I had heard a lot about this place and finally tried it. I went at 2:30pm and it had a line of about 10 min tops. Cheeseburger was great (only $2!). I forget that hamburger can have flavor instead of being a wad of dry chewy beef patty. I got mine fully loaded and it was delicious.. The fries were okay. They only take cash.

Like a Chain's fast food burger but not McDonalds, and a bit better. Greasy and Delicious.

If you want juicy mouth watering burgers, this is the place for you (they make their burgers with fresh ground meat daily)!! When you decide to go there, make sure you keep in mind that they are ridiculously busy during lunch (both in the walk up line and in the two drive through lanes) it is TOTALLY WORTH THE WAIT!!. Mac's Drive Thru is a must have if you live in Gainesville and if you work in the area, you will become addicted!!!

The lines are so long, but the burger is worth it. Mac's serves one of the best drive-thru burgers to be had in Gainesville. The shoestring fries are a perfect compliment to a double cheeseburger and a large cherry coke. Just don't be stupid and try to grab a quick lunch at 12:30 or you'll find yourself waiting for a good half hour.

Went here this afternoon for lunch. Ordered my standard cheeseburger all the way and an order of fries, and was not disappointed! The drive-up line here can sometimes get a bit out of control, streaming out into the street. If that is the case, park across the street in the Publix parking lot and walk across the street. The walk-up line is very often not all that bad.

Good, old fashioned hamburgers. Simple menu and inexpensive to boot. They have two drive in windows, but this place is so popular, you will wait quite awhile. Burgers are tasty, real cheese, fresh and cold lettuce, tomato, onion & pickles. Fried are hot and crispy, not too much salt. Definitely a must-grab when on this side of town around lunchtime.

Debated between 3 stars and two. My teen students highly recommended it, then a friend wanted to try it. After a 3rd visit due to a friend, I said no more. I could feel my arteries hardening w/ just the thought! Grease is a main ingredient w/ the burgers, & the fish sandwich is not made fresh...just a pre-packaged frozen square that I could cook at home under desperation. The fries are fresh, but rather bland. The menu is tiny, & no credit/debit cards are accepted. I like the idea of a local family owned business, but I like the taste of good, tasty (& less greasy) food better. Carry on w/o me, Mac's!

Only thing keeping them from five stars is that drive thru line...SLOW.

My office isn't far away, and I eat here more regularly than a cardiologist would advise; but it's that good! Don't be surprised to drive up and see the drive thru line backed up into the street. That's normal at lunch time. It's worth the wait. These aren't the gourmet burgers you can get at other places around town. If you are looking for those, try Sweet Mel's downtown. But what they are is an old-fashioned burger joint that will make you skip the chains whenever possible. Get the double cheeseburger all the way. Wash it down with a sweet tea. Then find a place to nap while the food coma sets in. While most of the old school approach is a home run, there is one throwback I could do without: they only take cash. Too many of us these days carry cards instead of cash. There have been many times I would have stopped by but went elsewhere when I realized I didn't have cash on me.

Mac's is the best drive-through burger in town. Nice people and great food. The food is off of the griddle and straight to you. The fries are amazing and the tea is brewed.

A classic cheeseburger and fries joint that, unlike the commercial chains, gets the order right and isn't a sloppy mess when you bring it home. They aren't gourmet burgers and it is just as the name states: a drive thru so no seats or fancy dining. The wait is longer near lunch time and they close kind of early. The price I paid for my cheeseburger and fries was 4.22. Good burger, good price is the bottom line.

A cash only only business WTF are they laundering drug money or structuring deposits to be under $10,000 to avoid paying taxes. It was very inconvenient to have to use the ATM at Publix in that neighborhood and dangerous.

I've lived in Gainesville for a little over a year-and-a-half now and I've been remiss in visiting and reviewing all the "local legend" establishments. Mac's has been on my to-do list for awhile, so today I took the opportunity to have lunch there. I didn't get the real "drive-thru" experience and I didn't miss that part. Even with two windows, cars were backed up into the street as of about 1pm ... but since I was bicycling, I ordered at the walk-up window. Only one couple ahead of me, and that was because they knew what they wanted and I had to look at the menu. Quick, polite, competent service -- cash only though, so don't show up with a debit card hoping to eat. I ordered the double cheeseburger (not "all the way", just the mayo and onion -- "all the way" would include, IIRC, lettuce, tomato and pickle as well), fries and a soft drink. Burger: Best burger I've had in quite awhile! Not huge -- for a double cheeseburger, I'd guess to total pre-cooked meat weight at maybe 1/3 pound -- but definitely a reasonably big burger for the price. Just exactly greasy enough to evoke that old-fashioned drive-thru nostalgia, and it comes in wax paper too! I'm in love. Fries: Meh. Not bad, not remarkable either. Soft drink: Styrofoam cup, some ice but not too much. They don't cheat you on it anyway. Price-wise, about what I would have paid for a combo meal of comparable size at one of the fast food chains. Quality-wise, head and shoulders above. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger, "I'll be back."

THE best drive-thru in Gainesville hands down. The best fast food burger and/or chicken sandwich. I never carry cash but I will go to the atm around the corner just to get this burger. My order is always right, my meal is always fresh, and my wallet is always thankful. It's a Gainesville staple and you have to go at least once.

I can't believe I've lived here my whole life & just tried them! Soooo good! Adults & kids were very happy & ate it all. I grew up on sandwich inn but this place beats them out hands down. Perfect old school burgers. Bring cash and expect a wait but its worth it!

  • Jessica S.

One of my favorite burger spots in Gainesville! It's not a fancy burger joint, so if you're expecting that, I wouldn't recommend it. But the price is good, and their burgers are good. I occasionally go when I am craving fast food - definitely better than going to a chain. Cash only, and this place is drive-thru only. Not open on weekends or late in the evening. The only negative comment is how long it may take to get your food. Expect to wait in a line of cars for at least 15-30 minutes on a typical day.

Not bad for fast food, rather support this local business than a large chain. Prices and item sizes were on par with some of the famous chains. Burgers are cooked well done. I always get a cheeseburger 'all the way' with added bacon and an order of fries. Fries are decent. Food is greasy, though. Every bag of food I've gotten the grease goes through the bottom of the bag. Service is very friendly. This place can be very busy, the line overflowing to the street from both directions, and the walk-up counter line which I feel goes slower than the drive thru. Overall, no frills fast food burger joint that I'll probably visit many a time when my money's dwindling. I may try the chicken sandwich next time. Wish they offered milkshakes!

For what it is, this place does it right! Locals. Drive thru could be faster (always a line out to the street), but who am I to tell them they could make more money...

It had been too many years since visiting Mac's and I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed going there. Cheeseburger, fries and an iced tea while sitting at one of the picnic tables is a nice bit of Florida nostalgia. Mac's still does it right. Two thumbs up for: local flavor, service, price.

I was finally in the area early and arrived here at 10:30am to wait in line for 20 minutes for two burgers and an order of fries. They have the same amount of customers as Sandwich Inn right around the corner, but they take a very long time to prepare the orders. However, they give you more meat on the burger at Mac's. So be ready to wait if you come here, even when there are no other customers. The burgers are tasty and on the small side, about as large as your fist. It is $0.39 extra per piece of bacon that you add to your order. They use salt liberally on the meat and the toppings are fresh. The fries are nothing fancy, reminding me of Wendy's fries. I enjoy the good amount of butter used on the bun when it is toasted. The menu has some sandwiches, one size of fries for $1.39, and an assortment of sodas. Nothing fancy. Cash only.

Well I finally made it to this Gainesville staple after a couple of years. This place is getting my coveted 5 star rating for a mix of awesomeness in the atmosphere and food areas. The top five yelp rating in no lie. This place is very basic. Cash only and you can either walk up and over or go through either of the drive through lanes. You can see the entire operation from the window. With that you can decide right away if you want to eat there. The employees are awesome and know almost all of their customers. Now for the food. This place has rock solid burgers on the cheap. I recommend getting your burger all the way for the full effect. The fries are basic but taste pretty good. If you have never been you have to stop by at lease once.

I'm not sure I can say anything about Mac's that other people have not said about this great place. They have a limited menu of really good burgers, chicken sandwhiches and fries, all of hich are served fresh and hot. On top of all the goodness, it is cheap! Lines can be long, but they do open at 10 a.m. and the lines are not long if you avoid the main lunch hours. Cash only and they are not open on the weekends

  • Adriann J.

I like Mac's burgers. The wax paper wrapped burgers, the demand for them obviously because of the long lines etc. But honestly to me they taste like just a home made burger. Nothing too special about them. Their fish and cheese and ham and cheese sandwiches are good. I'm just like meh. Don't get me wrong, I'll continue to eat there but I won't go out of my way, drive across town or anything. Never craved a Mac Burger. That's how I know if I really, really like a place. If i crave it...then you got me!

Old fashioned (and kinda sketchy-looking) drive thru located in North Gainesvile. Mac's Drive Thru is a pretty decent place. It's tucked away on it's own little street and looks like a rundown drug dealing spot at night. But during the day, this place is bustling. They churn out some decent eats here, but the way it's done kinda blows. You drive into their yard and get in a line of cars to await placing an order. Warning: If you are pressed for time, or have to use the bathroom, AVOID this place. You will be waiting for a while and if you don't like it, there's no way out. Pretty much forces you to order their food. Which isn't a bad thing. Mac's serves up some pretty good burgers. Don't get me wrong. They're not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination. No way. They're greasy, messy, mounds of goodness. And they're dirt cheap. The chicken sandwiches here are decent, but you should really only come for the burger. The meat is tasty and worth getting a couple of them. Can't really remember the fries, so I won't comment, but I'm sure they were cheap as hell too. This place is a whole lot like Sandwich Inn, but I did like Sandwich Inn better. (Though these guys are kinda nicer). In any case, definitely worth coming to try it out. Unless you're on a diet....then stay the hell away.

My favorite guilty pleasure in town! Gainesville has a lot of great choices for burgers, but there is nothing like Mac's!! My only real complaint is that too many other people know and love it! I hate having to block traffic on 10th ave waiting to order. But I promise you, if you don't mind the extra calories, it is SOOO worth it!

The 5 star ratings on this place simply baffle me. I've gone there on occasion for about 15 years, simply because it's near work and I get tired of the same ol' stuff that you're limited to when you're office is in NE Gainesville. And by "gone there", I mean I'll say occasionally say sure if a coworker is already going there and asks me if I want anything. 5 stars based on price. Yeah, it's cheap. The quality is lacking, especially for an "old fashioned burger joint". The fries, imo, are not very good at all. The burgers are small and lack flavor, other than flat out grease. And there's the 37 minute wait during lunch time (also a reason for letting the coworker go). I say this as a completely biased and 3rd generation lover of the now closed Louis Lunch. No one in Gainesville can come even remotely close to the awesomeness of Louis for the old fashioned joint that I frequented for most of my life. Next in-line is Sandwich Inn. Mac's is a distant 3rd for old places in tiny buildings in not-so-great areas.

OH SHIT. You like cheeseburger and fries and don't like to spend a lot of money??? This is it. All the food is cheap and good. It's one of those places you have to eat at once a week just to satisfy the "Macs Craving". I know they have other things on the menue, but I've never seen anyone order anything else other than burger/fries. Sidenote: I believe they get their ingredients straight from publix across the street. Who doesn't love publix.

Good grub! Go for the roast beef sammich or the hamburger and fries. Be careful going at lunch time because it could be a wait. They have a walk up window, but not much in the way of sitting down to eat. It's always been a grab 'n go type of place-- it's a drive thru.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place!!! I never knew what kind of burger-tastic gem was hidden in Gainesville when I actually WENT to UF. If I had known, then this is most definitely where I would've gained my Freshman 15. Maybe even my Freshman 20. Yes... it's THAT good. Tender, meaty & juicy burgers cooked fresh, so you might have to wait a few for the goodness. Awesome skinny french fries seasoned with a healthy dusting of salt. Chicken sandwiches to die for. Lines can be long... but that's a good thing. An indicator of good food & passionate burger fans. Cash only. SOOOO glad that now, as a resident of the 352, I have discovered this little bit of burger heaven & can sing their praises on Yelp. Pure Awesomeness. Cheap. Local. Fresh.... Love it.

"No one goes there any more; it's too crowded." - Yogi Berra ***.5 Stars (Rounded up) Every time I think of coming here, after seeing the lines, I inevitably keep on driving. Today...should have been one of those days. Don't get me wrong, the burgers are solid (of the "Smash & Scrape" variety, shredded lettuce, "Inverted Veggie Configuration" (where the lettuce, tomatoes, et al are on the bottom), non-griddled/toasted plain white bun); but at least to me, simply not worth it. I won't count them out completely though; during times when no one is there it is certainly a respectable option. Now that there's a bit more competition in town for a quality "Smash & Scrape" burger this place doesn't quite hold the allure

Great burgers, but roast beef sandwich was a little off. Not a physically appealing area at all but it's tasty, convenient, and cheap.

Thank you Yelp. I have been living here for about a week and was craving a good burger... this place was amazing!! I actually got my girlfriend to go get the food for us, but she confirmed what everyone else said about the long line, but it's worth the wait!!! I got a double cheeseburger which was amazing and she got a chicken sandwich which she ate in about 2 minutes! Yum yum

This place is simply the very best at what it is: Drive thru burgers, 50s style. The prices are low, the burgers come wrapped in a wax paper envelope, and the taste is fantastic. Expect to wait. There is a double drive thru and there is seemingly a line from dusk to dawn. Deal with it. Its not fast food, its great drive thru. If you don't want to wait in your car, park across the street and walk over - your visit will be shortened by a few minutes - but still, don't expect speed. I've been eating there for 4 years and the double cheeseburger is the only thing on the menu I have ever ordered. It is perfect, its less than 3 bucks, and it is best after it has cooled just a bit on the drive home. Even the fries are good, and I almost never order fries anywhere anymore. Plus, this is a place where you will see elected officials standing next to day laborers waiting for a burger. Oh, and they are only open M-F, so don't crave one on the weekends.

THE BEST burgers & fries in Gainesville--PERIOD! It's located next to Tutoring Zone (the best tutoring in Gainesville) and absolutely a "must eat here" stop. Also, the people that work there are great; they have awesome personalities, and are fun to talk with--don't let the slightly sketchy appearance of the little building scare you off! Just talking about this place makes me hungry! I'm headed there shortly.

A long time local favorite! Great family, great staff - Mac's is MUST everytime we come back home! Me & my family are regulars - they have the best burgers, fries and sweet tea of any place around!

Old-school, no frills, phenomenal burgers and fires. Fast, solid service. It's nice to see a place that does things right in this town. Bravo!

  • April O.

Biggest negative is that it's slow ... unfortunately, during the summer when you're sitting in a hot car in a hot parking lot in the hot sun developing totally unsexy pit (and tummy and back) stains on your expensive silk shirt, you'll probably agree that it's a pretty big negative. You're better off parking in the plaza across and taking a hike across the street than waiting in the drive-thru, which is oftentimes backed up into 10th Avenue. If you're wondering "Is this burger worth a potential car wreck?" the correct answer is maybe. Depends on your deductible. The burger itself is excellent and stupidly cheap. Cash only. Go figure!

  • Sara B.

I love this place. Super cheap and super good. The burgers are a little small, but that just makes eating 2 or 3 of them more fun. It's always a long line, but I deal with it because I love their food. The perfect dive-drive-thru meal that isn't a nasty chain fast food joint.

I have not lived in Gainesville for many years now, but when I do return, the one thing I absolutely must do is go to Mac's. I used to live 3 blocks from it, and now I live 1,016 miles from it. At this very moment I am considering jumping in my car and driving 17 hours to get a roast beef sandwich. And some Publix fried chicken. And a Publix sub. And a hair extension from the weird beauty supply place that's probably not there anymore. I miss you, Gainesville. But mostly I miss Mac's, and their wacky little wax-paper wrappy sandwiches.

This place has decent burgers, about equal with five guys. However their fries are not all that great. I would probably go back, but I wouldn't make a special trip. Its Gainesville good, in another words don't have high expectations and you'll probably enjoy it more.
