Just terrible . 35 min wait for dried out hard ribs and chicken. Flavorless Mac n cheese. Stay in Gainesville for Sonnys, you're better off.

This place has always blown my mind with BBQ. Every time I come for a horse show me and my dad come here, it's a tradition! Their BBQ is so delicious I don't even have to out sauce on it. What they have now is fine to me (: now if you haven't been here and your an onion ring fan this is your place! They have a half foot and foot long. It's basically put on a onion ring holder and based on height. The onion rings are the best I ever had in my life! The place doesn't look like much on the outside but once your inside you can't miss the awesome subtle decor and the very nice bar. Staffs pretty attentive and the tea is to die for ! They have so many side options and appetizers it's always hard to choose what to get. But they always bring full force with their BBQ and I love em for it! I always look forward to horse shows to come here after! I wish they would make the bathrooms alittle bigger though. But all in all this place has me hooked. It's my one stop shop for BBQ when I'm around Gainesville ! Come here for some darn good food and you'll leave happy and with that one button on your britches unhooked haha.

Average place with average food. My biggest issue is that they don't offer their pulled pork or very many of the other meats served without being slathered in sauce. That doesn't bode well for someone who wants the BBQ dry due to dietary restrictions.

Sofa King Good!!! I imagine that Newberrian's don't know what to do with a Bubba's BBQ close by and Newberry's Backyard BBQ right on there main street. I liked it, liked it, liked it, The ribs were outstanding and the service was great. We had the feast for four and the four of us left full, very full. The sliced beef was something legendary and the pulled pork, although my least favorite, was good! Service was very friendly and fast!

To put my rating into perspective: there is no shortage of BBQ in the area, ESPECIALLY Gainesville. With that being said, Backyard does a decent job of delivering a pretty solid value BBQ at an...acceptable price. The Space One of a handful of places located in the town of Newberry, Backyard BBQ has ample seating for such a small town as well as a full-service bar for anyone seeking a nighttime refuge (YES they have liquor, drafts, and bottles). The entirety of the restaurant was clean, right down to the restrooms which sport a sanitary "coating" rated to keep the area sterile for months (curious to me as well, but they have a nifty certificate hung on the wall to inform you of the details). The Service When my friend and I arrived we, unfortunately, succeeded multiple groups of little league baseball teams who must have just recently completed some event. In other words: they were PACKED. Even lacking all faith in their ability to serve us quickly, we were seated in less than 10 minutes. Overall I felt somewhat satisfactorily attended to, but I really cannot stress how packed they were (all of the tables I could see were filled with eager diners). Could I have used one more refill and could my order have been placed a little more promptly? Yes to both. Again, unusual circumstances for ANY establishment. Regardless, the servers kept a great attitude and were able to serve up enough personalized small talk to keep things quaint. The Goods Before diving in, the BBQ sauces were average. I love BBQ and I always test sauces before adding them to my meat. There were 3 offerings on the table, none of which surpassed average. Enough was ordered to break it down and rate it: -Onion Rings appetizer(A): By far the best onion rings I have had and OBVIOUSLY made fresh, including homemade honey mustard AND Ranch dressing for dips (as well as their bleu cheese, though this was a mix-up due to the hectic level of busy-ness) -Baked beans (B): Solid and sweet with enough meat to insure satisfaction -Cole slaw (C+): I'm not a huge cole slaw enthusiast but I like it and have definitely had better -Fried okra (C): Not fresh (aka tasted frozen) and not worth anything -Baked sweet potato (B): Did not try, personally, but my companion stated it was solid and they have cinnamon butter to accompany it -Short ribs (B+): The hype was underwhelming in comparison to what I tasted, but they were served fresh. The sauce was undermined them in my opinion. 4 Ribs in total. -Beef brisket: (C+): Served with flavor and not dry, the brisket still appeared grey and was overly fatty for the typical brisket serving. Also lunch portion was meager. PRO TIP: To-go cups are 32oz if you need to justify the cost of getting a soda/tea Final Thoughts Onion rings are a MUST if you like such a thing. The dressings were notable, the rings delicious and plentiful even with only the 6" serving. Portions for the main course are par at best for the price (recognizing myself and my friend both got lunch portions) but the area leaves no competition for adjusting this. Large to-go cups for beverage are a huge gain for me, though. Despite how busy they were, I suspect service is typically on-point, and the staff continued to be friendly despite being swamped while I was their. I gave more time than I should have to Backyard BBQ before leaning towards this 4-star rating, but circumstantially they absolutely they are worth a visit if passing through.

I may be a newbie to downtown Newberry (pronounced New-barrr), but I was only able to find street parking for this establishment. And, the parking and restaurant filled up really fast. Luckily, we arrived around 11:30am for lunch. The interior is very clean and not very noisy. There appears to be an expansion with extra dining room on the side, and the back room almost looks like a banquet hall. Our waitress was really sweet and able to give us suggestions on the best items to order- she suggested the ribs. But, she also suggested that since it was our first time dining there that we should try the Feast for Two for $26.99, which had almost everything. We were a party of three people, but it was way more than enough food. The beans and coleslaw are AUCE when the meal that we ordered. It was great to try everything, so I definitely know what I am going to order next time. Coleslaw- delicious, but I could live without the celery salt Beans- to-die-for with chunks of meat and a tasty sauce Garlic Toast- way too much margarine for my liking, but I ate it anyways Sliced Beef- tender and juicy (compared to most places, exemplary) Sliced Pork- same as the beef, sliced very thin Chicken- tender, fat melted off into the meat, low and slow cooked, with a sweet and smokey skin Ribs- pork spare ribs, amazingly sweet and tender Corn-on-the-cob- decent, but margarine flavor We also ordered an appetizer of the fried green tomatoes, that come with ranch dressing. The tomatoes were sliced thin and had too much cornmeal batter on them, you could barely taste the tomato inside. We had sweet potato fries as well, they were decent, kind of mushy. The banana pudding was ice cold and excellent, they did not skimp on the ingredients. The sauces here...OMG. I adore the vinegar/mustard sauce- excellent thick consistency and just the right amount of sweetness. We purchased some to take home. The smokey sauce is also perfect, and the hot is similar without too much raw dry pepper flavor. Sometimes the hot sauces just taste like a spice jar. Keep in mind that they use margarine here instead of butter, and I do not blame them? It now costs almost $4 for 4 sticks of butter these days. The sweet tea was on point and served in a logo cup that you can take come to remind you to return soon. Next time I return, I am just going to order a spare rib platter. Overall, one of the best BBQ experiences I have had yet.

I heard a lot about this place but frankly have not idea why anyone would think it something special unless it is just because of the fact that it is the only barbecue around; hence no yardstick of comparison. The baby back ribs were good but nothing really exceptional. What was exceptional was the lousy right out of the can apple sauce apple sauce and some of the worst, most greasy fried green tomatoes I've ever come across anywhere; just take a look at my picture of them....pathetic. Those, then couple with a sauce for them that has to have either been from a jar labeled for salad dressing or the world's worst attempt at remoulade. The inside is clean, cozy and though your waitress isn't aloud to take your money or give you any change, attentive and helpful enough. For the BBQ I'd give the place an OK, three stars, but considering the sides, I can't. Any decent barbecue place at least has some ok sides to go with your meal and Newberry Backyard doesn't.

Tried this place out at 2pm on a Saturday. Meant to inquire about their breakfast menu that they just added, but I was with a crowd and quickly got lost in conversation. I'd heard parking was tricky, but I just pulled to the side of the road once I saw the building and parked along the street. The person I brought took the Kenny Rogers chair. Six of us ordered the Feast for Four. It came with ribs, corn on the half-cob, slices of beef, slices of pork, and maybe a rack, rack and a half of ribs. A few slices of garlic bread, and limitless refills of cole slaw and baked beans. Simply put, the best beans I've had at a restaurant, bbq joint or otherwise. I think it was the sauce. I've had meatier, porkier beans at other bbq places, so it must have been their 'bold' sauce that was added in. The Feast feed all six of us, with enough leftovers for a seventh. We did also get cornball things and the onion rings, so that may have filled us up a bit. The ribs were delish, just right. The sauces were good too - one sweet, one 'bold', and one yellowish Carolinaish mustard sauce. Which I immediately fell in love with. I would have a really hard time placing an order of my top 5 BBQ joints in the area. Like another Yelper said recently, hard to review BBQ places since some seem so inconsistent. I need to try Pearl's Country Store before I make that call. But Newberry BBQ is somewhere I will be going back to again, without doubt. The tea was great too. Really the only thing I had that I didn't care for was the mac and cheese. It was just kinda... there. A bit tasteless. My only disappointment though. They have a full bar, and I intend to return July 1st to see a friend's band play. I'll be the guy at the bar whose face is covered in their yellow sauce, looking around for the waitress to bring me another plate. A+++ WOULD CHOW AGAIN

One of the best BBQ Joints in the Gainesville region! It's a little far out from the Main Gainesville area, but the food is fantastic and definitely worth a visit. It's located in the tiny town of Newberry and when I went for lunch there was plenty of parking (on the streets). The place was filled but not packed. When you walk in, you can see how nice of an establishment it is. The hostess sat us in the extra dining room (which also has a bar and several TV's) The service was super friendly and the waitresses were great (good-looking too) The menu was pretty standard. They have all the bbq fixins: Pulled Pork, spare ribs, bbq chicken ,etc. They had some interesting items like fried ravioli, fried green tomatoes, and a foot of onion rings (they stack the onion rings on a vertical stick). I stuck to barbecue. I knew I had to try some combination of something. I got the spare ribs and sliced beef combo. My brother got the spare ribs and turkey combo. I got mine with a side of baked beans and fries. The spare ribs were amazing. They came right off the bone and had fantastic flavor. The ribs were juicy but not oily or greasy at all. The sliced beef was great, but lacked a little flavor so it needs bbq sauce. The turkey was real tender and had great flavor. The skin was the real winner of the turkey as it was crispy and the sauce never made it soggy. The baked beans were good. They were sweet and had little chunks of pulled pork in them. The combo platters come with 2 sides and garlic bread and were about $10-$15 per combo. This place is definitely one of the best bbq places in the area. The drive is kind of far out, but it is kinda nice. The service was great and the prices are great for the portions. You will definitely leave feeling full (you may also need a box).

Having enjoyed a dinner here about two years ago, we returned to see how the food fare at the Newberry's Backyard Bar BQ held up to other local favorites. Sadly, it did not...here is why. The Newberry "downtown" has a special charm and the NBBBQ fits right in. There was good live music on this Thursday with a sparse local crowd. Even though the restaurant was only about half-full, it took our waiter about 10 minutes to find us. After that, service moved quickly. There are a number of non-BBQ items on the menu, but we were fixed on the meat, ordering a BBQ beef dinner and a half-slab of BBQ spare ribs. The food arrived quickly. The spare ribs are about 6" long with a healthy layer of lean, pink meat. While not fall-of-the-bone tender, the meat was pleasantly chewy. The flavors, however, were dominated by the sauce and the smokiness was lost. The garlic bread was a poor match to the meat, clashing with the sauce and overpowering the meat. If the ribs were okay, the beef was a disappointment. What you get are around 8 thin slices of beef, each around 5" in diameter. The meat is gray, dry and devoid of anything that resembles smoke. How this could appeal to anyone was a mystery. Of the four selected side dishes - potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans and macaroni/cheese - the baked beans were memorable in a good way. I used the baked beans like a sauce to rescue the beef. If you live in Gainesville and are in the mood for BBQ, head to Micanopy, instead, and the Pearl Country Store. On the other hand, Newberry's Backyard Bar BQ has a strong local following and is well-reviewed on this and similar sites; maybe you will feel the same.

Yo, I have NO idea what the hell happened here. My friends and I used to all agree that this was the go-to place for ribs in the Alachua County area, and while I went to school at UF we made frequent trips here. This place has fallen off for reasons that I do not know. We all ordered the ribs this past weekend after graduation and the ribs were cold, hard, and the only taste came from the sauce. The sides and the sauce are all still good, and the service was fine, but the ribs used to be the main attraction. I'm so disappointed. I'm talking listening to Jay-Z's new album level of disappointment. This place used to be 5-star worthy, and now it's getting a pity 3-stars.

5 stars for a combination of the food, the service and a nice drive out to Newberry. All the BBQ is very juicy without being greasy. The baked beans are some of the best I have ever had and the mac and cheese with bacon in it is awesome. I am also a big fan of their mustard sauce. They also have a stand alone bar where you can drink and eat, a Karaoke night, and any place that has a picture of Bill Murray in Caddyshack on the wall is alright with me!

Best BBQ I've had in a long time! We tried a bunch of everything because we were seeing if we wanted to use them to cater our wedding and nothing was disappointing! I especially loved the ribs! We are definitely using them for our catering and will be back. :)

I have had varying experiences here. My last one was great, the one before that less so. If it improves on my next visit then it will be doing very well. Onion rings are awesome and a generous portion, thick cut and delicious. Barbeque this time was good, not perfect but a good thin sliced pork, not too fatty. Sauces were good and sides were good. Only gripe is prices are generally a bit higher than other BBQ. Worth a stop if you are in Newberry. I hope it continues to improve and I will be sure to re-rate.

Never got our appetizers but my beans and slaw, included with my meal, came 5 minutes BEFORE my meal arrived. When the food did arrive it was barely room temperature. Pork chop was about the same temp and very dry Wait staff was more concerned with socializing at the bar than taking care of customers. Upon paying, begrudgingly, we were asked how our meal was but when we told the cashier about our experience she tried to justify both the poor service and food. Not sure I will be back.

Almost everytime I go out to Gainesville and mention to someone that I live in Newberry, the usual response is something like "Oh, Newberry? Have you been to Backyard Bar B Q? Their food sure is killer!!!!" I've been here for like two months and have somehow managed to avoid going here. But today I was craving some good BBQ so I finally decided to stop by for lunch. I had sliced pork with a baked potato and macaroni & cheese, and all of it was pretty good. It reminded me of the food at a typical Sonny's BBQ chain restaurant (which happened to be founded in Gainesville... how funny), except the meat was not as fatty and was higher quality. The atmosphere was homely and cozy, which was nice. The waiter seemed a bit aloof and wasn't very attentive though, but the rest of the staff seemed friendly. Perhaps he was having an off day? Overall I had a good meal, but it wasn't anything mind blowing. Is it worthy of the hype or the drive all the way from Gainesville? I really don't think so. If you're a Newberry local and live close by then it's not a bad place to grab lunch or dinner, however if you are indeed a local then you should already know this.

My boyfriend and I ate here tonight as we desired BBQ and I'd heard good about Backyard Bar B Q on Yelp and elsewhere. Certainly better than Sonny's or Woody's, though that's not a difficult feat to accomplish at all. The atmosphere is nice enough and it seemed busy for a Tuesday night. Service was prompt and friendly and the food didn't take very long to appear from the kitchen. The BBQ--we both ordered pork, with my boyfriend getting sliced pork whereas I got pulled pork--was about the best I've had in Gainesville but not as good as Wall's BBQ up in Savannah or a few other place's I've sampled BBQ in Georgia. The sides however, were the only bone I have to pick with Backyard: you get two sides with your dinner, and the options are limited to a baked tater, sweet potato fries, fried okra, baked beans, coleslaw and applesauce. Wall's and other places I've been has a wider spread of sides and I would like to see things like turnip greens and other old-timey southern foods out here, too. Somehow, Backyard while good enough still lacks that real old-timey country feeling and feels slightly too much like a Sonny's in some aspects. When I think of BBQ, I think of the sort you'd get at a Sunday dinner-on-the-grounds at a Baptist church and I expect any place called "Backyard" to espouse a diversity of sides and get away from the banality of Sonny's and Woody's. They do appear to have a bar here, which is a plus and not common to BBQ joints, really. I am glad we have Backyard in the area, and Newberry is a charming place to visit. I would also say that Adkin's BBQ in Bell is probably worth visiting although I've not ventured out there yet myself (actually a friend and I tried to eat lunch there one Sunday but, being Sunday, they were closed). Adkin's I do hear tell though is the best in our region.

My mother works out in newberry so she eats there often. Today I went and ate lunch with her at 1pm. The place was empty and we were seated immediately. The waitress came to our table in short of a minute. **** for a kind of side note, the girls all seemed to be about 5' tall and very skinny and for some reason they were wearing the shorts, stockings and socks kinda like hooters. i don't know what that's about. **** The place has a really clean inside and comfortable chairs and tables. It is pretty open inside, there aren't tons of tables and chairs jammed in there. There is a full bar with TVs tuned into sports channels. the food came quick and hot. I had a grilled chicken salad and my mother ordered the BBQ chicken with sweet potato I enjoyed my salad, the chicken was very tasty... I'm not complaining but it was just a house salad with a grilled chicken breast thrown on top of it, but like i said it tasted good. Moms food was good too. We were in and out in a matter of about 40 minutes. bottom line-- Its not the best, but its still pretty good. I am looking forward to the next time I can eat there with mom. It was inexpensive and a nice alternative to other BBQ places in gainesville... It was fast and the server was speedy and efficient. ********** a neat little fun fact is if you go on your birthday (must provide id with bd on it) your meal is free**************

Used to be a favorite but the quality has really declined lately. My wife and I have experienced poor service, dried out meat, and side dishes that tasted like they were cooked days ago on our last few visits. Probably ok for a decent lunch if you find yourself in Newberry, but no longer worth the drive from Gainesville in my opinion.

Solid choice if you're in Gatorland. Yes, there is a drive involved...but it's worth it. If you're excited to get a non-chain restaurant that specializes in one thing - BBQ. Get over there to Newberry. The BBQ was very good without being greasy. Like any real BBQ place they let you decide how much sauce you'd like to put on your food. I believe they have a spicy and mustard based and a normal BBQ sauce. Of course they have great sweet tea and have plenty of free parking.

Very tasty food. Pulled pork sandwich on ciabatta bread was a touch down. I mixed all the sauces together and it was perfect. The service was decent, the girl was sweet but slow with the refills. I would definitely go back!

Just got back from Backyard BBQ and I have to say I don't really understand what all the fuss is about. My baby back ribs were pretty good but the 'pulled' pork was, first off, more like chopped, but smothered in sauce which really obliterates any pork flavor. And the sauce wasn't even that great. It had a funny taste to it. Honestly, it tasted just like the pre-made-and-who-knows-how-many-miles-this-traveled pulled I can find at Publix. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, not to say the experience was horrible, but it just wasn't that special overall. All the sauces on the table were pretty good, except neither of my meats needed any since they were already covered in sauce. The corn on the cob was margarine-y, the baked potato was a baked potato (can't mess that up, right?), and our waiter admitted to us that the applesauce is just store bought. Why do you serve Mott's anyways? My fiance asked what sides were fresh and homemade. The waiter said only the broccoli. And they steam it and put garlic butter on it. Thats the only side item you guys have fresh? The service was very friendly however. Everyone had that whole southern charm thing going on and the drive out to Newberry from Gainesville at sunset was truly beautiful. So if you're thinking about going to Newberry's Backyard BBQ I would say it's a nice drive, the food is not the greatest, but definitely don't get the pulled pork.

One of the best bbq restaurants in the Newberry/Gainesville area. They have a wide selection of food to fit any taste. They recently closed their take-out location but now have started a curb-side pickup at the main location. It's a nice feature.

OUTSTANDING. The ribs are the best and I love the sauce. There are many but my favorite is a little vinegar like. I recommend you get the baked beans. Wow. Kinda sweet but I'm from the south and that's how we do it. Great stuff. Street parking and a real hot spot with locals so get there early.

Breakfast Buffet... not a good idea for a barbecue restaurant! Lifeless and boring to say the least, I grabbed a small scoop of the reasonable scrambled eggs and two slices of bacon, the rest looked unappealing and straight from the factory! $8.99 for that and a glass of water, I won't go back. I asked the waitress if I could pay less since I only had the two items, she checked with management, they said NO. Oh well, I'll return for the barbecue, but not the Saturday breakfast buffet!

pretty good bbq, but i would hesitate to call it spectacular. i always get the pulled pork lunch or dinner plate and it is always good. wayyyyyyy better than sonny's, that's for sure. their coleslaw, however, is FABULOUS. i could bathe in it is so delicious. my friends and i usually go on thursday nights for trivia which is always fun. the questions are generally geared towards the older generation, but the guy who runs it is very nice and tries to help us out. but beware: some of those people are incredibly loud and annoy us, so if you're not into trivia, i'd avoid thursday nights. the servers are usually pretty good. always friendly but not always the quickest. oh and while you're there, don't forget to order the banana pudding for dessert. maybe its just because i love banana pudding, but it is great and the perfect end to a bbq dinner.

This place ROCKS!!!! I go everytime I cine down to visit my mom! GREAT food! Even a healthy eater like me can enjoy their BBQ chicken dinner (no BBQ sauce) and broccoli (no butter). Although... If you aren't figure conscious, you've GOTTA try their onion rings!!! Comes vertical on a dowel! Cool presentation! Thus place is always packed. But well worth the wait if you must (rare).

The best barbecue you can get in this neck of the woods. A decent drive through the emptiness of Alachua county leads you to small-town quaintness. The restaurant sitsi on an intersection where traffic isn't directed by a sign or a light but a crossing guard. With this feeling of small-town coziness the atmosphere at a BBQ place is sure to match it. The baby back ribs are succulently good. The corn nuggets are sweet and tasty and the onion rings are awesome - you can order them by how high they stack them on the plate (I've seen people order a foot stack). It takes a while to drive there and the wait can be long, but it is all worth it!!

Real good place to take family out to eat. Friendly staff. Only negative is that it is a Bar-B-Que named restaurant and it is not one of the better food there. I would give the Bar-B-Que a 3 star rating, but still a very good place to eat.

Love the Backyard BBQ! The food is not greasy, like most of the other BBQ places. It's perfectly smoked and I love the sliced pork. The baked beans are awesome and they have really good cole slaw too!

Ahhhh.....a relaxing drive over to Newberry...for the BEST BBQ!!!!! I absolutely LOVE all of the food here. The BBQ chicken and ribs are the best. The chicken is moist and flavorful, not like you get at those chain bbq joints. And the ribs are meaty and just juicy! Also they have fresh onion rings, you can order 1/2 foot or a foot (they come with ranch and honey mustard for yummy dipping). Finally I think they have the best baked beans and cole slaw, I'm not sure what they do to them but they are soo good. Basically if you are looking to watch your calories then don't go here, everything is just so good you will be licking your plate. Make sure that you check out their daily specials.

My one note of advice for this place is to bring a BIB! If you eat ribs like a true southerner and use both your hands, you'll need it for all the sauce and juiciness that pours out. :) My only complaint is that the ribs can be somewhat fatty. Other than that, its great and portions are huge.

Wow, by far the best BBQ I've ever had.I had to travel across the US for work, and decided to try the yelp recommended bbq places in North Carolina, Kanas City, Atlanta, and Memphis. Newberry Backyard beats them all with their juicy sweet ribs. Cole slaw, potato salad, and bean also delicious.

The best BBQ in Florida! The spare ribs are amazing. They have so much flavor. Normally I am not a fan of whole bbq chicken but they have the best tasting and juiciest chicken in the state. They used to do all u can eat ribs which was always fun. The banana pudding is a great way to finish off a great meal. If you like it spicy, ask for the Habanero Tabasco and their XXX hot BBQ sauce. You will love it!

It gets a third star only because of friendly service and the lack of competition in the area. Years ago, this restaurant was a destination. People would drive from Gainesville to get a taste of Rocky's BBQ. It has changed owners a couple times over the years and the food just isn't the same. The portions have gotten smaller. The BBQ itself is bland and tastes like it has been sitting around a while. Tonight I placed an order to go for my family. My son's order was wrong. The half slab of spare ribs I ordered was tiny (a couple of the ribs were the size of highlighters...seriously) and tough. I love good BBQ. Sadly, they don't serve that any more.

  • Brad K.

I would love to give them 3 stars. Service was 4 stars, so I guess they might deserve 3. But I really rating the food. We ordered the Feast for Two. Those who know Gainesville BBQ and good BBQ will understand. Their meat quality is more like Sonny's (which I call the McDonald's of BBQ) than Four Rivers or Adams. Ribs should be smoked and cooked until they are fall off the bone. Adams does it consistently (go the 13th street location all the time for lunch) so why can't Newberry. Thus 2 stars. Newberry BBQ is just plan average and a meh I've experienced better. Personally I have to give props to Adam's. They always have tender tender fall off the bone ribs, huge ribs, along with their pork and chicken. Newberry just doesn't stack up to the competition now in the area. Can't say we'll be back driving all the way out there from Gainesville when we have Adam's and Four Rivers locally.

Great food! Great Service! Sliced pork was tender and moist. The fries were crispy. You must try the banana pudding.
