Luke warm/cold food. Literally. Both courses and coffee (the coffee was the only thing I sent back). Waitress warned of an ultra-hot plate as she set it in front of me -- it was chilly. Food itself was flavorful. But all was without warmth.

The food was great. I had the rare tuna. Cooked perfectly and well presented. My wife had the red snapper and the portion was perfect. Center cut from a large snapper.

I have been to this place a couple of times and love to hit this place whenever I get back in town. The shrimp and crab bisque is a must along with the au gratin potatoes. I came here for a private dinner after I got married and my first anniversary. Was recently in town for business and took a lunch trip there to reminise, I was not disappointed. The service is top rate, the food is to die for, and while pricey you will not feel disappointed on the check compared to quality. I had the handmade ravioli where the pasta was perfect and the cream sauce did not leave me with a heavy feeling, it was not too light nor to heavy, it was perfect.

Living on past reputation. Not good anymore. Locals go there as much out of loyalty as because of the food.

Bijou Cafe is an amazing restaurant with a cozy feel, but also a sense of elegance. The food is absolutely out of this world. My mom brought me here for lunch on one of my trips back to my hometown of Sarasota. We both started with a bowl of lobster bisque, which was possibly the best bisque I have ever tasted in my life. I had some sort of ravioli, I believe it was a portobella mushroom type (don't quote me, it was a while ago), but whatever it was that I had was amazing. The deserts were delightful as well. I loved everything about this restaurant, and would not hesitate to come back for more of that divine lobster bisque!!

The food was mixed- delicious rack of lamb, dry, tasteless mashed potatoes. More distressingly the waiter was not particularly friendly; snotty in fact. He appeared to be in a hurry and didn't ask me if I would like a salad or side dish. There are too many wonderful restaurants in Sarasota to return here.

I saw someone else had reviewed this recently and realized I never gave my input. You should know this isn't necessarily a place for young people. The decor is old and boring, the seating is a little stuffy considering its claim as a romantic spot. Service is impeccable, as to be expected. The server even wiped away my bread crumbs with his special knife which kind of made me feel like a slob. The kicker of the night, which was valentines day, by the way. Was when in my hand-talking excitement I knocked the bottle of red wine all over my boyfriend. As if it has happened many times before, we had bus boys and servers over changing our linens so quickly you would've never known. Except for the fact that my boyfriend has his entire arm drenched in Pinot noir. Luckily, I am not easily embarrassed but I felt I had made everyone else embarrassed so we finished our dessert at the bar. The server was so nice about it of course. That's what the three stars are for. Not much for the decor or for the extreme lack of vegetarian options. Sarasota dining just can't seem to keep up with the times. The days of meat and potatoes are over! Since then I don't order red at restaurants anymore. :)

Went to lunch with my wife and daughters. My wife and i had the raw tuna c had the duck and o had the spicy shrimp. All very well presented and tasted great. Lunch for 4 ran $100 without wine or tips. So a bit pricy hence 4*.

We went to Bijou on a recommendation from my parents' friend and we were not disappointed! It was the last night of our honeymoon and we wanted something special - and we got it! The service was fantastic and the food was amazing (I got the Chicken Paillard, my husband got the Filet Mignon and we ordered a side of the special Pommes Gratin Dauphinoi, which were deliciously cheesy!). The waiter treated us to a complimentary dessert - complete with a huge candelabra! - in celebration of our honeymoon. My Riesling was crisp and delicious - exactly what I like! It was a bit noisier than we expected for a romantic restaurant, but we were still able to have a romantic dinner, as it wasn't THAT noisy. One of the better meals we've had!

Best French food in Sarasota, and a great wine list to boot, with lots of interesting, hard to find selections that are reasonably priced.

This is one of the very few unique, romantic and upscale places in Sarasota. Yes, there are a ton of places that dim their lights and charge 40 bucks for a piece of prime steak around here, but Bijou is a truly NICE place to eat. First of all, the location is great. The building is very attractive inside and out and the staff was exceedingly friendly. The food was, overall, very good. My wife and I had a few appetizers which were great. The cheese plate was good, but maybe a bit adventurous for a novice cheese eater. I know that sentence just made me sound like an asshole. The bottom line is that Bijou Cafe is fancy and nice and the food is great. Unilke the majority of "upscale" places around here, you can go to Bijou and have a truly refined experience. Also, MAKE RESERVATIONS.

Beautiful room. Lovely ambience. I really like the fact that the tables have a little distance between them so you have some privacy from the other diners. Definitely get a reservation if you're planning to dine early on an opera night. The food was all tasty. My main compaint - the portions were TOO BIG. I know, I know. That complaint does not compute for most Americans, but I hate to waste food (couldn't take leftovers with me since we were going to the opera) so I had to try to scarf as much of this MASSIVE portion of short ribs as possible. Ugh. Seriously, cut the portion in half and drop the price by one-third and I'd be a happy man. Our waitress (can't remember her name) was really friendly and professional. She made us feel welcome. I think this would be a really nice place for a romantic dinner later in the evening after the theater/opera crowds have cleared out.

I had wanted to visit Bijou Cafe for a long time. I decided that Easter Sunday would be a perfect occasion to do so. First of all, the interior of Bijou is muted and very comfortable. It is not casual dining and the quality of the service and cuisine deserves better than flip flops, t-shirts or shorts. The service was incredible. I have always compared wait staff service against the standards of The Capital Grill. The staff at Bijou put them to shame. Never once did we have to ask for anything! Every table was full and yet our waitress was attentive, accommodating and friendly, along with the support staff. I had the crab/lobster bisque. It was creamy and delicious. Unfortunately, they ran out of the mussels so my husband chose the tuna tartare. He's a big eater and although it was very good there wasn't as much as he would have liked. Maybe that's why they ran out of the mussels so quickly. One of the reasons I wanted to go to Bijou Cafe was to try the duck and it was wonderful. Crispy skin, moist meat and delicious stuffing. I couldn't decide which sauce to choose so Kathy, our waitress brought both. My husband chose the flounder which was on the special menu. It was perfectly cooked and delicious. Of course, he wished there was more of it. For dessert, we chose to share the banana croissant bread pudding with sauce. Kathy split it equally before bringing it to the table. IT WAS AMAZING. So, even though my husband could have eaten more of everything, he miraculously was totally full when we left the restaurant. The Bijou Cafe is a lovely place with delicious food and wonderful service. It's a great place to go for a special occasion or if you just want to taste quality food presented by caring and attentive servers.

Appreciate that Bijou is independently owned and they use high quality ingredients in their preparations. The atmosphere is inherently lovely, although it would benefit from a bit of updating. Service was fantastic but we were one of two tables seated on a slow off season evening. Given that the restaurant was empty I was surprised that my meal was not hot. I would recommend it to out of town diners, but I won't be rushing back myself.

I would give this 3 1/2 stars if they had it. Five of us had lunch during the week. Service as expected was attentive and first rate. The lunch menu was a pleasant surprise, with broad interesting choices. Dinner menu tends to be more traditional. Two pulled duck sandwiches were ordered. All seemed to be pleased with their choices. Some of the appetizers seem enough for a lunch. Good selection of wine by the glass. They have excellent wine tastings off season with a full compliment of tasty bites. Enough for dinner, or a preview for dinner at the bijou.

Abysmal. It wasn't busy at all but it took 5 minutes for a hostess to appear. Our waiter was STONED. And I mean really really stoned. Bloodshot eyes. Incoherent mumbling. Could barely walk. One of the few things he said that I could understand was that today was supposed to be his day off but they called him in. I ordered the mussels. They smelled terrible. Took a bite of one and it was clearly off. It took so long to arrive I didn't bother to send them back. Didn't want to wait an additional hour in this over-priced dump for something else that would probably be almost as bad.

The service is very good and atmosphere is nice however it gives off a feel of a dining room in a retirement home. I'd assume that the food is made for the demographic of thier clientel, highly uneventful. We had the salmon which was well put together however far from fresh and had burn marks from the grill that made the it taste like burned flesh. Also, had the duck which had a very strange gamie flavor unlike of a duck. This is the meal that the waitress highly recommended but I have to say I had better duck at Chinese restaurants. We ended up letting the waitress know that the dining experience was nice but the food was poor and she seemed to have dismissed it and the manager didn't even come to inquire about the experience. I have seen more concern in Applebee's. I would have expected alot more out of upscale French restaurant. Overall for a $115 dinner for two, it was extremely disappointing.

Bijou is one of Sarasota's hot spots. Because of it's location next to the Sarasota Opera House it has attracted an arts crowd for dinner. For lunch the room is filled with a "power lunch" crowed. It's fun to listen to tables talk about Sarasota gossip and business. The menu is good peppered with some creative flair. It changes by the season and right now there is a South African dish that is amazing. I just learned the owner is South African so it makes sense that he would have done the dish right. The drinks are always good pours and the staff is friendly.

My husband and I came here to celebrate his birthday. the only reason we chose this place was because my husband is South African and they have South African sausage on the menu. First of all, the dining room resembles a retirement home. It is dreadful. Our waitress was very friendly but also very clumsy, I actually started counting all of the things she dropped. They get a few stars for the great selection of South African wines , however, the food was disappointing. My husband enjoyed his sausage but it wasn't quite up to par with what we make at home. The worst part, however, was my meal. ! I would never expect to pay $80+ dollars for lunch and to be served packaged frozen vegetables -- but that is exactly what I got. I did like the lobster and crab bisque so one star for that. I probably wouldn't return.. Maybe for some wine..

Delicious and NOT-so-nutritious. So, definitely go here! I was in Sarasota for work -- my co-worker and I decided to try Bijou for dinner one night. We were not disappointed at all. I ordered the mushroom ravioli with goat cheese, and it was SO extremely good. While I love food, I generally cannot eat entire dinner portions in one sitting. Bijou was quite the exception. I ate my entire dinner and was so thrilled with it. To top it off, they brought out dessert pieces of flourless chocolate fudge. Also incredibly rich and delicious. I would love to try this place for lunch one day, followed by a long nap!

It's a bit old school but what better place to celebrate my Dad's 92nd birthday. The seafood bisque was extraordinary. Dad enjoyed the mixed grill with lamb chops, sausage and strip steak. I enjoyed a flounder (didn't seem like it was flounder...very thick cut) with horseradish and panko over vege risotta. Sad to report I didn't taste the saffron in the sauce but, overall it was quite nice. My sister couldn't decide on the Orange or cherry sauce for her crispy duck so the engaging server offered both. The server picked up that it was Dad's birthday so the cute candelabra arrived with dessert.

This horribly overrated restaurant does not follow through where it matters - on the food! The service was impeccable , the room was very pretty, but the amuse bouche was silly and boring. They were stingy on the bread, and it was not all that good. The cocktails are downright horrible. I wish I could have finished my Citrus Sundowner, but it tasted like cough medicine. Worst of all, it seemed like the chef had an outright hatred for vegetables. No seasoning on any of them. Beware anything without meat in it, because it will be boring and flavorless. But the duck was awful too! Cooked to death with a boring sauce. The only thing worse than a meal like this is having to pay way too much for it.

Nice place for a quiet dinner, date night. Valet parking. Staff friendly, attentive, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Shrimp and crab bisque get it. Entrees well prepared and vegetable selections were great match. Deserts are good not great. Very pleasant experience and certainly would recommend and will be back.

This is my first review, so I am unclear as to why I chose four stars and not five. The food here was incredible. I came with my daughter and my mother at around 7:30 on a Wednesday evening. We weren't starving, so we told the server we wanted to split a few things and she was very cheerful about it. The wine selection was outstanding and we found two great ones to enjoy. The crab/lobster bisque was good enough to lick out of the bowl. Yes. More. Please. We split the Mediterranean chicken which was naturally prepared--nothing overwrought--great flavor. For dessert we had the crime brûlée and my daughter had gelato. The meal ended with a fabulous cappuccino and chocolate ganache candy for my daughter. Would definitely go back. It isn't trendy in terms of decor, but you will not be disappointed. If you can, sit outside, the mosquitoes were too bad when we were there. :-(

Had a great meal with some friends last evening. The Moroccan salad is excellent. Linse had a terrific grouper on special. My rack of lamb was tasty but overdone. I am sure they would have taken it back, but I didn't complain and still enjoyed it. The service was hands-down the best service I have had anywhere in a long time. Our server was very attentive, on the ball, and helpful with recommendations that fit our personal tastes. He topped off wine and split up plates, paid attention to when we might be ready for something else and knew just when to approach the table. Even the valet attendant had our car ready before we even turned in the ticket. Excellent!

We have been for a girls lunch, and then with our husbands for dinner. The lunch was perfect in every way. The salad with lamb was perfect. The ambiance at lunch was beautiful with light shining in from all angles and a beautiful fountain off to the side. In the evening, it was subdued and sexy. We had a table for 6, and had a wonderful evening. Our service was good and the food was very good. Those potatoes are to die for - seriously. We ordered one for the table, and it was large, but I could have eaten the entire platter by myself! This place will be on our go to list when we are in Sarasota.

Excellent food, simply prepared and accompanied by knowledgeable service are generally the characteristics of a great restaurant. Bijou delivered on all these variables. I am absolutely obsessed with their shrimp and crab bisque. It's thick and creamy with the perfect amount of sherry and cognac and a decent amount of crab. I thought Tommy Bahama had the best bisque till I tasted this one. I would give this place five stars on its bisque alone, but alas there's much more on the menu that factors into it. This is a senior's dream restaurant. It's quiet, old style fancy, bland food and staff is patient and pleasantly servile. It's reminiscent of an old banquet hall at a country club or perhaps the dining room on the Titanic. The food is beautifully presented and "safe"; it seems to cater to a crowd with an unadventurous palette for flavors by not being too exotic or strong in taste. My husband had the pepper steak, which was peppery and cooked well. The sauce was just bland. I had the chicken paillard, which was heavy with butter but nothing more. I've had brown butter sauce with rich flavor that I would drink it if it weren't so bad for you. (Anyone in DC must try the best chicken paillard at Carlyle!) The amuse bouche tasted like fruity cream cheese and the truffle treat at the end had a stronger refrigerator flavor than chocolate. The winning attributes of this restaurant besides the bisque is the service and outdoor tables. Everyone from the hosts to the servers were over-the-top helpful and pleasant. The restaurant also has a charming outdoor area to dine where you don't see much of the traffic going to Main. I noticed a large flat screen at the bar where it could be nice to enjoy the delicious pear martini and I must say the restrooms were sparkling.

These 5 stars are for the gracious service, the tasty cocktails, and especially for the best duck I've ever had, ever. Succulent, boneless, meaty breast and thigh with a nice crispy skin. It's served with a savory Michigan sour cherry reduction sauce to swirl onto every bite. My husband had the steak, which he found to be overpowered by a crust of black pepper. Duck lovers, this is your place.

Took a bite of one and it was clearly off. It took so long to arrive I didn't bother to send them back. Didn't want to wait an additional hour in this over-priced dump for something else that would probably be almost as bad.
