We are from Phoenix, and are pretty familiar with good Mexican food. They served us 15 minutes before closing on a Saturday night. We ordered machaca chimi and it was THE BEST. What a gem in the heart of Telluride. I'm feeling pretty fortunate we found such a great restaurant! Thank you, Esperanza. We will be back tomorrow.

Great downstairs spot to chill out and get away from the hustle and bustle of a busy day in town. The service is always friendly and the portions are huge and tasty. Try a house margarita and the steak fajitas.

Excellent margaritas, Negro Modelo is cold, the chicken taquitos are light and very tasty plus great service. What more could you ask for :)

Wow, is be here all the time if I was a local! The salsas are the best I've ever had. Roasted smokey delicious flavor. Guacamole is simple and perfect. When I got my enchiladas I thought I'd never finish ... Hah! Rice beans everything gone. Really fantastic .

Very disappointing. Beef fajitas were cut with the grain and impossible to eat. Tough and chewy. Queso is cheez whiz out of a can. Chips are hard. Salsa had too much basil and oregano so much it tasted like an Italian marinara. Server asked why my husband didn't eat the fajitas, he explained, she offered a differ plate, we declined, but they still charged us. It's a definite pass...

I was on my way to a Mexican restaurant that was recommended based off a website. We missed and asked a local who we thought hated us with a New York charm. Eric, the sweetest guy in telluride, told us to check out Esperanza! We sit down at the bar, celebs to the left, celebs to right, the bar tender was on point. We order food, everything from the fresh chips to the carne asada was amazing! If there is one place to go to in telluride, Esperanza is the place! CTU

Esperanza makes everything from scratch! The best Mexican food this side of L.A. The chile relleno is amazing, and the chicken mole is the best mole on the planet! Not to mention the mAde from scratch guacamole. Highly recommend from a local telluridian, by way of Southern California.

Gloomy atmosphere, which could be overcome by service and food. Sadly, not so. Just asking about an entree resulted in it being delivered. The cheese dip was Cheez Whiz, and was served cool, sent back. Kitchen was out of white cheese dip. Fahitas were chewy. All in all, perhaps it's not a good idea to seek Mexican food in Telluride.

Lots of good reviews, but I would say this place comes out fair at best. The fajitas lack flavor and the portion size is very small. The guacamole was brown on arrival. Rice was over cooked. The tortilla soup was decent, but not great. Beware if a large party shows up or is on premesis as they have trouble with staffing and wait times for food can run an hour.

This place is a quaint, humble, and truly authentic Mexican restaurant. In fact, when making reservations, the person answered in spanish! We walked right in and were seated immediately. On the table were complimentary tortilla chips, salsa, and fresh cabbage salsa. The chips were still warm because they were freshly made, and the cabbage salsa salad thing was incredibly light and flavorful. Our waitress was an energetic and awesome young lady who helped us navigate around the menu. She kept checking up on us, filling our glasses, and made sure that everything was satisfactory. The food came in good sized portions, and was truly authentic. I have been to Mexico before several times and I could definitely relate to this food to the food I have there. The enchiladas were particularly fantastic, and the chipotle sauce they make is killer! Dessert was simple and enjoyable as well. Totally glad that we stumbled upon this new gem in Telluride, and when we return we will definitely revisit.

I love Esperanza's! Best margs in town, and great happy hour too. Very cool 'Esperanza rated' tequila menu for the tasting connoisseur. The food is delicious, I love the veggie fajitas and of course the chips and salsa and cabbage dip are the best. Reasonable prices especially considering the amount of food you get. And if you're lucky enough to have Esperanza herself wait on you you're in for a treat.

Its been many years since Telluride had a really good Mexican restaurant but if the meal I had last night is any indication this place fills that gap. My Mexican food yardstick is a chili relleno. If they can do that right everything is usually decent. They do a good one here - actually two since they make one regular and one crispy. Their regular is a good size poblano chili, firm texture not overcooked and not so heavily battered as to be unrecognizable. Tasty. Margaritas come in a pint glass and are plentiful and delicious. In addition to the standard salsa with your chips they serve a spicy Mexican slaw that's pretty tasty too. So if you're in town and hungry for some good Mexican food after a long day on the slopes, you won't be disappointed here.

What a nice hidden place. Anyone visiting Telluride who wants a spectacular Mexican meal that is unpretentious with welcoming friendly staff, look no further. I recommend it with no reservations. Why 4 stars? Late on making salsa and ran out of flan desert right when they opened for dinner; losing a star was a technical point. Go there!

Pretty solid mexican food, especially for what we found in Telluride. It also seems to be a place where the locals hang out, so you can bet on consistency. If I could, I'd give them 3.5 stars, but I don't think they quite get there for the fourth star. It was a little hard to find at first. They have a shingle hanging out on the street, but you have to go downstairs to get into the restaurant. The staff was very nice and our order came out quickly. The food was hot and the beer was cold, so there is not much to complain about. Before dinner, they brought out two kinds of salsa with the chips, a traditional tomato-based "pace picante" style salsa and another that looked homemade with chopped up onions, cilantro, peppers, etc. Both were pretty fantastic. For our main course, my wife had the camarones diablas and I had the enchilada poblano. The food was very good, though not exceptional, and the portions are enormous. The staff never rushed us, even though we ended up being the last people in the place except for the two guys who were clearly regulars that were alternating between drinking at the bar, joking with the waitress, and helping clean up and stack chairs.

Great food! The salsas were amazing! I had the fish tacos that were to die for and my husband had a burrito which he loved. I will probably always go here when I am in Telluride.

Absolutely freaking amazine mole! We came in kind of later (8ish) on a weeknight and the place was dead. The service was excellent though. We were starving after a long day of skiing, so it was great that our food arrived quickly. My friend said his margarita was awesome, and we both practically jumped face first into the fried ice cream for dessert. Give it a try!

Esperanza's is incredible. The food is outstanding, some of the best Mexican i've ever had. She literally does make the best margarita's too. Fresh squeezed lime and high quality tequila. If you come - you MUST get dessert... deep fried ice cream, flan or Churros. All incredibly delicious and an inexpensive end to a great meal. By the way -- even with four choices of meat, it is VEGETARIAN friendly. The homemade salsa's that come with every meal are really good and you don't have to wait long for them, so if your hungry its a great spot to go. The food doesn't take long to come out and once it does it's almost overwhelming how big the plates are!! Definitely a take home for lunch the next day type of dinner. The service is good -- the staff have always been very friendly... if Esperanza is in the kitchen she will come out to meet you if you ask -- she loves to hear how your meal was. Tourists and locals alike will love this place. Some of my favorite meals: Spinach Quesadillas, Chicken Mole Burritos, Deep Fried Ice Cream, Chicken Tortilla Soup and the Guacamole.

For the second time in a week we enjoyed dinner at Esperanza. First of all, Esperanza is a real person, a fabulous woman who is the owner chef who makes certain the food is delicious and the service timely and friendly. The Margaritas are a great start along with the tasty slaw, warm chips and hot sauce. The guacamole is fresh and well prepared. I always order a combo with a taco and enchilada, all delicious. My husband loves the Carne Asada. This is a great place to take the whole family.

We came here because we'd never eaten at Esperanza's before and I had a hankering for Mexican/texmex. The service was fantastic- I'm pretty sure they were trying to close as we sat down but they were still attentive and friendly. Our food and drinks were fantastic- next time you're in telluride and think you're in the mood for Mexican, go here!!!

For Mexican food in the middle of a Colorado ski town it is good. But if you are from New Mexico or Arizona then chances are you may find certain things lacking. We enjoyed the tacos and enchiladas Poblanas, but the chips and the rellenos were tough. Service was excellent and they had a pico type salsa that had cabbage which we found to be quite tasty. It was good to get a Mexican fix and the price was right for Telluride. Plus one star for that.

Don't let the atmosphere scare you off! My husband and I were in Telluride on the same day as the Imogene Pass Run, so the town was insane and we couldn't find anywhere to eat that didn't have a 60 minutes wait. We walked into Esperanza's and were initially really concerned, as the restaurant was underground and there wasn't a soul in the place. But we are so glad we stayed! First off, you get 2 different and very delicious salsas to start. We also each ordered a margarita, and those didn't disappoint either. Each of our main meals were delicious (my guacamole even had real chucks of avocado in it!). The meat wasn't over cooked and was seasoned well. If I could give this a 4.5, I would. So tasty!

Great Mexican food, great margaritas, great people. Solid five stars. It is in the basement, but has a warm feel to it. the waitstaff, especially Esperanza, are always super nice and friendly. I'm not a big margarita drinker, but I always get one here. Bean and cheese burrito is hard to beat.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
