaters, stained bermudas, and flip flops to families seeking an inexpensive night out with the kids and the neighbor's kids. If you want a good deal I can recommend the take out family feast. You get a generous amount of chicken, ribs, brisket, and pulled pork with three sides and four large drinks for about 40 bucks. While I like the food I suspect they use msg in the preparation as I usually get a reaction after indulging.

  • Daniel S.

You want good, basic, smokey Southern barbecue? This is the place. Sure it's a big old chain. But it got to be that way because it's damn good. The pork ribs are wonderful -- you certainly shouldn't eat anything worse or pay more than this. There's the smoke ring on the meat, a few different sauces, and tons of sides. Note that you can get all-you-can-eat specials most of the time, even when the table signage says they're not available. Yes, it will make you fat like many of the patrons. So? 3 Oct 2007 Update: People all told me this place has declined. I checked, and it's the SAME, and still good.
