One word: YUM. We had food from Evelyn's at a recent event and it was fantastic. The fried fish was on point, the mac and cheese was buttery and rich, the sweet potatoes were like candy, and the black eyed peas were perfect. It was a comforting and delicious meal that everyone raved about. I can't wait to go here and get the fried fish again!

Had amazing fried catfish, yams and collard greens. The fried chicken sandwich was good but the chicken had bones in it. I was not personally able to try the mac&cheese due to my lactose intolerance but all my friends who had it really enjoyed it. Cute little run place that is definitely frequented by locals. Even so, we were treated very kindly and had very efficient service regardless of their rush hour (brunch time on a Sunday). Their coffee was also pretty amazing. Give this place a try if you can! Take-out is just as awesome! P.S. That lot adjacent to them is not their personal lot for parking and you risk getting towed by parking there. Play it safe and street park!

This is one of those places I kinda want to keep to myself but I also want to support them soooo here we go. The restaurant is bright blue and sits on the corner of King. The ambiance is very "homey" and I get the sense that it is a family run operation. It carries the feel that someones mother or grandmother is cooking your meal. First off, I love soul food and fried fish so Evelyn's and I were borderline destined for each other. They offer Catfish, Whiting, Tilapia, and I believe trout all between bread. I have ordered the Catfish which is BOMB and the Whiting since I have been eating here. It is hard to stray away from the Catfish!! On a side note, I am not even sure where you can get a catfish sandwich in DE so that right there is worthy of a couple of stars in my book. To me, fried fish often comes down to the breading and their's is perfect! It is a light breading and seasoned, I believe, with only salt and pepper. It is served plain between two slices of white bread and come with chips. There is hot sauce ready to roll on the table and I order a side of tarter...cricket,cricket. The bread is so fresh and soft that it fuses with the hot fish. True soul food!! The drinks are canned and set up for self serve. They have an iced tea I think called c's which is real good. I go during the 12:30-1pm mark and it is pretty quiet. The staff has always been very pleasant. My only problem is that they have a window to place orders but if you dine-in a waitress serves you. I never know if I should wait for her to pay or pay at the counter - they probably think I am a freak haha. Either way you fry it up this place is legit!! Enjoy! Kent

The catfish was fresh, but It was just sandwiched in between two slices of white bread. Bread. Fried catfish. Bread. Nothing else. I expected more. And the mac and cheese was a bit too greasy for my liking

Just went to this place for breakfast with my parents. Delicious eggs, bacon, and hot cakes. Best breakfast deal in town! Real home cooking. Loved it! Highly recommend!

It took me less than 15 minutes to make my way to Evelyn's Soul Food Restaurant after a neighbor, who happened to pass me by outside mentioned the new soul food restaurant about 100 yards from where I've been staying in Wilmington; judging from my first visit, I'm going to be back again, and again. Tucked into the corner of Market and King streets in a little blue house, across from the rushing river waters of Brandywine Park sits the area's newest headquarters for down home, soul and southern cooking. The dining room has been redecorated from the old seafood restaurant it used to house with high-backed pub style booths, a wall table obviously meant to handle a busy lunchtime crowd and televisions tucked into each corner. It's homey and cozy, clean and welcoming and the ladies behind the counter will smile and laugh with you if you're one to oblige and return the favor. Being a redneck southern boy, I had no choice; it was absolute law that I HAD to order the fried catfish with carb-loaded candied yams and potato salad. Excellent! The fish was fried perfectly, a large fluffy white fillet. The seasoning in the food is a bit miniscule but I'm guessing the cooks prefer to er on the side of not enough, allowing the diner to add his/her own seasoning. Plus, this is Delaware, not the Mississippi Delta so I give the lack of seasoning a pass. Make no mistake, this is GOOD FOOD, and I say that as a Mississippi boy born and bred near the Delta's catfish capital and the heart of Cajun country. Evelyn's is open weekdays from 7am through 6:30pm, opening at 8am on Saturdays and Sundays. The menu is limited but that makes it even better; Several types of fish are offered, breakfast sandwiches, sides like collards and yams & homemade mac & cheese. There IS a little room for improvement on the price however. A plate of catfish with the two sides, soda and a square of pineapple cake was a little over $15. Hopefully Evelyn's will modify those prices but if not, it's still worth a visit, even if not so often. I'm also hoping they'll eventually offer gumbos and etouffe'. No doubt they will as the business continues to grow; and at the rate they're going, Evelyn's is gonna be huge. Good for the soul and the belly too! C'est bon!!!

I ordered for me and a few friends. It took quite awhile for our food to arrive but I guess that's because the had to cook the meat for each person. It wouldn't have bothered me as much if the food hadn't been sooooo salty. Why so much salt? I'm not trying to die from high blood pressure. Even the potato salad was salty. I never know anyone to add salt to potato salad but obviously they did. I will try this joint again after I think they have read this review. But if they don't fix the TOO MUCH SALT issue I'll just have to go else where, or cook my own meals. Platters are 11.00. That's a lot of money for me to have given it to the dogs. My whole party struggled to eat their food. Pulling off the skin of the meat due to much salt and making faces with each bite of potato salad and Mac n cheese. I hope they just made an oops I accidentally poured too much salt mistake. But if this wasn't a mistake then the people who eat there daily.... They are putting themselves at risk. I bet their doctors are happy from getting paid when they gotta run their for high blood pressure Meds. Over all the staff were pretty nice but all that salt just ruined everything. A waste of money but dogs were happy to eat most of our food. The stars are for the staffs friendliness and 0 stars for the salty food.

We finally checked out Evelyn's Soul Food yesterday. All of these great reviews had us really looking forward to the food. Our mouths were watering and ready. Our order: Catfish Dinner with mac & cheese and collard greens; Fried Whiting Dinner with black-eyed peas and rice and potato salad; meatloaf sandwich with gravy; baked chicken sandwich with gravy; side of yams; cornbread; coconut cake; lemon cake; and sweet potato pie The catfish and fried whiting were DELISH -- especially the catfish! Both fish were perfectly seasoned -- I'm sure it's a mix they purchase because it's too spot-on compared to poor seasoning of their other items. The mac & cheese was standard and good. The collard greens...eh, not so much. They really left something to be desired and were disappointing because the seasoning was off. The black-eyed peas really needed some salt, onion, and a touch of garlic -- quite bland! The potato salad had a good flavor, but the potatoes were a little undercooked -- a little too much crunch. The meatloaf and gravy was really good -- nice and homey like grandma used to make. The baked chicken had a really nice flavor, but was a bit on the dry side. Oh, and they forgot our gravy, which would've helped with the dryness issue. The yams were good -- you could taste the butter (hot damn!), but they tasted as though they had a bit too much orange juice in them. Unfortunately, I ran out of freakin' hot sauce as I tried to provide the greens and black-eyed peas some help. Thankfully, I had enough for my fish. (HAHA) Oh, and the cornbread was just OK. It definitely didn't taste like a boxed mix, but it was just average. Repeat after me: "Cooking food requires the use of seasoning. Salt, pepper, garlic, and onion (fresh, granulated, flakes, powder -- SOMETHING!) usually belong in most dishes, especially soul food. And sometimes a bit of hot sauce." On to desserts. The coconut cake -- whomever made that needs to be kissed, caressed...just loved. It was BANGIN'! The lemon cake was quite good, too, and that person deserves a pat on the back. And the sweet potato pie...well...let's just say someone needs to be slapped. It was a disappointment and not very good at all. Their pricing is a little off when you look at the amount of food you get. 1 filet of catfish with 2 sides definitely isn't worth $11. $6 for a piece of baked chicken and 2 slices of white bread is is overpriced, too -- especially since they're inexpensive leg quarters. Same goes for the meatloaf. Oh, and where the hell is the fried chicken? WINGS?! NOT! What soul food joint doesn't have FRIED CHICKEN?! Sheesh! All in all, I give them a B-. We'll definitely be back for the meatloaf, catfish, whiting, and mac & cheese, but the other things need a bit of work. Once they learn how to use basic seasonings in their sides, my grade will definitely rise.

Is it to soon for round two? *SIGH* Well I got two catfish dinners. One fillet is never enough for me. They were out of greens and cornbread at two pm on a mon so I guess prep work wasn't done since she kindly stated they sold out the day before. So I got cabbage and string beans. Both were decent. I would get the cabbage again. Both needed salt and pepper and no plate of soul food is good without hot sauce. The green beans were obviously canned and made with the can juices and what looked like turkey. No biggie I just make waaaay better green beans canned and fresh. Anxious to try the collard greens though. The catfish was AMAZEBALLS!!! It was a nice pieces seasoned perfectly which to me screams Tony Chachere's or something similar based off the other seasonings. Whatever it is was it was damn good! The fish was cleaned and not grainy at all no dirt or fishy taste like some places. My daugher had a hot dog, ugh seven year olds! She said it was fine. She also had the fried apples which she enjoyed and there were plenty of them. We also grabbed a few sodas and juices and some cake. I am not a coconut person so I went for the pound cake. It had good lemon flavor with chocolate icing. Didn't like that I kept tasting coconut though. For the chocolate cake not sure how it tasted because they never put it in our bags. Was slightly disappointed as was my daughter. Will go again maybe tonight hmmm lol they close in two hours and 37 mins... maybe no I am stuffed. It was damn good though! Just remember s&p hot sauce and baggage check! There is plenty of seating inside but take it home it was still pipping hot when we took our ten min ride home. Fyi parking is in front on the street and is metered. Bring change each quarter was 15 mins.

Ok so I am a true foody or fatty lol. The food was ok. The mac and cheese was really good. Service could of been much better. They brought my friends food out first and then i had to wait 6 minutes before they brought mines out. So now im angry cause she is eating her food in front of me while my stomach is growling! Then we asked does it come with cornbread and they said that would be extra. But she said our meals come with bread......And yet they brought no bread out with our meals. I would not go back but the food was not bad.

Who likes soul food? This guy. I grew up on it in Virginia and DC. First of all, I went on a Saturday. They don't post hours and the hours on Yelp aren't correct. So I called ahead to confirm. The food here was very good. I had the yams, collards and fried whiting dinner, with a side of white bread. The fish was very good (see pics), collards very good and yams pretty good (maybe a bit too goopy sweet for me) and mac and cheese was pretty good, not quite the way I like it (extra gooey) but certainly not bad. I did have the problems where they didn't have everything on the menu I wanted (coleslaw and especially sadly the fried shrimp appetizer). Also, what soul food place doesn't make their own sweet ice tea?? Sacrilege. I guess I'm just too far North of the Mason Dixon line. The service was nice and it was clean inside.

went there this past weekend. We ordered 4 meals which was supposed to be 7. The guy behind the counter messed up our order. They ran out of pork chops which was yummy. We wanted 3 ordered but was only able to get 2. We also wanted 2 orders of the quarter chicken which we didnt get. the fried chicken wings was good. The sides was ok. Cabbage was bland, collards was ok, maci and cheese was good, yams was good, rice and gravy good. We ordered potato salad with the quarter chicken legs and as you read above we didnt receive. It would have taking too long to wait for them to prepare the quarter legs.

So comfy! Great background music, very warm vibe. Pancakes looked awesome! Mac and cheese was salty but delicious. Whiting filets had some bones but very good. Collards need some vinegar. Smothered pork chop was AWESOME!!! Both sweet tea and lemonade were VERY sweet. Overall, great local place. Don't miss it!!

Evelyn and her staff's service was exceptional...however the food certainly was not. The baked chicken was undercooked, the yams were too sweet and the mac and cheese was very bland. I left this place very disappointed.
